City wages top $120 million

ity of Richmond employees saw a collective pay raise in 2015, as its 2,059 employees earned $120.5 million in combined salaries, benefits and lump sum payouts, according to its annual financial statements.

In 2014, the city’s 1,998 employees earned $109.2 million.

In contrast, Burnaby paid employees $153 million, while Surrey paid staff $162 million.

Meanwhile, Vancouver paid $473 million.

Richmond now has 719 employees earning more than $75,000. Last year, 620 employees earned at least that much.

Richmond’s top municipal earner in 2015 was chief administrative officer George Duncan, who was paid $301,575 in base salary plus $29,676 in benefits. Vancouver’s manager in 2015, Penny Ballem, earned $343,767.

Burnaby’s city manager earned $269,853, while Surrey’s boss, Vincent Lalonde, earned

$335,551, according to reports.

Richmond’s councillors all took in a base salary of $58,073 in 2015. Most councillors took in about $6,000 in benefits, while Coun.

Harold Steves received $16,942. Mayor Malcolm Brodie earned $127,728 in salary plus $21,774 in benefits for his duties with the city. Gently does it, says RCC

R

ob Howard, president of the Richmond Community Coalition (RCC), says the City of Richmond ought to look at “gentle density” within neighbourhoods, meaning more single-family home lots being subdivided to provide for new, smaller detached homes.

“We’re suggesting in some neighbourhoods, gentle density might actually solve the problem” of housing unaffordability, said Howard, a former BC Liberal MLA for Richmond Centre and past city councillor.

When asked, Howard stopped short of suggesting Richmond neighbourhoods should include townhouses. He said maintaining existing character is important, however the city needs to examine ways to incentivize more affordable housing.

“In some instances, if the city were to offer the owner the ability to put three units of housing on a lot — it’s an up-zone — as a

result of this up-zoning, the city gets more control of form and character. And in that neighbourhood you then get a value of housing that’s more in line with the rest of the neighbourhood,” said Howard, acknowledging even the smaller homes may still be unaffordable.

“At least it’s a step in the right direction.”

Howard’s expertise in rezoning stems from his career in real estate finance and development. Via his company, New Coast Lifestyles, he is building a high-end seniors home/condo development in east Richmond and planning a second in City Centre.

He noted the RCC has consulted with real estate professionals, academics and planners in drafting a policy for housing affordability.

The benchmark price of a single-family home now sits at $1.72 million.

The panel also found that Malone breached the order by conducting investor relations activities on behalf of Lion King when he solicited a B.C. resident to purchase securities in Lion King.

The investor testified that Malone introduced him to the investment opportunity and even showed him samples of sand containing iron ore taken from the property. In July 2010, the investor purchased 33,333 shares of Lion King for $5,000.

Sanctions have not yet been made in the case. Hearings have been scheduled for later this year to determine the penalties Malone will face as a result of last week’s findings.

Richmond man who was subject to restrictions by the British Columbia Securities Commission (BCSC) has been found to have breached a ban by acting as a de factor director of an exploration company.

William Raymond Malone — who, as part of an earlier settlement with the BCSC, had to complete a course of study concerning the duties and responsibilities of directors and officers — breached an order prohibiting him from acting as a director or officer of any issuer and engaging in investor relations activities.

During the time period when the order was in effect, a BCSC panel found that Malone breached the order by acting as a de facto director and/or officer of Lion King Resources Inc., a private B.C. company that was in the business of promoting and developing an iron ore property in the Atacama region of Chile.

In its decision, the panel stated, “the evidence overwhelmingly supports the conclusion that Malone was acting as a de facto director or officer of Lion King during the relevant time.”

“When they (police) don’t fill that communications gap, when they are not honest and up front about the progress of an investigation, it tends to spark peoples’ suspicions and it leads to that kind of mistrust which is really something police departments want to avoid.”

If it’s a resources question, that’s something that needs to be addressed on a governmental level, King said, adding it then becomes a matter of whether or not police agencies are being adequately funded.

Looming over this is the time restriction some cases have in terms of laying charges.

So, where does a family go from here?

If Richmond had a municipal force, an individual could go to the province’s Office of the Police Complaint Commissioner (opcc.bc.ca). However, complaints involving the RCMP, need to be lodged with the Civilian Review and Complaints Commission for the RCMP (cpc-cpp. gc.ca) in Ottawa, but King notes, “This is not typically the kind of case they would jump in on.”

King added it is worth noting that the RCMP initially said the decision for charges to be laid would take up to six months.

“It’s now taken two years. So, there’s certainly a huge question there of what happened and what caused their initial assessment of six months to be significantly longer than it was.”

Bridge over troubled finances?: Mayor Graeme Wood

H

ow will the George Massey Tunnel replacement bridge pay for itself if it costs more to construct yet sees less traffic than the new Port Mann Bridge, which now has an accumulated surplus debt of $397 million since it opened?

“This is one of the big questions that has lingered on for the replacement of the Massey Tunnel. Specifically, what is the financing for the bridge?” asked Mayor Malcolm Brodie, who has repeatedly asked the Ministry of Transportation to reconsider the bridge project.

As a mayor who helped draft Metro Vancouver’s regional transportation strategy, Brodie has been highly critical of the bridge plan, which is now undergoing an environmental review by the provincial government.

Brodie maintains he has not been told how the Massey crossing will be tolled and the impact it will have on other crossings into

Richmond.

This month, the provincial government’s Transportation Investment Corporation released new traffic data showing the Port Mann saw an increase in traffic early in 2016.

Toll revenue increased $14 million to $132 million, but the bridge still lost $82.5 million for the fiscal year of 2015/2016. TI Corp maintains it will be able to fully pay for the $3.3 billion bridge by 2050, as expected. It’s allowed to run a deficit of $3.9 billion.

Regional transportation critic and Langley city councillor Nathan Pachel said the spike in traffic volume is likely due to the de facto closure of the Patullo Bridge for repairs.

Average weekday traffic for the Port Mann last year was about 110,000 vehicles. Analogous data for the Massey tunnel shows 84,000 vehicles, during 2014. Over 10 years, traffic at the tunnel has declined 0.7 per cent.

The new bridge is expected to cost $3.5 billion.

“Ten lanes is a huge bridge anywhere in the world, and now we’re adding a second 10-lane bridge over the Fraser . . . Is this the best case of spending tax money?” asked Bateman, who wants the Ministry of Transportation to experiment with tolls, such as peak tolling.

Brodie said the province could look at ways to reduce truck traffic through the existing tunnel, which he wants to keep and expand, with seismic upgrades.

“I question the need for a bridge,” said Brodie, who believes the bridge is being built, in part, to clear the path for deeper dredging

“I question that. I believe it’s a matter of time before there is further dredging in

the river. The port is inquiring about maximum sizes and weights (of boats) that can ply the waters. I believe it’s a major factor,” said Brodie.

In addition to environmental concerns, Brodie

believes the bridge will shuffle traffic jams to the Oak Street Bridge. Richmond’s transportation planners have questioned the Ministry’s traffic analysis that depended on Bluetooth data from cars.

Thank you for taking the time to voice your concerns. We, too, are disappointed to have had to implement reduced hours at the branches. Your feedback helps us to appreciate the importance of the library to you and your family.

The Library Board is entrusted by city council to prepare the annual budget. Unfortunately, due to rising expenditures and falling revenues, the library’s budget for 2016 required the board to make the difficult choice to reduce our hours of operation at the Cambie, Ironwood and Steveston branches, which we did in February.

In order to fully understand the impact of the change in hours to the community, the library conducted a member feedback survey in April.

There were many comments and concerns raised about the changes to Friday hours and the majority of those concerns were regarding the loss of morning

Based on public feedback from the survey, the board was able to make an adjustment to branch hours so that, as of July 29, they are now open at 10 a.m. on Fridays. While this change impacts library members who visit the branches on Friday evenings, it does address the majority of the concerns received in the survey.

We understand and regret that this change to the reduced Friday hours presents a personal barrier for you and your family to visit your favourite branch, but we are hopeful that you will visit the Brighouse library, as it remains open until 9:30 p.m. on Fridays.

We agree with you that Richmond Public Library plays a very important role in helping to raise the next generation of readers and provides important services to many in our community.

We appreciate that you took the time to write and your concerns will be considered as the 2017 library budget is prepared.

’ve been disappointed with the action (or lack thereof) from the provincial government on the housing crisis.

This crisis is depleting our current and future base of taxpayers, who are leaving Metro Vancouver fast. Our young people are the first generation that cannot afford to live in the city they grew up in.

Our beloved city of Richmond has been one of the first and hardest hit.

The average value for a single-family dwelling in Richmond? $1.7 million.

What are the results of the crisis so far?

Vanishing neighbourhoods, closing schools and an emptying sense of community.

So, what’s happened? It took Premier Christy Clark and Finance Minister Mike de Jong more than a year to flip-flop on real action to tackle the housing crisis.

Caving to pressure from the Official Opposition and the public, they recently announced a 15 per cent tax on foreign nationals buying real estate here.

Yet, loopholes in the legislation have already been found and there are numerous complications it causes in the marketplace.

Of course, they rushed so quickly that they forgot to wait for their taxpayer-funded study on the effects of foreign ownership on affordable housing in Metro Vancouver.

The provincial government was similarly late to the party on other causes of the crisis, such as tackling money laundering and shadow flipping.

Whenever Clark announces some sort of action, it’s always weak and it’s always late.

Why is this? Keep in mind that B.C.’s economy is built on the housing crisis.

Looking at April’s statistics, the largest gain

in the B.C. economy was in construction, specifically real estate.

Forestry, resources, manufacturing and fishing all took major hits in B.C. This has been a common trend in B.C.’s economy of late. So, when you hear Clark boasting about B.C.’s economy, it’s the housing crisis.

It’s the home down the road that’s being torn down and turned into a “megahome.”

It’s the school in your neighbourhood that’s about to close.

So, if you’re wondering why Clark is so late on action all the time, the reason is politics.

All Clark and the BC Liberals have are the economy. An economy built on the housing crisis and a budget balanced on the property transfer tax.

They’re asking you to forget about the scandals, the failure of LNG, the rising provincial debt, the underfunding of public education, the unneeded $9 billion Site C Dam, the escalating Hydro, MSP and ICBC rates — and everything else that is crushing the middle class in British Columbia.

Now, keep this other fact in mind: The BC Liberals’ chair of fundraising is none other than B.C.’s wealthiest real estate marketer, Bob Rennie.

Often dubbed “B.C.’s Condo King,” Rennie has led the charge in making sure Clark and the BC Liberals has its fair share of developer and oil and gas donors to fund themselves through another nasty election campaign.

But these donors want the gravy train called the housing crisis to continue. Any trend slightly downwards in demand will hurt their pockets and subsequently, their ability and willingness to continue contributing to the BC Liberal Party. See where I’m going here?

We do need an increased supply of housing units. But there are two sides to the economic equation.

We need to curb demand and increase supply simultaneously. There have been numer-

ous recommendations, by the Official Opposition in the BC Legislature, by economists, and by real estate experts.

All of these recommendations are things that have been suggested over the last few years and scoffed at by the BC Liberal Government — who then flip-floped just a year later.

The fact that Richmond isn’t considering a vacancy tax yet is mind-numbing.

The latest statistics show that 20 per cent of new real estate transactions in Richmond are from overseas.

A sizeable chunk of these are for vacation homes and investment properties that will lay dormant for most of the year.

Depending on your neighbourhood, these already exist and are increasing in numbers.

This does no good to the local economy. The results will come quickly — schools closing, businesses shutting down and neighbourhoods vanishing.

The least that could be done is having these homes do short-term sublets, but you can’t force that on someone.

It’s in Richmond’s best interests to take action on purposely empty homes, so that we can keep our neighbourhoods vibrant.

What happened to governments that seized crises and showed real leadership to tackle them?

Governments respond to you and I making a stink about things. As U.S. President Barack Obama once said, the most important office is the office of citizen. It’s me and you. It’s us speaking up and speaking out.

We need action, but it starts with us. Be active now and be active come election time.

Take these issues to the polls and make your voices heard.

f you’ve ever wondered what Richmond residents grow in their gardens, balconies and windowsills, a photographic exhibition is about to reveal all.

The bounty of Richmond growers will be showcased and celebrated at Branscombe House from Aug. 15 to 20 with the Richmond Urban Food Garden Project, a photographic exhibition presented by Branscombe’s artist-in-residence, Rhonda Weppler, in collaboration with local food blogger, Michelle Li. Since May, Weppler and Li have photographed local residents in the places and spaces where they grow food; from gardens to windowsills, balconies to backyards and co-ops to community gardens.

Their goal has been to highlight successes and connect these green thumbs with their shared passion, as well as build upon a growing interest in and awareness of food security, climate change and increasing food

costs.

The artists hope to inspire more Richmond residents to grow food and to encourage the creation of spaces where residents can grow food in their neighbourhoods and connect with their community.

Members of the public can view the Richmond Urban Food Garden Project photo exhibition and slideshow at Branscombe House on Steveston Highway at Railway Avenue from Monday to Saturday, Aug. 15–20, from 2–6 p.m. daily.

On a related note, on Sunday, Aug. 14, aspiring artists can drop in anytime between noon and 4 p.m., for “Print vs. Print,” when they can try their hand at two types of printmaking using garden or foraged greens.

he saying goes that there is strength in numbers.

One may want to alter that somewhat to include the aspect of expressive cohesion when it comes to describing the current exhibit at the Richmond Art Gallery, which spotlights the works of Victoria artist Rick Leong and is enhanced by the inclusion of three other Richmond talents who connect their individual styles and disciplines to the show.

Called Rick Leong: The Transformation of Things, the exhibit showcases Leong’s distinctive paintings that capture natural and mythical settings — dense landscapes, star-laden skies and symbolic collections.

Adding to them are watercolours by Winifred Lee, calligraphy created by Li Desheng and ceramics from Ping-Kwong Wong.

This is the first time the gallery has sought to complement a featured artist’s work with pieces from different media, said RAG curator Nan Capogna.

“This is a little bit unusual, but it’s the nature of how we conceived the exhibition,” she said, adding Leong was open to the idea, especially since his work delves into the evolving nature of visual language. “Rick also does a lot of research into Chinese iconography and the history of Chinese painting and brings that into his work.”

So, when the call went out to source the three artists to join and complement the exhibit with their work, Capogna said it was well suited that each produced pieces in other media and had the background of all being immigrants from C China who had “ “evolved” and st started new lives h here in Canada.

“Plus, they a maintained all th practice of the th traditional their (C (Chinese) training a we wanted and to see what c correlations and c connections they were able to make with Rick’s paintings,” she said. “And we were very excited to bring in three artists from Richmond into this different context.

“They are pleased, as well, to be placed in a context like this, where their work can be potentially perceived a little bit differently.”

Nature and quality of life are just two aspects that link the Richmond trio to Leong’s

work.

One of Lee’s contributions is a 24-foot-long watercolour of flowers that folds out from a book called Lotus.

“She has many of these,” Capogna said.

“Obviously, Winnifred (Lee) and Ping (Wong) observe from nature. For him (Wong), he’s fascinated with water birds. And these migrating birds are like he and his wife who moved here.

“And some of the texts that Li (Desheng) has chosen, there’s mention of flora and fauna, plus blessings and good life. Then Leong’s work looks at the community in landscape, also Chinese landscape, and all the symbolism he finds in Chinese art.”

ichmond Public Library is celebrating the end of summer, as well as the achievements of participants in the Summer Reading Club (SRC) program, at a special Finale and Medal Ceremony event at the Brighouse (Main) Branch on Aug. 20 from 1:30 - 4 p.m.

The event is free and no registration is required.

Open to children of all ages and their families, event participants are encouraged to bring their SRC reading booklet to receive their reading medal (for completing the SRC program) at a special ceremony attended by local dignitaries and then “travel

Khatami said the City of Richmond has given them permission to shut off part of the street for the 10 hours.

“Anybody, including other businesses, can get involved; they just need to get in touch with me,” added Khatami.

“It’s not my party, it’s for

As well as a Bavarian-style beer garden, organizers are planning a Mercedes-Benz vintage/new show ‘n’ shine, along with a photo booth, barbecue, tents, prizes and giveaways.

OktoberfeSteveston was crafted by local businessmen Davood Khatami, of Davood’s Bistro, and Dominque Jarry, of Sugar Art, both of whom were part of the group that organized Steveston World Cup Village in 2014.

“We had a feeling that we needed to put something on again in Steveston — something different,” said Khatami, who has the support of several other Steveston businesses, including Steveston Barbers and Steveston Seafood House, which is hosting the Bavarian beer garden.

“So, we thought, ‘let’s have a street party; let’s try it and

everyone in the community and we’re not intending to take business away from anyone; we actually hope to get more people coming into the village.”

Anyone interested in taking part in OktoberfeSteveston, should call Khatami at 604277-2687.

Two years ago, Khatami and Jarry were among a group of local merchants behind Steveston World Cup Village, whereby 32 Steveston businesses “adopted” one of the 32 nations competing in the World Cup of soccer in Brazil.

Each day of the monthlong tournament, Steveston World Cup Village celebrated a “National Day” at, and sometimes outside, one of the participating businesses.

Summer: Any excuse to pause for Prosecco ERICHANSON Sips Happen

C

anadians have a fondness for anything Italian, especially if its name begins with “P.” There’s pasta, parmigiana, Prada and Prosecco! If there was any excuse to pause for a sip of Prosecco, summertime is perfetto (perfect)!

When it’s sunny and hot and you feel rather carefree, this effervescent bubbly fits the bill.

Prosecco is produced from Prosecco (aka Glera) grapes in the Veneto region of Italy, between Venice and the Dolomites in the north. Unlike Champagne, which gets produced in the bottle, Prosecco is made in bulk tanks by the Charmat process. As a result, its prices are a fraction of Champagne, beginning at $14.99.

Like most wines, there are levels of quality and prices with Prosecco.

The entry level is DOC and there are 28 Proseccos of this type in BCLDB stores.

Last weekend, I purchased a bottle of LamarcA Prosecco for $16.99.

I popped the cork on this LamarcA on n A star among Proa hot afternoon as I seccos, the Val d’Oca was cooking a Chick- Valdobbiadene DOCG Extra Dry en Tikka Masala.

I loved the floral and fruit aroma and the golden delicious apple, peach, and honeysuckle flavour.

While it is effervescent, it does not have the persistent bubbles of its expensive cousin, Champagne.

Ironically, it is labeled “Extra Dry,” which actually has a bit of sweetness in the finish, unlike “Brut” which is actually the driest category.

At a wonderful Prosecco tasting sponsored by the Valdobbiadene Prosecco Consortium, I learned that there is a higher level with Prosecco Superiore Valdobbiadene DOCG on the label.

It’s a hilly region in Italy’s Veneto with 43 villages or Rive where the grapes are picked by hand. So unique is this small region that it has applied for UNESCO World Heritage status.

At the tasting, I asked Guilia Pussini from the consortium why Prosecco is so popular these days.

“Prosecco is now appreciated in more than 80 countries around the world,” Pussini boasted.

“It’s a wine whose characteristics are very approachable, very easy to drink. It’s versatile and can be paired with any kind of food,” said Pussini.

“For example, not only Italian cuisine, but also Asian foods like tempura. Or with spicy Chinese cuisine or dim sum. Or with fish, like salmon.

“You don’t have to have a big knowledge of wine to appreciate (it). It’s young, fresh, fruity, floral and pleasant. If you have more knowledge about wine, you can appreciate the differences there are

between the different Rive, which originates in only one municipality.

“It’s a way discover the differences due to soil, climate, and altitude. Everyone can find something interesting and pleasant in our wine.”

Among the six DOCG Proseccos tasted, Val d’Oca Extra Dry Rive di Colbertaldo 2015 ($27.99 at the BCLDB) was really impressive.

It is elegant and refined with aromas

of orange peel, apple, and wisteria. The bubbles are fine and persistent and there is a balance of lightness, softness and a touch of sweetness held in check by the crisp acidity.

Rapids make a splash at Age Group Nationals

t’s been a busy summer on the podium for Richmond Rapids swimmers at a couple of major events to conclude another very productive season.

In Calgary, Charlie Ford, Amanda McCallum, Serena Xue, Ethan Chan, Matthew Crawford, Angel Rodriguez, Jackson Xie, Brian Yu, and coach Drew McClure attended the 2016 Canadian Age Group Championships. It’s the most competitive meet for Canada’s top 18-and-under swimmers.

In order to qualify, swimmers had to achieve a minimum of three national standards. The five-day event allowed only eight swimmers per age group to advance to the final. As it was an achievement to even qualify for the meet, making finals was another accolade in itself.

Xue, in her last age group meet as a Rapid before leaving for the University of Pennsylvania in the fall, made finals in all three breaststroke disciplines. Crawford finished eighth in the 50 backstroke, the first national final of his career.

Two of the gold came from backstroke, where McCallum was virtually untouchable in the last leg, defending two of her titles from 2015.

Both swims were nearly even-split, a mark of focus and skill. McCallum would also earn silver in both IMs and 100- and 200-meter freestyles. The bronze medals were in the 50 freestyle and 50 backstroke.

The remaining gold came on the first night of the meet, and was one of the bigger upsets of the week.

After a rocky start, McCallum qualified eighth in the 100 fly, giving her an outside lane inthe final. After the first 50, McCallum was dead last. Then, charging strong from the outside, she looked to challenge for a medal. With five meters left and a massive surge, McCallum separated herself from the field by .02 to win in a time of 1:03.87.

At the Open Water Championships the following Monday, Ford was the Rapids’ sole representative, as a participant in the women’s 2.25 km.

just 10 meters ahead. Halfway through the second lap, Ford broke away to challenge the second-place swimmer, overtaking with grit, superior line choice, and quality turns at the buoys.

From there, it was all but settled. Ford held off the challenger through the final lap with an eight-meter lead, holding her spot for the silver medal.

With that result in the books, the Rapids had their first ever Open Water medal, and finished each of the six days of racing with a podium finish.

Meanwhile, at the B.C. Summer Games in Abbotsford, Jeremy Fung, Josh Quon, Shane Sagar, Dimitri Volchkov, and Darren Ge represented both the Richmond Rapids and their regional zone in a three-day, heatsand-finals competition.

The Rapids represented the zone well, with dominant performances like the 100 fly, where Ge, Quon, and Fung finished second, third, and fourth in a near sweep. Volchkov won gold in the 50 free and 100 back, and was also on the podium in the 100 free, earning silver.

One of those swims belonged to Xie on the first night of racing. Seeded fifth in the 50 breaststroke, Xie devoted himself to the final 10 meters of the race, solidly placing third to earn bronze.

Also on the podium for the 50 breaststroke was Yu, who dipped under 31 seconds for the first time to snag the gold medal. In spite of having to nurse a shoulder injury, he was on top of two other sprints during the week.

Yu blistered to a 52.92 clocking to win the 100 free by a huge eight tenths.

Controlled and steady on the way out, he hammered the third 25 and was dominant to the finish.

The following day, Yu defended his national title in the 50 freestyle, going 23.88 and qualifying for Canadian World Trials. He was ahead the entire time, widening his lead over an ever-trailing field after an impossible-tomatch middle 20 meters.

McCallum again proved her consistency and versatility, finishing with a truly impressive nine medals out of nine events — consisting of three gold, four silver, and two bronze.

Quilchena’s Lau 4th at Junior Nationals A

busy summer golf schedule included an impressive fourth place finish for Richmond’s Alisha Lau at last week’s Canadian Junior Girls Championships in Nova Scotia.

Playing at the Links of Penn Hills in Shubenacadie, the Quilchena Junior carded rounds of 70-75-73-72 to place seven shots back of winner Naomi Ko from Victoria.

B.C. golfers dominated the leaderboard, with Delta’s Mary Parsons, who plays out of Mayfair Lakes, ending up third at even par, while Cecile Kwon of Maple Ridge was one shot back of Lau. Another local player — National Development Team member Kathrine Chan — finished tied for 17th with rounds of 75-76-73-78.

The 16-year-old Lau was in New Jersey just a couple of weeks earlier after qualifying for the U.S. Junior Girls Championship. The soon-to-be Grade 11 student at Burnett Secondary, actually led the Canadian Junior after the opening round that was played in blustery and hot conditions.

She tallied four birdies on the front nine to make the turn at 3-under, then added another on the par-4 10th hole before bogeys at No. 15 and 17 left her at 2-under on the day.

“I felt pretty good. I got off to a hot start, so that helped boost my confidence,” said Lau. “The front nine was pretty calm because the trees shielded it from the wind, and then on the back nine it really started picking up. I’m playing pretty conservatively and trying to find my happy medium. I don’t hit it too long either, so I can use the bounce from the fairway to really help me.”

Lau’s prevous best finish at Junior Nationals was a T20 in 2014 at Thornhill Golf & Country Club in Thornhill, Ont. In the second round of last year’s championship at Deer Park Golf Course in Yorkton, Sask., she was forced to withdraw due to a bout of food poisoning.

“I took a lot of time off in the winter, so this year I’m just trying to play my game. I haven’t been putting too many expectations on myself.”

Lau was second on the Juvenile (16 and under) scoreboard, behind Ontario’s Chloe Currie.

She also turned in a solid showing at last month’s B.C. Women’s Amateur at Beach Grove in Tsawwassen — finishing sixth with rounds of 75-70-76-74. Right in front of her was Lee (76-73-74-71) thanks to a 1-under final round.

Leung honoured at BC Summer Games T

At the recent BC Summer Games held in Abbotsford, Leung’s team of five Richmond girls representing Zone Vancouver-Coastal went undefeated (7-0) to capture the gold medal in the inaugural U13 3x3 girls basketball event.

In addition, at the closing ceremonies, it was announced that she was one of 16 outstanding youth leaders recognized with a Coast Capital Savings Leadership Bursary.

The bursary recipients were chosen from over 200 applicants for their significant achievements in sport and education and, most importantly, for their leadership contributions to their schools, community, or sport associations.
