There will be an assortment of fine arts events this semester for students, faculty and the Richland community through the School of Humanities, Fine and Performing Arts. All events are free and open to the public.

The cast was selected in August for the Drama Department’s first fall production, “Rashomon,” by Ryunosuke Akutagawa. The plot concerns the wife of a Samurai officer assaulted and killed by a roving bandit.

At the trial, the contradictory versions of what happened are re-enacted by the bandit, the wife and the dead husband who speaks through a sorceress. The production will feature a great deal of stage combat and will run at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 8-11 in Fannin Performance Hall.

The Dance Department will present “Moonstruck,” the fall dance concert, at 12:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Nov. 7, also in Fannin.

Director Gina Sawyer and other dance faculty members hope to dazzle students with an exciting show that will include a variety of styles -- contemporary modern, jazz, tap and hip-hop. Also featured will be the Dallas Black Dance Theater II, directed by Nicole Ray. The Music Department presents its Recital Series every Tuesday at 12:30 p.m. in Fannin Performance Hall, unless otherwise specified.

The recitals began Sept. 2 with the Richland College Faculty Jazz Ensemble. The Fall Lunch Concert Series begins Oct. 16 with the Richland Fusion Band on the stage in the Richland Cafeteria. The Evening Concert Schedule will launch with the “Fall Symphonic Instrumental Concert 1: Power and Passion” and will include the wind symphony, string orchestra and chamber ensembles at 7:30 p.m.

Art Gallery Director John Spriggins kickstarted art events this semester with a painting exhibition by Marcello Pope, aka Rosie Lee. The exhibition will be on display through Friday (Sept.12) in the Brazos Gallery. Visit http://www.rosieleeart.com/ for a glimpse of the variety of art work. Following that will be an exhibition of the Richland full-time and adjunct art faculty from Sept. 15-Oct. 10.

Richland will hold a student clay ceramics sale Dec. 2-4 through the ceramics department.

ThunderDust update The portable electronic billboard inside the Richland East Drive entrance indicated a delay in Richland’s upcoming construction late last week.

Assistant director of facilities Austin Longacre met with City of Dallas officials Aug. 29 to get clarification for the continued delays in campus construction.

The construction area that impacts the soccer fields was redefined, and the landscape mitigation project was streamlined, Longacre said.

As soon as public easements and grading requirements are met, the necessary permits from the City of Dallas should be issued, clearing construction to begin.

No definite date has been set for the beginning of construction.

Voter ID: Too restr ic tive DORIS BROGAN Editor-in-Chief

Voting is a privilege that many people in the world do not have, and that many people in the United States take for granted.

It is also a privilege that some so-called “red” or conservative states are trying to complicate, if not outright deny to some voters.

The 15th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution clearly states, “The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or any state, on account of race, color or previous condition of servitude.”

Nowhere in this amendment does it state a requirement for a picture ID, nor does it require that names on driver’s licenses and voter registration cards be an identical match.

Texas Gov. Rick Perry signed the voter ID bill into law in 2011. The law has come under attack since its implementation on the grounds that it is unconstitutional. It potentially poses undue difficulty to the poorer voting public.

Proponents for and against the voter ID law are split along traditional party lines. Repablicans are for the law and Democrats are against it.

The law had an annoying effect on me, albeit a small one. My voter registration card had my first, middle and last names on it. My driver’s license had my first name, my maiden

name and my last name on it. They obviously weren’t an exact match.

The problem was a simple one for me to fix. Being in possession of a computer, I went online and requested a new voter registration card. It didn’t cost anything and in less than two weeks I had a new card that matched my driver’s license. End of problem.

Sadly, not all Americans have computer access, skills or available funds to solve the problem so quickly. What is merely annoying to me can be an insurmountable problem for some minorities and the desperately poor.

Unfortunately, many of those affected by the voter ID law are poor and/or minorities.

So, once again, minorities and the poor are disenfranchised by partisan politics.

The disparity between those who have and those who don’t have in this country is large and growing ever larger at an alarming rate.

The 15th Amendment is very clear in its guarantee of voting rights for all Americans.

The voter ID law is nothing more than a partisan ploy by conservatives to deny voting rights to a segment of the population that traditionally votes for more liberal candidates.

Midterm elections will be held Nov. 4.

Many people fought and died for our American privilege to vote.

It’s the cornerstone of our democratic society.

Everyone needs to take advantage of the privilege.

The midterm elections coming up Nov. 4 are extremely important because they are going to determine the direction of our country for the next two years until the 2016 presidential election – if we even have one.

I say that because since President Barack Obama won re-election in 2012, we have seen nothing but a dysfunctional Congress and an arrogant president who continues to overstep his powers by bypassing Congress.

To make matters worse, according to a Sept. 3 Associated Press article, a federal judge in Corpus Christi began reviewing the new Texas voter ID rules. It’s being challenged by the Obama administration in acourt. However, there will be no decision before this election.

Republican Gov. Rick Perry signed the voter ID law into effect in 2011, but a court ruled that it would discriminate against the poor and minorities based on Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act – and the battle has raged on ever since.

Section 5 required some states with a history of discrimination to seek approval from the U.S. Justice Department or a federal court before changing laws.

This is completely ridiculous. Americans provide identification every single day for basic transactions such as cashing paychecks,

opening bank accounts or for a variety of other reasons. It’s no big deal to prove who you are if you have nothing to hide. A driver’s license is fine and, for the elderly and disabled, perhaps a home visit to create a free voter ID would do.

As The Associated Press reported March 1 the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in 2008 that “states can require voters to produce photo ID at the polls without violating their constitutional rights.”

Yet, Obama and U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder continue to hassle Texas and other states that have this law. I believe voter ID should be a law in every state to combat voter fraud and to uphold the integrity of the voting process.

So far, there have been no problems with voters over this law in Texas.

Texans will go to the polls Nov. 4 for a heated governor’s race between Republican Greg Abbott and Democrat Wendy Davis.

Both are lawyers. Abbott is the 50th state attorney general and former State Supreme Court justice. Davis is from Fort Worth and represents District 10 in the Senate. Last year she drew national attention with her filibuster on an abortion restriction bill.

I hope voters will watch the one televised debate set for Sept. 19 in McAllen. So far, our state has remained strong, but choosing the wrong candidate could mean Texas will end up like New York or California. That would be dreadful.

The last day to register to vote in Texas is Oct. 6. The first day of early voting is Oct. 20; the last, Oct. 31. Non-partisan volunteers will have a table in the El Paso Hall corridor to register people to vote on Sept. 9, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Be sure to register to vote!

If you ‘Stay,’ bring a hanky RICKY MILLER Entertainment Editor

Expect waterworks.

Like this summer’s other teen entry, “The Fault in Our Stars,” the filmmaking team behind “If I Stay” deliberately pulls at the heartstrings to make one weep uncontrollably. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, but to me it was a tad depressing.

The story here is about a musically inclined family; Chloë Grace Moretz’s Mia Hall is proficient at the cello.

After a near-death experience, a car wreck that involved the entire family, Mia awakens in the hospital with no loved ones alive to see that she is still around. Can we say, “Major coma predicament?”

The problem with this flick is the overdone melodrama that occurs. The one standout, however, is Stacy Keach, referred to only as Gramps. The scenes with him are a handful of the ones during which I actually teared up.

It does not disappoint completely, getting a positive grade from me for one reason only.

There is an unexpected twist to the proceedings, hence my positive grade.

Like a lot of movies of late, this one comes from a young adult genre author, Gayle Forman. Shauna Cross, whose only other credits are Drew Barrymore’s “Whip It,” and

“What to Expect When You’re Expecting,” wrote the screenplay.

When it comes down to it, this is a great date movie for people who connect and feel that all-encompassing spark.

His name is Brosnan … Pierce Brosnan.

For the longest time, they had him pegged to play British secret agent James Bond, 007.

By they, I am referring to producer Albert R. Broccoli, his family and all the big-wigs at MGM, who in the 1980s hired Timothy Dalton for a

couple of flicks with “The Living Daylights” (1987) and the better “Licence to Kill” (1989).

Originally, Brosnan was to play the esteemed agent, but the TV show he was on, “Remington Steele,” turned into a big hit for CBS and the network did not want to lose their golden goose.

Years passed and, lo and behold, Brosnan finally got his chance to play Bond in director Martin Campbell’s “GoldenEye” in 1995.

Brosnan fronted a quartet of Bond flicks with “GoldenEye,” as well as “Tomorrow Never Dies,” “The World is Not Enough” and “Die Another Day.” It’s evident, that Brosnan can still intrigue and enthrall, as seen in his latest, the spy thriller “The November Man.” It’s like Al Pacino’s infamous rant in “The Godfather: Part III,” “Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in.” This is exactly what happens with Brosan’s ex-CIA operative named Devereaux.

Devereaux feels he is safe in his normal everyday life, but after a botched kidnapping involving some ne’er-do-wells, Devereaux is thrust back into the life he thought he left behind.

What also throws a monkey wrench into the works is his young daughter who nobody at the agency even knows he has.

Also key to the storyline is Olga Kurylenko’s Alice, who suffered years of abuse via Lazar Ristovski”s Arkady Federov. It is intriguing to see what elements of vengeance are woven into the storyline. In the end, however, this is like Steven Spielberg’s update “War of the Worlds” (2005), where you may have been intrigued at the start, but might find yourself asking, “Where did my time go?” Grade: C+ —Ricky Miller

He’s outta there!

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) -- Texas Rangers manager Ron Washington unexpectedly resigned Friday, saying he needed to devote his full Image courtesy cdn.com attention to an “off-the-field personal matter.”

The stunning announcement came a day after the Rangers (53-87) lost their sixth straight game and became the first team in the majors mathematically eliminated from playoff contention.

Only three years ago, Texas reached its second consecutive World Series under Washington.

Washington issued a statement in which he said his resignation had nothing to do with the disappointing season. He did not disclose any details of why he was leaving.

“I have submitted my resignation from the job I love - managing the Rangers - in order to devote my full attention to addressing an off-the-field personal matter.

As painful as it is, stepping away from the game is what’s best for me and my family,” Washington said. “This is in no way related to the disappointing performance of the team this season.

General manager Jon Daniels also refused to go into specifics for the reasons for Washington’s decision, outside of saying that the manager had given the team permission to acknowledge that the move “was not drug-related.”

Players show off talent on the mini court The pinging and ponging for the championship at a table tennis tournament in the Guadalupe Hall gym Thursday was intense.

Students, faculty and pretty much anyone else was allowed to join in the fun.

The first table tennis competition at Richland was back in the ‘70s. John Stanson, a physical education teacher for 40 years at

Richland, said, “This is the first time we’ve played table tennis in about uh, I’m going to guess 38 years, because the tables were broken and we never replaced them.”

There were 36 participants, 18 in the recreation division and 18 in the competitive division.

Everybody that participated received a Thunderduck T-shirt. “It’s for fun,” Stanson said.

Chau Ly, who retired from Richland after 32 years, took first place.

Daniel Sanchez, 18, came in second. Sanchez is studying for his associates in science.

Within the AFC are two of, arguably, the greatest quarterbacks in league history – NFL golden boy Tom Brady and Peyton Manning, son of legend Archie and brother to Eli. But the AFC is more than Hall of Fame quarterbacks. It’s loaded with defense and young talent. Let’s take a look at the AFC North. Troy Palamalu, Ray Rice and Andy Dalton are just a few all-pro players who dwell in this defense-minded division.

Of the four divisions in the AFC, this is by far the toughest. Cincinnati is widely regarded as a team with a promising future.

Quite frankly, I believe that future is now, with Andy Dalton setting career highs in both yards (4,293) and touchdowns (33) along with deadly wide-out A.J. Green, the Bengals are loaded in the passing game.

“It’s their offense,” said 21-year-old Richland student Lonnie White when talking about his “sleeper” pick in the AFC. The reason I have the Bengals winning the division at 11-5 is due to their consistency on both sides of the football.

The Steelers, however, grab a wildcard spot and Baltimore, who won Super Bowl XLVII just two years ago, misses the playoffs.

The Colts are poised to thrust themselves into championship contention alongside Denver and New England coming out of the AFC West.

A little luck and the Colts cruise to 12-4.

The Patriots reside in one of the weakest divisions in the NFL, the AFC East.

Brady will mop the floor with his division, although the Jets may cause some problems like they seem to every year with defensive guru Rex Ryan.

The worst I see the Patriots doing this season is 13-3.

A Darrelle Revis-infused defense and business-as-usual offense has me punching the Pats’ ticket to the conference championship.

“You always have to watch the Patriots,” said Charlie Vann, a 26-year-old general studies major.

But Vann also added that, “People have figured out the Patriots”. Lastly, this brings me to the AFC West, home of my “sleeper” pick, the San Diego Chargers.

No, I do not have them at all challenging Denver for the division title, but I do see them sneaking into the playoffs and grabbing that second wildcard spot at 10-6.

Denver at a dominant 14-2 will take the division.

I envision Manning having another monster year and leading their championship efforts.

One blow this team will have to sustain is the loss of Pro Bowl wide receiver Wes Welker. Welker was suspended four games Wednesday for performance enhancing drugs.

A 21-year-old business major Saccie Pitre said, “They (Broncos) won’t miss him (Welker) at all. They have other receivers to fill in for him” The championship game will feature legends in perhaps their last real chance to win a ring; Manning in Denver and Brady in New England.

This historic showdown, I think, will end with Denver being outcoached and a suspect defense exposed by the duo of Coach Bill Bellichik and Brady.

“I think the Broncos have a little better team,” Vann said.

White added, “They have a complete team this year.”

Clearly I’m alone in thinking Brady will overtake Manning.

Nevertheless, the AFC is destined to come down to a battle of the stars.

Student relates story of family tragedy

As violence continues to escalate in Iraq, the world turns its attention to that region once again.

Just recently, militants associated with the terrorist group Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS), or “Islamic State,” beheaded American journalist James Foley and posted the video of the beheading online, in what they claimed to be a retaliation for the recent air strikes launched by the American government.

Although this topic is of importance to the international community in general, it is of special and personal importance for the Iraqis living in Dallas, many of whom are students here at Richland.

In 2008, the U.S. Department of State was authorized to issue Special Immigrant Visas (SIVs) to Iraqi nationals under the National Defense Authorization Act of 2008.

One of the requirements for acceptance to the program is to have worked with the United States troops or diplomats in Iraq for a minimum of 12 months, and, more importantly, to be in imminent danger of losing one’s life.

For the Iraqis who are now living in Dallas, that imminent danger was defined by the fact that at least one of their family members had been murdered by a militant group in Iraq.

During my very first semester at Richland in the summer of 2011, my younger brother, 18, and my cousin, 15, were abducted by the

militia in Baghdad. A week after their abduction, I was sitting in Wichita Hall waiting for professor Clive Siegel’s history class to begin when I decided to check my email.

He’s dead.

The email I received contained only these words, but there was also a link to a website.

To my misery, the link contained the video of the torture, mutilation and dismemberment of my brother and cousin.

To save you from further gore and depressing details, I ask you to trust me when I say I know how it feels to lose family in a horrible way.

As I was driving to campus last week, I heard on the radio that the second American journalist, Steven Sotloff, was beheaded by ISIS. Every time I hear of a beheading, memories of my brother, and dozens of other family and friends who ended this way, ring a deafening bell. When I got to school, I ran into my aunt, Alia Sami, 42, an English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) student whose son was murdered with my brother three years ago. She was sitting alone, holding on to a scarf and weeping in solitude.

I didn’t need to ask or say a word. I knew right away that she had watched the news.

The scarf she was clinging to was my cousin’s favorite.

I decided to ask other Iraqi-Americans on campus their opinions on the recent upheaval in Iraq. When I asked Fadia Metta, a 24 yearold-Iraqi Christian and medical major who was born and raised in Mosul, which is now

the headquarters of ISIS, Fadia said: “my town in Mosul was attacked by IS and many of my extended family and neighbors were subjected to executions.

“Every time I hear something in the news, I pray that this would be the last bad thing I hear.”

Fatima Mahdi, a Shia Kurd from the city of Kirkuk, said that her dad was beheaded by the militants when she was in Iraq in 2008.

“They decapitated him in our garage right before our eyes,” she said as she wept. “I don’t know if I will ever recover from that nightmare.”

Omar Al-Mahalawi, a 17-year-old Sunni born in Al-Anbar, who is now studying chemical engineering, said, “A few dozen men from my tribe, including my uncles, cousins and three brothers, were rounded up, executed and dumped into a mass grave.

My tribe opposed the militants and we ended up paying a hefty price,” he said.

Omar was only 9 when that happened.

Although it is tragedy that brought these students and me together, I still felt a sense of relief after listening and sharing the ordeals that weigh heavily on my heart.

As I was headed to Sabine Hall, I got on my phone and started calling the Iraqi families I know in Dallas.

I have asked them to join me in writing condolence letters to the families of the slain journalists, to express our sadness and show solidarity, on behalf of the millions of good Iraqis, here and abroad.

I was speaking Arabic when one of the students overheard me.

She asked: “How many more of us are your people going to kill?” I paused for a second, with a tear in my eye, only to be interrupted by another student, who answered her: “Be mindful.

The question is: How many more of his family and friends are the militants going to kill?”

Does race really matter in today’s world?

On Aug. 9, Michael Brown, an unarmed young African–American man, was shot by white police officer Darren Wilson in Ferguson, Mo. Following this incident, Ferguson’s citizens in a predominantly African-American neighborhood started to protest, demanding answers about the incident from the police department.

The answer from the local authorities to the protesters led to a series of violent events.

Some people may think that Wilson was doing his job and protecting his own life that day, and others may think that it was a clear example of how the color of people’s skin is a determining factor between life and death.

Most people agree that they want justice in this case because the fact is an unarmed teenager was shot.

In spite of all the controversy and different opinions about the case, there is something that it is true: People deserve to know the truth no matter what it is.

Sadly, it is not the first incident of this kind that has happened. People should stop and think about whether race matters and what everyone can do to decrease the racial tension and improve human relationships in a global multicultural society.

velopment professor, when people try to pretend that color doesn’t matter or doesn’t make any difference between human beings, they are not helping to reduce the racial tension between community and public organizations.

Although some people see the importance of having a better understanding of different cultures and dream of no color difference between humans, there is a well-known long history of racial segmentation, especially among minority groups.

“For young black men growing up in this country, they have to understand that it is different for them and they have to take it everywhere they go,” Office of Student Life Director Carter Bedford said. “It’s sadly true.”

However, it is not just an African-American community problem because as people could see in Ferguson, protesters were members of different minorities.

So, it is important, especially in this country, which has growing minority communities, to know what the average citizen should know to try to improve interracial relationships and try to reduce racial tension, which is a growing problem as well.

“Education is a powerful tool,” Bedford said. Bedford added that one important thing people can do is make sure they are getting information from different sources; not only from one. It can help to form a better understanding of any situation.

According to Thompson, one of the first things we have to do is accept and talk about our own feelings. He said that in our society many times it is not acceptable to externalize our emotions and they stay just like thoughts and can become hurt feelings.

“Waking up is a difficult process,” Thompson said.

“Whatever city you live in, whatever state you live in, you need to encourage your leaders in business, in government, in higher education and in our schools to seek opportunities to dialogue,” sociology professor LaQueta Wright said.

“The main thing that you can do is be tolerant, to be understanding, to try to put yourself in somebody’s shoes,” Moore said.

A group of Richland professors and other leaders are planning an open conversation about race education and how society can move forward after this kind of event, which will be open to the public.

The date for this meeting is not set yet, but it is being scheduled for the end of September.

Bedford said some of the things that are going to be discussed are how to respect and love everybody just for who they are and not for the way they look.

Kennedy Perry, 17, graduated from Lake Highlands High School.

She is the second-youngest of five children.

Perry grew up in South Dallas and now lives in Cedar Hill.

She is taking basic courses for now, but wants to study linguistics and teach overseas, “I want to teach kids English.”

Perry likes to play basketball. “I’m not very good at it. But I still shoot the hoops.”

She likes to sleep, but has not been able to get a lot of it. “I work and go to school.”

Perry works at Delia’s, a clothing store for teens at Northpark Center.

She likes to play video games and prefers to play on the Xbox console. “I like ‘Call of Duty: Ghosts,’ ‘Grand Theft Auto,’ basketball games. I’m really good at the video games.

“I like thrillers and horror movies,” Perry said. She has been into these types of movies since she was little, something about all the gore in scary movies is what gets her adrenaline going.

She also likes “white boy comedies,” as the calls them. “They typically involve white guys

doing like really stupid stuff.” Movies such as “Pineapple Express” and “Superbad.” “They have white boy humor and I enjoy it. “I am currently very into K-pop which is Korean pop music,” Perry said.

About five years ago, her cousin introduced her to this interesting genre of music and she has been obsessed with it ever since.

She also likes the music videos. “The videos are really cool because it’s (sic) bright and colorful. The fashion is like really cool and it’s really out there. It’s really entertaining.”

Perry loves eating her mom’s meatloaf.

“My mom makes this meatloaf, she calls it the ‘cheeseburger meatloaf,’ It’s not cheeseburger in it, but it kinda tastes like one in a sense. There’s bacon and all this other really good stuff. It’s so good.” Perry said that her mom rarely makes the dish, unless she begs her to.

Perry likes the fact that a lot of her high school friends are also students at Richland.

“You think after high school, you won’t see your friends anymore because you’ll go your separate ways, but I still get to see them.”

She likes the classroom settings and how easy it is to talk to the professors after class for help. Perry also likes the good looking young gentlemen on campus.
