American West tunes delight audience PETE SHANNON Staff Writer

Dr. David Grogan, a bass/baritone and singing instructor at The University of Texas at Arlington, performed a recital at noon Sept. 23 in Fannin Hall that began with polite applause and ended with shouted accolades.

His program consisted of six sets of songs with themes from the American West that ranged from formal art songs to rough cowboy in style. He was accompanied by Charlene Sutton on the piano and in two parts of his performance by former Richland singing students Drew Bramlett and Greg Perry.

Dressed informally in a western shirt and dark jeans with a large silver belt buckle, Grogan obviously enjoyed his work because a smile often played on his face as he sang.

His first set was four songs sung in Spanish by the 20th century Argentinian composer Carlos Guastavino.

Next came four unlikely consonant songs written by the American, Charles Ives which, according to Grogan, belied Ives’ reputation for writing dissonant music. These were “When Stars Are in the Quiet Skies,” “Charlie Rutlage,” “The Indian” and “The Greatest Man.” During these songs there was some dramatic speaking in the midst of the singing

which presented an interesting change in style.

Grogan was then joined on stage by Bramlett and Perry for a rendition of “Lonesome Polecat” from the movie musical “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers.”

Next came a set of four songs by the contemporary American composer Steven Mark Kohn. One lyric was especially sad as it went, “I’m a stranger here. I would go home, but, honey, I’m a stranger there.” It was followed by “The Gallows Tree,” a song that relates a tale of a man about to be hanged who is saved by his beloved who has managed to raise the money for his release. “Hell in Texas” ended this set on a high note and enlivened the audience.

Grogan’s rich baritone voice seemed quite comfortable while singing in the tenor range, but he also displayed impeccable diction especially during the three songs he sung which were taken from the 1954 operetta “Arizona Lady” by the Hungarian composer Emmerich Kalman. This is a little-known work that displays the fascination by some Europeans for the imaginary lore of the American West.

The program concluded with the return of Bramlett and Perry, who served as a harmonious background for Grogan’s lively performance while singing and strumming the guitar of “Man of Constant Sorrow” from the movie “O Brother, Where Art Thou?”

Richland leadership: Take it from the top DORIS BROGAN Editor-in-Chief

This is the first in a series of articles featuring the Richland leadership team.

From her initial career as a nurse, to community college administrator, to the presidency of Richland College (RLC), Dr. Kay Eggleston has had an interesting and exciting journey. She understands that change is a necessary force in our lives and views Richland as a destination to affect positive change.

“We all have to continue to reinvent ourselves,” she said. “And what better place than Richland College?”

Eggleston has navigated through the daily challenges of piloting RLC, the largest of the seven Dallas County Community College District schools, for nearly five years.

She was named interim president in January 2010 and assumed the presidency in May 2012.

The management of an institution as large as Richland, with a $59 million budget, 43 acres of buildings and infrastructure and 1,500 employees is not an easy feat. It’s a lot of responsibility.

Eggleston, however, is well qualified for the challenge with a Ph.D in management and administrative sciences from the University of Texas at Dallas and 16 years of community college leadership experience.

Eggleston describes Richland as a community of people seeking opportunities for improvement. From high school graduates to senior citizens, each student is looking for enrichment through education. All want “to improve their life situation, have a better quality of life, and I think that’s a universal thread,” she said. “Students have a lot of challenges being able to pursue their

educational dreams and sometimes I think students feel very alone.”

International students form a large part of the Richland population. “The amazing diversity we have here, this culture at Richland College is just unsurpassed … and that’s part of what makes, I think, this institution so unique,” Eggleston said.

Mobius T. Duck, Richland’s mascot, is an example of Richland’s joyful, playful side.

“Joy is one of our values,” Eggleston said. “I celebrate our successes joyfully. I think this is a noble purpose here at Richland College because our students are our future. I get to be the person who is at the helm of this amazing institution; I consider it a privilege every day.

I truly do.”

Eggleston recently led the college through an arduous process of reaccreditation.

Richland college must go through the

accreditation process every 10 years with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC).

This process includes providing proof of compliance with 12 core requirements, the development of a quality enhancement plan and 54 comprehensive standards that must be met.

The U.S. Secretary of Education has 11 federal requirements that must also be met. A fifthyear interim report and quality enhancement plan and impact report must be completed as well.

Eggleston said online programs are an interesting and challenging part of the accreditation process that didn’t even exist 10 years ago. They have to be authenticated to ensure that students in those classes are the actual people doing the work.

Eggleston sees Richland as a place to find and fund the future. Through its affordable tuition, federal Pell grants and many scholarship opportunities, Richland is a powerful tool to stem the tide of encroaching poverty.

“We’re the most affordable and high quality educational opportunity that a student can find. Period. End of story.”

Responsible risk taking is an essential component of a successful institution.

Eggleston’s philosophy is, “If we never take a risk or fail, then we are not living up to our full potential.”

And she definitely believes in Richland’s potential. “Part of Richland’s success has been our innovation, agility and responsible risk taking. If you don’t take risks you don’t grow … You won’t succeed to the potential that’s inside each of us, so that’s also one of the important tenets of who we are and what makes us an exceptional organization,” she said.

Student success is Eggleston’s highest priority. She stressed the importance of stable, visionary and committed leadership to create an infrastructure that supports student success.

Richland’s faculty and staff are “people who are deeply and passionately committed to student success.

“For us it is the continuing desire to do better than we did the last semester, the last week, the last year, whatever the demarcation point is.

“My role, in my frame of thinking, is to inspire the vision and to mobilize an entire college in alignment to that vision. And that vision is all directed to student success,” Eggleston said.

“I’m very proud of what we’ve accomplished together. It’s not the person who sits in the president’s office, but it’s an entire organization that creates exceptional outcomes.”

Retired magistrate commemorates signing of Constitution JOYCE JACKSON Copy Editor

In 1976, the United States Congress passed a law that required all publicly funded institutions to recognize Constitution Day on Sept.

17, commemorating the signing of the Constitution on the same day in 1787.

William Sanderson Jr., a retired U.S. magistrate judge who served for 31 years in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas, was on campus Sept. 17 to discuss “Does the Constitution Protect our Right to Privacy?”

“The constitution doesn’t contain the word, ‘privacy,’” Sanderson said. “There’s a debate about at what point it protects our privacy.

The idea of privacy protected by the Constitution has been upheld by the Supreme

Court and yet, there’s a significant debate about what that means. ” Sanderson first discussed a number of important historical events, such as the Constitutional Convention, ratification by the 13 states, the Articles of Confederation, the Great Compromise, the three branches of federal government and slavery, among others.

Sanderson said the Supreme Court decided two important cases arising under the Fourth Amendment in its very last term.

“The Fourth Amendment prohibits unreasonable searches and seizures of persons, houses, papers and effects,” Sanderson said.

He cited one case, Reilly v. California, because it poses the question of whether police need a search warrant before examining the contents of a cell phone after its owner had been placed under arrest.

“Now the law generally permits police to search a person at the time of that person’s arrest if he or she has been lawfully arrested and to seize anything in his possession, which frequently involves items which connect the arrestee with the victim of the crime,” Sanderson said.

“A cell phone doesn’t constitute papers and effects of the arrestee because there were no cell phones in existence in the summer of 1791, when the Fourth Amendment became effective.

“However, on the other hand, in the 21st century, the contents of a cell phone are analogous to a person’s papers and effects.”

Sanderson said that the unanimous decision of all nine justices in this case held that a warrant was required.

In Fernandez v. California, the police answered a domestic disturbance call, in which

they arrested the husband, who refused the request to allow them to search his house. But, his wife didn’t and allowed police to search.

“It wasn’t quite as clear as the decision in the Reilly case,” Sanderson said. “It was a split decision.

Six justices said the wife could consent to the search and they upheld the validity of that search.”

“The right of privacy is not explicitly set out in the words of the Constitution; however, when determining whether a search conducted by law enforcement officers is legal, the courts ask whether the person whose rights are issued had a legitimate ‘expectation of privacy’ in the premises and the contents of whatever was seized,” he said.

Action does speak louder than words, or in this case, fists with Adam Wingard’s “The Guest” and Scott Frank’s enthralling “Walk Among the Tombstones.”

The ironic twist is that both flicks feature British actor Dan Stevens, who displays differing but similar personalities in each case.

With “The Guest,” Stevens is a sheep in wolves’ clothing, claiming to be a former soldier of a fallen friend he served with in Iraq. He pulls off the nice guy charm while showing a vicious side on rare occasions, only to offer a side helping of the skull-andcrossbones.

He becomes friends with everyone in the family, including mom Laura Peterson (Sheila Kelley, “Singles,” “Matchstick Men”) and dad Spencer, (Leland Orser, “Taken,” “Alien: Resurrection”) as well as sister Anna (Maika Monroe, “The Bling Ring”) and brother Luke (Brenden Meyer, “The Tooth Fairy”).

“The Guest” harkens back to the days of bad Cannon Film action flicks like “Invasion U.S.A,” and the Chuck Norris stinker “Hero and the Terror.” I spoke with Wingard after the screening of “The Guest” and he mentioned he tried to get access to Cannon’s library since the studio is now bankrupt. At the beginning of the flick, there is kind of an homage to Cannon, since he could not get around all the red tape to gain access to their library.

In “A Walk Among the Tombstones,” Stevens is Kenny Kristo, a drug dealer whose wife disappears mysteriously, even after a hefty ransom is paid. He, like so many other drug dealers, is vile and evil. James Franco was the exception as the engaging Saul Silver in “Pineapple Express.”

Kristo hires Matt Scudder (Liam Neeson), a private investigator, to look into what happened with his wife and her disappearance. Scudder usually likes to fly solo, but after a run-in with a homeless youth named TJ (Astro) in the library, he inexplicably ends up with the wayward kid as a sort of backup in his life.

Also nifty is the gritty realism that harkened back to my favorites from the 1970s era that included Wiliam Friedkin’s “The French Connection” and Sidney Lumet’s “Serpico.”

Another ´70s-era flick that was equally intriguing was Philip D’Antoni’s “The Seven Ups” with Roy Scheider wherein the NYC streets never looked so scuzzy and grimy.

The streets have a certain grit and ambience that shows in director Frank’s handling of the subject matter. The movie was not confined to a studio back lot.

One thing puzzles me. The kidnappers and killers are a very strange and weird gay couple whose status is never fully explained.

Frank knows how to complement the action with the dramatic strides while always keeping the viewer interested in the story.

Sure, some spots are predictable, but as a solid flick, one could not ask for more pretzel twists and turns.

Like Neeson’s role in the so-so “NonStop,” his character has a drinking problem that has an end result involving a dead child.

That happens early in the story, but Frank knows moviegoers are a fickle lot. He just glances over that part early on, only to go back to it later.

“A Walk Among the Tombstones” delivers the goods in almost every single department. One could do a lot worse and spend hard-earned money on other fodder.

Setting the tone for ‘V’ time CHARLIE VANN Staff Writer

Dallas Morning News columnist and WFAA contributor Mercedes Olivera was on campus Sept. 18 to discuss “The Dream is Now,” a 30-minute documentary, followed by a short discussion of the film.

The event commemorated Hispanic Heritage Month.

The documentary focuses on four collegeage youths: Ola, who came from Albania and has dreams of being an oncologist; Erika, who came to the U.S. at 11 and is a leader of the national Dream Movement; Alejandro, who went into the Marine Corps and was a city core staff commander, and José, a math scholar who was awarded a scholarship to Arizona State University.

The movie focuses on the foursome and tells how they are all in a state of limbo by being undocumented and have a fear of being deported.

They’ve made a bargain with their families that by working hard and doing everything right, they thought they could find success in America.

“Dream” stands for Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors.

The long road to immigration reform began in 1986, when Congress passed the last major overhaul of U.S immigration laws, providing a path to legalization for about 3 million of the undocumented immigrants living in this country.

Through the years, the Dream Act has been introduced in Congress, but has gone nowhere.

In 2001, it was introduced to the Senate, but died in committee.

In 2010, it passed in the House but fell short on the Senate floor – five votes shy of becoming a law.

The bill would have provided conditional permanent residency to certain immigrants who arrived in the United States as minors, graduated from U.S. high schools and had lived in the country continuously for at least five years prior to the bill’s enactment.

If immigrants were to complete two years in the military or two years at a four-year institution of higher learning, they would obtain temporary residency for a six-year period.

Olivera said in a discussion after the film that the Central American children came with their mothers and flooded the system.

President Barack Obama said he couldn’t do anything about immigration reform before the mid-term elections because of these children.

Olivera asked the audience for reaction to the film.

One attendee said, “It was sad.” Another said, “I think it showed you should never give up.”

As of November 2013, 15 states have their own versions of the Dream Act, which deal with tuition prices and financial aid for state universities.

“They are called ‘dreamers’ because of the Dream Act,” Olivera said. “They are not getting into college. In Texas, the Dream Act allows them to go to college. It’s different from the national Dream Act.” One attendee asked if the dreamers had applied for citizenship.

“The process is very long and very costly,” Olivera said. “It could take as long as 20 years.

There’s such a huge backlog. People can be here for years and nothing gets done.”

Maroon 5’s new album “V” is out.

more fans or bring some kind of evolution to their legacy. It doesn’t always work out for the best.

“V” is not one of those albums. Maroon 5 fans will be satisfied with this new album.

There are still love-driven, passionate songs that are so common with the band. The band’s last album, “Overexposed,” might have been a little over-the-top pop, as it was considered to be one of the band’s “poppiest.” “Overexposed” also got mixed reviews after it was released.

Overall, “V” is a lot of fun. Most Maroon 5 fans will enjoy it, maybe a little more than casual fans.

Maroon 5 knows who their fans are. They know what they like to hear from them.

Fans won’t be shocked or surprised by what they hear, and I mean that in a good way.

People who are not fans might enjoy this one, too.

Like I said before, the music is fun. Give it a listen.

Maroon 5 is back with their fifth studio album, “V.” Of course, “V” is fitting for the title, since it represents the number five in Roman numerals. The “V” on the cover of the album really stands out, lit up in eye-catching neon red.

One thing about album covers is that they can set the tone for what you are about to hear. Sometimes, they are just random art work, hoping to stand out to the listener. I’m not entirely sure what the band really wanted to accomplish with this cover, other than the fact the “V” stands for five.

I like the style they went for. If you look in the background, you can see the words Maroon 5 across a mountainside. That was kind of cool, almost like the Hollywood sign.

They might have done that because they are from Los Angeles.

As for the album itself, “V” doesn’t stray too far from that familiar Maroon 5 sound.

You still feel that you still get that pop rock tone with this album. Whether or not you are a fan of the band, lead singer Adam Levine always delivers vocally.

What really helps with any Maroon 5 album, and with this one in particular, is Levine’s voice. He has a soulful tone when he sings, which reels in the listener.

With “V” it doesn’t come across like they are trying to experiment or trying something too different.

Richland’s men’s soccer team pulled off another victory against Mountain View College at home on Thursday, 6-0.

At press time, Richland had played 11 games with only one loss and a tie, becoming one of the strongest teams in the conference.

“We are playing good. We have lots of guys who are contributing. We have a really strong team,” head coach Sean Worley said.

Despite all the victories, the team and the coaches are keeping their feet on the ground.

“We just take the victories in our hands and keep moving forward,” midfielder Mac Reyes said. “We just played like a team. We just wanted to score and that’s what we got.”

Forward Tobias Benner, who made his debut against Mountain View (although he has been on the team since last season), was one of the players who made the victory possible.

“It was a good game. It was my first game and my first goal,” Benner said.

Benner added that he had to wait until this game because last year his physical condition was not good enough, but he worked hard and it has paid off.

“I’m happy and I hope to score in the next game,” Banner said.

The Thunderducks, however, know they have to play as a team.

“Everybody is good. We don’t have one great [player] or one bad. We have 25 good players,” Worley said.

“Everybody can improve something,” goalkeeper Igor DoNacimiento said.

At press time, the Thunderducks were scheduled to play at home against Paul Quinn College Friday and Murray State College on Saturday.

Richland’s women’s soccer team rolled over Cedar Valley Friday, 6-0.

“It was pretty exciting,” forward Alexandra Arzabala said. “We just put in a lot of effort and got the result that we wanted.”

“The previous games we didn’t do it great … but this time, we played our own game,” midfielder Sabrina Machorro said.

Although the Thunderducks have improved, they know they can’t relax efforts to be ready for the national championship.

“We have a really strong team as individuals as well. And when you put everything together, it is great,” Marrocho said.

At press time, the Thunderdcks were scheduled to play Murray State College on Saturday and Mountain View College at 4 p.m today.

Black eye: What’s going on in the NFL? CHARLIE VANN Staff Writer

With the NFL season under way, most fans, and anyone involved with professional football, have their attention on the games ahead.

There is one major issue, however, that has been grabbing attention since earlier this month.

The incident involving Baltimore Ravens’ running back Ray Rice.

A video reached the surface (via TMZ)showing Rice not only hitting his then-financée, Janay Palmer, but knocking her out with a punch in an elevator in Atlantic City, New Jersey, back in February.

Rice was indicted in March for the assault and was suspended by the league for the first two games of the season.

But once the video of the assault was aired, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell suspended Rice indefinitely and his contract with the Ravens was terminated.

Rice is now not the only one who is facing assault charges, however.

Recently, Arizona Cardinals’ running back Jonathan Dwyer was deactivated from all team activities

after his wife reported that she had been assaulted by Dwyer back in July.

Dwyer has been scheduled for a status conference for Oct 6 and will have a preliminary hearing Oct 9.

The craziness doesn’t stop there.

Minnesota Vikings’ running back Adrian Peterson was indicted on Sept. 12 for negligent injury to his 4-year-old son.

Peterson said he whipped his son with a switch. Photos of his sons’ slash marks surfaced on TMZ. Peterson has since been deactivated by the Vikings.

According to Chris Mortensen of ESPN, the Vikings don’t foresee Peterson in their future.

So what kind of light does this put the NFL in? Roger Goodell is already under the microscope for allegedly knowing about the Rice video ahead of time.

Some people say, if it is true that he knew about the video, he should resign.

So, the ultimate question now is, what happens next?

What happens next?

First, there needs to be a decision on the respective NFL cases. But let’s assume the three high-profile players are found guilty.

As far as Ray Rice and Adrian Peterson, a guilty verdict would end their careers, along with their freedom, for the foreseeable future. Roger Goodell, who’s on the hot seat for his mishandling of the Rice situation, will ultimately keep his job as commissioner of the NFL because of the support from the 32 NFL owners, unless, of course, it is found that he lied about not seeing the second elevator video of Rice.

The bigger outcome from these assaults is the handling of future issues of domestic violence and child abuse.

Nevertheless, domestic violence isn’t some new phenomenon in the NFL or society for that matter.

But the days of, “Hear no evil, see no evil” are gone.

With the social climate having changed and awareness for these

issues at its peak in the sporting world, reaction and punishment will be swift and the NFL will drop the hammer.

Stricter punishments coupled with increased attention and, naturally, overreaction will be what we will witness throughout the NFL. Some may say the stiffer penalties could act as a deterrent, but I beg to differ.

The NFL may be able to improve its image and distance itself from these players in the short term, but, unfortunately, we will continue to see cases come to light.

The issues plaguing the NFL at this moment are much more deeply rooted than just football.

It is a societal and cultural defect that exists within this country, a culture where young men are not held accountable for their actions because of their athletic ability.

If this mindset continues, all the progress the NFL has made over the past several years to become a more family oriented brand will be washed away, leaving a legacy of hypocrisy and ignorance.

The Richland Health Center is sponsoring Health Fair 2014 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Wednesday in El Paso Hall. Vendors attending include: a Fatal Vision Simulator, the Legacy Adoption Agency, the New Beginning Center for Domestic Violence, Texas Alcohol Beverage Commission, the YWCA – Women’s Services, poison control and free blood pressure screenings.

Also, flu shots will be available at Richland from 1 to 5 p.m. Monday, Oct. 13 and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 14, both days in Sabine Hall, Room 117. No appointment is necessary.

The cost is $18 for Trivalent, which defends against three flu strains. Quadrivalent will be available for $28. Cash or Checks only.

The Health Center is only taking Part B for the flu and pneumonia shots through Medicare. If you have insurance, they are requesting that you bring a copy of your insurance card back and front. For more information call the Health Center at 972-238-6135.
