Jack Kent Cooke award up for grabs KENE ENEMO Staff Writer

The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship is a competitive national scholarship for community college students who intend to complete their bachelor’s degree at a four-year university. The foundation awards scholarships annually with students winning up to $40,000 per year for educational expenses for two to three years.

The scholarship covers tuition, books, living expenses and additional fees.

“It is worth your time even if you’re only named a semifinalist, because then you can tell the school you’re applying to, ‘Hi, I’m a Jack Kent Cooke semifinalist,’ and that really holds a lot of weight because that’s a great accomplishment as well,” said Kathleen Stephens, Ph.D., Richland’s honors program coordinator.

Richland College had four semifinalists in 2017 and a finalist in the spring of 2015. Semifinalists do not receive monetary awards or scholarships, but it increases their chances of admission and makes students more likely to receive additional scholarships.

The scholarship criteria include financial need and a grade point average of 3.5 and above. Joining academic programs such as the honors program, National Society of Collegiate Scholars and Phi Theta Kappa also boost chances of winning. The scholarship also requires students to start classes at their university in the fall semester. There is no age limit. International students are eligible.

The foundation also looks for students with purpose and a plan to positively impact the world around them.

Ayesegul Ates was one of three semifinalists from Richland last semester.

“I was honored to be a semifinalist. I could not believe it when I got the email because it

was a national scholarship and I was a semifinalist. I was also scared because I was a step closer to the prize and there was a chance that I wouldn’t get it. In my case, I didn’t get it but still I feel like it’s one of my greatest accomplishments,” Ates said.

Ates believes the award was beneficial in her transfer to Southern Methodist University (SMU).

“I got calls from many schools including Cornell. They wanted me to apply to their school because they’d heard that I was a semifinalist for JKC. I got a full ride scholarship to SMU and I believe JKC helped me with that as well,” Ates said.

Students are advised to start working on the application ahead of time even though the deadline isn’t until Nov. 27 because it is a lengthy process.

“Generally, they say you have to know your story really well. All of us have stories, but you need to be able to tell what is your story – what are you going to do to change the world because if they’re going to give you all that money you need to have a plan. You need to make a difference,” Stephens said.

According to Stephens, most students do not apply because of factors like not having financial needs or transferring in the spring. If they do meet the requirements it does not hurt to give it a shot.

“If you don’t apply, you don’t know if you’re going to win,” Stephens said. “A lot of people will start the application and never finish it.”

Even if a student does not qualify to be a finalist or semifinalist, it does aid in getting their scholarship résumés, essays and other important documents organized to be sent out to other scholarship applications or schools.

This is a Part 1 of 2-part series The sexual misconduct accusations against then Supreme Court justice nominee Brett Kavanaugh resulted in hundreds of protesters taking to the streets. Women who sided with Dr. Christine Blasey Ford protested in different cities around the country, including at the front door of the U.S. Supreme Court.

Kavanaugh’s accuser was the first of three women who stepped forward to tell their stories of sexual assault that allegedly happened more than 35 years ago. Ford’s testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee was broadcast live on Sept. 27 followed by Kavanaugh’s rebuttal. Kavanaugh denied the allegations.

The Supreme Court nominee was investigated again by the FBI following the new testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee.

In less than a week, nine witnesses were interviewed. The new interviews did not include Ford or Kavanaugh.

The FBI investigation finished and the Senate voted to narrowly confirm Kavanaugh’s nomination as Supreme Court Justice on Oct. 6.

Women’s movements gained strength a year ago when actress Alyssa Milano posted a tweet asking people who had suffered sexual assault to share the hashtag #MeToo. Millions responded with emotional stories and support for the survivors. That caused the hashtag to go viral. Many women stepped up to share their stories and accusations against powerful and famous men. From that moment on,

exposing sexual harassment became a public movement.

One of the biggest cases involved the more than 150 female gymnasts who stepped forward to share their experiences of abuse

by USA gymnastics medical coordinator Dr. Larry Nassar, including Olympic medalists from the U.S. gymnastics team. Nassar was tried and convicted. He was sentenced in January to 40 to 125 years in prison for sexual abuse. More recently, entertainer Bill Cosby was convicted and on Sept. 25 sentenced to three to 10 years in prison for sexual assault.

The #MeToo movement was not the firsttime women have led big movements. The Women’s March hit the streets after Teresa Shook posted on Facebook about women who did not think President Donald Trump represented their views. They marched on Jan. 21, 2017, the day after Trump’s inauguration.

The march happened in Washington, D.C, cities around the U.S. and in more than 25 other countries. The march became about more than not recognizing the president, it became a movement to express demands for women’s rights.

Uma Mishra-Newbery is director of the Women’s March Global Community. She is based in Switzerland. In a video interview, she discussed her belief that women around the world are concerned about their rights.

“More than ever before, women around the world are just done. We are tired and policy makers need to remember that we haven’t gone anywhere and we aren’t going anywhere and we are going to pour out into the streets.”

Mishra-Newbery said the awakening of society is about power and that is beginning to change.

“We see these marches because we see these people waking up and not being OK with the status quo. That’s huge, because normally we would be just go about our days, work our jobs be with our families, accept the things the way they are, and the people in power continue to stay in power,” she said.

The demonstrations are not only happening in the United States. In recent weeks a wave of many demonstrations led by women around the world have flooded the news.

“Around the world women’s rights are under attack,” said Mishra-Newbery. “We are at this space right now where we see that powerful men are reacting and responding by trying to seize even more power.”

Thousands of women in Brazil took to the streets on Sept. 29 to give a voice to their movement, #Elenão (#NotHim). The campaign began in a secret Facebook group called Mulheres Unidas Contra o Bolsonaro (Women United Against Bolsonaro).

Jair Messias Bolsonaro is a controversial candidate running for president of Brazil.

Many think the candidate is a danger for human rights and a risk to democracy for his facism and dictator ideas.

Known by locals as “Brazil’s Trump,” Bolsonaro has made many derogatory comments about women, people of color, the LGBT community and other minorities.

Ana Carolina Rodrigues, sister of the author of this article, was at the march in Santos, in the state of São Paulo, with her friends and their children.

“I went to the protest because I felt the need to be there for my community, for my equals, for the minorities. To show my support against fascism and xenophobia,”

Rodrigues said. “We are not supporting any candidate. We are against one. So, the message we support is that you can choose all the other 10 candidates. Just not him,” India has also joined the #MeToo movement. Bollywood actress Tanushree Dutta filed a formal claim with police on Oct. 7 against Bollywood actor and filmmaker Nana Patekar.

Dutta first mentioned the sexual harassment back in 2008 but no action was taken. Inspired by the #MeToo movement, she decided to bring her story up again in a recent interview on TV with Zoom, an Indian TV entertainment channel.

Women and other Bollywood stars are sharing messages in solidarity with Dutta. A recent poll of women rights experts by the Thomson Reuters Foundation released in June shows that India was considered the most dangerous country for women. The United States is in 10th place.

It’s 2018 and yet the fight for equal rights between women and men is far from over.

Mishra-Newbery said that there isn’t a specific time for people to step forward and say something. Every person has their own time and voice, every person needs to do it when he or she is ready.

“You need to build a movement of people who are passionate and also ready to really push for a change and if you need instead focus on internal rebuilding and care and that’s what you need to do. That in itself is a movement. That is in itself is activism and that in itself is love,” she said.

The Netflix movie “To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before” has not only introduced Hollywood’s latest teenage fantasy star, Noah Centineo, to the world, but has also reminded us why we love our cliché high school romance movies.

This year seems to have been a year of high school movies on Netflix and this movie, along with the well-known “Kissing Booth,” has really given us that taste of youth that we sometimes miss. This movie stars Lana Condor as Lara Jean and Centineo as Peter.

It takes on the journey of a socially awkward teenager (Lara Jean), whose five secret love letters were mysteriously sent to their recipients.

In a bid to clean up this mess, Lara Jean teams up with Peter, one of the letter recipients, to create a facade of them dating so he can make his ex-girlfriend jealous. She then tries to convince her sister’s ex-boyfriend that

“Grey’s Anatomy” (2005) — This dramatic medical show is still successful after 13 years. If you like romance, drama and medical storytelling, take a tissue. Good luck.

“The Good Doctor” (2017) — Shaun Murphy (Freddie Highmore) is a resident surgeon who is also an autistic savant. He has to deal with prejudice and communication difficulties that he needs to overcome to survive the medical challenges of being a doctor.

she’s not in love with him anymore. Don’t try to wrap your head around it, you’ll just get confused.

As soon as these two sign a contract (literally), they are forced to spend more time together so their plan looks real. While all seems to be working, there’s only so far you can run from the truth. That statement goes two ways in this movie. Although their plan seemed to have appeared the way they wanted it to, it might have taken a different turn in a direction neither expected.

I think this movie was good because of the feel-good ending. I mean, after Marvel’s “Infinity War,” I think we all could use a happy ending no matter how cliché. Though this romcom had its perks, I have to say that if the acting had been better, maybe there wouldn’t have been so much awkwardness and discomfort. I think we are all pretty familiar with this script and could predict the ending halfway through. Still, it was enjoyable.

If you’re a chick flick person like me, you’ll probably like it. If you aren’t, try it anyway.

You can thank me later.

“The Resident” (2018) — Another drama with intriguing characters, Conrad Hawkins (Matt Czuchry) is the kind of doctor who is not scared to risk his career to save his patients. Like other shows there’s a complicated romance between Conrad and Nic (Emily VanCamp) to dis- Btract viewers.

“New Amsterdam” (2018) — This new show is already one of my favorites. Dr. Max Goodwin (Ryan Eggold) became the new medical director at a big public hospital. On his first day he makes huge changes and wrecks the old system of how hospitals do medicine.

Tree Award is a living legacy JOYCE JACKSON

Nilsa Rodriguez has worked 20 years at Richland as an accountant in the business office in Thunderduck Hall. As part of Richland’s employee recognition program, employees with 20 years of service get to pick out a tree and get a plaque recognizing their service installed at the foot of it. The plaque has printed in Latin the phrase, “Notatu Dignum,” which means “worthy of note.”

Rodriguez is originally from Puerto Rico.

She came to Dallas in 1996 and registered at Richland as a student in continuing education.

But, she had one problem.

“I didn’t speak any English at all,” Rodriguez said. “I just knew how to say ‘hamburger and hotdog.’ I just didn’t want to be hungry.”

Rodriguez, 53, already had a bachelor’s degree in business administration, but her intent was to get a master’s degree in America.

At first, she thought it was impossible to go to an American university, not knowing any English, and get an advanced degree.

“But then I got a job at Richland and was forced to be around people who spoke English all the time,” she said. A few years later she felt ready to tackle a master’s in English. She enrolled at the University of Phoenix and got the help she needed from professors to get her through the program.

“I made it,” she said. “I finished a degree in organizational leadership.”

“I like numbers and accounting,” Rodriguez said. “In Puerto Rico, I worked for a program of the federal government over there. I was a supervisor for different businesses.”

During her time at Richland, Rodriguez said she was once named employee of the month.

She was also part of a group that helped Hispanic people in the United States.

“Right now, I am part of a new group that tries to help new students adapt to college and

give them support,” she said. Her husband, Hector Reyes, also works at Richland as an adjunct faculty member and teaches GED classes through continuing education.

Rodriguez said she enjoys working at Richland because she shares the values of the college, integrity, honesty and joy. She enjoys working with people and loves the campus environment, especially the lake.

“I believe if you don’t like what you do, why wake up in the morning?” she said. “I enjoy the people. We have wonderful people in this college.”

Since Rodriguez didn’t know anything about trees, she asked fellow accountant Tyrone Hollins to help her select one. She told him

she wanted a tree that she could see every day when she came to work.

Hollins accepted the offer and together the two of them picked a live oak tree. It has been planted near the front door of Thunderduck Hall where she goes to work every morning.

“I got involved with Nilsa because she knew the history of the campus and explained what she was looking for in a tree, which was longevity, growth and the name of the fruit or seed,” Hollins said. “She really valued what I had to say about the flowers and trees.”

Whenever Rodriguez retires, she said she plans to take classes and go to the gym. She said of the endowment, “I think this is a wonderful idea. It’s motivational for people.”

Crunch time for Richland soccer

The soccer playoffs loom as the Thunderducks wind up regular conference play.

Richland faces off against Cedar Valley and Mountain View in the final two conference games. They need to win both games to win the title and advance to the District C tournament. If they fail to win both games, they’ll have to play a regional playoff game to advance.

Head coach Sean Worley said the team is training hard in preparation for the last two games and are focusing on eliminating complacency within the team. He cited their loss in the national final last year as a case study for his team.

“Hopefully the new guys will be motivated.

The complacency last year; those were returning players who won it before, so they thought that they were going to win it again.

We played a team that was more hungrier [sic], that hadn’t won it and so they outworked us and outplayed us that one day.

Hopefully that could happen to us. We have a lot of new guys that haven’t won it, so maybe their intensity, their leadership, their fierceness and their motivation will help us go to the next level,” Worley said.

James Sesay and Lucio Martinez have been at the forefront of Richland’s attack this season. Sesay has scored 18 and assisted eight goals in 12 games while Martinez scored five and assisted five goals in 11 games. Martinez was a part of the championship-winning squad in 2016 while Sesay was part of the team last year. They fell short in the final, loosing 2-1 to Genesee.

Worley hopes the team can continue to develop as the season progresses and ease Martinez and Sesay off the scoring load.

“We are trying to get certain players working well with Lucio and James, new players like Toi [Yamaoka] and Rafael [Dominguez]. Yogi [Reyes Vargas] stepped up and scored a real nice goal. It’s been a little bit slow, but we are hoping that with hard work and some luck it can happen.”

Worley said there is no set team sheet and his starting lineup could change depending on certain factors, alluding to the health of the players and form. He also asserted that a change in players could result in a change in formation; reverting to a 4-4-2 formation from their usual 4-3-3.

“We’ve had some injuries and we’ve had to sit a couple guys. Sometimes we want to play more defensive, sometimes we want to play more attack. Lots of criteria go into that. Now

that Toi is healthy, he is getting a good rhythm and Lucio and Alan [Velasco] are both stepping up. That might be a good combination,” Worley said.

“With our team we have our basic six guys, but we can change our outside guys. For example, if we want more attack we play Sergio,

Again, with James, Lucio [and] Fazio we have a good foundation, but it’s nice to have some flexibility to play whoever is doing well and also to take advantage of [the] other team’s weaknesses,” Worley said.

If Richland wins the conference, they will play the teams that qualify from Region 4, 12 or 13 in the district tournament and then the overall winner will advance to play in the national championship.
