Social Media Editor With a debate stage hosting 10 candidates, it can be hard to give everyone a fair amount of time. In the fifth national democratic debate, MSNBC, the hosting network, managed to do a decent job at keeping most of the candidates involved.

According to the New York Times, Elizabeth Warren spoke well over 13 minutes.

South Bend, Indiana mayor Pete Buttigieg spoke over 12 minutes.

The speaking times for each candidate combined turned out to be about 10 minutes and 40 seconds.

Whether that is enough time to discuss electability, foreign policy, impeachment, criminal justice, women’s issues, health care and climate change, is a valid complaint many have made about these debates.

Some candidates in the most recent debate were asked fewer questions. Andrew Yang, specifically, was asked the fewest questions.

His speaking time clocked at six minutes and 48 seconds.

Yang did not receive his first question until approximately 32 minutes into the debate.

There were 10 candidates on stage, so the delay was reasonable to understand, but it led to outrage among Yang’s followers who are known as the “Yang Gang.”

The fifth debate was just one of many examples of the Yang media blackout.

Yang’s campaign has exceeded expectations in many states and nationally.

He is polling at around 3%, according to the polling consolidator www.FiveThirtyEight. com.

MSNBC released a graphic Nov. 19 of projections for the Iowa 2020 Democratic Caucus. While Yang is polling at 3%, along with Sen. Amy Klobuchar, Sen. Cory Booker and Sen. Harris and Tulsi Gabbard, he was not included.

Not including Yang in the graphic could have been an accident, until you contemplate that Michael Bloomberg and Michael Bennet, who were included in the graphic, are both polling lower than Yang.

Bloomberg entered the presidential race just weeks ago, yet Yang announced his candidacy in 2017.

MSNBC offered an apology to Yang, claiming they inadvertently left him off the graphic.

“Thank you MSNBC for making this apology for the 15th time. The #YangGang is very excited for #16,” said Zach Graumann, Yang’s campaign manager on Twitter.

The YangGang and other protesters demonstrated outside the Tyler Perry Studios in Atlanta, the location of the fifth national debate, in response to the media blackout.

Yang has gone from polling zero percent nationally, to polling at 3%.

“M-S-N-B-C, hands off our democracy” protestors chanted in defense of Yang as reported by Fox News.

Although Yang has been on the campaign train for approximately two years, his name and policies are still largely unheard of.

Once Yang appeared on the Joe Rogan podcast and discussed his universal basic income policy, his numbers skyrocketed.

On Twitter he went from just under 100,000 followers before that interview, to now eclipsing one million followers at press time.

Yang has gone from polling zero percent nationally, to polling at 3%.

Omitting Yang was prevalent in the early runs of the presidential race.

This can either work to the success of the other candidates with Yang being silenced or, as Yang’s campaign manager Graumann showed, that the media blackout is being noticed and will only cause his numbers to continue to grow.

Some spoke about Hester’s interest in genealogy research and the discoveries of her lineage. Others mentioned her camera collection and her passion for photography.

One relative shared a remembrance of sharing Chick-fil-A sandwiches for the first time with her while she was in the hospital.

“Gwen was unstoppable and a force to triumph over every obstacle placed in her way,” Charlette Gorman Fleming, her cousin from Detroit, wrote in the booklet. She said that

Hester was “a queen warrior who put her armor on every single day to fight cancer.”

The event held to honor her life inspired both speakers and guests alike to share uplifting stories about Hester’s life. Many positive words were spoken and charitable comments radiated throughout the room.

Hester was the daughter of Ollie Regina Hester née Calhoun and David Allan Hester.

Rodney Reed was convicted of the rape and murder of 19-year-old Stacey Stites in Bastrop, and served 20 years in a Texas state prison. He was recently granted a 120-day stay of execution just hours after the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals unanimously decided to

take another look at his case.

Reed was sentenced to be executed on Nov. 20. Now the justice system will review his case and consider the evidence. Celebrities, including Beyoncé, Kim Kardashian and Oprah Winfrey, used their platforms to support his case, rallies were held and more than 2 million signatures were gathered for a petition to get a new trial.

of exculpatory evidence. Suspicion was cast by supporters onto the victim’s then-fiancé Jimmy Fennell who was said to be upset that Stites, a white woman, was having an affair with Reed, who was black. Fennell reportedly confided this to another inmate while serving time for sexual assault. He was paroled last year.

The story attracted media coverage locally and around the world. According to The Associated Press (AP), Reed has appeals pending that go all the way to the Supreme Court. He has maintained his innocence from the start.

“This opportunity will allow for proper consideration of the powerful and mounting new evidence of Mr. Reed’s innocence,” said Bryce Benjet, an attorney with the Innocence Project which is representing Reed, in a statement reported by AP. Reeds’ attorneys have filed a lawsuit to compel DNA testing of the crime scene evidence and the murder weapon.

New evidence presented in this case prompted Texas legislators, religious leaders and celebrities to press Gov. Greg Abbott to intervene. He has not yet spoken publicly about the case. In his five years as a governor, Abbott has overseen 50 executions but he has never been under as much pressure to halt one. Rodrick Reed, Rodney’s brother, said, “Only thing I would tell him, honestly, just look at the evidence.”

The sun lay hidden behind a blanket of gray as family, students and colleagues gathered in Brazos Gallery to commemorate the passing of a good friend and loved one.

Hester Gwendolyn LynettemHester was part of the School of Business at Richland. Her passing Nov. 14 was announced via email. The Richland community paid their respects at a memorial service Nov. 22.

Flowers adorned the gallery and a slide presentation chronicled her life and contributions. She battled cancer for nearly 24 years.

Close friends and relatives gathered, including Dr. Peter Irwin, lead faculty in computer science, Dee Hobson, business office systems and support faculty, Darry Groman, cousin, and Dr. Kay Eggleston, Richland president.

All stood before the audience and shared their memories.

“Gwen’s devotion to Richland College and to her many students was incredible,” Hobson wrote a letter included in a pamphlet commemorating the event.

“She worked diligently to see that all her students were successful in the courses she taught. She was always promoting Richland.”

‘Frozen II:’ Let it go Ricky Miller Entertainment Editor

How and why this thing got made comes down to the almighty dollar. “Frozen II” is enjoyable, but it lacks the originality and pizzazz of the original.

Disney wants to hold onto its possessions, but at some point they will just have to make do with what they are given. This flick manages to strike the right chords, since I did get goosebumps at least once during the various song and dance numbers.

It was, however, a bit hokey and superficial in spots, and felt too staged in others. There is an entire sequence that reeks of an old-time 1980s music video. One feels the cheese and just rolls the eyes. I’m surprised this became part of a theatrical feature film.

“Frozen II” essentially has the same voices of the original. They include Kristen Bell’s Anna, Idina Menzel’s Elsa, Josh Gad’s Olaf, Hans (voiced by Santino Fontana) and his trusty steed Duke (Alan Tudyk).

The storyline deals with Anna who has run away from home again. She is trying to figure out her place in the kingdom in which she

resides. It is a flourishing town, but somewhere in the past some unsavory events occurred.

The problem with “Frozen II” is that it feels like it only wants to exist to sell merchandise and the like. I had fun, but at some point, it just felt forced. The film feels like a sitcom that has run too many seasons.

Returning for directing chores on “Frozen II” are Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee. Buck helmed 2013’s “Frozen” as well as 1999’s “Tarzan” and 2007’s “Surf ’s Up.” With “Frozen II,” they delve into some deeper parts of the storyline. The past comes back around and offers life lessons that are important for that easygoing feeling.

Lee also directed the “Frozen” short “Frozen Fever” in 2015. It ran before Kenneth Branagh’s “Cinderella” update that same year.

I enjoyed that one because there were not a plethora of song and dance numbers throughout.

I would recommend “Frozen II,” despite the forced aspects of the storyline. It does what it’s supposed to do in that it reintroduces characters the entire family can love.

“Frozen” (2013) – This enchanting tale won an Oscar for Best Animated Feature as well as Best Original Song.

The story deals with a pair of estranged sisters who reunite after a series of unfortunate events.

‘Ford v Ferrari’ shifts into fifth gear Jack Ramirez Bernal Managing Editor

Much has been written about the famous rivalry between Henry Ford II and Enzo Ferrari back in the 1960s. Director James Mangold (“Logan”), in his latest release, “Ford v Ferrari,” takes a different and effective approach to this classic tale.

The film is based on the struggles the Ford Motor Company faced when developing the famous Ford GT40 to compete, with the intent of defeating their Italian rivals at Le Mans.

Mangold’s focus was not the feud between the two companies, but the relationship between automotive designer Carroll Shelby (Matt Damon) and race car driver Ken Miles (Christian Bale). The two men helped build the legendary GT40 for the Le Mans 24-hour race in 1966.

The focus of the film is the dynamic relationship between Shelby and Miles as portrayed by Damon and Bale. Whether it’s a scene in which the characters are in complete disagreement or sharing their passion for cars and racing, audiences will easily relate to the struggles the men faced, including corporate interference and development issues.

Despite the film revolving around an underdog plot, at its core this is a racing film. When it comes to the actual races, Mangold directs with a style delivering a blistering amount of excitement and tension.

The way the camera captures the driver’s emotional response in every race shows the audience the danger encountered behind the wheel. The accompanying sounds of every gear change, every tire squeal and the revving noise emanating from the engines adds

“The Black Hole” (1979) – This interesting and strange concoction was Disney’s answer to the “Star Wars” phenomenon that began in 1977. It has a big-name cast that includes Ernest Borgnine, Robert Forster and Maximillian Schell.

The ending was bewildering.

“The Iron Giant” (1999) – Vin Diesel provides the voice of a military robot experiment gone wrong and wants to be a good guy in this amazing tale directed by Brad Bird. It is voiced by Jennifer Aniston, Harry Connick Jr., Cloris Leachmen and others.

a deeper layer of immersion for the audience.

It is clear that Mangold and everyone involved in the film clearly understood the source material. This is evident in the depiction of 1960’s Americana, through the mannerisms of the characters, the replication of the cars and the racetracks in each scene.

Small liberties were taken for the sake of narrative but that is not reason enough to pan the film.

There is, however, one drawback that I can’t ignore. The slow pace of the film in the beginning is a bit boring as characters are being introduced and the plot evolves. It is only later, about half-way through the film, that the focus shifts to the actual development of the GT40 the film picks up the pace.

The movie in general is solid and very memorable. The cinematography, especially during race scenes, is creative and concise. The visual effects help sell the setting and enhance the action, and the cast performances are admirable.

Bale and Damon’s performances are commendable. The supporting cast, including Jon Bernthal (“The Walking Dead”), Caitriona Balfe (“Outlander”), Tracy Letts (“Lady Bird”) and Josh Lucas (“Sweet Home Alabama”), also deliver strong performances.

In an age where the cinema listings are dominated by reboots, sequels and franchises, “Ford v Ferrari” is a fresh breath of originality that combines a throwback to the traditional style of movie-making with a modern look.

Whether you’re a car enthusiast or just a move buff, this flick is worth the price of admission.

Grade: A-

“Babe” (1995) – This fun tale with a talking pig was an Oscar-winner for visual effects. It stars Oscarnominee James Cromwell as Father Hoggett.

“The Neverending Story” (1984) – This jovial yet somewhat creepy film came from director Wolfgang Petersen.

Barret Oliver stars in this imaginative tale that deals with a lucky dragon named Falkor and other creatures including rockbiter and a snail.

Damon Craig Online/Special Projects It’s that time of the year again, ladies and gentlemen; time for a holiday season filled with family, friends and, most of all, food.

With Thanksgiving under our belts and more holidays to come, families already are pondering the age-old question: What about the leftovers?

Sure, many people send second meals home with their guests, but eventually the fridge will be rife with the remnants that, while still tasty, may get a bit repetitive. Chef Richard Conrad Gomez III (aka Chef Riko) has some creative, tasty ways to revamp those leftovers into delicious turkey salad sandwiches.

The beauty of Gomez’s recipe is that it uses whatever is readily available. Ingredients may differ from the recipe provided.

“A typical turkey sandwich for me is turkey, cranberries, nuts, a little mayo and, really, whatever your heart desires,” Gomez said. “It’s really whatever you have on hand.

I think for this one, I added a little honey mustard and red onion, which I prefer to yellow onions, honestly. Plus, they’re what I had in the fridge.”

When asked about the process of making this dish, he recommended letting it sit for at least 2 1/2 hours.

“The longer it sits, the more time the flavors will have to come together,” he said.

The dish is simple to put together. Gomez recommends serving it on a croissant, but the versatility of this dish is where it really shines.

“It can go on anything, really. It could go on a regular slice of bread. Spread it on crackers if you prefer,” he said.

Gomez said putting turkey salad on a torilla is another tasty option.

Chef Riko’s Turkey Salad Sandwich Serves 6-8 Ingredients: Turkey—chopped (approx 3.5 lbs.) ½ cup red onion—minced ½ cup carrots—chopped ½ cup celery—chopped ½ cup Granny Smith Apple—diced ½ cup Pear—diced ½ - 1 cup Red Grapes—Halved ¾ cup dried cranberries Green olives—minced 1 tsp basil 2 tblsp olive oil ½ cup mayo ¼ teaspoon salt (or to taste) ¼ teaspoon pepper (or to taste) ¼ teaspoon celery seed Croissants (or crackers or bread of choice)

Note: This basic recipe is intended to use with holiday leftovers and can be modified to suit any particular tastes or available ingredients. Red onions, which have a stronger flavor, can be substituted with yellow onion for a milder taste. Olives and various fruits can be added to taste.

Preparation: Chop turkey making sure to remove any bones. Add onion, carrots, celery, olives and fruit. Apples, pears, grapes and cranberries are good complements.

Add olive oil and mayo and mix well. Add in your spices and mix again, making sure they are thoroughly combined. Refrigerate from two hours to overnight for best flavor.

Serve onto croissant rolls, crackers, bread or even a bed of lettuce.

The Richland Thunderducks’ men’s basketball team has a record of 10-1 after beating Texas Wesleyan 94-62. On Nov. 25, the Thunderducks dominated over the Rams.

They came with a usual starting line-up of five sophomores, Javon Modester, Cameron Jones, Rashad Perkins, Jabrel Trammell and Francis Doe. They kicked into gear as the Thunderducks moved aggressively on the boards and under the rim. The T-Ducks shot with a field goal percentage of 50% from the field and 32% from the 3-point range.

Ashley Mukeni turned in a dominant performance with 7 rebounds, 9 points and 2 steals.

“Transferring from Navarro college, I feel like this is going to be one of my seasons.

Since joining Richland, the coach has been very attentive with me. He gives advice on how aggressive I should be when playing. Our team is well bonded, and there is a chance of us going to nationals if we continue like that,” Mukeni said.

The Thunderducks hope to keep the winning streak going when they play Hill College on Dec. 3.
