Dr. Lonon becomes the next chancellor Alex Ortuno

Dallas College Chancellor Joe May will retire from his position March 1 , according to Alex Lyda, senior director of communication for Dallas College. Doctor Justin Lonon, who has been serving as the executive vice chancellor, is expected to assume the duties of chancellor on that date.

According to the agenda of a Feb. 1 regular meeting of the Dallas College board of trustees on Feb. 1, a resolution was set where Lonon would be appointed as the future chancellor of Dallas College during the transitional period as May relinquishes his day-to-day duties and responsibilities.

During the transitional period, Lonon will assume the duties of chancellor while May will become chancellor emeritus by June 11, according to Lyda. The board meeting agenda said the transitional period will be from March 1 - Aug. 31.

As May stepped down from his position as chancellor, he reflected on his time serving higher education and Dallas College as a great journey.

“It kind of completed for me my professional journey in higher education and it’s been a great journey. With being the head of the [Louisiana Community and Technical College System], the [Colorado Community College System], president of Pueblo Community College and others but by far, this is the highlight of my career,” May said.

While the transition of the seven colleges into one may be a big achievement, May does not consider everything he has done to be about achievements as he tried to solve problems that Dallas College had.

“To be honest, I don’t really think about it in terms of achievement or things of that nature. I think of it in terms of solving the problems that were out there. Lots of people were talking about the consolidation of the seven colleges and certainly it was a big move

and it took a lot of effort and energy. But it’s no less important than the work we did creating career pathways for students, putting in place something that’s almost invisible to students but very important and that’s the work we do with our labor market intelligence center to make sure our programs are aligned with the economy,” May said.

May also mentioned the importance of trying to have students leave without any debt.

While May was involved in the transition to Dallas College, he believes it was largely a success, despite uncertainties in the future, which cannot always be predicted.

“I absolutely do consider it a success and anyone looking at it from the outside in has marveled at the fact that we’ve been able to make this type of change relatively smoothly.

I can point you [to other places] in the country that are underway or attempted this.

And for a whole lot of other reasons, a lot of good reasons, it just hasn’t gone as fast or as smoothly as we have here. That being said, that doesn’t mean that we’re able to forecast everything that would happen and how it might impact every single individual and things could have been done better. Of course they can,” May said.

Even though Dallas College may have many benefits and support for students and employees, May said there is still more to be done to fully improve.

“Even though I would consider this a success, I would also say there’s still a lot of work to be done to improve services, access, opportunities and, most importantly, improve our graduation and completion rate,” May said.

“The goal has to be what can we continue to do as an institution to ensure, we’ll probably never hit 100% but how can we get as close as 100% as we can of every single individual being able to achieve his or her goal. That has to be, I think, the guiding principle by which Dallas College operates and does that mean 50 years from now, will we be there? Probably not but, hopefully, whoever’s leading the institution in 50 years will still have that guiding principle that says we’ve got to continue to work toward that goal,” May said.

While he has no regrets on the transition of Dallas College, May said he wished he had understood the issues students were dealing with much earlier.

“I probably wish I understood some of the challenges students were facing sooner. I came to Dallas College in 2014. I didn’t fully grasp how this was getting in the way until June 2019. Now, that’s a long time to be in this role and to have a set of problems that was getting in the way of students getting their degree. I guess if I had one regret, I didn’t have that clarity around how this was interfering and got started on this earlier because clearly, it had been going on for some time,” May said.

While Lonon is humbled to be the next chancellor for Dallas College, he wants to continue the mission of Dallas College helping its community.

“It is a tremendous honor to serve as the eighth chancellor of this amazing institution that since 1965 made such an impact in this community and it’s also home for me. I’ve been here over 16 years now. I’m passionate about what we provide for our students. I’m passionate for supporting our students and serving our community and our business partners that depend on us to help provide a workforce,” Lonon said.

Lonon knows Dallas College faces challenges that impact its students and employees but he said he will make efforts to ensure better communication of more information.

“We know that there are still gaps we need to focus on. We did listening tours in the fall and another virtual one that occurred a couple of weeks ago to hear from employees to hear where they saw the gaps that may exist through the transition. I want to ensure that we have an opportunity for feedback,” Lonon said.

Lonon added that communication with both students and employees will have opportunities for feedback and have moments of engagement with representatives of students.

“We had these series of listening tours that we did internally. We will continue our town hall meetings that we have done and get feedback where we can. I’ll be active on campus, both informal and in formal sort of ways for those sit-ins. I’ve done small group conversations at each of the locations and I want to look for opportunities to meet with student groups on a frequent basis,” Lonon said.

Lonon also wants meetings with student government representatives and student media members once per semester.

In the case of employees, Lonon wants to ensure as much support as they need to serve the campus community and students.

“Our chief human resources officer has shared with the board some things that we’ll be doing around professional development and training opportunities to ensure employees can be successful and for new onboarding for new employees,” Lonon said.

Lonon also mentioned that while chancellor, the culture of Dallas College will be something he will focus on but it will take time, as Dallas College is still relatively new.

During the transition of Lonon to chancellor and May to chancellor emeritus, Lonon will have an executive team and support from other networks across the state and the nation for advice.

Lonon expressed hope for seeing change within the first year of his new role but noted that change does not always come quickly.

“Change comes at many different speeds and so as I’ve talked about the barrier busting business being very intentional in identifying some of those barriers, I can tell you again that some of those that I know are issues for many of our students that we’re going to focus on heavily would include childcare. We just recently announced a partnership with the Bezos Academy that is going to be at Cedar Valley and Mountain View,” Lonon said.

healthcare has been a challenging issue for many, especially during the pandemic.

Lonon said existing facilities across Dallas College may see enhancements and expand new facilities as well. This would also come with the construction of a new downtown campus to replace the current El Centro Campus.

Pushing for academic innovation at Dallas College is something Lonon wants to do as well.

“We have such amazing faculty that I want to leverage that expertise and even new innovative ways that may cause us to think through [these times],” Lonon said.

One big change for students is the eventual possibility of programs going fully online.

“Students may be able to pick up classes and some shorter term courses certainly and then also around academic innovation is also our expansion of online and I don’t mean just online courses. I mean developing complete online programs so individuals can take those online programs and not just a collection of online courses. That’s another big thing that we’re working on next year,” Lonon said.

Lonon said he is excited to be the next chancellor, thanking faculty, staff and students.

“I’m excited with amazing staff, amazing faculty and the focus that we have on serving our students. You guys are why we all do this work and so I’m excited to be doing it and to see what’s ahead.”

Kyiv under threat as Russia invades Ukraine

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said. “When missiles kill our people, they kill all Europeans.”

A U.S. defense official said a Russian amphibious assault was underway, and thousands of Russian naval infantry were moving ashore from the Sea of Azov, west of Mariupol. The official said Ukrainian air defenses have been degraded but are still operating, and that about a third of the combat power that Russia had massed around Ukraine is now in the country.

Zelenskyy pleaded with Western powers to act faster to cut off Russia’s economy and provide Ukraine military help. His whereabouts were kept secret, after he told European leaders in a call on [Feb. 24] night that he was Russia’s No. 1 target — and that they might not see him again alive.

He also offered to negotiate on one of Putin’s key demands: that Ukraine declare itself neutral and abandon its ambition of joining NATO. The Kremlin responded that Russia was ready to send a delegation to Belarus to discuss that. But Putin’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov later said Ukrainian officials were unwilling to travel to the Belarusian capital and would prefer Warsaw, then halted further communication.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov suggested it was too late, saying Zelenskyy should have agreed to talks earlier on.

After denying for weeks he planned to invade, Putin argued that the West left him no other choice by refusing to negotiate on Russia’s security demands.

In a window into how the increasingly isolated Putin views Ukraine and its leadership, he gave a strongly worded statement urging the Ukrainian military to surrender, saying: “We would find it easier to agree with you than with that gang of drug addicts and neo-Nazis who have holed up in Kyiv and have taken the entire Ukrainian people hostage.”

Playing on Russian nostalgia for World War II heroism, the Kremlin equates members of Ukrainian right-wing groups with neo-Nazis.

Zelenskyy, who is Jewish, angrily dismisses those claims.

The autocratic leader hasn’t disclosed his ultimate plans for Ukraine. Lavrov gave a hint, saying: “We want to allow the Ukrainian people to determine its own fate.” Peskov said Russia recognizes Zelenskyy as the president, but wouldn’t say how long the Russian military operation could last.

Ukrainians, meanwhile, abruptly adjusted to life under fire, after Russian forces started moving in to their country from three sides in an invasion telegraphed for weeks, as they massed an estimated 150,000 troops nearby.

Residents of a Kyiv apartment building woke to screaming, smoke and flying dust.

What the mayor identified as Russian shelling tore off part of the building and ignited a fire.

“What are you doing? What is this?” resident Yurii Zhyhanov asked — a question directed at Russian forces. Like countless other Ukrainians, he grabbed what belongings he could, took his mother, and fled, car alarms wailing behind him.

Elsewhere in Kyiv, the body of a dead soldier lay near an underpass. Fragments of a downed aircraft smoked amid the brick homes of a residential area.

Black plastic was draped over body parts found beside them. And people climbed out of bomb shelters, basements and subways to face another day of upheaval.

“We’re all scared and worried. We don’t know what to do then, what’s going to happen in a few days,” said one of the workers, Lucy Vashaka, 20.

AP reporters saw signs of significant fighting near Ivankiv, about 60 kilometers (40 miles) northwest of Kyiv.

Russian troops also entered the city of Sumy, near the border with Russia that sits on a highway leading to Kyiv from the east. A Russian missile launcher was seen on the outskirts of Kharkiv in the east.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Kyiv “could well be under siege” in what U.S. officials believe is a brazen attempt by Putin to install his own regime.

The assault, anticipated for weeks by the U.S. and Western allies, amounts to the largest ground war in Europe since World War II. Zelenskyy, whose grasp on power was increasingly tenuous, appealed to global leaders for even more severe sanctions than the ones imposed by Western allies and for defense assistance.

Zelenskyy cut diplomatic ties with Moscow, declared martial law and ordered a full military mobilization that would last 90 days.

The invasion began early Thursday with missile strikes on cities and military bases, followed by a multipronged ground assault that rolled troops in from separatist-held areas in the east; from the southern region of Crimea, which Russia annexed in 2014; and from Belarus to the north.

After Ukrainian officials said they lost control of the decommissioned Chernobyl nuclear power plant, scene of the world’s worst nuclear disaster, Russia said on Feb. 25 it was working with the Ukrainians to secure the plant. There was no corroboration of such cooperation from the Ukrainian side.

U.S. President Joe Biden announced new sanctions that will target Russian banks, oligarchs, state-controlled companies and high-tech sectors, saying Putin “chose this war.”

He said the measures were designed not to disrupt global energy markets. Russian oil and natural gas exports are vital energy sources for Europe.

The European Union neared an agreement to slap asset freezes on Putin and Lavrov themselves, in addition to other sanctions.

Britain is freezing the assets of all large Russian banks and planning to bar Russian companies and the Kremlin from raising money on British markets.

“Now we see him for what he is — a bloodstained aggressor who believes in imperial conquest,” Prime Minister Boris Johnson said of Putin.

Russian troops bore down on Ukraine’s capital on Feb. 25, with gunfire and explosions resonating ever closer to the government quarter, in an invasion of a democratic country that has fueled fears of wider war in Europe and triggered worldwide efforts to make Russia stop.

With reports of hundreds of casualties from the warfare — including shelling that sliced through a Kyiv apartment building and pummeled bridges and schools — there also were growing signs that Vladimir Putin’s Russia may be seeking to overthrow Ukraine’s government.

It would be his boldest effort yet to redraw the world map and revive Moscow’s Cold War-era influence.

In the fog of war, it was unclear how much of Ukraine remains under Ukrainian control and how much or little Russian forces have seized.

The Kremlin accepted Kyiv’s offer to hold talks, but it appeared to be an effort to squeeze concessions out of Ukraine’s embattled president instead of a gesture toward a diplomatic solution.

The U.S. and other global powers slapped ever-tougher sanctions on Russia as the invasion reverberated through the world’s economy and energy supplies, threatening to further hit ordinary households.

U.N. officials said millions could flee Ukraine. Sports leagues moved to punish Russia on global playing fields. And U.S. President Joe Biden and other NATO leaders held an urgent meeting to discuss how far they can challenge Putin without engaging Russian forces in direct war.

Day 2 of Russia’s invasion focused on the Ukrainian capital, where Associated Press reporters heard explosions starting before dawn and gunfire was reported in several areas.

Russia’s military said it had seized a strategic airport outside Kyiv, allowing it to quickly build up forces to take the capital.

It claimed to have already cut the city off from the west — the direction taken by many of those escaping the invasion, leading to lines of cars snaking toward the Polish border.

Intense gunfire broke out on a bridge across the Dneiper River dividing eastern and western Kyiv, with about 200 Ukrainian forces taking defensive positions and sheltering behind their armored vehicles and under the bridge. Another key bridge leading to the capital was blown away, with smoke rising from it.

Ukrainian officials reported at least 137 deaths on their side and claimed hundreds on the Russian one.

Russian authorities released no casualty figures, and it was not possible to verify the tolls.

U.N. officials reported 25 civilian deaths, mostly from shelling and airstrikes, and said that 100,000 people were believed to have left their homes, estimating up to 4 million could flee if the fighting escalates.

Wholesome time-waster Ricky Miller

Entertainment Editor “Dog” is not necessarily a great movie, but it is enjoyable to watch nonetheless.

In this real-life comedy-drama, Channing Tatum (“G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra,” “White House Down”) is assigned a duty to transport his old friend’s canine war companion, Lulu, to his buddy’s funeral down the Pacific Coast.

Like the countless dog tales from the past, “K-9,” two incarnations of “Turner & Hooch” and a couple of “Top Dog” adventures come to mind, “Dog” adds little to the win column in making this a must-see for viewers. Instead, it is just an easy watch since it does not contain anything too grotesque or incentive for all ages. I know why this one received a PG-13 rating.

“Dog” is not a bad or bland movie, just one without a point or purpose. Sure, the pair get into their fair share of shenanigans and predicaments along the way. In the end game of things, I was left with a blasé feeling of so what?

I think a lot of people and the general public forget Tatum was in an Oscar-nominated movie a few years back. The movie was “Foxcatcher,” with an almost unrecognizable

Steve Carell as John du Pont, who coached amateur wrestlers. Carell drew an Academy Award nomination, as did Mark Ruffalo, who played Tatum’s brother.

The co-directors of “Dog” are Reid Carolin and Tatum, who are both making their directing debuts. The pair have known each other for years, with Carolin receiving an associate producer credit on “Stop-Loss” (2008), a war drama that featured Tatum in a major role. Since that time on “Stop-Loss,” Carolin has been around Tatum’s career in some form or fashion.

Tatum’s Briggs persona is an easy watch, since Tatum does not merely go through the motions, but also adds depth and layers to his character’s battle with PTSD. Kevin Nash makes an appearance as Gus, who has access to Lulu’s war companion.

Like former professional wrestlers Dwayne Johnson, Jon Cena and Hulk Hogan, Nash is trying to segue in the movie business. He’s off to great success since he has been juggling his movie career with the wrestling business as well.

“Dog” is a worthwhile time-waster, but don’t expect any Shakespeare inspired depth while watching this pleasant enough flick.

‘Uncharted’ a succesful video game adaptation Ricky Miller

Entertainment Editor I have said in the past that movies based on a video game do not translate well to the big screen. That was apparent specifically in the 1990s where countless duds took a huge belly--flop such as “Street Fighter,” “Double Dragon” and “Super Mario Bros.” They all failed to generate enough box-office revenue to warrant sequels.

The only one that did business was Paul W.S. Anderson’s “Mortal Kombat” in 1995.

It did OK, since it spawned a sequel that was even less inspired in the business that creates sequels.

Flash forward to the new age of creating surefire success stories with “Uncharted,” wherein Tom Holland teams up with Mark Wahlberg for a ride down the treasure hunt path that is just a fun and easy jaunt.

“Uncharted,” for those who don’t know, is based on a game as well.Think of either Steven Spielberg’s “Raiders of the Lost Ark” or “Romancing the Stone” where the endgame is that almighty object of power or significance.

For me, however, it goes back to the Steven Spielberg-directed “The Adventures of Tintin” in 2011. It was animated, so the storyline could capture a lot of the elements

“Meatballs” (1979) - Directed by Ivan Reitman, this one starred a younger Bill Murray fresh from his stint on TV’s “Saturday Night Live.” Rudy (Chris Makepeace) is a kid dealing with predicaments and problems at a summer camp. I watched this again recently and it does not hold up too well.

“Ghostbusters” (1984) Murray, Ramis, Sigourney Weaver and Dan Aykroyd star in this enjoyable comedy directed by Reitman that still holds up in today’s social mores and standards.

It inspired laughs and the catchphrase “Who ya’ gonna call?”

that would be lost if it was done on a smaller scale. So readers know, it was also produced by Peter Jackson and it was a worldwide commercial success.

“Uncharted” opened No. 1 at the U.S. box office the weekend of Feb. 18-20, thus ensuring the filmmakers that a sequel idea will not be lost in the shuffle.

“Uncharted” was helmed by Ruben Fleischer, who directed “Zombieland: Double Tap” in 2019. With “Uncharted,” he knows where every step the story is going to take along the way.

Holland and Wahlberg share an impressive onscreen chemistry. They trust each other, but each is afraid they will be betrayed by the other at some point in time.

Also significant to the plot is Antonio Banderas’s Santiago Moncada. His character plays into the story early on, but in a movie filled with twists and double-crosses galore, one does not really know where he ends up.

Fleischer does shoot for the big screen and it shows in his camera set ups and displays. He captures the landscapes and vistas within the framework.

“Uncharted” does what it’s supposed to do with all the shenanigans that occur. I did not hate it or dislike it at all. It will get a second viewing from me at some point.

Grade: C+

“Kindergarten Cop” (1990) - Arnold Schwarzenegger takes on the role of a cop posing as a kindergarten teacher who does not have a tumor. in this action crime-comedy directed by Reitman. With Penelope Ann Miller, Pamela Reed and Richard Tyson.

“Draft Day” (2014) - Reitman gets serious in this sports drama. Kevin Costner is general manager of the Cleveland Browns of the NFL with some tough choices to make. With Jennifer Garner, Ellen Burstyn, Denis Leary and Frank Langella.

Growing loan debt threatens students’ future Staff Writer

“Combined, student debt in the U.S is the size of Canada’s economy” wrote Josh Mitchell in his book “The Debt Trap: How Student Loans Became a National Catastrophe.

Dallas College hosted a virtual town hall on Feb. 22 to discuss the student debt crisis with Mitchell, author and economic reporter from The Wall Street Journal.

The meeting began with a welcome from Dallas College Chancellor-elect Justin Lonon.

“Today is an opportunity to have an open dialogue and share with you some affordable options to quality education that we provide here at Dallas College,” Lonon said.

Lonon passed the floor to Joe May, current chancellor of Dallas College. May felt like the student debt crisis would be topic important to discuss.

After May spoke, he passed the floor to Mitchell to talk more about his book and the inspiration behind it. Mitchell said he was determined to talk to as many people as he could when he began to write this book. “I talked to the 90-year-old congressional clerk who wrote the first student loan program in 1957, I talked to every CEO of Sallie Mae, I talked to hundreds of students and I talked to school presidents,” Mitchell said. “I spent three years writing the book, but I spent a decade covering this and it’s the culmination of that and I just wanted to put out into the

world what I learned.”

May said Mitchell’s book inspired him to host the town hall. “After reading Josh’s book it was even more important that we find a way to get people in college debt free,” May said. “I was really concerned for the individuals who graduated high school but who were raised in families who really believed that college was unattainable.”

Mitchell described the student debt crisis as a catastrophe when asked about how he ranks it in the economic issues of American families.

Mitchell also said he gets asked many times when the crisis will actually begin, but in his words, “The crisis is already here.”

Another guest speaker at the town hall was Katrina James, managing director of the Dallas County Promise. “We are a part of the commit partnership, which is an organization in Dallas, who is committed to everyone being able to access a live able wage regardless of race, place, or socioeconomic status,” James said. “Our coalition is about helping people access post-secondary options that leads to those careers.”

“The Dallas County Promise is a program that works to reduce financial and other kinds of barriers to support students in their path to a rewarding career,” Lonon said.

May also had many great things to say about the Dallas County Promise and their goals.

“The Dallas County promise is about creating a pathway for individuals to get a high-quality education and leave debt free,”

Lonon said. “That means also other support because there is more to go into college than tuition fees and books.”

“I thank all of you so much and really appreciate your time today on this important topic,” May said.

T-Ducks baseball team defeats Mountain View Cade Harris Staff Writer

The Richland baseball team combined strong pitching and timely offense to take their conference opener 3-2 at home against Mountain View on Feb. 21.

The pitching from both sides shined in this one as fans were treated to a classic pitcher’s duel. The game did not start like that, though.

Mountain View got out to a quick start scoring in the first inning.

Richland responded in the bottom of the second inning putting up a pair of runs to go out in front. Mountain View added another run in the fourth to tie the game up.

It remained tied until Richland scored the decisive run in the bottom of the seventh.

T.J. Pound led the T-Ducks offensively going 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.

Kole Mayberry went 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Brad Mican also had a nice day at the plate going 2-for-4.

Richland totaled three runs on 10 hits, striking out seven times.

Michael Gresham got the start on the mound for the T-Ducks throwing seven innings, giving up two runs on five hits, while also striking out seven and earning the win.

Andrew Kuni came on in relief throwing an

inning and a third giving up no runs on only one hit and striking out three. Sam Tolin pitched two-thirds of an inning allowing no runs on no hits and earning the save.

The Richland pitching staff allowed two runs on six hits, striking out 10 Mountain View batters. The T-Ducks did not allow one walk for the entire game. Richland committed only one error in the field.

For Mountain View offensively, Keaton King went 1-for-2 with a solo home run.

Chase Rozell went 1-for-4 on the day with an RBI. Renard Smith and Aaron Prince each went 1-for-4 on the day.

Mountain View totaled two runs on six hits for the day.

Jorge Guerra got the start on the mound for Mountain View, throwing five innings giving up two runs, none earned, on seven hits while striking out two. Brody Wilson came on in relief throwing three innings and allowing one run on three hits, striking out five and being charged with the loss.

Mountain View’s pitching staff only gave up one earned run on 10 hits, striking out seven Richland batters. Mountain View committed three errors in the field.

responded from giving up an early run by pitching an immaculate top of the second inning.

Richland also put a pair of runs on the board in the bottom of the second, inning on a Pound RBI triple to right-center. He scored on a bad throw by the outfielder trying to get him out at third. King tied the game on one swing of the bat in the top of the fourth, hitting a solo home run to right field.

From then on out it would be an exciting pitchers’ duel. Richland scored the go-ahead and eventually decisive run in the bottom of the seventh on a sacrifice fly from Mayberry.

Kuni came out to pitch the ninth inning, needing only three outs to secure the victory.

Kuni was pulled after getting the first out and allowing a runner to reach on an error.

Tolin entered the game and immediately picked the runner off at first then got a Mountain View hitter to ground out and end the game.

Richland improved to 9-5 on the season and 1-0 in conference play. Mountain View fell to 5-5 on the season and 0-1 in conference play.

At press time, Richland was scheduled to continue their conference campaign on March 2 taking on Cedar Valley at home before playing away games at Cedar Valley March 5 and March 6.

Food pantry gives resources Grey Schessler Staff Writer Richland Campus recently expanded its food pantry to combat other issues besides food insecurity.

With collaboration from other campuses, the food pantry has expanded to include toiletries, baby food, diapers and clothing.

Office of Student Life coordinator Kelly Sonnanstine said she believes the food pantry will be able to help people as much as it can.

“We want to be able to provide baby formula or hygiene items if somebody needs them and those kinds things as well,” Sonnanstine said .

Food pantry worker Namirah Fyrooz elaborated on the new additions to the food pantry.

“This [addition is] actually new. I think it started sometime during winter break so it’s natural that most people don’t know about [this],“ Fyrooz said.

Nonfood items have also been added and will be offered in the food pantry.

“We also offer shampoo or body wash, all that stuff because there are people that can’t really afford sanitary products, especially diapers and pads,” Fyooz said.

Fyooz went on to describe how the clothing system works in the pantry.

As of press time, only formal clothing is available to the public and each person is limited to three items at a time for interviews or formal events.

Casual clothing was not available in the pantry due to a lack of donations. However, they are accepting donations of toiletries, clothing and food.

For more information about the food pantry, contact the Office of Student Life in El Paso Hall, room E040, or the food pantry in E030. The food pantry is open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.

While cities across the nation may celebrate Mardi Gras using big floats with food, song and dance all around, Richland Campus will host its celebration in the Student Lounge on March 1 in El Paso Hall from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

As Mardi Gras is celebrated around the world in a variety of ways, the celebration goes way back to ancient Rome, according to History, the television network.

Dara Eason, student engagement coordinator for Richland Campus, said students can participate in the celebration in a variety of ways.

“We will have supplies for students to make a Mardi Gras mask. Mocktail slushees will be available. We will have a backdrop and décor set up to take photos in the tradition green, purple and gold colors. We will have music, games and giveaways, including Mardi Gras beads,” Eason said.

There will be games for students to get involved in such as giant Jenga, said Eason.

Other campus groups, clubs and organizations will also participate in the celebration.

The event is free.

The Olympics have said goodbye to Asia after a star-crossed run, and it’s unclear when they’ll be back after the continent hosted four of the last eight Games.

The earliest the Summer Games could return is 2036, and the favorite could be the world’s most populous country — not China, as you might expect, but India.

India’s population is expected to overtake China’s 1.4 billion in the next decade, and it is lobbying for the western city of Ahmedabad to be the host city for 2036, with events elsewhere, including New Delhi, the capital.

“India is in a race for hosting 2036,” Narinder Batra, president of the Indian Olympic Committee, told The Associated Press. He offered few other details.

In a show of support, the IOC has scheduled the annual meeting of its full membership for next year in the western Indian metropolis of Mumbai. It’s a signal the courting has begun.

Delivering the pitch: Indian IOC member Nita Ambani, who is married to Mukesh Ambani, the chairman of India’s multinational conglomerate Reliance Industries. The family fortune has been estimated at $100 billion.

As it did with China, the IOC can envision India as a new frontier that will yield deeppocketed sponsors, television rights deals and generous government support.

Departing Asia means returning to familiar terrain: the Summer Games in Paris in 2024, the 2026 Winter Games in Milan-Cortina, and the 2028 Summer Games in Los Angeles.

Brisbane is also lined up for the 2032 Summer Olympics, a return to Australia 32 years after Sydney.

Brisbane is certain to add cricket to its sports menu and, of course, it would stay in place for India, where the sport has the world’s most fervent following.

The Asia focus started with the 2008 Beijing Olympics, a grand coming-out party that many hoped would change China.

Instead, China used the Games to change how it was viewed.

The Asia run enriched the IOC with lucrative billion-dollar sponsorship deals with China’s Alibaba and Japan’s Toyota, put down roots in the world’s most populous continent and featured a return to South Korea 30 years after the 1988 Seoul Olympics were credited with helping to usher in democracy.

Asia has also generated consistently bad public relations for the IOC. This includes a state-sponsored doping scandal from the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics that lingers and surfaced again with allegations in Beijing against Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva.

There was IOC vote-buying linked to the award of the Tokyo Olympics, which forced the resignation of the head of Japan’s Olympic Committee, Tsunekazu Takeda, and a diplomatic boycott of the just-finished Beijing Games centered on human rights abuses that also dogged Beijing in 2008.

Add in the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro.

This was another nontraditional stop that caused problems.

It saw the organizing committee face bankruptcy and Carlos Nuzman, the head of the committee, convicted of corruption, money laundering and tax evasion. The former IOC member is appealing.

“The IOC I think is viewed as a villain globally at this time, and they have to do something to change their image,” said Robert Baade, a sports economist at Lake Forest College outside Chicago. “I’m not sure that’s going to happen at any time soon.”

Baade is the co-author of “Going for Gold: The Economics of the Olympics,” an [economic] study that looks at the costs and benefits of the Games.

“It’s these little things, the five-star hotels, the elitism, the privilege that the IOC displays — and its eurocentrism,” Baade added.

Christophe Dubi, the Olympic Games’ executive director, acknowledged India has

expressed strong interest, but declined to name other countries that have.

Several Chinese cities have been mentioned as possibilities, along with Jakarta, Indonesia, Seoul and others.

“We have to respect that some are speaking confidentially to us because the public authorities are not fully on board, or sometimes governments are interested but it’s not the right timing,” Dubi said.

The IOC no longer runs a wide-open bidding process, instead selecting cities in which it has interest — and vice versa.

It puts the selection in the hands of the IOC leadership rather than with IOC members.

The 2036 host is unlikely to be picked until after the next IOC presidential election in 2025.

The other return to Asia could come with the 2030 Winter Olympics, where Sapporo, Japan — the 1972 Winter host — is probably the favorite.

Also in the mix could be Vancouver, Salt Lake City and a Spanish bid, perhaps from Barcelona.

The Japanese news agency Kyodo, citing unidentified sources, has reported that Sapporo and the IOC are in talks and a decision could come before the end of the year.

The city has put the cost at $2.4 billion to $2.6 billion.

The IOC owes Japan a favor after the oneyear delay of the 2020 Olympics cost organizers an added $2 billion.

Dubi would not confirm any of this but said the IOC was lucky to have Japan and China organizing the last two Olympics in the middle of the pandemic.

“I think we were very fortunate to have them as partners,” Dubi said. “I don’t say that others could not have done it. But if you had to pick two countries where it was always doable and where you wouldn’t have doubts that they could pull it off — it’s those two.”
