Free information literacy certificate classes, which will aid students in doing research, are being offered through the Richland library beginning in late February.

The classes will be held in the library (Room L-126) on a first come-first served basis. If students complete three courses, one from each of three main categories, they will receive an Information Literacy Certificate.

Amy Ferguson, instructional services librarian, said the topics for the library classes were collected by librarians and on the questions that students asked about most often.

“Information is always changing,” Ferguson said. “We’re living in an information age.

The tools we use change. The resources we use change.”

Ferguson said the literacy certificate courses are especially helpful for students who are here for the core curriculum.

“Most students think they know how to use Google so they think they know how to do research,” Ferguson said. “That’s ‘search’ and not ‘research’. That’s why these courses are important.”

Ferguson said that Google is fine for your personal life, but our students need to know how to do the research required for their classes.

The classes align with the campus Quality Enhancement Plan’s “Developing Learning Power” by focusing on the habits of the effective lifelong learner and incorporate thinking routines.

The classes are divided into three categories, labeled Pursue, Organize and Persist.

The Pursue classes will focus on critical curiosity or creativity. The Organize classes will center on Meaning Making, or Strategic Awareness. The Persist classes are based on Changing and Learning, or Resilience. All three categories pertain to information literacy and the topics will vary.

The courses will be taught by librarians and will begin Feb. 25 and end April 12. They will be offered days, evenings and a few Saturdays. Each will last 55 minutes. There is no sign-up. Students just show up until the classroom is filled.

Ferguson said it’s best to come about 10 minutes before a class starts to be assured a spot in the library computer lab.

In addition to the information literacy certificate classes, Ferguson said, NoodleTools classes will also be offered through the library beginning Feb. 26.

“It’s useful for organizing your research,” Ferguson said. “We’ve had NoodleTools for a while, but it’s the first time it has been offered [as a class]. It has a notecard feature, too, which you can print out.”

This 55-minute class introduces students to a number of functions, such as note-taking, outlining, citations, document archiving, annotations and collaborative research and writing. The class does not count toward the information library certificate.

If students are trying to write their first paper, NoodleTools would be quite helpful, Ferguson said.

The library instruction courses are not only available for Richland students but for anyone, including former students.

For more information, students are asked to pick up a brochure in the library for dates and times for all courses offered.

Richland Garland campus earns money for Garland’s employees Blanca Reyes Staff Writer

On Jan. 10 Richland Garland campus obtained a grant check for $363,550 from the Texas Workforce Commission Community and Chamber Relations director Tandy Dollar said that they have worked with the Texas Workforce Commission for many years and had the opportunity to apply for a grant through this time.

Dollar said that there are a huge variety of classes. These courses are determined based on the specific needs of each factory and company that submit their application for this training.

These courses range from computer programs such as Word, Excel and Power Point to CPR and basic electronic courses.

“We go anywhere from our seven- hour classes to our 57 -hour classes,” Dollar said about the length of these training courses.

Dollar said that this particular money will benefit nine main companies in the area which

have required training for their workers.

“The majority of the companies are part of Dallas County Manufacturers Association,” Dollar explained about who can receive this training. “I have worked closely with the manufacturers that are part of that association so those manufacturers are always invited to participate if they want to do it.”

Once the companies have received the grant, they are not able to receive it again for a certain period of time.

“You cannot just go for a grant to the next and the next,” Dollar said. She explained that the factories have to wait 12 months after the grant is finished to request another one.

Dollar said that it is a good way to get clients for their corporate training. Once the companies have paid for this kind of training, they have the opportunity to apply for the grant.

“This specific grant from Texas Workforce Commission is given just for community colleges or technical top colleges,” Dollar said.

This year this grant check will be benefiting around 250 employees of the Garland area.

Just when I thought the bloody fun was at an end, Ubisoft brought on a killer package with its brand new DLC, “High Tides.”

Players are able to obtain all four downloadable packs including, The Lost Expeditions, The Monkey Business Pack, The Warrior, and The Predator Pack. This gives players four new animals to hunt (yay, more purses!): the Mountain Lion, Thylacine, (cute little guys until they open their mouths), White Tiger and Red Vulture, annoying little buggers.

The DLC also provides six more single player missions, two new single player weapons, the Tribal Knife and Hunter’s M700 Predator Rifle. There are two multiplayer weapon unlocks, Type-10 Flare, Shotgun and the Predator Bow, if you’re into that archery stuff.

A new character is introduced, which happens to be my favorite. Hurk and his monkeys is definitely a one of a kind character. His crazy shananigans keeps the game fun for the players. Also, there are two new end-of-match movies for multi-

player starring Hurk and his monkeys.

Now that we got all of that out of the way, “High Tides” is a new mix to this dirty cocktail that gives the punch that it needs to keep the buzz going. If you have already played “Far Cry 3” or are still playing it, you know that this game is pretty lengthy, in a good way.

This gives players something to keep the game from going stale. The new character Hurk adds more to the story of this monstrous euphoric island, where you think you’ve seen and experienced everything but it still catches you off guard with a new part of the tale of this heroic and chaotic adventure.

“High Tides” left off where the original six co-op chapters where the gangs experience their final hours. The DLC will provide more brutal fights with more things at stake.

It’ll give players the time of their lives with memorable moments that you can’t get anywhere else.

So, there is no reason you should miss out on a DLC like this. I mean, it’s quite simple. Do you want to have more bloody fun? Or miss out on epic awesomeness?

Yeah you better rush to your consoles and buy “High Tides.” It’s only $9.99, it doesn’t get any better than that.

Arnold used to have it. He still does, albeit in a non-steroid body.

With â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Last Stand,â&#x20AC;? Arnold Schwarzenegger stars as a former soldier-turnedsheriff, Ray Owens, in Summerton Junction, a sleepy little border town on the heels of the Mexican border.

The plot revolves around a criminal (Richard Noriega) who escapes police custody in a modified, top-of-the-line Corvette that goes over 150 mph. His goal is to actually get out of the country and end up in his homeland of Mexico. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Last standâ&#x20AC;? marks the American debut of filmmaker Jee-Woon Kim, who made a decent horror flick with 2010â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s little-seen â&#x20AC;&#x153;I Saw the Devil.â&#x20AC;?

A nice addition is seeing character actor Luis Guzman in a good guy role. Guzman did that in the recent Alexandre Dumas update of â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Count of Monte Cristo,â&#x20AC;? he did so more recently with â&#x20AC;&#x153;Journey 2: the Myste-

rious Islandâ&#x20AC;? as a loving father and helicopter pilot.

Also having fun with his role is Johnny Knoxville as Lewis Dinkham, a local who has a whole cache of military weapons, including a old style WWII Vickers machine gun.

Playing the heavy once again is Peter Stormare, whom you might remember from putting his old friend (Steve Buscemi) through the wood chipper in â&#x20AC;&#x153;Fargo.â&#x20AC;?

The one-liners are in abundance here, especially when Schwarzeneggerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Ray Owens crashes through the window of a diner and customers ask how heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s doing and his response is just, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m old.â&#x20AC;?

Also mixed into the proceedings is Oscarwinner Forest Whitaker as FBI agent John Banister, a character who gets hung up on Owens.

Further fun comes with reference character actor extraordinaire Harry Dean Stanton as a curmudgeon and opinionated farmer. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Last Standâ&#x20AC;? delivers because itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s just old school dumb action with a satisfactory end.

Presidents of the United States in their inaugural addresses to set forth their vision for the country.

In Thomas Sowell’s book, “The Conflict of Visions,” there are two categories of visions; the unconstrained and the constrained. Those with an unconstrained vision believe in human reason and that important decisions should be made by the whole society and an elite group of government bureaucrats and experts. Those with a constrained vision believe in tradition and accumulated wisdom and that decisions should be made by individuals about what immediately concerns them, such as their lives and property.

President Barack Obama’s second inaugural address illustrates the collectivist’s unconstrained vision, while the late President Ronald Reagan’s first inaugural address illustrates the individualist’s constrained vision.

Well, if no one among us is capable of governing himself, then who among us has the capacity to govern someone else? All of us together, in and out of government, must bear the burden. The solutions we seek must be equitable, with no one group singled out to pay a higher price.”

Crisis and limits

“These United States are confronted with an economic affliction of great proportions. We suffer from the longest and one of the worst sustained inflations in our national history. It distorts our economic decisions, penalizes thrift and crushes the struggling young and the fixedincome elderly alike. It threatens to shatter the lives of millions of our people. …

“You and I, as individuals, can, by borrowing, live beyond our means, but for only a limited period of time. Unemployment, the tax system and deficit spending

Administration’s objective

“Well, this administration’s objective will be a healthy, vigorous, growing economy that provides equal opportunities for all Americans, with no barriers born of bigotry or discrimination. Putting America back to work means putting all Americans back to work. Ending inflation means freeing all Americans from the terror of runaway living costs. All must share in the productive work of this ‘new beginning,’ and all must share in the bounty of a revived economy. With the idealism and fair play which are the core of our system and our strength, we can have a strong and prosperous America, at peace with itself and the world.”

Since my political philosophy is conservative libertarianism, which advocates for constitutional limited government, I naturally selected Reagan’s constrained vision over Obama’s unconstrained vision.

Girls, you better make sure your boyfriend’s relationship status is “in a relationship” because women can now search “men who live in my city who are single.”

Facebook’s new Graph Search is rolling out in a couple months and has most people excited, some bored and all worried about privacy.

As GigaOM’s Mathew Ingram, one who used the beta version of Graph Search points out, you can search phrases like “Islamic men interested in men who live in Tehran, Iran” Should Facebook allow users to use Facebook Graph Search?

Searches will include photos, people, interests and places. Graph search allows users to search people who live in your city with similar interests as yours such as gaming or sports.

Although there hasn’t been any talk about having the option to opt out of Graph Search, using the feature “Me Only” will allow you to hide your content.

Privacy has been a constant battle with Facebook. However, new graph search imposes some good, such as, “electricians in my area who my friends like” or “clubs in Dallas that my friends like.”

Graph Search can make you feel more vulnerable in some aspects. It can also make you feel safer in others. Knowing that your friends like a certain electrician will make you feel more comfortable than searching a random company on Google, as would knowing certain friends frequently attend aforementioned bars.

Facebook’s Graph Search will not search the web like Google. Graph Search will pull up best related results extracted from your phrases.

We will have to wait and see for ourselves when Graph Search is released to the public.

Meet Mariana

ariana, a native of Mexico and mother of four, came to A&M-Commerce to pursue a career in bilingual education, something that wouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be possible if it werenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t for a group of alumni who took the time to teach her English.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;Wow, my life has changed so much after coming to A&M-Commerce,â&#x20AC;? she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I have grown as a person, as a woman, as a mom, and as a citizen.

I am really glad I decided to get involved with university life.â&#x20AC;?

A Stars on the Rise scholarship recipient, Mariana is excited to work in elementary education helping to bridge the gap between Hispanic families and American schools. She also hopes to pursue a masterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s degree in Spanish so she can teach and share her knowledge with others.

When sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not in class, Mariana enjoys volunteering with the Office of Hispanic Outreach and unwinding at the Morris Recreation Center. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The university staff has been so helpful with studying, scholarships and showing me opportunities to get involved,â&#x20AC;? she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I really love being an A&M-Commerce student.â&#x20AC;?
