T-ducks tame Mountain View Lions

The Richland men’s basketball team came from behind to pull out a squeaker over the Mountain View Lions 84-82 on the Lions’ home court Wednesday night.

In the first half, the Lions were able to take advantage of the Thunderducks and show good strategy.

However, Richland played tough and stronger in the second half and took over the lead.

“This game was tough because of the fans and the atmosphere in general,” guard Devonte Allen said.

Although the home fans were loud and sometimes hostile, the T-ducks were not intimidated. They were able to stay focused and united throughout the game.

“This game was tough because of the good opponent. However, we played much better in the second half,” guard Mister Carrol said.

Despite the striking domination of the game’s second half by the T-ducks, a few minutes before the final buzzer the Lions managed to score several times and pull within one point.

Nevertheless, thanks to head coach Bill Foy and his assistants, the Thunderducks were able to stay calm. They played strong defense, and scored the winning point surprising the Lions’ players, coaches and fans.

“We have many chances to get the championship. We have a good team,” Allen said about the national tournament, which will be held in New York March 14-16.

The team has a positive attitude about the approaching tournament, and they are trying to improve the already excellent team, which has a record of 28-10 at press time.

The T-ducks were to play Eastfield College in their final regular-season game Saturday.

With a final tick of the clock, the visiting T-ducks sealed a victory.

Henderson said, because of ADA issues, changes will next take place on the lower level of the library.

“We are going to install new shelving downstairs and move 75,000 books,” Henderson said. “That’s all of the books in the lower level.

The shelves run north and south. They are all 90 inches tall. We are going to buy new shelving that’s 78 inches tall. We’re going to rotate it so the shelving runs east to west.”

Henderson said by doing this, it will make all of the aisles meet ADA specifications.

“Some of the wheelchair turns are too tight,” Henderson said. “This will open it up so that it meets requirements. This is a project that’s still being designed, but we hope to complete it over the summer. Our objective is to have it done by the fall semester of 2013.”

Henderson said it will make the stacks accessible for those with mobility issues.

“The key word is ‘accessible,’” Henderson said.

Jerry Owens, assistant director of sustainability and utilities in facilities services, said the cost of the furniture in the computer lab totaled $120,309. It includes all other desks, tables for the library conference room, chairs and new work stations in the library.

The money for remodeling the library came from the campus budget and totaled $98,928.

“The construction we [Richland] have to be able to fund, but the district selects the architects and the specifications,” Owens said.

The library hours for spring are Monday through Thursday from 7:45 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.

On Fridays it’s from 7:45 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Saturdays, from noon to 4 p.m. The library is closed on Sundays.

Like everything in the government, applying and getting approved for financial aid takes more time than anyone wants to spend.

Because of this, waiting until the last few weeks before signing up could put you in a bind; or worse, prevent you from attending. The best time to sign up for FASFA or a Pell Grant is actually near the beginning of the prior semester.

The sooner you have your paperwork done, the sooner you can be processed. I signed off on my spring semester 2014 Pell Grant three weeks ago.

If you are on financial aid of some kind, you should swing by Thunderduck Hall and review your options with someone in the financial assistance department. They can help you get your funding in order.

NBC news leaked a frightening 16-page document on Feb. 4 explaining why the Justice Department feels it is necessary to use unmanned drone attacks in the killing of American citizens without warrants.

The killing of American citizens without trial has raised outrage and controversy.

Americans say this is a violation of the Fourth Amendment and the Fifth Amendment’s due process clause.

This memo addresses whether it is lawful or unlawful under the United States Constitution to “conduct a lethal operation” against a U.S. citizen. “(1) an informed, high-level official of the U.S. government has determined that the targeted individual poses an imminent threat of violent attack against the United States.” “(2) capture is infeasible, and the United States continues to monitor whether capture becomes feasible.” “(3) the operation is conducted in a manner consistent with the four fundamental

principles of the laws of war governing the use of force.”

The document also states that the president has “authority to respond to the imminent threat posed by al-Qaida” in the attempts to “protect the country.”

Who are these U.S. citizens being killed without trial?

The document states “a U.S. citizen who is a senior operational leader of al-Qaida or an associated force of al-Qaida.”

Lethal force can be used against anyone who is born on U.S. soil or obtains citizenship and thereafter joins al-Qaida or groups related and poses threat to the United States.

The document states that “the fact that such a person would also be a U.S. citizen would not alter this conclusion” under an act of national self-defense. The U.S. citizen who is a senior operational leader of al-Qaida then “automatically exposes himself for enemy attack” and does not give the person immunity from attack.

It will be hotly debated throughout the next few weeks until the Justice Department releases the full memo, as this “white paper” appears to be a summary.

The Irving Convention Center at Las Colinas was flooded with a massive barrage of storm troopers, starfleet officers and countless incarnations of The Doctor, from Feb. 9-10. The convention center played host to Sci-Fi Expo, one of three conventions hosted yearly by Official Pix Special Events that focuses on pop culture, science fiction and fantasy themes.

Attending fans were filled with a spirit of good will and excitement. They looked forward to interacting with each other.

Sci-Fi Expo, like most conventions, had numerous things to see and do during its two-day run. Fans could interact with other fans, guests could roam through the convention’s massive vender’s room in search of the next item to add to their collection, and cosplayers (people who like to go to conventions in elaborate costumes based on popular sci-fi or fantasy series) could walk a costume red carpet. Photographers could take pictures and enter into a costume contest to see who had the greatest costumes of the convention.

Fans could also pose with a custommade DeLorean car modified to resemble the iconic car from the famed “Back to the Future” film series.

Perhaps the biggest draw to any convention is the media stars who attend. Sci-Fi Expo was no exception.

This year’s Sci-Fi Expo saw many special guests arrive to interact with the fans in photo opportunities, signing autographs, and Q-and-A Panels. Among this year’s featured guests were “Back to the Future” stars Christopher Lloyd, Lea Thompson, James Tolkan, and Claudia Wells, “Battlestar Galactica” alumni Edward Olmos, Tricia Helfer and James Callis and legendary “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine” Captain Avery Brooks. Stars from the comic industry were also present to meet fans and sign books.

Those who missed out on the opportunity to visit shouldn’t feel too bad.

They will have a chance to join the fun as Official Pix Special Events will be hosting Dallas Comic Con on May 17-19 this spring. Although a full list of guests has yet to be released, William Shatner of the original “Star Trek” TV series fame has

There’s no supposed “silent” movie at the Academy Awards this year. Of course I’m referring to “The Artist,” last year’s winner for best picture.

History was made earlier this year with the nominations. The youngest and eldest female performers are up for awards in the best actress race. At 9, Quvenzhane Wallis of “Beasts of the Southern Wild” is the youngest, while 85-year-old Emmanuelle Riva of the French Alzheimer’s saga “Amour” ranks as the oldest.

This year is all about history with Ben Affleck’s 1970s hostage tale “Argo” and Steven Spielberg’s “Lincoln,” which was all about the passage of the 13th Amendment.

Also included in the best picture mix are the musical adaptation of “Les Miserables,” the story of traumatized individuals in David O. Russell’s “Silver Linings Playbook,” Ang Lee’s saga “Life of Pi” and Kathryn Bigelow’s tale of the hunting of Osama bin Laden in “Zero Dark Thirty.”

This year’s nine best picture nominees also include the low budget tale of life on the bayou in “Beasts of the Southern Wild,” Quentin Tarantino’s “Django Unchained” and the tale of steadfast elderly love in “Amour,” which is also up for the foreign film Oscar.

With the best actor race, one name is expected to emerge: Daniel Day-Lewis, who portrays the title character in “Lincoln.” Also

in the running are Bradley Cooper for “Silver Linings Playbook,” Joaquin Phoenix in the cult-themed “The Master,” Hugh Jackman for the musical “Les Miserables” and Denzel Washington as the conflicted airline pilot in the addiction-drama “Flight.” Don’t be surprised, however, if Jackman pilfers the golden statuette from Day-Lewis.

The best actress race is another category with a lock. That’s the performance of Jennifer Lawrence in “Silver Linings Playbook.”

Also nominated are Jessica Chastain for “Zero Dark Thirty,” Naomi Watts in the beautiful but hard-to-watch drama “The Impossible,” as well as Wallis in “Beasts of the Southern Wild” and Riva for “Amour.”

I think that in the case of both Wallis and Riva, the nomination itself is an acknowledgment of their performances and unlikely to produce wins.

Best director is yet another given category, namely Spielberg for “Lincoln.” For crying out loud, he was even snubbed for 1985’s “The Color Purple.” He finally received his first win in 1993 for the epic master stroke that was “Schindler’s List.” Spielberg’s toughest competition comes from Russell for “Silver Linings Playbook.”

Also nominated are Michael Hanke for “Amour,” Benh Zeitlin for ”Beasts of the Southern Wild” and Lee for “Life of Pi.” The 85th Academy Awards air Sunday at 7 p.m. on ABC.

Ever hear a speaker who got your attention and kept it for an entire speech?

Dr. Benjamin Carson, world-renowned neurosurgeon, told the National Prayer Breakfast audience in Washington recently that his mother, who had a third-grade education and worked three jobs as a domestic, knew he and his brother were smart, made them turn off the television and read two books a week from the public library and write reports about them.

“You know, after a while, I actually began to enjoy reading those books because we were very poor, but between the covers of those books I could go anywhere, I could be anybody, I could do anything. I began to read about people of great accomplishment; and as I read those stories, I began to see a connecting thread.

“I began to see that the person who has the most to do with you and what happens to you in life is you. You make decisions. You decide how much energy you want to put behind that decision. And I came to understand that I had control of my own destiny. And, at that point, I didn’t hate poverty anymore, because I knew it was only temporary. I knew I could change that. It was incredibly liberating for me, made all the difference.”

Carson commented upon education, fiscal irresponsibility, taxes and health care.

“Why is it so important that we educate our people? Because we don’t want to go down the pathway as so many pinnacle nations that have preceded us. I think particularly about ancient Rome. Very powerful. Nobody could even challenge them militarily, but what happened to them? They destroyed themselves from within. Moral decay, fiscal irresponsibility,” he said.

Carson would replace the existing federal income tax system with a flat and fair tax modeled after the tithe.

He said, “What about our taxation system? So complex there is no one who can possibly comply with every jot and tittle of our tax system. If I wanted to get you, I could get you on a tax issue. That doesn’t make any sense. What we need to do is come up with something that is simple.”

“When I pick up my Bible, you know what I see? I see the fairest individual in the universe, God, and he’s given us a system. It’s called tithe. Now we don’t necessarily have to do it 10 percent, but it’s principle. He didn’t say, if your crops fail, don’t give me any tithes. He didn’t say, if you have a bumper crop, give me triple tithes. So there must be something inherently fair about proportionality.”

A practicing physician, Carson briefly outlined his alternative solution to the health care crisis: “When a person is born, give him a birth certificate, an electronic medical record, and a health savings account to which money can be contributed — pretax — from the time you’re born ’til the time you die. If you die,

you can pass it on to your family members, and there’s nobody talking about death panels.

are indigent. Instead of sending all this money to some bureaucracy, let’s put it in their HSAs. Now they have some control over their own health care. And very quickly they’re going to learn how to be responsible.”

Carson said the response to his speech has been “overwhelmingly” positive.

Carson’s life is one of achievement and success through hard work and persistence.

Carson graduated from Yale University, majoring in psychology and the University of Michigan Medical School He completed his internship in general surgery and his residency in neurological surgery at The Johns Hopkins Medical Institution.

When he was 33, Carson became the youngest director of the Division of Pediatric

Neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins.

Carson and his surgical team made medical history in 1987 when they operated for 22 hours and separated the back of the heads of conjoined twins (the Binder twins). The twins survived and live independently today.

Carson’s medical practice focuses on traumatic brain injuries, brain and spinal cord tumors, achondroplasia, neurological and congenital disorders, craniosynostosis, epilepsy and trigeminal neuralgia.

In 1994 Carson and his wife, Candy, created the Carson Scholars Fund which awards each year a “$1,000 college scholarship for students in grades 4-11 who excel academically and are dedicated to serving their community.” More than 5,200 scholarships and medals have been awarded across the nation.

He has written more than 100 neurosurgical articles and several bestselling books including “Gifted Hands: The Ben Carson Story,” “Think Big,” “The Big Picture,” “Take The Risk,” and his most recent, “America the Beautiful: Rediscovering What Made This Nation Great.”

“Gifted Hands,” a made-for-TV movie about Carson’s life starring Academy Award winner Cuba Gooding Jr. as Carson and Kimberly Elise as his mother Sonja, was broadcast in 2007.

In 2008 Carson received the nation’s highest civilian award, the Medal of Freedom, from President George W. Bush in the White House.

University of Texas at Arlington photography department presents the best students’ works from recent classes, selected by their faculty led by professor Kenda North.

The exhibit, located in the Brazos Gallery, provides wide varieties from monochrome to color photography with both traditional and digital darkroom process as well as exploring three dimensional works.

Students came over to see their work while the reception took place on Feb. 8 at 6-8p.m.

The exhibit will be open until March. 1.

Now that we are blessed with modern technology, Dr. Mehmet Oz on his TV show discussed having unlimited information ready at our fingertips, which is highly stressful. That causes anxiety and other factors which play into our daily lives.

With that in mind, I decided to do a bit of research of my own by setting a goal to live without technology for four days.

Before I started, I didn't imagine it would be as difficult as it turned out to be.

My mindset was that I'd have free time to exercise and possibly read. Although I did those things, sacrificing my computer, phone and television was more stressful than actually using them.

During the first day, I felt a bit of freedom. One daily objective I frequently avoid is exercise. First thing in the morning, I went for a walk and I also enjoyed more time with my family and felt rather at peace.

On dreaded Day 2, after taking a walk in the woods near my house to truly observe nature and animals in their natural habitat, I finally became bored. Arriving home I found myself pacing back and forth forgetting why I started in the first place. At that moment it took a lot of dedication and selfpreservation to stay on my path of feeling at peace with one's self without technology.

Day 3: I caved. After reading “To Have Or To Be” by Erich Fromm, I found myself lying on my bed, staring at the ceiling, justifying a “10-minute window” that would allow me to check emails, Facebook and text messages. That window remained open for much

That guilt weighed on me for too long before I realized that I had finished. Three days in, I was too stressed to continue when I remembered why I had begun the process in the first place.

The key is not to completely take away technology. We're in too deep for that. We must learn to distance ourselves from tech long enough to enjoy the little things in life.

When we're having conversations with one another, put down your phone and truly listen to them. Too often I find myself gazing aimlessly at my phone while someone is speaking to me and I find the other person frequently asking “huh?”

Keep tabs on how many times you check your emails and Facebook daily and begin to observe the difference in daily life.

hris, a music major and graduate of Celina High School, chose to attend A&M-Commerce after being admitted to the Honors College and hearing the wind ensemble play at the Evening at the Eisemann.

“I was blown away by the quality of music I heard, and by the scholarship I was offered,” Chris said.

Two of Chris’ favorite classes, The 1960s: A Nation Divided and Cinema, Philosophy and the Political, complemented his music studies by delving into the human experience, something that Chris feels is at the root of music appreciation.

“Most everything that is a part of American culture today finds its roots (or at least influences) in the turbulence of the 1960s, and many of the issues aroused during that time are still issues today, issues which demand not only solutions, but a better knowledge of their origins to find those solutions.”

It’s Steinway Artist, Dr. Luis Sanchez, an internationally acclaimed pianist and Chris’ piano professor, however, that inspires him to excel in music.
