Editor-in-Chief When Lauren Bacall died on Aug. 12, it wasn’t just the passing of a legend; it was the passing of an era. Bacall was the last survivor of the Golden Age of Hollywood.

According to Bacall in a 2011 interview with Vanity Fair, her son asked her, “Do you realize you are the last one? The last person who was an eyewitness to the Golden Age?” The talkies arrived in 1927 with the release of the wildly popular film, “The Jazz Singer,” and the Golden Age of Hollywood began.

For the next 40 years, major movie studios, MGM, 20th Century Fox, Paramount, RKO and Warner Bros., to name a few, enjoyed a heyday of filmmaking success.

Hollywood’s Golden Age hadn’t dawned when Betty Joan Perske was born in the Bronx, New York, on Sept. 16, 1924. Her alcoholic father left when she was 6. Her mother then reverted to her maiden name of Bacal, to which she added a second “l.”

Her career began with noted fashion columnist Diana Vreeland, who discovered her and was instrumental in arranging her appearance on a March 1943 cover of Harper’s Bazaar magazine, an event that would take her from the bright lights of New York City to the brighter lights of Hollywood and fame.

Nancy Hawks, wife of renowned Hollywood director Howard Hawks, saw the magazine cover and convinced her husband to screen test Bacall. And the rest isn’t just history; it’s the stuff of legend.

In 1944, Warner Bros. hired a 19-year-old unknown, Betty Bacall, to star with Humphrey Bogart in a film loosely based on Earnest Hemingway’s novel “To Have and Have Not,” and in the process, Lauren Bacall was born.

Bacall’s sensual trademark, “The Look,” was an accident resulting from nerves during her first screen tests. Because she was literally quivering, she discovered that tilting her chin down and eyes up calmed the quiver.

In a 1994 National Public Radio interview, Bacall said she never intended to have a look.

“It was just a way to keep my head steady.”

On CNN’s “Larry King Show” in 2005, Bacall talked about Howard Hawks. “He was a Svengali. He wanted to mold me. He wanted to control me. And he did until Mr. Bogart got involved.”

And Mr. Bogart definitely got involved.

They had a son, Stephen Humphrey and a daughter, Leslie Howard, named after the actor Leslie Howard, who helped Bogart get started in acting.

Though Bogart died of esophageal cancer in 1957 and Bacall lived another 57 years, she’ll always be connected with Bogart.

Her life went on. She married again and had a second son, Sam, with actor Jason Robards.

She acted in many movies, starred on Broadway and television. In fact, she voiced a role on “Family Guy” this year.

She received many awards for her work, both in film and onstage.

She won a Golden Globe and was nominated for an Oscar for her role in “The Mirror Has Two Faces.” She received two Tony Awards, the first in 1970 for “Applause” and the second in 1980 for “Woman of the Year.” Her autobiography, “Lauren Bacall:

By Myself” won the National Book Award in 1980.

She was prophetic in her 2011 interview in Vanity Fair when she said, “My obit is going to be full of Bogart, I’m sure.”

I think I’ll always remember her most fondly in her first four movies, the ones with Bogart: my personal favorite, the afore-mentioned “To Have and Have Not” (1944), followed by “The Big Sleep” (1946), “Dark Passage” (1947), and “Key Largo” (1948). Those film noir classics form the heart of the Bogie and Bacall mystique for me. The two are inseparable.

ThunderDust update

This is the calm before the ThunderDust storm as Richland awaits the construction and the crews await all-important permits from the City of Dallas, said Austin Longacre, assistant director of facilities.

Those permits cannot be issued until the city receives specific requirements from the arborists.

There are guidelines for protecting trees that must be followed during construction and development. Those guidelines were

set forth in article ten in May 1994, which revised the existing landscape code.

Arborists are also required by law to follow the specific guidelines of the Landscape and Tree Preservation Ordinance to assure the preservation of existing trees and the removal of protected trees.

Construction is seldom timely or smooth, but patience and preparation may be key to a successful outcome this semester.

2: “No, because it was a humanitarian standpoint.”

2: “Right now they are already killing each other so if the result is to stop whatever is going on, it’s all right even though it isn’t right.”

3: “The U.S. is trying to stop the bombings so from a peace standpoint they are trying to resolve the issue. I think it will be resolved some day but something big will have to happen first to change the people’s viewpoints.”

3: “We were already at war. They are already involved somewhat. So, I guess they need to fix the problems going on over there.”

Richland celebrated 50 years of student success in the federal TRIO programs Thursday in Wichita Hall, Room WH-201.

A live video stream from the U.S. Department of Education discussing the 50th anniversary was shown and refreshments were available.

TRIO was established in 1964 by President Lyndon B. Johnson as part of his War on Poverty program.

It has expanded to include eight federal outreach and student services programs dedicated to aiding students from disadvantaged backgrounds, including low-income individuals, first-generation college students and students with disabilities.

TRIO was named for the three (“trio”) initial federal programs; Upward Bound, Talent Search and Student Support Services (SSS).

Students enrolled in the TRIO SSS program were asked to share experiences and thoughts about the program.

All students interviewed were unanimous in their praise and gratitude for the programs.

They appreciated the tutoring, counseling, encouragement and willingness of the staff and volunteers to help in both educational and personal situations.

Every student said they would recommend the program to others.

Clara Essen, a 64-year-old Richland alumna and the TRIO SSS program, graduated in 2014 with an Associate of Science degree.

She now attends UT Dallas to pursue a bachelor’s degree in health care studies.

Essen imigrated to the U.S. from the tribe Ibo in eastern Nigeria. Essen credited the SSS program with improving her study and listening skills. She appreciated the one-onone attention from advisers and the “amazing program director,” Noeli Biggs. She said, “TRIO nurtured me.”

The program helped her to “continue climbing.”

Essen said, “I am determined to leave a footprint … the thing I love most is to serve.”

Carmal Ross, 41 and originally from Chicago, is a nursing major.

She wants to work in the nursing field because of an accident that left her unable to walk for three months.

When she recovered, she decided to return to school to pursue her nursing goal.

Ross was grateful for the tutors and tutoring lab.

“Just the tutoring room alone was a great help to me,” she said.

Ross said the comradery and diversity at Richland was enriching, as well as helpful in creative writing classes.

“It’s so nice to talk to people from different places and at different stages of their lives,” she said.

Addis Gonte, 21, is a business major who intends to transfer to UT Dallas to get his business degree.

He credits TRIO with boosting his selfconfidence and determination to continue his education.

Gonte said, “I was able to get out of my developmental classes, especially with the math boot camp and enter college-level math.”

“It’s an overall well-rounded support system on campus.” Gonte said.

Kofi Kuakumensah, 41, will pursue a double major in French and sociology with a minor in music.

He’s originally from Togo, West Africa, where he was a music instructor for the blind.

He plays piano, trumpet and guitar.

His goal is to teach and be an advocate for the disabled.

Kuakumensah appreciates the TRIO program “for its wide range of services not limited to academic advising, tutoring … career exploration and scholastic awareness.”

Citing his difficulty with the English language, Kuakumensah said, “The tutoring center taught me skills in math, science, reading and writing.”

Noeli Biggs, TRIO SSS director, is a native of Brazil. She grew up in a family who didn’t encourage education for women. Biggs said the TRIO SSS program has been at Richland since 1991. She has been director since 2010.

Biggs had nothing but the highest praise for her entire staff in their efforts to help students.

She said for her, “coming to work is Christmas every day.”

‘Expendable’ but fun RICKY MILLER Entertainment Editor

The previous chapters in the “Expendables” franchise both carried R ratings.

This new version goes for the more parent/ teenager friendly PG-13 rating.

Sylvester Stallone does not direct this entry, however.

Instead, it is helmed by Patrick Hughes, whose only other significant credit was the 2010 western “Red Hill,” with “True Blood’s” Ryan Kwanten.

Most of the cast returns save for Bruce Willis, who obviously wanted more money for his role of no consequence.

In lieu of his name on the marquee, the filmmakers got the always reliable Harrison Ford to fill in as the authoritarian figure of the flick.

New to the mix in this entry are Wesley Snipes, Antonio Banderas, Kelsey Grammer, UFC fighter and champion Ronda Rousey, Victor Ortiz (“Dancing With the Stars”) Kellan Lutz (Emmett Cullen of the “Twilight” franchise) and Mel Gibson.

It is funny because like last chapter’s mention of Lundgren’s Fulbright scholarship award, this one weaves in a mention of Snipes’ onscreen absence for tax evasion.

Do not expect Shakespeare when watching this inane action flick that actually improves on the antics of the last chapter.

Also returning are Terry Crews, Dolph Lundgren, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jet Li, Jason Statham and Randy Couture.

This chapter finds Stallone’s Barney Ross getting rid of his old team (Statham, Lundgren, Cotoure and Crews) only to enlist a whole new fresher younger team albeit with imperfections.

Gibson looks a touch weathered and a bit worn in his role as Stonebanks, who fancies himself as one of the original expendables.

Amusing is Antonio Banderas’ Galgo who never shuts up when his persona is on the screen.

He wants a place to call home since he feels his skills should be put to good use.

All the scenes he shares with Stallone are amusing because he rolls his eyes whenever Galgo talks.

What was really cool was seeing Rousey take down a few opponents with some nifty fight sequences.

Ford’s character Drummer constantly talks about wanting Stonebanks kept alive for being tried for war crimes.

His identity is painted as evil incarnate, one who does no value human life in the very least.

Even though the box office totals were down considerably for the latest “Expendables” entry, I would not mind seeing the geriatric crowd take on some new baddies in the next chapter.

Grade: C

“The Giver” just plain suffers. It wants to be profound while at the same time it comments on today’s society while trying to be dynamic in its storytelling.

I wanted to be enthralled, but after the first hour or so, I became disinterested in the characters and their plights.

This one comes from Lois Lowry’s Newberry Award-winning novel of the same name.

Oscar-winner Jeff Bridges is “The Giver” of the story. His eyes are witness to the whole color spectrum of the world, rather than a monochromatic black-and-white world.

Katie Holmes and Alexander Skarsgård are the birth parents of Brenton Thwaites’ Jonas, a character whose position in today’s society gets him hand-picked to visit Jeff Bridges’

title character. Jonas’ job is to be the community’s receiver of memories.

Also supporting is Meryl Streep as chief elder, a woman with a high-ranking position of power in the community.

I was actually looking forward to this quite a bit. Director Philip Noyce has done some amazing work in the past, including guiding a teen Nicole Kidman in 1989’s suspenseful “Dead Calm,” which had her sharing time with an older Sam Neill.

For me, this one is like “The Golden Compass,” an interesting little flick that was supposed to be crafted into a trilogy. After the final receipts and grosses came in, however, it turned out to be just another one-and-done.

Grade: C — Ricky Miller

story about T. S. Garp, (Robin Williams) who was conceived by a nurse and unwed mother (newcomer Glenn Close, who was Oscar nominated the first time out of the gate).

Garp, of course, is a struggling writer trying to get his voice read by the masses in middle America. The book comes from writer John Irving. John Lithgow provides humorous support as Roberta Muldoon, who used to play football for the Philadelphia Eagles.

I have a couple of lifelong friends who do not care for this particular flick in the least.

Thankfully, I am not one who agrees with their mindset. They think it is a very biased movie that was about total male bashing and a mean spirited movie. (Grade: A-) “The Fisher King” (1991) This one was a stroke of greatness, in part because it came from the mind of filmmaker Terry Gilliam, the

genius behind “Time Bandits” and “Brazil.”

Williams is a homeless person named Parry who has visions of finding the Holy Grail in the Big Apple.

He finds a kindred spirit in Jeff Bridges as Jack, a radio show “shock jock,” who feels an obligation to help Parry with his predicament.

For me, this flick was significant because my fellow colleague and friend Stuart Babitch and I both got our reviews printed in the Plano Star Courier, the local newspaper that did not have a voice writing about entertainment.

We had written for smaller newspapers, but like Rupert Pupkin in Martin Scorsese’s “The King of Comedy” we just waited to speak to the editor-in-chief of the paper, Wayne Epperson, who never met us.

Instead politely declined to talk to us, but before leaving we left our printed reviews.

Later that afternoon, we left discouraged and downtrodden. Low and behold, later that day they said they would like us to start contributing to their newspaper on a weekly basis.

(Grade A) “Good Will Hunting” (1997) My journey with this flick was significant because I was able to participate on a junket in New York City for this particular title.

I took part in interviewing director Gus Van Sant as well as screenwriters Matt Damon and Ben Affleck.

I spoke with all of them, including Minnie Driver, who has a significant role as Will’s muse of the story.

The duo won Academy Awards for their writing. So did Williams, who also won an Oscar for best supporting actor. (Grade A-)

The world’s still buzzing about an actor that touched so many people in different ways.

I, of course, am talking about Robin Williams, a very talented actor who always made me smile.

I even think back to his mediocre flicks like his enjoyable pairing with Kurt Russell in the football–themed “The Best of Times,” in which he gets the chance to make a do-over with a chance to play a crucial play-off game one last time.

High summer temperatures on and off Richland fields BLANCA REYES Sports Editor

Despite the hot summer temperatures and stress of the beginning a new semester, Richland athletes are getting ready for a new season, an opportunity to give their best in the classroom and on the field and courts.

Fall is especially busy for Richland’s Athletic Department since several teams play during the semester.

Volleyball, men’s soccer and women’s soccer teams are ready to try out for the select groups that hope to fight for a national championship.

Although every team puts all their effort into practices, for teams like soccer, which play and practice outside, it is challenging to keep hydrated in the high temperatures.

The safety and health of the players is one of the main concerns to the coaching team.

They say they do everything to advise the players on how important prehydration and nutrition are.

Scott Toups, women’s soccer head coach, emphasized the importance of eating something before the practices.

Toups said that the team practices twice a day. The first practice is early in the morning and then after a break there is another from noon until 2 p.m.

exhausting,” said Karla Tapia, who is playing her second season. “You feel like you drain out.”

Plenty of water, sodium and food are the best friends for players during summer heat practices, according to Tapia.

Valerie Pacheco, a returning player, said that the team trusts its coaches and tries to follow advice to stay healthy and give their best. Pacheco also said she knows the coaches will never put players in danger, so they feel safe despite the temperatures.

“Drink water and eat right,” Sabrina Machorro said.

Machorro is a new player, but said that she has total confidence in the coaching team.

In addition, Machorro explained that despite the extreme temperatures, players give their best on the field because they are used to playing under these conditions.

The Thunderducks were scheduled to play their second game of the season Friday night against Hill College.

At the press time, the next game was scheduled for 6 p.m. today (Aug. 26) in Cisco against Cisco College. Richland’s volleyball team played its third doubleheader this season against Hill College and then Trinity Valley College Friday.

Although the team fought to overcome the opponents, the T-Ducks fell short in all the matches.

“We lost in three, but each game we got better and better, “ head coach Zelda Smith said. “The girls improved and learned each other’s place, so I expect things go up from here.”

Smith said that the team needs to improve its serves and swinging, but she knows they are going to become very competitive. “The biggest thing is maintaining the confidence,” Smith said. “Be confident. Do what they have been doing in practices.”

“We can just learn from it and get better,” defensive specialist Taryn Dungan said.

“We made a lot of mistakes. We gave up lots of points,” middle back/outside hitter Evelyn Britton said.

“I think we are pretty good, but we made little mistakes and they take advantage of it,” defensive specialist Alexis Sims said.

At press time, the T-Ducks were scheduled to play Saturday morning at Brookhaven College.

Also, the Thunderducks were scheduled to play tonight (Aug. 26) at 6 p.m. at Richland’s fields against Dallas Christian College.

Chancellor visits the Thunderducks Dr. May emphasizes importance of education during challenging times

Dr. Joe May, Dallas County Community College District (DCCCD) chancellor, was on the Richland campus Wednesday to deliver the first in his series of Joe Talks. He spoke to a crowd of mostly faculty in Fannin Performance Hall.

“The reality is things are good,” he said.

Last year Dallas was fourth in the nation in job growth. Over 100,000 jobs were created throughout the district.

“So what’s the problem?” May asked, then answered, “Not everyone is prospering.”

People are being left behind.

According to May, 40 percent of Dallas’ adult population is on the brink of poverty right now. They are one step away from disaster. A car wreck, an unexpected medical expense, any unforeseen happening has the potential to tip them over that brink and into poverty.

May said that 1,000 people a day move into Texas. The economy is improving and Dallas is a big part of that growth.

“Over the past year, we’ve seen a 5 percent growth in population and a 41 percent growth in poverty.”

People are falling into poverty faster than jobs are being created. May attributes this disparity to the loss of middle-class jobs.

May’s position is, “Poverty – it’s everyone’s problem.” Accordingly, he’s a very active and vocal proponent for the restoration of

the middle class. He believes in growing the Dallas economy by creating middle-class jobs.

May is the founding president of Rebuilding America’s Middle Class, a national consortium of community colleges dedicated to providing opportunities for everyone to pursue the American dream.

According to a 1980 map of the area, most of the poverty was concentrated in south Dallas.

By 2010 the demographics had changed drastically. “We’ve seen it become a part of virtually every community, every region,” May said.

May referenced Jim Clifton, president and CEO of the organization responsible for Gallup Polls, who conducted a survey. The results determined that “what the whole world wants is a job.”

May sees the conundrum as the growth of jobs and the growth of poverty at the same time. People desperately want jobs. Employers desperately want qualified workers, but 53 percent of them find it difficult to hire qualified people.

Education is the obvious answer to both problems. In 1970, 75 percent of middle-class workers had high school educations. By 2018, 63 percent of jobs will require some higher education or certification.

Today, “Everyone is better off in college – some college is for everyone,” May said.

Certification vs. an associate degree can make a big difference in earning power. May said 43 percent of people with licenses and certificates can out-earn people with associate’s degrees and 27 percent can out-earn people with bachelor’s degrees. For people

with associate degrees, 31 percent out-earn people with bachelor’s degrees in today’s economy.

The fastest growing areas for employment opportunities are health services and nursing, technology, hospitality and tourism.

The quickest avenue toward those jobs is through the doors of community colleges. The current economic climate makes community colleges both economical and practical.

“We’ve always been important. Today we’re absolutely essential,” May said.

May outlined DCCCD’s priorities, which include solving educational problems, ensuring success, eliminating barriers, expanding dual enrollment and addressing Pre-K teacher enrollment There are approximately 10,000 students in the area enrolled in the dual enrollment process. Dual enrollment saves money and time, as well as encouraging students to continue the educational process. A shortage of 1,900 Pre-K teachers is currently depriving 37,000 children in the Dallas area of the chance to go to school.

Additional priorities include providing short-term training for jobs, partnering with employers and guaranteeing transfers to fouryear colleges.

May concluded his talk with the observation that today’s political climate is divisive and colleges can bring people together. Richland is a great example of that statement with its campus representation of 140 countries.

“We are citizens of the world,” the chancellor said.

Vacation. That was the first thing that was on my mind as the Spring Semester came to an end.

Like most students, I wanted to do as many fun activities with the least amount of money as possible.

My goals for the summer were to learn an instrument, exercise more and travel. Little did I know that I could do all of it without really having to go too far or bankrupt myself.

Enter Richland College. As I was strumming my guitar strings trying to decide where to start, the words of Professor Jan Ryberg kept ringing in my head, “Sign up for private summer classes at Richland. It’s a steal deal.”

Of course, like most students, the last place I wanted to look was at school, so I decided to search for private lessons elsewhere. The cheapest instructor I found asked for $100 for every hour of instruction. At that moment, I decided to listen to that voice in my head and went to the Music Department at Fannin Hall.

“That’ll be $52,” said Derrick Logozzo, music professor. “$52 per hour? No way, I replied,” He explained it was $52 for Summer I – that would give me four weeks of one-onone private instruction.

That’s when my jaw dropped. Four weeks of private instruction with some of the nation’s most renowned music professors. Now that’s a real steal deal. The same instructors charge three times that outside of school.

At that point, I knew I needed to revise my vacation plans and look on campus.

It has always been my dream to travel the world and experience other cultures.

That dream came true during Summer II at Richland.

Soccer class for Summer Session II at Richland reflects campus diversity.

I signed up for a soccer class with Professor Sean Worley, men’s soccer coach. When I showed up to class at the Thunderducks' soccer field, something striking happened.

I noticed that out of the more than 40 students who showed up, no two students came from the same country of origin.

When I spoke to them, I realized how diverse my campus was. “I’m from Yamoussoukro,” one of the students said when I

were. The only barrier we all faced was the formidable goalie, who boasted “I spent my entire childhood playing goalie in the streets of Yaoundé, so if you guys think you can score now, you are fooling yourselves.” “I’m a Cameroonian shield,” he added as he punched his left fist into his right palm.

All the countries’ cultures that I once dreamed of experiencing came together in one place. I could not really ask for more. How

could I? From Albania to Ghana to Nepal— all were there.

As I was sharing my discovery with another classmate, he said “You know, most people think we all come from the same country, but we don’t, although we all have sunburned skin.

What we share in common, though, is our love for the same game and the fact that we all want to finish school with straight A’s” Zar Zexor, my friend from Bangladesh quipped as he passed me the ball.

The more I interacted with my classmates, the more I realized what I could have missed if I had not signed up for summer classes.

When I spoke to John, who was born in Abuja, Nigeria, he told me about the languages he spoke besides English: Igbo, Hausa, Yoruba … and the list goes on.

Some of my classmates spoke languages whose people don’t even have representation at the United Nations, like in the case of Ali, who is from Casablanca, Morocco and who spoke Berber.

Or Megersa, who was born in Addis Ababa and told me that there are more than 83 languages spoken in Ethiopia, his home country. Megersa spoke six.

As we put on our bibs to go for the second game, everything else faded away. At that time, nothing else seemed to matter, except for the fact we needed to work as a team to score a goal.

The next time you need to see the different cultures of the world, learn an instrument or two for a fraction of the real price and make friends from every continent, then look no further, because our campus has more to offer than you can imagine.
