Auditions for “Rashomon� by Ryunosuke Akutagawa will take place from 6:30 to 10 p.m. on Aug. 27 in the Fannin Performance Hall, F-102. Callbacks will be on Aug. 28. Andy Long, drama department chair, is the director.

The plot concerns the wife of a Samurai officer assaulted and killed by a roving bandit.

At the trial, the contradictory versions of what happened are re-enacted by the bandit, the wife and the dead husband who speaks through a sorceress. Each version is true in its own fashion.

This production will feature a great deal of stage combat. It will also be an entry in The American College Theatre Festival, with the opportunity to advance as far as the Kennedy Center in Washington, D. C. The production will run Oct. 8-11 in Fannin Performance Hall.

Brenda McKinney, a Richland adjunct art instructor, has spent her summer in the Metroplex while her artwork tours Europe.

This particular piece of artwork is a mandala.

“Over several years I have been wanting to do mandalas,” McKinney said. “Over the past six months it all came together.

“First of all, I wanted to incorporate recycled materials. Second of all, I wanted to address what is happening in our culture.”

McKinney chose discarded lottery ticket scratch-offs as her recycled medium because they represent a current element of our culture.

McKinney describes mandalas as “ancient tools for healing, [a] spiritual realization that they use in the Buddhist faith. Tibetan, Hinduism, even the Celtics use all of that in their crosses and in their books, the old manuscripts.”

The Mandala Project defines a mandala as a Sanskrit word that means “circle.” The typical mandala is symmetrical in shape with boundaries and a circle in the center. It represents wholeness, a model for the structure of life itself.

The Project web site said a mandala is designed to remind us of our relation to the infinite, both beyond and within our bodies and minds.

The opportunity for the inclusion of McKinney’s artwork in the 2014 European tour catalogue came through her long-time association with the Texas Visual Arts Association.

“I was the president [of the association] for three years and on their board for five [years],” she said. “I became a signature member, which means I entered five of their citation shows and I was juried into them.”

Being juried into shows means a panel of jurors evaluates all the entries and selects the works to be included in each show. To become

a signature member, an artist is required to be juried into five shows.

“And it was five years in a row,” McKinney said, “so I was invited to be in the catalogue and the catalogue is traveling through Europe.

The first stop on the European tour was Seville, Spain. From there it will travel to Stockholm, Sweden, Lithuania, Romania, and on to its final destination in Sicily, Italy.

McKinney has had local exhibitions of her work at the Bath House Cultural Center, the 14th Street Gallery, and Gallery 422 at The Workroom.

She is currently creating new works for this fall. Her next solo exhibiton is scheduled to open on: Oct. 1 and run through Oct. 25, 2014 at Gallery 422 at The Workroom, 422 Singleton Blvd. in Dallas.

Students, faculty and employees beware!

A ThunderDust storm is coming to the east side of campus. Unlike most storms, however, when this one passes the East Drive area it will be safer for drivers and pedestrians alike.

While there is no definite start date at this time, assistant director of facilities Austin Longacre, who is spearheading this project, said construction will begin just as soon as appropriate permits are received from the City of Dallas.

The planned traffic improvement will include an additional exit lane adjacent to the soccer fields to aid traffic flow from the east. An additional right turn lane will be added to the East Drive entrance to the campus.

The current DART stop will be moved further west on Walnut Street and a sidewalk will be added connecting to the relocated DART stop.

Safer, clearly marked crosswalks will be created with new signage and with reflective pavement markers on both the east and west sides of campus.

The kiosk on the entrance to the East Drive will have further updates. Awareness and preparation will be the keys to surviving this storm with as little disruption as possible.

Next week’s edition of the Chronicle will have further information, plus maps detailing the exact locations of the affected areas.

2014 -- A lack of enticing movies RICKY MILLER

This year has yet to bring any exceptional flicks save for director James Gunn’s enthralling “Guardians of the Galaxy,” which obviously helped make the Marvel banner a tad stronger.

Further exceptions came with Jon Favreau’s “Chef,” Lasse Hallström’s “The HundredFoot Journey” and Matt Reeves’ follow up to the “Planet of the Apes” saga titled “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.”

Cameron Diaz made a couple of puff pieces with the lackluster romantic-comedy, “The Other Woman” and the epitome of mediocrity, “Sex Tape.”

For some unknown reason, nobody really saw Tom Cruise’s sci-fi epic “Edge of Tomorrow,” an exhausting watch that had him dying only to relive the same moment repeatedly.

He shared a nice rapport with co-star Emily Blunt, a woman who teaches him to harness the power that his character was given.

It worked because director Doug Liman knows how to handle action sequences so well, as he did with the first Jason Bourne entry, “The Bourne Identity.”

The kiddies were treated to a fun ride with “How to Train Your Dragon 2,” an entry that has had the main character of Hiccup (Jay Baruchel) meeting his mom. The same cannot be said, however, of the lackluster follow-up “Planes: Fire and Rescue.”

For a pair of fun food flicks, there was Jon Favreau’s “Chef” and Lasse Hallström’s “The Hundred-Foot Journey.” The first took place stateside while the other involved competition on foreign soil.

What was amazing were the smaller films that passed through, such as the singlecamera entry that was Steven Wright’s drama “Locke,” in which a driver, played by Thomas Hardy, travels down a British road to witness the birth of his mistresses’ baby. Nicolas Cage also starred in a pair of intense dramas with “Joe” and “Rage.”

The faith-sect tried to convert film patrons with “Heaven is For Real,” “God’s Not Dead,” “Son of God” and Darren Aronofsky’s epic bust titled “Noah.”

Movie-goers also got the chance to witness the downfall of Johnny Depp with the lackluster and uninvolving “Transcendence.”

Nobody even noticed that in “Godzilla,” the not-so-jolly green giant was actually the hero of the story. He was battling Mutos (Massive Unidentified Terrestrial Organisms), which just wanted to reproduce and bring about alien babies.

This year, however, saw the popularity resurgence of Kevin Costner, a matinee idol who used to put people in theater seats. Irony was played into this tale because he first played the title character in Kevin Reynolds lackluster “Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves” of 1991.

Superman’s Earth dad, Jonathan Kent in Zack Snyder’s “Man of Steal.” Irony was thrust even further into that story because Russell Crowe also played Superman’s his birth father on planet Krypton. He also played Robin Hood in Ridley Scott’s 2010 rendition of the story.

After helming one of the oddest trilogies ever with the “Before” series, Texas filmmaker Richard Linklater handled an odd concoction with “Boyhood,” a dramatic slice-of-life story following a young boy through his first days in college.

After a mediocre summer season, the fall will likely bring about the usual cavalcade of new flicks that will hopefully make the changing of the seasons more interesting for even the most fickle moviegoers.

Richland welcomes new basketball coach

Richland’s Athletic Department is welcoming a new basketball head coach, Jon Havens.

After the sudden departure of former head coach Bill Foy for personal reasons last semester, assistant coach Michael Gross led the Thunderducks for the rest of the season.

The Athletic Department announced the open position last spring.

“We had several good candidates and there were several that were really, really good,” Guy Simmons, athletic director, said.

“Coach Havens met all the criteria that we were looking for,” Simmons said.

Havens has extensive basketball and coaching experience. The last four years, he was the assistant coach at Northeastern State men’s basketball program in Tahlequah, Okla. Also, he has worked at UTPA (University of Texas Pan American) and Saint Edward’s University in Austin.

“He is energetic, he is young, he has a lot of basketball knowledge and he comes from a basketball family. We just felt that he would be a very good fit here at Richland College,” Simmons said.

In addition to his experience on the court, Havens brings academic know-how that helps with his coaching.

Havens graduated from UTSA (University of Texas at San Antonio) in 2004 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in history. He also received his Master of Science degree in

health and kinesiology in 2013 from Northeastern State University.

“He has a very positive attitude and I think he is going to be a very positive influence on

our young people, our student athletes,” Simmons said. “We are ready to rock and roll.”

“I think Havens is going to bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to the program,” Simmons said. “He is going to be able to stabilize our program and take us to the next level.” “[I’m] glad he is part of Richland College,” Gross said.

He and Havens have similar coaching styles and it is going to help the team and its performance on the court.

Although Havens knows that it will be a challenge to improve Richland’s team because last season the T-Ducks did well on the court, he wants to finish the good job that last year’s staff started. The T-Ducks won 25 out of 32 games last season.

“Changes are always good. Changes are always scary,” Havens said. “People in the sports profession are always looking for challenges.”

Although the first official practice for the basketball team is not until October, Havens started his job duties in July.

Havens said that although only seven players are returning, the new players have everything they need to go far this upcoming season.

Richland’s STEM program: It might be rocket science

“It is just a class. It is just numbers. It is just learning. It is just another class. If they put their thoughts on it, they overcome that fear,” STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) adviser Teresa Lynd said about the general taboo and fear about the science areas.

STEM is one of the programs that Richland and the other Dallas County Community Colleges offer to students who are interested in the different science areas.

“The STEM program is uniquely different because we serve students that are going to science, technology, engineering and math and we take personal interest in these students,” Lynd said.

STEM is a national program that offers encouragement and support to the next generations into the world of science. Any student of any school that has science areas can become a STEM member.

However, Richland College is the only institution in the district that has its own STEM studying center, according to Lynd.

Richland’s STEM advising team makes sure that all their students receive updates from the STEM institute about scholarship and internship opportunities at least twice a month.

“We work pretty closely with our students and we give the information that they need to make them successful in whatever area they are trying to go into,” Lynd said.

Lynd said that the STEM program is very

friendly with students. Any person who is interested in those areas is welcome to join and receive all the benefits.

Lynd said that any student can apply for the program. They can be international students, part-time or even undocumented students and still be eligible for STEM. “It doesn’t say anything that you have to be a U.S. citizen or U.S. resident. It just says that you have to have 3.0 GPA, you have to have at least 12 hours in the DCCCD and you must be majoring in one of the STEM areas,” Lynd said.

Last year, the STEM Institute gave scholarships to its students with a value of $110 per credit hour up to 12 hours, Lynd said.

Another of the big benefits for students is internships. Lynd said that last year the almost 300 Richland STEM program graduates had some kind of financial aid in their pockets for the University of Texas at Dallas or the University of Texas at Arlington.

Also, the ones who decided to get into the job market had excellent results.

Lynd used the example of a Richland graduate who currently works for Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas and another who is attending UT in Austin and earned an internship at Exxon Mobil.

In addition, the Richland STEM advising team makes sure to work closely with Girl Scouts and girls schools inviting students to join science classes.

Although the cultural and gender expectations have changed in the last decade, there is a significant difference between the number of women and men in the science areas.

Lynd said Richland has a Future Engineers Club, which last year had a female guest speaker who is an industrial engineer, the perfect example of the capacity of women in science.

Lynd emphasized that nobody should be afraid to take science courses, regardless of their gender.

Although Robin Williams seemed to have it all – fame, wealth and an Oscar - it wasn’t enough to keep him from ending his life.

Williams appears to have committed suicide Aug. 11 at his home in Tiburon, Calif. He was 63. Soon after his death, it was revealed that he was in the early stages of Parkinson’s disease.

Richland counselor Karen Cuttill described Williams as “amazing.”

“If you ask me to give a list of maybe 10 or so people that I wouldn’t mind having lunch with . . . Robin Williams might have been one of them. I admired him as an actor and as a comedian. I think he was a philanthropist also,” Cuttill said.

When Cuttill heard of Williams’ suicide, she thought that an illness – depression – had taken another life.

“It’s a medical condition,” Cuttill said.

“Depression is a very tragic illness. It’s an illness that hits people at many levels and unfortunately can be fatal. Many people probably don’t realize they’re depressed.”

The American Medical Association, as well as psychologists, classify depression as an illness, she said. It’s a biological disease which impacts our thoughts, our physical body and our actions.

Cuttill said that in our culture, there’s still a lot of shame concerning depression and that there has been a tendency in the past to not understand it as well as other mental health illnesses.

As far as Williams’ death, Cuttill said, “We should just look at it as this wonderful individual died from the outcome of an illness, very much similar if he had died from pancreatic cancer or from a brain tumor or any other illness.”

Cuttill said that depression doesn’t always mean that someone is thinking about killing themselves. It starts out with a loss of interest in activities, where people begin to withdraw

and drop off socially.

“People can be very depressed and not be suicidal,” she said. “Sometimes depression is caused by a life incident. We may feel depressed after we’ve lost a loved one, or maybe we’ve lost a job and we’re having trouble.”

The question of whether depression is inherited, Cuttill said, is “a real fine line.”

While we inherit genetics, which is a predisposition towards something, one could have a genetic predisposition towards the way your body chemistry works.

“You could have a genetic predisposition toward depression,” she said. “But that’s not all of it. Part of it is in our environment and the things that happen to us. Part of it is learned behavior. We learn how to respond to things, how to perceive things. We learn how to react to things.”

Cuttill said that human beings learn the most by observation. In that respect, we do inherit because of the way our parents do things. There could be a genetic component to depression.

“Everyone in your family could be absolutely, totally well balanced, totally happy and you could come up with depression,” she said. “Just because your family is depressed doesn’t mean you’ll be depressed. So, it’s not very simple. The treatment that gives the best response is actually exercise. Unfortunately, one of the symptoms of depression is a lack of energy. Some people can’t get out of bed. Some people just can’t do the fun stuff anymore. They just don’t have the energy.”

Cuttill said in cases such as this, people turn to anti-depressants, which are prescribed by a medical doctor or a psychiatrist and they taken them for a certain period of time.

Cuttill had some specific advice to people concerning depression.

“The most important thing is when we have a friend or loved one who seems to be depressed, ask them if they are thinking about suicide,” Cuttill said. “We don’t do this.

If you ask them, they probably will tell you, but most people, (chances are) they won’t tell you if you don’t ask. And, have some contact crises phones available – some places that you can call.”

Students can learn more about depression and anxiety and get some interactive training at: www.kognitocampus.com/student, Cuttill said. Or, they can call 972-238-3771 to reach the Richland counselors at the Lakeside Resources Center in El Paso Hall.

“Sometimes our family members don’t know how to support us well,” she said. If someone is feeling depressed or overwhelmed, there is free counseling for students, which is covered by student tuition. Richland counselors are available and all are licensed by the state of Texas. They can also give referrals to students who need more intensive care.”

According to the National Institutes of Mental Health, each year about 6.7 percent of U.S. adults experience major depressive disorder. Women are 70 percent more likely to experience depression in their lifetime. And, the average age of onset for major depression is 32.

what their field of study will be. It’s just a matter of signing up for the core classes, but our mystery student has given this a lot of thought. He is majoring in business.

Along with math and reading, he will be taking classes aimed at enhancing his knowledge of the business world. A staff member writes down the courses he wants and registers him. Now, aside from buying his books and paying for the classes, he’s ready to get started!

Anxiety, apprehension and fear are some of the feelings one might have preparing for the first day of school. After being guided through the OAR process by helpful school staff, we asked our subject, a former Rowlett senior, how he feels about his upcoming adventure,.

“I’m foremost excited to finish college.”

So, while he has a long way to go to finish college, he certainly has the right mindset going in.

The “first day of school” jitters start weeks before classes. Knowing what to do, when to enroll, where to go … it can all be very confusing, especially for new students. Often, we just don’t know if we’re doing it right.

In order to get inside the head of a freshman and understand what they may be going through, we have recruited a “mystery freshman” to share his first semester at Richland. In upcoming issues we will chronicle his individual experiences to see how his college career is progressing: WEEK 1: Orientation Having just completed a scavenger hunt to help get acquainted with the campus, our mystery student sits in front of a small laptop in a room full of other “newbs.” Advising report in hand, he chooses from a long list of courses for which he is eligible. Registration is the final and most important part of the Orientation Advisement Registration (OAR) process, which starts with games, introductions and a scavenger hunt, the last, he admits he “could have done without.” During registration, dozens of advisers patrol and assist as students go through eConnect’s online registration process.

The Starbucks cups are stacked and ready to be filled and served this Wednesday.

The buzz surrounding rumors of a Starbucks on campus has been as intense as a triple-shot espresso.

Adam Boynton, manager of the Richland College Bookstore & Café, said there will not be a “Starbucks-owned location” on campus.

There will be, however, a Starbucks presence.

The Café will replace Jittery Joe’s. Starbucks-trained baristas will serve Starbucks “coffees, espressos and teas” found at Starbucks locations. The beverage menu is being totally revamped following the same Starbucks recipes customers have come to depend on for their coffee creavings.

All other food will remain the same.

The café will not accept Starbucks Gift Cards and coupons but will continue to accept Bookstore gift cards Boynton said, “Starbucks brings with it national recognition, expertise in the coffee market … and exceptional quality.”

The revamped Café will be open for business on Wednesday.
