Richland students Daniel Cervantes, 21, and Reagan Chandler, 18, both art majors, held their first art exhibition, titled “Thanks for Existing,” at the Haley Henman Art Gallery located within the ArtSpace at Metropolitan Press in Dallas.

The exhibit ran from April 1-25.

Cervantes and Chandler met in professor Brenda McKinney’s drawing II class where they discovered they shared very similar tastes in art, which led to their joint exhibition. It proved to be a match made in art heaven.

Each artist sold three pieces at the opening reception held on April 8. Cervantes has subsequently sold a fourth piece.

Cervantes and Chandler said they are especially thankful for McKinney’s help in arranging for the venue, as well as her guidance before and during their inaugural exhibit.

McKinney acted as curator for the talented pair’s show.

Cervantes cites movies as a major source of inspiration. He said, “I would hope to do something more with my art … at some point I would like to create a short film of some sort.”

Chandler draws inspiration from the people around her, particularly her mother.

“Since she is a single parent, she has taught me to take each day at a time and to work hard,” she said. “She is a hairstylist so most of my pieces deal with hair.”

Nothing stirs the depths of the soul like the sound of human voices raised in song.

Choral singing is the epitome of teamwork, the essence of cooperation and collaboration. When done well under masterful and sensitive direction, no one set of vocal cords ever surpasses the rest, for all are blended into a unification that creates a new and unique resonance.

To an enchanted observer like this one, the faces of the singers merge as well into a single image, a commonality of human eyes, noses and mouths, which merely substitute the many for the symbolic one. Perfect professional performances can be that powerful.

And what went on in Fannin Hall at noon on April 22 certainly was.

Leading off the three choral groups were the RichMen, eight smiling and enthusiastic guys directed by Dr. Michael Crawford.

Their first presentation, “I’ll Fly Away”

by Albert Brumley, was a happy piece that put the audience in a festive mood only to be followed by Aaron Copeland’s “ChingA-Ring-Chaw,” which was an even livelier toe-tapper. Their third offering was a clever arrangement of the classic spiritual, “Joshua Fit the Battle,” by the ensemble’s own Alex Gonzales. Then the group ended with a choral adaptation of Meredith Wilson’s popular “Seventy-Six Trombones” from “The Music Man.” All four pieces were sung without the aid of music, and it was inspiring to see that several of the fellows were senior citizens who were obviously not enrolled as music majors, but rather were there for the sheer pleasure of community singing.

Next on the program was the Gospel Choir directed by the highly talented and spirited Boriana Savova. This was a nonet of lofty voices, three male and six female,

attached to weaving and swaying bodies that added a bit of pleasing physical motion to the pulse of the tunes they offered.

As with the RichMen, the overall emotion emanating from the stage was predominately zeal, but this time it was focused on spiritual celebration and praise. Accompanied not only by a piano, but also by a flute, drums and a guitar, the choir sang three numbers ranging from traditional gospel to a “Jewish Messianic Medley.” In the latter, as promised by the director in her introductory remarks, the group actually did “bring a little of the Middle East” to the audience.

Crawford returned to the podium to conclude the program by leading the 41-member Chamber Singers in four pieces. The first was a sampling of two favorite movements from “Carmina Burana” by Carl Orff, which the ensemble recently performed with the Irving Symphony. This intricate combination of complex rhythms and challenging diction was delivered flawlessly.

Next was the solemn and moving “O Magnum Mysterium” by Tomas Luis de Victoria.

This was followed by the short, but clever, “Animal Crackers,” a three-part piece by Eric Whitacre. Last was “Angel Band, No. 2” from “Heavenly Home: Three American Songs,” arranged by Shawn Kirchner.

During its performance, the singers seamlessly rearranged themselves three times on the risers by quietly assuming new spots as the music progressed. These intriguing occurrences detracted in no way from the aural mood and even lent an interesting visual quality of periodic adjustment to the presentation.

Crawford afterward disclaimed all credit for inventing this repositioning feature, stating that he’d seen it done at a recent statewide choral conclave. No matter. Original or not, Crawford’s rare skill at bringing together a total program like the one on Tuesday was, and is, universally acknowledged and sincerely admired.

The Richland campus will be invaded by an assortment of colorful creatures hopping, crawling and flying around from April 30 through May 4. They’ll all participate in the drama department’s production of “A Year with Frog and Toad,” a children’s musical written and illustrated by Arnold Lobel, with music by brothers Robert and Willie Reale.

Richland drama professor and director Gregory Lush said 10 drama students make up the cast and all but one are in his acting classes. All of the actors will sing and dance in the show.

Mason Bowling, 10, son of music director Vonda Bowling, is also in the cast and is a fifth grader at Dorsey Elementary School in Garland. His professional acting debut was with Lush in the “Assassins” at Theatre Three earlier this year.

The plot of “Frog and Toad” concerns two great friends who are amicable amphibians with contrasting personalities – the cheerful, popular Frog and the rather grumpy Toad.

Together, they share life’s experiences through the four seasons.

The musical is based on the “Frog and Toad” children’s stories written in the 1970s by Lobel. His books inspired a Broadway musical commissioned by Lobel’s daughter in 2003 and ran briefly in 2003.

“There isn’t a traditional plot,” Lush said.

“There’s a series of episodes. They [Frog and Toad] do everything together.”

Lush said the musical is cute as well as fun-

ny. The other actors will be playing a variety of animals – lizards, birds, mice, turtles, squirrels, moles, snails and a trio of birds.

“The Frog is more positive and upbeat about everything, while the toad has a little more trouble getting through the day,” Lush said.

Lush said the staging is “boulevard style,” where the seating is on two sides and the action takes place in the middle.

“We have two revolves so the houses can spin around,” Lush said. “Each house spins around. It has been a real challenge because it’s almost like being in the round.”

Lush said that this type of staging has been great for the kids (actors) to work on because it’s not something they’re used to.

“There’s some really fun choreography,” Lush said. “There is no hopping. There’s Charleston-type dancing. All of the animals participate.”

Lush said the musical is best suited to ages 4 to 8.

“The music is so sweet that I think everybody will enjoy it,” he said.

Those in the cast are: Kevin Dang as the Frog, Cody Samples as the Toad and as the assortment of other animals: Ryan Nelson, Harley Gonzales, Bridget Condra, Bismark Quintanilla, Zack Jones, Ashley Mullings and Madison Rey. The musical will run at 7:30 p.m. April 30 through May 3 in the Arena Theater in Fannin Hall. There will be two matinee performances at 2:30 p.m. May 3-4 as well. It’s free and open to the public. The final trailer is out for “The Amazing Spider-Man 2,” the much-anticipated sequel, giving true believers a glimpse into what Sony has in store for their franchise character.

Based on that trailer, it’s safe to say that “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” is pulling out all the stops now that the burden of re-establishing the characters and the origin is over with.

Many people preferred the reboot over the Sam Raimi trilogy mainly because fanboys considered it true to the comics in the sense that the movie suggested Peter Parker’s parents’ mysterious plane crash was orchestrated by Oscorp (an event that was not even mentioned in the original trilogy) and the fact that Gwen Stacy was Peter’s first love.

Going forward, Peter is graduating with his genius valedictorian girlfriend Gwen (adorably played by Emma Stone). Gwen gets a scholarship offer to go to school in England, which leads to a possible breakup, an alternative ending to their relationship as opposed to killing her off like Marvel did in the comics.

Not only that, but Peter is reunited with childhood friend Harry Osborn (played this time by Dane Dehaan) after a decade apart.

Unaware of the truth behind Peter’s claim that he has been “web designing” in his free

time, Harry points out that Oscorp has been keeping Peter under surveillance.

This film appears to essentially be doing what the third Raimi “Spider-Man” movie tried to do, using a trifecta of super-powered villainy for Peter to worry about.

Only this time, it looks like the story is airtight.

The first action scene involves an Adidas tracksuit-clad Russian mobster by the name of Aleksei Sytsevich who is trying to steal a radioactive isotope from Oscorp.

Later in the movie, this gentleman, who is shooting some sort of machine gun at Spidey, will trade in the firearm for some real heavy artillery in the form of a Rhino-themed Oscorp battle suit. Max Dillon (played by Jamie Foxx) is an Oscorp employee who accidently becomes a living spark plug after bumbling and tumbling in the lab. (He even falls into a tank full of electric eels and that pretty much seals the deal.)

To top off the terrifying trio lineup is none other than Harry Osborn who uses some chemical to enhance his strength and dons a green battle suit and a goblin glider for a new generation.

Any devout Spidey fan who has been following the rumors can see where this is going. They even showed the Vulture’s wings and Doc Ock’s tentacles in the first full trailer. Rumors were eventually confirmed in a way that no one saw coming. The Sinister Six will get their own movie. Not only that, but Sony also has a Venom movie in the works.

After the misfire that was last summer’s “The Lone Ranger,” he shoots blanks again with “Transcendence.” This is yet another flick that looked intriguing on paper with an end result that crashes into the doldrums detour. Do not pass go. Do not collect $200.

Essentially, the movie is about how technology can help and benefit our planet. Depp’s Will Caster is a technological genius, one who does not frown upon trying to make an obscure idea a reality. His main goal is to incorporate artificial intelligence into the day-to-day world of life here on Earth.

In his future, the world would run more smoothly, and peace would reign throughout the planet. Gigabytes and technological know-how are incorporated throughout the storyline.

He holds his wife, Evelyn (Rebecca Hall, “The Town” and “Iron Man 3”), close to his side since the pair share an uncanny bond that holds them together. The duo also enjoy a close rapport with friend and colleague Max Waters (Paul Bettany of “A Beautiful Mind” and “The DaVinci Code”) who aids them with

the artificial intelligence dynamics of their project.

What was also cool was when a construction worker named Martin (Clifton Collins Jr.) carried hefty construction items with his hand since normally he would have used a forklift.

First-time director Wally Pfister knows what he is doing with the camera. After all, he was the cinematographer on all of Christopher Nolan’s movies starting with 2001’s “Memento.” The pacing is a little bit slow at times, but when he wants to, Pfister revs up the tempo to keep the audience’s attention.

Pfister won an Oscar for the photography with “Inception.” (2010).

Also key to the story is Morgan Freeman’s Joseph Tagger, an ally of Evelyn who heeds her warning to flee as soon as possible. He knows something is rotten in Denmark, rather the small town she is in.

What should have been intriguing and phenomenal in “Transcendence” misses the mark altogether for a movie that is just plain average.

As I’ve said in the past, it strikes me as a boot to the head or a sucker punch to the gut when the trailer showed so much promise only to feel so unfulfilled at movie’s end.

Dallas County has the state’s highest HIV infection rate, according to the latest statistics from the Texas Department of State Health Services.

The Legacy Grace Project, a national organization that supports HIV-positive women, hosted PositiviTEA, an afternoon tea and fashion show fundraiser, at the Royal Sixty in the Dallas Design District Sunday, April 6.

El Centro students designed the fashion collections modeled by women living with HIV and AIDS. They also held a silent auction to showcase their program and raise money for the cause.

“It’s a way of us just reaching out to the community, helping a great cause and also just being visible in the community,” El Centro fashion marketing instructor Kevin Willoughby said.

“I thought it was fantastic. Not only did we have women who live with HIV and AIDS modeling, but I thought that the collection, which used the trending Pantone color palette … just had incredibly vibrant colors. And, I thought, as a visual metaphor, it was really inspirational because here are these women that don’t let their struggle with HIV define them. Instead, they harness that for activism, education and of course their piece that they did about being empowered in being an HIV/ AIDS advocate. I just thought that the bold bursts of color was such a great visual compliment to the boldness of these women, and I thought it was a beautiful pairing, if you will.”

One of the advocates, Diane Reeve, wants to raise awareness that “HIV doesn’t fit any profile.” Reeve thought she was being responsible until she discovered her boyfriend of four years had infected her and several other women while they were together.

“I didn’t expect someone who was tall, dark and handsome, who had a good job, who was charming and well-spoken to give me AIDS,” Reeve said. “I was caught off guard. So, my message to you today is don’t be. … Be aware, and protect yourself.”

As I stand in the doorway and watch my son hurry off to school full of excitement, a sense of melancholy hits me like a tidal wave.

I close the front door and the walls of my home feel as if they are closing in I whisper to myself, “It’s time for me to get it together.”

For years friends and family suggested I go back to school and for years I would utter the same five words: “I don’t have the time.” A typical Monday morning sitting at my desk at work listening to an individual on the phone complaining and whining like a 2 year old, the one thought that stays in my mind, “Today is the day to get rich or die trying.”

For me, college was an ocean of possibilities and opportunities, and all I needed to do was toss out a net to find the right major and classes. I looked for a course that would offer the biggest payout plus allow my creativity to be the driving force, so I selected business marketing as my major. It had been two decades since I’d been in school, let alone a classroom and the very thought of it made me second guess going back to school. Thank goodness we live in the Internet age where online classes are offered for higher education. My first semester, I enrolled in an online class for every class and each day. I would rush home to complete my homework. It was a challenge at first; however, that challenge turned into a thirst for knowledge and a desire to broaden my mental horizon.

During my second semester, the day finally came when I had to attend a class on campus.

The idea of being a 40-year-old freshman sitting in a classroom surrounded by classmates half my age had me feeling like a lone survivor of a Zombie apocalypse. On the first day of class, trying to beat that Green Mile walk into the classroom with all eyes on me, I arrived 15 minutes early. To my very pleasant surprise, by the end of class, I had made several friends both my age and 20 years younger than me, plus the teacher was amazing. As a 40-year-old freshman, I began to feel like a young adult venturing out into the real world for the first time. Each time I went to campus, my age factor decreased and I began to make college life my own.

One of my favorite movie quotes is, “Life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re gonna get" (“Forrest Gump”).

My educational journey began with a career change for a better income. When I decided to attend college, I really didn’t know what I would get from going back to school, because somewhere down the path of my educational journey, my focus changed. The thought that stayed constant with me was, “Today is the day to gain knowledge or die trying.” Going back to school has fanned the flames of my passion for creativity and increased my desire to learn. Being a 40-year-old freshman at Richland College transformed my melancholy world into something vibrant and it has given me new dreams, goals and energy.

Don’t let age be an obstacle in your life or an excuse for not pursuing a higher education. It’s never too late to go back to school and invest in yourself. Education is the key that can unlock your potential and make your dreams a reality.

‘Life is the best thing that’s ever been invented’ Gabriel Garcia Márquez is immortalized through his writing Staff Writer

Gabriel Garcia Márquez, 1982 Nobel Prize in Literature winner, died April 17 at the age of 87.

Gabo, as Garcia was known in Latin America, was born in Aracataca, Colombia, in 1927.

Garcia was a successful novelist, shortstory writer, screenwriter and journalist. He was one of the most prolific writers of the 20th century.

His literary style is known as magic realism. Garcia Márquez combined magical elements in his novels, which were based in his childhood and hometown.

According to CNN.com, on the day of Garcia’s death, Juan Marquez Santos, president of Colombia, ordered three days of national mourning and flags were lowered to half-staff in his country.

“Giants never die,” Santos said in a tweet. “I feel Latin American from whatever country, but I have never renounced the nostalgia of my homeland: Aracataca, to which I returned one day and discovered that between reality and nostalgia was the raw material for my work,” reads a mural

Richland’s Night at the Apollo showcase Everyone is welcome to come to the Apollo Talent Showcase from 7 to 10 p.m. Friday, May 2, in the Richland cafeteria.

The evening promises some special guest performers, a celebrity judge, studio time, food and drinks and three raffles for the audience.

The K104 Street Team will also attend. Attendees are encouraged to bring canned food for the North Texas Food Bank. Cash donations will be accepted at the event, which is sponsored by the Male Initiative.

Shamont Small, 32, organizer of the Apollo Talent Showcase, invites everyone to tune in to his radio show, “Dubbess Radio Eva.” The show airs on Tuesdays and Thursdays from noon to 1 p.m. and on Fridays from noon to 2 p.m.

“It’s a talent show exposing talent for Richland and Dallas,” Small said. “It’s giving students a platform to be heard and seen. It gives the school a name.”

Small said that they are trying to elevate the media department to a higher platform. The radio show is also available on Ustream.com.

This is Small’s first semester at Richland, but he’ll be back in the fall.

“I’m trying to make this an annual thing,” he said.

Garcia’s books were translated into dozens of languages. He has several best sellers.

However, some of the most recognized titles are: “One Hundred Years of Solitude,” “Chronicle of a Death Foretold,” “Love in the Time of Cholera,” novel of which a movie was made recently, “No One Writes to the Colonel,” and “Memories of My Melancholy Whores.”

One of Garcia’s biggest fans is former President Bill Clinton, who commented the day Garcia passed away.

“I was saddened to learn of passing of Gabriel García Márquez,” he said in a statement.

“From the time I read ‘One Hundred Years of Solitude’ more than 40 years ago, I was always amazed by his unique gifts of imagination, clarity of thought and emotional honesty.

He captured the pain and joy of our common humanity in settings both real and magical” (CNN.com).

Garcia stated several times that he was inspired by his own life and reality.

“Life itself is the greatest source of inspiration,” he said. “I see dreams as part of life in general, but reality is much richer.

“But maybe,” he added, “I just have very poor dreams.”

Richland’s baseball team got blown out by the Brookhaven Bears, 14-2 on Friday.

Although the Thunderducks never gave up trying to come back, the Bears dominated the game.

Despite this loss, the T-Ducks have had a good season. They are trying to improve their level of play. The Thunderducks have played 48 games and won 28.

At press time, the Thunderducks were scheduled to play a doubleheader Saturday against LeTourneau JV in Longview. Also, the team was scheduled to play against Texas Wesleyan JV in Fort Worth April 28. The next home game of the Thunderducks will be Friday May 2 against Cedar Valley at 2 p.m.

The Thunderducks hope to bounce back and return better than ever because there are only three more regular-season games before the playoffs.

This year the national tournament will be held May 24 through May 30 in Tyler.
