Apathy is our real enemy

Dylan Andrew Quick was a 20-year-old student. He attended Lone Star College in Cypress (Surburbon Houston). He probably skipped a class now and then. He may sometimes have left work to the last minute. He was a student, like any of us, except that he also went on a stabbing spree that injured 14 other students.

When we see a headline like “At least 14 wounded in mass stabbing on campus,” we students make the necessary gasps of shock and somberly shake our heads. We mutter to each other, “This shouldn’t happen. Something needs to change,” while still shaking our heads somberly. Then we move on because unconsciously we tell ourselves, “This will never happen to us.”

This is a fundamental problem with the mentality of many of us. When we say somebody should do something, we mean somebody else should do something.

The aforementioned mindset coupled with our false sense of security are a dangerous combination. The students at Lone Star certainly didn’t think that tragedy would happen to them, until it did.

This is not a stand for or against gun control.

This is not a stand condoning or condemning safety levels on campus. This is an outcry for us as students to care. We do not advocate for or against gun control, but we want students to make an effort to learn about the issue. In the barest form, take a stand on issues that affect us as students.

It’s a troubling paradox we suffer from. We believe our opinions matter. We will spend hours on YouTube and Facebook defending our words, but when it comes to real life, we feel powerless.

A common response from students when

asked to take a stand is that “my voice won’t make a difference,” or “things will never change.” We fuel a self-fulfilling prophecy where nothing changes because we do nothing, and we do nothing because nothing changes.

Maybe we are willing to fight for our opinions on the latest PSY single “Gentlemen” because it’s not the important stuff.

Maybe we are afraid of actually accomplishing something by taking a stand on a real issue.

Issues like concealed carry that will affect us on campus. By adressing them and by speaking about it, it immediatly becomes

more real. It becomes something that could happen to us and not something that happens to other people.

Apathy goes hand in hand with a lack of information. If we don’t care, then we don’t educate ourselves about what’s going on. If we don’t have the information, then we become sheep, merely repeating what other people believe, accepting what other people say the story is.

The first step is caring; as students, care about what’s going on at your campus. Don’t treat your campus as a set of buildings where you only have classes.

Get involved. Treat it as a community; most, if not all, campuses have community-building activities engineered to promote unity.

Understandably, some people don’t have time to always participate, but it doesn’t cost you anything to get informed.

Everyone thinks incidents like this will never happen at their campus or to them, until it does.

Once recovered from the deliciously bloated holiday feasts, I found the typical spare tire around my waist had gotten a little out of control: the spare had formed a spare.

At times like these, it would certainly be nice to be able to bust a gut, but convenience tends to be a bit of an issue.

Since the semester is coming to a close and summer is approaching, even being too busy with school is not a plausible excuse.

Fitness options are available. For the frugal spender, the campus has a gym membership available to any student for $20 a month. This will give you access to a range

of standard, reliable workout equipment.

All you need to do is pay at the Continuing Education Department. The only hang up is the membership works on a cycle beginning with the first of the month.

If you have a little more money to burn, L.A. Fitness offers a monthly student discount that generally keeps the price under $50 a month. The closest location is 1451 East Beltline, a mere four miles away from the school. There, you will find a swimming pool, raquetball courts, yoga and Zumba classes, and a sectionalized selection of machines for targeting your six main muscle groups. You can also get professional advice if you like, for a fee of course.

I’m giving this fitness thing a shot and hope you do the same. To our health.

“We started slow, but we’ve [sic] started to play much better recently,” said Richland baseball head coach Guy Simmons.

At press time, the Thunderducks’ season record stood at 10-11, including wining the three last games.

Simmons said that the team has improved its game technique enough to be in a positin to get into the playoffs.

In addition, the baseball team has a new assistant coach this year. Twenty-five year-old Garret Carruth is in his first year coaching at the college level.

Carruth said the team has worked hard to strengthen its weak points.“We have the talent, we just have to have the confidence and we

will be OK.” Simmons is sure of the success of the team and is aware that Richland competes with tough teams, “We are equal; no one is better than another,” he said.

He also noted that the Eastfield team is very strong and the Thunderducks have to be ready for their next encounter with them.

Although the team roster is almost full, Carruth said he is ready for his first recruiting season. He said that if anyone is interested in being part of the team, they are more than welcome to try out. However, Curreth emphasized that the coaching staff is looking for high level baseball players, but also for good leaders who care about their grades and are gentleman on and off the baseball field.

Richard Feldman: Commentary on America, its politics and its guns Staff Writer

Richard Feldman, president of the Independent Gun Owners Association, told a Richland audience that our current gun-policy debate hinges on the issues of definition and trust. He offered an overview of the state of American politics during a Thursday campus visit.

Feldman worked for years as a policy director for the National Rifle Association and a gun lobbyist. He tends to differ from the mainline gun rights platform with his views on background checks and the role that drug policy plays in the problem of violence. He is still very active in politics as a consultant and public speaker, and has an intimate view of how policy and politics interact in Washington.

Feldman began by pointing out how the two sides of gun policy often fail to define their terms.

“If half the room interprets gun control to mean one thing, gun violence control, and the other half of the room interprets the words gun control to mean making it harder and harder for legitimate citizens to obtain guns, we’re going to have a food fight, but we’re not even talking about the same thing. …We talk as though we’re talking about the same subject but in fact we are the quintessential two ships in the night, speaking right past each other.”

Feldman said that the debate should be organized not around guns, but whose hands those guns are in. Put it in these terms and “you will find almost universality and agree-

If they don’t trust me, why should I trust them?’ …

He also stated that the larger problem to address was the issue of 500,00 stolen firearms every year in the U.S. Feldman said that he would like to see the substance of the Manchin-Toomey bill reintroduced at some point.

“It will be back. And next time it’s back it’s not going to be part of the debate with all this anti-gun fervor. I will have it back in the debate in a pro-gun context where it makes sense and I’ll have all the pro-gun people supporting it. … We will call it the Gun Show Preservation and Protection Act of 2015. Then you’ll see (Sen. Dianne Feinstein) voting against exactly what she voted for yesterday…”

Feldman said that “we don’t function in this country like the adults we want to be viewed as. We do a very poor job in America at separating the message from the messenger. Does it really matter if Barack Obama says 1 plus 1 equals 2 or Wayne LaPierre says it? They’d both be right. That’s progress, that’s good. To be able to pick and choose that your opponent may actually be right some of the time and your ally may be wrong some of the time.

That’s what adults do. That’s what we need to become in this country to move our agendas forward and start acting like intelligent sophisticated citizens.”

DCCCD talks concealed handgun bill REBECCA BANKS Editor-in-Chief

Texas has been called a “gun state.” Will Richland College become a “gun campus” in the near future?

“Several different gun bills have been filed this legislative session to allow concealed handgun license holders to carry their handguns on a college campus,” said Justin Lonon, vice chancellor, public and governmental affairs for the Dallas County Community College District (DCCCD).

He said bill that is currently in the Texas legislatiure will permit individuals with a concealed handgun license the option to carry on campus.

“Texas is a ‘gun state.’ At the state capitol there is a place where if you have a concealed

handgun license you don’t have to go through the metal detectors, you just swipe your license and you can carry your gun into the capitol,” Lonon said at a chancellor’s meeting with student journalists April 15.

According to the Associated Press, a Texas House committee voted to allow individuals who have a handgun license to carry guns on campus. The House Homeland Security and Public Safety Committee presented the bill to the full House on a 7-1 vote on April 11.

“The legislation has been specifically written so that no local governing board can opt out of it. What we have argued is that if you are going to have these bills, allow local control options.

Allow our Board of Trustees to make the determination whether it is OK for any gun to be carried on our campuses,” said Lonon.

Lonon also stated that some of the DCCCD board members will offer floor amendments

to the bill specifically providing for local decisions on allowing concealed handguns on campus.

“I’m not in favor of this at all. I think it will be very problematic and very challenging, said Dr. Kay Eggleston Richland College president “We know that any of our institutions can be impacted like Houston this past week.”

Eggleston noted that situations regarding a threat on a campus are very chaotic, “people running every direction, you don’t know what is happening and it’s hard to know who the suspects are and who are the innocent bystanders. So in that situation I think the potential for greater harm outweighs the greater good.”

Dr. Jean Conway, president at Eastfield College, said her campus had a lockdown earlier this semester.

“When it happens people are trying to scatter and go and the police are coming. You’re

not quite sure who the perpetrator is or perpetrators are. All you know is that you want to be safe,” said Conway.

MOVIE

AND IT'S GOING, GOING … Gone RICKY MILLER Staff Writer

The inspirational sports movie has been run into the ground, but Brian Helgeland’s “42” avoids all the rampant clichés that abound the genre.

This movie amazes from start to finish.

Part of that rests in the hands of Helgeland, a writer-director who gave audiences amazing stories with the ridiculous but fun “A Knight’s Tale” as well as the Mel Gibson anitihero tale, “Payback.”

Even the somewhat selective Harrison Ford gives a less-than-subtle turn as the Brooklyn Dodgers general manager Branch Rickey. His justification for bringing in Robinson, the first-ever AfricanAmerican player in the Major Leagues, stems from a mistake he made in his past.

Newcomer Chadwick Boseman fits the bill as Robinson, showing the audience his genuine emotions in each scene. He shares an impressive rapport with everyone

involved, especially with his onscreen wife, Rachel (Nicole Behaire, “Shame”).

Also key to the story is his friendship with Lucas Black’s (“Sling Blade,” “Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift”) Pee Wee Reese, a teammate who does not take sides with the general public.

Besides the general public throwing slurs in his direction, Robinson also receives them from a competing manager in Ben Chapman (Alan Tudyck, “A Knight’s Tale,” “Serenity”), who works for the Philadelphia Phillies.

Of note is the significance of Robinson’s number, the “42” of the title, because commissioner Bud Selig retired that number in 1997.

The drama is well placed throughout this entire biopic, never delving into oversentimentality or manipulation by the numbers.

Aiming to defy the norm Avery A. Rains Staff Writer

"Defiance" is a recently released game

by Trion Worlds that is boasting a new feature for gaming media as a whole.

That is, a TV show that isn't developed simply because a game is successful (or vice versa), but instead exists alongside the game.

This is the first time this has been attempted, and with the show's premiere only two weeks after the release of the game, there is still a lot of speculation about how well Trion will be able to pull off something this big.

As of now, promises of interaction between show and game have been made, but being this early on in the release of both, it is still not apparent what Trion is planning.

A few examples of what has been promised so far include characters from the show appearing in the game and returning to the show later, bosses that go undefeated in the game appearing in the show and planet-changing features, such as terraforming happening in both the show and the game simultaneously.

Of course Trion Worlds is smart enough not to have any forced conjunction between the game and show, as this could prove

disastrous. In any media it is a bad idea to restrict your audience any more than you have to, and creating a game and show that would force the participant to do both in order to keep up with plot would be no different.

Thankfully, you will find no such thing here. Trion Worlds has assured us many times that both the show and the game are stand-alone features. However, the company continues to emphasize that anyone who keeps up with both the game and the show will not be disappointed.

That being said, "Defiance" is still a game, and one venturing on a path muchless taken than most, even when disregarding the show. This game's genre can be classified under the label MMOTPS or Massive Multiplayer Online Third Person Shooter and, while it certainly is not the first of its kind, MMO shooters are still a rather unexplored genre in themselves.

Whether it's the first-person shooter or the third-person shooter, MMO titles are normally reserved more for the role-playing game (RPG) genre, such as "World of Warcraft."

Then again, that did not stop Trion Worlds from accepting the challenge to defy the norm once more. Most MMO shooters are like giant shootouts with varying degrees of objectives that last forever. A good example of this is a free-to-play game

titled "Planetside 2," which pretty much matches that description to the letter.

"Defiance," on the other hand, keeps more to the RPG side of things than the usual shooter, giving quests, bosses and gear pick-ups rather than the usual point-and-shoot experience.

In the end this all can end up being either good or bad depending on how Trion handles things. However, high hopes are had by all as we wait and see where things go from here.

Richland presents 23rd Peace Pole SAYAKO METOKI Staff Writer

Richland College’s 23rd Annual Peace Pole planting took place Wednesday as part of the Intercultural Festival. It started with a dance celebrating the common needs of humanity within a diverse context, narrated with the hope for the world peace by Richland Dance Group.

“May Peace Prevail on Earth” is the message written in English and three other languages on each side. In this 23rd pole, located east of the Fannin Performance Hall breezeway, Guarani, Hawaiian, Uzbek and English are presented. As professors, students and a community member represented each language, they placed soil at the pole’s base.

Student Jamine Erben, who represented Guarani, said that he volunteered to have a mark of his language where he is currently studying.

“May Peace Prevail on Earth” in Guarani is an expression of deep feeling and memory to him. He translates it as “have heart calm with you all.”

Student Vasila Kasimova, who represented Uzbek, said that she was happy to be able to represent her country and wish the world peace in her language.

The audience followed by offering a moment of moment of silence.

In a closing speech, professor Cynthia Miller expressed a strong belief in peace that

can influence others. Students held the names of the countries joining the peace parade.

They were led by the JK Wong Kung Fu Tai Chi group with Chinese lion and instruments.

Nowadays it is difficult to keep tabs on fad diets and to avoid the never-ending list of unhealthy foods when trying to trim down the waistline.

There are a few helpful steps that can improve a healthy diet without focusing on all of the foods that are on the “do not eat” list or a measuring cup.

One popular method to cut calories is to calculate the amount of calories consumed in each meal. That could be a hassle for some.

“The easiest way to cut calories is to cut your portion size in half or at least by a third,” Richland College physical education instructor Bill Neal said.

It’s common to focus more on the foods that are unhealthy, but Neal has a simpler plan which includes three minisize meals.

“A mini-size meal would be the size of your fist,” Neal said. “It should contain a protein and a carbohydrate.”

Protein can be found in quantities of meat and fish. Carbohydrates are

commonly found in raw or lightly cooked vegetables, fresh fruits, nuts and seeds.

“Have a protein snack mid-morning and a carbohydrate snack mid-afternoon,” Neal said.

“You have to keep food in the system and keep your metabolic rate going.”

For strong bones, milk is commonly associated as a source of calcium, but it is not a common drink for those with allergies.

“Milk is a marketing bonanza,” Neal said. “Most people are allergic to milk.

Stop drinking it for a week and start back up and within 15 minutes your nose will start running.”

It is difficult for those with allergies to consume milk, but there is a surprising substitute.

“There is more calcium in a helping of broccoli than a gallon of milk,” Neal said.

The importance of keeping a healthy lifestyle is more than the number on the scale.

“A scale tells you nothing about what you should weigh,” Neal said. “How your clothes fit and how you look in the mirror are the best signs.”

How to keep your Facebook private Majid Abdel-Raziq Staff Writer

For those who believe their Facebook activity is private, it may be time to check again.

After a Facebook update in December, users have found that some or all of their privacy settings were reset. Furthermore, Facebook has come up with a new search engine called the Facebook Graph that will allow users to search through describing an activity or anything that a friend or public user may have on their account.

Facebook reveals everything about you, especially if everything about you is public. Discourage unwanted attention. If you allow your information to be public, then all of your information could be accessible by a single search.

Imagine stating something ordinary like, “I visit my grandmother every Friday night."

Those few words may result in a robbery because somebody near you may be looking for a quick buck. This may seem absurd but the best advice is always “better to be safe than sorry.”

Scot McClain, math coordinator at the Richland Learning Center, was frustrated with how privacy works on Facebook. The problem for him is that there are so many different settings

to take into account because he links the apps and games he uses to his Facebook page.

First, he would have to categorize all the different “friends” on Facebook into family, acquaintances, friends and close friends. Then, he would have to customize who can access his information for each app. He said that he makes sure he is safe by not posting anything he wouldn’t want the public to know, but he also restricts most posting to only friends and family.

Similarly, Skyler Thomas, a second-year Richland student, said he feels that Facebook “friendship” should be just that -- social interaction exclusively between friends. Therefore, most of his information was kept private. Or so he thought. In the middle of our conversation about privacy issues, he told me it had been more than a few months since he had checked his privacy settings. After I notified him that Facebook was updated several months earlier, he checked his account. Sure enough, we found that settings he recalled restricting were public.

Facebook advises users to check their privacy settings, especially after an update they say made privacy more accessible.

Whether or not you had restricted settings, now is the time to heed Thomas’ example. Protect yourself for your sake.

Privacy Settings 1. Sign in 2. Click over the lock icon in the top right corner to go to privacy settings.

3. Choose “see more settings.”

4. For the section “Who can see my stuff ?”

5. Select friends for “Who can see your future posts?”

6. Under that it says, in small letters, “Limit the audience for posts you’ve shared with friends of friends or friends: make sure you click limit and confirm that you want your old posts to be limited to friends?

7. You may also want to review your activity log to unlike or delete any past posts reflecting something unwanted. Remember, past activity could also come up in a friend’s Graph search later on.

8. The next step is to return to the privacy page by following step 2 and look at the “Who can look me up ...” section (This is by far the most necessary step.)

9. Click on the edit section: Choose either friends of friends or just friends if you only want friends to look you up using that information. This will protect your address and phone number from unwanted attention.

10. Click on edit for “Do you want other search engines to link to your timeline?”

11. Edit and uncheck the box: You will receive a warning that says this will make it harder for your friends to find you.

12. Please, do not falter. Click on “Confirm.”

13. Now, click on “Timeline and Tagging” on the left column.

Although it is not essential to limit those who can add things to your timeline, you should consider reviewing those posts before they appear. Be sure to limit who can see “posts you’ve been tagged in” or who can see what your friends post on your timeline.Reviewing what tags on your posts and who can see posts you are tagged in is essential.

14. Finally, take pleasure that your information is in the hands of only the people you trust with it.

RLC student scholarships available JOYCE JACKSON Copy Editor

One $400 scholarship for fall and another for spring 2014 is available for one student per semester.

The Kim Holley Memorial Scholarship is restricted to Richland students who are enrolled in a minimum of six credit hours with an established 2.5 GPA. Holley was a former student and employee until she died of cancer in March 2000. She was recognized as an Outstanding Employee of the Month in November 1991 and nominated for Professional Support Staff Employee of the Year in 2000.

Janet James, executive assistant to the president, said Holley was a colleague, an executive secretary to former president Dr. Steve Mittelstet.

“I worked with her. She started as a student, then became a student assistant,” James said.

“She just epitomized servant leadership. She treated everybody who came to her as if they were the most important person in the world.”

James said Holley had a really wonderful sense of humor. Near Fannin Hall, there’s a plaque near a tree dedicated to her, and when she died, Richland had a memorial service for her.

“She was just appreciated by a number of people,” James said. “We established a

scholarship for her. There’s $25,000 in it.”

Holley also served the Richland community through countless hours of volunteer work in the service area. The funds from this permanently endowed scholarship are to be awarded to a deserving student in her memory.

Applicants complete a Statement of Intent, detailing why they are interested in pursuing a college degree, including a two-page, doublespaced, typewritten narrative describing a five-to-10-year vision for their lives and how

college will help them achieve that vision.

Applicants must also submit completed Dallas County Community College District Foundation scholarship application forms along with their statements of intent and show proof of need by supplying copies of their most recent IRS tax returns with the number of people in the household.

The Scholarship Review Committee will select the recipient based on complete application materials and for content, quality, vision and academic intent expressed in the Statement of Intent. The committee consists of an administrative support team: Rainey Agent, Maria Chobany, Bethany Wright, Janet James and Vickie Allen, who works in the registrar’s office and was a close friend of Holley’s.

Once the committee has reviewed the submissions of all applicants, the one chosen for the scholarship will be forwarded to the Dallas County Community College District Foundation office. They will check the criteria with the team leaders.

The scholarship award winner and all applicants will be advised by mail of the recipient.

According to merriam-webster.com, an online dictionary and encyclopedia, a coach is defined as a private tutor; one who instructs or trains, especially one who instructs players in the fundamentals of a sport and directs team strategy.

However, a great coach is more than just that. A great coach is one who understands his players and allows his players to understand

him in order to create a mutual understanding of what needs to be accomplished as a team.

Coaching takes more than just instruction. It takes leadership, understanding and patience.

Coaching also takes multiple techniques.

Just like a parent can’t raise two children the same way, a coach must find different ways to coach a player.

Understanding an athlete beyond the court, field or arena is essential for coaches to know how to adjust their coaching style to fit their players.

Bill Foy, Richland’s men’s basketball head coach, stressed the importance of knowing how to handle each player.

“You want to have a good relationship with them and usually at this level it starts with the recruiting process. You certainly want to draw the line between player and coach, but it benefits both the coach and the players to establish a good relationship,” Foy said.

“So being a good coach is more than just the X’s and O’s of the game. It’s also knowing and understanding how to adjust to different players and situations."

Richland art students displayed their best works at the annual Student Art Exhibition April 11 in the Brazos Gallery.

Michael Mazurek, interim art gallery director, said there were more than 100 entries submitted. About 40 were displayed during the two-hour reception held in the gallery. Students won first, second and third place prizes, along with a new Director’s Choice Award.

“It’s wonderful. We have some extremely talented students,” Mazurek said.

Mazurek said juror Jeff Zilm spent a whole day selecting the winning art pieces with no knowledge of which student submitted each one. Mazurek and Zilm are good friends and have known each other for several years.

Zilm works at the Dallas Museum of Art and has his own art studio in Frisco. His work has been shown nationally and internationally, most recently in Mexico City and Athens, Greece.

“He [Zilm] is a great artist,” Mazurek said.

“He’s been doing works over 20 years. He started in New York. He was really excited about the show. We spent the next afternoon running around the gallery positioning the works. I gave him total leeway on how to show them.”

“This is strong enough to be his surrogate,” Zilm said, as he critiqued the winning art pieces. “I love pop art. This is so perfectly pitched in its depiction of this guy that it has added such a mythic presence in history.”

Tomas Aguayo took third-place with an untitled colored pencil-on-paper drawing based on a poem by Seamus Heaney titled “The Follower.” He said the reason he was attracted to the poem is that it’s based on his relationship with his father, who was a farmer. Aguayo received a $25 Asel Art Supply Gift Certificate.

“I admired my father so much for that and the hard work that goes into that,” Aguayo said, but also felt that his father is disappointed that he’s following the arts as opposed to following in his footsteps in the farming field.

“It seems really fresh,” Zilm said. “I could even like tell you which gallery in New York would show this.”

In addition to the wins by Stevenson, Lantz and Aguayo, the Director’s Choice Award, funded by Vicki Mayhan through the art department, was awarded to Daniel Cervantes for his untitled mixed media on paper piece.

He received a prize of $50.

The student art exhibition will be on display in the Brazos Gallery until May 3. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
