Hybrid World, Hybrid Culture is the title of the annual Richland College Multimedia Digital Media Festival.

Dwayne Carter, lead faculty of the multimedia department and organizer of the annual festivals said, “This year’s guests offer unique views to cutting edge fine art, digital media and game design. This will be our 23rd spring to sponsor digital media events and student exhibitions. We are very appreciative of the support from Bobbie Harrison and the Office of Student Life.”

In a festival preview event on April 8, Jeremy Strick, director of the Nasher Sculpture Center, presented in Sabine Hall a slideshow of the upcoming “Nasher XChange” commemorating the center’s 10th anniversary. “Nasher XChange” consists of “a dynamic public art exhibition of 10 commissioned works by 10 renowned artists at 10 diverse sites throughout the city of Dallas.” The museum has received more than $ 1 million in gifts from corporations, foundations and individuals to support the project, according to Strick.

The “Nasher XChange” art works will be displayed citywide touching the north, south, east and west corners of Dallas and will run from Oct. 19 through Feb. 16, 2014. The public sites will be announced this fall.

The digital media festival will also include the presentation of game design projects on Friday, April 19 from 12:30 to 4:00p.m. in Sabine Hall, Room SH-118.

There will be a special viewing of 100x100x900 (100 video artists to tell a century) Video Art from an international selection of artists, a Magmart Festival initiative, from April 17-19 in Thunderduck Hall, Room T-246.

The Hybrid World, Hybrid Culture student art exhibition and reception will be held in the Lago Vista Gallery, April 18 at noon in Lavaca Hall (the library). The exhibition will be open for viewing through May 2.

Also the Richland Collegiate High School capstone presentations will take place in the El Paso Hall lounge, April 17-18 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.

“We are particularly proud to have innovative new media/site specific artist Marni Shendelman in residence in the Multimedia Learning Center viewing student projects on the morning of April 17 and reviewing Richland Capstone presentations in the afternoon,” said Carter.

Intercultural Festival of Cultures Outdoors – East Breezeway Everyone is welcome at this cultural festival, with free food, drinks and vendors of international food. The Richland Institute for Peace will host the planting of the 23rd Peace Pole at 11 a.m. as part of the festival. It will take place in the grove of trees between the East Circle and the east steps to Fannin Hall. Guarani, Hawaiian and Uzbeck, in addition to English, are the languages that will be represented on this year’s peace pole. The ceremony will follow the Richland Dance Performance Group, which will perform in celebration of the common needs of humanity within a diverse context. This will be at 10:30 a.m. on the steps in front of El Paso Hall overlooking the lake.

Festival to focus on steel drums Copy Editor

The Richland College Music Department will present its annual “Carnival of Steel” Drum Festival from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday in an outdoor concert featuring steel pan recording artist Liam Teague, drum set and world-class percussionist José Aponte and steel pan and percussion artist Shelly Irvine.

The 11 a.m. concert is free and open to the public. At 5:30 p.m. the festival will include a guest-artist performance demo clinic for $5 and an evening concert at 8 p.m. for $10.

Derrick Logozzo, Richland director of instrumental music, said people will really enjoy this festival because they will see and hear people from all over the world play music.

“They will hear many styles of music – classical, jazz, and they will hear all kinds of Caribbean music,” Logozzo said. “It’s going to be a fun exciting show.”

Logozzo said Teague is known worldwide and is an award-winning pan player whom he met at a Percussive Arts Society International convention years ago.

“We have been acquaintances ever since,” Logozzo said. “This is the first time he’s come to Richland. He is absolutely amazing. People will not want to miss his performance. To see his hands move is amazing.”

Teague has served as associate professor of steel pan and co-director of the steel band at Northern Illinois University.

Aponte is a native of Carolina, Puerto Rico and a graduate from the Conservatorio de Musica de Puerto Rico and the Musicians Institute of Technology in Los Angeles. He holds a master’s degree from the University of North Texas Jazz Studies Program.

Logozo said Irvine was one of his teachers in Ohio and is the tuner of the steel pan instruments at Richland.

“He comes down here every April and he tunes them while he’s here. He plays his own steel pan where he comes,” Logozzo said. “He is the best steel drum tuner in the world.”

Irvine served as musical director for the University of Akron steel band in the late 1980s and early 1990s. He’s also the co-founder of Panyard Inc. of Akron, a company dedicated to the advancement of the steel drum

If you log into Blackboard (that thing you keep checking your grades on), you will find a box on the right top corner of your front page containing a list of tools. On that list is Search for Articles. Click on that and it will take you to the DCCCD database list.

From there, you will find useful links to your academic needs. Even if you aren’t sure where to start, there are several options available to get you moving, such as searching by your course or subject.

The page has 173 compiled databases that cover academic search engines and several online e-libraries. I wouldn’t suggest visiting most of them without logging into your DCCCD account. Most of these databases have membership fees or purchase-to-view systems in place. DCCCD has account access you can enjoy by logging in with your student ID. Never discount the power of Google.

More specialized Google searches are available when you click on “more” on the site toolbar and select “even more.”

Finally, if constructing a solid academic plan is difficult, it might not be a bad idea to take the Academic Framework course next semester. As redundant as it may sound, it is a course on academic learning. The course teaches everything from proper note taking to scheduling and study habits. Good luck!

art form and the largest manufacturer of steel drums in North America.

Logozzo said that steel pan originated in Trinidad. Its origins were in the late 1800s and early 1900s and that it started with bamboo instruments, as well as metal objects in the streets.

“It’s still very popular there, more so than in the United States,” Logozzo said. “It’s the Trinidadian national musical instrument. In Trinidad, calypso and soca are most popular.

Soca is a form of calypso with a little disco beat.”

In the United States, Logozzo said, there are probably only about 1,000 steel pan recording artists. The steel pans are built by taking an oil drum, cutting it, heating it, shaping it and hammering it in order to get actual pitches out from the top part of it.

Logozzo said when he was a little kid, he heard the sound of the steel pan on TV programs and it really stuck with him, so much so that he has been playing it for 24 years.

“At Richland, we have 50 drums,” Logozzo said. “They take up a lot of room. We’re working on storage.”

Logozzo teaches two steel band classes with about 15 students in each class. Most are music majors who transfer on to universities.

“It can be very lucrative financially at times,” Logozzo said. “You can perform professionally if you become known. You form a band and play with musicians or you can play solo.

You can make a living off of it. I have.”

Stephenie Meyer must know the psyche of a woman.

The popular novelist spent years with Bella (Kristen Stewart, “Panic Room,” “Twilight”), a woman torn between the love of two men.

Now comes “The Host,” another teen saga.

It deals with creatures from another world altogether.

Saoirse Ronan, who plays the lead, is a credible actress because she has always given dynamic performances with “Atonement” and “Hanna,” both of which were directed

by Joe Wright. Also, she led the way in “The Lovely Bones,” courtesy of Peter Jackson, one of his first non-“Lord of the Rings” tales based on the fictional novel by Alice Sebold.

In “The Host,” she’s Melanie, a teenager torn between affections for Jared (Max Irons, “Being Julia”) and Ian (Jake Abel, “Flash of Genius,” “I Am Number Four”).

Her inner monologue deals not with her thoughts but those of an alter ego named Wendy.

The story essentially plays like an update of “Invasion of the Body Snatchers” in which individuals are in danger of having their bodies taken over by outside forces.

Also involved in the mix is William Hurt, who frequently pops up in science fiction tales (“A.I. Artificial Intelligence,” “Dark City”) as Jeb, an authoritarian figure and family leader.

Meyer’s trademark images of love and pining for a significant other are central to the story.

Director Andrew Niccol knows the science fiction world all too well, having written the ridiculous and ludicrous “S1mOne” as well as the brothers in peril saga of “Gattaca” and the awesome Jim Carrey tale, “The Truman Show.”

He knows about character development and giving feelings and emotions to everyone involved.

If one has time for more lovesick melodrama, they can do worse than being involved with the denizens that occupy “The Host.”

Grade: B-

Can you save her?

The first thing that comes to mind when I think of “Bioshock Infinite” is: “wow!” I know that’s a vague statement, but it’s simply amazing. The characters were written and woven together incredibly well. Unraveling every piece of the story and characters engages the players into the game so that they experience the passion and chaos.

Players take on the role of former Pinkerton agent Booker DeWitt. Set in 1912 during the development of American exceptionalism, Booker is sent to the floating air-city of Columbia to clear a debt. In order to do that, he has to rescue a young girl named Elizabeth, who is held captive in a tower and must be returned unharmed. Sounds simple enough.

Booker is traveling by boat to reach a lighthouse that’s supposed to take him to Columbia. He is shot up into the sky like a rocket to enter the city. Once Booker has reached this city, he enters into what looks to be a temple with stream like pathways that lead him to a mass.

Players find out that in order to enter the city, they must be purified - in other words,

baptized. However, while the priest like man is supposed to be baptizing Booker, it actually appears that he is drowning him. Booker wakes up in the city and some overly muscular statues of the founding fathers are staring down at him. Some of the citizens are praying to the statues, which of course is odd.

Moving on, Booker is roaming the streets of the city, high in the sky and, as the player, you notice posters on the walls showing a Prophet known as Comstock and some of the False Shepard. It talks about a prophecy, that the False Shepard is supposed to take away the lamb whom you find out in a bit is Elizabeth.

As Booker continues on to the path of rescue, he comes across a raffle. He is chosen to pick a ball with a number on it. His number gets called and he wins a prize to throw the ball at two citizens, a white male and a black female. This was a time when mixing races was highly frowned upon.

When Booker is about to throw the ball, a police officer grabs his wrist and sees a marking on the hand that happens to be the mark of the False Shepard.

Obviously Booker is confused about what’s happening. But everyone doesn’t hesitate to flee and try to murder him. As a player, you

have to literally fight off hundreds of people in order to get to Elizabeth and get her out of there. Booker will acquire powers called Vigors throughout the game, collect a variety of weapons and gain infusions that will upgrade Booker’s salts, health and shield to fend off enemies. Salts are used to power up your Vigors. Players will find gear and also get to use a

grappling hook that transports Booker on railways called Skylines.

It’s not only fun also helps,

to use, but it when fighting a horde of people and machines, to get away. Booker also comes up against mini-bosses such as The Motorized Patriot

and the Handyman. They are a serious pain in the rear to fight against.

Oh, by the way, I highly suggest to pay attention to detail in “Bioshock Infinite.”

Remember every decision that is made and characters you’ve met. It’s really vital to find the Welcome Centers and Voxophone, which does diary like voice recordings.

Don’t worry, my gamer friends, I will not be giving out any spoilers. I am here to tell you that “Bioshock Infinite” not only brings a remarkable story line and the most engaging gameplay that I have played in a very long time. You must buy the game and play over and over again. It’s one of those games that will never get old.

“Booker... Are you afraid of God?”

Like Booker, I, too was, afraid of Elizabeth. When trailers started to roll for “Bioshock Infinite,” Elizabeth set the gaming world on fire. Who was this girl? Would she just be a single mission or recurring character?

Then we saw more trailers emphasizing her as much as Booker. This made me afraid.

Any gamer who has played with an NPC (non-player character) knows my pain. The mission is usually clunky following a boring point A to point B formula. The NPC is often downright awful, stupidly walking directly into the enemies’ line of fire, or worse your line of fire. NPCs are notorious for glitches or getting lost and stuck in environments. Or, on the other side of the spectrum the NPC is so powerful that it can win the game for you. NPCs walk a dangerous road, a road littered with the bodies of dead NPC’s that somehow managed to fall waist deep into the road.

Elizabeth would make or break “Infinite.”

Boy was I wrong. Elizabeth is a fascinating creature. She is arguably the main character of “Infinite.” Booker, Comstock and even the entire city of Columbia serve as backdrop for the story of Elizabeth.

As a character, she is strongly and consistently written. Her behavior and actions feel natural. A big problem with an NPC companion is their sudden mood swings or behavior that can switch on a dime. Elizabeth acts as any person placed in extraordinary circumstances would act. Her interactions with Booker are open and honest. These exchanges reveal plot and serve to build her character. As a character Elizabeth feels and behaves like a living, breathing person.

But what about her game play?

Elizabeth pays her way, sometimes literally. Out of combat she scrounges up silver eagles for Booker. The amounts vary but it’s far from chump change. She often tosses larger amounts of money your way when closer to a vending machine.

Combat is where Elizabeth really shines.

She will find you ammo, health and salt, depending on the situation. On more than one occasion Elizabeth’s assistance allowed me

to survive a desperate situation. Be aware that as the player you can’t control what or when she gives you anything in combat.

Also, look for cover or a safe place before accepting the throw as enemies still damage you while the cut scene of you grabbing the item takes place.

A nice touch that helps sound out Elizabeth’s character is her lock-picking skill. For her character who has been trapped her whole life, it feels natural that she would be obsessed with picking locks. It wasn’t necessary but it helped fill her out and give Eliza-

beth more depth out of combat.

“Bioshock Infinite” revolves around Elizabeth and her story. Ken Levine, creative director and co-founder of Irrational Games, took an ambitious swing with Elizabeth.

They needed you to care about this girl; they needed to create a relationship between the player and Elizabeth.

I believe they succeeded. Elizabeth is an integral center piece and the heart of an intricate story that delivers an experience rife with an emotional depth seldom seen in a game.

Each year journalism students participate in on-site competitions at the Texas Intercollegiate Press Association (TIPA). The Richland Chronicle staff traveled to Fort Worth April 4-6 to compete in editorial writing, news writing, magazine design, TV and radio broadcasting and photography.

Yessenia Aranda received second place in Spanish TV Announcing, Ladise Perez won third place in TV News Writing and Dan Solis received third place in Video News. Kisten S. Chetty, managing editor of the Chronicle, won second place in editorial writing.

Aside from competitions, the TIPA conference provides a forum for student publications from two and four-year campuses to showcase published issues. TIPA participants also attended workshops and socialized with individuals in the journalism field.

The conference encourages students interested in pursuing a career in journalism to explore the numerous opportunities such as webpage design and broadcasting. Attendees

Houston-area college student Dylan Quick went on a stabbing rampage injuring 14 students at the Lone Star College campus April 9. The college is located in Cypress.

According to CNN, Quick attacked students in the health science center with what appeared to be a box cutter. The suspect attacked the victim’s faces and necks. At press time two victims remained in the hospital in stable condition.

Authorities announced shortly after the attack that Quick said he imagined cutting people’s faces and using them as masks.

Quick was charged April 9 with three counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

The website also states that upon his court hearing Thursday Quick waived his right to a court hearing.

Meanwhile in Houston, the University of St. Thomas received two bomb threats April 11. According to a report from the Houston Chronicle the school used an emergency notification to alert staff and students to evacuate the campus at 8:30 a.m.

The Houston Police department cleared the buildings at 5:30 p.m. April 11.

Collin College also received bomb threats for three of its buildings April 11. According to www.pegasusnews.com, the campus is located in Frisco and the college used CougarAlert system through texts and voice messages. The local police issued the campus all clear at 7:30 p.m. Classes returned to the original schedule April 12.

Remembering Britain's 'Iron Lady' Staff Writer

Ceremonial funeral services with military honors for Margaret Thatcher, former prime minister of the United Kingdom, known as Maggie to her friends and “the Iron Lady” to others, will be held Wednesday at St. Paul’s Cathedral, according to Prime Minister David Cameron’s office.

Her legacy was to change her country’s dominant ideology from state socialism implemented in decades of Labour Party policies to an individualist market capitalism implemented in Conservative Party policies. In the process she returned the U.K. to eight years of economic growth and prosperity in the 1980s.

Thatcher supported President Ronald Reagan and the United States in defeating communism in the Soviet Union and winning the Cold War. Thatcher had been in declining health for a number of years and died peacefully in her sleep April 8 following a stroke.

President Barack Obama said, “The world has lost one of the great champions of freedom and liberty and America has lost a true friend.”

John Boehner, speaker of the house, said, “The greatest peacetime prime minister in British history is dead. Margaret Thatcher, a grocer’s daughter, stared down elites, union bosses and communists to win three consecutive elections, establish conservative principles in Western Europe and bring down the Iron Curtain."

Nancy Reagan, Reagan's widow, said: "Ronnie and Margaret were political soul mates, committed to freedom and resolved to

legislation. No longer were the unions able to dictate the nation’s economic policies. Under Thatcher the British government pursued a policy of selling state assets with privatization of industry, thus reversing the Labour Party’s nationalization of industry.

When the Argentina government under the fascist junta invaded the British protectorate of the Falkland Islands in April 1982, she led the U.K. to victory. The Argentinians soon toppled the military junta.

In October 1984 there was an assassination attempt on her life when a hotel in Brighton where she and her husband and other members of her cabinet were staying was bombed by Irish Republican Army (IRA) terrorists.

Thatcher supported Reagan in opposing communism and confronting the “evil empire” of the Soviet Union. She was instrumental in the introduction of cruise missiles in Britain to counter the Soviet military threat. She allied the United Kingdom with the United States against the communist expansion and subversion in the West and the winning of the Cold War with the Soviet Union.

Thatcher remains a controversial figure in Britain. She was loved and revered by many as well as loathed and reviled by some. She will be remembered by all who value economic freedom and individual liberty.

In 1975 Thatcher was elected leader of the Conservative Party. She was subsequently elected prime minister of the United Kingdom on May 4, 1979. Thatcher served three terms from 1979 to 1990 becoming Britain’s longest-serving prime minister in over a century as well as the most dynamic, inspirational and controversial.

When Thatcher took office, the British economy was in shambles and in recession, inflation was rising and the government faced possible bankruptcy. This was a direct result of many years of Labour Party socialistic policies, out-of-control government spending, confiscatory taxation and the nationalization or state control of many industries including coal, steel, electricity, water, airlines and telecommunications.

The writings of Austrian economist and political philosopher Friedrick A. Hayek, winner of the 1973 Nobel Prize in Economics, in particular his book, “The Road to Serfdom.” inspired and guided Thatcher’s economic policies.

Thatcher turned the economy around and made Britain governable again by taking on and taming the trade unions with labor reform
