One month in, chancellor lays out his vision Alex Ortuno

Managing Editor In one month, many things can change. It has been one month since Dr. Justin Lonon became the chancellor for Dallas College.

Lonon was interviewed on the Dallas College ‘Spotlight’ series, a series where they interview guests over their accomplishments.

Lonon expressed his gratitude for being chancellor and how it presents new responsibilities for him but also wants to make employees feel at a place of belonging, especially when issues are to be resolved.

“I feel the weight of the responsibility in a very different way than I did even in my previous role.”

Lonon said how everyone has been welcoming and supportive so he has been excited for the opportunities that are ahead. Lonon has said that he’s more of a ‘laidback’ kind of guy and is fairly approachable.

“I walk the halls, and as I’m on campus, I want employees to feel empowered to wave their hand and go, ‘Hey, here’s an issue. Let’s take care of it,’” Lonon said.

Tackling the job of being chancellor not only brings new responsibilities but also new challenges. Lonon said he understood that with the Dallas College transition, there are problems and other issues that must be addressed.

The Action 2022 Plan was launched to identify problems that need to be resolved.

Lonon said the college has many great people who are serving the students and ensuring that Dallas College is providing the needs of the community, businesses and industries.

The Dallas College Foundation has been a focus as it has received expansions that directly impact students and parents.

“We’re going to continue to expand the [Dallas County] Promise, expand our Early College High School P-TECH offerings throughout Dallas County,” Lonon said.

“We’re working on a baccalaureate program around nursing, and so that we’ll be further along in that. And then also, in the online space, that we have developed complete online programs.”

Colleges have their own style of life and culture and Lonon wants to focus on this multi-year challenge. Lonon said he wants

Dallas College to be known as one of the best places to work in and for it to make a difference in the community.

“There is no other institution that I’m aware of that can have the impact on individual lives, and serving business and industry, and ultimately our community,” Lonon said.

“We are the bridge between those that are looking to get into the educational pipeline to better their lives, and business and industry that are trying to get people to work.”

Lonon said he has been amazed by the work from the faculty and staff and the student stories, some of whom he he has stayed in contact with over the years.

Lonon said the mission has kept him involved within Dallas College as he wants to continue helping the community.

“It’s about making an impact,” Lonon said.

“And I don’t know where else that an institution can make such an impact in individual lives, and then the community, the way Dallas College can. And that’s what has kept me here. That’s what I’ve been passionate about, and that’s what I’m excited about as we look ahead.”

Graduating SGA president Sesay offers advice to students

Managing Editor As time presses on, so do people when they move on. Former president of Student Government Association and current parliamentarian Edward Sesay moves further into his education as he graduates this semester.

Sesay served his first presidential term in 2019 through 2020 and his second term from 2020 through 2021. While Sesay looks forward as he graduates, he looks back at his time in SGA as president with honor.

“It’s been a blast as president of SGA during my time. It’s an honor for me to be president.

I never felt that one day I would become president,” Sesay said.

While Sesay said he had fun being involved in SGA, he will miss being a part of the organization.

“I’m really going to miss student government at Richland. Even as a host [for] Texas Junior College Student Government Association as a whole, I’m going to miss it because it’s been my life embodiment. I’ve been to every conference, every state conference.”

While it was a game changer for him to become SGA president for Richland Campus, he has had a rough journey in his time of governance dating all the way back to his high school years.

“Looking at my history of [being] president because I was in high school. I just came back fresh from high school into college so that was a different state and different type of mentality. I was class president and student council president as well. It didn’t go too well for me.

So when I stepped in Richland College then, I was looking for a organization or club to join

in and Carter, who’s our [previous] adviser, welcomed me to SGA and I loved it,” Sesay said.

While being president of SGA, Sesay has been approached with challenges. One of the biggest challenges he faced was to transition from in-person to remote operations during the lockdowns from 2020 amid the COVID19 pandemic.

“We had to move the election into virtual mode and that was another challenging moment as well to move from in-person to virtually and thank God I got elected. We had to find [new ways of communication] like Microsoft Teams or Zoom and it was hard for me to communicate with my cabinet.”

“Every event we had, every policy we had, I tried to put in, it was hard for me to implement it because I feel like the student body was not receiving the message, receiving the ideas of what student government is. It was hard because a lot of people travel, a lot of people graduated so it was a challenge to move from in-person to virtual because in-person, it’s easier,” Sesay said.

One of the biggest challenges Sesay faced was not related to COVID but something that changed the history of Richland – the Dallas College transition. Sesay said concerns were raised with the issue that SGA’s across campuses may be merged but said in a town hall meeting with former Chancellor Joe May, none of that would occur and they would remain independent.

As the Dallas College transition made SGA adapt to a new college, Sesay said it was beneficial for them as well. The transition to Dallas College helped him and the student government implement new and previously planned policies.

While Sesay moves on from Dallas College, he emphasizes the legacy that SGA should be about to further bridge the student body and the faculty and administration.

Sesay said he was honored to meet Richland Campus President Dr. Kathryn Eggleston and be able to work with her.

Sesay said he was able to meet with Eggleston to discuss the needs that students addressed from needing refurbishment and more charging stations.

As Sesay moves further into his goals in higher education, he asks for anyone interested in joining student government to do so.

While it may be fun, Sesay said it is an important learning experience as skills can

be developed and learned over time from the experience and involvement in SGA. “We have fun but the only thing you have to remember is the learning experience, the leadership skills because it prepares you for the future here, it prepares your soul, it prepares your mind, prepares your body for the outside world.”

“Think about student government as like a class to be prepared for you to be a leader in the future. Whatever major you’re going for, business, political science, nursing, student government can really prepare you for that into the future,” Sesay said.

Sesay added that the leadership skills learned from being involved in SGA can also help if anyone is planning to become involved in running for office in the future.

Stormy weather hits Texas and beyond Alex Ortuno

Managing Editor Spring cleaning, mowing the lawn and watering the flowers: These are all things everyone can associate with for the spring season. As the spring equinox passed by on March 20, the state was in for something else. The state was welcomed into the new season with a tornado outbreak that reached from Austin to Dallas.

Days before the storm on March 17, the National Weather Service posted a graphic stating that severe weather was expected for March 21, where all threats from severe weather were possible to occur. These threats included hail, strong winds and even tornadoes.

By March 19, the Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Oklahoma posted its new storm outlook that placed the North Central Texas region in an “enhanced” risk of storms, which meant numerous severe storms were possible.

Conditions worsened as the Storm Prediction Center placed a “moderate” risk of storms in Central Texas, saying that widespread severe storms were likely.

Across the state, multiple tornadoes were recorded. According to the National Weather Service in Fort Worth at press time, about 14 tornadoes touched down in North Texas with the strongest tornado, rated an EF-3 with wind speeds up to 150 mph, striking the city of Jacksboro. One fatality was confirmed in a storm survey for a tornado that struck

Sherwood Shores, a small community in Grayson County.

One tornado warning was placed in Northwestern Dallas County, prompting Dallas College to ask people at the Brookhaven Campus to seek shelter. “This is a Dallas College Alert: Brookhaven Campus is experiencing severe weather. Shelter immediately.

Move to an area marked Safer Zone. Not at site? STAY AWAY for your own safety,” said a Dallas College tweet.

The Metroplex caught a break before a storm system swept through the region in the early hours of March 30 with the agency confirming a tornado briefly touched down in Rockwall County. According to the National Weather Service, the tornado was rated an EF-1 with wind speeds reaching 100 mph, striking the McLendon-Chisholm area.

With the spring season only beginning, the threat for severe weather is much more likely.

Severe weather can strike at any hour of the day and can happen quickly.

Alex Lyda, senior director of communications for Dallas College, said precautions that one may take in the event their campus is in the path of severe weather.

“If you are inside, remain calm and do not exit the building. Notify others to stand back from the perimeter of the building and exterior glass. Each Dallas College campus is marked with ‘safer zones’ (areas that meet NOAA guidelines for severe weather). Close doors to prevent injury from flying debris.

There are also shelter-in-place guidelines.

Follow instructions from the College Emergency Response Team (CERT) members and/ or first responders,” Lyda said.

Another way to be prepared for severe weather is to be vigilant for any changes in information about the weather.

Information from the National Weather Service is the best source as this is the agency that declares watches or warnings for the region.

Dallas College issues two types of severe weather alerts, said Lyda. A watch is when conditions may deteriorate and lead to an actual severe weather event. A warning is when a weather event has been confirmed to exist by the National Weather Service.

“Alerts about severe weather impacting campus operations are sent by email to the address provided to Dallas College when the student registered for classes. You don’t have to

sign up for alerts. They are sent automatically to the email address we have on file. However, if your email address has changed since you registered, be sure to update your address to ensure you get the alerts,” Lyda said.

If students and employees have further questions about emergency event procedures on campus, they are advised to visit the emergency procedures guide.

“Please consult the emergency procedures guidelines for students, employees and visitors. There you find guidelines to [follow] in the event of a fire, power outage, severe weather or other emergencies. Our Emergency Procedures Guide is designed to help with an emergency at a campus or service location,” said Lyda.

Managing Editor More changes from Dallas College are underway. A new website interface service is to arrive soon. Self-Service is expected to be the replacement for eConnect over a gradual period of time. With eConnect being something many have grown accustomed to, questions may arise on what the replacement is.

Alex Lyda, senior director of communications for Dallas College, explained what it is.

“Self-Service is a modern, user-friendly interface that will provide a variety of online services to Dallas College students, faculty and staff. Self-Service will also notify students of important updates to their accounts, such as holds. Self-Service will be available to retirees to access their W-2 statements,” Lyda said.

“It’s spring, and all of the cares of winter are gone!”

At press time, Self-Service is expected to launch on April 4 and is to be for students.

Many of the previous functions from eConnect will be done in Self-Service.

“Many of the things that could be done in eConnect can be done via Self-Service, including student planning, searching and registering for classes, viewing class schedules, adding or dropping classes directly, and request a change to your program of study, as well as browsing the Course Catalog. The user experience, however, will be vastly improved with the new modern interface,” Lyda said.

Changing from one web interface to another may raise concerns that information may be lost. Lyda said no information will be lost.

Further information about Self-Service will be provided on video tutorials provided by the web interface.

‘Turning Red’ brings us back to our younger selves Grey Schessler Staff Writer

Our teenage years are the times in our lives that are the most adaptable and scary. Often, entertainment struggles to cover the awkwardness and starting stages of liberation as we grow into young adults. This is not the case of Pixar’s recent release “Turning Red,” directed

by Domee Shi. Beautiful in every way, “Turning Red” effectively communicates to its audience that this is a story of a teenager coming into her element as her true self apart from her parents.

With references from the early 2000s, catchy music, anime references and brilliant use of color theory, “Turning Red” manages to create an honest work that covers what it is like to grow into your own person. It is no surprise that this movie has been such a hit as Shi and the Pixar team have poured all their hearts into this work and it shows.

The movie’s direction with its animation was one of the elements that make the movie so good. The animation itself has hints of anime influences in terms of style. One thing that is also heavily present throughout the film is the amazing exaggeration of character emotions and how in certain scenes specific animation techniques are used to intensify the emotion and do it in way where it looks like you are seeing a panel out of a manga or comic.

That, in addition with the use of color throughout this movie, makes a visually fun world that is able to communicate character personality with just their appearance alone.

The best part is that the character designs follow their progression as people throughout the movie from being subtle with Ming (voiced by Sandra Oh) to the outright changes with Mei Lee (voiced by Rosalie Chiang).

The music in “Turning Red” also plays a large part by being a device to provide the emotional push in a scene but also providing us with catchy nostalgia with a knock off version of the band NSYNC with songs written by sibling duo Finneas O’Connell and Billie Eilish. This movie also does not pull its punches in any way.

There were moments when watching this movie, I was reminded of all the cringy things I used to do when I was 13. “Turning Red” will have its moments where you have flashbacks to all the dumb things you did. The movie gives you the ability to stop and laugh at your past, however.

This makes the movie viewable for every generation, though some of the jokes might fall flat on a much older audience.

This movie was made for millennials and those in generation Z and X. It also hits so many milestones while it has the chance because of the smart choices Shi decided to make with the film’s direction of art, music and references. On top of all that, she decided to wrap it up with a cute red panda, making this movie unforgettable in so many ways.

Overall, “Turning Red” is an emotionally intelligent movie that is a must-see for any teenager and their parents with a need to reconnect with new boundaries.

Grade: A+

‘The Lost City’ is mostly just lost time Ricky Miller

Entertainment Editor I interviewed Oscar winning actress Sandra Bullock almost 30 years ago. It was for director Peter Bogdanovich’s “The Thing Called Love” (1993), a romantic comedy-drama musical. It was significant, since it featured the late River Phoenix in an offbeat lead role as the head of a group of friends and denizens trying to make a name for themselves in the Nashville music business.

It was one of my first full-fledged movie junkets, wherein the studios would bring various personalities and talent to promote the movie. Bullock’s appearance was necessary, since her character played a major part in the storyline. It did not fare too well at the box office, since it just sort of came and went sans much fanfare.

With the recently released “The Lost City,” Bullock plays a novelist who always churns out cheesy romantic-dramas. They always seem to have co-star Channing Tatum’s face on the poster. When watching the trailer, my first thought was “Romancing the Stone,” a 1984 Robert Zemeckis-directed romantic adventure with Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner.

“The Big Chill” (1983) – Hurt was a key part of the ensemble cast in this emotional drama with comedy about former college friends reuniting for the funeral of a close college friend. The talented cast includes Tom Berenger, Glenn Close Jeff Goldblum and Kevin Kline.

A+

“The Accidental Tourist” (1988) – In this romanticdrama, Hurt portrays Macon, a set-in-his-ways, meticulous writer of a travel guide of the movie title.

Supporter Geena Davis won an Oscar for her stunning performance as wacky, outgoing Muriel.

A-

It was a mediocre hit, even spawning a sequel with 1985’s “Jewel of the Nile,” a modest success by today’s standards.

In “The Lost City,” Tatum’s Alan character develops feelings for Bullock’s writer persona, something he never expected. The pair share fun banter that translates well to the screen.

The one scene that is supposed to garner smiles and laughs did not work for me in the very least. The crowd was laughing, but I just rolled my eyes.

The directors, Aaron Nee and Adam Nee, keep this one moving quickly. There are few slow spots, since the story always has somewhere to go.

I think Daniel Radcliffe took on this co-starring role as Abigail Fairfax because he just wanted to get out of his Harry Potter character and play something not usually on his resume. His character is a wealthy individual who wants a piece of the treasure for himself.

The pacing on this engaging tale is appropriate for the allotted time, since it does not drag, even for a second. “The Lost City” does what it’s supposed to do in that the ending is nothing memorable, just a satisfying time at the cinema.

Grade: C

“The Village” (2004) – In this disjointed mysterythriller from M. Night Shyamalan, Hurt’s Edward Walker is a member of the townspeople lying to the other people about the monsters that may or may not reside nearby. Co-stars include Sigourney Weaver, Joaquin Phoenix and Bryce Dallas Howard.

“Captain America: Civil War” (2016) – Hurt reprises his role as Thunderbolt Ross, secretary of state for the United States in this sci-fi action-adventure starring Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr. and Scarlett Johansson.

‘The Legend of Vox Machina’ is an animated success Damon Craig

Online/Special Projects “The Legend of Vox Machina” is an animated series created by the collective heads of Critical Role Productions and Titmouse Studios and premiered on Amazon Prime Video on Jan. 27. The series follows a ragtag and motley group of intrepid adventurers, known as Vox Machina, and consists of a cast of renown voice actors Matthew Mercer, Travis Willingham, Sam Riegel, Laura Bailey, Liam O’Brien, Ashley Johnson, Taliesin Jaffe and Marisha Ray. Though the setting is high fantasy, given the animated series stems from the weekly live-streamed “Dungeons and Dragons” game “Critical Role,” do not expect the typical romp indicative of most fantasy settings.

The series spans 12 episodes and expands loosely on the some of the first adventures that took place, pre-stream. The animation is bright and colorful, the action sharp, fast paced and exciting.

The dialogue and banter between characters is quite humorous and is filled from beginning to end with fun little Easter eggs and references to the original source from which the show is derived (such as the many appearances of Matt Mercer as minor characters, and a few nods to the second campaign).

popular tabletop gaming series, “Critical Role.”

“Critical Role” was initially a homebrew game (a term used in tabletop gaming communities to describe an original adventure, written and created by the game master/dungeon master - or GM/DM - in such games as “Pathfinder” and “Dungeons and Dragons”), ran by dungeon master and veteran voice actor Mercer (Leon S. Kennedy of “Resident Evil,” and Levi Ackerman of “Attack on Titan”).

What began as a weekly game played by a group of beloved friends and fellow voice actors gained surprising fame on Twitch and YouTube, when it first aired in 2015.

Though the campaign (the term used for a long-term game) had been running for two years prior to the stream, gamers were met with a group of lovable, misfit heroes known as Vox machina, Latin for voice machine, a tie-in and nod to the casts’ shared prof.

That said, as a long-term fan of the original

show, there is a ton of fan service in place, with many familiar characters and scenes that were wonderful to see brought to life in vivid animation, and voiced by an incredible, all-star cast, featuring the likes of Khary Payton, Stephen Root, and David Tennant, just to name a few.

With that in mind, viewers certainly do not need to be a fan of the source material to enjoy the series for what it is.

The humor may be a bit raunchy for some, and for those with weaker constitutions (if you know, you know), the violence and gore can be somewhat vivid.

While the series was thoroughly enjoyable, the only perceived issue is the pacing. The series was set to take place before the events of the live stream, ending with the conclusion of the fan-favorite Briarwood arc, filling in the gaps that occurred between the initial home game, and where the audience came in at the start of the show, in 2015.

It would have been nice to see how Vox Machina got together as a group (though the spin-off Dark Horse Comics series is said to do so).

Though a few key questions are certainly answered about certain pre-stream events (such as General Krieg, voiced by Tennant) and how it ties into the events where Season 1 lets off, it felt a bit rushed in the first three episodes.

All the same, the series is plenty bingeworthy and well worth the watch.

Grade: A-

‘Dr. Strangelove’ remains relevant about modern issues Raymond Thomas Pronk Staff Writer

If you believe climate change is an existential life and death threat to the planet, what could be the triggering event? A thermonuclear war between the Soviet Union, now Russia, and the U.S. would drastically change the planet’s climate. Once a nuclear weapon explodes over one of Soviet’s nuclear missile bases, a Soviet doomsday device automatically explodes nuclear bombs jacketed with “cobaltthorium G” against the attacking nation, the U.S. The world’s climate would be contaminated with radioactive nuclear fallout for 93 years.

This is exactly what happens in “Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb,” the classic Black comedy satire of the Cold War directed, produced and co-written by Stanly Kubrick.

The film is just as relevant and funny today as it was when it was released in January 1964 and still makes you think about the issues of nuclear weapons and possible consequences of their use, accidental and/or intentional.

The threat and fear of nuclear weapons is still very much existential—they could still eliminate humanity’s potential by ending in a catastrophe with both intended and unintended consequences.

The film was nominated for four Academy Awards including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor (Peter Sellers, who played three roles) and Best Screenplay Adaption, and won the 1965 British Academy Film Awards (BATF) for Best Film, Most Outstanding British Film and Best Art Direction B&W (Ken Adam).

It also received nominations for Best British Actor (Sellers), Best Foreign Actor (Sterling Hayden) and Best British Screenplay (Sellers, Terry Southern, Peter George).

In 2000, the Academy of Fine Arts (AFI) “100 Years of Laughs” list of comedies placed the film as No. 3 behind “Some Like It Hot” (1959) and “Tootsie” (1982), and in 2007 ranked “Best Movies Ever Made” with “Dr. Strangelove” ranked No. 26.

A deranged, U.S. Air Force Brig. Gen. Jack D. Ripper (played by Hayden) is commander of Burpelson Air Force Base in England and orders the B-52 bomber wing to initiate “Wing Attack Plan R,” a first strike nuclear attack of the Soviet Union’s missile bases that does not require presidential authorization.

The general’s chief of staff, British Group Capt. Lionel Mandrake, Royal Air Force (one of three roles played by Sellers), discovers that the Pentagon had not issued a duplicate attack order.

He confronts Ripper, who tells Mandrake he believes the Soviets have been fluoridating American water supplies to pollute the “precious bodily fluids” of Americans.

Mandrake realizes Ripper has gone mad.

Ripper locks them both in his office as U.S. troops attack and recapture control of the Force base.

If the Russian invasion of Ukraine escalates and involves the active participation of the both the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) countries of western Europe and the U.S., the possibility of an accidental or even intentional nuclear confrontation between Russia and the U.S. still remains a distinct possibility with President Biden issuing the “go code” or authorization to U.S. nuclear forces to attack Russia’s nuclear armed missiles, air craft and submarines.

Viewing the film “Dr. Strangelove” provides highly entertaining comic relief from the daily news war reports on television and radio but should also make all people reflect on the dangers and consequences of a thermonuclear war – a very real existential life-and-death threat compared to climate change.

T-Ducks baseball suffers a substanial defeat The T-Ducks (21-9) lost devastatingly to their conference baseball rivals the North Lake Blazers (11-15) 12-2 on March 26.

Richland had a conference series match-up and were hosted by the Blazers. Heading into the game, the T-Ducks lost the last two games in a row against the Blazers in a three-game series but had hopes of getting out of their slump with a win.

Richland got off to a good start, getting a run on the scoreboard in the first inning.

They also held the Blazers in check until the bottom of the third.

The Blazers were able to start a rally by getting a few players on base with impressive action of being able to convert RBIs. North Lake stunned the T-Ducks by putting up four runs in the bottom of the third inning. The T-Ducks were put into a position where they had to respond. It seemed as if a rally started to form. It was shortly cut, however, after left fielder Kyle Reece scored a run making the ballgame competitive.

The energy started to shift approaching the bottom of the fourth. The Blazers started early as they continued to get base hits putting themselves into position to convert hits into runs. And that is exactly what happened from that point as their rally continued in what seemed to be a long inning by driving in six runs making the game 10-2 at that point.

The T-Ducks did not have a response and appeared to grow frustrated by not being able to get on base consistently. With a couple of pitching changes and only two more hits the rest of the game, the T-Ducks would come up short in this conference series. The Blazers scored two more runs in the sixth and seventh innings further showing that a comeback was not to be in this game.

Cade Harris Staff Writer From Cinderella stories to hated rivalries, the 2022 March Madness Tournament had just about everything you could hope for.

The 83rd edition of the NCAA Men’s Division 1 tournament is the first tournament back to regular sized crowds since the COVID-19 pandemic. The tournament also went back to the system of playing games all across the country. Last year’s tournament was only played in Indiana to prevent teams from catching COVID-19.

A total of six Texas teams were in this year’s field: Texas Tech, Baylor, UT Austin, TCU, Houston University and Texas Southern.

One of the main things the beloved tournament is known for is the many upsets on the way to the Final Four and there was no shortage of that this year.

The Round of 64 is where most of the upsets take place every year. The biggest upset of the round was 15 seed Saint Peter’s University taking down two seed Kentucky. To get an idea behind the craziness of this upset, The University of Kentucky has a student body of 29,896 while Saint Peter’s has a student body of 3,197.

Another upset in the first round was 12 seed Richmond taking down the 5 seed and Big Ten champion Iowa Hawkeyes. Iowa was coming in as one of the hottest teams in the tournament, but they could not get past the Atlantic 10 champions.

Twelve seed New Mexico State was also able to take down a 5 seed as they got past the University of Connecticut. Redshirt junior

March Madness hits NCAA, topples some favorites Teddy Allen scored 37 points for NMSU to help send them on to the second round.

Other upsets were 11 seed Notre Dame beating 6 seed Alabama, 11 seed Michigan ousting 6 seed Colorado State, 11 seed Iowa St. topping 6 seed LSU and 10 seed Miami taking down 7 seed USC. The Round of 32 was not short of upsets either as the Cinderella teams continued to bust brackets.

Saint Peter’s continued its run, snapping a 21-game win streak from 7 seed Murray State.

Fan favorite Doug Edert scored 13 points off the bench to help Saint Peter’s move on to the Sweet 16.

Michigan also continued its run, knocking off 3 seed and SEC champion, Tennessee. There was much discussion going into the tournament on whether or not Michigan should have made it, but the players continued to silence their doubters.

The first 1 seed was defeated in the second round when 8 seed North Carolina knocked off defending national champion Baylor.

North Carolina led by as much as 28 in the game before Baylor made a comeback. UNC was able to hold them off and win 93-86.

Other big upsets in the round were Iowa State beating 3 seed Wisconsin and Miami outlasting 2 seed Auburn. Auburn and Wisconsin both were the regular season champions of their respective conferences but both were unable to make a run in the tournament.

The Sweet 16 is the round that the big upsets tend to slow down, but that was not the case this year.

off 3 seed Purdue, ironically on National Peacock Day. At the end of the game, Edert jumped on to the scorer’s table to celebrate, which will become a moment Saint Peter’s fans will never forget.

North Carolina was also able to capitalize after its upset win against Baylor as they knocked off four seed and fellow “blue blood,” UCLA. Sophomore Caleb Love scored 30 points for UNC to help them advance to the Elite Eight.

A second 1 seed went down as 4 seed Arkansas was able to defeat the West Coast Conference champion, Gonzaga. Gonzaga lost in the national championship game last year and was looking to get some revenge this year but they were unable to get past the Razorbacks.

Another 1 seed suffered defeat in the Sweet 16, as 5 seed Houston defeated the Arizona Wildcats. Houston made it further than any other Texas team this year.

The Elite Eight consisted of no upsets but the produced entertaining games nonetheless.

The combined seed count in the Elite Eight was 47, the highest in tournament history.

North Carolina ended the magical run from Saint Peter’s in the Elite Eight, winning by a score of 69-49. The game was never in doubt for UNC but that does not discredit the amazing effort shown from the Saint Peter’s Peacocks throughout the tournament.
