Why are you running for this position?

I want to be able to inhibit [sic] and create a culture where we actually come together as a community at Richland, where different clubs come together and we really bond together to be able to give students different opportunities with career building internships, resume building. I also really want to create a space that we can build a community garden and for Richland as well, that way all those proceeds will be donated to the food bank or the food pantry that we have over there and students that need those will be able to have that opportunity to access to it. I’d really love to work on is creating different events throughout the entire year on what’s going on internationally around the world, what’s local, that we we’ve create a culture of students that are in and informed on things that are going on that and voter rights.

What issue at Richland do you want to see resolved?

I think that definitely we could improve that sense of community here and giving opportunities to students because not every student knows about the clubs that are going on and the opportunities here. I think that the communication between the Dallas College board right now and then also advisors between students. That could really be worked on to be improved, that way students know what to do to further their degree plan and just so they know what’s going on in their environment, because this is their education.

Why are you running for this position?

I want to represent other students at Dallas College Richland Campus. I want to be the voice for diversity. spread awareness about conflicts that are going on as much as possible and about personal things like special days, special holidays for people like

What issue at Richland do you want to see resolved?

One of the first things I want to do is I’m planning a series of events. They’re going to be called ‘A Closer Look.’ [I have done] the first event that [was a] part of the series and the first one was about Syria [and] the Syrian conflict. The next one is going to be about Ukraine if I’m elected as president, that’s what I wanted. That’s the first thing I want to do. Another thing that I want to do is to dedicate [a] special corner to have for special holidays. [It will] always about a special day that’s going be [decorated] and [include] a little bit of information so that people can feel acknowledged and other people can find out about it.

Why are you running for this position?

I would consider myself as a person who can go up to speak to people and spread the word of SGA. That’s my main goal because there’s so many people that, who don’t know what SGA can do and what can you accomplish with the work of SGA. I just want to spread it [around] and I just want people to know about it and actually get advantage of it because it’s really advantageous for especially for international students, of course, for other students as well but for everyone.

What issue at Richland do you want to see resolved?

I would like to clear the mind because people think that SGA is something boring or they don’t know what it is. I just want them to understand how important it is actually and talk more towards that. And I think that’s like the biggest issue I want to focus on according to my position as well of course, and I just want to spread the good and make them understand to get more involved and stuff like that. That’s what I’m going to focus on basically and I have a lot of events planned for that.

Why are you running for this position?

I want to build a diverse team of people from different cultures and make SGA stronger. I would also want students to come and join our club from all the different clubs and also from the campus so that they can build the communication and leadership skills and also they in that process, they can also build their networking skills too. And I also want to help students talking about their opinions and if I get elected I’ll make sure those opinions that students give, they’re implemented and those changes can be seen on the campus.

What issue at Richland do you want to see resolved?

[The first issue] I think, it’s about [informing] more students. They don’t really know about the clubs that at Richland, and most of them have no idea and I think that if I get elected for Speaker of the House, I [will reach out] to all the students so that they will know about the club events, not only SGA but about different clubs.

I would also like to help the students about any difficulty they are experiencing by making sure that by asking the opinions and helping them out.

Yonata ‘Yoni’ Kidane | Candidate for vice president Why are you running for this position? I feel like I have the experience. Previously I was the Speaker of the House and with Daniel and Eddie and with everyone who has previously here during the summer months. We kind of help rebuild the chapter of SGA. And just [with] that experience, why should I waste it when I can, just rerun again next year and use that experience to help the next chapter.

What issue at Richland do you want to see resolved?

Helping others feel more involved. I’ve seen this where our chapter this year where we’ve grown so much. However because of that growth, there’s like certain people who feel like they’re left out and what I want to do if I become vice president is to find ways to include those people who feel left out.

If possible, budget. Somehow [and in] someway getting some more money to Richland campus. I feel like the more income and more budget we have, the more things we can be able to do [because] this year, most of our events and stuff that we did came out of our pockets and it wasn’t the best, you know.

Volodymyr Oleksandrovych Zelenskyy is the sixth person to be president of Ukraine, and the most recent politician to find himself in the midst of a war.

Russian President Vladimir Putin sent forces to take Ukraine on Feb. 24 earlier this year, only four days after the 2022 Winter Olympics concluded, in which both Russian and Ukrainian athletes competed.

Since the war began, Zelenskyy has taken to different media platforms to address the ongoing issues Ukrainians have faced in the past two months. He’s called on different international legislative bodies to intervene and send supplies.

While Russia and Ukraine have gained support from countries around the world and received supplies from supporters, no country has directly intervened.

Zelenskyy is no stranger to the social media and entertainment world. He starred and acted in several romantic comedies and participated in TV shows about the Ukrainian political administration.

One of his shows was ‘People of the Servant’ where Zelenskyy acted as a school teacher whose criticisms of the government were recorded and went viral, eventually landing him as the next president of Ukraine.

Both Zelenskyy and Putin have been using social media and other modern communications tools to get their respective messages to the world’s public.

Zelenskyy has agreed to many interviews, even doing an interview for ‘60 Minutes’ and making a speech during the Grammys in which he compared “the sounds of music to the sounds of war.”

Viktoriya Almazan is from Sumy, Ukraine, and has been living in America since 2005.

She works as a student success coach at Richland Campus and she agreed with Zelenskyy’s musical comparison.

“I think that’s about right,” Almazan said.

“All those casualties that Ukrainians experience can be compared to music, especially to tragic and dramatic music. He’s right about it.”

During his ‘60 Minutes’ interview, Zelenskyy announced that he is “not disappointed in Biden’s decision to not go to war with Russia.”

“The Ukrainian administration understands that there’s nothing they could do about it. It’s a very hard decision and very hard on Ukrainians, of course, to have all this weight on their own shoulders. But you don’t want to put more people in danger,” Almazan said.

Zelenskyy told the interviewer, Scott Pelley that “Ukraine is defending the ability of a person to live in the modern world.”

“Obviously nobody thought this would happen in the 21st century. Unfortunately Ukrainians have to fight for their ability to live, I totally 100% [agree] with those words,” Almazan said.

“Because if they can’t fight for their freedom, it means that they’d have to go under

the Russian regime, and none of them want to go ahead and be a part of Russia and live under their regime. Unfortunately loss of life and areas will be lost but Ukraine was, Ukraine is, and Ukraine will be as a country.”

Kent Ho, a senator of Student Government Association, said he thinks the importance of Zelenskyy being so heavily involved with the media comes from his morals.

“He’s a man of the people, Ho said. “He goes around talking to soldiers and goes around talking to people who are wounded in the hospital. So for uniqueness of the leader itself, that a true leader for the people.”

In several of the interviews, Zelenskyy shared evidence gathered by the Ukrainian government about Russian war crimes.

“What the Russian soldiers are doing is horrendously bad,” Ho said. “You see civilians being tied up and killed or being blown up by tanks but we don’t always know that or see that. If [they] cover it up and we don’t talk about it, what’s the point of us?”

“If we don’t at least talk about the atrocities happening in Ukraine, who will?”

-Kent Ho Ho said he hopes Ukraine and Russian have more cooperation on issues. He supports “the United States intervening in any way they want to help [Ukraine], but the problem is that if the United States intervenes, that will

cause a big problem with Russia. Ukraine is vital for the United States. We saw what happened with Afghanistan back in 2001, we don’t want this to happen to Ukraine or else we won’t be reliable allies for those eastern countries,” Ho said.

“Ukraine is more determined, they are family. They don’t want to lose any faith to anyone if one person still stands, they can fight. Zelenskyy has done a good job creating unity with the Ukrainians. They’re holding up pretty well, they’re not losing any resistance because of the sense of unity and family. It’s about unity, nothing else” Ho said of the Ukrainian resistance.

Both Almazan and Ho said that there is enough media coverage about the ongoing war.

Almazan said Zelenskyy has been participating a lot in social media and that by doing so “he’s trying to localize the issue.”

Ho encourages students at Richland to support anyone, whether in Russia or Ukraine, who stands against the war.

“For us at SGA, we want to educate people that we shouldn’t punish the Russian people for this. We have to stick together for the Ukrainian and Russian people,” Ho said.

Almazan said she hopes students will take the time to think critically about the ongoing conflict.

“I want students to identify who is wrong and who is right. I want people to have just a common sense to identify who created the conflict, who is involved in the conflict and who you as a human being can support.”

Entertainment Editor With Bruce Willis retiring from acting due to an illness, here are my top 10 picks from his career on the silver screen.

“The Sixth Sense” (1999) – With his third effort, director M. Night Shyamalan knocked one out of the park with Bruce Willis leading the way as a child psychologist who helps a boy (Haley Joel Osment) who claims to see dead people. With Oscar nominee Toni Collette.

“Unbreakable” (2000) – This tale was superhero based. Willis portrays an indestructible man who aids families in peril.

With Samuel L. Jackson. This was the first part of a trilogy “Split” that concluded with “Glass” in 2019.

“Moonrise Kingdom” (2012) – Captain Sharp (Willis) was essential in paving the way for lost youth Sam (Jared Gilman) in this highly stylized romantic-comedy with drama. Directed by Wes Anderson.

“12 Monkeys” (1995) – This is a nifty, offbeat gem from director Terry Gilliam.

Willis is James Cole, a scientist preventing an end-of-the-world disaster from taking place. Brad Pitt received a supporting actor Oscar nod. Costars include David Morse and Madeleine Stowe.

A “Looper” (2012) – This Rian Johnsondirected tale finds Willis as the elder version of himself in lieu of Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

This twisting science-fiction entry was just a fun ride to be in. Stars Emily Blunt and Paul Dano.

Morbius: Yet another generic time-spending Marvel movie Ricky Miller

Entertainment Editor Jared Leto is a very distinct actor. One can take him or leave him.

I like him when he’s subtle. I liked him in his Oscar-winning turn in “Dallas Buyers Club.” More recently, however with his turn in Ridley Scott’s “House of Gucci,” he goes a little too far over the top.

To me, this is what Al Pacino is; too bombastic at times.

With the new Marvel entry “Morbius,” Leto is Michael Morbius, a doctor who just wants to help people.

He’s a fragile doctor, looking almost emaciated at times. Adria Arjona portrays Martine Bancroft, his colleague and friend at the clinic where he resides.

“Nobody’s Fool” (1994) – In this gem from director Robert Benton, Willis’ Carl Roebuck , is one of the denizens that lead Paul Newman’s Sully deals with every day in a small New England town. With Oscarwinner Jessica Tandy, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Melainie Griffith.

“Die Hard” (1988) – Versatile director John McTiernan lit a fuse and spark with this tale of NYC cop John McClane (Willis) and his encounter with baddie Hans Gruber (Alan Rickman). I remember one of the promotional taglines well in that it stated, “40 stories of sheer adventure.”

“Morbius” is an engaging ride, but one without a true purpose, despite its pretzeltwisting plot points and turns.

Through various thoughts and ideas, Michael deals with predicaments aplenty in his quest to get better and healthier. His body fills out and he looks fit and more adept in everyday life.

Also making an appearance is Michael Keaton as the same character he played in a previous “Spider-Man” entry. He’s Adrian Toomes, aka the Vulture.

I think what Marvel is trying to do is establish a Sinister Six spinoff, wherein the Marvel universe will have its own version of the DC’s Suicide Squad, wherein the bad guys will have their own stake at a separate universe altogether.

Grade: C+

“Die Hard 2” (1990) – Also called “Die Harder,” this Renny Harlin-directed actionthriller finds Willis’s John McClane dealing with some baddies in Washington, D.C. at Christmastime. With William Sadler, Bonnie Bedeliah and William Atherton.

“Disney’s The Kid” (2000) – With this enjoyable yarn he’s Russ Duritz who encounter his younger self in Spencer Breslin.

Goslings are reminder to keep campus safe Alex Ortuno

Managing Editor As spring rolls around, so does the time for many animals to flourish around Richland Campus. This includes the avian residents, such as the geese and ducks, which are known to be either gentle winged giants or aggressive beings with honks and hisses. The geese are especially out in strength as five new goslings were hatched on April 8, just outside of El Paso Hall.

Sonia Ford, assistant director of sustainability for Dallas College, said that despite the geese being originally migratory, they have found Richland Campus a place to call home. ”They have found a permanent home at Richland due to receiving free food that lacks in providing nutritional value and creates an imbalance in the ecosystem,” said Ford.

According to Ford, numbers of the geese dropped as low as 29. With efforts done to assist the geese, however, the population rose to 100 with most primarily residing at the soccer fields. Others may take a swim or feast at Lake Thunderduck.

While spring is known to students as a new semester of schoolwork and other tasks, the season is also mating season for geese. In an effort to ensure the safety of geese nests, campus facilities take action to keep their young and humans safe.

“During mating season, facilities places warning signs where the geese nests are located throughout the campus. Please heed the warning signs as the geese are extremely aggressive during this time.”

Other actions have been taken to help the geese. According to Ford, the Student Green Team has created a brochure and the facilities landscaping team will be planting edible flowers and plants to provide nutritional food to our migratory geese.

Fish have also been a cornerstone of the fauna of Richland Campus. The campus has a history of fishing that dates as far back as 1976, according to a historical archive

of Richland Campus’ catalog. Fishing is allowed to the public, not only for students and employees. Dallas College plans to place signs that will reduce the issue of wires and hooks which have caused problems for the animals. ”The Texas Parks and Wildlife has provided fishing regulations signs to place at the lake but pending campus administration approval. Hopefully, when the signs are placed at the lake, it will reduce a lot of the fishing pole wires and hooks that are left in the water or on the grounds causing ducks to be entangled and injured.”

While the sight of the animals swimming

upon Lake Thunderduck and the soccer fields may tempt people to interact and even feed them, this is discouraged. This all begins with people not feeding the animals so the animals can continue their natural ways of finding food, especially for the newly arrived goslings.

“We need the cooperation of faculty, students, staff and the community to not feed the wildlife so they can independently seek for their food that provides nutritional value to their baby geese and balances the ecosystem,” said Ford.

Consequences can arise if people interact with wildlife such as giving them food.

According to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, wildlife have naturally specialized diets and consumption of food designed for humans or domestic pets may mean they will not get the nutrients they need to survive.

Malnourished wildlife may die from lack of proper nutrients or predation because of being very weak.

Wildlife are also not used to packaged food such as food wrapped in foil, paper or plastic wrappers. If wildlife accidentally consume these wrappers, they may get sick. ”Petting animals is not encouraged and not feeding the wildlife should be encouraged. After all, this is why they are called the wildlife and not domesticated animal pets,” Ford said.

We need to be more aware of the ADA guidelines Grey Schessler Staff Writer

Recently, I had the experience of going to a convention with a great friend of mine who has a service dog. And while I love spending time with my friend, I was reminded of something that happens every time we spend time together which has to do with her service dog.

It breaks my heart that I even have to talk about this However, some people don’t know how to behave properly around service dogs and people with disabilities. This is something we need to talk about because I’m someone who has very limited experience with my friend and her service dog. But every time we hang out I get another tidbit of the treatment my friend receives for having a service animal.

From petting her service dog, stepping on him, asking my friend about her personal private medical information, attempting to grab her service animal out of her hands or another person’s hands, who she has asked to hold him, to asking me or the other people around her “what’s wrong with her?”

When people even bother to interact with my friend, most of the time they’ll just ignore her and just attempt to do any of the things previously listed without even talking to her.

I feel like I shouldn’t have to say this, but because of the context of everything else, it needs to be said that this is a gross violation on so many points. The worst part is it has even extended to emergency personnel and hospital workers as well.

I have had to watch my friend’s service dog a few times when she has gone to the hospital because they would attempt to send her service dog to the pound, even though it has all the required paperwork needed to stay with her.

The thing that gets me is I only have a small window to my friend’s experiences. I’ve only ever hung out with her and watched her service dog a few times when she was in the hospital. But even with my limited experiences, I can say that on a fundamental level this is all ridiculous. I’ve seen how people treat her and I’ve experienced a little bit of what she goes through every day.

It appears nobody wants to listen to people from the disability community, though, and I’ve seen my friend’s frustrations with this

countless times. Nobody is listening and they need to be. We need to listen to people with disabilities and not dismiss them.

Educating ourselves is of the utmost importance as well. I implore you to ask about what the Americans with Disabilities Act guidelines are.

These guidelines are not the only thing that people need to understand. We also need to be able to have more open dialogue and not dismiss a person’s perspective simply because our walk of life makes it uncomfortable to confront the possibility that our perspective of the world might be incorrect. We also need more empathy. While this may not get fixed overnight, we still need to approach it with the zeal that shows we want to.

Richland baseball player makes college decision Cade Harris Staff Writer

Casey Fowler, sophomore on the Richland baseball team, committed to continue his academic and baseball career at St. Edwards University in Austin.

Fowler announced his decision on Twitter on March 29. “I’m very excited to announce my commitment to St. Edwards University to continue my baseball and academic career,” Fowler said. “I would like to thank God, my family and friends as well as my coaches for helping me get here.”

SEU is a NCAA Division II school and they play athletically in the Lone Star Conference.

SEU is 22-18 so far this season while trying to make up for a down 2021 season. SEU baseball qualified for the NCAA tournament six years in a row starting in 2013.

Fowler is a shortstop for the Thunderducks and is already off to a hot start this season.

Through April 13 he has a batting average of .312, an on-base percentage of .400, and a slugging percentage of .800.

Fowler has totaled 115 plate appearances, getting 30 hits, 14 home runs and 49 runs batted in.

The Dallas Athletic Conference named Fowler one of the players of the week for March 27-April 2.

The honor was given to Casey on a week in which he went 5-for-5 with five home runs in a game against Brookhaven.

“I have been coaching for 36 years and have never seen anyone hit five consecutive home runs before,” Richland head coach Guy Simmons, told NJCAA.com.

Going into the five-home run game, Fowler had no idea how he was going to do. “I was not sure how my day was going to go,” Fowler said.

“I had an alright round of batting practice and I ended up making the right adjustment for the game.”

Fowler also went 2-for-2 with a double in Game 2 of that week. For the week, Fowler had a .700 batting average with 14 runs batted in and scoring eight runs.

Fowler attended Langham Creek High School in Houston and is member of the 2020 senior class that had its high school season stripped away from them due to the COVID19 pandemic.

Fowler chose Richland to go to school for the first two years as he looked to develop more of his game. “I felt like this was the best place to play and develop as a player,” he said.

Besides SEU, Fowler said he was in talks with East Texas Baptist University and McMurry University about playing baseball.

Fowler has gotten the chance to visit the campus in Austin and he had a lot of high praise for it. “I have been to the campus and it is a beautiful campus,” Fowler said. “My favorite part of the campus is on the hilltop where you can see the whole city of Austin.”

Fowler also had high praise to give to the school and his future team. “SEU has a great baseball program and a beautiful campus,” Fowler said. “I felt like this school was the best option to help lead me in the right path, both with my education and baseball career.”

Although Fowler is on his way out of Richland, he will still have stuff to take away for

the rest of his life. “What I will take away most is the brotherhood we have built on this team,” Fowler said.

Fowler and the Richland baseball team will wrap up the 2022 regular season on May 7.
