WOMEN WHO QUIT SMOKING LESS PRONE TO RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS
Smoking boosts the chances of being diagnosed with the most severe form of rheumatoid arthritis (RA), a potentially disabling disease. But if you smoke and want to quit, doing so could still help you avoid RA, new research shows. The study, published in Arthritis Care & Research, found that women who quit smoking saw their risk for developing seropositive RA start to decline about five years later. And their risk continued to decrease as long as they stayed smokefree, falling by 37 percent after 30 years. Seropositive RA is the most common form of RA, according to the research-
ers. It also tends to do the most damage to joints. But quitting smoking didn’t seem to change the women’s risk of getting a less-common type of RA, called seronegative RA. (Incidentally, this finding may suggest that seronegative and seropositive RA are actually different diseases with different causes, according to the study’s authors.) Why does smoking raise RA risk? In RA, a person’s own immune system mistakenly turns against the body. It’s not clear how smoking may make this more likely to happen. But some researchers think it may promote substances, called autoanti-
bodies, that the body makes and uses to attack the joint tissues, as well as boost inflammation. But what does seem clearer now is this: If you smoke, quitting may help reduce your risk for RA—not to mention many other diseases. And the sooner you become a nonsmoker and stay that way, the better. That’s because, in this study, former smokers didn’t see the full benefit of their healthy decision until years to decades later. Researchers hope to involve other people, including men, in future studies of smoking cessation and RA.

6 SMART WAYS TO AVOID FOOD WASTE In the past few days, did you toss out some food you never got around to eating? If so, you’ve got heaps of company: By some estimates, the average family of four in the U.S. chucks out nearly $1,500 worth of food and drinks ever year. These six tips can help you make a big dent in what you discard—and you’ll do more than save money. Tossed food ends up rotting in landfills, where it releases methane, a greenhouse gas. So by throwing away less food, you’ll do a bit to help the environment too. 1. Buy just what you need. Shop in your fridge first. In other words, eat what you’ve already bought before it spoils. Brainstorm meals you can build with ingredients you have. At the store, buy only as much food as you can eat or freeze in the next few days, particularly if it’s perishable. 2. Store smart. Some fruits and veggies give off natural gases as they ripen that make other produce near them go bad faster. Culprits include tomatoes, apples,
apricots, cantaloupe and unripe bananas. Store these foods by themselves. Keep fruits and veggies in different bins too. And don’t wash berries until you’re ready to eat them—they’re less likely to get moldy. 3. Know the shelf-life lingo. “Sell-by” dates on perishable food are only a guide to a food’s prime freshness—not a red flag for tossing. Chances are you can still use food a few days past the date, as long as you kept it at a safe temperature. 4. Don’t be a perfectionist. Cut away bruises and blemishes on produce instead of ditching it. The rest of the fruit or veggie is still good! 5. Get creative. For example, turn stale bread into croutons, sauté beet tops as a side dish, or use vegetable scraps for soup stock. 6. Make the most of leftovers. Add them to casseroles, frittatas, soups and smoothies. Or just heat them up for another meal or snack.

Third molars however frequently become impacted due to a lack of space in the dental arch and their growth and eruption may be prevented by overlying gum, bone, or another tooth. Impacted third molars can be painful and lead to infection. However, not all problems related to third molars are painful or visible. These teeth may eventually crowd or damage adjacent teeth or roots. Sometimes they may even be associated with the growth of certain cysts or tumors. As wisdom teeth grow, their roots become longer and therefore more difficult to remove. This is why it is often recommended to remove impacted third molars when the roots are one-third to two-thirds formed, usually between the ages of seventeen and twenty.
