staff led approximately 40 developers on a tour of the Sugar Creek Elementary and New Century school buildings last week.

The tour kicked off a search for developers for the 12-acre plot of land that includes the two school buildings, at 420 Church Ave. and 401 W. Verona Ave., respectively. The district will vacate the two buildings Friday, May 29, and hand them over to the city in November.

Dane County Executive Joe Parisi visited the Badger Prairie Health Care Center to congratulate staff on the results of its latest survey Friday, Feb. 21.

On Tuesday, Feb. 19, Parisi announced BPHCC, located on the eastern edge of the city between Badger Prairie Needs Network and the county park, received high remarks from residents and family/guardians in its latest survey.

BPCC is a 120-bed licensed nursing home operated by the Dane County Department of Human Services, the release stated. It serves Dane County residents with behavioral, emotional, or psychiatric disorders that prevent them from living with their own families, community settings or in traditional nursing homes.

A Dane County news release states the purpose of the study was to measure resident and family/ guardian satisfaction with the nursing home and its services, with the goal of using the input to ensure the facility provides quality services.

Overall, 92% of respondents rated Badger Prairie as “excellent,” and 95% of participants

responded “definitely yes” to a question regarding whether they’d recommend the nursing home to a friend or family member, Survey forms were mailed in October 2019 to residents of BPHCC who were legally competent to receive their own survey, or to their guardian for health care, the release stated.

Of the 117 surveys sent out, 62 were returned, the release states. More than 50 questions were asked in the survey, which focused on the topics of referral, the admission process, quality of care, the nursing team, recreational therapy programming and the facility at large.

The release stated respondents said they were well-informed about how health care was going with their resident (87% — definitely yes), they knew who to contact if they had any questions (94% — definitely yes), whether residents felt they were encouraged to speak up when they had a problem (87% — definitely yes), and their concerns were addressed in a timely way (88% — definitely yes).

When asked if they had peace of mind about the care the resident receives when they aren’t at the nursing home, 97% of participants responded “definitely yes,” the release stated.

Mitt Romney is a study in courage we can emulate U tah Senator Mitt Romney has been both praised and pilloried for his Feb. 5 vote finding Donald Trump guilty on one of the articles of impeachment levied against him.

What interests me most about his vote is his courage to stand alone over and against what must have been strong pressure to conform.

A preacher I admire, Arthur John Gossip (d. 1954), once delivered a sermon he named “Where Do Others Get Their Courage?” Gossip’s question is the one I put to Romney’s boldness. I wonder where that kind of daring comes from, and whether we who are not politicians can emulate it with regard to our situations.

I judge the vote by Sen. Romney to arise from an amalgam of factors none of which are beyond our ability to match.

Those are living by principle, being consistent and a willingness to make sacrifices.

The first factor I see is having a fundamental principle that serves as a living foundation for the whole of life. The foundational principle in Romney’s life is his faith in God. “I am profoundly religious,” he announced on the Senate floor before casting his historic vote. “My faith is at the heart of who I am.”

While I, as a Christian pastor, certainly believe faith in God is the ideal value to have at one’s core, I can conceive of other convictions that could

occupy this space in one’s life. One’s foundational principle does not have to be distinctly religious in order to be foundational.

Yurs For example, when I was a student serving as a chaplain in a nursing home, one of the residents told me that the grand conviction in her life was the resolve, made when she was a young woman, to do nothing she would be ashamed for her grandchildren to discover about her.

Courage in a decisive moment, then, begins as a conviction made in the past and placed in the core of one’s being.

A second factor that feeds boldness in a moment is consistency over time.

Romney’s Feb. 5 speech connecting his duty to a sworn oath was not the first time he spoke using that language.

When he was a candidate in the Republican presidential primary in 2007 he spoke of the presidential oath of office in much the same way as he spoke of the oath he took as a senator sitting in judgment of the president.

Consistency over time, the long march of a number of minute decisions previously made, might not make immediate acts of courage easy, but it can make them easier. It

strengthens a person’s core value and conditions one’s ability to draw upon it.

Romney’s statements in 2007 refer to the third factor, a willingness to sacrifice for the sake of one’s highest principle. He said advisers told him his religion would sink his candidacy.

Romney’s response was, “If they are right, so be it.” He saw there was something more powerful than powerful office, and he would not bring himself to sacrifice the first for the sake of the second.

Now, I fully admit that Romney has the backing of a financial comfort the vast majority of us do not enjoy. He can afford to be courageous in ways we cannot.

True, but the point is he saw he could not afford to be less than courageous. He was spurred and supported to act as he did because he had conviction, a history of acting on that conviction, and the willingness to sacrifice for the sake of his conviction. It was not financial wealth that finally made him courageous. It was moral wealth.

Such a wealth of courage can be ours if we consistently practice our best convictions and remain willing to sacrifice for their sake.

VAHS to present ‘Wild Oats’ play March 5-7 ‘Romance of the Old West’ inspired by Shakespeare KIMBERLY WETHAL Unified Newspaper Group

Verona Area High School students will bring a taste of the Wild West to the Performing Arts Center next weekend.

At 7 p.m. March 5-7, VAHS students will perform their production of “Wild Oats,” a comedy-melodrama inspired by the works of Shakespeare and John O’Keefe’s English comedy of

the same title, complete with innuendos, according to a news release.

All performances will be held at the VAHS Performing Arts Center, 300 Richard St. The show contains mature themes and is not intended for children younger than 14.

In the news release, director Steven J. Nibbe said the show is a challenging one for a high school to produce.

“We plan to really capture the fun and the excitement of the turn of the century American West,” he said. “We’ll have

gunfights, a saloon and damsels in distress.”

The performances feature the story of aimless thespian Jack Rover (played by Dominic Reyes), who finds his longlost family in the desert town of Muleshoe and falls in love with Kate Thunder (Avery Goth).

While in Muleshoe, he encounters characters such as his own mother, Amelia Delores Morales (Erin Zenk) and her crooked landlord, Ike Gammon (Jakob Oehler).

At a nearby saloon, the scene has plenty of characters shaking

up the town, including a sleazy pastor from the Church of Suffering and Denial, Ephraim Smooth (Alex Thompson), Col. Croftus Thunder (Seamus Angell), Irish-Indian scout Crow (Anna Larson) and two pals, Col. Thunder’s son Harry (Caylee Lawrence) and Muz (Abby Elson).

5, historian Michael E. Stevens is set to discuss his book, “The Making of Pioneer Wisconsin: Voices of Early Settlers,” at the library.

The book, published in 2018

by Wisconsin Historical Society Press, provides insight into the lives of Wisconsin’s early settlers from the 1830s to the 1850s.

During those two decades, over a half-million people relocated to Wisconsin, forming new communities. Many of these settlers documented their experiences in letters, diaries and newspaper stories.

Among these accounts of pioneers is the story of an immigrant on a packed ship crossing the ocean, the life of a 16-year-old girl riding in a wagon heading west and the experience of a mother living in the Lake Superior region who lost her child at birth.

Stevens’ book includes a translated manual written by a Wisconsin pioneer published originally in Germany which provided how-to advice to European immigrants who planned to come to Wisconsin.

The book will be available for

purchase and signing after the presentation.

Stevens has written and edited 13 history books. He earned his doctorate in American history from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and is a Wisconsin State Historian Emeritus. He held various positions at the Wisconsin Historical Society from 19872013, including state historian, state historic preservation officer and division administrator.

Farewell to New Century and Sugar Creek buildings

Being True to Yourself Early on in The Age of Reason Thomas Paine tells us what he believes: “I believe in one God, and no more; and I hope for happiness beyond this life.” He goes on to say that be believes in the equality of man and that “religious duties consist in doing justice, loving mercy, and endeavoring to make our fellow-creatures happy.”

What made The Age of Reason so controversial was not what Paine believed in, but rather what he did not believe: “I do not believe in the creed professed by the Jewish church, by the Roman church, by the Greek church… nor by any church that I know of.” Despite his clear statement of belief in God, Paine was—and often still is—labeled an atheist. But what he was trying to convey to his readers is the importance of one’s conscience in the realm of belief.

Infidelity, Paine contends, “does not consist in believing, or in disbelieving; it consists in professing to believe what he does not believe.” While this may be less radical today than it was two centuries ago, it is still common for religions to require professions of faith, and for people to be shunned, ostracized, or otherwise condemned for not believing in particular articles of faith. Faith can improve our lives in a variety of ways, but we should defend the right of people to believe differently about faith or God, or to not believe at all, or to suspend judgement about these matters. There is something sacred about the free choice to believe when it comes to matters of faith and morals.

For 40 years, Attainment Company, Inc. has been focused on giving children and adults with intellectual disabilities and autism a chance to succeed at whatever they set their minds to.

Tu c k e d aw a y b e h i n d other industrial buildings, people might not be aware of just how much Attainment Company, Inc., at 504 Commerce Pkwy., has expanded its reach in the 40 years since its founding.

Founder and CEO Don Bastian has continuously sought to develop resources so that people with disabilities can lead independent and happy lives since the company’s founding in 1979, president Autumn Garza told the Press. She was appointed president in 2016 and oversees the business’ operations, while Bastian still maintains an active role as CEO. The business sells assistive technology devices to aid students with disabilities in their learning as well Garza as curricular resources and professional development tools for educators Garza said the company serves people with disabilities, including intellectual disabilities, autism, cerebral palsy, Down’s syndrome, and other moderate-to-severe disabilities. She said the company offers its services to universities across the nation and sells its products in 65 countries with over 100 international distributors.

“People can use our devices because they can be programmed in any language,” Garza said.

Examples of products include software programs for building literacy and math skills, protective cases for iPads and communication devices for people with trouble verbalizing their needs.

The company has been a part of the Verona community since 1990 after o r i g i n a t i n g i n O r eg o n .

Garza said business plans to expand its office onto Clarity Street in the Liberty Business Park on the city’s southeast side, where it already has a warehouse.

Called the Early Literacy Skill Builder, she said it was the first scientifically based reading program designed reinforce the five National Reading Panel components to help students with a moderate-to-severe intellectual disability, including autism, learn to read.

For example, Garza said, many students with such limitations do well with routines. Teachers are given access to scripted lessons to help guide them

as its Volunteer of the Year, according to a chamber weekly email newsletter.

And the name “Attainment” says it all, Garza said, as staff want to see people empowered to succeed with its services.

“The whole purpose of developing this company … we really want to set goals and have people with disabilities attain them,” Garza said.

About National FFA Week The National Future Farmers of America organization promotes leadership, personal growth and career success through hands-on learning and educational opportunities within the agriculture industry.

It is made up of nearly 650,000 members and over 7,800 chapters across the United States and its territories, including a local chapter at Verona High School. The Verona FFA chapter celebrates National FFA Week Feb. 17-23.

Since 1947, National FFA Week has taken place the week of George Washington’s birthday, Feb. 22. It’s celebrated over this week to commemorate his contributions both as an agriculturist and as a founding father of our nation.

Today, its purpose is to educate and advocate for agriculture and celebrate the achievements of FFA members both locally and across the country.

All students are welcome to join the organization. The FFA is no longer a group only for future farmers. Members are future scientists, future veterinarians, future business leaders, future educators and future agriculturalists.

The Verona FFA collaborates every year with Miller and Sons Supermarket and Badger Prairie Needs Network to collect food for families in need. In 2019, a group of FFA members led by president Kelsey Last distributed grocery bags to neighborhoods surrounding the high school. The bags had a list of items needed by BPNN. A week later, FFA

members picked up the bags of donations. All food collected was donated to Badger Prairie Needs Network.

Millers supported the effort by providing the bags along with a drop-off location for the food donations. During the 2019 drive, the FFA collected almost 2,000 pounds of food in one week.

FFA Floriculture Career Development Event

Six Verona FFA members traveled to Indianapolis, Indiana for the 92nd annual National FFA Convention in Oct. 2019. Many FFA members from all over the country attended for a week of workshops, competitions, education sessions and bonding activities. This year, Verona members had the honor of receiving the National Chapter Gold Award. Vice President Mckenna Swann and Treasurer Cole Maxson had the honor of accepting this award in front of the convention. Members also were able to take a tour of CAT in Illinois. Throughout the convention, members attended workshops. These workshops gave members the chance to learn more

about different careers and receive tips on being a successful leader. Students also spent their time in sessions with all FFA members at the convention in attendance, listening to keynote speakers to learn more about agriculture and leadership. When not in sessions or workshops, Verona members spent their time walking around the expo center connecting with different colleges and businesses, learning more about schools and careers of interest to them. The country music band Old Dominion performed a concert for the students and there was also a rodeo that members could attend.

FFA members hand-wrapped donated gifts they collected for 297 families in need during the holidays.

One of the Verona FFA’s largest projects this school year was the Mitten Program. The Mitten Program is an annual project that the Verona chapter holds and its vice president, Mckenna Swann, was the leader of this year’s committee. The FFA started at the beginning of December reaching out to local companies and businesses to create mittens with gift requests.

Each mitten listed an age from birth to 18 years old with an accompanying gender so that community members could purchase appropriate gifts. Community members brought the gifts they had purchased to the locations where they had gotten the mittens and the Verona FFA picked the gifts up to package and wrap. The FFA members hand-wrapped each of the donated gifts. This year, through the Mitten Program, the Verona FFA provided 297 families in need with gifts for the holiday season.

On Feb. 18, the Verona FFA floriculture team was able to practice making flower arrangements at Blooms by Brandi, 205 S. Main Street. The Nationa l F FA’s F l o r i c u l t u r e Career Development Event requires teams to make an arrangement during a competition, so the visit to Blooms by Brandi allowed the students to practice their flower arranging prior to the upcoming competition.

Verona Area/Mount Horeb sophomore Oscar Best had a record-breaking performance and won two medals at the Division 1 state meet on Saturday, Feb. 22, at the University of Wisconsin Natatorium.

Best finished third in the 100yard butterfly, breaking his previous school record with a time of 50.25 seconds.

“I was hoping to do a little better, but I’m happy with it,” he said.

Best said his goal was a time in the 49-second range in the fly.

He’s planning on swimming for the Madison Aquatic Club this summer.

“I’m content with it,” he said.

“I’m really going to focus this summer and really try to get to the next level.”

Best missed two weeks this season after breaking a bone in his wrist while snowboarding.

“I think he was more at ease swimming against this level of competition,” VA/MH coach Bill Wuerger said. “He had the setback with the injury, but still finished the season strong.”

After missing last year with torn cartilage in his hip, Verona heavyweight Jay Hanson continued his breakout sophomore season by qualifying for the Division 1 state tournament.

Hanson (40-7), ranked ninth in the Division 1 by WiWrestling.com, pinned Sauk Prairie’s Austin Rider at the 2:52 mark of their second-place match at the Verona Sectional on Saturday, Feb. 22, to secure his spot at state.

“At first, I wasn’t sure how I would do this year,” Hanson said. “I kept on my grind and noticed I was succeeding more and more.”

Hanson clipped Onalaska/Luther’s Damion Tracy by 5-3 decision in the

quarterfinals, then lost to Tomah’s Hayden Larson 7-0 in the championship semifinals. Hanson pinned Reedsburg’s David Finkel in 1:43 in the semifinal wrestleback to earn a shot at second place.

“We are used to having multiple kids at state,” Verona coach Bob Wozniak said. “We have had a little bit of a drought. It’s good to have someone back. He’s been dominant all season.”

Verona junior Ben Grandau (126) and senior Caden Page (170) each took fourth place.

Grandau (25-16) edged La Crosse Logan/Central’s Daylin Haney 13-10 to start his day, but lost by pin to Holmen’s Branson Beers and Waunakee’s Nick Schweitzer.

Nelson dominates for Badgers University of Wisconsin senior Beata Nelson added to an already long list of accomplishments with a dominant performance in her final Big Ten Conference swimming and diving championships.

The 2016 Verona graduate won four titles and six total medals in Iowa City, Iowa, making her a ninetime Big Ten champion and first-team all-conference honoree.

She joined fellow senior Megan Doty and sophomores Lillie Hosack and Alana Palmer in the first-place 800yard freestyle relay on Wednesday, Feb. 19. The quartet’s NCAA qualifying time of 6:55.84 broke the previous school record of 6:57.54, set at last year’s Big Ten championships.

Nelson broke the Iowa pool record in the 200 individual medley by nearly three seconds in prelims, then won her second straight title in the event in the finals on Thursday, Feb. 20. Her NCAA qualifying time of 1:51.66 broke her own pool record and her own Big Ten record.

Wildcats outmuscle Spartans for regional title Verona entered the Division 1 postseason with the reputation of a high-powered offense and strong goaltending from junior Kaden Grant.

The Wildcats lived up to their billing, but also displayed added physicality in a 7-0 victory over Madison Memorial in a Division 1 regional championship game Friday, Feb. 21, at Verona Ice Arena.

“The postseason brings that out in us.

It has in the past,” Verona senior captain Cale Rufenacht said. “We have a little more energy with more on the line.”

Verona (21-4), the top seed in the Edgewood Sectional, will host fourth-seeded Sauk Prairie on Tuesday, Feb. 25, in the sectional semifinals. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m.

The Big Eight Conference champions beat eighth-seeded Memorial by a combined 17-0 in the two regular-season meetings, and dominated the pace of play in the playoff matchup despite a 10-day layoff.

“Being off for more than a week is tough, but something we needed,” Verona coach Joel Marshall said. “We had the flu bug run through our locker room, but were able to get everyone healthy.”

Senior forward Parker Ploc marked the board first for Verona, as he gathered a loose puck that squirted out of a mad scrum in front of the net and scored with 6:48 left in the first period. Fellow senior forward Drew Yeager collected the assist.

The Wildcats capitalized, as junior forward Walker Haessig scored a short-handed goal four seconds into the Spartans’ 4-on-3 advantage off an assist from fellow junior forward Leo Renlund with 4:29 left in the second.

Rufenacht sniped a wrister past Memorial goaltender Wes Turner off assists from Haessig and Renlund with 1:16 left in the second.

Renlund scored 42 seconds into the third period off assists from Rufenacht and junior defenseman Nathan Jurrens.

Yeager scored off a centering pass from Ploc with 12:03 left.

Rufenacht netted his second goal on the power play off assists from Jurrens and junior defenseman Josh Ostling with 4:14 left, and senior forward Ryan Ritter capped the scoring a little less than two minutes later off assists from Ploc and freshman forward Conrad Moline.

The Wildcats outshot the Spartans 57-21 and finished 1-for-5 on the power play. Grant recorded his ninth shutout of the season with 21 saves, while his counterpart Turner made 50 saves.

Senior Hailey Dohnal paced the Wildcat/Crusaders with a third-place finish on the floor (9.225). She also took fifth in the all-around competition (34.625), sixth on the vault (8.9) and eighth on the balance beam (8.55).

Freshman Katie Ryan tied Madison Memorial’s Maggie Lee for seventh on the vault (8.85) and classmate Lily Merrick tied for 10th (8.7).

Sophomore Alyssa Fischer (8.55) and freshman Ella Crowley (8.5) placed eighth and ninth, respectively, on the uneven bars.

Crowley took 10th (32.550) and sophomore Noelya Jaime Janaite placed 13th (31.50) in the all-around competition.

Madison Memorial won the team title with 140.025 points.

Verona grad to play for Mallards ADAM FEINER Sports editor

Former Verona baseball star Keaton Knueppel decided to take his talents to the Pacific Northwest for college ball, but will be returning close to home this summer.

Knueppel, a left-handed pitcher at Gonzaga University, and three other Wisconsin natives signed to

play with the Madison Mallards in the upcoming 2020 season, the team announced Wednesday, Feb. 19.

The 6-foot-1 Knueppel is a redshirt junior at Gonzaga, which is located in Spokane, Washington.

He missed last season and has appeared in seven games for the Bulldogs.

Knueppel took the loss

Thursday, Feb. 20, at Arkansas, allowing three runs on four hits in 2 1/3 innings. In 2018, he held opponents to a .160 batting average in eight innings pitched.

Knueppel was a four-year letterwinner at Verona and a first-team all-Big Eight honoree in his final two seasons. He was named second-team all-state as a senior after striking out 106 batters in 61 2/3

innings and finishing with a 1.02 ERA. The former Wildcat will be teammates with two former Big Eight Conference standouts.

Missouri State freshman catcher Drake Baldwin, a two-time Big Eight player of the year at Madison West, and Virginia infielder Walker Jenkins, a former first-team allstate selection at Sun Prairie, will

also suit up for the Mallards.

West Virginia freshman Hunter Rosenbaum, a right-handed pitcher from Webster, was the other Wisconsin native to sign with Madison.

The Mallards start their 20th season on Tuesday, May 26, at Warner Park in Madison. Single-game tickets go on sale Saturday, April 25.

Sayre replied there was a survey mapping error when the hotel on this property was originally developed, which created a gap in the annexation.

Motion by Touchett, seconded by Kohl, to approve Ordinance No. 20-956 annexing 0.224 acres of land at 515 West Verona Avenue. Motion carried 6-1, with Alderperson Kemp voting no, and Alderperson Gaskell abstaining.

(4) Discussion and Possible Action Re: Ordinance No. 20-957 rezoning lands at 515 West Verona Avenue. Sayre explained the City has approved plans for the Sugar Creek Commons development to construct a 120-room hotel with a conference center, and mixed-use buildings containing 143 apartment units and 26,000 square feet of commercial space. The developer anticipates starting construction of the project in the spring of 2020. To help pay costs associated with remediating the contamination on the property and to install public infrastructure improvements to serve the property, Sugar Creek Commons, LLC is seeking payments in the amount of $3.2 million. As part of the agreement, the City agrees to pay annually 90% of the available tax increment generated from the Property to Sugar Creek Commons, LLC after the City receives $5,000 for administrative costs. Only available tax increment generated from the property will be used to pay Sugar Creek Commons, LLC. Motion by Gaskell, seconded

PFAs: Chemical found in several regional bodies of water by the state DNR in October Continued from page 1 problems, including cancer and thyroid hormone disruption, according to the EPA’s website.

Interim fire chief Dan Machotka told the Press in an email the department had ordered and received the new foam to replace its old stock in January.

Machotka had told the Press on Dec. 27 the department had no plans to replace its foam, but that it was closely monitoring recommendations by the state PFAS Technical Advisory Group. Machotka wrote this month that the Verona Fire Department was awaiting further instruction from the state on how the old foam is to be disposed of.

He said the department had used the PFAS-containing foam “less than half a dozen times” over the last year.

In October, the state Department of Natural Resources found PFAS during testing of several bodies of water in the region. One major source is thought to have been training exercises at the Dane County Regional Airport and Truax Field Air National Guard Base, where firefighting foam containing PFAS was used, according to the DNR report.

Test results by the DNR found PFAS in nearby Starkweather Creek, which drains into Lake Monona, at nearly 15 times the amount recommended for groundwater by state health officials.

A run-down property near the center of the city could turn into a custom wooden baseball bat studio.

A requested rezoning of the property at 103 N. Franklin St., which contains only a storage building, is set for a public hearing at the next Plan Commission meeting, March 3.

Brad D’Orazio, owner of Night Owl Wood Studio and coach of the Verona Area High School baseball team, wants to rezone the property to be able to conduct “light industrial activities incidental to indoor sales or services land use,” according to Night Owl’s application.

The application stated the property has been inadequately maintained for years, and that there are dead trees outside the building and animals living inside it.

Commissioners will vote on whether to recommend the rezoning of the property to the Common Council later in the month.

Planning in brief Cleary expansion A long-planned expansion at the Cleary Building Corp. has returned to the city’s Plan Commission agenda.

The addition to the company’s offices at 190 Paoli St. was previously approved by the city in 2008, but the economic downturn kept the company

from beginning construction.

Cleary stated in its application that improved economic conditions mean it can take up the project again now.

Epic property boundaries A change to Epic’s property boundaries will be before the commission.

Epic wants to consolidate 23 parcels of land on Campus 2 that have been drawn over the past 16 years.

The single plat of land will “essentially wipe the slate clean” regarding property boundaries in the area, according to the development project narrative available on the city’s website.

Tour: City staff plan to give preference to proposals that preserve New Century building Continued from page 1 In January, city staff issued a call for plans to redevelop the site – known as a request for proposals – with a March 30 deadline.

With students having a day off as Verona Area School District staff participated in professional development, the developers were able to get a close look at the sites.

The district is abandoning both buildings when it opens a new high school on the west side of Verona in fall 2020.

Six of the district’s 11 sites will shift as a result.

The 64 year old Sugar Creek building is expected to be demolished, but city guidelines express a preference for any plan that lists the 102 year old New Century building on the National Register of Historic Places.

The two buildings represent the beginning of education for the Verona area – New Century was built in 1918 to house K-8 students in Verona, and Sugar Creek was built in 1964 to accommodate Verona’s growth, originally holding grades 3-8.

The tour group moves to Sugar Creek from New Century. developers toured the classrooms, bathrooms and utility rooms inside both buildings, starting first with New Century and ending in Sugar Creek’s gymnasium.

The buildings will be handed over to the city as a part of its May 2018 development agreement with the district.

That agreement, which essentially pays the district $4.5 million for the land and buildings, was the result of months of bitter disagreement over infrastructure improvements to ensure a second access road into the high school.

Possible concepts listed in the city’s request include a mixed-use town center style space with a community center and park, a community pool and a collaborative public working area known as a makerspace.
