It’s a mystery

On Friday, Feb. 21, young detectives were welcome to attend the “Bloodwood Masquerade Murder” to solve a mystery at the library.

Each participant picked a created character, one of which was t h e d e c e a s e d a n d o n e wa s t h e murderer.

For two hours, participants used clues, fingerprint analysis, fiber analysis and forensic reports to investigate who is the victim and the murderer.

The voices of eight Civil War-era Wisconsin women are being heard for the first time in the 21st century through a new book published by University of Wisconsin Press in January.

Edited by Stoughton-based writer Jo Ann Daly Carr, “Such Anxious Hours: Wisconsin Women’s Voices from the Civil War,” sheds light on the lives of these hidden figures of the State’s history.

Car will present the findings published in her book from 1-2:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 4, at the Stoughton Senior Center.

A former librarian who was a history major at University of Wisconsin-Madison, she had spent decades cataloging books but had not written one herself.

She has previously edited publications in the areas of library services and technology.

Carr said her book on Wi s c o n s i n ’s C iv i l Wa r women is a “real zag and a substantial change” from what she was used to researching and writing.

She said she was inspired to compile the book in 2014, after attending a program at the Fitchburg Public Library, where a group of male authors presented books compiling letters men wrote during the Civil War. Carr left the presentation wanting to know more about the untold stories of Wisconsin women during the Civil War, which spurred a five-year process of seeking out documents to compile a book on the topic. She wanted to illustrate the impact of war on the home front, instead of from the battlefront.

Now retired, Carr served in many roles at the UW-Madison’s School of Education over 36 years, which helped provide her the skills to complete her research for the book.

The book, released Jan. 7, was the result of Carr’s meticulous research, which initially unearthed the stories of around 30 women’s lives.

She said she could have written a 700-page book with all the writings she’d found, but the final publication, which focuses on eight of those women’s narratives, is around half that length,.

Carr presents her findings at a variety of venues around the State including libraries, senior centers, book stores and museums.

She said her next project might be writing a book recognizing the contributions military families made during that era, something

Jo Ann Daly Carr presented her new book “Such Anxious Hours: Wisconsin Women’s Voices from the Civil War” at the Fitchburg library on Saturday, Feb. 1 she learned about when she came across a book published in 1862 by a woman living at the Fort Sumter and Fort Moultrie army bases.

Carr learned that 45 women and children lived alongside the male soldiers at the bases. Some of these women and children were captured by the South and held as prisoners of war.

“I would love to learn more about them and see them be recognized; they all made contributions,” she said.

Five year process

Carr said finding writings by women connected to Civil War soldiers wa s n o t e a s y, a s wo m e n ’s l e t t e r s w e r e o f t e n not deemed important enough to be preserved in the same way male soldier’s letters were.

Using the publicly a c c e s s i b l e Wo r l d C a t , Carr searched for the letters and eventually found around 2,800 collections of letters written by Wisconsin residents during the war. From these, she identified 30 Wisconsin women whose diaries and letters were cohesively preserved.

Carr was looking for women whose writings provided a sustained narrative across the four years of war, with letters or diary entries available for almost every month of the war. The idea was to form a complete picture of life on the Wisconsin home front, starting with the day Fort Sumter surrendered in April 1861, through to President Lincoln’s assassination in April 1865.

“Such Anxious Hours: Wisconsin Women’s Voices from the Civil War” was published Jan. 7 by University of Wisconsin Press.

The eight women who appear in her book range in age from 17 to 43, and all lived in the southern part of Wisconsin during the war.

Carr sought to bring to light the previously unheralded contributions of these women to the war effort – sewing, knitting socks, fundraising, putting together care packages and raising the crops used to feed the Union Army. She had expected to find more women’s letters preserved.

“These women were hidden then and continued to be hidden today because of how these letters were collected and cataloged,” Carr said.

Finding connections

As she wrote, Carr considered similarities in the lives of the eight women and began pairing them together to compare and

contrast their experiences.

Two women, Emily Quiner and Annie Cox, were both 21 and lived less than a mile apart in Madison, but had distinct experiences, demonstrating how war touched similar people in disparate ways.

Quiner provides the longest, most sustained voice in the book, as she began writing a personal diary the day Fort Sumter fell. Cox wrote letters to a friend, who later became her fiance. He was a law student and Copperhead (pacifist Democrat) at the University of Michigan.

The letters of two sisters, Ann Waldo and Susan Brown, to their soldier husbands, showed how the war affected them differently, despite the sisters living together.

Another woman, Mary Burwell, had heard that soldiers who could cook stayed behind the front lines, so in addition to sending her husband hand-knit socks and pipe tobacco, she sent him recipes hoping he’d learn to cook and could stay off of the battlefield.

Margaret McNish Patchin and Sarah Jane Powers, two farmer’s wives, reflected the common struggles women faced trying to sustain farms in their husbands’ absences. Both were confronted with difficult decisions that women were not legally allowed to make, such as signing contracts and handling money.

Powers’ provided the “shortest window of letters, but hers were among the most poignant,” Carr said.

After Powers’ husband died in a hospital from a combat injury, his knapsack was returned home with all her letters to him unopened, as he had never received them.

Carr said many women went on to cope with the loss of their husbands by becoming civic leaders and that the war bolstered the suffrage movement. In 1919, Wisconsin became the first state to ratify the 19th amendment granting women the right to vote – a movement that had started in 1869.

“It is a sad reminder of the barriers and challenges that women who were trying to contribute to the war faced,” Carr said.

Of the greater Stoughton area’s approximately 16,500 voters, 3,575 of them – or around 21.7% – participated in Feb. 18’s state-wide primary election.

There were no local races on the ballot, but Oregonians, Brooklynites and residents of the three surrounding townships voted for one of three state Supreme Court candidates – incumbent Daniel Kelly and challengers Jill Karofsky and Ed Fallone in a nominally nonpartisan race.

The city and four towns all gave Karofsky, a Dane County Circuit Court judge who is backed by progressive groups and i n d iv i d u a l s , t h e m o s t votes.

The City of Stough ton had 1,675 voters, or 21% turnout, with Karofsky receiving 935 votes.

Kelly, who received an endorsement from President Donald Trump and was appointed by former Gov. Scott Walker, came in second with 444 votes, and Ed Fallone, Marquette University law professor who is also progressive, came in third with 275 votes.

In the Town of Pleasant Springs to the n o r t h e a s t o f t h e c i t y, 495 people cast ballots for a 22% turnout.

and Fallone’s 67.

For the Town of Dunkirk to the east, which had a 21.5% turnout, Karofsky received 148 votes. Kelly received 97 and Fallone got 36.

Town of Rutland voters to the west had the highest average turnout, with 22.8% (321 votes).

Karofsky got 188 from Rutland voters, Kelly got 85 and Fallone received 46.

In the Town of Dunn to the northwest, 798 residents voted, or 22.6%. Karofsky tallied 4 3 1 vo t e s , w i t h Ke l l y coming in second at 269 and Fallone in third with 90.

Ke l l y w o n t h e m o s t vo t e s s t a t e - w i d e , w i t h Karofsky coming in second. The two will vie for the 10-year Supreme Court seat on April 7.

There will be two local races on the April 7 ballot, one for school board and one at the county level. For the Stoughton Area School District board, it’s a fourway race for three at-large seats between incumbents Tim Bubon and Steve Jackson and newcomers Holly Telander and Jessica Royko.

For the Dane County Board of Supervisors two-year seat, two candidates, Kate McGinnity and Kris James Breunig will vie for the District 37 seat that incumbent Bob Salov declined to run for this year.

The April 7 election will also feature a Democratic presidential primary race.

City should invest in safer options Recently the Hub has had information about a project to add rafting on the Yahara River near Mandt Park.

This project will cost a lot of money and also the flow of the river may have to be changed.

This is a project that will be used by a small portion of our city, and will there be admission fees to offset the cost?

A project I think would be more logical is to build a new swimming pool/waterpark.

This would benefit a large majority of our city. There

would be an admission fees to help pay for staffing.

I grew up in Stoughton and the only pool we have ever had was the “Mud Hole.” There have been several drownings, and staff have recently had to drain the pool in search of missing swimmers.

Also, consider a roller skating arena for our kids. Let’s think about the kids, keep them busy, active and above all safe.

Working for the chamber taught me much about Stoughton

W

orking for the chamber for the past seven years has taught me a few things about Stoughton.

When I started working for the chamber in 2012, I really felt I already knew Stoughton.

Although my husband, Fred, and I didn’t move here until 1998, we quickly grew deep roots.

Fred worked for the school district, at first working with all the schools in the technology department, then as principal of Kegonsa. We knew many of the teachers and administrators and most of the Kegonsa families.

I was a stay-at-home mom raising three kids but volunteered a lot, so I got to know more people that way.

I was active in Mothers Of Pre-Schoolers (MOPS), served on the Opera House Board when it transitioned from restoration to a working venue and was on a first-name basis with many of the downtown shop owners, since I did most of my shopping in Stoughton rather than Madison.

Our home was hit by the 2005 tornado, and we got to see Stoughton’s community and its generous spirit in a whole new light.

Our daughter was the Syttende Mai princess, so we got a behind-the-scenes look at the festival and the volunteers who make it happen. Our boys played sports, and that expanded our knowledge of Stoughton, too.

Then I got this amazing opportunity to find out how much I didn’t know.

It started with getting to know the business community other than downtown, which was a steep learning curve.

I love downtown and how it contributes to Stoughton’s character, but there is a lot more to

the business community.

There are many people who live and work in Stoughton because of our manufacturers, service providTrotter ers, warehouses, financial institutions, insurance agents and many, many more businesses.

We have over 500 businesses in Stoughton.

Those businesses sponsor our quality of life over and over again. It is fair to say that these drivers of our local economy create the opportunity for us to support our still-viable downtown by letting people earn a living wage here and contributing financially to the things that make our city desirable.

I also learned a lot about Stoughton’s Norwegian culture.

To most people, that culture is simply that we have this Norwegian festival, our school mascot is a Viking and we put up Norwegian flags on Main Street.

However, it is much deeper than that.

Our Norwegian experience is authentic if you look for it. There are many artists and makers vibrantly carrying on Norwegian art forms like hardanger, rosemaling and wood carving. The Norwegian dancers keep their dances and costumes authentic.

Families are still making lefse and rosettes for their holiday traditions.

When I am at state conferences and say I’m from Stoughton, everyone immediately mentions our Norwegian culture. It is real and sought-after.

Other communities need to manufacture their tourism hook,

but ours is organic. When a tour bus comes to Stoughton for a cultural tour, they get Norwegian food from the Sons of Norway, a tour of Stoughton and the Opera House and time at Livsreise.

We also have an art scene that is robust, from the Stoughton Opera House, to the art galleries and the various makers throughout town. But I cringe when people insist that we aren’t Norwegian, but are rather an artist community. Why can’t we celebrate both? Why does one have to take away from the other?

One of the biggest things I learned about Stoughton is that needs to grow.

Before I worked at the chamber, I was indifferent about growth or even against it. The vivid arguments against growing in the early 2000s sounded reasonable to me. I didn’t know it then, but Stoughton doubled in the 1990s and people were very concerned about that trend.

Now I know that with shrinking family sizes, communities have to add housing to simply maintain a student population.

The desire to live here is thwarted by lack of available housing.

We are among the slowest, if not the slowest-growing community in Dane County.

We don’t need to double again, but we do need to keep pace with demand.

So, I had the opportunity to learn a lot about Stoughton in my seven years at the Chamber.

As I prepare to step away from that role, I hope everyone in Stoughton learns as much as they can about how we work as a community so we have informed, active citizens.

Storyteller, humorist and self-described intermittent pig farmer Michael Perry thought he’d have fun by compiling some of the most negative reviews of his two-decade career and building a performance around them.

The New York Times b e s t s e l l i n g Wi s c o n s i n author, who’s known for wry self-deprecation, decided to call his show “Half a Star” – and he’s bringing it to the Stoughton Opera House Thursday, Feb. 27.

“Mostly it’s just me and a microphone, talking and telling stories,” Perry said in a phone interview last week.

The show will feature his brand of humor, but will also include a more serious message.

Perry said in gathering and reading the reviews, he came to see a dark side to the criticism that people sometimes air on social media.

“A lot of this show is

making fun of myself, of course, but then about halfway through this process I stumbled on this idea about how nasty people can be on social media,” he explained.

“A lot of comments are anonymous, and people will say and write horrible things that they wouldn’t in person.”

Perry said while he sometimes receives nasty reviews, he also gets messages from people about how much his work has helped them through a difficult time or lifted their spirits.

Abel Contemporary Gallery is displaying three new art exhibits starting Friday, Feb. 28, until Thursday, April 12.

An opening reception for each display is set to take place from 5-9 p.m. Feb. 28, at the 524 E. Main St. gallery.

Theresa Abel, gallery owner, told the Hub the exhibits include “Deb Gottschalk: Water Speaks the Sky,” “Ancient Modern: Group Show” and “In no. 5: Anna Campbell: Apparatus for a Prototype.”

Abel said visitors will observe Gottschalk’s oil paint renderings of water and sky that depict the artist’s sense of place.

She said the group show will showcase how ancient artifacts influence contemporary pieces. A gallery news release states the group show includes artists Patricia Sannit, Ryan Myers, Nathan Hatch, Alex Mandli, Rick Hintze, Ali Kauss, Andy Rubin, Randall Berndt, Reid Schoonover, Charles Munch, Pranav Sood, Sandra Peterson and Peter Esdaile.

“Apparatus for a Prototype” will delineate, through various disciplines, Campbell’s view of gender equality, Abel said, and what the world might have looked like had civil rights been more prominent much earlier in human history.

‘Water Speaks the Sky’

Gottschalk’s work is all about capturing moments and evoking a feeling of nostalgia, Abel said.

The message Gottschalk conveys is her sense of place or a fond childhood memory, Abel said.

The artist paints scenes the observer might connect with a fond memory of places they would visit when they were younger.

‘Ancient Modern’ group show

Artists, since the beginning of time Abel said, have been inspired by the creations of their ancient predecessors.

The release states this exhibit highlights the connection between archaic art and craft practices, and contemporary art. It will be a demonstration of how past civilizations continue to influence artists working in a variety of modern media, the release states.

Abel said one of the artists, Patricia Sannit creates sculptures that allude to having a function, but aren’t actually functional at all.

Another exhibit artist, Pranav Sood, uses his Indian background on miniature painting to create vibrant and contemporary depictions.

‘Apparatus for a Prototype’

Using sculpture, site specific installation and e p h e m e r a , C a m p b e l l ’s work starts conversations about gender, the release states.

Site specific installations are created to exist in a certain place. Ephemera often comes from visual and written materials that surround the art world of popular culture from a particular era.

Abel said Campell seeks to envision what the world might have looked like if equality were more prominent in the 20th century.

The Stoughton Wellness Coalition will host a health expo that’s open to the public from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Feb. 29, at River Bluff Middle School, 235 N. Forrest St. The event will feature free health screenings, provided by Stoughton Hospital, for blood pressure, bone density, cholesterol and blood sugar.

There will also be 20 minute “TryIt” wellness courses, vendors, door prizes and light refreshments.

Early on in The Age of Reason Thomas Paine tells us what he believes: “I believe in one God, and no more; and I hope for happiness beyond this life.” He goes on to say that be believes in the equality of man and that “religious duties consist in doing justice, loving mercy, and endeavoring to make our fellowcreatures happy.” What made The Age of Reason so controversial was not what Paine believed in, but rather what he did not believe: “I do not believe in the creed professed by the Jewish church, by the Roman church, by the Greek church… nor by any church that I know of.” Despite his clear statement of belief in God, Paine was—and often still is—labeled an atheist. But what he was trying to convey to his readers is the importance of one’s conscience in the realm of belief. Infidelity, Paine contends, “does not consist in believing, or in disbelieving; it consists in professing to believe what he does not believe.” While this may be less radical today than it was two centuries ago, it is still common for religions to require professions of faith, and for people to be shunned, ostracized, or otherwise condemned for not believing in particular articles of faith. Faith can improve our lives in a variety of ways, but we should defend the right of people to believe differently about faith or God, or to not believe at all, or to suspend judgement about these matters. There is something sacred about the free choice to believe when it comes to matters of faith and morals.

You may not realize it, but the food you consume most likely is grown and harvested from farmers — and the clothes you’re wearing are most likely made out of cotton.

FFA is a very unique club at Stoughton High School. We are a club/ chapter that’s also supported by our Stoughton FFA Alumni. Our main focus is agriculture — within our club, our members each have what we an Supervised Agricultural Experience or SAE. It sounds intimidating but in summary — it’s what you’re interested in within agriculture. Everything from dairy entrepreneurship to beef production to horticulture. The most interesting thing is learning from each other.

Stoughton FFA is all about leadership, getting involved and learning new things. Each year we sell fruit, nuts and cheese in the fall; and when spring rolls around, we sell strawberries. Also, our plant sale happens around Mothers Day each year.

Anyone at SHS or within our community can purchase our plants.

T h e S t o u g h t o n F FA Alumni and Supporters Chapter had a lot to celebrate at the 2020 Wisconsin FFA Alumni Convention in Waukesha.

Stoughton was named the top chapter in the state with a gold rating in the National Outstanding Chapter Contest. They also received a gold rating for the newsletter contest. The National Chapter application will be forwarded to Nationals for competition.

Stoughton entered the Division 1 Oconomowoc Sectional with wrestlers at 12 of the 14 weight classes.

The Vikings will have wrestlers at half of the weight classes at the individual state tournament after a strong showing in Oconomowoc on Saturday, Feb. 22, with the hopes of adding to its state-record 51 state champions.

Stoughton 120-pounder Nicolar Rivera will look to follow up

his 106-pound state title last season by staying undefeated in his prep career. Rivera earned his 100th career victory with a forfeit win over Janesville Craig’s Juan Armas to start the sectional, then went on to pin Lake Geneva Badger’s Robert Zilskie in 2:57 and Milton’s Royce Nilo at the 3:59 mark of their championship bout.

“It’s a really cool accomplishment,” Rivera said of reaching 100 wins, “but it’s really just another step along the way.”

in the first round at state, which begins Thursday, Feb. 27, at the Kohl Center in Madison. Competition is slated to start at 3 p.m.

“It’s really just another tournament,” Mechler said. “People like to hype it up because it’s state, but the game plan is going to stay the same for me, no matter who I wrestle.”

Empey qualified for his third state tournament with three first-period pins. He took down Milton’s Jordan Hergert in 34

seconds, Delavan-Darien’s Logan Hermann in 42 seconds and Fort Atkinson’s Mika Gutoski in 1:38.

Empey will face New Berlin West/Eisenhower junior Noah Nieberle (25-13) in the first round.

“I’ve kept the same mindset throughout this season,” Empey said. “I have to go one match at a time, and there’s four more to get.”

Stoughton freshman Evan Schmidt proved in his first season he’s already one of the premier distance swimmers in the state.

Schmidt captured two medals at the Division 2 state meet on Friday, Feb. 21, at the University of Wisconsin Natatorium. He finished fourth in the 500-yard freestyle with a season-best time of 4:48.16, and took fifth in the 200 free with a season-best time of 1:47.49.

“This is more than I was hoping for this year,” Schmidt said. “At the beginning of the year, I was just hoping to get top eight at state. To be top six in both of my events made me really happy.”

Schmidt entered the state meet as the top seed in the 500 free by .04 seconds

ahead of Elkhorn senior Willy Pinnow. Cedarburg freshman Isaac Fleig won the gold in the 500 free (4:39.24).

Edgewood senior and Boston University recruit Nate Frucht won the gold in the 200 free (1:41.30).

One area Schmidt improved in throughout the season was his kick.

“I have been working on my dolphin kicks all year, so that was a big part,” he said. “I did those into the wall and that really helped me pass those guys in the end.”

Senior Conner Clark, who won the Stoughton’s first state medal in 24 years after taking sixth in the 100 butterfly last season, closed out his prep career with a pair of seventh-place finishes. He recorded a

“We’ve put in all of the work all year, so there’s no need to recreate the wheel at state,” Model said. “I just have to keep working, stay in shape, keep moving and stay on offense.”

Sophomore Trent Dow (132), junior Rudy Detweiler (195) and freshman Griffin Empey (285) each qualified for state with second-place finishes at the sectional.

Dow beat Milton’s Zak Shore by 23-8 tech fall and Delavan-Darien’s Owen Chelminiak 4-1 before falling by 10-0 major decision to Lake Geneva Badger’s Jake Stritesky in the championship match. He secured his state spot after Chelminiak won his semifinal wrestleback.

Dow (39-11) will take on West Bend East senior Cayden Henschel (43-1) in his first match at state.

“At Stoughton, it’s the standard to make it to state,” Dow said. “I’m going there expecting to win by taking it one match at a time and listening to my coaches.”

Detweiler will also be making his first appearance after nearly winning a sectional title. He p i n n e d M i l t o n ’s C a l e b Peters in 2:09 and beat Beloit Memorial’s Tyler Sireci 10-7, then lost to Janesville Craig’s Mitchell Schumann 7-6 in the championship match despite Schumann only recording one takedown.

“I really wanted to win the last match because it would’ve given me a better seed at state,” Detweiler said. “I want to get in the top six and place, but winning is the ultimate goal.”

Detwiler (26-4) secured his state berth after Sireci won his semifinal wrestleback, and will look to upset undefeated Neenah senior Marshall Kools (40-0) in the first round.

Griffin Empey pinned Janesville Craig’s Braeden Hopkins in 3:33 and beat M o n o n a G r ove / M c Fa rland’s Kristian Schlicht 5-2, then lost to Lake Geneva Badger’s Kyle Freund 5-2 in the championship match.

He qualified after Schlicht won his semifinal wrestleback.

“I’ve wanted to go to state all year,” Griffin Empey said. “I’ve had some setbacks and progressions, but I’m thankful to get past sectionals.”

The freshman heavyweight’s qualification was a proud moment for Bob Empey, who will have the opportunity to coach both of his sons at state.

“It’s a tribute to the program and experiences

they’ve had up to this point,” Bob Empey said.

“As a coach and a dad, you want your kids to be part of a program like this.”

Griffin Empey (36-15) said his goal is to place just like his brother did as a freshman. He will have to go through Mukwonago senior Tyler Pitcel (38-8) in the first round.

Chance Suddeth (106) and Brandt Spilde (170) each finished one spot out of state qualification.

Suddeth (44-7) pinned Janesville Parker’s Ian Ramirez in 3:53, then lost to Elkhorn/Faith Christian’s Joey Showalter 4-1. He bounced back to beat Delavan-Darien’s Mason Hennessey by 17-1 tech fall in the semifinal wrestleback, but did not get a chance to wrestle for second after Showalter lost the championship bout.

For the seventh consecutive year and 14th time in program history, Stoughton is headed back to the Division 1 team state tournament.

The Vikings, who have won the last two team state titles, cruised to a 55-21 victory over team sectional host Janesville Craig on Tuesday, Feb. 18.

“It means a tremendous amount to everyone in our program, especially the seniors,” Stoughton coach Bob Empey said. “That group attending the team state tournament all four years is really something special.”

The Badger South Conference champions improved to 21-2 in dual competition and never trailed against the Big Eight Conference champion Cougars.

Stoughton’s Alex Wicks started the dual at 126 pounds with a pin of Koda Jimenez in 47 seconds.

“I haven’t started a match in awhile,” Wicks said. “I’ve been wrestling all year at a higher weight, but since I’m back at my main weight late in the season, I’ve got in the groove of how I want to be wrestling. I’m lighter on my feet and not so tense.”

The team state tournament will be at UW Field House in Madison. Teams will be seeded on Saturday, Feb. 29, and posted after seed meetings. The quarterfinal round will start at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, March 6, and will be followed by the two semifinal duals.

The state championship is set for 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 7.

The Vikings enter the team state tournament ranked third in Division 1 behind Mukwonago and Kaukauna. Mukwonago defeated Stoughton 48-25 at the Zelinski Memorial Duals on Jan. 25.

“If we’re healthy, we’ve got a shot,” Bob Empey said. “We prepare a little differently; we’ve learned through the years what we should and shouldn’t do.”

Team state tickets are available for sale in the Stoughton High School main office during office hours. Tickets are $15 and good for Friday’s quarterfinals and semifinals.

Vikings earn top sectional seed MARK NESBITT Assistant sports editor

Stoughton will begin its postseason run as the No. 1 seed in the top half of the Division 2 McFarland Sectional.

The Vikings (18-3, 11-2 Badger South Conference), ranked sixth in the Division 2 Associated Press state poll, earned the top seed after clinching at least a share of the Badger South title with two conference wins last week.

“The kids earned it,” Stoughton coach Nolan Weber said of the conference title and No. 1 seed. “We found ways to win when things were not going our way.”

Stoughton stymied Oregon in a 54-28 home win on Tuesday, Feb. 18, then hung on for a road win over Fort Atkinson on Friday, Feb. 20.

Senior Adam Hobson scored a gamehigh 28 points to propel the Vikings to a win over the Blackhawks.

Stoughton hung on in the second half after leading 26-22 at halftime. Fort Atkinson used a 2-3 zone to try to bottle up the Vikings.

“They did a great job of scheming to

take away our driving lanes to force us to shoot it over the top,” Weber said. “We did a better job of getting the ball to Adam in the middle of the zone in the second half.”

Hobson made three of the Vikings’ six 3-pointers. Sophomore Luke Fernholz added eight points and senior Nathan Hutcherson hit two 3s for six points.

Stoughton 54, Oregon 28

The Vikings used a 1-3-1 zone to force turnovers and jumpstart their offense in a win over the Panthers.

Stoughton broke the game open with a 21-2 run to start the second half. Hobson posted a double-double with a game-high 23 points and 10 rebounds.

“A big key to our whole season is we get what we get on offense because of our defense,” Hobson said. “We limit them to one shot and tough shots, and then we turn our defense into offense. They obviously didn’t shoot as well as they normally do and that is a credit to our defense.”

Hobson scored 10 points during the surge, including two of his four 3-pointers. He also threw down a dunk to push the Vikings’ lead to 34-17 with 15:01 left.

“It was a great moment and a high-energy play in a big conference game against

our rival,” Hobson said. “It’s a fun memory I will have. We did a great job of forcing turnovers, but we forced them naturally in our defense. We didn’t get outside of ourselves. We stayed within the rules of our defense and got them the right way.”

Weber has come to expect strong defense, rebounding and play-making ability from Hobson.

“It was good to see him makie shots,” Weber said. “He has struggled at times to make shots consistently, especially in this gym for some reason. It was nice to see him shoot them out of their zone early in the second half.”

Fernholz and junior Konner Knauf had back-to-back steals and layups to extend Stoughton’s lead to 43-17. Oregon had eight turnovers the first seven minutes of the second half.

“We have three different defenses that we play, and our 1-3-1 is only getting better and kind of becoming our second defense,” Weber said. “It changes our pace. Our man (defense) slows teams down a little bit and hopefully our 1-3-1 speeds teams up.”

Clark was .25 seconds away from a medal in the fly and .33 seconds away from a medal in the IM. Edgewood senior and Wisconsin recruit Truman teDuits, captured the state title in the fly (49.52) and IM (1:50.03).

“I wasn’t super in the race,” Clark said of the fly.

“It’s still a best time and a school record. I can’t complain about that.”

Clark said he felt good about his performance in the IM. “I really pushed the breaststroke hard and I had a really good breaststroke split,” he said. “I took out the first two splits really easy and came back fast.”

The two swimmers racked up 53 points for Stoughton, good for 16th place.

Edgewood won seven of the 12 events to repeat as state champions. The Crusaders finished with 293 points.

Clark said he will take a break and swim over the summer. He’s planning on swimming in college, but is undecided between South Dakota State, UW-Eau Claire and UW-Oshkosh.

“Those are the top three right now,” he said. “I’m still going to train to stay in shape.”

Schmidt is looking forward to how much time he can drop next year if he tapers for the state meet and not the sectional.

“It gives me some confidence going into next year,” he said. “I will know what this atmosphere is like.”

The Vikings hurt themselves with penalties in a 10-0 loss to the Warriors on Thursday, Feb. 20, at Waupun Community Center.

Waupun (17-6-2), the second seed in the Saint Mary’s Springs Sectional, entered the game ranked fourth in the Division 2 Wisconsin Prep Hockey Coaches Poll and wasted no time marking the scoreboard.

The Icebergs returned the favor by beating the Hilltoppers 2-1 in a Division 1 regional championship game Thursday, Feb. 20, at the Onalaska Omni Center.

The Icebergs (5-17-2), seeded sixth in the Sun Prairie Sectional, snapped a three-game losing streak with the victory over the third-seeded Hilltoppers thanks to a fast start.

T h e S t o u g h t o n b ow l ing team is headed to the Division 2 Wisconsin High School Bowling Club State Championships for the first time in program history.

The Vikings posted an 8-2 record in District 4 this season to secure this spot at state, which will take place March 6-8 at Dale’s Weston Lanes in Wausau.

Stoughton will be one of 72 co-ed club bowling teams at the Division 2 state tournament. There will be 145 total teams.

O n S a t u r d a y, M a r c h 7, the Vikings will bowl 15 baker’s-style games.

Each member on the team bowls two frames.

The top five teams will advance to the semifinals later that day.

D aw n M a r i e H e n s o n , age 50, of Stoughton, passed away on Sunday, Feb. 23, 2020, at Agrace HospiceCare. She was born on Aug. 12, 1969, in the Naval Hospital in Oakland, California, the daughter of Arnold and Ellen (Albert) Trouwborst.

Dawn married Jeffrey Farley on Aug. 5, 2001.

Dawn was generous and kind with a great sense of humor. Her kind heart led her to become a foster parent for 3 1/2 years, where she formed a bond with each family she helped.

In addition to fostering children, she also fostered dogs. She was a lover of plants, inside and out.

Dawn was a crafty small business owner, creating a n d s e l l i n g eve r y t h i n g from hair bows to dog treats. Dawn had a knack for turning used items into beautiful projects. She was a founding member of Spindletop Roller Girls.

Dawn was stubborn and determined, and no matter what problems she faced, she was always there for her friends and loved ones.

She was a fierce advocate for her children, a true mama bear.

And Teressa loved her family deeply. You could most often find Teresa sewing, playing cards and cooking for her family and anyone else in need. Teressa leaves a legacy of caring for others spending 14 years in nursing including hospice director in Baraboo.

Stoughton, having owned a downtown jewelry store there for decades. And that one of the teachers, instructor Colleen Wermuth, shared her birthday with Harriette.

“It was more than coincidental,” said Shorehaven social worker Jan Braun.

“This connection was truly meant to be.”

More than 60 first grader-authored cards arrived at Shorehaven this week, with inscriptions “100 is Cool and So Are You,” “When I’m a 100 I’m going to own an arcade, movie theater, pizza place and a bowling alley,” and “When I’m 100 I’ll turn into a Cat Lady.”

Other students scrawled “I love 100 and I love you too,” and “When I’m 100 I’ll take more naps,” “I hope you get a laptop on your birthday” and “I hope you get 100 presents.” One young man simply said, “When I’m 100 I’ll watch more football.”

“It’s a win-win for the students and for Harriette.

The children learned about aging and a reason to celebrate all birthdays. “What a wonderful thing that people can reach out in kindness to someone they don’t even know.”

In the meantime, Harriette is opening more than 200 cards during her birthday week, connecting with friends across the country, those who share her love for reading, hiking, flying, and symphonies, from fellow soup kitchen volunteers, international students and PEO group members.

“Harriette has always connected with all types of people,” said Braun. “And she didn’t have to turn 100 to realize that she is forever surrounded by all types of love.”

“It’s been a good couple of years; we’ve got a good core group here working with (principal) Erin (Conrad) and the teaching staff – where they need help, we are happy to do that.”

This holiday season, Kegonsa Working For Kids held its first “Giving Tree” event, working with school to confidentially identify around 30 students from families in need, with each student getting three items to ask for. The group also gathered monetary donations to buy wrapping supplies and grocery gift cards for 10 families, with plans to

expand the program this year. “(It’s) either direct classr o o m s u p p o r t o r ove rall support, or (hearing), ‘Teachers could use this in the break room,’” she said.

“Wherever we can help.”

Conrad said the group has worked tirelessly in support of the school’s students, educators and families, noting that the library funding includ ed purchasing many new diverse titles, and books to

supplement the district’s n ew E n g l i s h L a n g u a g e Arts curriculum.

“They care deeply that students have opportunities for extracurricular activities,” she wrote the Hub in an email Monday. “We are so grateful for our village of parents and families that support all that we do at Kegonsa.”

When media specialist Kristin Rosenberg started at Kegonsa Elementary School, the average publishing date of books was 1995, she said. That gave her concerns about the age and accuracy of the nonfiction section.

When she and principal Erin Conrad talked about ways to update the collection with the help of the more than $12,000 donated by Kegonsa Working For Kids, they wanted to prepare for the new ELA curriculum by updating the nonfiction section.

“Nonfiction books are more expensive than fiction, so it’s harder to buy a lot of them at once,” Rosenberg emailed the Hub. “They have photographers, editors, researchers, etc, so it makes sense that high quality nonfiction is more expensive.”

She and Conrad started by ordering books classes have asked for that are also recommended by the new curriculum, on topics like state history, habitats or specific animals.

“We can hit the ground running when we get started in the fall,” she wrote, noting that recent purchases have moved the library’s average publishing age “up” to 2002.

The second Kegonsa Night with the Capitols is set for 6 p.m. Saturday, March 7, at the Capitol Ice Arena, 2616 Pleasant View Road, Middleton.

For each $15 admission, $5 will go to Kegonsa Elementary School’s Working For Kids for help with school needs, and the team will split the 50/50 raffle evenly with WFK. Kegonsa’s WFK group has a connection through a school educator with the Madison Capitols, a Tier I junior team in United States Hockey League that started in 2014, Kegonsa WFK board member Tiffany Greenheck told the Hub. She said she hopes the event continues to grow as both a way to let students have some fun and raise money for the school.

“This year it’s a Star Wars theme, so there will be characters there, and they’ll be inviting kids onto the ice to sing the National Anthem before the game,” Greenheck told the Hub last week. “They give all the kids free ice skate rentals and allow them to go out and skate on the ice with the team after the game, and that was really cool.”

Q. How can I spot depression in elders?

A. We all have days in which we are sad or have thoughts of hopelessness – but for many, it goes beyond that.

Depression (major depressive disorder or clinical depression) is, by definition, a medical illness characterized by a chronic sense of sadness and loss of interest in activities. Depression can often dictate the way in which you feel, think, and act – and if not treated, it can lead to everything from alcohol and drug abuse to attempted suicide.

It’s estimated that 350 million people worldwide suffer from depression. More than two million adults 65 years of age and older are faced with depression of some kind.

Signs of depression are easy to overlook in older adults, as they’re often mistaken for other signs of aging. Studies show that when depressed, seniors may not clearly display typical signs of sadness such as crying. Instead, they tend to withdraw from the people they care about and the things they once loved to do.

Signs to watch for: Irritability, withdraw, decrease in cognitive ability, increased pain and digestive problems.

If you recognize any of these signs in your senior loved one, talk to him or her about what he or she is feeling.

Although you may receive some resistance initially, it’s important to let him or her know that you’re there to help. From there, it’s vital that you inform his or her primary health care provider or mental health expert to have symptoms assessed professionally.

Q. How can I improve my credit score?

A. Having a balance of at least half of your credit card limit can reduce your credit scores from 10-15 points. If you max out your credit cards you can expect a 60-100 point drop. The best rule of thumb in regards to revolving credit cards is to carry a balance less than 30% of your limit. Also, don’t close your credit cards as it reduces your total spending limit, which can also drop your scores.
