Caroling comforts Unified Newspaper Group

The Sons of Norway brought holiday cheer into the homes of members of the Stoughton community on Monday, Dec. 30.

For over a decade, the group has traveled around Stoughton, caroling at members’ homes and delivering bags of treats in a tradition known as Julebukking.

The Scandanvian custom takes place during the week between Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve.

Originally participants dressed in goatskins to conceal their identity as they carol to neighbors homes.

The homeowners would then have to guess who each caroler was.

Although Sons of Norway members don’t dress in goat skin costumes, Arneson says it is a popular outreach activity especially for those who aren’t physically able to attend meetings or who have been ill. Carolers visit individual homes, nursing homes and apartment complexes.

“It is so much fun for those going out as it gives us a chance to sing,

to see our members and others we know, and to bring some joy to them,” Darlene Arneson, president of the group, said.

Founded in 1895, The Sons of Norway is the largest Norwegian-American organization in the world. Julebukking continues the groups original purpose of protecting members and their families from the financial hardships during times of sickness or death. According to its website, the goal of the group has since expanded

The Town Board reappointed Hasslinger for another three years on Dec. 16, continuing a long career with the Town of Dunn.

Hasslinger has deep ties to the area, growing up near Dunn, and made her first foray into city government work when she became the town’s business manager in 2001.

Since then, she’s says there have been real changes in how the city is run, but one of the things she takes pride in as part of the Town of Dunn government is how little

There will be at least one new alder, one new school board member and one new Dane County Board supervisor in Stoughton after April.

This spring’s election will have a four-person contest for three school board seats and a contest between Kate McGinnity and Kris James Breunig in District 37, for which incumbent Bob Salov is not running.

There are no contested races in the nearby towns that hold to the state’s traditional nominating process, which concluded at 5 p.m.

Jan. 7. The Town of Rutland, however, unlike the others, has not determined its candidates because it will hold a caucus Jan. 21.

Pleasant Springs will have at least one new supervisor, though candidates for that seat were set to be determined in the Jan. 7

Term: Reassessment looks to be “a big undertaking”

Dredging project contract awarded $3.25 million for work between lakes Monona and Waubesa Dane County is one step closer to starting a massive dredging project aiming to help improve water flow and wildlife habitat on the Yahara Chain of Lakes.

Dredgit Corporation will be awarded a contract worth around $3.25 million to begin the first phase of Dane County’s Yahara Chain of Lakes Sediment Removal Project, the county announced in a Dec. 30 news release. It’s the first phase

in the multi-year project to improve water flow, flood storage capacity, and fish and wildlife habitat, and it’s planned for this spring between lakes Monona and Waubesa.

Lake Kegonsa, just north of Stoughton, is downstream of those two lakes, and drains through the Yahara River in the city.

While specific project timelines are still being prepared, County Executive Joe Parisi wrote that work will this year will also include forming a sediment removal crew to “accelerate” future phases.

“As climate change rains continue to impact our area,

Dane County is committed to mitigating future flooding risks and increasing the flow of water through the Yahara Chain of Lakes,” he said in the news release.

The multi-year sediment removal project is planned in five phases, with each carried out as the county secures permitting.

County officials hope to remove between two and three feet of sediment about 50 feet wide and 1.5 miles long during the first phase. Sediment removal in this location could improve water quality, habitat, navigation and the rate at which water leaves the Yahara

Lakes in the wake of heavy rains, according to the news release.

The dredging effort is an attempt to change the flow of water moving through the lakes, which comes in faster than it goes out, meaning two inches of rain takes more than two weeks to leave the system, according to the news release. At least 8.5 million pounds of sediment are estimated to enter the Yahara River and lakes each year from urban runoff.

things have changed in terms of adding things like major new subdivisions.

“That is by design,” Hasslinger said, alluding to ordinances and programs the town has installed over the past 40 years to restrict development.

During this term, however, the town will undergo some important events and updates, she said.

One is making Town Hall more accessible to ease voting in a presidential election year.

“It’s not unusual for us to have a line out the door and into the parking lot,” said Hasslinger of voting at Dunn’s town hall.

The town will also have extended early voting hours and the addition of new voting machines that are handicapped-accessible.

Another major push by the town will come in the form of a town-wide revaluation of real estate in 2021, says Hasslinger. That will adjust values significantly and could come as a shock to some homeowners, when they see their assessments jump by 25 percent on average.

She said the reassessment, which will cost between $108,000 and $140,000, will mean a major public education effort for the city, both in terms of encouraging residents to assist in making the reassessment accurate and allaying fears that an increased assessment means they’ll pay more in taxes.

In general, tax rates will drop by the same amount that assessments rise, so while some homes will increase by more and some will increase by less, on average, it will have no effect on taxes.

“It’s a big undertaking,” said Hasslinger.

Ultimately, said Hasslinger, its projects like these that are what she loves most about her job.

“It just naturally has that rhythm that keeps you connected with the community,” she said.

Election: Incumbent Jensen, newcomer Tilleson to square off in District 3 aldermanic race presidential election and U.S. House of Representatives. No primaries for the U.S. Senate will be held in Wisconsin this year.

Statewide, there are two people hoping to unseat David Kelly as a justice on the Wisconsin Supreme Court, Ed Fallone and Jill Karofsky. The seat is nominally nonpartisan, though each candidate is backed by traditionally conservative or liberal groups.

Fred Hundt is the only person running for a spot vacated by Ben Heili in District 4, as Heili chose not to seek re-election.

Hundt is a former Stoughton Area School District board member and former owner of Sensible Painting.

Three school board seats are open with four

candidates planning to run this spring, with incumbents Tim Bubon and Steve Jackson to be joined on the ballot by newcomers Holly Telander and Jessica Royko.

Jon Coughlin, elected for the first time in 2006, along with Bubon and Jackson, is not seeking re-election.

All seats are for threeyear terms and are elected at-large, meaning all voters within the district are able to vote on each representative.

Jackson wrote the Hub in an email the current board has really worked hard on leadership, governance, support for staff, strategic planning, and overall performance.

“I feel it’s important to maintain that consistency so we can continue to move the district forward,” he wrote. “We have some very good programs across the district, and staff have really been working hard to address the learning needs of all our students.

We’ve been hitting the issue of equity head on, thanks to leadership within the administration, educators, students, and board.”

Bubon wrote to the Hub that he’s also planning to run to continue the work that the school board is

doing within the community.

“I hope to build upon much of the work and progress we’ve made as a district over the past three years, especially as it relates to the work we’re doing to strengthen collaboration with the community and key stakeholders,” he said.

Telander, a former math and Spanish teacher who runs an academic consulting business, working with both families and school districts, said she’s running because she feels “ready to have a voice” in increasing parent involvement, engagement and support, and advocating for teacher wellness initiatives.

“Research has shown unequivocally that teacher wellness directly impacts student performance and learning outcomes,” she wrote in an email to the Hub. R oy ko t u r n e d i n h e r paperwork and notified the school district after the Hub’s Tuesday press deadline.

This year, Supervisor 3 and Supervisor 4 seats are open for two-year terms beginning in April, with those seats held by Jay Damkoehler and Janiece Bolender, respectively.

Bolender is not seeking re-election.

Town chair, Supervisor 1 and Supervisor 2 are elected each odd-numbered year.

Town of Rutland

The Town of Rutland has two supervisor positions open for the spring election and will nominate candidates at the annual caucus at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 21, at the town hall, 785 Center Road.

Terms are for two years.

Supervisor seats held by Nancy Nedveck and Deana Zentner are open. As of last month, neither had filed non-candidacy paperwork.

Dane County

The greater Stoughton area will have one new representative on the Dane County Board of Supervisors.

The other three supervisor seats in the greater Stoughton area – Carl Chenoweth in the City of Stoughton, Patrick Miles in the Town of Dunn and Melissa Ratcliff to the city’s northeast – all have incumbents running unopposed.

The race for Multi-Jurisdictional Municipal Judge at the county level is also

up for re-election, and incumbent Matthew Roethe is the only person who filed to run for the seat.

Dane County Circuit Court Judge William Hanrahan is also up for re-election, as are three Court of Appeals seats.

The Stoughton Area school board could be down to eight members for a few months after Jon Coughlin announced Monday night he’s moving out of the district.

Coughlin told the board he bought a house in Janesville and will likely leave the board “early next month.”

Elected in 2015, his seat is up for re-election in April, along with those of Tim Bubon and Steve

Jackson, who are running again. Couhglin announced last month he would not seek re-election, and his seat will likely be filled by the only other candidate to turn in paperwork, educational consultant Holly Telander.

In an email to the Hub Tuesday, Coughlin said serving on the board was a “fulfilling privilege.”

“My school board campaign three years ago was my first attempt at growing roots in a community in my adult life,” he wrote. “The Stoughton Area School District is full of caring, ambitious professionals, and I would have been proud to send my own children to

Stoughton schools someday.”

School board president Frank Sullivan said the board is going to wait to find out the exact timing of Coughlin’s resignation before deciding whether to appoint someone to temporarily fill the role for a few months or just wait until the election April 7.

“His term was up this spring, anyway, and he wasn’t running, so we’ll see how the timing shakes out and what our statutory obligations are,” he wrote in an email to the Hub. Sullivan called Coughlin “a good man who works hard, thinks deeply, and says what is on his mind,”

and said he brought a valuable perspective to the board as a parent of a young child.

“He and Andrea are examples of the young people Stoughton needs to attract and retain if we are to thrive as a community and a school district,” Sullivan wrote. “They are at the point in their lives where they want to buy a house and put down long-term roots. The fact that they have to leave Stoughton to do it should be a wake up call for the City Council as it continues to discuss the housing developments that we need to keep our community growing in a reasonable, sustainable way.”

Full Nelson Stoughton High School senior offensive tackle Jack Nelson, who graduated early to attend the University of Wisconsin, played in the All-American Bowl in San Antonio on Jan. 4, an annual game featuring the nation’s top high school seniors.

District superintendent Tim Onsager filled in board and audience members at Monday night’s meeting, and he said from what people told him, Nelson “turned a lot of heads.” “(He) not only held his own, but impressed a lot of folks,” Onsager said. “Congratulations to Jack. He will be starting (school) at Wisconsin this month, so we wish him all the best.”

Nelson was UW’s first commitment in its class of 2020, signing during his sophomore year. He’s a four-star prospect, according to 247sports, and is the nation’s No. 14 ranked offensive tackle and No. 148 ranked player in the class of 2020.

The Stoughton High School Dance team traveled to La Crosse on Saturday, Feb. 2, 2019 for the State Dance Championships, sponsored by the WIAA. The team fell just short of finishing in the top 10 in both Division 2 Jazz and Division 2 Pom. On Saturday, Feb. 9, 2019 the varsity dance team hosted the first Badger Conference Dance Showcase at Stoughton High School. Teams from both the Badger North and Badger South performed.

A jury trial for the 2017 homicide of a Stoughton man has been postponed.

The trial for Ted Bruno, who is accused of murdering his roommate Kim Gaida at their Felland Street home, was originally scheduled to start this week. The jury trial dates were scheduled on Oct. 7, but were later rescheduled because Bruno added, “By Reason of Mental Disease of Defect” to his not guilty plea Oct. 24.

Dates for the rescheduled trial have yet to be decided. A status conference for Bruno’s trial was scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 8.

Bruno was found competent to stand trial by Judge Wi l l i a m H a n r a h a n l a s t

October based on a doctor’s report.

Bruno spent almost a year in Bruno Mendota Mental Health Institute starting in October 2018, receiving court-ordered medication to treat delusions and disorganized thinking so that he could be deemed competent to stand trial.

On Nov. 27, 2017, Bruno is alleged to have stabbed Gaida 11 times with a knife during an argument at the home on Felland Street, breaking the knife off in Gaida’s throat. He told police he had left the house after subduing Gaida and returned to make sure he was dead, according to the criminal complaint produced by the district attorney.

while ago, I heard of a person who was active in her church and community. She volunteered for a lot of things.

This woman became self-centered, caring only for what fulfilled her. And yet while she became self fulfilled, she became depressed and dissatisfied with life. She did not find happiness.

I know another woman who is very happy in life, filled with peace and joy. People like to be around her, because they catch her joyful spirit.

She does not try to be self fulfilled. Her attention and focus is on the people she is looking at, not on herself.

She cares about people and their struggles, but they do not become her struggles. Love and joy dominate her life.

The odd thing about fulfillment is we attain it best by caring about and loving other people, by giving ourselves to others we can find happiness and purpose If my goal is to fulfill myself, I can become self centered. I could view other people in terms of what can they do for me so I can be fulfilled. I could see the people I interact with as a means to get that self-fulfillment I

desire.

If my goal is to love people for their sake, not for mine, I am not looking at how I can use them, I am looking at the Budnar person, what is important to them, what are their blessings, what are their struggles.

After I see this, if I can help in some way, I offer to help. Even if I don’t do anything else, I have given this person understanding and respect.

This can bring some happiness and peace for happiness and peace can come simply from understanding and respect.

As I give it to them they give it back in return. This is the nature of love. We give ourselves to benefit others and then find we are blessed.

By doing this, we are not self fulfilled. We are fulfilled through one another. This makes us a community.

There is always risk in opening yourself to helping people.

Unfortunately, there are people who might seek to take advantage of you or to use you for their own ends. To decrease this risk, I try to grow to wisdom and ask what is the best way to truly help someone.

Sometimes people are better helped when I don’t do what

they want.

Sometimes people want things that are not loving, just and merciful. For people in this situation, I pray they can change what they want in life.

When an engaged couple comes to get married at St. Ann’s, I ask each of them a question on behalf of the Church: Are you getting married for the good of your intended spouse? They always say yes.

I do not ask them if they are getting married for their own good or for their own self fulfillment. That’s because love for your spouse can be more important than love for yourself.

If someone is using their spouse for self fulfillment, the odds of the relationship ending badly is high, because they are using their spouse.

Love does not want to use people. Love wants to care for someone for their own sake.

When a person says his or her spouse’s happiness is more important than even their own happiness and that person’s spouse says the same, the odds of the relationship growing in love in good times and in bad times is huge.

Now that we are in the New Year, I suggest this can be the year to find fulfillment by loving all the people around you for their sake.

Virtual dementia tour, Jan. 15

The public can take a walk in the shoes of someone with dementia next week with a virtual dementia tour.

The tours, facilitated by Azura Memory Care, will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 15, at the facility located at 1221 E. Main St. Reservations are required

by Tuesday, Jan. 14.

Visitors will start by engaging in a 10-minute sensory experience that gives those with full cognition the ability to understand what dementia sounds, looks and feels like, an event news release states.

The tour, created by Second Wind Dreams, uses educational resources to provide family and professional caregivers a window inside the challenges of the condition. During the remainder of the tour, attendees will also have the opportunity to meet with tour specialists and use devices to alter their senses, the release states, and be given tasks in an adapted environment.

There are three 45-minute tour sessions available and space is limited, the release stated.

An informational meeting is being held to discuss the proposed recreational trail connecting Stoughton to Madison.

The meeting is set for 7 p.m.

Wednesday, Jan. 15, at Pleasant Springs Town Hall, 2354 Cty. Hwy. N. During the meeting, Dane County Park officials and

representatives from KL Engineering Firm will talk about the latest phase in the Lower Yahara River Trail project which connects the Fish Camp County Park in the Town of Dunn to Lake Kegonsa State Park in The Town of Pleasant Springs.

Planning for Phase 2 of the trail is anticipated to be completed by fall of 2020, according to a news release.

In the summer of 2017, the first phase of the Lower Yahara River Trail was completed between McDaniel Park in the Village of McFarland and

Lake Farm County Park near the Capital City Bike Trail in Madison.

Dane County Parks is also coordinating with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources to extend the non-motorist trail through Lake Kegonsa State Park to Williams Drive in the Town of Pleasant Springs.

History • Supply and demand: It’s a basic economic principle, and the basis for a multi-phase, multi-million dollar 10-year renovation/ expansion project under way at Stoughton Hospital.

The first phase includes a remodel of the hospital’s entire lower level, including the food and nutrition services and material services departments and Bryant Health Education Center, a popular meeting and conference room.

• Dane County officials got a bigger response than they had bargained for in a pair of public hearings about a plan to tighten construction rules near area waterways. After several public discussions along the way, this was essentially the last shot for significant public input before the plan is submitted to the Department of Natural Resources.

Two hearings Nov. 17-18 packed curious and concerned property owners to the Verona Senior Center

and the Sun Prairie City Office.

• A 6-3 vote Monday by the Stoughton Area School Board of Education puts the district one step closer to announcing preparations for an April referendum.

The board’s vote was to ask its Finance Committee to “investigate questions surrounding a referendum with regard to timing, amount, type, etc. and report its findings at the next regularly scheduled board meeting, Dec. 21.

• First, it was a renovated mezzanine in 2007.

Next came a remodel of the children’s area in 2008.

Now the most-used area of the Stoughton Public Library has just finished a near $22,000 facelift, and it was completely funded by community donations.

The library’s circulation area is the first and last stop patrons see as they enter and exit the main doors.

Which is why, according to library director Jaime Vache, the 20-year-old area

needed to make a good impression.

• “We don’t need to have ourselves painted in a corner with our own paintbrush … because of self-imposed deadlines. Keep in mind, a bad plan is worse.” Board member Pat Volk’s sentiment during the latter part of Monday’s Board of Education meeting seemed to resonate with fellow members, who voted unanimously to move forward with soliciting public input for an April referendum.

• Most of the city recreation department’s winter activities are divided by age groups and sex, however, on Monday evenings, December 8 and 15, the department will offer a mixed program.

As the Christmas season emphasizes family unity and due to the shortage of women as local stores are open on Monday evening during the holiday season, the fitness class will be offering volleyball on the next two Mondays for both men and women.

• Any evaluation of law enforcement in the sixties would be meaningless without a last a cursory look at the crime picture for that period. During 1960, there were 2,014,600 serious crimes reported. While complete statistics for 1969 are not yet available, preliminary reports show that crime rose 9 percent during the first 6 months when compared with the first half of 1968. Almost 4.6 million serious crimes were recorded in 1968.

• Stoughton reached another milestone — its 1970 tax levy topped the $1 million mark for the first time in history. Following approval by the city

council Tuesday night, after the advertised public hearing, the new budget totals $1,054,365.25 — including joint school district, general city government, county, vocational school district, and the state. Mill rate was set at $53 per $1,000 of assessed valuation which is only $1 higher than the previous year, despite increases in each of the governmental units.

• The rubber and plastics industry, which set new records in 1969, will start a new decade in a strong position to

Do the Good You Can Human beings know how to help each other.

We rise to the occasion after natural disasters,for instance, and demonstrate that we are at our best when our fellow humans need us most. But why can’t we do this all the time? What keeps us from reaching out and helping others in the mundane give and take of our everyday lives?

Or why do we sometimes fail to rise to the occasion in certain crises, such as helping refugees from war-torn regions. The fact that we sometimes help and other times look away or just plain refuse to help is perhaps an indictment of our moral sentiments,the feelings of empathy and sympathy which move us to help. Sometimes our heartstrings are pulled and we rise to the occasion and other times we fail to do so.

Social Psychology offers some clues to this puzzle. It turns out that what is referred to as bystander apathy (not helping when you see someone in need) can be overcome by 1) noticing that someone needs help; 2) interpreting the situation as one where you could be helpful; 3) taking responsibility for helping; 4) developing a plan (or deciding what should be done); and 5) implementing the plan. It’s not terribly complicated.

Most of us could be doing more to help our sisters and brothers in 2020 need.

The Vikings came away with 51-48 overtime victory on the road against the Panthers on Saturday, Jan. 4. Hobson finished with a game-high 23 points, while McGee scored 14 of his 18 points in the first half.

The two teams were knotted at 41 at the end of regulation, but Stoughton scored the first six points of overtime. Hobson had a transition layup and putback, and Barrett Nelson sank a pair of free throws to begin the extra period. Oregon did not score in the first three minutes of overtime.

Luke Fernholz added five points and Reece Sproul went 3-for-4 from the freethrow line for Stoughton (8-2, 4-1 Badger South), which came into the game ranked fifth in Division 2 in the WisSports.net Coaches Poll. The Vikings remained second in the conference behind Monroe.

“Luke is a really hard worker who’s going to get offensive rebounds and loose balls,” Stoughton coach Nolan Weber said.

“Konner Knauf played great defense in the final possessions, Nathan Hutcherson is one of our best defenders, and Barrett made a pair of big free throws.”

Stoughton trailed 29-24 at halftime, but McGee scored the Vikings’ first five points of the second half to cut it to 32-29.

Hobson stepped up after McGee picked up three quick fouls in the first four minutes of the second half. The senior drilled a 3-pointer from the right wing to tie it at 32, then canned a 3 from the opposite wing with 11 minutes left in regulation to give the Vikings their first lead of the game.

McGee picked up fourth foul at the 8:07 mark, but Hobson converted a three-point play to make it 40-36 Vikings with 5:48 left.

“I knew the situation, but I wasn’t going to play outside of myself,” Hobson said. “We have a next-man-up mentality.

We ran the same stuff with a new guy in.”

Adam Yates made a layup to give Oregon a 41-40 lead with 58 seconds left, but McGee split a pair of free throws 16 seconds later to force overtime.

The Panthers (3-5, 1-4) played without junior point guard Erik Victorson and have now lost five of their last six games, but started fast against the Vikings.

Oregon scored on its four of its first five possessions, then had used a 9-0 run to go up 17-5 with 10:27 left in the first half.

“They didn’t come out with their normal lineup, and I think we let that get to our heads,” Hobson said. “We thought it would be an easy win, and we learned the hard way that wasn’t the case. We needed more energy and to lock down on defense.”

McGee scored Stoughton’s first five points, Hobson scored the next five points, and McGee scored nine of the next 11 points. The Vikings closed the first half on a 9-2 run.

“I came out ready to go,” McGee said.

“Adam found me in a lot of places where I could score.”

Ryne Panzer paced Oregon with 13 points. Brandon Kerns scored all 10 of his points in the first half, and Ryan McCorkle added nine points for the Panthers.

The Stoughton girls basketball team’s decision to switch to a more uptempo offense by pushing the ball on the break is starting to pay off.

The Vikings put on a passing clinic and hit a season-high seven 3-pointers in a 63-51 home win over Appleton West on Saturday, Jan. 4. Stoughton was coming off a 59-48 home loss to Milton a day previous.

“We knew it would be a test and I like how we responded,” Stoughton coach Brad Pickett said. “After a tough conference loss, to turn around less than 24 hours later and bring the effort they did says a lot about this group as a whole.”

Stoughton 63, Appleton West 51

Senior guard Megan Marggi tied for the team high with 13 points and buried three 3-pointers to help the Vikings to a nonconference win over the Terrors.

Senior point guard Myranda Kotlowski scored all 13 of her

points in the second half, and made 5 of 6 free throws in the final 2 minutes to preserve the victory.

Marggi hit a 3 to extend Stoughton’s lead to 40-18 with 16:04 left in the second half.

The Terrors got as close as 10 points, but the Vikings broke the visitors’ press and made 9 of 12 free throws in the final 2:22.

Stoughton made more free throws (22) than the Terrors attempted (14). The Vikings shot 68.7% from the charity stripe (22-for-32).

“Down the stretch, you want your guards with the ball late to step up and knock free throws down,” Pickett said. “It’s good to see that confidence stepping to the line at the end of the game to close it out.”

The Vikings outrebounded the Terrors 39-24 and limited 6-foot-6 senior center Taylor Lauterbach to five points. Lauterbach battled foul trouble in the second half and finished with 11 rebounds.

“We talked about taking the big kid away and we did a nice job,” Pickett said. “Defensively,

I think we were able to set the tone.”

Stoughton (3-7, 1-4 Badger South Conference) opened the game with an 11-0 run. Marggi scored five points during the spurt.

Senior Micah Zaemisch added nine points and sophomore Ava Loftus chipped in eight points and six rebounds for the Vikings.

“We had such good balance and shared the ball really well,” Pickett said. “We were able to take advantage of some mismatches, and when we were able to get into the lane, it gave our shooters some extra looks.”

Milton 59, Stoughton 48

D e l a n ey S e i d e l s c o r e d a team-high 12 points and had six rebounds for the Vikings in a Badger South loss to the Red Hawks.

Zaemisch added 11 points and five rebounds. Loftus also had 11 points and dished out three assists.

Stoughton had 18 turnovers in the game, and Milton built a 24-14 lead at the half.

Stoughton players power Icebergs in wins ADAM FEINER Sports editor

The Icebergs girls hockey co-op is riding its first winning streak of the season after a pair of Badger Conference victories.

The Icebergs shut out Beaver Dam 3-0 on Monday, Jan. 6, at McFarland Community Ice Arena, and scored five unanswered goals in a 7-3 road win over the Badger Lightning on Saturday, Jan. 4.

Icebergs 3, Beaver Dam 0

The Icebergs (3-10-1, 2-4 Badger) peppered Beaver Dam’s Abby Okon with shots from all angles, but the junior goaltender stood tall for most of the game.

Okon finished with 84 saves, but three shots went past her in the final two periods. The Icebergs outshot the Golden Beavers 87-11.

Oregon junior Izzy Newton hit the post two minutes into the second, but had a goal and an assist in the period.

Stoughton junior Rachel Louis hit the left post and the puck clanged off the iron to Newton, who dished it to Stoughton freshman Carley O’Neil for a goal with 8:40 left in the second.

Newton scored five minutes later off a pretty backhand pass by Aeryn Olson.

Stoughton’s Abby Seybold and Aven Gruner combined on the shutout in net.

Seybold made nine saves in the third period, and Gruner made two stops in the first.

Beaver Dam (0-7, 0-3) killed off a penalty in the

second period, but went 0-for-4 on the power play in the third.

Several Stoughton players played key roles in the victory.

Junior Sydney Schipper collected her third assist of the game on Newton’s first goal. Senior Taylor Nisius assisted on Newton’s second goal, and Hefel assisted on the third goal.

Freshman Alex Short capped the scoring with 2:15 left in the third off an assist from sophomore Samantha Nelson.

Hefel scored on the power play off an assist from Schipper to tie it at 3 with 54 seconds left in the second period. The Icebergs went 1-for-7 on the power play, but killed all four penalties.

Louis opened the scoring 1:59 into the game.

Olson scored at the 6:19 mark of the first period off an assist from Schipper to give the Icebergs a 2-0 lead.

The Lightning’s Allison Knull scored a minute later, and Bella Bowden scored twice to give the home team its only lead of the game. Kaitlyn Edler m a d e 4 2 s ave s f o r t h e Lightning.

The Icebergs finished with a 49-28 advantage in shots. Gruner made 25 saves.

Three Stoughton wrestlers wrestled for championships at the 22nd annual Cheesehead Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 4, in Kaukauna.

Gavin Model went 6-1 in the 145-pound division, while Luke Mechler (152) and Brooks Empey (220) finished the tournament 5-1 and lost for the first time this season in the championship round.

Model (27-3) beat opponents from five different states on his way to a runner-up finish. He won by 16-0 technical fall over Platte County (MO)’s Jared Parsons, won a 15-1 major decision over Joliet Catholic (IL)’s Jack Finnegan, beat Kasson-Mantorville (MN)’s Tanner Paulson 13-6 and upset the ninthranked wrestler in the country, St. Paris Graham (OH)’s Alek Martin, 6-3 on Friday, Jan. 3.

Model pinned Mason City (IA)’s Colby Schriever in 1:50 and beat Mt. Carmel (IL)’s Connor Gaynor 5-4 in the semifinals, but lost a rematch against Martin 8-3 in the championship match.

Mechler (29-1) pinned Lyons Township (IL)’s Will Bettiga in 2:30 and Edwardsville (IL)’s Will Zupanci in 3:27, and beat Wisconsin Rapids’ Wyler Lubeck 5-1 on the first day of competition. He started Saturday with an 11-4 win over Arrowhead’s Noah Mulvaney

for his 100th career win, and beat DeKalb (IL)’s Damien Lopez 5-1 in the semifinals.

Joliet Catholic’s Dean Hamiti Jr., a Wisconsin commit ranked 13th in the country, won a 13-3 major decision over Mechler in the championship bout.

Empey (29-1) pinned Kasson-Mantorville’s Owen Bradford in 21 seconds, Warren Township (IL)’s Ali Abdel-Jaber in 25 seconds and St. Paris Graham’s Nolan Neves in 4:13 on Friday. He won an 11-3 major decision over Mukwonago’s Caleb Willmann and beat Fennimore’s Aaron Ragels 2-0 to reach the finals, but lost a 10-1 major decision to Simley (MN)’s Bennett Tabor, ranked 14th in the country, in the championship.

Stoughton 182-pounder Brandt Spilde placed sixth with a 4-4 record. He pinned Platte County’s Gabe Harmon in 1:39 and Waterford’s Zach Kaminski in 4:45, then pinned Lyons Township’s Griffin King in 3:39 after losing by pin to Kasson-Mantorville’s Patrick Kennedy.

Spilde received a medical forfeit victory Saturday, but lost to Burlington’s Qwade Gehring twice and also fell 6-4 to Edwardsville’s Caleb Harrold.

Chance Suddeth (106) finished seventh with a 4-3 record.

He pinned St. Charles East (IL)’s Alex Hadzima in 1:50 and won 6-4 in overtime against Hartford’s

Tyler Klein before being pinned in the second period by DeKalb’s Ben Aranda. Suddeth won an 11-2 major decision over Smithville (MO)’s Kolby McClain, lost his first two matches Saturday, and received a medical forfeit victory in the seventh-place match.

Nicolar Rivera (126) had to forfeit his final four matches after suffering an injury and wound up eighth. He defeated Edwardsville’s Dylan Gvillo 18-11 and St. Paris Graham’s Nick Hart 8-4 before the injury.

Heavyweight Griffin Empey finished 10th with a 3-3 record. He lost his first two matches by pin, but bounced back to beat Joliet Catholic’s Josh Jones 4-0 and Freedom’s Hayden VanCamp 1-0 and pin Aurora Christian (IL)’s Mike Esquivel in 5:10. St. Charles East’s Brock Donati pinned Empey in the second period of the ninth-place match.

Trenton Dow (132) placed 18th with a 2-2 record. He bounced back from a 13-12 loss to Mason City’s Connor Wiemann with a 6-0 win over Joliet Catholic’s Owen O’Connor and a 5-3 win over Freedom’s Carsten McHugh. Dow lost to Edwardsville’s Austin Bauer 2-0 in the 17th-place match.

Ethan Peterson (120) lost his three matches.

The Vikings finished ninth out of 33 teams with 331.5 points, the fourth-best score among Wisconsin schools. Simley won the team title with 614.5 points.

Senior forward Park er Milbauer scored two goals in the second period, but the Vikings fell to the Comets.

Waupaca’s Eli Bartel had a hat trick in the first period to help the Comets take a 3-0 lead.

The Vikings battled back,

with Milbauer scoring a power-play goal off an assist from junior forward Zayne Zeichert 3:31 into the second period. After another goal by the Comets, Milbauer scored off a pass from senior defenseman Jack Sanford at the 8:10 mark. The Vikings got another goal 33 seconds later from junior forward Dustin Woelker off an assist from senior forward Brody Hlavacek. Senior forward James Hanson tied the game at 4 with 2:57 left in the second off a pass from Sanford.

Waupaca’s Jack Erspamer scored his second goal of the game at the end of the second to give the Comets a 5-4 lead.

Waupaca finished with a 25-21 advantage in shots.

Stoughton goaltender Max Nihles made 19 saves. The Vikings were 1-for-5 on the power play.

Lucca Weinkauf posted a hat trick for the Panthers, who scored four goals in the first period and three in the second.

Stevens Point outshot Stoughton 37-13, and Nihles made 28 saves.

S. Keith Slinde, age 81, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, Dec. 25, 2019, at his home. He was born in Madison on July 19, 1938, the son of Stanley and Gunhild Slinde.

Keith married Susan Haried on his birthday in 1959. He graduated from Stoughton High School in 1956, where he was active in basketball, baseball and football.

Keith was a longtime local business owner. He was a member of Christ Lutheran Church and Sons of Norway.

Keith is survived by his wife of 60 years, Susan; children, Stuart (Laurie), S t eve n ( M o n i c a ) , a n d Stephanie (Scott) Stokes; grandchildren, Jon and Jenna Stokes, Michael and Reagan Slinde; brother, Rodney (Katie); l o n g t i m e f r i e n d , H a rvey (Nancy) Anderson; and many relatives and friends.

H e wa s p r e c e d e d i n death by his parents; and sister, Suzanne (Dallas) Ramsden.

Ben Joseph Erickson, age 22, of Stoughton, passed away on Friday, Dec. 27, 2019, surrounded by his loving family at UW Hospital and Clinics.

He was born on July 16, 1997, in Madison, the son of Jay and Cheryl (Moe) Erickson. Ben graduated from Stoughton High School in 2015.

He was a proud member of UA Local 601 and for the past four years, a dedicated steamfitter apprentice at General Heating and Air Conditioning.

Ben’s work was his passion. He knew that it took hard work to get what you wanted in life.

Ben was a simple man; one of kind. He loved to make people laugh, was an “old soul” and always had something clever to say.

He was a denim-on-denim kind of guy. He loved all things outdoors, grilling, cooking and spending time at “the shop”.

Above all else, Ben had a heart of gold. He was a kind, humble and strong person. Ben was the type of man who would do anything for anyone; he’d give the shirt off his back.

Ben loved his family and adored his niece, Mara. He valued each moment spent playing with her. Ben and his Grandpa Joe had a special bond and will always be known as his grandpa’s “little buddy.” He lived his life fully and was always ready to have a good time and even known to sing a little karaoke.

Ben was proud of his many accomplishments, especially his welding, earning a UA60 Certification in his first year of his apprenticeship. Ben touched so many lives and will be deeply missed by his family and countless

Patricia J. Steaffens, age 88, passed away on Sunday, Dec. 29, 2019. She was born in Chicago on July 22, 1931, the daughter of Howard and Virginia Jenkins.

Pat graduated cum laude from Ripon College with a Bachelor’s Degree. On June 14, 1952 she married William C. Steaffens at Ravenswood United Methodist Church in Chicago.

Pat worked as an administrative assistant at Nelson Industries for many years.

She was a longtime dedicated member of Stoughton United Methodist Church where she served as the first woman chair of trustees, chair of the worship committee and SPRC, lay leader, and member of the Annual Conference.

Pat was a longtime member of the Madison Area Chapter of the Embroiderers Guild of America, and Oregon Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star where she served as worthy matron, grand martha, and grand representative Idaho in Wisconsin from 19951996. Pat was a founding member of the Southeast American Cancer Society in Dane County and was Volunteer of the Year in 1987.

She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. Pat is survived by her daughter, Debra Steaffens; son Jeffrey Steaffens; daughter, Susan Steaffens; daughter-in-law, Trinice Steaffens; granddaughter, Sarah Nuccio; grandson, Matthew Steaffens; great

Kathy graduated from John Edwards High School in Port Edwards, Wisconsin. She was a member of the Board of Directors of Legal Action of Wisconsin for 30 years (appointed by Family Ties) and a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

Kathy loved gardening, nature, pottery and art. She had a very creative mindset and talent.

She loved working with clay and created clay tile art as a small business.

Kathy enjoyed and loved putting together small craft gifts for friends and family. She also had a big love for photography.

Kathy was a great cook and enjoyed discussing food. She was especially passionate about genealogy. Kathy was also proud of her Irish heritage and sought to learn as much as she could.

Most of all, she loved her friends, family and her grandkids were her joy.

Beverly Mildred Wilson, age 88, of Stoughton, passed away on Saturday, Dec. 28, 2019, at Stoughton Hospital. She was born on Sept. 24, 1931, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, the daughter of Willard and Viola (Wirkula) Beacom. Beverly graduated from Minneapolis Central High School. She was united in marriage to Richard Wilson on April 28, 1951.

Beverly worked as a Data System Analyst for Dane County. She was a member of St. Ann Catholic Parish and coordinated the church’s library, was a member of the counting team and did computer work for the church office.

Catherine “Cay” Hermanson Catherine “Cay” Hermanson, age 88, of Stoughton passed away on Thursday Jan. 2, 2020, at Stoughton Hospital. She was born on April 13, 1931, in Brown County. She married James “Jim” Hermanson on Aug. 26, 1956 in Fox Point, Milwaukee.

Cay was a very hard-working home maker, a neighborhood mom and a friend to everyone! She loved to bowl, always striving to bowl a 300 game.

Although she didn’t achieve that here on earth (but she sure had fun trying) we know that she has bowled some 300 games at her new home….. Heaven.

Yahara Strummers back for another season Practice begins Jan. 9 at senior center The sounds of the Yahara Strummers string band will soon be heard through the halls of the Stoughton Area Senior Center again.

The local informal string band made up anywhere from 8-15 members, starts their weekly practices 1-2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 9.

Each week, the group practices on the second floor of the senior center.

Comforts: Julebukking carolers visit community members to brighten holiday season Continued from page 1 to include the preservation of Norwegian heritage and culture.

Susan Slinde, whose home was the first stop for the julebukking group, had attended her husband’s funeral earlier that day.

A n o t h e r m e m b e r, D o r i s Helmke, lost her husband at the end of November.

“Don always was a gracious host to the julebukking group and it was pretty touching for all of us that Doris wanted us to come,” Arneson said.

Not only do the Sons of Norway provide treats to those they visit, but their hosts provide some in return. Wine, champagne, cookies, krumkake and other refreshments are served to the carolers.

The Stoughton chapter of the Sons of Norway is District Five and they refer to themselves as the “friendly fifth.” Julebukking is one way they demonstrate that mantle.

“We aren’t the best singers but we have a lot of fun. It’s great community outreach and another important Norwegian tradition to carry on here in the Stoughton area,” Arneson said.
