Popularity grows in community SUBMITTED BY DENA GRUTZ, PLATTEVILLE AREA PICKLEBALL ASSOCIATION “In 2010, Kathleen and I winter vacationed in Mesa, AZ at Venture Out where we began playing pickleball.

When we returned we organized a group of 10 people to begin playing pickleball at the University outdoor basketball courts. We all contributed to purchasing two portable nets which we still use at the Armory.

Since those early days we have had about 58 other people join us in playing pickleball at both the Armory and outdoors either at the Westview tennis courts or the University basketball courts. The sport of pickleball is easy to learn but challenging to master. There are many pickleball players in the Platteville area that would enjoy providing some introductory lessons if anyone is interested. The cost of the sport is very minimal as you only need to purchase a racket. If you are interested to learn more about the game PAPA has several rackets that can be used as you begin playing.”

Wally & Kathleen Iselin “Pickleball was always a popular unit in my Middle School Phy. Ed. classes. After retirement from the Platteville School District, I joined a small group playing pickleball at the Platteville Armory. I looked forward to the play as much as the camaraderie with friends.

This small group quickly doubled then tripled in size. With the development of the new pickleball complex, I’ll be able to

continue to play with our growing group as well as play with my grandchildren and great nieces and nephews.”

Eileen McCartney “We were introduced to the sport of pickleball 7 years ago. When making the decision to move closer to family in Platteville, we were happy to find a welcoming group of like-minded pickleball players already established.

Pre-pandemic, we were playing 3 times per week. We have found that pickleball provides fun physical exercise for multiple skill and age levels, along with a social connection. It is a lifetime sport, providing lifetime friendships. We are looking forward to introducing others to pickleball in Platteville.”

Just play a few times with someone who knows the few simple rules and how to score and then you can play with anyone, any time. You’ll see improvement in your game with practice and while learning from others. Personally what draws me to this sport over other sports is that I like the fact that you can play when you’re available rather than scheduled like a team sport. It’s easy to learn, the equipment costs very little, and it’s a great opportunity to meet new people.”

“I started playing pickleball about 4 years ago when asked

by Dawson Trine if I would be interested. I remembered trying it on vacation years ago and it was fun. There are few competitive activities for adults in the area so I tried it. It is simple to learn and a beginner can start to play immediately. It takes lots of practice, assistance from established players and dedication to achieve some level of competence, but the pickleball group here in Platteville accepts and encourages players of all levels without judgement. Players of all ages, skill levels, and physical abilities can play, compete and enjoy the company of others in a fun environment so the sport is growing in popularity. As it is growing in Platteville, we need more courts as the three indoor courts are often overcrowded and the outdoor courts are makeshift and not specific to the game. More courts encourages more interest and would also allow for tournaments to draw players from surrounding areas to our community.”

Generations of Pickleball Play

ecades ago, two couples found they had many things in common. They were all teachers. They were active members of the same church, they championed some of the same causes, they both had families, they lived in the same community, and they loved sports. Dawson Trine and Bill Sanders and Jean Sanders taught in the UW-Platteville Mathematics Department, while Marie Trine taught third grade at Westview Elementary School, Platteville WI. In their retirement years, the two couples continued to support the community of Platteville while finding time to stay young with activities like tennis, golf, pickleball, walking, water aerobics, and exercise classes.

Dawson and Bill competed for years on the tennis court, and then added pickleball to their activities. Dawson brought pickleball to Platteville after playing it Bill & Jean Sanders in Florida in the late 90’s.

Then, Bill Sanders encouraged the City of Platteville to reconstruct their nearly abandoned tennis courts in 2010.

These days, these four friends are still active, with family and friends, spending their time in warmer climates during the winter and in Platteville the rest of the year. While the Trines find The Villages in central Florida ideal for their outdoor activities, the Sanders find that Venture Out in Arizona suits their active lifestyle.

Young at Heart, wise in spirit, and with health that belies their age describes these four friends. Now they have found a new endeavor, while giving back to their community. The two families are working together to help make possible an eight court pickleball complex in Platteville, WI. As the fastest growing sport in the country, pickleball is yet another avenue for these friends to stay young. The sport involves elements of tennis, racketball, and table tennis, while played on a court the size of a badminton court.

The Sanders and Trine families look forward to enjoying the fruits of their latest venture in September 2021. 

PAPA (Platteville Area Pickleball Association) extends appreciation to Woodward Communications Foundation for their $8,000 donation to the Platteville pickleball complex. Bob Woodward, Vice-President of Woodward Community Media and Publisher of TH Media, stated, “Our employeeowned company is proud to be a part of the coalition that’s making this project a reality. It’s so great to see the alliances between the City, the school system and the Platteville area community.

It’ll benefit people of all ages for years to come.

We’re happy to be a part of it.”

Platteville Park and Recreation Director, Luke Peters, presented the project contract to the Common Council on March 23rd for their approval.

The lowest bidder was Owen Excavation and Trenching from Cuba City, Wisconsin. The total amount raised is $299,090 towards the $350,000 project amount. PAPA’s vision of a 8 court state of the art, fully lit complex with a patio is nearing their goal.

A: We average about 3-4 trips a year!

Last year we had 5 planned but weren’t able to go due to Covid.

A: Probably about 8-10 trips.

Q: What was your favorite trip?

A: Alaksa! I won $400 playing bingo!!

I really have loved them all, but here are some of my favorites. New England Fall Foliage, Springtime in the Southeast. Yellowstone and Pikes Peak.

Q: Funny memory?

A: On the Springtime in the Southeast tour, we decided to walk by the water to go to a Mexican restaurant and it seemed like we just kept walking and walking to get there. We ordered our meal and then decided it was too far to walk back so we asked for a shuttle but they didn’t have one. We called Pat for a ride. She ended up coming to pick us up in a golf cart so we all piled in!

Q: What was your favorite trip?

A: Mt. Rushmore, Glacier National Park. Texas, Niagara Falls.

Q: Share a memory?

A: I really enjoyed the trip out West to Glacier National Park. Dan was usually driving the bus but on this trip he was able to sit in the back of the bus with Pat and enjoy the trip.

It was great to see him riding in the Jammer cars. I remember the smile on his face!

A: A lot! We have been going since they began, probably about 10 years ago.

A: We were at Jekyll Island and there was about 13 of us walking to the Mexican restaurant. We had to have Pat come and pick us up. We all had to climb on the golf cart to get back!

Commitment beyond imagination

n every home on every block on every street and lot and farm in southwest Wisconsin, people have stories to tell of this pandemic year. I have one. You have one. And every last one of the 91,832 souls in Grant, Iowa, and Lafayette Counties has their own story to tell.

Grief. Loss. Struggle. Isolation and loneliness. Despair. Hardship.

Desperation. Resilience. And hope for better days. All over our beloved communities and across our beautiful rolling hills and valleys, our stories – each one of them separate and unique – are connected as never before by an invisible virus that threatened our lives and livelihoods.

At Southwest Health, our story has always been about community, and never has that been more evident than this year. As the region’s healthcare system, community matters here. That’s because your wellbeing is our purpose.

So when the health of every person in southwest Wisconsin is at stake, we go all out. We show up for our communities like no one else.

When the pandemic came knocking, Southwest Health responded.

Immediately, our CEO Dan Rohrbach initiated our emergency response systems and created a full-scale command team to lead, monitor, communicate, and plan. We met every day. We left nothing out. We held nothing back. This was no drill. With worst case scenarios looming ahead, we planned not only to help prevent but also to overcome human disasters we never before imagined but suddenly knew were possible.

Our day-to-day responsibilities pivoted.

Protocol changed throughout our facilities. We geared up, and we showed up, all despite the ultimate in personal risks for many on the front lines.

Every moment of every day our focus was squarely on the health and safety of our community. That included the health and safety for every person on our team.

A few months earlier our Marketing and Communications Team had rolled out a new employee mantra: WE begins with ME. Those four words sum up our quality philosophy. We are each responsible for the safety of all. And we are all to take action necessary for zero harm. And together, we create a highlyreliable organization. In other words, it takes all of us. Although those words were carefully crafted to reflect our staff’s shared dedication to high quality and highly reliable healthcare systems, it felt almost as if we’d anticipated the uncharted waters of the pandemic. Turns out, WE begins with ME is exactly what was required.

Together, we persisted. In the face of challenges none of us had ever before faced, our team climbed that mountain.

Looking back, the intensity of my own anxiety, my fears, and my angst over what could happen are all undeniable.

Yet I was also surrounded by other leaders with resolute determination and a team of co-workers I knew could accomplish anything. We had each other’s backs, and we had the backs of everyone in southwest Wisconsin.

As a result, our incredible healthcare organization adapted quickly. Every day we did things we had never done before.

And we did them well.

Here are some of the key steps we took: 

We planned and prepared for worst case scenarios. The very real possibility existed that any healthcare system in the country could be overwhelmed, and it seemed our team was prepared even for that.



We created the “Safe In Our Care” initiative to ensure our facility was always clean and safe for patients and employees alike. As simple as it sounds, this affected everything from comprehensive changes to disinfecting protocol and visitor policies to temperature checks to even overhauling our appointment scheduling and check-in procedures to ensure patients were always distanced.



Our materials management team began painstakingly tracking our daily use of vital supplies and tracking down the life-saving stocks of personal protective equipment that were for many months in such scarce supply.



We suspended non-essential care to reduce the chance of further infections and focus on the urgent needs.



We created an enclosed and completely separate COVID unit for patients with more severe cases who required admission to the hospital.

This included establishing a third negative air flow patient room to further contain the virus.



We also created a temporary clinic completely separate from our hospital facility to care for patients with upper respiratory infections who could be potentially infected with COVID.



We added a driveway and rear exit to our EMS Station garage area to establish a sheltered drive through testing site. This made testing faster and easier for our community.



And when vaccines finally became available, we designed the region’s most effective systems, communicated with our patients, and practically overnight launched a clinic where we vaccinated thousands of high-risk people in a very short time.

The investments this work required was massive. With nearly 500 employees, the

investment of hours worked is by itself an ocean of energy and resources. The off-site respiratory clinic alone required more than 2,000 hours to operate. There were 2,000 curbside pickups from our pharmacy. Or, even more striking, the 10,635 COVID tests performed which necessitates the tests, the time, and the lab work. The creation of the drivethru facility alone came with a cost of $30,000. There were also the purchases of new equipment and vast quantities of supplies and personal protective equipment. Now, to help speed the end to it all, our team to date placed over 8,000 vaccines in arms requiring a small army of staff to raise their hands to cover the additional duties.

The commitment to communities is staggering. While one could tally the hours, count the dollars, or inventory the tests and supplies, I’ve seen for myself what can’t be calculated. I’ve witnessed and heard of plenty of extraordinary examples of courage and commitment in my years at Southwest Health, but this year I saw our team operate on an entirely new level. An intensity and duration of commitment beyond imagination.

Our stories from this year deserve to be heard. All of them. I want to know the loss and isolation and struggles our communities faced are understood by future generations. And because I can, I am personally compelled to tell my perspective of Southwest Health’s story.

I saw first-hand how this team responded to the enormous responsibilities. I saw how this team proved its commitment to our communities is real. And that, I know in my heart, is a story that needs telling.

This team shows up for us every day.

Sometimes, like this past year, we show up in extraordinary ways. The hardships of the pandemic aside, I know what a privilege it is for me to work here.

The fact I have that privilege means I understand the dedication this team feels to the people of southwest Wisconsin.

Telling this story is my way of helping others also understand that dedication.

There is no one else to step in and do what we do for our communities. One thing this past year makes crystal clear is our team at Southwest Health is the one we can count on to be here for us today, tomorrow, and always. 

Leisure activities may be widely viewed as fun ways to fill up free time, but the benefits of leisure activities extend beyond beating boredom. xercise is a vital component of a healthy lifestyle. By making exercise part of their day-to-day routines, people of all ages, including men and women over the age of 65, can greatly improve their overall health.

The American Academy of Family Physicians notes that seniors should aspire to be as active as possible.

Exercise is a great way to incorporate physical activity into your daily routine and has been linked to reduced risk for diseases such as heart disease, diabetes and osteoporosis.

Though adults with chronic illnesses may be hesitant to exercise, the AAFP notes that it’s possible for men and women who have been diagnosed with such conditions to exercise safely. In fact, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that regular physical activity is one of the most important things seniors can do for their health and can potentially prevent many health problems associated with aging.

A book demands a sequel when that sequel focuses on a different set of characters.

That’s what happens in “Eight-Five” and “EightFive ... Still Alive,” by Bruce, Wisconsin, writer Arian Knops. In this duology, Knops traces the crimes of serial killer Avarde Kolt, alias Michael Barrett, who is relentlessly pursued by Minneapolis homicide investigator Dan Costello.

“Eight-Five” focuses on Costello as he begins to unravel the mystery of a serial killer who attaches cattle tags with the numbers eight-five to the ears of his victims. The killer also sends taunting clues to Costello, who makes it his life’s mission to find the killer.

Costello enlists the help of police throughout the country, including Bill Thorp, a sheriff’s deputy in Rusk County, Wisconsin. Barrett, however, who serves as a county supervisor, outmaneuvers his pursuers, leaving them with much suspicion but no proof.

What compels Barrett in his homicidal spree becomes clearer at the end of the first novel and the beginning of the second. Abused by a cold and heartless father, taunted in high school and early in his Navy career, Barrett undergoes a transformation from enlisted man to Navy pilot, surviving harrowing incidents in Vietnam to pursue his victims through a lifetime of coldblooded murders.

However, we start to see a hidden humanity within Barrett, who has claimed the lives of over 100 victims, when he finds his beloved cat Sparky dead in a laundry basket.

“His wonderful pal Sparky was dead. Michael felt tears creep into his eyes. He had never really cried when a human died, but the loss of the cat was touching the soul he doubted he had.”

Barrett starts to change when he decides not to kill Greg Gregory, a target he finds in Wann, Okla. Gregory welcomes Barrett into his home with a warmth Barrett had never felt in his own home when growing up. When Barrett reunites with Rhonda Warshski, a girl he had known in his youth, he is again transformed as he regains the lost humanity of his youth.

And then ...

Knops convincingly tells his story from the point of view of law enforcement. Even more convincing is how he explores the mind of serial killer Barrett. Just as we think we see where his story is going, Knops veers into unknown directions that are vivid and convincing.

There are several options available to accomplish this objective, and each has its own advantages and disadvantages. Those include 529 college savings plans, direct beneficiaries and trusts, either within your will or within a living trust.

Trust within a will

Regardless of which option you choose, it is important to make sure that all the pieces to your estate planning puzzle, including ownership and beneficiary designations for each of your assets, fit together to ensure a smooth transition upon your death.

529 plans A 529 college savings plan can be beneficial from an income tax standpoint. You can remain the owner of the plan during your lifetime while designating a specific grandchild as the beneficiary of each account.

Keep in mind, however, that the funds are only available (without penalty) for approved educational expenses and might not include tuition for non-traditional educational institutions, such as cosmetology colleges. If you choose this option, be sure to designate a successor owner on the account upon your death.

Direct beneficiary If you name a grandchild as the direct beneficiary of a life insurance policy or deposit account, this option will provide him or her with an outright distribution of cash upon your death (assuming your grandchild is over 18). This option will not allow you to determine how your grandchild can use the cash.

If your grandchild is a minor, this option is not

Within your will, you can create testamentary trusts for your grandchildren in which you designate the trustee of each trust, at what age your grandchild can receive an outright distribution and what the assets can and cannot be used for in the meantime.

If you are relying on a will to transfer your assets upon your death, your estate likely will be subject to a probate proceeding in court.

Only those assets that are titled solely in your name, with no designated beneficiaries, will be part of your probate estate. Assets with coowners or designating direct beneficiaries will be distributed outside of your will and not to any trust established within your will.

Trusts within a living trust Within a fully-funded Living Trust, you can create trusts for your grandchildren and ensure these trusts are funded upon your death immediately, privately, and without the need for a costly and lengthy probate proceeding.

Through a comprehensive estate plan, you can even create incentives for your grandchildren.

For example, you can direct that the assets in your grandchilds trust are only available for his or her post-high school education until the age of 30 or until he or she obtains a bachelors degree, whichever event occurs first.  Attorney Dera L.
