Brian Leix • Leix Farms Inc. • Montfort, WI • Installed Spring ‘16 “A big reason why we installed the CT Slider right away when we installed the automatic calf feeders is the sliding door. We really like how it prevents calves from sucking after they are finished drinking. We also like how the nipple is sanitized after each calf, keeping the main feeding area clean. Additionally, it has been very low maintenance, and I would definitely install the CT Slider again if I had to do it over.”

Fennimore Celebrates their 100th Anniversary as a City...A Century of Progress

This local community paper is free to our readers. We’ve been that way from the beginning. We won’t change that even in the toughest of times. But we do improve this paper every issue. We won’t stand still as the market changes. Giving readers and advertisers the best value is our goal. Over the years we have become the marketplace for our community. Working For You

The City of Fennimore recently turned 100 years as a City. Local volunteers Margaret Sprague and Ingeborg Froiland have spent many hours tracing the history of the City of Fennimore. Photos, stories and memorabilia are now on display in the front hallway of the Fennimore Memorial building from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday through Friday, Oct 11. The public is encouraged to stop by and view the multitude of information which is sure to bring back fond memories to those who have grown up in the Fennimore area. The displays will be on display until Friday, Oct. 11 at which time Fennimore Utilities are planning a free lunch for utility customers as part of Public Power week. Public Power Week is October 7-11. Join Fennimore Utilities at the Fennimore Memorial Building for a week of refreshments and chances to win door prizes as Fennimore Utilities celebrate Public Power Week. Win a chance to get credit against your utility bill among other door prizes. A complimentary luncheon will be served on Friday, Oct. 11 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Memorial building gym. Benefits of Living in a Public Power community include: low rates, high reliability customer responsiveness, community focus, economic development and local control. Fennimore has been a public power community since 1904; a partner with Focus on Energy since 2008, bringing energy efficiency opportunities to customers. The City of Fennimore’s electric utility, worked through their electric buying group UMMEG, and has entered into a 25 year power purchase agreement with Butter Solar to buy all electricity produced at the local solar farm. Promotions Coordinator, Linda Parrish, shared “the solar farm will supply approximately 18 percent of Fennimore’s annual electric needs. The City currently purchases 22 percent of their electric needs from wind energy, bringing us up to 40 percent of Fennimore Utilities annual electric needs being produces by renewable energy. This far surpasses the city’s goal of 20 percent renewable by 2020.” Fennimore’s city-owned electric, water and sewer utilities offer highly competitive rates and dependable service can save businesses substantial operating dollars. The low cost of doing business is key to the profitability of Fennimore area businesses.

Cuba City Kicks off Its Comprehensive Plan Update Process Cuba City is kicking off the public engagement portion of its Comprehensive Plan Update Process on October 9th. The session will be led by the consulting firm of Redevelopment Resources of Madison, Wisconsin. Communities in Wisconsin are required to update their plans every ten years, and Cuba City sees this as an opportunity to foster “Smart Growth” for the City of Presidents. Mayor Tom Gile stated, “The City has a large number of positive attributes in its schools, shopping and professional services and especially its people. This Plan Update will help us to chart a course for the future.” The program is dubbed “Cuba City, Today and Tomorrow” and will include participation of the City’s high performing school system. “The students are our future and we need to hear their thoughts,” Gile said. Two high school seniors currently participate on the City’s Downtown Task Force and 218 students gave their input to the City in a survey last spring. The Information Session will be held at 6:30 p.m. on October 9th at Cuba City’s City Hall. Additional details are available on the City website at cubacity.org. adno=109964

PLATTEVILLE, Wis., October 26, 2019—Haunted Mine Tours Our region is replete with 19th-century ghost stories, many of them passed down by the rowdy, tough, dangerous men whose job it was to mine lead – immigrants from Ireland, Wales, and Cornwall, from Germany and the American South. What more fitting place to experience the spine-tingling chills of ghost stories than 45 feet underground in a real 1845 lead mine at The Mining & Rollo Jamison Museums? The Museums continue the annual tradition of Haunted Mine Tours this fall on Saturday, October 26th, from 6-9 p.m.One ghost story follows a disappearance of a secretive miner in Platteville. Another follows a gruesome hanging in Mineral Point. Yet another stems from a baseball gone awry in Linden. Aside from the physical exertion and the risk of ruining your body, mining offered many opportunities for a fast death: Falls down mine shafts, crushing cave-ins, and the risk of being blown to bits by explosives. One story retells a mine cave-in in Shullsburg that left 15 fatherless. When the Cornish miners came to America in the 1830s to dig the grey gold, they brought with them their belief in the tommyknocker. These small dwarf-like creatures worked in the mines, tapping away and making strange noises deep in the rocks. They were often heard, but rarely seen. One unlucky miner named Eddie became a target of the Tommyknockers. They drove him crazy, pelting him with stones, stealing his tools, and blowing out his lantern. He couldn't figure out why the Tommyknockers had singled him out until one day he heard a voice calling to him from the dark opening of a nearby shaft. “Eddie, I want my five dollars!” Besides hearing these stories and others by candle-light on a guided lantern tour underground, visitors can learn their fortune and play Victorian Halloween parlor games above ground at The Mining & Rollo Jamison Museums. The clean-cut friendly ghosts are members of the UW-Platteville Sigma Pi fraternity. We dare you to try out Platteville’s most popular underground Halloween event! The ticket price for Haunted Mine Tours are: Adults $10, Seniors $8.50, and Children 5-17 $5. Tickets sell out fast, so book your Haunted Mine Tour now by visiting www.mining.jamison.museum or calling (608) 348-3301. Find the Museums on Facebook and Instagram. If you’d be interested in being part of the event behindthe-scenes, give us a call to join our team of talented volunteers.

Once a Badger, always a Badger. Once a Fillback customer, always a Fillback customer. “It didn’t take me long to realize why the term, ‘Where the Customer is First Since 1948’ is so appropriate at the Fillback Family of Dealerships. Just like my family’s legacy of dedication and a strong work ethic, the team at Fillback takes great pride in the family values that have been instilled throughout the rich history of the dealerships. Mark and his team are great to deal with and have a commitment to keeping you on the road. With over 400 new and preowned vehicles, you’re sure to find just what you’re looking for. Friday, October 18 In the battle against breast cancer, early detection is a woman’s most powerful weapon. In fact, according to the National Cancer Institute, when breast cancer is detected in an early, localized stage, the five-year survival rate is 98 percent. That’s why it is so important for all women to make breast health awareness a regular part of their healthcare routine.

Growing Awareness to Save Lives A

mammogram can detect breast cancer in its earliest, most treatable stages, and many major health organizations recommend annual mammogram screenings for women beginning at age 40 . Experts also recommend clinical breast exams and breast self-exams to check for breast abnormalities on a regular basis. Any woman noticing unusual changes in her breasts should contact her healthcare provider immediately. Women of all ages should speak to their doctor about his or her personalized recommendations for breast cancer screening. As we recognize Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we remember the women who have lost their lives to the disease, and we voice our support for those in the fight of their lives.
