Kae’s Garden “Love Where You Grow”

Kae’s Garden

■ History of the Garden

Katie Vaassen was a very inspirational young lady who epitomized the word “volunteer.” Katie began volunteering at the Platteville Chamber of Commerce at the age of 14, and by the time she graduated from high school in 1999, she had accumulated over 800 hours of volunteer service. She attended UW-Platteville and continued working at the Chamber as an official student employee. She was very creative, very organized, loved interacting with the public and was always up for a challenge.

O wn ed an d main tain ed b y th e Plaeville Regional Chamber, community volunteers and members of the Grant County Master Gardeners, was created in 2004 as a tribute to a very special volunteer.

Katie had a heart condition that prevented her from doing manyf physical activities, but she brought her powerhouse of spunk, spirit and attitude at all times. She passed away at the tender age of 23 on May 13, 2004. As a tribute to her, the Chamber of Commerce dedicated a garden to her on July 25, 2004. The initial clean-up and groundbreaking on the gardens was July 14, 2004. A host of community members and friends, many with little or no prior gardening experience, came to help. Weeks later, hundreds of individuals gathered at the Platteville Chamber of Commerce to not only celebrate what would have been Katie’s 24th birthday, but also to recognize the love Katie shared with those around her. Katie’s Garden, located on the Rountree Branch Trail adjacent to the Platteville Regional Chamber, remains a testament to the life of a woman whose time here on Earth was too short. Katie’s Garden is owned and maintained by the Platteville Regional Chamber, community volunteers and members of the Grant County Master Gardeners. The garden features benches, tables, picnic areas and walking paths with a focal point of a beautiful gazebo where one can sit and enjoy the continuous beauty of the gardens.

■ Reserving the Garden

✦ Please contact the Platteville Regional Chamber to reserve Katie’s Garden for your special event. Call 608-348-8888 or e-mail chamber@ platteville.com to check the availability of the garden for your event. ✦ Katie’s Garden is a great venue for birthday and anniversary parties and has been the site of many weddings. Photographers are encouraged to check the availability of the garden before booking their shoots.
