History

With 60 buildings of historic significance, a stroll down Main Street helps one appreciate Platteville’s strong sense of history. Platteville began as Platte River Diggings in 1822. Once home to the Ho-Chunk Indians, Platteville was settled in the mid-1820s by American and European miners who were attracted by rich lead deposits. After the discovery of lead in the area, the region’s economy began to flourish.

Road Trips

WAYS TO SPEND YOUR DAY!

Start your day by visiting Katie’s Garden and stretch your legs along the Rountree Branch Trail or just reflect in the peaceful calm of the gazebo. Before you leave, stop at the Wisconsin Welcome Center-Platteville to pick up some free brochures and maps. Head to The Mining & Rollo Jamison Museums for a mine tour as well as a gimpse at a truly eclectic collection of local memorabilia. As you leave the museums, head up the road to Historic Main Street and check out the 3D Mural located at the corner of East Main & Oak Streets. The mural features nine prominent people in Platteville’s History that the observer must match with the proper name. (Hint: look from the side and you will find the answers!) Continue up Main Street and visit the unique shops along the way. As you reach the top of Main Street, visit Rountree Gallery to view some local art work then head over to City Park to view the Veterans Memorial and on Saturdays, shop at the Platteville Farmer’s Market. There are many options for lunch on Main Street and around the corner on Historic 2nd Street. After lunch visit the Mitchell Rountree Stone Cottage or take a walk through the UW-Platteville Campus. Before dusk, make sure you are on your way to the World’s Largest M so you can view the beautiful sunset from the top!

Rountree Branch Trail and Mound View State Trail

With more than 10 miles of non-motorized public trails, Platteville hosts a scenic route for walking, running and biking. The trail winds along the Rountree Branch and features a trout stream with several places to fish from the shores. Following the stream, the trail takes you from UW-Platteville to Mound View Park or the shopping district along Progressive Parkway and connects Platteville to Belmont on the new Mound View State Trail, where one can access 4,500 miles of state trails. With plenty of benches and kiosks along the way, take your time to enjoy the scenery of beautiful Platteville. Go to www.plattevilletrailnetwork.org for more information.

The World’s Largest ‘M’ is constructed of limestone and weighs approximately 400 tons. Constructed in 1937, the giant ‘M’ measures 241 feet by 214 feet. The letter represents the first mining school in the United States. Visitors to the area can climb the steps beside the ‘M’ and enjoy a panoramic view of the tri-state area. To get to the ‘M’, take Business Hwy. 151, which turns into Co. XX heading toward Belmont, and turn left onto West Mound Road. Go straight at three stop signs and turn right into the parking lot. You can also take Broadway Street north, which turns into Co. at the city limits, and turn left onto West Mound Road, then go straight at the stop sign and take a right at the M.
