minutes of activity, is more important than one may realize. A typical warm-up routine may include general upper and lower extremity stretching with large movement patterns and deep breathing, as well as a simpler form of the exercise you will begin (i.e. walking with large strides and long arm swings before jogging). Benefits of a warming up include: reduced risk of injury, increased blood flow, increased neuromuscular synaptic activity, improved viscosity of the synovial fluid of the joint lining, and initiating the aerobic portion of exercise. Try to keep cats away from decorative lights and the allure of shiny, breakable ornaments. Fireplaces are wonderful for napping near when grates are present and secured. Be vigilant with unattended plates, holiday fare can be too rich and cause upset stomachs in our animals if they sneak a taste. Signs of depression are easy to overlook in older adults, as they’re often mistaken for other signs of aging. Studies show that when depressed, seniors may not clearly display typical signs of sadness such as crying. Instead, they tend to withdraw from the people they care about and the things they once loved to do. Signs to watch for: Irritability, withdraw, decrease in cognitive ability, increased pain and digestive problems. If you recognize any of these signs in your senior loved one, talk to him or her about what he or she is feeling. Although you may receive some resistance initially, it’s important to let him or her know that you’re there to help. From there, it’s vital that you inform his or her primary health care provider or mental health expert to have symptoms assessed professionally.
