Rustic Road 66

Lafayette County. Just off County Trunk W in the Town of Benton, follow portions of Buncombe, Kennedy, Beebe, and Ensch Roads. Length: 7.5 miles. Surface: Paved. Beautiful scenery and history distinguish this rustic road. R66 runs through the unglaciated, “driftless area of Southwestern Wisconsin. Tree-lined roads wind through the hilly fields and farm lands. In autumn, R66 provides spectacular sights of the fall harvest and colors. An abandoned lead mine complete with tin shacks, rusted ore buckets and piles of tailings are visible from Kennedy Road. This serves as a legacy to the mining industry in Wisconsin that once produced 85% of the nation’s lead.

17

Rustic Road 70

Grant County. Leave the U.S. Hwy. 61 at Liberty Ridge Road; portions of Hill Road, Ridge Road, Sleepy Hollow Road, Scenic Road to County Trunk E. Length: 10.1 miles. Surface:

Page 8 đ&#x;š˜ Summer 2020

Gravel. This rustic road meanders through the contour-stripped farms and the tree-covered hills of the Platte River Valley. Liberty Ridge Road passes by a church built in 1861 by German settlers and into the quaint community of Stitzer while the other roads pass through the rambling countryside. One of the few remaining one-room school houses in the area is located on Scenic Road.

18

Rustic Road 75

19

Rustic Road 99

Iowa County. Portions of Ogden Road, Bromley Road, and Turnbull Road between County Trunk A and County Trunk G in the Town of Mifflin. Length: 3.7 miles. Surface: Paved. R75 resides in the “Welsh Settlement area — so named because immigrants from Wales settled in Iowa County during the mid 1800s. The countryside is beautiful during all seasons. Wildflowers and wildlife abound. Grant County, Potosi. Segments of River Lane Road, Slazing Road and Brewery Hollow Road forming a loop off Hwy. 133. Length: 3.4 miles. Surface: Paved. The route reflects the region’s beer brewing history and features hills, bluffs and rolling farm lands along with various types of wildlife. The River Lane Road segment represents the only Rustic Road section that follows the Mississippi.

Gravity Hill

At Gravity Hill, your car, when stopped and shifted into neutral will begin rolling uphill. It is caused by the large deposits of zinc and lead and ore in the ground or the empty hole underground where they were mined? Is it an optical illusion? To find out, drive south from Shullsburg on County Trunk U beyond the intersection with Rennick Road. Watch for traffic and if all is clear, stop at the bottom just before the road starts up the wooded hill-side and near the farm field gate on the right. Place your gear shift lever in neutral, release the brake, and guess which way you will travel. Please beware of traffic from either direction as you do this.

62

Ocooch Living History Gardens

The gardens, located on Orange Street in Richland Center, are composed of low maintenance plants including hostas, iris, tree peonies, poppies, tulips, daffodils and daylilies, creating a long blooming season. This was created to be a botany garden of the highest aesthetic value, including two water features. Interpretive signage is included to educate visitors on the natural and Native American culture of the area.

63

Ride the bike trails

Some of the most family-friendly bike trails in South-Central Wisconsin are along former railroads. These include the Badger State Trail, which starts in Illinois, and the Military Ridge State Trail, which starts near Dodgeville. The two, which feature a variety of picturesque settings, meet on the edge of Madison, and they continue through the city with the Capital City State Trail.

Cave of the Mounds Blue Mounds, WI

67

Cave of the Mounds

This natural limestone cave near Blue Mounds is considered “the significant cave of the upper Midwest by the Chicago Academy of Sciences, and for good reason. Discovered in 1939, it contains rocks that date back 400 million years and a spectacular array of sparkling, crystallized rock formations and pools. Like most caves, it’s cool in the summer and warm in the winter.

68

Olbrich Botanical Gardens

In the heart of Madison is a nonprofit-run veritable museum of flora with 16 acres of indoor and outdoor landscapes. Established in 1952, it’s a favorite spot for weddings and educational events, and it’s open year-round thanks to its 50-foot-high, glass-enclosed Bolz Conservatory, but the best time to be there is when the butterflies are in bloom in midsummer.

69

Check out the Capitol

Wisconsin’s state capitol is the only one built on an isthmus – a mile-long finger of land separating two lakes. The building, a National Historic Landmark, is normally open year-round to any visitor (except during the pandemic) and first began offering tours in 1915, two years before construction finished on the third version of Wisconsin’s ornate tribute to democracy. A state law prevents any building within a mile of it from being taller than the bottom of the columns under its dome. Page 24 đ&#x;š˜ Summer 2020

Check out the lakes

There are lakes everywhere in Wisconsin, but the Madison area is built on five lakes known as the Yahara chain, and each has its own personality. Chief among them is Lake Mendota, which is known for great boating in the summer and ice fishing in the winter. If you head to the University of Wisconsin’s student union, you’ll find great partying on the lake’s edge, and if you head a mile west, you can reach a mile-long peninsula known as Picnic Point that is so skinny at the edge it will make you feel as if you’re walking on the water.

71

Richland Center City Arboretum

The Arboretum was established in 2003 with matching funds from an Urban Forest DNR Grant. At that time, 134 trees of 71 different species were planted. Since then, the Arboretum has been expanded to include 200 trees and over 100 shrubs. It is designed for self-guided tours 7 days a week. Each tree is labeled with a brief explanation. The Arboretum is located off Highway 14 near the City’s original location of the Waste Water Treatment plant next to the Pine River.

72

Miner Hill Trails Park/Tower Hill

The 50 acre Miner Hill Bluff overlooks the City of Richland Center from its east side. The bluff features several trails that take hikers to five scenic overlooks, wooded areas, open meadows, and to an old quarry site. There are trail heads on Court Street, Pearl Street, and Ithaca Road/N, all with limited parking. All trail overlooks are railed and the trail itself is complete with trail signs and detailed informational maps.
