Upland Hills Health renovation, capital campaign nearing completion A $32-million renovation and building project is nearing completion at Upland Hills Health (UHH), which hospital officials say will allow the organization to enhance its already acclaimed five-star healthcare services to residents of southwest Wisconsin.

UHH has shared the values of the communities it serves for more than 100 years, according to Julia Oellerich, Foundation Director at Upland Hills Health.

Those values include an unfailing commitment to family, a sense of independence and a strong work ethic.

“UHH is dedicated to the promise of offering the highest standard of healthcare,” Oellerich said.

“Our community-minded staff places an emphasis on providing quality, comprehensive healthcare, while offering a comforting, neighborly welcome to everyone who walks through our doors.”

Hospital officials are investing in the future with the new building project. The project, about two years in the making, includes a new birth center, new surgical suites, new patient rooms and much more.

“It has been impossible to ignore the construction that has been happening here,” Oellerich said. “Patients and visitors have experienced route diversions and driven around construction vehicles for a long time.

But now that the project is nearing completion, we think it has been worth the wait.”

New birth center The birth center features five labor, delivery, recovery, postpartum rooms for moms-to-be. The rooms are spacious enough to allow loved ones to be present when welcoming a new baby into the world, and offer plenty of room for visitors in the days that follow. The rooms offer jetted tubs, in-room mini refrigerators and beautiful views. A C-section suite will be located within the birth center, instead of being a floor below as it was in the past, which will provide more efficient emergency cesarean delivery.

New patient rooms The new patient rooms are fully private. Patients will no longer need to share a room with another patient.

The patient floor is a healing environment with large windows that flood the area with natural light. An emphasis was placed on views of the rolling hills that surround UHH. Space for future growth This building project doesn’t end here. Hospital officials kept future needs in mind as they developed the floorplan. The first floor includes shelled-in space for a third operating room. It also includes space for a new laboratory and emergency department.

“Building these spaces now, at today’s costs, is a fiscally responsible way to address the renovations that we know are coming in the next decade” Oellerich explained.

“The most successful rural healthcare systems are those where strong community partnerships exist,” Oellerich said. “UHH is no different. At key moments in our history, people within the communities we serve extended themselves to make sure their communitybased, independent healthcare system remained available. UHH has been successful because of this spirit of partnership.”

“Upland Hills Health has touched the lives of many community members of all ages,” they said. “This project has the potential to reach many more.

The UHH Foundation is inviting community members to participate in the “Your Family, Our Promise” Capital Campaign, which has helped this project become a reality. About $1.1 million has already been contributed and UHH officials are reaching for $1.5 million with the campaign.

History In 1827, Henry Dodge, his family, and about 40 miners began what would become the city of Dodgeville.

Dodge made a pact with the local Winnebago Indian leaders so he could build a cabin and smelter. The original community was comprised of three separate settlements: “Dodgeville”, “Dirty Hollow” and “Minersville”. Dodgeville, which was named after Dodge, grew slowly during its early years. It was incorporated as a village in the 1840s. Later a small “war” was fought with Mineral Point over which community would become the seat of Iowa County. At the time, Mineral Point was the seat, but Dodgeville residents felt they should have it. Dodgeville eventually won the “war” and Wisconsin’s oldest county courthouse. Dodgeville then saw a population boom, and it became a center for mining. Miners from England flooded the city, and the area flourished. British and Cornish architecture is still visible in the city today. Today the city is most commonly known for being the headquarters for the apparel company, Lands’ End. Source: Wikipedia

Outdoors No matter what the season, there is no better place to be than Dodgeville. Our surroundings are host to almost limitless entertainment and outdoor recreation. Outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy camping, boating, canoeing, fishing, hiking, hunting, horse-back riding, rock climbing, cross country skiing, snowmobiling, swimming and biking. For those of you who enjoy auto-touring, our winding country roads appeal to many and nothing tops viewing the fall foliage of southwest Wisconsin. We are home to three beautiful state parks: Governor Dodge State Park, Tower Hill and Blue Mounds State Park. Bike, hike, or cross-country ski on Military Ridge Trail.

Governor Dodge

Located just north of the city of Dodgeville, Governor Dodge State Park is a great place to visit. Named after Henry Dodge, the first governor of the Wisconsin Territory, the park contains geologic features indicative of the Driftless Area.

The land is mostly oak and hickory forest with some bluff outcroppings and one waterfall, Stephen’s Falls. Common activities include boating (electric motors only), fishing, picnicking and swimming on the park’s two lakes, Cox Hollow Lake and Twin Valley Lake. There is a boat launch, dam and a swimming area at each of the lakes. Away from the lakes one can find hiking trails, cross-country ski trails, mountain bike trails and horse trails.

Seasonal activities include hunting in the fall and snowmobiling in the winter.

Camping is a must at the park! Enjoy one of the many family campsites, group campsites, family/group sites for horse N SO OV NO campers, or 6 backpack sites that are O S A A available throughout the summer.

Dodgeville Parks

 Centennial Park includes a baseball field with a backstop, fences, and covered grandstand, as well as picnic tables, grills, and a tennis court. There are also horseshoe pits, playground equipment and restrooms provided for community use.  The Courthouse Pocket Park is located on the south side of the Iowa County Courthouse. The park features several picnic tables and benches for people to relax.  Harris Park is a 30-acre park that includes two baseball fields, multiple soccer fields, sand volleyball courts, a playground with shelter, an ice arena, and a paved 2-mile walking path. 27,000 square foot, multi-purpose facility provides an area for winter hockey, community events, and wedding receptions (Ley Pavilion) – Amenities include: restrooms, kitchen area, storage, and office space.  Metcalf Park is Dodgeville’s newest park. It is located on the northeast side of Dodgeville.

Trees have been planted around the outer border of the park.  Springer Park is a special use/neighborhood park located on Hwy. 23 in the northern section of the city. Springer Park is 3.6 acres and features a roofed picnic table, public restrooms and an information building. Additionally, the Dodgeville Historical Society uses this park building as an interpretive center for local and regional history.  Wilson Park is an 8-acre park neighborhood park located in west-central Dodgeville.

It is utilized in the summer by the Dodgeville Recreation Department for programs such as little league baseball, softball, t-ball and more.  The Gary C. Comer Pool (formerly Dodgeville City Pool) was built in 1988. It has two pools; the main pool has a 14 ft. deep end with two diving boards, lap lane, 2 ft. shallow end with stair entry and a hydraulic chair lift for those who need assistance in and out of the water. The wading pool is for children five and under accompanied by an adult, a zero depth entry and a bubbling tower fountain to splash around.

Golf

You’ll want to check out Dodge Point Country Club, offering 18 holes and featuring 5,804 yards of golf from the longest tees for a par of 70. The House on the Rock Resort has 27 holes of championship golf with splendid views of the surrounding countryside. Play the scenic and challenging hills at Deer Valley golf course which offers a variety of hole designs and water in play on 10 of them.

The Dodgeville Area Chamber of Commerce is located a block north of the courthouse on Iowa Street. Government

Dodgeville is the County Seat of Iowa County and proud to have the oldest, active courthouse in the state of Wisconsin.

Mayor: The Mayor of Dodgeville is elected every two years in even number years at the Spring General Election. The Mayor chairs meetings of the City Council and City Plan Commission.

The Mayor makes appointments to boards, commissions and committees with the approval of the City Council.

City Council: The City Council is also called the Common Council. It consists of eight members elected to staggered two-year terms of office. Individual members of the City Council are called alderpersons. There are two alderpersons in each of four aldermanic districts. The City Council elects one of their members as the Council President. Council members are elected at the Spring General Election and sworn into office on the 3rd Tuesday of April.

City Management: The City of Dodgeville is managed by a professional staff leading approximately 36 full-time employees, 42 volunteer fire fighters, 20 volunteer EMT’s and seasonal/part-time employees in various departments.

Chamber of Commerce

The Chamber is essentially run by its members and board of directors who are professionals, local business owners, organizations and non-profit groups. All member businesses are encouraged to have an employee/manager/owner represent the business and support the Chamber by volunteering on a committee. Whether you enjoy planning local events or have a knack for marketing, you will find a committee that interests you. You may grow both personally and professionally by volunteering.

City Recreation Programs

The Dodgeville Parks & Recreation Department is responsible for Dodgeville’s many parks and recreation activities for kids and adults alike. The department’s function is to provide recreational programs to meet the needs of all persons. The parks are maintained through this department for your enjoyment of leisure time activities. All recreation programs are available to residents and non residents of Dodgeville and individuals must register with the department for all programs prior to participating.
