History & Museums Wisconsin does indeed start here and we can prove it. We’re even home to the Point of Beginnings. While we’re a big part of the reason Wisconsin is known as America’s Dairyland, Grant County has a deep history – literally! The Mining and Rollo Jamison Museums in Platteville tell the tale of how lead mining shaped the community and its university. Go underground and tour an actual lead mine used in the late 1800s. Learn about the railroad industry too with the Boscobel Depot Museum and Fennimore Railway Museum. Or, be a kid again with the Doll and Toy Museum in Fennimore! And our history certainly goes back long before the first European settlers. Mounds built by indigenous peoples centuries ago can still be found in the region. Come celebrate all that makes Wisconsin what it is today.

grow a large pumpkin & Enter it into one the local competitions!

Join us for the Holidays Which holiday, you ask? Well, all of them? July 4th finds Bagley’s population boom from 375 to several thousand and Boscobel’s fireworks display are a regional favorite. But Platteville, Lancaster and Livingston say their fireworks top those. Check them out and decide for yourself. Halloween decorations are a sight to behold in many of our communities but it’s the ‘Safe and Spooky Halloween’ at Stonefield Historic Site in Cassville on October 17th that will be a family favorite. The Christmas season tops them all and several communities host craft sales to help you find that one of a kind special gift while you shop small and enjoy the friendly welcome that our businesses offer.

Southwest Wisconsin Wine Trail

is a consortium of 5 Wisconsin wineries that are located within the Upper Mississippi River Valley AVA (American Viticultural Area). These wineries share a passion for their craft – creating wine. They each have a story to tell. As you visit these wineries you will find that there is a common thread to each story. That thread is the challenge of making great wine from new and emerging grape varieties that are cold hardy enough to withstand the weather of the Upper Midwest. Some of these wineries make their wine using only their own grapes and others wineries don’t grow any grapes but do source from local growers. Some of them also make wines from fruit, such as cranberries, apples, cherries and currants. You can even find Mead, a wine made from honey. So take the trail that winds through the beautiful hills and valleys of Southwest Wisconsin and taste the passion and the variety for yourself. & The Driftless Area “Wow!” That’s the first thing most people say when they first visit this region closely followed by the question, “Why is this so different?” Well welcome to “The Driftless”. The answer to your question goes back some 10,000 to 12,000 years to the last great ice age. Glaciers were pushing down from the north that were leveling and scouring everything in their path…except for what you see here. The glaciers spared this area which preserved our hills and then the waters they unleased as they receded carved the steep valleys you see today.

Used by permission of Trout Unlimited.

Today “the Driftless” covers over 24,000 square miles in a four state area. That’s three times larger than the Black Hills in case you were wondering. The Mississippi River carves through the center of it all but that’s just the beginning. There are literally thousands of miles of streams and rivers waiting for you to discover them. And the cool spring fed streams make for a trout fishing paradise. The hills, the valleys, the waterways, even the vegetation make a stunning and beautiful region like nowhere else. Welcome to “the Driftless” and go ahead, say it again….”Wow”.

Restaurants & Supper Clubs Ask any local “where’s a good place to eat?” and they’ll probably give you a list a mile long!

Long day, relaxing day or any day. Nothing beats a great meal with friends.

Grab a bite at a diner, wind down with a drink in a casual atmosphere at a supper club, get a taste of bar-b-que at a smokehouse, have a mouth-watering burger made from fresh, local beef, or try a slice of pizza – boy, do we have good pizza and it’s homemade.

…and on rainy days visit one of our Country bars, roadhouses or aN old fasioned saloon!

Ok, not every day will be a perfect weather day, that’s how we keep everything so green! So what do you do on that day when it’s raining? Two things immediately come to mind. It’s the perfect day for shopping. You’ll be pleasantly surprised by the treasures to be found in our many one-of-a-kind locally owned stores. And the museums (Pages 6 & 7) offer hours of discovery. Got to keep the kids entertained? Try bowling, or a movie, or one of our community libraries. Here’s one you might not have considered…coffee shops. Every one of them has an assortment of board games waiting for you along with those aromatic coffee blends and specialty sandwich fare all in a comfortable family friendly setting. And on those hot summer afternoons when you wish you had a pool… BOSCOBEL BOWL & guess what, we’ve got those too. Community pools and BANQUET family aquatic centers are open to everyone. Splash away! 16971 Hwy. 61 S, Boscobel, WI 608-375-2200
