History
The Village of Brooklyn continues to flourish. It began with nearby town ownership and formed as a village in 1905. The railroad brought prosperity in 1864 and now the village in 2020 filled its’ first business park. The population has blossomed from 250 to 1466 residents. A little bit of history takes us from when Hiram Capwell purchased land in 1855 and filed a plat map with himself as proprietor of the Village of Brooklyn until our present day family friendly small village. We make history every day. Our school flourishes from beginnings in 1883 in Legion Park to the second school, on site of the current one, in 1903. Our businesses have evolved and have staying power, from the Duplex Windmill factory in 1883 to local long time family businesses plus banks, entertainment, food, convenience stores and more. Our volunteer groups like the Brooklyn Fire Department forming in 1906 and adding EMS services to our youth and service groups who make memories every day by helping their neighbors. The Brooklyn Area Historical Society’s goal is to preserve and respect the history of the Village of Brooklyn and the surrounding area. We receive community artifacts from current and past residents and hope to one day have a public place to share these treasures with others. Please enjoy photos of these on our Facebook page, Facebook.com/BAHSWI.com.
