Chamber Welcome

Welcome. We at the Chamber know that 2020 was a difficult year for businesses in the area, their families and friends. Brooklyn has pulled together over the last year to help out each other and our businesses. We are looking forward to the new year when everyone can be open to full capacity. Please know that the Chamber is here to help in any way that we can. Last year we started up our Geocache tour and have had wonderful feedback. It is bringing in visitors from outside of the Brooklyn area. Check out the details on the map page of the Guide. This next year we are looking forward to holding events like the Business Fair and participating in Brooklyn Night Out. The calendar included in the Guide is based on previous years and will be subject to changes, but updates will be posted on the Brooklyn Area Linda Kuhlman - President Chamber of Commerce website. Ann Wanless - Vice President In the coming year, please thank our Erin Turner - Secretary Chamber members and additional sponsors Sue McCallum - Treasurer of this Guide when you are visiting their busibrooklynareachamber@gmail.com nesses. Here’s hoping 2021 is a better year.

Town of Brooklyn’s Beautiful Parks

Liberty Pole Hill Park is a three-acre green, sweet spot atop of a quarried hill west of Brooklyn on Wisconsin State Road 92. This location was a gathering place for soldiers being recruited for the Civil War. Today is a great location for small outdoor meetings or family gatherings. There is a pavilion, picnic tables, barbeque grill and play equipment for children. The park is a public facility and can be used by anyone, however to gain electrical access this is a nominal fee. Visit the Town’s website for additional details at https:// townofbrooklyn.org

Brooklyn Area Veterans Memorial Park honors our veterans from the local area. Erected in 2016, from generous and dedicated businesses, veterans, countless volunteers and their families, the serene site is located on Main Street next to the Town Hall Building. We encourage everyone to visit the memorial to pay respect to a veteran or reflect on the courage and sacrifices made by others. We welcome your support through a tax-deductible donation, paver purchase or inscribing a veteran’s name on the wall. Visit our website for details on how you can help at http://brooklynveteransmemorial.org Kathy Pennington, Parks Commissioner, Town of Brooklyn brooklynareachamberofcommerce.org ~ www.facebook.com/BrooklynACoC

Brooklyn Area History

The Village of Brooklyn continues to flourish. It began with nearby town ownership and formed as a village in 1905. The railroad brought prosperity in 1864 and now the village in 2020 filled its’ first business park. The population has blossomed from 250 to 1466 residents. A little bit of history takes us from when Hiram Capwell purchased land in 1855 and filed a plat map with himself as proprietor of the Village of Brooklyn until our present day family friendly small village. We make history every day. Our school flourishes from beginnings in 1883 in Legion Park to the second school, on site of the current one, in 1903. Our businesses have evolved and have staying power, from the Duplex Windmill factory in 1883 to local long time family businesses plus banks, entertainment, food, convenience stores and more. Our volunteer groups like the Brooklyn Fire Department forming in 1906 and adding EMS services to our youth and service groups who make memories every day by helping their neighbors. The Brooklyn Area Historical Society’s goal is to preserve and respect the history of the Village of Brooklyn and the surrounding area. We receive community artifacts from current and past residents and hope to one day have a public place to share these treasures with others. Please enjoy photos of these on our Facebook page, Facebook.com/BAHSWI.com.

Brooklyn Village and Town Resources Well, we made it through 2020. The last year included some bad and some good things happening in the Village. Residents started a Little Free Pantry outside the Methodist Church. Be sure to check it out. The Recreation Committee continues to host pickleball in the gym on the weekdays during the winter months and on the tennis courts at Legion Park the rest of the year. Recreation also continues to hold their exercise classes on Mondays and Wednesdays. Follow Brooklyn Recreation on Facebook @BrooklynRecWI and their website, brooklynrecreation. org, for updates on additional exercise classes, events in 2021 and summer recreation program. Contact the Village if you’re interested in renting the community building or the park shelters. The Anchor Club, Main Street Music and More and Downhome Cookhouse all suffered some setbacks over the last year due to COVID restrictions, but they have come through thanks to the patronage of Brooklyn area residents and visitors. The Village is happy to report that Phase I of the Business Complex is complete. We have three great businesses currently in the park -- Capital City Culvert, O&A Manufacturing and Northern Metal & Roofing. A fourth business will be joining this spring. Welcome to Brooklyn.

The Brooklyn Fire and EMS Protection District was established in 1906 staffed by volunteers from within the community. Today the departments are still staffed by volunteers and serving the municipalities of Town of Rutland, Town of Oregon, Town of Brooklyn, Town of Union, and the Village of Brooklyn. The district lies in Dane, Green, and Rock counties. In 2020 The Brooklyn EMS responded to 241 calls for service and the Fire Department responded to 157 calls with the 40 plus members between both services. Pictured is the Brooklyn Fire Departments newest apparatus, a 2021 Pierce Velocity Pumper carrying 1000 gallons of water, and equipment for structural fire fighting and Motor vehicle crashes. Without the support of the community and the municipalities we serve, this apparatus would not have been possible. For those who would like more information about volunteering and the Brooklyn Fire and EMS Protection District, you may contact us via our website www.brooklynfireems.org or through our Facebook page Brooklyn WI Fire and EMS.

Brooklyn Wildlife Areas

The Village has three unique wildlife areas to be enjoyed for nature viewing, walking a pet or hunting. Brooklyn Wildlife Area Brooklyn Wildlife Area is located between the villages of Oregon, Brooklyn and Belleville, straddling the Dane/Green County line, about 15 miles south of Madison. Access to the property is from Dane County Highway D, 7 miles west of Brooklyn off Bell Brook Road. The property currently consists of 2,608 acres of state-owned, 337 acres of easement and 151 acres of leased lands. Dominant cover types include sedge meadow marsh, riparian hardwoods, oak ridges, restored prairie and farmed cropland. Story Creek, a Class 2 trout stream, runs north to south through the property. About 435 acres are leased as part of the Story Creek Stream Bank Protection project to protect the stream and buffer the wildlife area. In total, 3,531 acres are available for public hunting, fishing and other recreation. Recreation The Brooklyn Wildlife Area offers many recreational opportunities. • Auto travel - on public roads through and adjacent to property • Biking - on public roads through and adjacent to property • Birding - Known for yellow-breasted chat, Bells vireo, Cerulean warbler and Henslows sparrow • Cross country skiing (along Ice Age Trail) • Fishing - Story Creek, a quality trout stream runs through property • Hiking - Ice Age Trail runs through property • Hunting - especially noted for stocked and wild pheasant (2 p.m. closure), deer, turkey, rabbit, squirrel, some waterfowl, quail, gray partridge and mourning doves. • Trapping • Wild edibles/gathering • Wildlife viewing Liberty Creek Wildlife Area Liberty Creek Wildlife Area is located in Albany and Brooklyn townships off of English Settlement Road eight miles south of Brooklyn. The property currently consists of 563 acres of state owned and 20 acres of leased lands. The property is mostly marsh with native vegetation or canary grass. There are 25 acres of upland woods and 20 acres of upland grass and brush on the area. Liberty Creek, a Class 3 trout stream, flows north to south for a mile through the property. Harveys Marsh Federal Wetland Protection Area 683 acres accessed off Hwy 14, just 2.6 miles from Brooklyn. By regulation, WPAs are open to hunting, fishing, and trapping, in accordance with State laws. Other important wildlife-dependent uses allowed include wildlife observation, photography, and environmental education. WPAs preserve wetlands and grasslands critical to waterfowl and other wildlife. These public lands are managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. 14
