Neighborhood Health Partners Submitted by Angie Donovan, Program Director SWCAP Neighborhood Health Partners was established in 1973 and providing services in Southwest Wisconsin for 45 years. The clinic is a program of Southwest Wisconsin Community Action Program. We offer three clinic sites at Platteville, Dodgeville and Monroe. The mission of SWCAP Neighborhood Health Partners is to provide confidential and affordable reproductive health care to women and men of all ages in an atmosphere that promotes the dignity and respect of the individual while providing the education needed to make informed choices regarding their sexual health. Our goal is to assist each individual in developing a Reproductive Life Plan that promotes healthy pregnancy if desired, assists in preventing pregnancy if not desired and maximizes their health over a lifetime. The program is able to accept many private insurances and BadgerCare. We also offer Family Planning Only

Services (FPOS) which make almost all services free if you meet the following criteria, even if you have insurance: a US Citizen, a resident of Wisconsin (if you are a student living here, you are a resident), and you make less than $3,000/ month. For those who do not qualify for FPOS, we offer a sliding fee scale based on income. Our services include primary preventative care with physical exams including breast and cervical cancer screening, contraceptive methods, STD/STI testing and treatment, some post sexual assault services, evaluation and treatment of common health problems, menopause management and pregnancy services. Cam Scanner

 CamScanner brings homework into the 21st century. Say you write a homework assignment by hand and don’t have time to type it up before submitting it on the class website. CamScanner lets users take pictures of their homework (or anything) and order the sequence of shots. It then consolidates the images in a single PDF. It beats handing in nothing.

Brainscape 

Brainscape enables users to create their own flashcards on the website or mobile app, or choose from thousands of existing flashcards written by publishers, teachers, and students. Share them with friends, and sync between all of your mobile devices.

Evernote stay organized

 Handwritten notes are sooo high school. With Evernote, users can compose notes, bookmark keywords, and combine documents into virtual notepads for better organization.  The up-and-coming calendar app Fantastical 2 displays a traditional five-day calendar at the top with a scrolling list of your upcoming events below, allowing you to quickly scan your schedule. The calendar includes a search function and maps, so you can get where you need to be fast.

FaceTime 

FaceTime makes it possible to keep in touch. While away at college, students can use Apple’s FaceTime to catch up with friends and family back home. The app allows users to make video calls from their Mac to another Mac, or to an iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch.

Pokémon Go 

Pokémon Go offers an easy way to make friends outside of the dorm. Making new friends is as important as keeping old ones. You’re bound to run into fellow Pokémon trainers at Pokéstops across campus. It’s easy enough to strike up a conversation, since you already have a shared interest. Pro tip: Bring along an external battery charger and offer your new friend some juice.

GroupMe 

The worst part about group messaging is the flood of notifications whenever the conversation picks up. GroupMe allows you to mute specific chats, which is helpful if you’re involved in a half dozen threads for different student-run organizations. Many college students are struggling to graduate without accumulating substantial student loan debt. Data compiled from Market Watch, an economy and investing resource, has found that nearly 70 percent of bachelor’s degree recipients leave school with considerable debt. It’s estimated that America’s student loan debt grows almost $3,000 per second. The Institute for College Access & Success has listed the average American student debt at $29,000. The Canadian Federation of Students lists the average debt at $27,000 for Canadian students. The burden of debt may cause graduates to accept the first job offer that comes along and/ or impede their ability to buy houses or make other large purchases. Only about 40 percent of borrowers are paying down their debts after landing a job. Graduates should realize that many loans only have six-month grace periods before repayment begins. Those who feel that student loan repayment may be difficult can speak to a financial advisor to go over loan consolidation, refinancing or extending the repayment period to make monthly payments more manageable.

Buy secondhand furnishings. College students living in their own apartments or dorm rooms may not have the financial resources to purchase new furniture. Rather than purchasing brand new items they are likely to discard after moving out or graduating, college students can purchase secondhand items from local thrift stores or used furniture retailers that offer sturdy furnishings at low prices.



Become a resident advisor. Resident advisors, often referred to as “R.A.’s,” typically receive free or reduced room and board in exchange for living in the dorms and monitoring the floors they live on. Competition to be an R.A. can be competitive, but students who become R.A.’s can save thousands of dollars on room and board costs over the course of their time at school.



Make your own meals. Meal plans may be ideal for college students during their freshmen years, when students may still be adjusting to campus life. But older college students can skip the meal plan in favor of preparing their own meals. Doing so can save students substantial amounts of money, and some students may even prefer the variety available at the local grocery store over the more limited offerings available at dining halls or other campus eateries.



Move off campus. Some schools do not permit freshmen and sophomores to live off-campus, but older students may find that private housing is more affordable than on-campus apartments or dormitories. Students eligible to live in off-campus housing can contact local real estate agents to get a feel for the off-campus housing market before making a final decision.

Rountree Branch Trail – A community gift to our UWP Students

beaver, mink, rabbits, squirrel, turkeys and pheasants along the trail.

You, as UWP Students, are part of our community treasure and culture. When ~1500 Platteville community members came together to build the Rountree Branch trail along the stream through our community, we did so with you in mind. We not only paved a three mile trail connecting you to the many other trails in the Platteville trail network, we lit this section as well.

Whether it is walking, biking, jogging, roller blading or running, the trail is constantly used by our students for health and fitness. We have also added the Nutrition World Outdoor Fitness Center so that you have a state of the art free fitness center to work out at. This is located next to the dog park one and one half miles from the Trail entrance. The adjacent stream is a Class 1 Trout stream, so many enjoy the challenge of catching 20 + inch brown trout. At the far end of the Rountree Branch Trail above the gazebo near the bat house, we have just added a mowed walking trail that will provide you a nature walk through prairie and wetland. And ‘Hey Students don’t miss out on the PCA 5K/10K Halloween Monster Dash Run! Dress up in your scariest costume for a race that’s sure to put fright in your feet! Halloween themed prizes and swag for all runners!” And finally you can enjoy the access to many of our businesses along the trail to include restaurants (Mexican, pizza, Chinese, American,etc), pubs and shopping in local unique shops as well as big box stores. The Rountree Branch Trail is part of ten + miles of Platteville Trails and connects to the 5 Mile Mound View State Trail which ends in Belmont. Enjoy!

You can access the David Canny Rountree Branch Trail from the university trail system or from Markee Drive under the bridge just below the football stadium and Rountree Hall. It will lead you to many social, fitness and retail opportunities to meet your needs. Many students enjoy the social opportunities to connecting with the ‘ever smiling’ trail users. There are many points – pubs, restaurants, Dog Park, Fitness Park, benches and picnic tables - along the trail to meet friends and build university memories and relationships. If you are a history buff, you might take in the historical kiosks to learn about the building of the trail, the 2014 tornado and Mill Pond, the original Platteville Brewery, the Empire State Mine and the ‘blood factory’. Our many trailside artistic bike racks and our many native plant gardens such as the ‘Study of Life’ garden are sights to see. You will spot deer, turtles, swans, 2018 College Guide - Page 18

Free Time? - Get Outside! If you’re an outdoor enthusiast, you’ll be right at home in Platteville. We are located in the heart of the “Sportsmen’s Paradise” of southwest Wisconsin. With rolling hills, tree-filled valleys; and trout streams; this area is perfect for hunters and fishermen year round. Deer, duck, and turkey are plentiful; plus, the streams and rivers offer ample opportunities for anglers. Hiking & Biking The “World’s Largest M” is constructed of limestone and measures 214’ by 241.’ The letter represents the first mining school in the United States. Visitors to the area can climb the steps beside the “M” and enjoy a panoramic view of the tri-state area. Don’t forget your camera!

NELSON DEWEY: Located in Cassville, this 756-acre Wisconsin state park is situated right on the Mississippi River. Approximately 45 minutes from Platteville. WYALUSING STATE PARK: With 2,628-acres, this Wisconsin state park is at the confluence of the Mississippi and Wisconsin rivers in the town of Wyalusing. One hour from Platteville

Platteville Trails ROUNTREE BRANCH TRAIL: The Rountree Branch Trail winds through our entire community and connects to the green-way at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville. MILITARY RIDGE STATE TRAIL: A 40 mile military trail from 1855 is now used for hiking and biking north of Grant Count, connecting Dodgeville and Madison. PECATONICA TRAIL: A 10 mile trail situated in the Bonner Branch Valley connects Belmont with the Cheese Country Trail, another 47 mile long trail heading east.

Boating/Fishing Platteville is located within 15 miles of the Mississippi River, 30 miles of the Wisconsin River, and just 10 minutes from Lake Joy for those that love being on the water.

Hirsch Farm For the “extreme biker,” join like-minded souls at “The Farm” on Tuesday nights from 5:30 p.m. until dark. The Hirsch Farm is located southwest of Platteville and is home to some of the best mountain bike trails around including a challenging single track.

Canoeing/Kayaking/Tubing Canoe or tube the Platte or Grant Rivers, which meander through our scenic area.

Disc Golf UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN - PLATTEVILLE: Located in on the University of Wisconsin Platteville campus, this challenging course starts at on the West side of Glenview Commons and is free of charge. WESTVIEW PARK: Another free Disc Golf Course; smaller, but a fun course with plenty of trees. Birding There are a large variety of birds that can be seen in the area. Eagles maintain a constant presence and spotting one is always an aweinspiring experience. UPPER MISSISSIPPI RIVER FISH AND WILDLIFE REFUGE: Areas in Cassville and Potosi allow for spectacular bird watching as well as hosts special birding events such as Bald Eagle Days. Snowmobiling Snowmobile trails are accessible to the public with purchase of WI Trail Pass and valid snowmobile registration. Skiing Cross-Country Ski Trails wind through the area. Downhill skiers can check out the powder in nearby Galena, at Chestnut Mountain Resort, and Dubuque, at Sundown Mountain Resort. CHESTNUT MOUNTAIN RESORT: 50 minutes from Platteville, Chestnut Mountain Resort is home to some of the best Midwest skiing as well as to an award winning Terrain Park.
