The entire staff of the Verona Area School District (VASD) from teachers to support staff, food service, custodians, administrators and Board of Education is completely committed to our mission and focused on making this the best educational experience in the state of Wisconsin for your child(ren)!

Welcome to the 2018 – 2019 school year! Each school year is an exciting and event-filled year for VASD students and staff; the 2018 – 2019 school year will be no different. Here are just a few of very exciting activities for this coming year:

Building for 2020 - In April of 2017, the voters of the Verona Area School District overwhelmingly approved three referendum questions to build a new high school, as well as remodel and repurpose Badger Ridge Middle School/Core Knowledge Charter School and the existing high school and K-Wing. Additionally, voters approved an operational referendum to pay for additional staff related to the new building. If you have been out near the corner of West Verona Avenue and Epic Lane lately, you have seen a lot of activity on our building site. As I am writing this column, the tower crane is being erected and soon you will see

Personalized learning - In April of 2013, the Board of Education approved the goal that every student in VASD would have a personalized learning plan. A great deal of work on building the necessary technology infrastructure and staff training has occurred since the Board adopted this goal. Starting this year, we will begin the implementation of personalized learning in every classroom – every school. This year, the components of implementation will be: • Academic goal setting for students • Learner profiles • Teacher professional development (this has been on-going since 2013) • Epiphany Learning access for parents (this is our software platform) You can find the most up-to-date information on our website at verona.k12.wi.us/PersonalizedLearning.

Strategic Planning - The District is currently engaged in the process of developing a five-year strategic plan. The planning committee, comprised of 30 people including students, parents, staff, Board members and community members, met four times in the last few months of the school year to formulate a draft of

what we refer to as strategic pillars. In July, the Board approved those five strategic pillars and they are: Authentic Relationships; Safe, Inclusive Learning Environments; High Expectations for Every Student; Supporting and Empowering Staff; Equitable Allocation of Resources. You will be hearing and seeing more about this strategic plan through the course of the year. In the meantime, you can find our agendas, minutes from the meetings as well as resources the Strategic Planning Committee utilized under the “About VASD” tab.

Verona Area School District Pre-K Program What is Verona Area Pre-K? Verona Area Pre-K is a community based preschool program for four-year-old children residing within the Verona Area School District.

Who is eligible for Verona Area Pre-K? Any four-year-old living in the Verona Area School District (four years old by September 1).

There are no early admissions.

When are the classes?

Classes run Tuesday through Friday for 3 hours and 10 minutes / 7:50-11:00 AM or 8:3011:40 AM or 11:30 AM-2:40 PM (Times approximate.) The school year runs the same as the Verona Area School District calendar.

Where will my child attend?

Children are enrolled in the Verona Area School District’s program but taught in a local community preschool/childcare location.

Families will list their 1st, 2nd, and 3rd choice preference when they register online.

Who are the teachers?

The play-based, developmentally appropriate programs are taught by highly qualified Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction licensed Pre-K teachers. A co-teacher is assigned to classrooms of more than 12 students.

How do I register?

What is the cost?

This is a tuition-free program. A fee may be charged for supplies or snacks. Some locations offer optional extended childcare. Families are responsible for childcare cost beyond the Pre-K program. Families must arrange childcare on a first-come, first-serve basis.

What will my child learn?

Children will participate in play-based activities that provide rich learning experiences. A focus on learning through play allows children to gain skills in all areas including: social-emotional, cognitive, creative expression, early literacy, early math, and self-help. Teachers will use materials and curriculum that enhance those experiences through a hands-on approach.

What if I don’t have transportation?

Transportation will be provided if the child lives, or is cared for, at least ¼ mile or more from the Pre-K site! Families needing bussing services anytime during the year will be limited to picking a Pre- K site within their attendance area. Your attendance area school will be determined by where your child is picked up and dropped off. Families participating in the Spanish Two-Way Immersion Program will be bussed to Pooh Bear Child Care and Preschool.

The Pre-K program has a strong focus on family-school communication with regular family outreach workshops, activities and conferences.

Sugar Creek Elementary Read ALL about us!

Our website is an excellent source for information about Sugar Creek. New to Sugar Creek?

Students and their families in Grades 1 – 5 who are new to Sugar Creek are invited to our annual New Family Night, held this year on Thursday, August 23rd. Please call 845-4705 for more information.

Supply Drop Off Parents and students may meet the teachers and drop off school supplies on Thursday, August 30th from 5:00 – 6:00 p.m.

Kindergarten Information Kindergarten families will have a pre-scheduled hour block of time on Tuesday, September 4th, to meet the teachers, have questions answered, and drop off supplies. The first full day of school for Kindergarten students will be on Wednesday, September 5th.

First Day of School All students should report directly to their classrooms.

Students may enter the building after the first bell at 7:35 a.m.

Classes begin at 7:45 a.m. and end at 2:35 p.m.

Student Absences In accordance with School Board Policy 431, attendance and tardies are closely monitored. Attendance is taken at 7:45 each morning. We ask that parents call 845-4700 before the start of school to inform Sugar Creek if your child will be absent or tardy.

Behavioral Management Sugar Creek has been recognized by the State of Wisconsin as a Positive Behavior Intervention Systems (PBIS) School of Merit AND School of Distinction! PBIS is a process of teaching and supporting students and staff to follow four basic school-wide expectations:

Verona Area School District Bullying Policy The Verona Area School District strives to provide a safe, secure and respectful learning environment for all students in school buildings, on school grounds, in school buses and at school-sponsored activities. Bullying has a harmful social, physical, psychological and academic impact on bullies, victims and bystanders. The District shall consistently and vigorously address bullying so that there is no disruption to the learning environment and learning process.

Bullying behavior is prohibited in all schools, buildings, property and educational environments, including any property or vehicle owned, leased or used by the District.

This includes public transportation regularly used by students to go to and from school.

Educational environments include, but are not limited to, every activity under school supervision.

“Bullying” is defined as deliberate or intentional behavior using words or actions, intended to cause fear, intimidation or harm. Bullying may be repeated behavior and involves an

imbalance of power. The behavior may be motivated by an actual or perceived distinguishing characteristic, such as, but not limited to: age; national origin; race; ethnicity; religion; gender; gender identity; sexual orientation; physical attributes; physical or mental ability or disability; and social, economic or family status. Bullying behavior can be: • Physical (e.g. assault, hitting or punching, kicking, theft, threatening behavior) • Verbal (e.g. threatening or intimidating language, teasing or name calling, racist remarks) • Indirect (e.g. spreading cruel rumors intimidation through gestures, social exclusion and sending insulting messages or pictures by mobile phone or using the Internet - also known as cyber bullying).

Glacier Edge Elementary With a motto of “Work Hard.

Be Nice.”, Glacier Edge Elementary takes pride in its 595 students. The school is a PBIS School of Merit and prides itself in the nearly 1,000 “Good News Calls” made from the principal last year for all the great things happening it its classrooms.

Glacier is one of two schools in the district to host the TwoWay Immersion Program in the school district, teaching children in Spanish for half of their day Theresa Taylor, Principal and English for the other half. The school is proud to share that their students are held accountable at their monthly community gatherings to recognize positives and celebrate the school’s BIG 4 (Be Responsible Be Safe, Be Ready, Be Respectful). And to ensure those goals are met, the “Tower of Power” program allows students to celebrate their victories in day-to-day learning with incentives that include fun such as a Fancy Friday lunches, the Staff Olympics, dress up days, and even a hallway dance party!

Outside of the classroom, Glacier Edge keeps busy not only with their own impressive MakerSpace allowing for computer coding/programming, a Lego Wall, Osmos, and 3D printers, but also focuses on its after-school clubs, homework help program and its homework club in Nakoma Heights neighborhood.

Studies also continue in the community with active learning at the nearby Whalen Pond as a partnership with the University of Wisconsin and the City of Verona. In addition, the school offers a Vanderbilt University science and math partnership.

On the extracurricular side, kids can keep active outside of the classroom with fun including “Girls on the Run”, “Born to Move”, soccer leagues and the Color Run. Lastly, the school has very active parent groups: the school’s very own Continuous Improvement Team, a PTO and Correr La Voz (Spanish speaking parent leadership group).

Notice for Directory Information The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), a Federal law, requires that the Verona Area School District, with certain exceptions, obtain your written consent prior to the disclosure of personally identifiable information from your child’s education records. However, the Verona Area School District may disclose appropriately designated “directory information” without written consent, unless you have advised our District to the contrary in accordance with District procedures. The primary purpose of directory information is to allow the Verona Area School District to include this type of information from your child’s education records in certain school publications.

Examples include: • A playbill, showing your student’s role in a drama production; • The annual yearbook; • Honor roll or other recognition lists; • Graduation programs; and

Directory information, which is information that is generally not considered harmful or an invasion of privacy if released, can also be disclosed to outside organizations without a parent’s prior written consent. Outside organizations include, but are not limited to, companies that manufacture class rings or publish yearbooks.

The Verona Area School District has designated the following information as directory information: • Student’s name • Participation in officially recognized activities and sports • Address • Telephone listing • Weight and height of members of athletic teams • Electronic mail address • Photograph • Degrees, honors, and awards received • Date and place of birth • Major field of study • Dates of attendance • Grade level • The most recent educational agency or institution attended If you do not want the Verona Area School District to disclose directory information from your child’s education records you

must notify the District in writing within 30 days of this published notice or within 14 days of enrollment on an annual basis.

Request forms to Withhold Directory Data are available at the District Office or at any of the school offices. Forms should be returned to the District Office. Any previous notices on file with the Verona Area School District withholding the disclosure of directory information are now void.

In addition, two federal laws require local educational agencies (LEAs) receiving assistance under the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 (ESEA) to provide military recruiters, upon request, with three directory information categories – names, addresses and telephone listings – unless parents have advised the LEA that they do not want their student’s information disclosed without their prior written consent.

If you do not want the Verona Area School District to disclose directory information from your child’s education records without your prior written consent to military recruiters or Institutions of Higher Education, you must notify the District in writing within 30 days of this published notice or within 14 days of enrollment. Notice of Educational Options

Approximately 450 students at Sugar Creek and Glacier Edge Elementary Schools are already beginning to prepare themselves to be competitive in the global marketplace. Each day as they report to their Two-Way Immersion (TWI) classrooms, they will learn to communicate, read, and write in Spanish and English as well as interact in a diverse society.

VASD’s Two-Way Immersion (TWI) program is reaching more and more students each year. The goal of the program is to prepare students to become bilingual, biliterate, and bicultural while achieving high levels of success academically, linguistically, and socially. Presently, the program encompasses grades K-5 at each site and will continue to grow into middle school in the 2019-20 school year.

TWI classrooms are open to students from all language backgrounds and cultures and are additive in nature, meaning that students learn in two languages from the moment in which they enter the program until they complete it. Children in TWI classrooms spend 50 percent of their day learning academic content in Spanish and 50 percent of their day learning in English.

Educational research supports the effectiveness of the TwoWay Immersion model for all students*. In addition to positive academic outcomes, there are benefits of bilingualism that reach far beyond the classroom. As reported in TIME magazine in July 2013, neurological studies show that bilingual brains function more efficiently and flexibly with higher levels of reasoning.

Bilingualism also improves the ability to multitask, grasp ideas, and reconcile conflicts while delaying the onset of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.

The instructional approach in Two-Way Immersion classrooms is enrichment education for all students as they learn rigorous academic content in two languages while becoming cross-culturally competent. • Enrollment in a private school of the family’s choosing (at the family’s own cost, as applicable).

• Enrollment in a home-based private educational program as provided under state law.

Educational options for children who reside in the District but who are enrolled in, and attending, a private school or homebased private educational program include the following: • Private school students in the high school grades have the opportunity to apply for approval to take up to two courses per semester in a District school, pursuant to section 118.145(4) of the state statutes.

Resident students who are enrolled in a home-based private educational program have the opportunity to: • Apply for approval to take up to two courses per semester in public schools as provided under section 118.53.

• Participate in District interscholastic athletics and other District extra-curricular activities as provided under section 118.133.

Application forms are being sent to all homes with a notice to parents or guardians. To apply for free or reduced price meals or free milk, households must fill out the application and return it to the school (unless notified at the start of the school year that children are eligible through direct certification). Additional copies are available at the office in each school. The information provided on the application will be used for the purpose of determining eligibility and may be verified at any time during the school year by agency or other program officials. Applications may be submitted at any time during the year.

To obtain free or reduced price meals or free milk for children in a household where one or more household members receive FoodShare, FDPIR, or Wisconsin Works (W-2) cash benefits, list the FoodShare, FDPIR or W-2 case number, list the names of all school children, sign the application, and return it to the school office.

For the school officials to determine eligibility for free or reduced price meals or free milk of households not receiving FoodShare, FDPIR or W-2 cash benefits, the household must provide the following information requested on the application: names of all household members, total number of household members, and the adult signing the application form must also list the last four digits of his or her Social Security Number or mark the box to the right of “Check if no SSN”. Also, the income received by each household member must be provided by amount and source (wages, welfare, child support, etc.).

Under the provisions of the free and reduced price meal and free milk policy (Title of Determining Official) will review applications and determine eligibility. If a parent or guardian is dissatisfied with the ruling of the official, he/she may wish to discuss the decision with the determining official on an informal basis. If the parent/guardian wishes to make a formal appeal, he/she may make a request either orally or in writing to: (Name, Title, Address and Telephone of Hearing Official).

If a hearing is needed to appeal the decision, the policy contains an outline of the hearing procedure.

If a household member becomes unemployed or if the household size changes, the family should contact the school. Such changes may make the household eligible for reduced price meals or free meals or free milk if the household income falls at or below the levels shown above, and they may reapply at that time.

Consent of the parent/guardian is needed for other purposes such as waiver of text book fees.

Lunch Time!

• We provide healthy meal choices while emphasizing fruits and vegetables, and whole grains that meet the USDA guidelines.

• Verona Area Schools have an “offer” rather than a “serve” meal program. Students are required to take only three of the five food groups for lunch. Lunch includes a protein, vegetable, fruit, whole grain/bread and milk group. The USDA regulations do require that one of the three food-group choices on a student’s tray must be a serving of fruit or vegetables. Students are required to take three out of the four food groups for breakfast. High school students have access to ala carte items, which features individually priced items such as sandwiches, fresh fruit, yogurt, string cheese, bagels and cream cheese, etc. Ala carte items may not be purchased unless funds are available in their meal account.

• The Verona Area School District has a policy for children unable to pay the full price of meals served under the National School Breakfast and Lunch Programs. Each school office and the District office have a copy of the policy, which may be reviewed by interested parties.

• If your child has a special diet or food allergy, please contact the school nurse, or the Child Nutrition Office at 845-4139.

Come join us for breakfast • Breakfast is served at all of the schools for only $1.05 per middle school student, $1.10 per high school student. Reduced and elementary breakfast in the classrooms is no charge.

• The National School Breakfast Program meals must meet the current Dietary Guidelines for Americans and must provide at least ¼ of a child’s daily requirement for calories, protein, calcium, iron, vitamin A and vitamin C. • Generally, school breakfast will consist of milk, fruit and 100% fruit juice, and a main dish or item that includes grains, and/or protein source. Children who eat breakfast show an increased ability to learn, better academic performance and may have a decreased risk of being overweight.

Kindergarten Information Kindergarten students do not attend school or ride the bus until Wednesday, September 5. On Friday, August 31 or Tuesday, September 4, Kindergarten families (and students) will have an opportunity to drop off school supplies, meet their teachers, visit the classroom and get an overview of what’s ahead.

This year, our theme is “Super Powers.” We will use this theme to recognize students for Michelle Nummerdor, growing their “Super Powers” of Principal persistence, cooperation, respect, reflection, generosity, self-control, creativity, and courage.

We will kick-off the year with our All-School Drop-In and Picture Day on Thursday, August 30 from 4:00 – 6:00 pm. This is an opportunity for families to visit their child’s classroom and have their child’s picture taken for our yearbook.

Verona Area International School Welcome back and Ni hao! The entire Verona Area International School (VAIS) staff is eager to welcome students to the start of the 2018-2019 school year.

VAIS will continue to provide a Chinese Immersion program with an emphasis on preparing our learners to be global citizens. The Wisconsin Student Assessment System (WSAS) is a comprehensive statewide program designed to provide information about what students know in core academic areas and whether they can apply what they know. The WSAS includes: • The Wisconsin Forward Exam at grades 3-8 in English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics, at grades 4 and 8 in Science, and 4, 8, and 10 in Social Studies • ACT Aspire at grades 9 & 10

• The ACT Plus Writing at grade 11 for Reading, English, Mathematics, Science, and Writing • ACT WorkKeys at grade 11 Student performance on these assessments is reported in proficiency categories and used for accountability determination at the school, district and state levels. Verona Area Core Knowledge® Charter School Verona Area Core Knowledge® Charter School (CKCS) is excited to begin its 23rd year as a part of the Verona Area School District.

CKCS is a K-8 program that uses the Core Knowledge Sequence for our K-8 curriculum and Direct Instruction to teach reading, mathematics and language to students in grades K-5.

Our students and staff strive to Be Respectful, Be Responsible, Be Rick Kisting, Safe, and Be Kind each day. Last Director school year, our students demonstrated both strong academic progress as well as being positive members of our school community.

This year, we look forward to the celebration of our students’ positive actions as well as their academic excellence through a variety of both in-class and school-wide activities such as all school assemblies, Pro-Awards, and Principal Awards, just to name a few. We also look forward to our tradition of service learning projects that focuses on giving back to others in our community. Last year, CKCS students visited assisted living centers, provided toiletries and food for homeless shelters, raised funds for American Family Children’s Hospital and the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and provided funds for area families in need through the Helping Hands Program (just to name a few services provided by our students).

CKCS is a parent-led charter school and has a long history of strong parent involvement. We encourage all parents to make a meaningful connection to our school, including participation on one of our three parent leadership groups (Governing Council, Parent Round Table, or Parents Advocating for Student Success); volunteering to help at one of our many school events such as Sock Hops, Movie Nights, Art Fair, Science Fair, Book Fair and International Night; or helping in the classroom. Regardless of your schedule or availability, we would like to welcome you to be involved in our K-8 school!

First Day of School Grades K-5 On Tuesday, September 4th, orientation sessions will be held between 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. in CKCS classrooms for elementary students in grade kindergarten thru 5th grade. These sessions will be with their parent or guardian. Each session will last 55 minutes.

Lifetouch Photography will be taking K-5 student photos in the LMC from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Badger Bus Service will NOT be providing transportation on September 4th for the K-5 orientation sessions.

Regular classes for grades K-5 begin on Wednesday, September 5th. School hours for the elementary students are 8:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m.

Grades 6-8 Students entering sixth grade at CKCS and new 7th and 8th grade students should report to the Badger Ridge Middle School/ Core Knowledge® Charter School site on Tuesday, September 4th. Classes begin at 8:30 a.m. and end at 3:33 p.m. for 6th grade students only. New 7th and 8th grade students will start at 8:30 a.m. and be released at 10:30 a.m. Returning 7th and 8th grade students do not have class on September 4th.

Badger Bus Service will be available in the morning and afternoon for 6th graders on September 4th. New 7th and 8th grade students may ride the bus to school and a bus will take them home at 10:30 AM. All students in grades 6, 7, and 8 should report to the Badger Ridge Middle School/Core Knowledge® Charter School site on Wednesday, September 5th for the first day of class for all students.

Savanna Oaks’ first day of school will be Tuesday, September 4th for sixth graders and students new to our school. This day provides our newest scholars with an opportunity to acquaint themselves to Savanna Oaks. Students and parents of 7th and 8th grade students may drop off materials/supplies and organize their lockers. Please refer to 7th and 8th grade team messages for specifics.

The first day of school for all students will be Wednesday, September 5th. All students will begin with their Advisory class.

Students may refer to their schedules for their Advisor and room number. Schedules will be available online in mid-August and a copy will be distributed to each student in Advisory. Advisory classroom assignments for all students will be available as students enter the building.

Please note the time of the middle school day: 8:30 a.m. – 3:33 p.m. Late Starts are NOT every Monday. Please refer to our website calendar for dates. Our building opens for students at 8am, as the front doors will be unlocked and students may gather in the commons and have breakfast if they choose.

Middle school offers a wide variety of opportunities outside the traditional school day such as clubs, activities and athletics. These include: Cross Country (September), Volleyball (September), Wrestling (November-December), Basketball-boys (Nov-Dec), Basketball-girls (Jan-Feb.), Ski Club (January and February) Track (April-May), Drama Club (fall to spring), Forensics (JanFeb), Student Council (all year), All-School Musical (Feb-May), Math Club (Nov-April.) and more as students and staff dream them up! Daily announcements and the SOMS website keep everyone informed as to opportunities and how to join.

Savanna Oaks Website (www.soms.verona.k12.wi.us) A live calendar of school events, which is reliably kept up-todate, is available on the web. Family resources such as announcements, attendance contacts and information about learning activities can be found on the site. Students will find a portal for their grade-level team and this will include information about courses, teachers, events and learning activities. Our library is also an active link and a route to even more learning resources.

Please keep in mind that we communicate with our families using SchoolMessenger and our primary means of communication is electronic. If another route is better for you (paper, texting, phone calls, etc.) please let your student’s Advisory teacher know and we’ll try to accommodate.

Student Absences If your child will be absent from school, we ask parents to call the Attendance Hotline (845-4003) by 9:00 a.m. and leave a message regarding the absence. When your child returns to school, if you have not phoned in, please send a note explaining the

The foundation of assessment at Savanna Oaks is demonstration of mastery of course standards. We will communicate quarterly in a Student Progress Report both Habits of Learning ratings as well as progress in mastering standards. Our progress reports describe standards that were attempted and the degree of success to date on each.

Ways to Get Involved in the School District The Verona Area School District is committed to not only seeking input and ideas from parent and community members, but to also invite you to volunteer for the many great things that are happening our schools every day. We welcome your involvement as we strive to provide the highest quality school experience possible!

Some volunteer positions require a background check for the safety of our students and staff. Your school office will assist you in this process if needed.

Listed below are regularly scheduled events and sev-

eral other ways that parents and community members can get involved with the schools. We welcome you to attend these events and participate in our schools.

• School Board Meetings – Whether you decide to run for a seat on the board or just come as an attendee, board meetings are generally held at 7:00 p.m. on the first and third Monday of each month in the Board Room of the Administration Building, 700 N. Main St. in Verona. These meetings follow a posted agenda and include discussion of important educational issues and events of the

school district. There is an audience portion at the beginning of each meeting that is set aside for residents to provide input to the school board. It is the policy of the school board not to comment on topics raised during the audience portion as many of the topics raised are not posted on the agenda for discussion. These meetings are also televised locally on VCAT and FACT cable access television.

• School Board Committees – In the past, the Board has developed committees to assist Board members in making decisions surrounding topics such as the Strategic Plan, boundary changes, the school calendar, or the district’s transgender plan.

There may also be other ad hoc committees that develop at various times of the year. Current committees are listed on the Board page of the website.

• School Continuous Improvement Teams – These teams exist at every school site in the district as an extension of the governance of the district for the purpose of improving student learning. Each Continuous Improvement Team engages a representative group of the school community to collaboratively listen, learn and share diverse perspectives. Each team meets regularly at a time that works best for the group to conduct their business. Contact the school principal to express interest in joining or to learn more.

• PTA/PTO – These Parent-Teacher groups meet regularly in the district at some of the school sites. These groups typically support fundraising and enrichment opportunities for the school, as well as coordinate adult volunteers, staff appreciation events and communication among parents within the school. Contact the school office for the names of the PTA/PTO officers.

• Classroom Assistance – Parents are always encouraged to contact their child’s classroom teacher(s) to see if there are ways to help in the classroom or assist in other ways at the school. This kind of interaction with students can often be the most rewarding for the parent and student. Parents and community members are welcome to volunteer in the classroom by reading to students or listening to students read, chaperoning field trips, helping with special projects, sharing an area of interest, or simply by being another caring adult to support a child who needs some special attention. Contact the building principal or teacher from the school where you would like to volunteer in the classroom.

• Literacy Volunteers – The Verona Area School District offers a program where caring adults become literacy volunteers to work with students in grades K-3 who struggle with their reading skills. Anyone interested in helping a young student succeed in reading is invited to participate as a volunteer. We welcome any interested community members - parents, retired residents, young adults, service club members - to consider this opportunity.

Volunteers can spend as little as 30 minutes per week. Those interested in volunteering will be invited to participate in a short orientation and training session to learn a few basics of literacy instruction and the requirements of the program.

Early in the fall, volunteers are partnered with an elementary classroom teacher and matched with a student (or two) from that classroom. Community volunteers are greatly appreciated and make the program successful. If you are interested, please contact Gretchen Zimmerman at zimmermg@verona.k12.wi.us as Literacy Volunteer training session dates are always announced in the fall.

• Other school-specific volunteer needs – Each school in the district has various volunteers needs, including committee work, with the desire to have parent or community involvement. These might include: - Library Assistants (sorting or shelving books, laminating projects, etc.)

- Serving on a school-specific committee, with common ones being: - School’s Continuous Improvement Team - PTOs - Task-specific duties that might include: - Book or science fairs - Art shows - School decorating - Math coaching - Reading books to classes - Lunch room assistants - Assisting young students at Natatorium for swim classes - Leading study groups with students - Fundraisers (such as concession stands) - Serving as a guest speaker on career days or other events - Administrative/clerical support in the office (stuffing mailings, answering phones, etc.)

First Day of School The first day of school for all sixth graders is Tuesday, September 4 (Only 7/8 grade students new to the district will have a morning session on September 4). Seventh and eighth graders will begin on Wednesday, September 5. On September 4, sixth graders will have the opportunity to participate in various activities that will help them transition to our school, which will begin at 8:30 a.m. Students should report to their advisory period class at 8:30 a.m.

Classes will finish at the regular ending time of 3:33 p.m.

Back-to-School Night Parents and students are invited to attend Back-to-School Night” on Thursday, August 30 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. The program will allow parents to choose from a variety of experiences to fill a timeframe that meets their family time and informational needs. Detailed information will be mailed home.

School Pictures All students will have their pictures taken during Back-to-School Night on Thursday August 30th. Picture order forms will be available at this time. All students will be issued a school identification card with their picture on it sometime during the second week of school.

Picture retake day will be Monday, September 10.

1:1 iPads All students will be issued personal iPads for the 2018-19 school year to engage in academic work.

Parent informational meetings will be offered for all parents during the opening

You may have seen this information when registering your student(s) for school, but just a reminder if you have a student in 4th-12th grade, you can enroll your student’s iPad in VASD’s iPad damage waiver program (formerly through a company called One2One). To enroll your student’s iPad in our damage waiver program, please visit e-Funds for Schools (Link: https://payments.efundsforschools.com/ v3/districts/55089 ). You can also use e-Funds to pay school fees and deposit money into your student’s lunch account.

Student Absence If your child will be absent from school, we ask parents to make every effort to call the school office (845-4103) by 9:00 a.m. and leave a message regarding the absence. Parents will be called if your child is absent and we have not received a message from you.

Student Assignment Planner and Handbook Students are expected to utilize electronic planners or paper assignment planner. The student handbook is located on the school’s website for review at any time.

Locks and Locker Set-up Incoming sixth graders and new BRMS/ CKMS students will be issued locks from the school on Back-to- School Night. The cost of the lock is $5.00 and will be used all three years at the middle school. Seventh and eighth grade students may purchase replacement locks the first day of school for $5.00. The school building will be open daily in late August for students to set up their lockers. Students may also set up their lockers during Back-to-School Night on August 30.

Extracurricular Activities We encourage students to participate in the extracurricular activities that we offer at the middle school. The Student Handbook and our website lists all of the opportunities that are available. Students will also receive information about these activities through our daily announcements.

Exploration Academy Charter High School

First Day of School Only new Exploration Academy students and Exploration Academy Mentors Pheng Lee, Director should report directly to the K-wing building on September 4 at 8:30 AM. Students will be released at 3:37 PM. All Exploration Academy students will report for a full day of school on September 5. The standard student school day will begin at 8:30 AM. Exploration Academy will dismiss at 3:37 PM. Bus routes are printed in the Verona Press and parents can call Badger Bus at 845-2255. Any special transportation instructions should be put in writing and sent to the school office to the attention of Mr. Pheng Lee.

Registration Registration for Exploration Academy and payment of fees is totally online for your convenience. Student pictures will be taken on Friday, September 7th.

The fee schedule will be as follows: General fee = $35 (includes student planner/handbook); extracurricular fees: club participation fee = $40; parking permits = $50; yearbook = $60. Please refer to the district web page for more specific information regarding fees. Students will also have the option to purchase a $35 pass to attend athletic events all year long.

I recently read a quote that resonated with me, “Intelligence plus character – that is the goal of true education” – Martin Luther King Jr. I realized how frequently I am struck by our students and staff displaying these very traits inside the halls of VAHS. It is with this feeling of gratitude that I welcome you to the 20182019 school year at Verona Area High School.

Although our new high school is still a couple of years away, the plans are in place, ground has been broken and building has begun. Here are some fun facts: 95% of student spaces will have access to natural daylight; 100% of all lights are LED; there will be digital projection capabilities in ALL classrooms; and there will be over 1,300 parking spaces! It’s so exciting to see the vision becoming a reality and to think that this year’s freshman and sophomores will be walking those halls in September 2020. The multi-faceted approach to every step of the planning process has brought with it a strong sense of inclusion of which we feel proud.

Speaking of pride, you may have heard about this proud moment, “Verona Area High School was named one of the top ten BEST HIGH SCHOOLS in Wisconsin, according to U.S. News & World Report.” The ranking identifies schools that best serve all of their students, including historically underserved populations, and assesses the degree to which students are prepared for college-level coursework. Again, I am in awe of the caliber of students and staff at VAHS.

Outside of the classroom, our students continue to demonstrate leadership everyday through sports, jobs, volunteer work, and clubs.

Research has shown that participating in extracurricular activities, clubs and sports increase students’ sense of engagement to their school.

Here at VAHS we offer over 35 clubs and activities. With so much to choose from, there is certain to be an area of interest for you.

Whatever your personal recipe for success calls for, I am confident you can find just the right ingredients at VAHS. And if not, let’s tweak the recipe. Here’s to an amazing year for us all…Welcome!

Employee Complaint Procedure Any employee or applicant for employment who believes that the District or any part of the school organization has in some way violated the District’s equal employment opportunities policy may bring forward a complaint in accordance with this procedure.

This procedure may also be used for filing and responding to other employee-related complaints.

Informal Procedure Any person who believes he/she has a valid basis for a complaint shall attempt to resolve the complaint promptly by discussion with the building principal or his/her immediate supervisor.

The principal or supervisor shall keep a written record of the discussion, provide a copy to the complainant, and reply to the complaint in writing. If this reply is not acceptable to the complainant, he/she may initiate formal procedures according to the steps listed below.

Formal Complaint Procedure Step 1: A written complaint statement shall be prepared by the complainant and signed. It shall be presented to the Director of Human Resources who shall immediately undertake an investigation of the suspected infraction. He/she shall review with the building principal, or other appropriate persons, the facts comprising the alleged discrimination or other complaint. The Director of Human Resources shall decide the merits of the case, determine the action to be taken, if any, and report in writing the findings and the resolution of the case to the complainant.

Step 2: If the complainant is not satisfied with the decision of the Director of Human Resources, he/she may appeal the decision in writing to the Superintendent. The Superintendent shall meet with all parties involved, formulate a conclusion and respond in writing to the complainant.

Step 3: If the complainant is not satisfied with the Superintendent’s decision, or in lieu of utilizing this complaint procedures, the complainant may pursue alternate actions available under state or federal laws (i.e. the State Superintendent of Public Instruction, the Equal Rights Division of the Department of Workforce Development, the U.S. Office for Civil Rights Region V and/or courts having proper jurisdiction).Responses to discrimination complaints shall be made within applicable timelines established by law.

There shall be no retaliation against any employee who in good faith files a complaint under this policy.

Maintenance of Complaint Records Complaint records for the purpose of documenting compliance are kept for each complaint filed and, at a minimum, include: 1. The name and address of the complainant and his/her title or status.

2. The date the complaint was filed.

Annual Notice Of Special Education Referral And Evaluation Procedures Upon request, the Verona Area School District is required to evaluate a child for eligibility for special education services. A request for evaluation is known as a referral. When the district receives a referral, the district will appoint an Individualized Education Program (IEP) team to determine if the child has a disability, and if the child needs special education services. The district locates, identifies, and evaluates all children with disabilities who are enrolled by their parents in private (including religious) schools, elementary schools and secondary schools located in the school district.

A physician, nurse, psychologist, social worker, or administrator of a social agency who reasonably believes a child brought to him or her for services is a child with a disability has a legal duty to refer the child, including a homeless

child, to the school district in which the child resides. Before referring the child, the person making the referral must inform the child’s parent that the referral will be made.

Others, including parents or guardians, who reasonably believe a child is a child with a disability may also refer the child, including a homeless child, to the school district in which the child resides.

Referrals must be in writing and include the reason why the person believes the child is a child with a disability.

It is the policy of the Verona Area School District that no person may be denied admission to any public school in this district or be denied participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be discriminated against in any curricular, extracurricular, pupil services, recreational or other program or activity because of the persons’ sex, color, race, religion, national origin, ancestry, creed, pregnancy, marital or parental status, sexual orientation, gender identity, or physical, mental, emotional or learning disability as required by s.118.13, Wis. Stats., relating to the identification, evaluation, educational placement or the provision of a free appropriate public education of a child with an exceptional educational need shall be resolved through the procedures authorized

by Ch. 115, Subch. V., Wis. Stats.

Complaints under 20 USC s.1231e-3 and 34 CFR ss.76.78076.782, commonly referred to as EDGAR complaints, that the state or a subgrantee is violating a federal statute or regulation that applies to a program shall be referred directly to the state superintendent.

Step 3: If a complainant wishes to appeal a negative determination by the board, he/she has the right to appeal the decision to the state superintendent within 30 days of the board’s decision.

In addition, the complainant may appeal directly to the state superintendent if the board has not provided written acknowledgment within 45 days of receipt of the complaint or made a determination within 90 days of receipt of the written complaint.

Appeals should be addressed to Sate Superintendent, Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, 125 South Webster Street, P.O. Box 7841, Madison, Wisconsin 53707.

Step 4: Discrimination complaints on some of the above bases may also be filed with the federal government at the Office for Civil Rights, U.S. Department of Education, 300 South Wacker Drive, 8th Floor, Chicago, Illinois 60606.

Program Cancellations All classes must have a minimum number of students. The Natatorium reserves the right to cancel, combine, or make schedule revisions as necessary.

Resident/Non-Resident A resident is someone who resides within the Verona Area School District. A Non-Resident is anyone who resides outside the Verona Area School District.

Swim Diapers Swim Diapers (cloth or disposable) are required (by State Law) for all non-toilet-trained individuals.

Groups Groups are welcome to attend Open Swim. Please call in advance so we are aware that you wish to come. Groups over 12 swimmers are asked to rent the pool at a time other than Open Swim. (See next page for rentals)

Adult & Teen Swim Lessons

Youth Lap Swim Swimmers under the age of 18 are welcome to swim laps during open swim. A lap lane will be provided during all open times unless the pool becomes crowded. See Monthly Schedule for detailed times.

Adult Lap Swim Adult Lap Swim is open to anyone 18 years of age or older. Circle swimming is encouraged during peak times. Please refer to the pool schedule for specific lap times. Swimmers under the age of 18 are welcome to swim laps during Open Swim times only. See Monthly Schedule for detailed times.

Open Swim Everyone is welcome to attend open swim. Children, 8 years of age and older may attend Open Swim without an adult. Children under the age of 8 must have a responsible person (15 or older) in the water with them at all times. Floatation devices are not allowed during Open Swim. A lap lane will be provided during Open Swim unless the pool is crowded. See Monthly Schedule for detailed times Family Swim Family Swim is designed as a time for families to swim together. All children must have an adult in the water with them at all times. Families are welcome to bring pool toys with them to family swim. Water wings, floating rings and air mattresses will not be allowed. A lap lane will be provided during Family Swim unless the pool is crowded Pool Rentals & Rates Please make reservations at least two weeks in advance. To make a reservation, call Angie Lucas at 845-4632. The Natatorium rental rates are charged to cover lifeguard and custodial services and facility use costs. The pool will not be rented for fundraising or profit-making ventures.

The Natatorium Director has the sole discretion to approve rentals. Pool Rules must be followed.

The fee is required at the time of arrival. Adult supervision is required for all groups of children.

Masters Swim Program The Master Swim Program is an organized coaching program for Adults. Practice sessions will consist of stroke technique and development of all four racing strokes, starts, and turns. The program will also focus on developing general fitness, endurance and speed.

Anyone looking for any or all of the following should consider the program: general higher level of fitness, competition, triathlon and open water swimming. The program runs Monday and Wednesday evenings from 8-9 PM. Registration will not be taken over the phone, payment must accompany registration to hold spot in class.

SBR Session 1 will focus on developing swimmers’ aerobic fitness, strength and speed in the water. We will incorporate technique work into the workouts through drills and personal stroke feedback from the coaches. This will develop the swimmers’ base for sessions 2 and 3.

This will be a great class for you if you have only spent 10 hours in the pool, or spend 10 hours per week swimming. The goal is for each swimmer to get the most out of any time spent in the pool.

Confidentiality Of Personally Identifiable Information Obtained Through Child Find Activities

The school district maintains several classes of pupil records.

• “Progress records” include grades, courses the child has taken, the child’s attendance record, immunization records, required lead screening records, and records of school extra-curricular activities. Progress records must be maintained for at least five years after the child ceases to be enrolled.

• “”Behavioral records” include such records as psychological tests, personality evaluations, records of conversations, written statements relating specifically to the pupil’s behavior, tests relating specifically to achievement or measurement of ability, physical health records other than immunization and lead screening records, law enforcement officers’ records, and other pupil records that are not “progress records.” Law enforcement officers’ records are maintained separately from other pupil records. Behavioral records may be maintained for no longer than one year after the child graduates or otherwise ceases to be enrolled, unless the parent specifies in writing that the records may be maintained for a longer period of time.

(2m), Wisconsin Statutes. One exception that permits disclosure without consent is disclosures to school officials with legitimate educational interests. A school official is a person employed by the district as an administrator, supervisor, instructor, or support staff member (including health or medical staff and law enforcement unit personnel); a person serving on the school board; a person or company with whom the district has contracted to perform a special task (such as an attorney, auditor, medical consultant, or therapist); or a parent or student serving on an official committee, such as a disciplinary or grievance committee, or assisting another school official in performing his or her tasks. A school official has a legitimate educational interest if the official needs to review an education record in order to fulfill his or her professional responsibility. Upon request, the district discloses education records without consent to officials of another school district in which a student seeks or intends to enroll. Also the district discloses “directory data” without consent, unless the parent notifies the district that it may not be released without prior parental consent.

• The right to file a complaint with the U. S. Department of Education concerning alleged failures by the District to comply with the requirements of FERPA. The name and address of the Office that administers FERPA is: Family Policy Compliance Office, U.S. Department of Education, 400 Maryland Avenue, S.W., Washington, DC 20202-4605.

The school district informs parents when pupil records are no longer needed to provide special education. At the request of the child’s parents, the school district destroys the information that is no longer needed.

• “Directory data” includes the student’s name, address, telephone listing, date and place of birth, major field of study, participation in officially recognized activities and sports, weight and height of members of athletic teams, dates of attendance, photographs, degrees and awards received, and the name of the school most recently previously attended by the student.

• “Pupil physical health records” include basic health information about a pupil, including the pupil’s immunization records, an emergency medical card, a log of first aid and medicine administered to the pupil, an athletic permit card, a record concerning the pupil’s ability to participate in an education program, any required lead screening records, the results of any routine screening test, such as for hearing, vision or scoliosis, and any follow-up to the test, and any other basic health information, as determined by the state superintendent. Any pupil record relating to a pupil’s physical health that is not a pupil physical health record is treated as a patient health care record under sections 146.81 to 146.84, Wisconsin Statutes.

Any pupil record concerning HIV testing is treated as provided under section 252.15, Wisconsin Statutes.

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), and section 118.125, Wisconsin Statutes, afford parents, guardians, and students over 18 years of age (“eligible students”) the following rights with respect to education records: • The right to inspect and review the student’s education records within 45 days of receipt of the request. Parents, guardians, or eligible students should submit to the school principal [or appropriate school official] a written request that identifies the records(s) they wish to inspect. The principal will make arrangements for access and notify the parent, guardian, or eligible student of the time and place where the records may be inspected. The school district will comply with the request without unnecessary delay and before any meeting about an individualized education program, or any due process hearing, and in no case more than 45 days after the request has been made. If any record includes information on more than one child, the parents or guardians of those children have the right to inspect and review only the information about their child or to be informed of that specific information.

Upon request, the school district will give a parent, guardian, or eligible student a copy of the progress records and a copy of the behavioral records. The Verona Area School District is required to locate, identify, and evaluate all children, with disabilities, including children with disabilities attending private schools in the school district, and homeless children. The process of locating, identifying, and evaluating children with disabilities is known as child find. This notice informs parents of the records the school district will develop and maintain as part of its child find activities. This notice also informs parents of their rights regarding any records developed.

The school district gathers personally identifiable information on any child who participates in child find activities. Parents, teachers, and other professionals provide information to the school related to the child’s academic performance, behavior, and health.

This information is used to determine whether the child needs special education services. Personally identifiable information directly related to a child and maintained by the school is a pupil record.

Pupil records include records maintained in any way including, but not limited to, computer storage media, video and audiotape, film, microfilm, and microfiche. Records maintained for personal use by a teacher and not available to others and records available only to persons involved in the psychological treatment of a child are not pupil records.
