2015 resolution? Smokers offered free help to quit Smokers in Filton thinking of quitting this New Year is being offered free support from Smokefree South Gloucestershire. Smokefree South Gloucestershire offer the NHS Stop Smoking Service, now funded by South Gloucestershire Council, which has already helped thousands of people to quit smoking for good. An estimated seven million people will make a New Year’s resolution to improve an aspect of their health and stopping smoking is one of the most common pledges. Free help and support is available to help you succeed with your New Year’s resolution including medications such as nicotine patches and tablets. Smokers are four times more likely to quit with support so anyone interested is urged book on to one of the free Smokefree sessions which run in Filton, Kingswood, Patchway, Staple Hill and Yate. Dr Mark Pietroni, Director of Public Health at South
Gloucestershire Council, said: “We know that no two smokers are the same and individuals have their own reasons for wanting to stop. “That’s why we tailor our service to fit individual needs and lifestyles. And to make life easier we provide free one-toone and group support in lots of convenient locations. “Studies show that you’re up to four times more likely to quit successfully if you use a combination of stop smoking medicine and specialist support from your local Smokefree service. “Thousands of people have already quit for good with our help and if you want to make a healthier start to 2015 then get in touch with us.” To book your place, or for more information about sessions in your community, call us on 01454 865502, email smokefree@southglos.gov.uk or visit www.southglos.gov.uk/ smokefree Advert Page 13

16 new homes to be built as demolition of Newleaze House is set to begin
Demolition is due to start this month as Filton’s Newleaze House is replaced with 16 new homes. Five three-bed homes, four two-bed homes, four one-bed flats and two two-bed flats will be built on the site of the former elderly people’s home. Newleaze House was popular with residents but its design meant access was difficult for those with mobility issues and the rooms were small. All residents were relocated to modern developments, including The Bluebells in Bradley Stoke. Owner Merlin Housing Society has been awarded £2.4m of funding from the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) to build 84 homes in South Gloucestershire over the next
three years. The money is part of the HCA’s Affordable Homes Programme which saw £886m given out to building projects across the country. Merlin is going to use the funding to help finance the redevelopment of nine nontraditional housing sites in Coalpit Heath, Little Stoke and Iron Acton, plus Newleaze House in Filton. Head of Development Michelle Thomas said: “We’re delighted to receive this money from the HCA. We already own these sites and have detailed redevelopment plans in place for them. “We’ve chosen the nontraditional sites as the properties on them are in real need of improvement.
Email: info@lanescarpets.co.uk
“They are suffering from structural defects and have become very expensive to heat for those living there. “The former older people’s housing scheme in Filton has a large number of unpopular bedsits, with narrow corridors and many stairs, which really weren’t ideal for older people or anyone with mobility issues. “We closed the site last year and found residents safer, more suitable homes. “This money will help us replace all these properties with modern, affordable, energy efficient homes.” Now Merlin has been successful with its first bid, it hopes to be able to secure grant funding for other new developments in future.

Sports stars gather in Filton
Commonwealth medallists, Paralympians, British Champions, clubs, coaches and schools gathered at BAWA in Filton last month for the Active South Gloucestershire 2014 Sports Awards. The annual event recognises the achievement, dedication and contribution of local people who are involved in playing, coaching and organising sports across South Gloucestershire. Local residents nominate people who they feel deserve to be acknowledged for their accomplishments, and all of the award winners have demonstrated a strong commitment to ensuring sporting activities are championed at a grass roots level. Cllr Howard Gawler, Chairman of South Gloucestershire Council, said: “The Active South Gloucestershire 2014 Sports Awards ceremony was a really enjoyable occasion for all involved. Well done to everyone who received a nomination. “It was great to see (multiple Commonwealth meadallist from Longwell Green) Claudia Fragapane pick up the Sportsperson of the Year Award after her incredible success over the past 12 months. “This has been an exciting year for sport for Great Britain with Glasgow hosting the Commonwealth Games.” The awards were handed out by BBC Radio Bristol’s Geoff Twentyman. End of an era for Filton Cubs as long-standing leader retires after 22 years The 18th December was the end of an era for the 1st Filton Cub pack as their leader Akela (Wendy Cahill) retired from Scouting after more than 20 years as a Cub leader. Parents, leaders, Cubs and Scouts gathered to wish her well at the end of her final session. The young people presented her with flowers, cards and gifts to mark her 9 years at the Nutfield Grove HQ. Wendy first got involved in Scouting back in 1992 when her son attended a summer camp at Weston. The camp was abandoned due to torrential wind and rain blowing the marquee and most of the tents down. But there was still time, however, for the leaders to persuade Wendy to join the 204th Scout Group. Three years later, she became a fully-fledged Cub Scout Leader. The group moved around a few times before settling into the old Salvation Army church on Filton Avenue. After 10 years at this site, the group closed in 2005 due to the redevelopment of the area. It was at this time that Wendy moved to the 1st Filton group. During her time, the group has had mixed fortunes. In 2008, it was very close to folding as experienced leaders left and the numbers of young people was very low. Since that time, the group has built up in numbers and now has a full pack of 24 Cubs, two Beaver Colonies, a growing Scout section and a waiting list of more young people wanting to join in the fun. Wendy has overseen many camps through the years, often wet and windy like that very first one. Her last camp back in October saw every Cub in the Pack attending and for once weather
Wendy, right, with the current Cub pack at the Nutfield Grove HQ in Filton wasn’t an issue as Wendy had finally discovered indoor camping! There have been many highlights to Wendy’s time as a Cub leader. From driving a fire engine at BAe systems, to County jamborees to a sleepover with over 150 Cubs at @Bristol, life as a Cub leader has certainly not been dull. Wendy said: “Mud is usually a feature of many of the camps I have been on. The most memorable has to have been the Ton of Fun camp in May 2007 to celebrate Scouting’s centenary. I still have the camp T-shirt with mud stains on it. Nothing can get the stains out.” Although she is retiring as leader, Wendy will not be severing ties with the group completely. Her husband, John, is still the overall Group leader as well as leading the Scouts, so no doubt the young people will be seeing her again. Reflecting on her many years in Scouting, Wendy said: “Scouting provides a variety of activities which can fire the imagination and enthusiasm of the young people. In all my years of Scouting I have found that Cubs love nothing better than sitting around an open fire toasting marshmallows, and if I’m perfectly honest – so do I!” With Wendy leaving, the group is now in search of a new leader. The group will continue to run with a mixture of the Group Scout leader, assistant leaders and parent helpers, but anyone interested in volunteering should contact John Cahill on jcahill@ blueyonder.co.uk or 07986 053005. Filton’s MP Jack Lopresti was praised after Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne visited Filton following a pledge of £1m to run the service for a year. The funding will allow the Great Western Air Ambulance service to run its EC135 helicopter. The helicopter, currently based at Filton Airfield, is part of the regional 999 emergency response service. However doubt remains over the future location of he air ambulance after the plans for housing developments and employment on Filton Airfield indicated space may not be available, meaning the helicopter would need a new home. It provides a critical care service to emergences across the counties of Bristol, Bath and North East Somerset, South Gloucestershire, Gloucestershire, North Somerset and parts of Wiltshire. It is the youngest air ambulance in England and Wales so this will secure the charity’s future as it has just upgraded to the EC135 helicopter. The Chancellor met members of the critical care team including two of the original crew members Critical Care Paramedic Pete Sadler and Clinical Support Officer John Wood and seeing the helicopter that the funds will support. Mr Osborne made the funding pledge during the Autumn Statement, when he also unveiled a £5m infrastructure/equipment fund for Air Ambulances across England and Wales, to support purchasing helipads and lifesaving equipment such as defibrillators. The Chancellor

Chancellor visits Filton following £1m pledge for air ambulance further announced VAT refunds to all air ambulance charities, worth £25 million over five years. The funding comes from Libor fines levied on banks. The Chancellor pledged that all the proceeds of these fines would be spent during this parliament on military and blue light good causes. Mr Osborne said: “The Great Western Air Ambulance saves lives across the south west, so I’m delighted to be able to keep their helicopter flying with £1m of additional funding. “This funding comes from Libor fines levied on banks, and it’s only right that funds from those who demonstrated the worst values should go to those, like the brave air ambulance crews, who demonstrate the best of British values on a daily basis. That’s why I’ve earmarked more than £30m of funding for air ambulances across the country.” GWAAC Chief Executive John Christensen said: We were delighted at the Chancellor’s pledge of £1m of funding and that he was able to see first-hand how important this funding is. For the first time since I started GWAAC our future is looking financially secure. This is all down to the effort of Jack Lopresti MP plus other local MPs in the area and of course the fantastic team behind GWAAC.”

This month, we meet Dave Trimby, director of DTR Roofing Tell us about your company. I've been working on roofs since I was 14, helping out during the school holidays, so when I left school, I went on and did a four-year apprenticeship, and received an NVQ Level 2 in roofing at college in Bradley Stoke. After that, I set up DTR Roofing, when I was 18, so I've been running the business for 16 years. I have three people working for me.
Dave Trimby has been running his roofing business for 16 years
I was born locally, and went to Filton High School (a proper Filtonian!) so it's great to work in an area I'm familiar with. I enjoy meeting different people, doing different types of roofs, they're all different – and our customers are always pleased to see us. It's also great being my own boss. What makes your service different from other companies? We use the best materials on the market and I’m always involved in the job – I want to be the person our customers deal with.
What service do you provide to the people of Filton? I provide all aspects of roofing, such as roof conversions, slate roofing, loft conversions, new roofs, old roofs, flat roofs, insurance jobs... anything to do with roofs really. And I use all the best materials on the market, making us the number one roofing service in Filton!
What are your plans for the future of the business? I’d like to expand, but make the business big enough so I can still be in control and be involved in the jobs.
What is the best part of running your business and working in Filton?

Mike bows out of choir on high note
The Filtones Choir has bid a sad farewell to conductor Mike Watson, who retired at Christmas. Mike was presented with a Bristol Blue Glass plate inscribed with a dedication for his loyal service to the choir for 15 years, five as accompanist and the last ten as music director. Just before Christmas, he also made his last presentations of cheques to two of the three charities that the Filtones have been supporting this year. Claremont School’s Starfish Pool Appeal and the Motor Neurone Disease Association each received £450, after Action for ME was presented with £1,000 earlier in the year. During Mike’s ten-year tenure as music director, he has been instrumental in helping the choir to raise £20,000 for various charities and its members hope to continue his good work in

Prior to that I have worked in a range of schools in Wiltshire, Kent, Cambridgeshire and Bristol, as well as Moscow and Cairo! My subject background is Geography. FV: How do you think Abbeywood will compare with a school in Wiltshire? DH: Despite the obvious contrast between the urban and rural settings I think the two schools are very similar in that that have a very cohesive school community which is rightly proud and optimistic about the future, as well as a very strong local community which is fully behind their local school to ensure it delivers the high quality education our children deserve. FV: What attracted you to Abbeywood? The moment I stepped into the school I was struck by the warm and purposeful atmosphere. Abbeywood is a school with a genuine sense of commitment to making sure every student is cared for and where there is a real focus on ensuring each all can succeed. I have a profound belief in making sure every young person has the very best opportunities to become a confident life-long learner and positive citizen.
FV: What are the biggest challenges you will have? DH: It’s always a challenge starting in a new school and initially my biggest challenge will be getting to know the staff, students and parents well. Like all schools, Abbeywood has to continually adapt its curriculum to meet the needs of its students and ensure the quality of teaching is the best it can be this will be my area of focus this year.
FV: What were your first impressions of your new colleagues and the students? DH: The staff at Abbeywood are passionate, energetic and deeply caring and it is clear for any visitor that the strength of the Abbeywood community is build around mutual respect between staff and students. FV: What would you wish to achieve at Abbeywood? DH: To build upon the many strengths of the school as ‘measured’ by every single Abbeywood student fulfilling their potential as happy, confident and responsible young adults. FV: Tell us a bit about yourself … family, interests DH: I live in Bath with my partner Jennie, and two sons Kieran (9) and Daniel (6). I am a big rugby union fan and also a keen skier, hill walker and I love to travel. I have lived and worked abroad and to date have visited 46 countries. Planned trips this year (2015) include skiing in Bulgaria and later in the year a visit to Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam. I am also a keen cook.

January: Use your mobile on your TV Our televisions have long been our window to the world. Now for many our phones do the same through the internet, text messaging and Facebook. But what if you could merge the two? Well, you can. There are several devices on the market at the moment such as Google’s Chromecast and Apple TV, which are wireless, and other cheaper devices you can plug directly into your phone. Chromecast for example plugs into the HDMI slot on
filtonvoice
your TV and then connects to your wireless network in your home. Your phone or tablet can connect directly with it. These devices allow you to show films or TV programmes that you are playing on your phone, on your TV. You can also turn your phone into a small computer by connecting a keyboard and mouse to it. You can install software on your phone to edit text documents, then save it to the cloud, so you can then access it on your home computer. This is adding to the “Internet of Things”, a phrase which describes how many devices, from phones, TVs and computers to fridges and heart monitoring machines, are all connecting together. Part of our job is to help you get the most out of your technology. Make weight loss for life, not just January This new year thousands of people in Bristol will embark on a bid to lose weight and get fit, and a local weight-loss expert is urging them to ditch the fad diets and choose a weight-loss plan they can sustain. Carolyn, who runs Slimming World groups in Horfield and Filton, says faddy diets aren’t the answer: “Lots of people start January with the best of intentions but by the end of the month so many of them have given up, defeated by hunger, boredom or feelings of deprivation. I want people to know that losing weight doesn’t have to be that way, that not all slimming attempts are doomed and not all ‘diets’ are the same. “It’s easy to be wooed by the plans that promise the fastest loss, but it’s really important this new year that slimmers think sensibly about which plan they choose and look at which offer the most chance of long-term success. Diets based on deprivation can be very unhealthy and are almost impossible to keep up, meaning you’re bound to throw in the towel and will probably be left feeling like a failure by February!” Instead, she says, the key is to choose a realistic healthy eating plan and get support to make lifestyle changes. And Carolyn is urging slimmers to choose Slimming World. The
Food Optimising eating plan encourages members to satisfy their appetite on hundreds of healthy “Free Foods”, including fruit and veg, pasta, rice, potatoes, lean meat, fish, eggs, pulses and fat-free dairy, without the need for weighing, counting and measuring. Carolyn says the beauty of Slimming World’s plan is that it addresses the psychological needs of slimmers: “When people think about losing weight they expect to feel hungry and deprived, but since it began in 1969 Slimming World’s plan has always been about helping people to lose weight without feeling like that. Human nature means that the minute something’s forbidden you only want it more, so with Slimming World no foods, even high-fat snacks and alcohol, are banned, they’re just limited. Because you can satisfy your appetite on ‘Free Foods’ you don’t ever have to feel hungry and it’s easier to reduce the amount of unhealthy foods you’re eating so, over time with the right support, this new balanced way of eating becomes second nature.” In fact Carolyn believes getting support is as important as changing eating habits and adds: “Anyone who wants to lose weight this new year will find a warm welcome and world of support at their local Slimming World group.”

Judy: I think that to make things harder for the general public to recycle things - will lead to an increased temptation to fly-tip or to try to put stuff in the black bins. However tightening up on the rules as to what a ‘van’ is could be useful. Introducing a registration scheme would be unenforceable - what if you were to borrow a car from a friend/ neighbour as yours wouldn’t fit the waste in? Bristol and SG are very close together and in the summer we had a flood and my friends (who live just inside the Bristol boundary) helped with the needed rapid disposal of saturated items.
Failure of bin collectors to take extra bags at Christmas
Elizabeth: Oh well let’s see how much fly tipping there will be.

Helen: I could have filled my bin again straight away and still had bags left over. Had to go sit in the one-hour sort-it queue.
Jo: They did say on the bottom of their leaflet that they’ll take an extra recycling bag so should have taken it.
Michelle: It’s hard enough at the best of times when you have a larger family let alone at Christmas and I always recycle whatever I can. Frustrating, especially as this is one of the things our council tax pays for.
Roger: I am very annoyed about this and will be raising it to see if it can be put right by next Christmas.
Pete: They used to allow one extra bag at this time of year because of the delay to collections. Because of recycling they probably don’t think we need it and some may abuse it and just sling it all in one bin.
Jeanne: My black bin emptied today and already full with the left over bags. Samantha: I guess that we will have a shorter collection wait at the end of Jan (only 11 days between 12th & 24th) so hopefully so we won’t have as much to put in our bins then but

still it means it has to be hanging around until then. Helen: Just a thought. As the majority of Filton residents seem to have student houses next door to them, use their flipping bins! We have and so have other neighbours. Claire: What annoyed me was that people who had piled up their bins ridiculously high with extra bags got emptied, but if you followed the rules & ensured your lid was shut & had bags by the side (far easier to handle) it just got left. I saw loads of bins piled high. Will do that the next time.

Is this the future of aviation?
Round One of Airbus’ global competition Fly Your Ideas has attracted worldwide entries on how the next generation will tackle the future challenges of aviation. Over 50 Airbus experts and innovators are now reviewing the more than 500 ideas submitted, such as the one above, including entries from UWE and university of Bristol. Their mission is to select the 100 teams who merit a place in Round Two of the competition.
Filton-based Ian Lane, Airbus Senior Expert and Fly Your Ideas assessor, pictured with his team above right, said: “We passionately debate and review each idea. It is an absolute privilege and inspiration to see such imaginative, unrestrained thinking from the student teams. As aviation professionals, we have insight into which developments are already in the pipeline, so the idea has to be genuinely new. It could be something very simple, used in a
new context or combined with an element in a way we haven’t seen before.” Whether selected for the next round or not, Airbus will give feedback to every team on their submission. The 100 selected teams will be announced this month. Just the top five teams will make it to the final and present their ideas at a live event in June 2015. The winning team will receive a €30,000 prize. A spokesman said: “What sets
Fly Your Ideas apart from other global student competitions is the deep and company-wide engagement of the Airbus teams. “The assessors were drawn from right across the business, and include non-technical professionals as well as engineers and aviation experts. “The multidisciplinary, multicultural teams reflect the way Airbus people work inside the company, and the firm belief that diversity is a driver of innovation.”

Abbeywood Community School
SENIOR E ENTRANSC EXAM 10 & 17 Saturdays January 2015
On Wednesday 17th December, students wore their Christmas jumpers to get into the Christmas Spirit. The Christmas dinner was also on this day. Students wore some fantastic jumpers. Quite a few had decorated up their old jumpers using tinsel and pompoms. Other Christmassy items were worn, including Santa hats and reindeer antlers! Like all dress-down days at Abbeywood, students paid £1 to take part. The money is going to Save the Children. You can see more about this here: www.jumpers.savethechildren.org.uk

It is with very mixed emotions that I write this. It is tough to realise that a 35-year teaching career is closing and that I will be saying goodbye to so many people who I hold in such high regard. I have enjoyed enormously being part of the transformation of this school to one of which students, staff, parents and governors are justifiably proud. I was delighted that Ofsted made specific references to the special atmosphere at our school and the contribution that students make as leaders and learners. There have been so many personal highlights for me and so many special memories that it is hard to remember that I have been here for barely three years. Naturally, I am also excited about the prospect of having more time to enjoy my grandchildren and to travel. Starting as we mean to go on, my husband and I are off to India in January. We have not been on holiday outside of term-time since I was supply teaching when our children were very young. I know that under Dave
Howe’s leadership, Abbeywood will go from strength to strength. The staff here are amazing and are completely focused on helping all our students to the very best outcomes. The Olympus Academy Trust will also be entering exciting new times in January with the addition of Charborough Road and Meadowbrook Primary Schools to our family. Thank you for all your support, encouragement and challenge in my time at Abbeywood.

Orchard School Bristol
Gothic Exhibition at the British Library A group of Year 7 students visited the British Library’s ‘Terror and Wonder’ exhibition, all about Gothic literature, in London. During a workshop session they discovered more about the devices writers used to try and scare their readers, before getting a chance to explore the spooky exhibits in more detail - if they dared! Sports Personality of the Year Awards, pictured Orchard’s talented sports stars were treated to an awards evening with their families. The awards were presented by Scott Turner - a Team GB Sled Hockey player who delivered an inspirational address about how he persevered to achieve sporting success following devastating injuries. The evening was a huge success enjoyed by proud parents of committed and talented young sports men and women.
Interactive talk with Professor Brian Cox Aspiring scientists at Orchard School recently took part in a question and answer session with Professor Brian Cox, which was broadcast live across the internet to schools around the country. Professor Cox answered questions about subjects ranging

from the origin of the Universe to what can be done to try to get more women into science and engineering. Classical Studies Theatre Trip GCSE Classical Studies students travelled to Exeter’s Northcott Theatre to watch Roy Williams’
production of Greek dramatist Sophocles’ famous tragedy ‘Antigone’, which they have been studying recently. The action was transplanted from the ancient world to a contemporary setting, providing us all with valuable new insights into the play’s timeless themes of power, control and love.

How well do you know Filton?
Filton Community Association has come up with this challenging quiz to test all Filtonians In November there was a Filton Activities Community Trail on which there were a variety of activities for people of all ages to try out at a number of different locations around Filton. One such location was the Filton Community Centre, where you could enter a quiz on your general/historical information about Filton. Of the six entries that were returned, the person with the most correct number of answers was Leo Cottle, aged 8, with seven correct answers, narrowly beating Councillor Adam Monk (six correct). A very well done to all who entered what proved to be a very challenging quiz. Perhaps you’d like to have a go?

A Filton shopper has been given something to smile about after being named the winner of a professional teeth whitening treatment. Ian Thomas entered the prize draw at Sainsbury’s East Filton, where the Centre for Dentistry has a practice, and on December 19 he was randomly selected to receive the treatment. Dentists Daniel Woricker and Priya Bahal, who work at the practice, will carry out the painless procedure, which usually costs from £600 but is offered for £399 at the centre or less for those who join their dental plan. Lisa Riley, CEO of Centre for Dentistry, said: “As prizes and offers go, we think you can’t do better than giving someone a beautiful smile for Christmas.” Centre for Dentistry practices are a new addition to selected Sainsbury’s stores and are open evenings and weekends. makes an appearance. At a time when a general election looms and we are told by certain politicians and parties that they just “want our Britain back”, it is sobering to reflect that those qualities deemed essentially British by Paddington and his Aunt Lucy back in Peru – fairness, politeness and hospitality – are those that are most endangered when we turn our backs on those in need. It is the Browns’ small-minded neighbour, Mr Curry, played by Peter Capaldi, who best encapsulates this when he realises the consequences of his prejudice towards Paddington and seeks to make belated amends. I rather think that Paddington would give all of them a good hard stare.

the sticky bear, the kindly Mr Gruber who runs an antique shop on Portobello Road, is a refugee from Hitler’s Germany, and in the film his tragic past is hinted at in a way that is both poignant and subtle. Of course, there have been additions to pad the story out to feature film length, principally the introduction of Millicent Clyde, an evil and fanatical taxidermist played by Nicole Kidman as a cross between her character Mrs Coulter in The Golden Compass and Cruella de Vil. But there’s plenty for traditionalists also, not least the introduction of the famous blue duffle coat, which caused a frisson not dissimilar to the one that runs through a cinema audience whenever James Bond’s Aston Martin first

I wasn’t convinced that I needed to go and see the new CGI-live action Paddington film. I loved the books as a child and have fond memories of the animated shorts by FilmFair. Surely there wasn’t much point going to see a souped-up, sentimental Christmas blockbuster about a decidedly modest and rather sticky bear? Well, yes, there is. Apart from being hugely enjoyable, the story of an illegal immigrant from darkest Peru who arrives in London and is dismayed to discover his welcome is not as warm as he had been led to expect feels very relevant. And this predicament is not confined to Paddington. My favourite character back in the 1960s when I first encountered

Young stars give their first performance A drama group for Filton children which was only formed last year has given its first concert. Rising Stars, which caters for children aged 6-10, delighted a packed house at St Andrew’s Methodist Church Hall with a Christmas concert featuring a play, songs, dance and comedy. The group’s director, Bridget Coulter, said: “We were so proud of all the children - for A number of voluntary, community and social enterprise organisations, including several which serve residents of Filton, have been allocated grants by South Gloucestershire Council. Community groups from across the area were encouraged to apply for three-year grants between 1 May and 31 August 2014. Decisions regarding the allocation of funding were made by the Communities Committee last month. The following organisations received funding: Southern Brooks Community Partnership received £86,250 to lead a partnership delivering work in five priority neighbourhoods in South Gloucestershire (Filton, Cadbury Heath, Kingswood, Patchway and Yate/Dodington). The organisation has service level agreements with Juice, Kingsmeadow Flat, Chase and Kingsforest Community Project, Abbotswood Action and CVS South Gloucestershire to deliver this work. South Gloucestershire CVS were awarded £74,192 towards a project which aims to build a strong voluntary sector in South Gloucestershire. CVS will enable Voluntary Community and Social Enterprise (VCSE) sector organisations to continue to diversify their income streams and draw valuable additional financial resources into the area. The funding will help to cover running costs and also support volunteer centres in Yate, Southern Brooks, Chase & Kings Forest and Thornbury.
some of them this was their first performance in front of a ‘live’ audience. “They worked very hard to produce this show and hopefully this is just the start of even better things for the group. “We will be returning in late January to start getting ready for our summer show and although spaces are limited, interested parents should call on 07889 409012 for more details.”
Community groups to share grant funding pot Age UK were allocated £20,000, which will contribute to the leadership of older people’s services with South Gloucestershire Council and other partners. The funding will maintain and develop strategically relevant services for older people and enable the organisation to secure income for service delivery. Stand Against Racism and Inequality (SARI) Hate Crime were awarded £20,000 for South Gloucestershire Hate Crime Services. It will be delivered by a SARI Project Work team with input from specialist organisations. South Gloucestershire Deaf Association (SGDA) received £20,000. The

association enables deaf people to be involved within the community by helping them to overcome the physical, social, intellectual, emotional and language barriers they face in many aspects of life. They have also built up a resource base of equipment to demonstrate. West of England Rural Network (WERN) were awarded £15,000 towards their work with communities at Parish level to develop community-led (Parish) plans, which research the concerns and aspirations of everyone in the community. South Gloucestershire Disability Equality Network (SGDEN) received £10,000 for their work with disabled people living and working within South
Gloucestershire using the social model of disability as opposed to the medical model of disability. Working in partnership with disabled communities, their families and carers, SGDEN will identify issues faced by disabled people and develop strategies that help tackle them. South Gloucestershire Over 50s Forum were allocated £10,000 to help them become a network, forum and platform for the over fifties in the South Gloucestershire area.
