Recently I had a problem with my double glazed front door. The lock had jammed, and I was unable to open it.

I contacted a local locksmith and was told that it would be impossible to repair the lock, and the only solution would be a new door, costing in the region of £600 – 700, and would take at least a week as the door would have to be made.

Not convinced that this was the only solution, I contacted DGR Windows, as advertised in your magazine.

The gentleman visited the same day and was sure the problem could be fixed. He returned the following day with the necessary parts, and the problem was solved at a cost of £250.

7p a week to support youth clubs

Filton Town Council may consider raising the parish precept after the town’s youth clubs were told that their funding will be slashed in 2013.

South Gloucestershire Council has decided to introduce new funding arrangements which will mean youth services will be allocated money from the ‘Positive Activities Subsidy’.

However spending on centrebased services has been reduced which means Filton will have money for just two sessions a week (costing around £8,000 each), both at St Andrew’s, leaving the Pyramid club without any direct money.

At a meeting of Filton Town Council’s finance committee this month, councillors said there was real concern about services being slashed.

Councillors agreed to look into the possibility of raising

the parish precept (the part of council tax specifically for Filton Town Council budgets) by £16,000 to fund two further nights of youth services.

The meeting heard that with around 4,500 homes in Filton, this amounted to £3.60 per household per year, or 7p per week.

Council chairman Adam Monk said: “We recognise the importance of youth provision and we recognise the need to support them and find a way to help them continue.”

Debbie Teml, who leads the youth provision at St Andrew’s, said staff faced redundancy notices in January ahead of the changes after March.

A spokesperson for South Gloucestershire Council said: “Our proposals for youth services form part of the council’s wider programme of reforms which

seek to refocus our work as a local authority.

“In essence we want to deliver better services by focusing resources on those most in need, and this includes our youth services. Our aim is to work closely with other funders and providers to ensure young people are able to access a wide range of activities in their communities.

“Following consultation, in September councillors approved proposals to allocate a Positive Activities Subsidy to enable greater access to funding for locally-based projects and activities for young people.

‘Knitivity’ created in memory of Christine A group of ex-school staff from St Teresa’s Primary have taken ‘knit one, purl one, drop one, curl one’ to a new level after creating a lifesize ‘Knitivity’ scene, see Page 1, in memory of friend Christine Walsh.

A founding member of the Knutty Knitters, Christine, pictured, died of cancer at St Peter’s Hospice last December and the group are now raising money for the charity which cared for her by taking their creation on tour.

The knitters, made up of Alison Spurrell, Jean Richards, Anne Iles, Eileen Agnew, Pat Dardis and Julia Worth, all worked together along with Christine at St Teresa’s and started knitting together in their spare time.

Before Christine died, it was decided that the ‘Knitivity’ would

be their next project and the group have since decided to carry on and do it in aid of St Peter’s Hospice.

Alison Spurrell said: “The Knutty Knitters began when we made a Royal Wedding themed project and raised a great amount for the school. We enjoyed it so much we decided to make it a regular thing. We have been working on the scene since May and we hope people enjoy it and it would be fantastic to give something back to the charity that did so much for our friend.”

Mrs Walsh died on 20 December 2011 at St Peter’s Hospice in Brentry.

News Flight museum On the even of the closure of Filton Airfield, owners BAE Systems has backed the Bristol Aero Collection Trust in creating the new Bristol Aerospace Centre.

The Company is donating £2 million and will work with the trust to “ensure the long-term conservation and display of an extensive collection of aerospace artefacts and archives.”

This could include a home for Concorde 216 which has been standing on the airfield site for several years now.

The airfield will close on new Year’s Eve after a comprehensive assessment over a five-year period and an independent review; The centre will be located on the northern edge of Filton Airfield, on a site which has been pledged by the landowners, BAE Systems.

The site includes two World

War One, Grade Two listed hangars, which will be fully refurbished to provide a “first class aviation heritage museum, a learning centre and an archive”.

A new building could potentially house Concorde 216 and related exhibitions.

Aero Collection Trust application to the Heritage Lottery Fund to support the creation of the centre. The trust is also in discussions with several major corporate stakeholders with regards to their support for the project.

Project Director of the Bristol Aero Collection Trust, Lloyd Burnell said: “The Bristol Aerospace Centre will bring together Bristol’s important aviation heritage, which is currently in various collections, many inaccessible to the public.

Of the British-built Concordes, only one is now located at its birthplace on Filton Airfield and it’s an exciting prospect that the museum could be able to provide a permanent home for Concorde.

“We are preparing our Heritage Lottery Fund application to be submitted early in the New Year.”

The closure of the airfield

has followed a long battle with local campaigners who say that the area’s aviation heritage is being put at risk and a valuable national asset is being lot.

There are also concerns about the sell-off of the land with fears that the site will become a housing development which lacks the correct infrastructure of roads and facilities.

BAE Systems say there is no business case to keep the airfield open.

Andrew Cheesman, Director, BAE Systems (Aviation Services) Ltd said: “This decision has been taken following a long review of the airfield’s commercial and economic viability.

“We regret the impact that this will have on our 19 employees and we will work with them to explore employment opportunities.

“We recognise the importance of Filton airfield to the local

residential and business community and understand the concerns its closure may have.

“We remain in discussion with South Gloucestershire District Council to agree future plans.”

Labour have said they will not give up their fight against “shortsighted” plans to redevelop the airfield. The party in South Gloucestershire wrote to the government inspector in charge of reviewing the region’s core strategy, slamming his decision to approve turning the worldfamous airfield into a housing estate.

In their response to inspector Paul Crysell’s main draft modifications document, which sums up his comments on local authority’s 15-year planning blueprint, Labour warned of the “irreparable damage” the proposals would cause to the region’s aviation industry.

A new book has been published about the history of Filton Airfield.

He takes us from the manufacture of military aircraft during the First and Second World Wars through the servicing of BOAC airliners during the 1950s and the development of Concorde during the 1960s to the present day and the closure of the airfield by BAE Systems.

25 years of Neighbourhood Watch For a quarter of a century, residents in Filton Park have felt that bit safer in their homes due to the diligence of a dedicated group of people. Wilson Warsop tells the story

I

n the summer of 1987, Alan Tink decided to form a group in his immediate neighbourhood to combat vandalism and burglary, which had become an epidemic in the area.

At the same time, and not knowing each other, Margaret Davies was also putting together a group in Dunkeld Avenue for the same reason. Both were knocking on doors in their own vicinity. When informing the police of their intentions, each gained approval.

However, the police favoured an integrated scheme. This resulted in a well-attended meeting at St Andrew’s Church Hall in July, at which Filton Park Neighbourhood Watch was formally set up.

Alan agreed to be Chairman and the committee started to look at ways to progress.

The result was a huge neighbourhood watch project in the triangle: Gloucester Road North, Southmead Road, Kenmore Crescent and Braemar Avenue & Crescent. It comprised 18 roads and over 650 houses. 50 Coordinators were found.

“It took a lot of doorknocking,” said Chairman Alan Tink at the first AGM. Funds were needed to purchase the street signs required, and social secretary Margaret Davies and her team organised coffee mornings, a barn dance, a boat trip, skittles and bowls evenings, outings and many other events to fill the

A series of newsletters were published for several years, containing such information as how to describe a suspect, how to deal with bogus callers and different ways of increasing home security. Following a drive by police and insurance companies for greater security, the group was awarded from time to time certificates and prizes.

The committee members have, of course, grown older in the past 25 years, but although the fundraising events have ceased, there is still a loyal group of contacts who meet four times a year under the chairmanship of Chris Edwards.

When Filton Park Neighbourhood Watch was first formed, there were as many as three burglaries a night in some roads. Twenty five years later and the situation has improved dramatically.

Some may view Neighbourhood Watch as interfering nosey parkers, but the real truth is that they play a vital role in reducing local crime.

l Police in Filton are promising that anyone caught drink or drug driving will face a miserable Christmas and an extremely unhappy New Year.

Officers are calling on people in Filton call 999 or text the word drunk to 81819 if they see anyone getting behind the wheel while under the influence.

Sergeant Steve Ives said: “Drink and drug driving is totally unacceptable and is a serious crime which puts everyone on the roads at risk. Most people regard it as socially and morally wrong and I’m sure they fully support our year-round campaign to make Filton’s roads safer.” l Filton residents can get rid of their old Christmas trees by taking them to Elm Park for recycling.

Council staff will shred the old trees and use them in the community garden planned for the site behind the tennis courts.

A public meeting will be held on Saturday, January 12th at 10am in the Elm Park Pavilion to discuss the garden.

Organisers want community groups, youth groups and interested residents to come along to find out more.

She said: “The home is currently inundated with lovely healthy dogs and cats that need a home and this will only get worse after Christmas.

“If anyone wishes to donate dog or cat food, towels, blankets or toys this would be an amazing help. There will be a box in the council office for anyone who wishes to contribute. “

Councillor distances herself from Labour branch in row over public questions Filton Town Councillor Mel Drewitt has distanced herself from the local Labour Party branch after a row over public participation in meetings.

As reported last month, councillors voted to end public questions to the finance committee after it was claimed councillors were unable to give precise answers if they had no prior knowledge.

But Cllr Drewitt says the council should be ‘transparent’ and that the system by which residents submit questions seven days in advance is “unworkable”.

Public participation at full council meetings - a 15 minute slot - is not affected.

Cllr Drewitt, right, also said the council was wrong to reverse its decision on charging for use of the boules court.

Cllr Brian Mead, far right, chair of the Filton Labour branch, said Cllr Drewitt would not be able to leave the local branch and still retain Labour credentials.

Cllr Drewitt said: “I support the Labour Party and all that it represents however due to recent events I feel some councillors are not as supportive to the residents that elected us.

“One example is the recent price decrease for the “controversial” boules. This seems unfair and is not in line

with price increases this year for every other leisure facility at Filton. The other issue is residents being unable to participate in finance meetings.

The latest decision to overturn residents asking questions in finance meetings is unworkable.

“It is impossible for them to submit questions seven days in advance of finance meetings when councillors only receive the agenda 5 days before and they are not on the internet until 2-4 days before the meeting for residents to view. Also, not all residents have access to the internet. This is not transparency as we promised.

“I strongly believe that as a elected councillor I am here to represent the public therefore I will be standing as an

independent Labour councillor.”

Cllr Mead said: “The local Labour branch is not a secret society - minutes are distributed among members.

“As I understand it you can’t be ‘independent Labour’ - to leave the local branch you have to either move house or leave the party altogether.

“I believe that if you are elected (under one party banner) then if you stand down you should let people have the chance to re-elect you. However Mel is very welcome to email me to discuss this further.” l Filtonvoice has been told that Cllr Bill Moore, who expressed dissatisfaction with the local branch over claims that he was bullied earlier this year, has now left the Labour party.

State of roads

Further to the letter from L.Vibert ‘State of Roads’, I live on the “Bermuda triangle” which is the far end of Filton Avenue between the A38 and A4174.

Due to the traffic calming humps, I suffer the crash of vehicles as they are driven over these humps using this stretch of road as a shortcut - P.O. vans, emergency vehicles, heavy lorries and even double decker buses (not in service). The 20mph limit is a joke.

Perhaps this could be borne with fortitude if we had a bus service (as there always was) but even this has disappeared.

The recent article printed missed that some councillors were not present at the last meeting, in my case due to ill health which may limit my time at meetings for the next few months.

I agree with Cllr Drewitt’s comments that changing finance to submissions from the public needing to be received in writing 7 days before the meeting is a step backwards and a reduction of transparency.

I raised in the full council meeting that changes should have been made to improve the public submission section at finance which would allow all a fair chance to speak.

I feel a system similar to South Glos would have been fairer where by the public sign a register at the start of the meeting, which for example allows up to 5 people three minutes each on various subjects.

Plane safety

Re the video posted online at www.filtonvoice.co.uk of model aircraft flying on Elm Park, the depth of view from the plane could be quite misleading.

How do you know how close it really was to the people in the video?

Were you there?

The plane was not one of these so called “fast stunt planes” but a powered electric glider with the propeller on the rear.

I agree that large planes, especially fast and heavy petrol ones should not be flown in parks, but is a foam glider really going to be a cause for public safety concern?

I am concerned for my safety in parks sometimes when dogs to not appear to be in control, maybe we should ban dog walkers, and kites while we are at it.

Flying high and in national final

Filton’s Bristol Academy Flyers basketball team has reached the National Cup Final with a 72 to 64 performance over Reading Rockets, who are currently top of the Vcars.co.uk Division 1 table.

The Flyers have reached their 4th consecutive Cup Final and will hope to repeat their 2010 achievement when the Filton side won its first major national title.

with Graham Simmonds of goto iT Windows 8 It is likely you have heard about Windows 8.

But what is it, and do you need it?

What is it?

It is the latest operating (OS) from Microsoft following on from Windows 7, Vista and XP (similar to Apple’s iOS or Linux). The OS is the programme that ‘holds’ the computer together.

Microsoft wanted to design an OS to run on your smartphone, tablet or computer, so that all will look the same. It has been designed for a touch screen (a screen you can use your fingers on) but you can still use a mouse.

It is quite different to previous Windows versions.

The start button has gone and been replaced with the “charm bar” menu. You can still get to a desktop like older Windows versions.

Filton school news

Shield Road Primary At the school we are trying to promote reading across all age groups.

In reading week children and staff dressed up as different book characters, including Harry Potters, Alice in Wonderland and the Gruffalo.

Each class, during literacy lessons, focused on an author.

We also have links with Bristol Rovers community coaches, and they have been in listening to some of the boys read.

Finally there were stories after school, where teachers were reading and telling stories to the children whilst in their pyjamas, and it was a great success.

Friends of Shield Road provided a drink and a biscuit.

Parents were supportive, listening to their children reading and buying books this week at the book fair.

In another project we have worked with Abbeywood Communiyy School. Children at Shield Road school were asked

to design a mural for our library and Abbeywood students used these design to plan out the mural before the grand opening of our refurbished library and mural.

Some comments: “Stories time after school was the best thing ever,” Kieran, Year 5.

“During reading week I loved dressing up as a book character and seeing other peoples costumes,” Natasha, Year 6.

School news Orchard School Bristol Four schools in North Bristol have come together to organise an arts week for all the community - with some events taking place in Filton.

The schools – Orchard School Bristol, Filton Avenue Junior, Filton Avenue Infant and Upper Horfield Primary form the With One Voice Partnership which aims to make the schools at the heart of community life in Horfield, Lockleaze and across the northern fringes of the city.

The arts week – Stimulate Your Senses – will showcase local talent, especially amateur artists, musicians and dancers who might not normally have an outlet for their talents.

There will also be fun learning activities aimed at all the family, including photography, singing and cooking.

At the heart of the week there will be an arts trail at venues across north Bristol and in Filton.

And schools, youth clubs and local groups will also be invited to put their own design on a ‘crop’ of large apple sculptures which will be on display at the arts venues – similar to Bristol’s gorillas.

Now organisers want to hear from individuals, families and groups who want to get involved.

Partnership manager Helen Howard said: “We want to create a fantastic week of activities.

“We also hope that families will sign up for our family learning activities such as cooking and singing. These will be top class sessions, beginning in the new year and led by professionals. Abbeywood Community School Our Christmas Shopping and Pamper Night plus Auction was a great night with lots of stallholders and buyers alike, from whom we’ve had lots of brilliant feedback.

Special thanks to the student ambassadors who helped meet and greet the stallholders.

Some comments: “The pupil helpers were brilliant a credit to the school and their families.”

“The students were eager to help out and all had a kind word to say to the stall holders.”

“It was good to see the pupils participating.”

Some of our Year 10 GCSE catering students stayed late at school for 3 nights to bake and decorate cupcakes and make delicious chocolate truffles. They also then ran the stall for the whole evening and lots of people commented on how great it was to see them supporting the event.

A big thank you to Hannah Buckley for coordinating it and to

the following students for giving up their time: Nathan Badman, Chloe Blythe, Michael Clements, Mason Dadds, Amy-Lou Davey, Ethan Gooding, Elsie Mae Keogh, Billy Radford and Courtney Thomas.

The months of organisation paid off as it was a lovely event and we raised £2,000! Thanks to everyone who helped out in any way, shape or form.

Anti-Bullying Week from 19th23rd November, Mr Clarke and the Social Relationships School Forum Group have led very thought-provoking assemblies and on 22nd November our anti-bullying Y11 ambassadors organised and ran a fundraising concert. We are very proud to see student leadership developing at Abbeywood in such a positive way.

l Congratulations to the whole Abbeywood Community for raising £1080 for Children in Need last Friday. A huge thank you to Miss Tomo and the students of the Community School Forum Group for organising such a wide range of events.

The staff v post 16 students basketball match was a highlight and the break time cake sale was very quickly a sell-out. We were delighted to keep our Finance Team so busy counting the money!

l Final planning and preparations are ongoing for Abbeywood’s conversion to academy status; it will become the second member of the Olympus Academy Trust on 1st January 2013.

There are still some formalities to complete but we are confident that there will be a smooth transfer. We will provide some more detail about changes in the next newsletter but many things will carry on as usual as we need to maintain momentum and ensure that students continue to focus on their learning.

St Teresa’s Primary At their Book at Bedtime event St Teresa’s Catholic Primary School celebrated a love of books as it received the Every Child a Reader Standard.

Following the presentation of the plaque, children, their teddies and their parents enjoyed an evening of stories, cocoa, gingerbread men and even a lullaby.

Every child, parent and teacher benefits from

involvement in the Every Child a Reader (ECaR) initiative.

St Teresa’s has undergone a culture change through the implementation of ECaR, resulting in a much improved reading environment and significantly higher reading levels.

We can’t praise it highly enough. In order to achieve the ECaR standard a range of systems and structures need to be embedded into school practice

Filton Hill Primary The school was approached by Southern Brooks to be involved with a diversity project and it was hosted here last month.

Filton Hill also celebrated Diwali on that day and the diversity celebration carried on in the evening.

The project was managed partly by Faithnetsouthwest, working with relevant staff and parents.

Faithnetsouthwest is the Regional Forum of faith in the south West and has managed similar projects in South Gloucestershire.

Keep Your Christmas Chocolate Out of Reach – It’s Dangerous to Dogs and Cats!

Many pet owners are unaware of the risks to pets from eating chocolate. Chocolate contains an ingredient called Theobromide which dogs and cats cannot metabolise.

This ingredient acts as a poison in their system. If you think your pet has eaten a large amount of chocolate, especially dark chocolate or baking chocolate, you should take your pet straight to the vet.

Early detection and treatment can make a big difference.

News Staff urged to get on their bikes Employers in Filton are giving staff some practical encouragement to cycle to work, in a bid to promote more sustainable forms of commuting.

More than 20 companies along the A4714 ring road – representing over 40,000 staff -have signed up to an innovative scheme which will see emergency cycle repair kits deposited at dozens of workplaces.

The kits include essential cycle maintenance tools as well as spare equipment such as lights, locks and high-vis jackets, and aim to help staff or visitors tackle minor issues that might otherwise be a big problem for cycle commuters.

Employers using the kits include Airbus, HP, Mitie, Friends Life and the Bristol & Bath Science Park, as well as the University of the West

of England and NHS Blood & Transplant.

The scheme is being led

by North Bristol SusCom, a partnership of major local employers committed to sustainable commuting, with support from South Gloucestershire Council via the Local Sustainable Transport Fund.

SusCom Director Ann O’Driscoll said: “We all recognise the importance of sustainable transport, such as cycling, as a way of reducing congestion and promoting healthy lifestyles.”

South Glos Cllr Brian Allinson said: “Many people live within three or five miles of their workplace, making cycling an ideal means of getting to work.”

On Saturday 1st December ,Filton Sports & Leisure Centre hosted a Sponsored Swim in Aid of the ABF Soldiers Charity. The charity gives lifetime support to serving and retired soldiers and their families. They risk so much or us, but to them, it’s just doing their job.

The MOD swimmers arrived on site at 7.30am with five teams comprising of 27 MOD employees to take on the massive challenge of swimming 215km between 8.00am and 6.00pm on a rotation basis, swimming for 20 minutes of every hour, completing as many lengths as possible.

Nineteen of the Leisure Centre staff participated in the event to help the MOD try to achieve their target.

A great effort was made by all, and a big congratulation to Rachael Nicholls for completing 362 lengths & Simon Hewitt for completing 270 lengths.

Painted and new lockers and hair dryers are being fitted in the changing rooms.

Criminals know that our homes can be full of goodies at this time of year.

Putting gifts under the tree before Christmas day could make your home a target, particularly if you can see them from a window.

Hide gifts away until the last minute and close curtains and blinds.

Don’t leave unwanted packaging for days awaiting rubbish collection.

Filton police news

Police take to streets of Filton in ‘Relentless’ pursuit of criminals Police were in action in Filton as part of a sweep of crime across the force area last month.

Officers arrested suspected drug dealers, burglars and thieves as well as people who have tried to dodge justice by failing to turn up at court or to pay fines in a Relentless day of action.

Twenty-eight people were arrested so far across South Gloucestershire as part the Relentless drive to keep people safe.

Across the Avon and Somerset policing area more than 270 people were arrested.

Arrests included: • A man aged 17 from Southmead was arrested on suspicion of indecently assaulting an 18-year-old woman in Filton • • Seven men arrested in connection with recent burglaries across South Gloucestershire, Bristol and Bath. The men, aged 17, 23, two aged 26, two aged 28 and one aged 31, are all from the Nottingham area and remain in police custody • Officers seized 52 suspected cannabis plants and arrested a 38-year-old man in Yate after a search of a house in the town.

• They seized 24 bags of suspected cannabis bush, scales and £90 in a search of a house

in Winterbourne Down, leading to the arrest of a man aged 20 on suspicion of possession with intent to supply controlled drugs.

• A 24-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving on Frenchay Park Road.

• Officers responding to the theft of a push bike in Kingswood recovered the bicycle and arrested a 44-year-old man in Easton within an hour of the theft.

• A 44-year-old man from Warmley was arrested on suspicion of theft and handling offences.

• A 47-year-old woman from Kingswood was arrested on suspicion of starting a fire in a bin in Staple Hill.

Prolific burglars given jail terms Two prolific burglars have been jailed for a total of six-and-ahalf years for a series of crimes including a break-in in Filton, report Avon and Somerset Police.

Ricky Foster, aged 26, who police say has lived at addresses in Filton and Southmead, was handed a three year sentence at Bristol Crown Court on Friday (November 30) after police linked him through forensic evidence to two separate burglaries in Bristol in August and September.

The first took place on August 25, in St George, where Foster smashed a patio door and stole electrical goods and jewellery.

The second burglary took place on September 7, in Montpelier, where Foster forced entry and

stole computer equipment.

Foster, who asked for 15 further burglary and theft offences to be taken into consideration, was one of the faces featured on this website in our most sought after people gallery. This was during our Operation Relentless on burglars, robbers and thieves from September through to November, before being tracked down and arrested by our officers.

Peter Hinder, aged 22, from Lockleaze, was given a three-year sentence at Bristol Crown Court on Friday (November 30) for a burglary on October 13, in Filton.

Hinder asked for a further 18 offences to be taken into consideration.

• Two men, both aged 18, one from Kingswood and one from Severn Beach, have been arrested in connection with the robbery of a 15-year-old boy in Staple Hill last month As well as targeting criminals, police brought police staff out from their back-office roles to help keep people informed about Relentless activities.

They joined neighbourhood PCSOs on high-profile patrols in Yate and Winterbourne Down where officers had been carrying out warrants.

Officeers also patrolled busy areas like Kingswood, Patchway, Filton, Yate Shopping Centre, Downend, Cadbury Heath and the Willowbrook Centre in Bradley Stoke.

Filton Inspector Bob Evely,

who co-ordinated these teams, said: “We have handed out more than 1,500 leaflets explaining what Relentless means and how people can help us keep their communities safe by passing on information about any suspicious activity.

“We have also been talking to people and giving them advice on how to protect their homes and cars.”

Student police officers also joined today’s activity. Officers on their initial training course, supported by tutor officers, came out of the classroom and patrolled the Bristol to Bath cycle path.

Training School Sergeant Dan Forster said: “It was really good for the student officers to get out deal with the public.”

A charity concert at the Bristol Civil Service Sports Club in Filton Avenue - with 70s tribute band FAB 208 - was attended by 102 people and raised £337 for Children In Need.

FAB 208 provided an “unforgettable” night of classic 70s hits.

It followed last year’s event which raised funds for Ronald McDonald House in Bristol.

Cllr Brian Mead of Filton opened the night and coordinated the evening alongside Mr Glen Wintle.

Businesses which donated prizes for the charity raffle included: the FAB 208 band / The Civil Service Club, Giacomo Licata Barber, Terry’s Barber Shop, Jolly Fryer Fish & Chip Shop, Charcoal Grill, Akash, India Restaurant and Real Brazil Restaurant, all on Filton Avenue.

l Grounds staff at Filton Sports and Leisure Centre have been praised after completion of works in-house led to savings of nearly £1,000 for the council.

Staff have been trained in plumbing, and five jobs – which would have cost around £1,065 if the council had used an outside supplier – cost just £125 for materials.

Arts focus with Deborah Harvey ‘The best-laid schemes o’ mice an’ men gang aft agley’ quoth the poet, and so it has proved this month as the show I was planning to write about – a production of Soulfinger and Only The Good Die Young at our own South West Academy of Dramatic Arts - was cancelled on the night I was planning to attend on account of the ferocious weather.

I am instead going to write about an intriguing piece of Bristol history that came to light earlier this month in quite unexpected circumstances.

Every year members of my family gather together in what is, in effect, an annual murmuration, the various tribes that constitute the whole leaving their West Country outposts and converging on Bristol to catch up on family news in a non-funereal context.

This year my cousin Pam, a member of the Swindon branch of the family, arrived clutching

four pages from the bible, from 2 Kings Chapters 10 and 11, which she had come across whilst helping her mother sort through my late uncle’s papers. They are inscribed with the following in copperplate handwriting: This was part of a bible which was plundered from the dwelling houses in Queen Square, Bristol, on the ever memorable Sunday the 30th day of October when the

Which poses all sorts of questions, not least what on earth was a rioter doing looting a bible? Was the bible the then equivalent of a flat-screen TV as far as entertainment was concerned? A friend pointed out that in earlier times, a bible would be high on a looter’s hit list, not simply for its monetary value, but because it was held to have apotropaic values (such as warding off evil).

But the Bristol Riots, to which the inscription infers, happened in 1831, which seems rather late for such beliefs to be prevalent. Since these appear to be the only pages that were taken, it implies that the thief saw a link between the events described in the text and those of the Riot. Chapter 10 of 2 Kings describes how Jehu destroyed the temples of Baal,

a pretty ghastly catalogue of atrocities. Could this text, then, have been used to encourage or justify the riotous behaviour? It wouldn’t be the first time this has happened.

The Bristol Riot was the culmination of a long struggle for democratic rights, and I quite like the idea of some firebrand declaiming to the mob. Some questions remain, however. For instance, how did these pages fall into the god-fearing hands of my greatgrandmother (who then gave them to my uncle?)

She was born far later, in 1870, and both she and my great-grandfather were from North Somerset labouring stock.

Second, will staff at M Shed, whither the pages are bound, display them or keep them in a cupboard somewhere? And most pressingly of all, where’s the d from the end of infuriate?

Green petition for MP Jack

A petition has been delivered to the office of Filton MP Jack Lopresti on behalf of South Gloucestershire branch of the Global Climate Campaign.

It was handed in by Filton resident Diana Warner together with Rudgeway resident Simon Cannell.

Mr Lopresti was unable to receive the petition in person as he was abroad.

The petition was designed and organised by the South Gloucestershire group as part of the Global Day of Action on Climate Change.

It was signed by over seven hundred constituents of South Gloucestershire as a personal message, particularly for Mr Lopresti and Steve Webb, the South Gloucestershire MPs. It has also been endorsed by twelve local groups: CAFOD; Thornbury Churches Together; Christian Aid; Friends of The Earth; Greenpeace; Sustainable

Thornbury; Thornbury Make Poverty History Group; “Be The Change” Thornbury; Grandparents for a Safe Earth; Thornbury & Yate Green Party; Filton & Bradley Stoke Green Party; and PCS (Public & Commercial Services Union) It reads: “We, as individuals and members of a number of organisations in South Gloucestershire, are united in our great concern about the catastrophic effects of climate change on our earth.

“We therefore demand of our

elected representatives that they put pressure on global leaders to take the urgent and resolute action required to prevent the destabilisation of global climate, by urgently establishing internationally co-ordinated action for a stronger emissions reductions treaty which is both equitable and effective in minimising climate change.

“At the same time our elected representatives must do all they can to foster initiatives in South Gloucestershire which reduce greenhouse gas emissions.”

Library service seeking volunteers South Gloucestershire Library Service is looking for friendly volunteers in Filton to deliver library books to older readers living in care homes and sheltered housing.

Volunteers will help older people continue their love of books and offer them the stimulation of reading.

When a library user or other book lover moves to sheltered housing or a care home they may no longer be able to get hold of books.

When this is the case the Library Service will provide a free books-on-wheels service.

The delivery of the books will be undertaken by a new team of volunteers, and it is this team for which they are recruiting now.

Filton bowlers bring the year to an end with annual dinner Members of the BAWA Bowls Club enjoyed a slap-up dinner at Filton Golf Club.

Players and guests gathered for their annual prizegiving after another successful season on the green. A highlight came in September when the club hosted the Bristol Bowling Association semi-finals.

At the club AGM last month, there were several changes among the officer bearers.

The new team includes: President/Treasurer, Don Thorne; Chairman, Brian Smith; Secretary, John Woodgate; Club Captain, Kevin Griffiths; Vice Captain, Keith Brown; Match Secretary, Alan Ward; and Competition Secretary, Colin Lawday.

Great start to the year for St Vallier News from St Vallier AFC youth development squads with Ian Jones After a great summer the friendly season got underway and at under 8 level the games are played on a non competitive and friendly basis against other teams in the Bristol and surrounding areas To date the under 8 squad (school year 3) have played 9 games. They have won 3, drew 3, lost 3, scoring 55 goals and conceding 55 goals.

Opposition have included Mangotsfield, Bradley Stoke, Warmley, Stoke Lane, Almondsbury, Thornbury, Winterbourne and DRG Stapleton Oli Jenkins has scored 15 goals, George Brown 11, and Harrison Bailey, 8.

The under 8 squad are proudly sponsored by local Filton company H&P AERIALS and St Vallier and all the children would like to thank them for their continued support Playing up a year from the U7 Squad (school year 2), several players have represented the under 8 squad as part of their development.

They are Mitchell Bullock, Jayden Jones, Regan Walker, Jacob Price, Leighton Farr, Yiannis Lornvardos and Thomas Thorne.

St Vallier, who are based at Elm Park, are Filton’s original youth team and now proudly have teams playing in the Avon Youth Leagues at U15 and U12s with the U11s, U10s and the U9s playing in the Hanham Minor League. All teams have got off to a good start to the season with a special mention to the U11s who currently top their league!

St Vallier were also sad to lose long standing commitee member and original founder of the club Mr Frank Baker who sadly passed away in October.

MP’s half marathon pledge for Filton-based air ambulance Filton and Bradley Stoke MP Jack Lopresti visited Filton airfield to find out more about the work of the Great Western Air Ambulance Charity (GWAAC).

During his visit to the base, Mr Lopresti was given a tour and spoke to pilot John Rigby about the charity’s “Movin’ on Up” campaign, which is aiming to raise £250,000 for a new helicopter.

The charity’s currently helicopter, a Bolkow 105, is struggling to meet the demands of modern air medicine and by upgrading to a Eurocopter EC135 model, the air ambulance would be able to attend to patients four minutes faster as well as allowing a relative to accompany them to hospital.

In addition, the charity is also pleased to announce that Mr Lopresti has signed up to run the 2013 Bath Half Marathon, taking place on Sunday 3rd March 2013, in aid of them.

Speaking of his visit to the base, Mr Lopresti said: “I was very pleased to be invited to visit the Great Western Air Ambulance Charity.

“It is quite amazing to hear that such vital work in saving lives is financed to a very great extent by donations from the general public. The cost of leasing and running the helicopter, the pilot and hangar provision is met by fundraising.

“The highly experienced consultant doctors on board every flight are all volunteers.

GWAAC receives some NHS backing for items such as emergency monitoring equipment and the paramedics are NHS funded.

“It is reassuring to know that

BAE have confirmed GWAAC will have alternative on site accommodation when Filton Airfield is redeveloped. This has prevented a move away from Filton and the Bristol motorway network and will save valuable time and resources in responding to over 600 helicopter callouts a year.”

John Christensen, Chief Executive of GWAAC, met Mr Lopresti during his visit and said: “We were delighted to welcome Mr Lopresti to the Filton base, and share the work that we do as a charity with him.

“We are also thrilled that Mr Lopresti and his team have signed up to run the Bath Half Marathon next year in aid of us.

The money that is raised will really go some way in helping us to achieve our aims of upgrading to a new helicopter which will benefit the 2.1m people in our region. ”

Plea to support Filton coffee morning Organisers of Filton’s Unity Coffee Mornings are seeking support from the community.

The group - which consists of women from different cultures - meets weekly at the Pyramid Youth Centre on Filton Avenue.

Katie Donovan of Southern Brooks said: “Unity aim to keep this coffee morning running

until February but if numbers do not increase this very valuable resource may cease to exist. Their objectives are to break down barriers and raise the profile of equality and diversity.”

Mo-mentous day for Airbus charity stalwarts

More than 100 Airbus employees put their razors aside as they took part in the annual Movember challenge raising an excess £2,500 for charity Prostate Cancer UK. Employees at the Filton site celebrated their month of fundraising during a ‘Mo Judging’ session and an awards ceremony recognising the Best Moustache, Best Fundraiser and Best Team Fundraiser.

The Movember challenge is just one of the many activities employees are encouraged to get involved with through the Airbus Charity Challenge initiative. The programme is designed to support employees and help provide them with the opportunity to get involved in fundraising projects.

Since its inception in 2003 Prostate Cancer UK has been the main beneficiary of Movember and during 2011 more than £22 million was raised in the UK. Fundraising programmes such as this provide significant contributions to the research initiatives and have supported men during treatment of this cancer.

Sean Kerr, proud moustache grower and winner of the Best Moustache category, said: “I loved being part of Movember, helping to raise awareness of prostate and testicular cancer.

“Although my family don’t love my moustache they have been really supportive and have given me some great ideas on styles,” Julie Showering, Filton Charity Challenge Coordinator, said: “ ‘Is incredible to see so many people working together to raise money for this wonderful charity.”

Regional pay fears for health service Councillors in South Gloucestershire have voted to urge the local NHS to reject the introduction of regional pay.

South Gloucestershire’s Public Health and Health Scrutiny Committee hosted a debate on the issue of regional pay, which the NHS may still considering trialling first in the South West region.

Professional bodies have spoken of their concerns that the plan would impede career development and encourage the migration of key skills to other parts of the country.

NHS bosses told the meeting no decisions had yet been made.

Labour committee chair Councillor Ian Scott (Filton) said: “The clear danger for patients with this plan is that the best NHS staff will migrate to other areas, some of which are close by, that continue to pay national rates.”

My name is Julie Smurthwaite and and I have run Flower in Bloom for six years although I have been in the floristry business for about 15 years.

I was a manager in a delicatessen and in retail as well as being a full-time mum.

What persuaded you to run your own business?

With my children growing up, i decided to take floristry courses and that led to my current situation.

Books for our little treasures

Children from Filton Park Preschool visited Filton Library for a special rhymetime and story time session on Monday 19th November 2012 to receive their Bookstart Treasure Pack.

South Gloucestershire libraries give the packs to all children who will be starting school in September 2013 through their nursery or pre school and last year libraries distributed over 3,000 packs in South Gloucestershire.

The Bookstart Treasure Packs contain everything needed for a family to get started in sharing stories, rhymes and songs.

Bookstart is a national charity which aims to help every child develop a lifelong love of books

by the gifting of the Bookstart Treasure Pack and the Bookstart Baby Pack in a child’s first year.

South Gloucestershire libraries offer free story time and rhyme time sessions each week for children up to the age of four and all pre school children can join the Bookstart Bear club at their library.

Landmark has seen much change

This month, Jackie Sims of Filton Community History takes a look at Old Filton House, currently at the centre of Airbus’s plans for a new complex at the gateway to Filton About 1719 it is probable that the landlord of Filton House, when his tenant moved on, built a fine new house on the Filton House site. Poor Rate was based on the acreage of a property. In1732 -3 Filton House paid the highest in Filton Parish, indicating the land held by Filton House was the largest in the Parish.

It was advertised in Felix Farleys Journal in 1773 as an exceedingly good farmhouse with 196 acres of arable, meadow and pasture land and convenient barns, stables and outhouses.

The Estate was bought by John Fowler of Coate in Westbury on Trym, let on lease for 15 years to William How. On the expiration of this lease Robert Willoughby, a member of a well known Bristol merchant family became tenant of Filton House. John Fowler died in 1790, leaving his Filton House Estate to his son James.

In 1815 George Copeland was renting Filton House and the large field, Home Ground which stretched from Homestead Road to Golf Course lane.

Fowlers copy of the Parochial Map of 1825 is signed James Fowler, Filton House, Filton suggesting he was living there.

James’s younger son HR was curate at Filton Church in 1822.

On the death of his father, HR inherited Filton House.

Various people rented the land with various other people renting the House. HR Fowler died in Brighton in 1878, leaving his property to his daughter with provision for it to be sold together or parcelled up and sold separately. That’s another story.

Mrs Pritchard rented Filton House from 1861 until her death in 1884.

Samuel Shield bought the house in 1884, along with about 5 acres of land. Initially he rented Filton House to Reuben Evans.

When the Evans family moved to Redland in 1891, Edwin Shellard became Samuel Shields tenant.

Mr Shield sold Filton House and the land adjacent to it on the 25th April 1912 and Filton House became the Headquarters of the British and Colonial Aeroplane Company until 1936 when the

adjacent New Filton House was opened.

Old Filton House and the 1936 New Filton House (now called Pegasus House) became surplus to British Aerospace requirements in the 1990s and was threatened with demolition.

Northavon District Council made several attempts to have the building listed. Finally, with the support of Friends of Filton House, they were successful in 1999.

Filton Community History were lucky enough to visit the site in October when work had just started on the grounds.

Airbus are in the process of building the new building we see growing every day and carrying out refurbishment of Pegasus House and Old Filton House.

The extension on the south side of Old Filton House, built about 1914, has been demolished, along with the single storey on the south side, not thought to be part of the original 1719 building.

Work is going on to restore both houses and the grounds.

‘CRUESCO’! The garden that says ‘Welcome!’ on entry, and keeps saying it ... all the way round!

On a trip with Filton Garden Club, Doug Daniels finds a Welsh wonder which has something in common with the Eden Project The “Filton Garden Club” has earned itself an enviable reputation for choosing intensely interesting locations to visit where the ‘glory of the gardens’ can be readily observed.

Their Autumn visit – painstakingly put together by Brian and Pat Smith and their team – centred on the “National Botanic Garden of Wales” at Llanarthne, Carmarthenshire in the Towy Valley. It was certainly one of the best.

The one-time residence of Sir William Paxton (1789), it was sadly completely destroyed by fire in 1931 with only the walls standing.

On a grandiose scale it features the world’s largest single-span glasshouse containing plants and shrubs that could only survive in a controlled atmosphere. It provided what they were used to in their Mediterranean habitat. Designed

by Sir Norman Foster, it is an astonishing structure heated with a bio-mass system similar in some ways to Cornwall’s “Eden Project.”

At first sight the magnitude of the garden is breathtaking, ... covering 568 acres. Opened on July 21st 2000 by the Prince of Wales it suffered financially at

first. It was later rescued by the Welsh Assembly Government, followed by the Millennium Commission securing its future.

It is now a registered charity concentrating on horticultural research.

The gardens give an impression of planned excellence with prim archways, wide paths and flower beds etc. Yet later they lead into secluded walkways, quite retreats and fish-filled lakes. One lake describes itself as providing “25,000 household baths” or sufficient to “boil 10 million potatoes.”

Sports bookings ‘taking up to an hour’ Councillors have expressed their frustration over the booking system at Filton Sports and Leisure Centre which are taking an average of nearly 10 minutes to complete.

Leisure Centre manager Lisa Timbrell said that there had been examples of booking taking an hour to process.

In some cases, the computer system is so slow that staff have been forced to write down customer details and complete the booking later.

Councillors heard that the system is, in fact, three systems –

for the tills, the overall IT and the bookings software – provided by three different companies.

Ms Timbrell said: “This is affecting customer service.

“On occasions the system locks staff out and this is affecting income.”

Council chairman Adam Monk said: “We need to get the three suppliers together and we need to be forceful.”

Cllr Anne Kenyon asked if it was possible to have one company provide the entire service but Cllr Kieran Hyde said that would be costly.

A cracking performance by Filton students

A group of Performing Arts students from South Gloucestershire and Stroud College in Filton took to the stage to perform a beautiful contemporary adaptation of the Nutcracker ballet.

Held at the Olympus Theatre located on the WISE Campus in Stoke Gifford, the performance was an original version of the well-known narrative.

The class of 25 students had been researching the historical developments of the show since the start of the academic year and were delighted to see their hard work pay off in the faces of their audience. The project

provided a creative insight to the art form of ballet and contemporary dance, and the rigorous training involved in becoming a professional dancer.

Students had the opportunity to develop their own professional practice, and with more dance companies making full length performances and having a requirement to be on stage throughout, this proved valuable to all involved.

Level 3 Tutor, Danny Burnham said: “The dancers worked professionally and the results have demonstrated this.

I look forward to seeing them all develop.”

Keep a lookout for tree disease signs

South Gloucestershire Council is urging Filton residents to report sightings of a fungal disease killing local Ash trees, in order to prevent it spreading further.

Ash die back originated in Europe and has spread into the UK, including parts of South Gloucestershire.

Symptoms of the disease include leaf death, with dead leaves typically hanging on the tree. This is followed by death of the tree’s branches.

Council officers are urging members of the public to report suspected sightings of the disease, to help monitor the spread of the disease.

Residents are also being advised to make sure that leaves from affected trees are burnt on site, to destroy spores that spread the disease.

Detailed advice on identifying cases of Ash die back is provided at www.southglos.gov.uk/ ashdieback Trees on private land are the responsibility of the landowner, and the council website includes advice on choosing a tree surgeon for people who may need to deal with affected trees.

Environmental services manager Jonathan Munslow said: “South Gloucestershire has many Ash trees and it’s vital that we monitor and deal with the disease where it occurs.

“It’s important to remember that Ash trees are among the latest to leaf in the Spring, so people should look carefully for tell-tale signs of the disease.”

Chilblains As the weather has become colder I have seen several children in surgery with red and very itchy toes. In the days before central heating when children walked to school in all weathers everyone knew about chilblains. Now they are less commonly recognized.

Chilblains are caused by constriction of blood vessels in the fingers or toes causing damage to the tissue. They are most common in young women but anyone can get them.

Acute chilblains occur 12 to 24 hours after exposure to cold and can last for two weeks. Rarely people get chronic scarring lesions from repeated chilblains.

Treatment is firstly to try to keep the feet warm and avoid further exposure to the

cold. So lots of thick socks and warm shoes or Ugg boots.

There is no satisfactory treatment for acute chilblains, you just have to wait for the damaged tissue to heal. If you keep getting chilblains you should see your doctor as they are occasionally associated with other more serious conditions.

We give afternoon concerts to organisations, such as pensioners’ clubs, all over Bristol, and at

least two main evening concerts every year, one of which is in summer (our main charity fund raising event) and at Christmas.

We have sufficient sopranos at present but are actively seeking tenors, basses and ladies who can sing alto.
