‘Serial’ vandal attacks Filton butcher’s shop

Millhouse Butcher on Gloucester Road North, Filton, has been targeted twice by a hooded vandal who has been attacking butcher’s shops across Bristol.

Five other butcher’s have had bricks hurled through their windows, in a total of 11 attacks in the past two months.

Adrian Cunliffe, director of Millhouse Butcher’s, pictured above, said: “There has to be a motive so maybe it is animal rights activists or someone with something against butchers.”

A police spokeswoman said officers were keen to speak to a white man aged 20-30, of medium build and wearing jogging bottoms and a grey hooded top.

Elm Park - we’ve been MP hosts wounded services personnel as ignored, says group Honouring the brave Filton Town Council has persistently ignored suggestions made by Elm Park Working Group, its former secretary has claimed.

The council has insisted it is committed to preserving the space for the community but wants to ensure the right decision is made.

The working group was set up eight months ago to come up with ideas to enhance the area as well as to ensure it is protected from development in the future.

Mr Mikkleson, who resigned recently, said: “Council paid little or no regard to suggestions made by the group. I believe the council were using the group to try appease and suppress residents’ issues, instead of acting on them.”

Suggestions range from Town Green status to the QE2 Jubilee fields challenge, which will see 2012 spaces protected by order of the Queen next year.

A survey carried out by the group at the Filton festival in July found that 99% of people would like to see the fields protected for generations to come. In 2001 a protection order, called a covenant, was already placed on another Council space, the Millenium Green in Northville Road.

Town council chairman Adam Monk said: “It is a shame Mr Mikkelson decided to resign as his contribution was very welcome. It is disappointing people are frustrated with the timescale however it is essential the correct decision is made, We are committed to ensuring Elm Park remains as a space for all.”

On the eve of Remembrance Day, Filton and Bradley Stoke MP Jack Lopresti hosted wounded service personnel in the Houses of Parliament as part of a visiting programme for former servicemen who are in rehabilitation.

Mr Lopresti met with Cpl Jared Kreiser and Cpl Chase Martin of the United States Marine Corp along with Private Arron Garage of the Royal Anglian Regiment. The visit was organised by Matt Crouche GC, a Royal Marine who is ambassador for the Royal British Legion, who are celebrating their 90th Anniversary this year. Matt was awarded the George Cross by Queen Elizabeth II at a ceremony in Buckingham Palace on 30 October 2008.

The other former servicemen, Jared, Chase and Arron sustained life changing injuries during their periods of service in the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts.

Mr Lopresti said: “It was an honour to meet the guys and give them a tour of Parliament.

“The way in which these brave young men have fought back against they’re horrific wounds is incredible.

“Between them they’ve had well over 75 separate surgeries and I was especially interested to hear about the ground breaking depth therapy that has really helped the guys in they’re rehabilitation.”

Mr Lopresti attended a Remembrance Service at MOD Abbeywood on Friday 11th November as well as collecting for the Stoke Gifford Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal over the Remembrance weekend.

College merger in 2012

The proposed merger between Filton College and Stroud College has been given the go ahead

by John Hayes MP, Secretary of State for Further Education, Skills and Lifelong Learning.

From 1 February 2012, the legal name of the new merged organisation will be South Gloucestershire and Stroud College.

Probus club appeal

Bristol Cabot Probus Club has vacancies for new members.

The club, which meets on the third Wednesday of each month at the BAWA Club on Southmead Road, provides a meeting place for retired and semi-retired professional and businessmen.

This allows them to maintain contact and fellowship with others of similar interests.

At their meetings, there is a lunch followed by speakers on a range of interesting subjects.

They also hold social events, day trips and other events to which ladies and friends are welcome.

Filton young people praised at gala night The achievements of more than 200 young people were celebrated at an event organised

by South Gloucestershire Council to coincide with National Youth Work Week this month.

Among the groups recognised at the BAWA event was St Andrews Methodist Youth centre in Filton, led by Debbie Teml.

The Filton young people delighted the audience with their fun and thought-provoking puppet show, pictured above.

All the young people from across South Gloucestershire were presented with a certificate recognising the contribution they make to the communities they live in.

Post Office ‘NOT closing’

The Post Office in Filton, opposite St Peter’s Church in Church Road, is NOT closing, contrary to rumours.

The business is up for sale but filtonvoice has been told the new owners will be running it as a Post Office.

A sign on the Post Office window says ‘This Post Office is definitely not closing’.

It is understood there had been rumours locally that the business was closing down but staff have been reassuring customers that this is not the case.

Adult book Kissing Mr Wrong, by Sarah Duncan Sarah Duncan’s books always guarantee a good read and Kissing Mr Wrong is no exception.

There is a whole cast of well crafted and intriguing characters and there is a genuine insight into their motives and emotions.

Although a search for love is at the heart of the story it has so much more that I wouldn’t describe it as romance. It has humour, history and travel to new locations.

I absolutely loved this book! I took great pleasure in imagining Lu going about her life in Bath - this really brought the book to life for me. I felt I could relate to Lu like a friend and was able to empathise with her emotional journey from Mr Right to Mr Wrong and back to Mr Right. I laughed and I cried with her and loved the multiple strands of storyline, from history to travel to family relations, and how they weaved together to create more layers as the story developed.

An enjoyable and engrossing read!

Books of the month with the staff from Filton Library Children’s book Little Bear and the Wishing Tree, by Norbert Landa Bertie Bear is cross. He does not want to share his toy car with his little brother so he runs out of the house and spends the night in the branches of his favourite tree.

Is the tree magic? When he is hungry pancakes appear, when he is scared of the dark he sees a lantern hanging from the tree, and when he is cold he finds a blanket on the branches to keep him warm.

This is a charming story, beautifully illustrated, with important lessons on sharing. It will appeal to parents and pre-schoolers alike.

It’s not just books in Filton Library October’s “Active Mind Month” gave Filton people the chance to discover there’s a lot more to their local library than just books. South Gloucestershire Libraries produced a colourful booklet featuring lots of activities for their visitors to enjoy.

These included craft sessions, tips on how to take better photos, and organised outings to discover owls, bats, fungi and old industrial sites. Filton Library devoted one morning to poetry, with Sarah-Jane Arbury showing people that they too could write poetry about the place in which they live. Other libraries hosted author events, and even a murder mystery evening.

Due to my husband’s longterm illness, I have only sampled a few of these happenings, but both of us have enjoyed the

experience. With Sarah-Jane’s help, Geoff and I both offered poems to the “Magic Chest.”

These joined the display of postcard poems in Filton Library.

All ages from 7 to 77 took part in this fun project. Much fun was also had on the quiz evening, on the 18th October. I joined my reading group friends to make up one of the five teams that took part. Despite playing our “joker” on the literary round, we only finished in third place. Our real reward was the pleasure we all had in just taking part.

I’d like to thank all the people who made this series of events possible. It has helped to bring people together, and I am sure it has widened a few personal horizons in the process.

New head working his magic already

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: Following the sudden resignation of the head teacher, Abbeywood Community School has turned to a man who will now run not one but two secondary schools.

Richard Coulter meets him

W

ith his bow tie and commanding presence, you feel Dave Baker would not be out of place on the stage delivering conjuring tricks.

Yet that is exactly what he appears to be doing, just a month after taking over as executive head teacher at Abbeywood Community School following the sudden resignation of Ann Duff.

Mr Baker, 48, is now the head of not one but two secondary schools as he remains at the helm of Bradley Stoke School, where his tenure has been highly successful with an ‘outstanding’ Ofsted report in 2009.

He will now bring his magic to Abbeywood which last year was given a ‘notice to improve’ by Ofsted inspectors.

“The trick is the illusion of omnipresence,” he said, referring to the challenge of appearing to be in two places at once.

“The first weeks have been challenging to say the least, dealing with two sets of staff, two sets of governors, two sets of meetings and two email accounts.

“I have had to cut through a lot of the administration.”

On the resignation of Miss Duff, who left to look after her parents following illness, he said he ‘was as surprised as anyone’.

“I worked closely with Ann as part of the Concorde partnership in which our students have shared courses.

“We were already working

with Abbeywood to help in some aspects so, as an accredited ‘local leader of education’, I was asked to step in, with the approval of both sets of governors.”

Mr Baker appears to have stamped his mark on the 810 students at Abbeywood already.

The feeling is that his immediate challenge is to provide an atmosphere in which each one of those youngsters will do even better than the current expectation.

He said he has had to delegate much of his work to others, admitting this would difficult for any head.

“All heads are control freaks.

For example, at Bradley Stoke I taught every Year 7 child once a fortnight and it has been really hard for me to let that go.”

For students and families at Abbeywood, change - for the better - seems likely.

“The main thing is that I am really clear on boundaries and I think the staff appreciate that they know what can and cannot be done in the class with relation to things like mobile phones.

The subjects being taught were diverse including Philosophy, Classics, Chemistry, Biology, Computer Science and Anthropology.

During the day the students were based at Exeter College but also visited Brasenose, St Peter’s and Lincoln College.

This follow-up inspection would have taken place with or without a head teacher.

Mr Baker said that once the Ofsted inspectors have been and gone, a review would take place to move the school forward and parents would be invited in to the school to find out what his plans are.

He said that it was entirely possible that this arrangement, in which he is head of two schools and which is officially in place until next summer, could continue beyond that time.

For a man with two major jobs on his hands, he seems relaxed but not wasteful of time.

Our interview lasted barely half an hour but topic after topic was covered comprehensively.

This is clearly a man in a hurry, but not one who will rush things.

He said he doesn’t sleep much and uses his daily 6.30am swim as his chance to think.

I was left with an image of hundreds of students, struggling to get out of bed each day, their futures being mapped out by an imposing figure ploughing up and down the lanes of a Westbury-on-Trym swimming pool.

Life seems unlikely to be the same at Abbeywood Community School.

Arnolfini Poetry Competition Two students from Journalism Club, Imogen Dovey (Y8) and Callum McQueen (Y9), took part in a citywide youth poetry slam event at the Arnolfini in September.

They performed two poems of their own creation on stage in front of an audience alongside ‘slammers’ from St Bede’s and North Bristol Post 16 Centre.

A thoroughly enjoyable event for all, we hope to return next year.

Filton College The Filton College Army Cadet Force were given the opportunity to travel to RAF Lyneham to support the medical staff in their preparation for deployment of Operation Herrick 15 to Afghanistan.

Members of Army Cadet Force were given the role of acting as casualties for RAF medical staff battle training.

17 cadets spent the morning participating in a battlefield simulation exercise during which they had to act out their injuries and be treated as required.

Susan Turnbull, head of public services, said: “The cadets were truly professional.” l Filton College staff and students celebrated Diwali, the Hindu festival of light.

People in attendance were treated to prayers, the Diwali story, dances and treats.

The College Chaplaincy holds a number of other events throughout the year including; Armistice Day, Advent Carols, Holocaust Memorial Day, Ash Wednesday and Ascension Day.

Schools and colleges Charborough Road Primary On Friday 4th November, Charborough Road Primary School was host to a great evening of fireworks and entertainment for all the family.

Families enjoyed the delights of a hulahopping fire eater, burgers and hot dogs from the BBQ and a fabulous firework display.

Animals give a lesson in learning Shield Road Primary Shield Road Primary School is using learning animals to promote good learning behaviour.

Each fortnight the children are introduced to a different learning animal in assembly.

The child receive certificates for their questioning or their perseverance etc over the week.

Head teacher Mr Mepham said: “Good behaviour is not just about following rules- it’s about having the right learning

attitude. Our recent LEA review observed that there was “good behaviour, enjoyment and attitudes of pupils and excellent relationships between pupils and adults”.

Students follow their Hallowe’en pledge with clean-up of local streets Orchard School Bristol Students at a Bristol secondary school have been taking their Hallowe’en pledge seriously by helping with a community clear-up.

Last month, every youngster at Orchard School in Horfield, which has many students from Filton, promised to take responsibility to make their neighbourhoods safe during trick or treat season.

And they followed this up the day after Hallowe’en, by taking to the streets around the school to pick up litter and conduct a general tidy-up.

The Hallowe’en pledge followed a series of assemblies in which they learned that Hallowe’en is not always fun for the elderly and those who live alone. They also designed posters for residents to place on their doors, indicating if they were happy or not to receive trick or treaters.

The students came up with

household concerned • I will help to make my community a safe place to enjoy Halloween Orchard School’s police liaison officer PCSO Kelly Parfitt said: “The students have really taken on board the idea that Hallowe’en is a time for fun but also a time to be mindful of others, especially the elderly.

“And they have been working hard to make sure that if any mess was left behind by others, they were on the spot to clear it up.”

Year 10 student James Loffler, 14, said: “It was a really good team effort and we were surprised how much rubbish there was.”

Jenny Dean, from Safer Bristol, said: “It is brilliant to see so many youngsters taking part in a positive community activity.”

It is entitled “The debt trap time bomb.” Appropriately, at Hallowe’en, it sends out a scary message. Here are some of the quotes from this article: • “£1,500,000,000,000 is the amount owed by individuals in the form of mortgages, overdrafts, loans and on credit cards.”

• “The numbers are shocking – they point to another looming crisis – which, perhaps, explains why no one at Westminster is willing to highlight them.”

• “According to the Office of Budget Responsibility, UK personal debt will grow by nearly 50 per cent between now and the end of this parliament. Come 2015, it is forecast to reach £2.12 trillion pounds.”

• “The average British adult already owes £29,500, about 123 per cent of average earnings.

Counselling Service identifies 6.2 million households as “financially vulnerable”, including 3.2 million that are already either three months behind with a debt payment or subject to some form of debt action.”

I help clients with unsecured debts as low as £5,000 and as high as £120,000 but the industry average for a family is about £28,000. At this level they are likely to be paying at least £700 per month.

If I can reduce the monthly payment to £200 or less than that would be an annual cash saving of over £6,000.

You must act now, though, because rental payments are increasing and mortgages are very cheap whilst the bank base rate is only 0.5%. Costs are only going to increase.

The government wants you to spend to boost the economy but as the last words of the article rightly advise “consumers should look after their families first”.

Charity coffee morning

Filton Chest and Heart charity will hold a coffee morning on Monday, November 28, during which they will receive a cheque from £1,500 from Filton Town Council.

The money was awarded in the last round of grant applications and it will go towards day trips for people with chest and heart conditions.

Members of the group are dedicated to raising cash which, in the past, has gone towards vital equipment to be used by local people.

They run day trips three times a year, in Spring, Autumn and at Christmas, during which transport and lunch is organised by the group.

The coffee morning will take place at the Pavilion, Elm Park.

Council chairman Adam Monk said: “Filton Town Council is really happy to be supporting a Filton charity who provide immeasurable benefit to the local community, not only providing trips for the patients in area with Chest & Heart issues but also providing essential equipment to local doctor surgeries as well.

“We know that this money will be used wisely.”

‘Cafe’ at Ratepayers

The Ratepayers Arms at Filton Sports & Leisure Centre will be open daily (Mon – Fri) from 9.30am -2.30pm serving hot and cold food/drinks.

These new hours started last week and organisers want to promote the idea of the facility as a cafe, serving coffee, tea and cakes as well as the usual bar service.

Art for ‘hub’ The new Patchway ‘locality hub’, which provides children’s health services for people in Filton, has said it will work with families to make sure it is ‘child friendly’.

One family said they were told by health professionals that staff were not allowed to put up posters which would make the facility more welcoming.

Now South Gloucestershire Council has said there are plans to introduce artwork and that families will be invited to give their input.

The hub was at the centre of a row last month when it was revealed the Filton Clinic in Shield Road was going to close, moving its services to the hub.

Since then, have officials have decided to review this process and consult with the public, meaning the Filton clinic, which offers a mother and baby clinic, will be staying open for now.

Filton families are offered at Patchway.

A South Gloucestershire spokesperson said: “Since the hub opened in Patchway last month, the feedback from visitors has been positive and plans are already underway to include some art work which would appeal to children in the reception area and in the consultation rooms and therapy areas of both hubs.

“We want to involve children and their families in this process and would very much welcome the opportunity to work with local service users to take this part of the project forward now that the buildings are open.

“Children’s charity Barnardos have also been approached to work with young people in the area to produce some artwork.”

Filton councillor Ian Scott said: “It would be a concern if a new build was not child friendly.”

£27k cost to taxpayers after council complaint A complaint by one Filton Labour councillor about another cost council taxpayers £27,000 in legal bills.

Roger Hutchinson, a South Glos councillor and former Filton Town councillor, appeared before a Standards Committee in February after allegations about his conduct, one of which was an allegation of abusive remarks against fellow Labour councillor, Adam Monk, now chairman of the town council. This specific complaint was not upheld.

The committee was presented with two volumes of reports which ran to 900 pages. Mr Hutchinson was found to have breached the councillors’ code of conduct on just two counts, however it was felt these were relatively minor and no sanctions were necessary, and he was cleared on several other matters.

Thought for the month with Fr Tom Finnegan, parish priest of St. Teresa’s in Filton and St. Vincent’s in Southmead I can honestly say that November is not my most favourite month of the year.

Summer (what we had of one) is a distant memory.

The clocks have gone back and the days are getting shorter.

Although still quite mild, the wind and the rain are showing ominous signs of winter. To top it all, Christmas is still a long way away. Yet despite this there can, at this time of year, be a serene beauty and calm that descends over the landscape.

It is no wonder then that in this month we are invited to remember. Up and down the nation, Remembrance Sunday has been marked with

its usual sombreness. Crowds have gathered at numerous cenotaphs, to recall the price of so many for our freedom.

Hymns and songs have been sung and the prayers of many have been said. From the smallest village to the biggest city, old and young have thought deeply about the ills of war.

For the Christian, November is also a time when the Holy Souls are commemorated.

Special services are held in honour of all the countless souls who have died before us. In remembering them the Christian is also invited to remember the brevity of their own lives and that the day and the hour of

their death is not known. This however is not a sombre or macabre activity, but a joyful one. In remembering the dead the Christian professes the belief that when death comes, it is not the end but rather the beginning. That just as the landscape is shutting down for the winter, there is the sure and certain hope of a new spring when the Sun begins to warm the earth once again.

So whilst this month is not my most favourite out of the twelve, it is often the one that makes me think deeply on the mysteries of life and the mysteries of death.

We will remember them.

‘The Advertising Myth’ It would not be unreasonable to assume that as a property comes on the market, the instructed estate agent will post the property information on various internet property portals and wait for the enquiries to roll in.

However, this approach is somewhat simplistic! We take a much more strategic and proactive approach to handling new buyer enquiries. There is a fallacy surrounding adverts in that many people think that a property sells as a direct result of the publication of its corresponding advertisement.

This is simply not true in most cases.

In fact, the overwhelming

majority of buyers who enquire about a specific property do not go on to buy it, but buy something else instead.

This is because only limited information can be conveyed in an advertisement, such as price, location, accommodation and condition. Yet the decision to buy is usually much more complex, and is something that cannot adequately be assimilated until the property is actually visited. So whilst it is important to choose an agent that advertises extensively, it is more important to choose an agent who knows what to do with an advertisement enquiry than simply putting the buyer on a mailing list!

A good agent will use good adverts to attract buyers, and then use their skill, training and judgement to help the buyer identify the right property – which in all probability will not turn out to be the one about which they enquired.

IT problems

Story Filton Town Council is having to review its complete IT network after investigations into a system issue revealed a bigger problem.

Views We are constantly told by councils they manage our money properly and effectively.

How long has this system been like this?

It may lead to a better system now, but why was it ignored when they decided to spend £100,000 on a new office? We’ve had a risky car park without disabled spaces marked out and now risky IT systems.

Danny Boy The condition of the IT has been a concern of the new council and we have been looking into the state of the business systems within FTC. We identified a long time ago no back-ups were being carried out and put in place an immediate action to rectify that.

Have your say before police station closes

Residents and businesses in Filton and the surrounding areas have been finding out about detailed plans for a new Police Custody and Crime Investigation Centre and Police Station.

Located at 90 Gloucester Road, Patchway at the former Bensons site, this facility will contain a 48-cell centralised Custody and Crime Investigation Centre and a Police Station to serve the surrounding communities. This will replace the existing Filton Police Station at Elm Park, pictured.

Public consultation was held recently at which members of the public were invited to drop in to view the plans, discuss any questions with members of the team and feed back their comments. The updated plans are also be available at www. avonandsomerset.police.uk/ accommodation and there is an opportunity to provide feedback online.

Chief Inspector Mark Evans, Operational Lead for the Accommodation Programme, said: “90 Gloucester Road will house one of the three centralised custody centres across the force area, which will help us to process offenders more efficiently and return our officers faster to the communities where they are needed. It will also provide much improved facilities for our witnesses and victims.

“These plans will not affect local policing; we are committed to maintaining our neighbourhood teams who will continue to patrol in the areas they do now.”

Chair of the Police Authority, Dr Peter Heffer said: “We know we need to invest in the longterm future of the police service, giving our staff decent working conditions and putting them in the right places to respond to public need.

“We are clear that trying to patch and repair our way through the next 30 years would be an expensive and unsatisfactory solution for both our people and our communities.”

This facility is one of four new buildings that Avon and Somerset Police are building as part of the Accommodation Programme, Building for the Future, which is being funded by Private Finance Initiative (PFI).

Funding has been confirmed by the Home Office and the final approval will follow in December 2011/January 2012.

Construction is expected to start in summer 2012 and the building will open in early 2014.

Grumbles? Go online

A number of new online forms have been created to make it quicker and easier for Filton people to contact the council.

So whether residents need to order a new bin, report a missed rubbish collection, report a pothole or let South Gloucestershire Council know about a faulty street light, the new forms are straightforward and easy to use and will save having to make a phone call.

The technology includes interactive maps to make it easier to pinpoint an exact location. The system also tracks the number of customers reporting the same problem, letting the council prioritise any issues.

These forms are already being used at all of the council’s one stop shops and contact centres but now you can also access them in the comfort of your own home for all waste and Street Care services.

Waste and Street Care are the first to go online, and revenues and benefits forms will go live next year. Do it online by visiting www.southglos.gov.uk and report it now.

Hospital’s role in the ca

At this time of Remembrance, we thought we would look back to Southmead Hospital’s role as an Army hospital These images are part of which the hospital has m the public in the lead-up of the new facilities in 2 A remarkable archive of pictures showing Southmead Hospital, staff and patients over the past 100 years has been opened up online. And it includes these wonderful images dating back to when it was used as an army hospital during the First World War. The hospital, which is reopening with ultra modern facilities in 2014, first opened in 1902 as a 64-bed workhouse for poor sick people and by 1911 there were 520 beds.

In the early 1920s the facilities once again became a workhouse before the Southmead Infirmary was built in 1924 - later renamed Southmead Hospital.

Some of the pictures show early medical procedures and equipment, including a baby in the first oxygen incubator.

The arrival of the first surviving quads in the world to be born by caesarean in 1948, the Good quadruplets, is also captured on camera.

Photographs of doctors, nurses and porters are included, charting the change in uniforms through the 20th century as well as images of wards showing changes in nursing care.

The archive also includes

visits by royals and dignitaries including King George and Queen Mary being welcomed by hundreds of people to open the new surgical wing in 1912.

The opening of Elgar House in September 1991 by Diana, Princess of Wales is also remembered.

The pictures have been given to the project by people whose relatives worked at Southmead or were cared for at the hospital.

People can also submit their own photographs of Southmead Hospital through the ages.

As well as the archive gallery, the new website has an interactive map to explore how the new £430m hospital at Southmead will look when it opens in 2014.

Ruth Brunt, Chief Executive of North Bristol NHS Trust, said: “These photographs show the fascinating historical journey of Southmead Hospital, its community and the city of Bristol. It has been wonderful to see these snapshots of hospital life through the 20th century.

Ballet Bristol will be performing in their 3rd Year Anniversary Gala at Filton College’s Olympus Theatre,Stoke Gifford on Sunday, December 4.

Filton gardening ... with Pip Dixon November: Preparing for striking yellows

Remember not everything will flower straight away. Now is the perfect time to prepare for spring and we have some great products available throughout November.

Daffodils and Narcissus We have a fantastic selection of daffodils and narcissus at the moment that will give you a massive display of bright yellow flowers next spring and now is the best time to plant them.

Some of my favourites include daffodil Camelot, Cyclopes, Carlton and the double Golden Ducat And Narcissus Tete^Tete, Rip Van Winkle (double) and the very early flowering February Gold. There are many other brilliant varieties available in all shapes and sizes.

Daffodils and Narcissus are easy to grow and there’s a variety for every garden from a window box in a flat to mass planting in large wooded gardens. It’s also brilliant for kids to have a go at getting their hands dirty in the garden and learning how things grow. I know my kids love it!!

Jasminum nudiflorum (Winter Jasmine) A very popular shrub usually grown as a climber/wall shrub requires training as it does not actually twine like other jasmine, the stems are very dense and give the impression that it is evergreen, even in

winter when the tiny bright yellow flowers appear in there thousands covering the whole plant. Very hardy and easy to grow in full sun or partial shade in most soil conditions. Regular pruning prevents the plant from becoming too woody and encourages flowering.

Choisya Ternata Sundance A very popular evergreen shrub that’s is low maintenance. It has bright yellow foliage and scented white flowers in early summer and sometimes again in autumn, height and spread is approx 5ft but can be pruned or containerised to keep in check.

Best in full sun or partial shade with well drained soil happy in acidic, chalky or alkaline.

Erica Arborea Alberts Gold - Tree Heather Evergreen spring flowering compact tree heather with stunning gold foliage especially vibrant during winter months, masses of white slightly scented flowers are produced around may time. Height 5-6ft and best in full sun and well drained neutral-acid soil.

Youngsters urged to get behind the wheel at 16 Young people in Filton are being offered the chance to learn what it takes to become competent drivers through a course aimed at 16-year-olds.

Would-be young drivers will learn road safety and have the chance to get behind the wheel on a private road network.

During the sessions, in Yate, they will learn car handling skills in a safe environment. This special course which is run in partnership with North Avon Driving Instructors’ Association and South Glos Council.

The Junior Drivers course targets young people before they reach their 17th Birthday.

Alan Hale, senior road safety officer, said: “This course is invaluable for young people

looking to gain the confidence and skills required to become a competent driver. Nationally, one in five newly qualified drivers will have a crash within six months of passing their test. Students are given the basic car control skills in a safe environment. Perhaps this could be the best birthday or Christmas present you can give to your son or daughter.”

The next course starts on January 5 and runs for six weeks.

It costs £96 which includes six theory sessions and six one-hour practical sessions on the road with a qualified instructor.

Further course dates are planned on the following dates: February 23, April 19, June 14, September 6 and November 1.

The glory of Hillier’s garden

Dougie Daniels joined members of Filton Garden Club on their recent trip to a spectacular setting in Hampshire

T

here is a well-known saying that you are “nearer God’s heart in a garden than anywhere else on Earth”.

I felt that was the opinion of Filton Garden Club members who I accompanied on their recent visit to Hillier’s renowned gardens in Hampshire.

Situated in Romsey, it is perhaps one of the largest ‘gardens’ in the UK, covering 180 acres of carefully cultivated landscape where plants gathered from all round the world are grown.

It was the pride of Sir Harold Hillier who endeavoured to follow in his late father’s and grandfather’s footsteps, gathering plants - hardy in the UK - to include in his gardens in Hampshire for everyone to enjoy.

He later created a charitable trust, with Hampshire County Council becoming its sole trustee.

Along with 40 members of the Garden Club and their friends we travelled via a scenic route to Romsey, harassed somewhat by road diversions.

It was the low bridges where the coach could not pass under that gave most problems.

All praise to driver Mike of Anick’s Travel. His U-turns and skilled manoeuvres earned wide acclaim.

The visit was organised by Pat and Brian Smith.

The Darkroom During the break in output

by Filton’s Apollo Players, it’s necessary to venture further afield for theatrical entertainment, and one of my favourite venues is the delightful Alma Tavern Theatre in Alma Vale Road, Clifton.

It is currently host to Theatre West’s Picture This season, in which playwrights were challenged to write a play inspired by a photograph drawn at random, and last month, I went along to see the first in the series of resulting productions.

Written by Steve Lambert, ‘The Darkroom’ is set in 1949, during the period of austerity following the end of the Second World War. It tells the story of a young wife, Faye (Charlotte Ellis, an alumnus of the South West Academy of Dramatic Arts in Filton), and her attempts to return to normal family life with her

Deborah Harvey husband, James (Gerard Cooke), an insomniac haunted by his wartime experiences at Bletchley Park. The arrival of his former colleague and Tory playboy, William (Duncan Bonner), and the opening of a metal box left in the couple’s lodgings by a fourth character, Peter, precipitate a tumult of secrets – military, political and sexual – which changes all of their lives for ever.

Directed by Pameli Benham, and with a superb set designed by Ruth Stringer, ‘The Darkroom’ was taut and compelling. Although it has now finished its run, the Picture This season runs until 10th December.

Deborah Harvey is a writer.

Her novel, ‘Dart’, is due to be published in 2012.

Book Launch for ‘Communion’

by Deborah Harvey, Halo Café Bar, 4th November 2011 I had never been to a book launch before, let alone one for a book of poetry, so I did not really know what to expect from the launch night of Deborah Harvey’s first collection, Communion. I now fear the bar has been set rather high: Harvey delivered a night of excellent entertainment, interspersing her poems with arch commentary on their origins, and thoughtful folk music from Reg Meuross.

Filton poet Harvey led her audience into a labyrinth of ideas and themes ranging from local places (Bristol, Somerset, and Dartmoor all made appearances) to relationships to mythology, to war. In spite of this variety, and the weight of some of the subject matters, encountering her poetry felt a consistently personal experience: the poet has a particular knack for drawing out the more intimate aspects of her themes and making her work accessible and relevant for

her audience. Although being witness to her poetry was, at times, an emotional experience, Harvey is no sensationalist: she evokes others’ feelings with consideration and precision.

Part of the success of the evening lay in the way in which Harvey’s poems dovetailed with Meuross’s songs: he echoed her themes in his work, at times performing songs about the same places and people. They functioned seamlessly as a double act, each enriching the other’s work with their own and, between them, maintaining an atmosphere of laughter and sharing. Rather than watching disparate artists perform, it felt as though we were observing a conversation between song and poem, a sense that was particularly heightened by the use of multiple voices in some of Harvey’s poems.

Now I am no longer a book launch virgin, I greatly look forward to the launch of Harvey’s debut novel, Dart, in 2012.

How many of you in Filton have heard of Golden Oldies? This is a charity that was set up in Bath a few years ago by choir leader Grenville Jones, and now supports sessions in Somerset and increasingly around the Bristol area.

Filton has a session every Thursday at Sinclair House, from 10.30 to 11.30. You don’t need to be a talented musician to join. If you enjoyed the popular songs that were around in the 1960s and 70s, this could be your chance to relive a bit of your youth in like-minded company.

with all your old favourites.

Our Goldies sessions are also a wonderful opportunity for less able-bodied folk and their helpers to join in the fun of a community activity. It’s good to see them all enjoying themselves for that special hour every week.

A motion by Labour councillors, seeking the support of South Gloucestershire Council, was tabled last month

Voluntary and community groups in Filton are being invited to bid for help with the running costs of projects that benefit local people.

South Gloucestershire Council’s small grants revenue scheme allocates up to £3,000 per project to help with running costs such as venue hire, staff costs or publicity.

Any scheme that meets local needs will be considered and applications can be submitted under categories including art and culture, children and play, community safety, promoting equality and tackling poverty.

Nearly 130 community groups benefited from the scheme last year. In total more than £200,000 is available to the scheme in the 2012/13 session.

Applications to this year’s grant round can be submitted until 5 December.

Around 25 people gathered in Shield Road to show their support for the BS34 campaign, which is being run by Councillor Bill Moore. Cllr Moore previously fought a successful campaign to have Filton recognised in its own right as a postal address.

Brian Smith, who organised a petition on the issue, said: “Around 90% of the people we spoke to were in favour of changing to BS34. It’s costing us money to be part of BS7.”

Filton news in brief Employers wanted

A group of talented Filton construction students are eagerly in need of employers.

Twenty apprentices from Filton College need employers which can offer on site work experience needed so they can complete their apprenticeship.

The apprentices are studying across all six construction trades; plastering, electrical, carpentry, brickwork, plumbing and painting and decorating.

Over the summer school break, the apprentices were employed by the college to help refurbish the Construction Academy. The students completed work in demolition, creation of work areas, relocation of services and decoration.

Head of the Construction Academy George Ridd said: “Apprenticeships are fantastic for students. It’s also a great

Mrs Dawson’s Filton kitchen Christmas cake Mrs Dawson says: “Now is just the right time to make your own delicious Christmas cake! This cake can be made 4-6 weeks before Christmas. During this time, pierce the cake with a fine needle and spoon over 2/3tbsp brandy.”

Ingredients • 225g/8oz/1.3 cups sultanas • 225g/8oz/1.3 cups currants • 225g/8oz/1.3 cups raisins • 115g/4oz/1 cups prunes, stoned and chopped • 50g/2oz/0.25 cups glace cherries halved • 45ml/ 3 tbsps brandy or sherry • 50g/2oz/0.3 cups mixed candy citrus peel, chopped • 225g/8oz/2 cups plain flour • pinch salt • 2.5ml/0.5tsp ground cinnamon • 2.5ml/0.5tsp grated nutmeg • 15ml/0.5tbsp cocoa powder • 225g/8oz/1 cup butter • 225g/8oz/1 generous cup soft dark brown sugar • 4 large eggs • finely grated rind of 1 orange or lemon • 50g/2oz/0.7cup ground almonds • 50g/2oz/0.5cup chopped almonds To decorate • 60ml/4tbsp apricot jam • 25cm/10in round cake board • 450g/1lb almond paste • 450g/1lb white fondant icing

Method 1. The day before cooking, put all dried fruit to soak in brandy or sherry. cover with film and leave overnight. Grease a 20cm/8in round cake tin and line with double thickness greaseproof paper.

2. Next day, preheat oven to 170C/325F/ Gas 3. Sift together flour, salt spices and cocoa. Whisk butter and sugar together until light and fluffy and beat in eggs gradually. Mix in orange or lemon rind, almonds, dried fruit (with liquid) and the flour mixture.

3. Spoon into the prepared cake tin, level and give the tin a gentle tap on work surface to settle mixture. Bake for 3 hours or until a fine skewer comes out clean. Transfer tin to wire rack and let cool for an hour. Then carefully turn out the cake onto rack but leave paper on to keep moist. When cold, wrap tight in foil and store in cool place.

4. Warm then sieve apricot jam to make glaze. Remove paper from the cake and place it in the centre of the cake board and brush it with hot apricot glaze.

Cover the cake with a layer of almond paste and then a layer of fondant icing. Decorate with any trimmings left over from the fondant icing or add decorations of your own.

Brass band carols

Filton’s award-winning brass band, Filton Concert Brass, is holding a carol concert on Sunday, December 18, at Filton Community Centre, provisionally planned for 3pm.

It is hoped choirs, groups, singers and instrumentalists from the neigbourhood will take part.

Airfield study call

An independent study should be carried out to see if Filton airfield could operate as a going concern, say campaigners.

The Save Filton Airfield Group claims the owners, BAE Systems, who wish to close the site, have deliberately run it down to maximise profits for its shareholders.

New police cadets on parade

Filton beat with Sgt Steve Ives I’m sure most of you will have noticed, but the nights are drawing in. Obviously this means autumn is upon us, which also unfortunately means there is more opportunity for criminals to operate under cover of darkness.

At this time of year we usually experience a rise in theft of items from garages, sheds, cars and vans. Your vigilance would greatly reduce these incidents and give us a greater chance of catching offenders. Please stay alert, in touch with your neighbours and don’t hesitate to contact the police if you see something suspicious.

We are also experiencing a rise in the number of cycles being stolen, mainly from schools and colleges. Cyclists: please ensure you own a good standard lock and that you use it when leaving your bike unattended. Please mark your bike with your postcode and register it at www.immobilise. com – we do recover a number of bikes we suspect are stolen but are not marked, so we can’t trace the owner.

which is 101. Dial this number from any phone and you will get through to the force call centre.

I would like to thank residents for their continued support. We have recently executed warrants in relation to stolen items and drug use in the area as a direct result of information from the public. You are our eyes and ears, and if we work together we can ensure Filton continues to be a safe place to live and work. If you suspect it, report it!

Avon and Somerset’s new Volunteer Police Cadets donned their uniforms for the first time at a launch event last month.

The teenagers, aged 14 to 17, from across South Gloucestershire and including Filton, chose to parade in front of senior officers, sponsors and their families at Downend Day Care Centre instead of joining friends to enjoy the Hallowe’en festivities.

The scheme is backed

by John Lewis, South Gloucestershire Council and Filton College.

The 10 young women and 19 young men are taking part in a pilot based in South Gloucestershire.

Assistant Chief Constable Anthony Bangham, who inspected the cadets’ first parade, said: “What an inspirational group of young people you are, making a positive contribution to your communities.”

A group of police officers and

staff have volunteered to train the cadets in a range of skills in their own time, and they will meet each week during term time at Downend Day Care Centre.

After suitable training they will be expected to carry out a range of activities, under supervision, including: • Accompanying regular police officers and PCSOs on routine patrols and at events; • Delivering crime prevention leaflets; • Security marking property.

The Volunteer Police Cadets come from communities across South Gloucestershire, including Bradley Stoke, Bridgeyate, Charfield, Chipping Sodbury, Downend, Emersons Green, Filton, Hambrook, Hanham, Kingswood, Longwell Green, Rudgeway, Thornbury, Warmley, Wick, Willsbridge and Yate.

The support of John Lewis, South Gloucestershire Council and Filton College enabled the pilot scheme to be run at no cost.

FilTEEN Finally! The day I had been waiting for, for many months. The Xbox game of the year finally came out.

This particular game was a war game, in which you would be a soldier fighting others from around the world.

My friend’s mum took both of us to the Mall to buy the game. It was a lot of money, but worth every penny due to the graphics, game play and bonus extra features.

A few short days afterwards, I proudly wore my poppy, as always, for our school ‘remembrance day’ service. It made me stop and think.

Many of us play these games for fun, but real soldiers are fighting (or have fought) for our country, often giving their lives, and experiencing warfare for real.

For them, it’s far from a game and I, for one, am grateful for their bravery...
