A campaign has been launched to change all of Filton’s postcodes to BS34. Currently some areas of the town come under the Bristol BS7 postcode.

Cllr Bill Moore, who fought a successful battle to have Filton recognised by the Post Office as a postal address, is now urging residents and South Gloucestershire Council to get behind the campaign. He said: “Among other things, a change could lead to lower insurance for Filton residents.

Business jet hopes

Filton Airfield could be transformed into a prestigious business jet airport, campaigners have told filtonvoice.

The Save Filton Airfield Group will tell South Gloucestershire councillors that an airport for business people would be financially viable and would also preserve Filton’s reputation as a centre for aerospace excellence.

The group is carrying out a study which will establish a case for a business airfield. If it proves to be potentially viable, they hope BAE Systems, the owners of the site, would run it themselves or lease to another operator.

BAE Systems say the site loses money every year and they want to sell it off for ‘mixed use development’. This has led to storms of protest in Filton.

Save Filton Airfield spokesman Martin Farmer said: “There could be considerable spin-off effects of a business jet airport at Filton.”

Tim Shorland, the man who took on BAE before house building began on the north side of Filton airfield in 2006, has told filtonvoice that scrapping the airfield is ‘ourtrageous’.

Mr Shorland, the Lord of the Manor of Hempton and Northwick, which includes part of Filton Airfield, said: “The proposal of scrapping the airfield is outrageous.

“Filton Airfield holds great memories for many people in Bristol. It not only signifies great achievements in Bristol – namely the launching of Concorde - but it also holds a lot of history that many people are not even aware of; there are the graves of people that were left in air raid shelters after they were bombed” Mr Shorland said that

while there is a lot of nostalgia surrounding the Airfield there are also practical issues.

He said he was fearful about how much BAE would put back into the community.

He said that at the bottom end of the site there is a large quantity of common land.

He said this can be neither bought nor sold as it belongs to the people.

He added: “The Lord of the Manor of Compton Greenfield also owns the mines and Tim Shorland acquired the ancient title of Lord of the Manor in 1990.

He was concerned at the amount of land being bought up by large companies and buit upon. He has also worked closely with schools and churches in his ‘manor’.

Last week an independent report demonstrated that Filton Airfield is economically unviable and in fact was running at the huge loss of £3million a year.

Unfortunately we must come to terms with the prospect that the Airfield will close for good at the end of next year.

I am very sad that it is going – I am an aviation enthusiast and have always enjoyed watching the plane’s flying in and out from my house, from where I have a great view of the runway.

But let’s recognise the fantastic opportunity that has presented itself, a once-in-ageneration chance to create thousands of jobs and secure the future of our world leading local industries.

The local Labour Party has been proved wrong. Despite a £7 million investment by BAE no customers were forthcoming to take on the airfield. Airbus, the main user, turned down the opportunity to take over the

minerals at the airfield and they therefore would not be able to dig below a certain level.”

Mr Shorland said responsibility of the Airfield should change to Airbus who should run it as a standalone business.

He said: “It is clear that the planned closure is causing upset amongst the people of Bristol.

Once it’s destroyed it stays destroyed and Bristol will never get the opportunity to build something like this again” “The airfield is not just a monument to Britain’s industrial past. It remains an opportunity for Bristol to be a world leader in aviation.”

• A drop-in exhibition on the future of the airfield will be held on Monday, October 17 at the BAWA Club, Southmead Road, Filton from 3pm until 7.30pm. Unstaffed exhibitions at Filton Library will be held from October 18-24. airfield and have said that the closure will not adversely affect their future business in Filton.

GKN, Rolls Royce, MBDA to name a few have all told me that their future plans for local expansion are not influenced by the Airfield.

The Labour Party hasn’t been straight with people either, they haven’t come up with a single real potential option to make up the shortfall of £3m a year, or taken into consideration that local people do not want a busy commercial airport on their doorsteps.

So the local industry is satisfied with the plans and continues to expand; just look at the new £70 million Airbus campus at Pegasus House. Last week Airbus landed a record breaking £6bn contract to build planes that are part-designed and engineered at Filton – these contracts continue to roll in and are not jeopardised by the airfield closure.

The redevelopment of the site has enormous potential.

It’s about securing and creating new jobs. It’s also about more affordable housing, more open green space and a permanent home for Concorde.

The case has been made. It’s time to choose what we want for the future benefit of our area.

Airbus reveals new look and multi-million pound plans for gateway to Filton For several years, it has been covered in scaffolding and large sheets.

But filtonvoicehas revealed how Pegasus House, the large box-shape building on the A38, will look as part of Airbus’s plans

to build a new multi-million pound office campus in Filton.

The company revealed in March its plans to re-develop a site in Filton into a modern, highly efficient engineering and technology campus.

A spokesman said: “Part of the business park plan is for the renovation of Pegasus House, a Grade II listed building. We are working very closely with the council and other stakeholders as part of our plans to sympa-

thetically restore the building which has played a key role in the history of aviation in the region.

Subject to planning permission we would hope to have the main building work start next year with completion in 2013.”

Tackling the yobs

Filton’s very own championship brass band, Filton Concert Brass, is planning a Christmas carol concert, in conjunction with filtonvoice.

Proposals by the Boundary Commission for England could mean Thornbury could become part of a new Thornbury and Filton seat.

Parking bays at pool fixed Hospital takes shape

It is now more than a year since construction work started on North Bristol NHS Trust’s new hospital at Southmead and the building is fast taking shape.

The new £430m hospital will be open to patients in Spring 2014. Some of the main benefits of the new hospital include: Ruth Brunt, Chief Executive at North Bristol NHS Trust, said: “The Southmead site has changed beyond recognition in the past year and we can now see how the new hospital will look.”

Call 101 for police

People in Filton, and across the Avon and Somerset police area, will be able to call the police with a new number - 101 - from September 19.

The number is part of an initiative to make it easier for people to get in touch with police for non-emergencies.

Historic house support

Filton Town Council will support a feasibility study to assist a business case to save historic Conygre House.

Friends of Conygre House want to buy the building from South Gloucesteshire Council to benefit the community. If they cannot make the business case, the building could be sold on the open market.

Filton Town Council have repainted the parking bays for disabled people at the sports and leisure centre in Elm Park.

Some residents had complained the markings were not clear, meaning leisure centre users without a disabled pass were using the spaces.

At a meeting of the finance committee last month, it was agreed the work would be carried out ‘as soon as possible’.

Mum Faith Tutton needs to use the disabled parking bays when she brings her daughters Lucy and Sophie to the leisure centre, pictured above.

Sophie requires the use of a wheelchair and Faith says it makes life very difficult if the bay is not available.

She said: “The bays there were so badly painted that people without blue badges were parking there.”

M Council chairman Adam Monk said: “We are pleased families like Mrs Tutton’s will now find it easier to enjoy the facilities at the leisure centre.”

Jubilee party in park

Elm Park Working Group wants to host a ‘Party in the Park’ to mark the Queen’s Jubilee next summer.

The event would run from June 2- June 5, with the possibility that it also serves as a charity fundraiser.

Filton town councillor Andrew Chubb said the group has proposed several activities, including bands, sports, kite flying and comedy.

A survey carried out by the group has also shown that residents want the area kept for recreational use or designated as a town green.

Remaing meetings this year for the group are on October 19, November 23 and December 14, at Elm PArk pavilion.

Cllr Chubb said “ Any and all Filton residents are not only welcome, but encouraged to join us”

‘Ferocious dogs’ fear

Residents told a Safer Stronger Filton meeting that there are real worries over people with ferocious dogs using Millennium Green in Northville.

Andrew Robinson, from Pine Grove, said that the dogs were being encouraged to tear bits off trees and that he had also collected evidence of drugs use. The meeting heard that residents feared these dogs, which were unmuzzled, could attack a child.

PCSO Sheryll Drewitt told a meeting of the town council that police had been loking into it and that the situaiton appeared to have calmed down.

Books of the month with the staff from Filton Library

Children’s book The Way Back Home,

by Oliver Jeffers This picture book is a delightful story of a boy who flies into space and runs out of fuel. He lands on the moon and makes friends with a martian who also has a broken aeroplane.

Together they come up with a plan to get them both safely home to their different planets.

The quirky illustrations add to the appeal of this book and it will be loved by budding space explorers everywhere.

One for the adults A year on a dairy farm, by Richard Cornock This is a real treat and a gem of a book. The photography is excellent, providing a journalistic view of life on the farm. What comes over particularly well is the feeling of the seasons.

You feel cold reading the winter sections, while the ones in the middle of the year are evocative of long, lazy summer evenings.

I thinks what is particularly special about this book is that it will go down as a slice of real history, and people who read it in years to come will have a true feeling of what life was like in the early years of this century in rural Gloucestershire.

Our loos are the best in Britain St Teresa’s Primary Children and teachers at St Teresa’s Primary School are flushed with pride after winning a national award for their toilets.

The nationwide awards scheme is run by Bog Standard, the campaigning arm of the children’s charity ERIC Abbeywood Community School Over 150 students, parents and staff at Abbeywood Community School celebrated multicultural Bristol by dancing and singing.

Every year group was involved as well as ex student rappers Jinxta and Twizzy.

The event was organized by music teacher Angus Bailey to promote the work of Love Music Hate Racism. l Students at Abbeywood Community School marked the comprehensive’s first year with improved exam results. Head teacher Ann Duff was delighted 41 per cent of students achieved five or more A* to C grades including English and maths, with 58 per cent getting five or more A* to C grades in all subjects. l Students from Filton are getting on their bikes thanks to a loan scheme supported by South Gloucestershire Council.

The Cyked scheme gives students the chance to hire one of 40 bikes to help them travel between Abbeywood Community School, Filton College, Patchway Community College and Bradley Stoke Community School, Partnership working means that some students attend lessons at more than one site.

Head teacher Amanda Pritchard said; “We are delighted to receive this award.

“We place high importance on health and wellbeing.”

Schools and colleges in Filton Art project is really wild stuff for youngsters Shield Road Primary Year 3 children have been studying a topic called Amazing Africa. They have worked collaboratively to create these African animals which they put up in their classroom.

Meanwhile, children in Year 5 have been creating self portraits using Andy Wahol’s work to inspire them.

School becomes a pens-free zone Charborough Road Primary Earlier this term, Charborough Road School pupils took part in No Pens Wednesday, a national speaking and listening event, encouraging schools to put down their pens and pick up their language.

On Wednesday, all lessons in the school focussed on speaking and listening rather than writing.

Headteacher, Nicola Bailey, said, “We were delighted to take part in No Pens Wednesday.

Reading and writing are very important skills, but people are often not aware of the vital importance of speaking and

listening skills. They underpin everything! The children have really enjoyed today, and the teachers have benefited too!”

One of the activities in Year 3 involved the teacher painting a picture behind a screen, so that the children could not see.

She described what she was doing as she went along, and the children had to paint their own pictures, at the same time, following her instructions.

There were mixed results, and the children learnt that careful listening – and a clear explanation from their teacher – are vital!

Filton College Students and staff from Filton College, the University of Bristol and UWE have just returned from a four week volunteering expedition to Kenya.

The team of 13 students and staff levelled out the community football pitch and dug drainage ditches around the pitch and other community buildings including the local church. The team also cemented in the metal goal posts, dug a long jump pit and cleared and marked out a netball and volley ball pitch.

Phil Tanner, 18, from Filton College, said: “It was a really good experience as it boosted my confidence and proved to me that it was possible to do things that I thought I couldn’t do. I loved helping to organise the sports festival.”

Former Filton College student, Michael Stewart, currently studying at London’s UDANG Academy, visited the College’s Dance department to hold a series of dance workshops for the national diploma dance students, Tuesday 6th September 2011.

This inspirational workshop was set up to help the students hone their skills and build confidence.

Danielle Agar, a dance student, said: “Working with Michael has given me the confidence to pursue my chosen vocation.

“This has prepared me for auditions to prestigious centres such as the Urdang Academy.”

Examples from both projects are printed above.

Still on the animal theme, Shield Road children are using animals to help them realise that good school behaviour is about learning and about positive attitudes.

Finally, in assembly, we celebrated European Language day.

Full circle with Deborah Harvey Filton. Having grown up here, in Wallscourt Road and then Kenmore Drive, I thought I’d left for good when I headed north to university. Over the following decade, I lived in Lancaster, Marburg in West Germany, Soviet Leningrad, Taunton, Romford, Cardiff and Banbury, before returning to Bristol in late1990.

By then I was expecting my third child, and when, three years later, number four came along, I realised we needed a larger house than I could afford in rarefied Westbury Park.

So I stuck the baby in a cot at the foot of the bed and started buying lottery tickets.

Then my middle two children were placed in the language unit at Charborough Road School – trauma enough for a former Shield Roader, without having to be in two places at once, marshalling number one child to and from her school and waiting at home for the others’ taxi.

The solution was to move back, and in 1996 we did.

When, that first afternoon, I walked into the playground at Charborough Road, one of the other mothers approached me. ‘You won’t remember me,’ she said, ‘but I used to babysit you when you were small.’ ‘Oh,’ said a second, ‘so you’re Jenny’s mum. I was in the year below you at Shield Road.’

Filton – a place where people have roots. What a pleasure, then, to be writing for filtonvoice. Over the coming months, I’ll be exploring the arts, in our town and further afield. I hope you’ll join me.

Lest we forget them

As we approach Armistice Day, well-known Filton councillor Dougie Daniels had a special reason to visit the battlefields of northern France “ I felt my father was with me, describing what it had been like.”

travelled recently, along with my cousin, Norman, to the battlefields of World War I. We predicted it would be a moving experience.

My father, a serving officer in the regular army, was badly wounded at Passchendale and we felt we had a mission to see for oursleves the location of the horrendous battles he had endured to help preserve the life we enjoy today.

My father often held me spellbound describing the action and i hoped that one day I would have the opportunity to visit these historic sites.

Journeying via Dover to Calais, we went to Arras and Ypres where the fiercest battles took place.

It always goes down particularly well with my grandchildren on bonfire night and is a great alternative to hot dogs”.

There were several smaller cemeteries around Arras besides this one. it was hard to imagine as we progressed comfortably by car that our soldiers had

Ingredients • 454g (1lb) pork sausages • ½ butternut squash, peeled and thinly sliced • 2 large potatoes, thinly sliced • 1 large turnip, thinly sliced • 1tbsp vegetable oil • 1 onion, chopped • 2 large sprigs fresh thyme • 150ml (¼pt) cider or apple juice • 150ml (¼pt) pork stock • 1tbsp gravy granules • Seasoning, knob of butter Method 1. Preheat oven to 190ºC/375ºF/Gas Mark 5.

A NEW Asda store is planned as part of a £20-million revamp of the Abbey Wood Retail Park at Filton An estimated 400 jobs will be created through the upgrade, which will involve demolishing one of two terraces of shops on the site between the Ministry of Defence procurement complex and Filton Abbey Wood railway station.

The park is also close to where Bristol Rovers hopes to build a new 20,000-seater stadium on scrubland between the University of the West of England’s Frenchay campus and the MoD. The building to be knocked down – the southern terrace – used to house the Woolworths store before the company disappeared from the high street more than two years ago.

The rest of the rank was occupied until recently by discount store TJ Hughes until the company went into liquidation, with the loss of nearly 60 jobs at the Filton site alone.

Filton’s very own brass band, Filton Concert Brass, showed why they have been beating northern bands at their own game recently.

In a varied programme from Dvorak to Grease - the band showed they are not only a fine ensemble, but their individual players are pretty special too.

Filton’s older residents had the opportunity to see a production of a popular musical theatre production that warns the audience about conmen and bogus callers.

The Solomon touring theatre company performed their highly acclaimed musical “Trickster” at Filton Community Centre to an audience of over 60 people.

Based on a true story the production, designed for older people, follows the story of George, once a proud soldier, as he battles against conmen and beats the bogus callers.

Having been conned by someone posing as a worker

from one of the utilities George is too ashamed to tell anyone what had happened, but in the end he told a friend and his wife who called the police in. This event is an excellent way of passing the message to our older residents not to open the door to unexpected visitors, whilst still having an enjoyable time at a relaxed and friendly event.”

At the end of the show Filton’s Police Sergeant Steve Ives introduced a number of experts from utilities and organisations who were all there with advice and assistance to share with the public.

FilTEEN life at 14 in Filton Returning to school. For most teenagers, this was the nightmare at the end of the summer, just thinking about going back to lessons with your annoying teacher who picks his nose, and shouts at you when you laugh at him!

For me though, going back to school wasn’t all bad.

I was starting my GCSE option courses, and getting told about work experience.

It was great to catch up with friends and to learn that James’ mum has finally given him his Xbox back, after 6 months. (He said his ‘disagreement’ with his brother was only a bit of banter!) Also, it was fun to see the new Year 7s panic when we gave them the wrong directions. It was even funnier to see them getting told off for walking into an A-Level exam, while we Year 10s laughed from afar!

The only downside was the lessons and the teachers!

Why don’t we take flu more seriously?

A stark statistic from the Department of Health this week showed that nearly 90 per cent of people said they would get holiday vaccinations for tropical diseases, but only half of younger age groups who were advised to get the seasonal flu jab took it up last year.

Whilst holiday jabs are very important, it is also extremely important for all pregnant women, the over 65s and younger people with a serious health condition (such as diabetes, or a heart or lung condition) to get their flu jab before we enter the flu season. Yet millions of people play Russian roulette every year and don’t get vaccinated.

Perhaps people don’t realise just how serious flu can be. For those people who are at risk, flu can land you in hospital. Sadly, it can even kill.

Last year, 602 people died with flu in the UK. 70 per cent of those deaths were young and middle aged people aged 15-64 years. GPs in South Glos are now offering a free flu jab to the over 65s and younger people at risk. A 5-minute appointment could save your life.

Filton gardening ... with Pip Dixon October: bulbs for naturalising A lot of people are unsure of what the exact meaning of naturalising is so I will do my best to explain.

Most bulbs we sell are perennial, meaning they will come back for several years without the need of protection or replanting; our Dutch bulb growers consider a bulb that comes back for at least three years to be perennial and if the bulb not only comes back but multiplies itself many times over every year then it is considered to naturalize well. So it basically means the plant establishes itself without the need for us to separate it or to replant it.

Here is a list of some of the best bulbs for naturalising: • Aconitum (Winter Aconite) • Allium Sphaerocephalon (Drumstick Allium) • Cammasia (Wild Hyacinths) • Chionodoxa (Glory of the Snow) • Crocus (PICTURED)

• Cyclamen • Fritillaria Meleagris (Snakeshead Fritillary) • Galanthus (Snowdrops) • Hyacinthoides (Bluebells) • Ipheion Uniflorum (Spring Starflower) • Iris Histrioides Reticulata (Bulbous Iris) • Muscari (Grape Hyacinths) • Narcissus (Daffodils) • Scilla Siberica (Siberia Squil)

For the best results these bulbs should be planted in an area that can remain undisturbed so the foliage does not get prematurely removed. It is very important that the bulbs are allowed to die back naturally (this can take up to 8 weeks). If you are growing bulbs in an area of a lawn the grass cannot be cut for a number of weeks.

It is important to feed your

bulbs with a well-balanced slow release fertilizer such as Vitax Q4. This should be applied when the foliage is dying down as the bulb itself acts as a store for nutrients that it will feed off the next spring. I would avoid Bone Meal when planting new bulbs as it is a very attractive smell for your pet dog and they can quickly undo your hard work by digging them up!

The majority of naturalising bulbs do well in all soil types - the most important thing is good drainage. This is key as if the bulb gets too wet, especially during winter, it can rot. If you have a heavy clay soil it is essential that the drainage is improved over time before planting bulbs, and adding peat, compost, composted bark or grit will help.
