Local advertising in filtonvoice works Many thanks to everyone who has offered such positive feedback about your monthly magazine. “

I have used FiltonVoice from the very first issue to advertise our FACS (Friends of Abbeywood Community School) events. At our car boot sale on 19th May we asked people coming through the door how they had heard of the event and the vast majority said it was because they’d seen it in FiltonVoice. They also commented on what a great magazine it is. I shall continue using the magazine to advertise our fundraising events. Many thanks. Jeanne Clements (FACS)

Recently I had a problem with my double glazed front door. The lock had jammed, and I was unable to open it. I contacted a local locksmith and was told that it would be impossible to repair the lock, and the only solution would be a new door, costing in the region of £600 – 700, and would take at least a week as the door would have to be made. Not convinced that this was the only solution, I contacted DGR Windows, as advertised in your magazine. The gentleman visited the same day and was sure the problem could be fixed. He returned the following day with the necessary parts, and the problem was solved at a cost of £250. The work was carried out in a friendly and professional manner, and I cannot praise

At Dream Doors we have been so impressed with filtonvoice. We have had several enquiries in the short period we have been advertising. But in addition, we are happy and proud to be associated with such a high quality publication – it is well written, well designed and it is probably the best local magazine we have seen. The monthly distribution through letterboxes means that the customers we are trying to reach will read our message and the fact that the magazine is so good means we know people will not throw it away. Keep up the good work! Loretta, Dream Doors

Inspectors’ backing for new regime at secondary Abbeywood Community School has made ‘good, positive steps forward’, at the end of a troubled year, its executive head teacher has said. Dave Baker, who was asked to step in after the sudden resignation of previous head Ann Duff in the autumn, has undertaken a thorough review of every aspect of the school. The school was put in special measures in December but by then the inspectors had acknowledged Mr Baker’s stated ‘draconian’ regime was paying dividends. Now a monitoring visit by Ofsted has said the school is now making satisfactory progress. Mr Baker said this was as high a rating it could achieve at this stage until GCSE exam results come in. He said the predicted grades for A*-C including English and Maths were expected to rise to above 50% from 41% last year. For A*-C not including English and Maths, the pass rate was expected to be 74%, up from 58% last year. According to the inspectors, “the proportion of good or better teaching has increased significantly since the previous inspection. “This reflects the strong focus on improving the quality of teaching using both internal and external support together with regular monitoring by senior and middle leaders. “Since his appointment, the Executive Headteacher has made rapid improvements to the school’s provision and systems, although the impact of the changes on outcomes is not yet secure. “A new behaviour management strategy was developed with clear expectations for attitudes, conduct, punctuality and appearance. “Mobile telephones were no

longer allowed to be used in school. This increased level of expectation for behaviour required all staff to work together and this whole-school approach has led to improvement. “Students, staff and the governing body recognise his very strong contribution to the development of the school during what has been a turbulent period.” The inspectors said that there had been a rise in fixed term exclusions as a result of the new expectations. Mr Baker, who shares his duties as head at Abbeywood with his role as head of Bradley Stoke Community School, said: “We are creating conditions for learning and cutting down on the behavioural attitudes which were causing problems. “For example we banned mobile phones during the day, cracked down on non-uniform items and ensured bags are put in cubby holes in the room. “All of these things can cause distractions but if dealt with, give the teacher the opportunity to focus on teaching. “Around 70% of lessons were observed as good or outstanding during monitoring “What we have seen is that even children resistant to our new draconian ways have accepted that there has been a big difference and from the teachers’ point of view, they have more confidence to teach. “Our next step is to raise further the aspirations of staff and students.” Mr Baker added that he had received support from parents for ‘steadying the ship’. The school is currently going through the process of becoming an academy as part of the Olympus Trust which includes Bradley Stoke Community School.

Workers are invading our

“

The amount of parking spaces available for staff at NBT is relatively high compared with other hospitals but this is a finite number, as is the case with any hospital or city based business site. Permits are issued according to where members of staff live and what their job role requires of them. For example someone who lives close to the hospital and works regular hours will be a lower priority than someone who lives a longer distance away for whom driving to work is the only option. There are various extenuating circumstances. For example if staff have disabilities or mobility issues, work night shifts, are required to leave the site several times each week, have young children or are carers, then they will be a higher priority for a permit. The amount payable for a parking permit is directly proportionate to individual salaries and those members of staff who have been allocated a permit pay 0.5 percent of their basic salary towards this. Recently an additional section of parking for staff with permits opened in our new multi-storey car park and in addition to the provision across the Southmead site we provide more spaces at BAWA - less than 10 minutes’ walk away. The pressure on parking spaces would still remain whether we implemented a paid-for permit system or not. We ask our staff to park considerately and responsibly on public roads. We work with our neighbours to try to address their concerns and would ask them to contact us should they have issues they wish to raise. Simon Wood, director of facilities, North Bristol NHS Trust

Kenmores situation getting ‘worse and worse’ A consultation has been launched in Filton Park after furious residents highlighted the problem of Southmead Hospital staff parking in their streets and destroying grass verges. People living in Kenmore Drive and Crescent told a public meeting that hospital authorities has “missed a great opportunity to plan out the parking in the area” and that residents were in despair of a situation which was getting “worse and worse”. One resident told the Safer Stronger Filton meeting that the simple problem was that “people in Bristol love their cars” and no alternative green polices, such as encouraging cycling, were going to change that. North Bristol Trust Director of Facilities Simon Wood told the meeting: “Staff are having to pay for parking to encourage other methods and (we have offered) incentives such as cycle maintenance and bus passes. “As a result, 25% of those who used to drive now do other things.” He also said that the 2,700 parking spaces planned were the maximum they were ever likely to be agreed by planners. Under the consultation, residents are being asked to give their views on three schemes: • Option 1 - No waiting at any time (i.e. double yellow lines) at junctions on the Kenmores and Braemar Avenue; • Option 2 - No waiting and limited waiting as a more extensive scheme on the same streets. • Option 3 - No waiting and

residents’ parking with permits on the same streets. There has been nothing suggested for streets beyond this area although there are fears that the problem could be simply shifted into other parts of Filton Park and Filton more generally. Filtonvoice understands that a demand for action in other parts of Filton Park could follow more quickly as a result of the process. One resident of Southmead Road told Filtonvoice that a health worker parks outside her house almost every day, making it hard for her to get out of her driveway into the busy traffic. A South Gloucestershire spokesperson said: “Local residents in the Kenmore Drive / Kenmore Crescent Area have expressed concerns with regard to the level of on-street parking which is causing congestion and access problems. “As a result of these concerns, a scheme to review parking in Filton was included in the 2012/2013 Local Transport Capital Programme. “It should be noted that Bristol City Council have recently introduced waiting restrictions within their boundary whilst South Gloucestershire Council are now reviewing the on-street parking in the Kenmore area. “The purpose of this (proposed) scheme is to discourage all day commuter parking particularly where this causes safety or access issues, whilst minimising the impact of any new waiting restriction scheme on local residents.”

Residents in Filton living opposite the MoD complex at Abbey Wood say they are being invaded by office workers who leave vehicles in the narrow cul-de-sacs. This is the second major parking issue connected to a large employer to affect Filton following the problems faced by residents in Kenmore Drive and Crescent who say their roads are repeatedly used by Southmead Hospital staff. Station Road, New Road, Pilkington Close and The Sidings are regularly congested with cars left by MoD staff, meaning residents find it difficult to get in and out. Recently bin lorries have been forced to turn away, meaning collections were not made, and there are fears that an emergency vehicle would not be able to drive down the street. Problems have escalated in recent weeks since roadworks began and now residents are demanding some kind of traffic controls to ensure office workers don’t use the streets as a car park. Ken Hoare, who lives in The Sidings, said: “It’s a major issue round here and we can’t get our cars out during the day due to the MoD staff parking. “There has been abuse from some of the MoD staff and we have been forced to put out cones to try to stop them parking.” Mr Hoare said he has also tried putting notes on windscreens but to no avail. He also said that the problem was likely to increase with a new Asda and Bristol Rovers stadium proposed nearby, along with expansion of college places. Mr Hoare said he understood the MoD had policies which meant those who live within three miles of the complex were expected to use alternative forms or transport and were barred from the staff car park but he said it was impossible to control what they did outside the boundaries of the complex. At a meeting of Safer and Stronger Filton, local councillors said that the three hour limit at the Abbey Wood retail park had displaced many commuters.

streets - angry residents Residents’ viewpoints As a resident of Pilkington Close I have recently had to acquire a mobility scooter & I need to come down the path on my side of the road to my house no 3. I need to have full width of the pathway to turn into my gate with shopping. This side of the road is usually blocked with cars from the MOD. The bottom part of the road and the far side of the road has always been parking for local residents making it hard for service access into the road with all the extra traffic. C Rex Taylor

Residents Ken Hoare and Jenny Small highlight the problems in Station Road and inset, The Sidings A meeting has been arranged between local councillors, police, MoD and other agencies in an

attempt to resolve the problem as soon as possible. Filtonvoice made repeated

attempts to speak to the MoD but no response was given as we went to press.

It is vital that residents make their voice heard I have been working with the residents of Kenmore Drive and Crescent for a number of months to try to find a solution to parking problems mainly caused by the actions of Bristol CC installing yellow lines in the roads surrounding Southmead Hospital, including Kenmore Drive up to the South Glos boundary. Inevitably this moved the parking from Bristol into the Kenmores. It is really good news that we have reached the point of consulting on options to try to solve the problems in the Kenmores, which is essential, but also that surrounding streets are being consulted. Whilst it will be a step forward if we can resolve the situation in the Kenmores, I think that it is very likely that the problem will probably move to other streets in Filton Park. As a consequence,

other roads/streets have been included in the consultation. It is however important that everyone who has received a letter gives the council their views on what might happen in the future. Do you think that the problem will move to your road? What sort of solutions, similar to those being suggested in the Kenmores, might you accept? I have been keen to ensure that the consultation for the wider area is included in this current traffic management review, so that it can be dealt with sooner rather than later. The problem at the moment is that schemes cannot be drawn up for consultation when the problem isn’t currently there, but the views of those who might be affected are crucial to planning the work should problems arise. So please respond to the

consultation and consider the options for your roads, including the resident only (permit parking) option. In addition to the Filton Park problem I have been very conscious of the issues surrounding the MoD and the waiting restrictions implemented at the Abbeywood Retail Park, which is causing problems in a wide area including parts of Stoke Park and Stoke Gifford. As a consequence, a multiagency meeting has been organised to involve not only South Glos cllrs but also local town/parish councils, Safer and Stronger reps, South Glos officers, MoD and police. As the traffic management review continues over the next few months, other parts of Filton where problems have been identified will be consulted on. Cllr Roger Hutchinson

People don’t care and leave their cars from 8am until 10pm at times. I’ve had enough and something has got to be done! Residents’ permits are definitely needed! Come on, let’s all get together and get someone to do something! Matthew We are also having terrible problems with cars being parked and left in The Sidings, New Road and Pilkington Close in Filton. Please sign the petition. http://www.ipetitions. com/petition/doubleparking-the-sidings-filton/ Alan

South Glos U-turn on land grab at Filton roundabout South Glos Council has abandoned its plans to take land at Elm Park to create an extra lane on the ring road at Filton roundabout. The scheme was to be funded by money from the Southmead Hospital redevelopment but residents and councillors locally said they did not want Elm Park to be affected. There was anger at public meetings that the town council was given a very short window of time in which to make a decision about the scheme. There were also concerns that the scheme would have limited value since the traffic would still be feeding into single lanes on Gloucester Road North and Southmead Road. In a letter to Filton town councillors, principal engineer

Mark Shearman said: “After careful consideration the council has decided to progress an alternative scheme that brings some capacity benefits on the Ring Road approach to Filton roundabout but which does not require any land-take. “In addition, subject to agreement with the hospital

developers we will propose new 20mph speed limits and cycle infrastructure improvements on other routes to the hospital, all of which should deliver improvements in support of access to the Southmead Hospital development. “The council would like to thank Filton Town Council for

its work in endeavouring to look at our options under such short timescales. “Filton Town Council will of course be involved in consultation with any new proposals.” Councillor Rikki Teml said: “I am delighted that South Glos council has decided to drop the scheme which included land within Elm Park. “This is a great result for the community in protecting our green space. “We can now continue with the exciting garden project with no road development hanging over our head. “I hope this has been a learning lesson for all involved and that proper consultation takes place with a proper time frame going forward.”

Town Council: Adam Monk, chair of the town council, was re-elected to the position for another term. Councillor Darryl Collins was also re-elected as vice-chair of the council.

Under new measures, the entire council will now sit on the influential finance committee, meaning decisions made by that committee will only need to be ratified at full council rather than discussed in full.

The day the Olympic torch came to Filton Picture special, pages 10, 11 and 12

Hundreds of people lined the streets of Filton in bright sunshine as the Olympic torch relay passed along Southmead Road on May 23. It was carried by 58-year-old Corinne Day, watched by families who cheered and took photographs. Houses were decked out in bunting and children waved flags as the procession went by. However some families said children were brushed aside as crowds surged forward to get a close look at the torch. Lit from the sun’s rays at the Temple of Hera in Olympia, Greece, the Olympic Flame arrived in the UK on 18 May 2012. Representing peace, unity and friendship, the Flame is being carried by 8,000 torchbearers during the Olympic Torch Relay. The route was planned so that the Flame would come within ten miles of 95 percent of people in the UK. Letters: Pages 14&15

l Filton residents Doris Clifford and her daughter Mary Cullum have been crowned the winners in a competition to find the best decorated house on the Olympic Torch route. South Gloucestershire Council launched the competition to encourage residents living along the relay route to decorate their homes to welcome the Olympic Flame. Doris, who is 88, along with her daughter Mary were presented with a selection of Olympic Team GB goodies by Cllr Janet Biggin, Chairman of South Gloucestershire Council, for their brilliant efforts which included a lifesize image of the Queen, a torch and some medals. Mrs Clifford has lived in Southmead Road for 53 years after moving to Bristol from Cheshire in 1941 to play her part in the war effort. She said: “When we heard the torch was coming to our road we told everyone we were going to have a lovely view and Mary said we must do something. My theme was the royal balcony. “I have never had my photo taken so many times My husband would have loved it. He loved sport but died 23 years ago and I still miss him.”

Union official’s blast for council A top union official has delivered a damning verdict on “successive political administrations” at Filton Town Council. Steve Preddy, regional officer of Unite, said on an internet forum the council “failed to address the lack of staff structures, development of systems and effective management controls”. Mr Preddy said that his organisation was now working with Filton Town Council to correct “this anomoly”. This comes just two months after the union signed a training contract with the council, an arrangement Mr Preddy says is not connected to the issues of staff structures. He told Filton Voice last week that his comments related to previous administrations and that Unite was now working with the current council administration.

Filton Voice understands the union was called in by staff concerned about the clarity of their roles within the council. Mr Preddy said the union was called in after the previous leisure centre manager left, which prompted a look at the whole structure of the operation. He said: “We are working with the council to change the structures. The broad thrust of the work is good and now needs to be speeded up. “Staff have not had clear roles and definitions (in the workplace). “My involvement was prompted at the request of the majority of staff at Filton, who are Unite members, unhappy and or uneasy about the potential for change and the impact upon them. “Unite hopes that the net outcome of these joint efforts,

will be to provide staff with better training, better communication lines, more effective management structures and therefore place them in a position, of being better able to provide quality services to the people of Filton and the surrounding area. “The staff, far from being phased by the opportunities provided through, quality training for personal development plus fair and objective management controls, are actually seeking the progression of these proposals and are not resistant as is claimed by those who seek to mislead.” “Treating working people with dignity and respect, providing appropriate levels of training, as well as fair, concise leadership throughout an organisation,

are surely basic qualities people should expect in any workplace.” Mr Preddy said the union was now working with both Labour and Conservative councillors to seek a way forward. Several contributors to online discussion forums have questioned why the union is only now getting involved. Adam Monk, chairman of Filton Town Council, said: “Councillors from all parties working with the staff at Filton Town Council have undertaken a number of initiatives. “One of these is addressing the staffing structure and identifying roles and responsibilities. “Clearly as part of this exercise we have met with the union and the staff to achieve this.”

Seeking a chess club

I was just browsing through the filtonvoice and was reminded of a question long at the back of mind....”Does Filton have a chess club?” If you know of one could you please send me details. Anton Editor’s note: If anyone knows of a local chess club, please email richard@filtonvoice.co.uk and we will pass the details to Anton. Filton roundabout

Opportunity missed

Ref. “Roundabout plans” May issue 8 in Filton Voice. Pat & Brian Smith are accurate in their comment about the ridiculously wide pavement at junction A38/ A4174. The planners had the ideal opportunity to widen that section of highway to replace the slip lane when the bridge was removed. There was sufficient width at that point to replace the lane which was removed when the “improvements” were made at the time of traffic lights installation. As was stated, South Glos planners have no idea of the problems they have caused and need to visit the sites and listen to locals. Peter Barnes, Filton resident l Do we really need more our our green land turned to concrete so more cars can queue at the roundabout at peak times? You would need a multiple of the 1/2 million on offer here from hospital development funds to alleviate any sort of traffic congestion by Elm Park. A new strip of concrete would just become a new queue to sit in. James Robertson Olympic torch

Anger at crowds

I was thrilled to hear that South Glos council had arranged reserved areas for the schools to see the Olympic Torch as it travelled along Southmead Road in Filton. Some schools even arrived by coach. All the kids were excited and were there at 7.30 and waited patiently.

What a brilliant plan, we were all thinking. I’m sorry to say though that all those efforts were in vain when at 9 o’clock hoards of people were allowed to walk down the middle of Southmead Road and plonk themselves

in front of all the kids with no consideration or challenge from authority whatsoever. The kids were crying and distraught. A once in a lifetime experience, destroyed just like that. People charged in and filled up all of one side of Southmead

Road. Crowd control was nonexistent. I thought there was but apparently today was their day off. The barriers were a waste of time and money. Once the crowd had started the influx everyone else surged forward. People were all over the road. In 5 minutes our children learned that if you want to win you have to be rude, inconsiderate and trample on the little people. To say that I and many of the parents there today are furious is an understatement. Explaining that behaviour to our children and consoling them over the fact they weren’t going to see the torch after all their patience and good behaviour was not a nice job for any of us. There is no way you can make this right, the experience has passed us all by and what a disappointing memory all our children have for the Olympics now. Julie Truckle l I was down by the BAWA end and stood at the back as I am tall. Once they let though the crowd onto the road I could not see a thing. Moved up the road a little and it was not too bad. Once the torch had stopped there was lots of the crowd running up the road to see it again and trying to touch the torch. This caused some elderly and young kids to be stuck in the middle of a big crowd looking uncomfortable. Shaun l Organisation was a joke. People who had waited patiently and got up early to get a good view were swamped by people turning up later and rushing into the road when the torch was close. Bob Thomas l @Bob Thomas – yes indeed. I was down at Southmead Road at about 7.35am. Hardly a soul around. The last minute wonders just stood in front of everyone who had been waiting patiently. I stood my ground from them – elbows and sheer presence helped. Still, it was funny to notice that the majority of those who were their for this Olympic event, that four yearly meeting of the world’s finest athletes, physical specimens, and fitness, were

greeted by the benefits claiming, over-weight, chain-smoking, too-small-a size-jogging-togswearing, pushchair-wheeling masses. Chris Ivory l I waited for an hour and a half right at the junction where it was due to stop before it shot off to Chippenham. All was fun, light hearted and enjoyable. Everyone was remarkably well behaved. Nobody pushed in front of anyone. Then something happened. The police switched off. They started to lose control of the crowd in response to their nonsensical manoeuvring to try and give everyone a view. Before we knew it the surging crowd then broke ranks and started filling the road. This crowd slowly came level with us. All our waiting was for nothing! The police just stood there and did nothing! They had 100% lost control. There was no way I was going to be pushed to the back so I had to join in. The snowball effect had started. The road flooded and all the kids were blocked off and pushed aside. But it had resorted to dog eat dog! A great morning ruined by incompetence! I really did feel for the polite ones amongst us. They never stood a chance, despite all their courteous waiting. Dave G Newleaze House

Uncertain future

The pending decision by Merlin Housing Society to consider changing the form of Newleaze House, Filton, at their Board meeting on June 14th could leave residents in some uncertainty for a five-year-long period. What had previously been a vigorous combination of talent and endeavours ... coupled with the odd grouse or two, - could degenerate into a “do nothing” scenario until it is known what is about to take place. Similarly with in-house events supporting charitable good causes. These are also on hold. The spirit to do something creative is currently in decline. Newleaze House has a long list of charities it has helped through endeavours at its regular

coffee mornings and it has brought several TV and radio celebrities to encourage them in what they do. Residents are patiently hoping that somehow Merlin might find some way around to “lift the gloom” and re-activate what many residents sincerely call “home.” Ever since 1960 when Newleaze House emerged on the scene it has comforted numerous residents who have enjoyed the “togetherness” which both themselves and their relatives have constantly praised. It seems also that birds have adopted the mood of the residents. They don’t fly around as much as they used to any more to capture the hand-outs from the residents which were always willingly given them. It has been said in various locations that the changes at Newleaze might take “five years” to complete. But in the meantime lies the uncertainty which is affecting all. What were attractive flower beds and borders are now encrusted with weeds. Residents took pleasure in attending their chosen plots and the lights of Christmas ... an outstanding achievement at Newleaze – might also be a “thing of the past.” All we can ask for at Newleaze is for those who are required to accept the inevitable ... a move to “pastures new” are treated sympathetically. Changes in the autumn of their years need to be carefully ... and sympathetically

... made or they will do irretrievable harm. Douglas Daniels, Filton Cllr Station Road parking

Action needed now

Re problems around Station Road area and MoD workers parking, I haven’t seen a petition yet but I would sign one. Basically we need to have the road marked access to residents only/private road, and if that won’t solve it then yellow lines, with residents given permits for themselves and visitors. I do think this is the fault of the council and that they have caused the problem by granting planning permission for developments that we don’t yet have the road/transport infrastructure for. Public Transport for locals in the area is unpleasant, takes too long, and is too expensive. I personally bought my house to be near work (MoD) and probably paid a premium for a house in this area. A lot of other people are in my situation where they have bought houses in the area to be near work and probably paid more for the privilege and are now being told that because they live within 3 miles of Abbey Wood they cannot park on site. Plus I believe that MoD are still trying to re-locate people from outside Bristol into Abbey Wood so they can close other

sites down. They are trying to pack us all in like sardines, we don’t even have enough desks, we have to book them 8 weeks in advance. Anyway besides that gripe, it is not MoD’s fault exactly because the council have restricted the parking spaces they can use. They’ve got the space but they aren’t allowed to have the parking spaces. A lot of staff travel in on train and cycle in, and MoD/Abbey Wood have got people car sharing etc. The traffic is still gridlocked in the area but it is not all MoD Abbey Wood people, it is traffic around Parkway, and the other nearby places. I am trapped in my house after I’ve walked home from work, I can’t go out. I have to wait until about 5.45pm before I can get out, as the traffic is terrible especially around parkway, on the way to Bradley Stoke. Going back to parking, yes MoD people are parking in the nearby streets, because the council have restricted parking at their place of work. It is a problem, especially when road works are being done. I’m also concerned about a lot of the other developments that are going up such as the colleges, as although they will have restricted parking, visitors and staff to the college will still drive in and park in the local streets. The colleges will also hold events at weekends and evenings too, so we’ll still have lots of parked cars. Name and address supplied

Important lesson about smoking

Students ‘cooking’ the contents of a cigarette Abbeywood Community School Health Promotion Project DECIPHer-ASSIST Research has shown that smoking among young people is a group activity and that one of the best predictors of a young person taking up smoking is their peers’ smoking behaviour in the previous six months. The DECIPHer-ASSIST programme aims to reduce smoking amongst young people aged 12-13 (Year 8) by training influential students to disseminate new norms of behaviour (non-smoking behaviour) through their established friendship networks. The Year 8 students of Abbeywood School identified 22 students to take part in this

project and to be trained as ‘peer supporters’. Funding from the Medical Research Council enabled the nominated students to take part in a two-day training event held at Baileys Court, Bradley Stoke. Back at school, the students are now receiving ongoing support from lead staff, Hannah and Sarah from South Gloucestershire LA. Hannah and Sarah come into school and meet with our peer supporters, give encouragement and advice where needed and provide valuable guidance on how to spread the word on ‘Facts about Smoking’. Many students will have noticed the new ‘Facts about Smoking’ posters that have appeared around school.

St Teresa’s Primary On Monday 28th and Tuesday 29th May St Teresa’s year 3, 4 and 5 class families performed The Wizard of Oz at The Olympus Theatre. The children really let their lights shine and gave the audience a real treat. The story followed Dorothy on her journey fro Kansas to the Land of Oz and back again. She met terrifying trees, meddling monkeys, quarrelsome crows, dancing flowers, not to mention a Wicked Witch. The lead role of Dorothy was played by Oliwia Makulec and she was supported by Glinda, Bethany Bacasnot; Scarecrow, Lara Mitchell; Tinman, Antonio Pereira-Vong; and Lion, Isaiah Kandemir. The children showed great commitment to all of their roles and this showed on both nights by fantastic feedback from the audience. The school has received emails and cards congratulating them all. South Gloucestershire Council is about to say ‘you’re hired’ to a number of young apprentices thanks to a new partnership being struck with a local college. Over the next four years, South Gloucestershire Council will work with a college coordinator from South Gloucestershire and Stroud College in Filton to recruit around 240 apprentices, or 60 a year. Ultimately, the aim is to have apprenticeship opportunities within key areas in which the council and its suppliers work. Examples include housing, care, catering, street services and horticulture, but there will be many others. The purpose is to create the best possible career start for young people, in line with national policy to support apprenticeship opportunities for those aged 16 – 24 years old. Cllr John Goddard said: “This is a fantastic new scheme which is being launched thanks to a partnership forged with South Gloucestershire and StroudCollege. Apprenticeships can be a stepping stone for young people to break the cycle

WORKING of long-term unemployment while learning new skills to equip them with a better chance of securing a job in the future. Apprentices will not only work for the council, but we will be able to offer practical help to our suppliers to encourage them to find openings in their businesses to accommodate our young people.” Kevin Hamblin, principal of South Gloucestershire and Stroud College, said: “We have very capable young people within South Gloucestershire who will make the most of these opportunities. It is a

great career start for them and will allow them to make a real contribution to their community.” How does it work? Apprenticeships are work-based training programmes for those aged 16 plus. Apprentices will have a contract of employment and will be supported to gain the relevant qualifications through on-the-job learning, workplace support and college attendance. Thought for the month Just a few weeks ago, on a perfect, warm and sunny, early summer morning, the Olympic Torch passed through Filton on its countrywide tour. What a great morning that was. Many houses along the route were transformed by bunting and flags, and so many people, both young and old, came onto the streets in the warm sunshine to experience the fun and excitement. It was as though, just for a couple of hours, we could forget all our problems and the bad news we are bombarded with, and celebrate being a community again, with people taking together and laughing together and caring for one another, something which maybe has been sadly lost over the years. We have also just been celebrating another great

with Rev Elspeth Desmond, St Peter’s Church, Filton event, the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. Not such perfect weather this time - the Queen stood for four hours in freezing rain for the river pageant but nevertheless, the rain did nothing whatsoever to diminish a phenomenally stirring demonstration of all that it is to be British. The next day, at the amazing concert, she was there, radiant as ever despite her husband, the Duke of Edinburgh, being admitted to hospital earlier that day. When she was in her early twenties, The Queen said in a radio braodcast that “whether

her life be long or short” she would pledge her whole life to duty and service, and for 60 years she has made good that vow. As the Archbishop of Canterbury reminded us in the service from St Paul’s Cathedral, the Jubilee was the anniversary of a public act of dedication and commitment. May her spirit of selflessness, duty and service to others inspire us and be a challenge to us in our lives and in our communities. With the rain, with her husband not at her side, The Queen did indeed bring alive the slogan of what it means to

be British ... “Keep Calm and Carry On”! She is an example to us all and may she indeed be “long to reign over us”.

A feature on St Peter’s cafe was due to be published this month but due to technical issues with photographs it will again have to be held over until next month. Our apologies to all concerned

Bus shelter row: A Filton councillor and a local activist have clashed again over the new bus stop planned for the A38 opposite the Springfield elderly people’s home. The shelter has been subject to several delays but was expected to be installed on May 28. However a meeting of the town council heard that it had been delayed again by the manufacturer, prompting an angry exchange between Filton resident Brian Smith and South Glos councillor Roger Hutchinson. Mr Hutchinson helped secure South Glos funding for the shelter but Mr Smith said that had the money come from Filton Town Council, the shelter would have already been erected. Mr Smith said: “It’s been two years and three months now we’ve been waiting - it’s a disgrace.” Mr Hutchinson said: “I’ve listened to this record many times now but it will happen.”

Mum’s buggy push to say thanks to charity

A Filton mum is organising a charity event for a baby charity to thank doctors and nurses after her own daughter, Amber, was born six weeks early. Kerry Robinson is supporting BLISS, the charity set up to support premature and sick babies and their families. She and other supporters are taking part in a 5km buggy push on June 23, starting at 10am at Bradley Stoke Leisure Centre. The charity will provide t-shirts and balloons for the event. Thankfully Amber is now a happy and healthy 10-month-old baby but Kerry wants to support the organisation after she was given help after Amber was born.

Kerry’s story

“

Amber was born on June 27th 2011, 6 weeks early due to my waters leaking at 32 weeks I was giving steroids to mature her lungs as doctors thought she could come at anytime Luckly she didn’t and I i was induced at 34 weeks as doctors agreed it was safer to be born at that time rather than risk waiting as this would increase the chance of infection. Amber was born weighing 5lb 4oz and taken straight to nicu at Southmead to help with her breathing, and put under ultra violet lights as she was badly jaundice. Amber came home a few weeks later and has done really well and is now a very happy and healthy 10 month old. I never expected to be in the position of having a premature baby especially as I had a full term son previously. It was an emotional rollercoaster and every day I feel so very lucky that Amber has done so well. Its not until you are in the position of being in nicu that you realise how many people go through that hard time and that’s where Bliss is so important. Bliss is the UK charity working to provide the best possible care and support for all premature and sick babies and their families. One in every 9 babies in the UK is born either premature or sick. That’s over 80,000 babies

every year with one being admitted to special care every six minutes. The vital care that babies receive after birth can have a profound impact on the rest of their lives. For families struggling to cope, this will be one of the most difficult, emotional and stressful times of their lives. Bliss is there to provide advice and support over the phone, through their message

board, their network of local councillors and local groups. The buggy push walk we are organising is a 5km sponsored walk around Three Brooks Nature Reserve and Bradley Stoke on 23rd June at 10am. To register and for more information please email kerryrobinson@hotmail.co.uk or search for event on facebook - ‘bliss buggy push fundraiser bristol’.

Business of the month

We meet Bradley Lane, who runs Quality Carpets, Gloucester Road North Name, age and how long you have been working in the flooring industry. My name is Bradley Lane. I started helping out a carpet fitter on Saturdays when I was 12 and I have been involved in the carpet industry ever since, I am now 44. Where are you from? I come from Horfield originally and I lived just up the road from the shop until I was in my twenties. What’s the best bit about the job? The best part about running a carpet shop is going to people’s homes and measuring for them, especially the OAPs who tell me their old war stories. Tell us what you offer to set yourselves apart from others. One of the things that set us apart from other shops in the area is that we offer a complete service to the old and disabled. We can take the carpet and vinyl samples to their homes for them to select from. Our team of fitters will remove furniture, uplift and dispose of old flooring, fit new flooring and return furniture to how the room was before. We find that this takes the stress away from the customer.

What do you think about the people of Filton? I find that being based in Filton is good because having been brought up around this area I have a lot in common with the people and when I’m out and about I run into a lot of people I know.

What are your plans for the future of the business? Our plans for the future are to expand deeper into soft furnishings. We have just started selling made to measure curtains and are looking to stock prepacked curtains and bedding in the near future.

This vampire’s quite a charmer ‘Vampires are the new sexy’ declared the programme of Bristol Opera’s latest production, although doubtless writers from Bram Stoker to Anne Rice and Joss Wheedon, creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer would beg to differ. Nevertheless, when it was written in 1828, Heinrich Marschner’s opera about a dissolute aristocrat and his attempts to slay three young brides was one of the very first times the vampire had been depicted not as a monster, but as a charming and charismatic man. Based on a story by Lord Byron’s personal physician, John Polidori, much of the

inspiration for the character of the anti-hero, Lord Ruthven, is derived from the famously ‘mad, bad and dangerous to know’ poet. The opera, set in 18th Century Scotland, opens with the Vampire Master’s unworldly entourage literally crawling out of primordial slime, presided over by the Master himself. He then sets the watching Lord Ruthven a challenge – to stalk three virgins on the eve of their weddings, bend them to his will and suck their blood. If he manages this within twentyfour hours, he will be granted another year of life. That this production, at

Deborah Harvey Filton’s Olympus Theatre on the Wise Campus, was staged at all is largely thanks to the detective work and creative skill of the Musical Director of Bristol Opera, Arne Kovac. It turns out that although the opera was quite a hit during the Marschner’s lifetime, for some reason all that survived in print were the vocal parts and an arrangement for a string quartet. Thanks to Kovac’s efforts, there now exists a full score, which was performed marvellously well by the Opera’s orchestra.

I’m afraid I’m a bit of a Philistine when it comes to opera. As someone whose passion is for words, I find the conventions of libretti frustrating – when they’re in English – whilst the requirement for the performers to be excellent singers first and foremost often requires an imaginative leap when it comes to the casting. Nevertheless, I did enjoy my evening at the Olympus Theatre and look forward to future productions by this talented local company. Deborah Harvey is a Filton poet and author.

l Questions have been raised at public meetings in Filton over the ‘for sale’ signs at Filton Police Station. The site is due to be sold when officers move to a new station in Patchway in 2014 but there was concern that by marketing the station, Avon and Somerset Force was looking to move out of Filton earlier. News feature A touch of the exotic in Dorset Doug Daniels enjoys the sub-tropical gardens at Abbotsbury near Weymouth during a recent excursion with Filton Garden Club Amidst all the lovely gardens in England there are none more attractive than the exotic subtropical garden at Abbotsbury near Weymouth in Dorset. TV gardening celebrity, Alan Titchmarsh formed that opinion when he made a private visit declaring it “one of the best he had ever seen.” Situated close to the famed Chesil Bank Beach, Abbotsbury lies close to Bridport and enjoys a sheltered location beneath a steep bank enjoying a fair share of sunshine. This was the chosen venue of Filton Garden Club recently when 39 of their members added it to their growing itinerary of delightful gardens to see. Stopping off en route at the Fleet Air Arm base at Yeovilton they enjoyed their splendid eatery on what was a journey in conditions that were far from ideal. There was drizzle and misty weather, which on the face of it was far removed from what you would require to see lovely gardens. Yet, on arrival, Abbotsbury was attractive in any kind of weather. It was that kind of location that simply invites you to don something suitable and explore it to the full ... regardless. Comprising a succession of winding paths and tiny bridges spanning diminutive streams it reveals exotic settings where plants and foliage of exotic origin are gloriously displayed. It places statuettes of various well-known people in curious nooks and corners. Your interest is captured all along the way. It had a Colonial touch. Even the delightful cosy restaurant fitted the scene perfectly ... it was called the “Colonial Café”! But it was the counter assistant who sprang the greatest surprise. Her name was “Laura.” ... Yes, I got as far as that. Originating locally she knew Bristol and Filton as much as we did. She attended as a student at UWE. Sadly we had to miss the steep climb to the renowned Swannery. It was too risky to approach in the weather conditions. It is

home for 600 ... Yes, 600 swans who are fed daily at certain hours. In the hatching season visitors have to tread warily to avoid treading on their fluffy cygnets. This was a visit I just couldn’t miss. Another superb offering by Pat and Brian Smith and their beloved Garden Club. Thanks also to Mike the driver, from Anicks Travel. It was a visit to long remember. For Filton Garden Club details ring 0117 975 9126

Filton GC’s Geoff Anderson speaks about his personal reasons for backing autism charity

Why my role as captain is about so much more than just golf It’s looking like a busy year for Geoff Anderson. The 2012 captain of Filton Golf Club has a non-stop schedule of matches, meetings and occasions where he is the public face of the club. Geoff, who worked at BAC before joining the police force, delights in describing the wonderful traditions associated with the club. He laughs as he points to the bell in the clubhouse: when he, as captain, rings it, all in the room must be silent. Yet his golfing life was not always so grand. His first experience at the Filton club was as a caddie at the age of 12, when the demanding senior players - who were always looking for a scapegoat when a shot went wrong - paid him the grand sum of two shillings a round. Things are different now and Geoff is clearly proud to have such an important role in this well-regarded club. In amongst all his hectic timetable of golf fixtures and functions, he is determined that his chosen charity for the year

is the big winner - and he has personal reasons driving him on. Geoff, a former head of CID in South Gloucestershire and North Bristol, is giving his backing to the National Autism Society, after his grandson was diagnosed with the condition. Speaking at the magnificent clubhouse at the end of Golf Course Lane, he said: “Deciding to support NAS was not difficult for my wife Karen and I as our six-year-old grandson Tyler is autistic and we have seen first hand how their behaviour can be misunderstood and how society can sometimes view them as a lost cause. “Fortunately Tyler has received special support in his primary school which has had a tremendous effect on his progress. Others, however, get nothing like the level of help they need and there’s so much misunderstanding about autism and what it actually means to live with the condition. “Raising awareness is also critical in ensuring both that those with autism are able to live relatively independent lives and

that those who require a lifetime of support receive it.” Geoff, with the support of Karen and friends, is running various events throughout the year including a charity golf competition on June 23, sponsored by Bristol Audi, a family open day in September and an Autumn Ball in November, supported by Tortworth Court.

Any individuals or businesses wishing to attend or support the events should contact Geoff at the club on 0117 969 4169. Sam Van Niekerk, head of events fundraising at NAS, said: “Thanks to our fantastic supporters, who take part in various events throughout the year, the NAS is able to provide support to people with autism, their families and carers.”

Book of the month with Chloe England Teenager’s book Finding Sky, by Joss Stirling Adopted English girl Sky arrives at her new American high school, where she is the new girl desperate to fit in. This is where she meets Zed. Something is different about Zed he’s not like any others. As she gets lured into a drama, Secrets are revealed and her past catches up with her, could Zed be her soul mate… I really loved this book; I was hooked for 2 days! 2 days must not seem like a lot but that’s the great thing, you get so involved in the story you just want to keep reading until the end. You will only ever find out how amazing this book is if you read it. Great for young adults (12+). I would give this book a 4 star rating.

Young biker menace in Filton residential street Residents in Filton’s Eighth Avenue have expressed their anger over a lone motorcyclist who speeds along the quiet residential street. It is understood he reaches speeds of around 50mph but despite efforts by local people and the police, no action has been taken. A meeting of the Safer and Stronger Filton heard that despite the bollards in the street, the teenage biker has failed to stop speeding. The meeting heard that police have set up patrols in an attempt to catch him but without success so far. A Filtonvoice deliverer said he saw the biker speeding and residents tried to block off the top of the avenue with supermarket trolleys. Meanwhile road safety

officers in South Gloucestershire are urging Filton youngsters to take care when using mini and micro scooters, following a spate of road accidents involving the increasingly popular devices. Their warning comes as figures show that mini scooters were involved in each of the three most recent road accidents involving serious injury to children in South Gloucestershire. In 2011, serious accidents involving children using miniscooters occurred on Bradley Stoke Way, Bradley Stoke and Park Road, Thornbury. More recently, in February this year, a 10-year-old was seriously injured on Baileys Court Road while using a mini-scooter. The figures means that since 2008 there have been 10 recorded accidents – both serious

and non-serious – in South Gloucestershire involving young people using mini scooters. Council safety officers work closely with local schools to train children to use mini scooters safely on and near roads, and parents and teachers are being urged to contact the team to book sessions. The road safety team can be contacted on 01454 863 607 or via roadsafetyeducation@ southglos.gov.uk. Safe scootering advice includes: • Do not let your child scoot on the road or in traffic; • Beware of loose debris, gravel; • Children should wear bright or fluorescent clothing during the day and reflective materials in the dark; • Avoid steep inclines.

Local midwives help the world’s poorest Medical staff from Southmead Hospital’s maternity services have been selected for a volunteering scheme that will provide training on life-saving healthcare to medical workers in some of the world’s poorest countries, International Development Secretary Andrew Mitchell has announced. Skilled health professionals from across Britain will teach and offer practical assistance to their counterparts in the developing world under the Government’s Health Partnership Scheme. Over four years, the flagship programme will: • Train 13,000 overseas healthcare workers across many disciplines, including trauma

care, mental health, anaesthesia, and maternal and child health; • Support 142 skilled British healthcare volunteers for 6 months or over; and • Enable 600 UK healthcare workers to volunteer overseas on short term placements. British health workers will pass on their experience to colleagues in developing countries with practical ‘on the job’ training by demonstrating their skills on patients. They will also offer one-to-one mentoring, run courses and develop guidelines and protocols to ensure clinics run more effectively. A team of obstetricians and midwives from the South West set up the PROMPT Maternity

Foundation in 2010 from Southmead Hospital to deliver training in safe maternity care to organisations across the UK and the world. The PROMPT team, whose work with other organisations is funded through charitable grants and donations, have already rolled out their training to maternity units in countries like Egypt, the Pacific Islands,

Australia and New Zealand. The Health Partnership Scheme has awarded PROMPT £30,000 over two years to continue their work with a maternity hospital in Zimbabwe. Dr Joanna Crofts, an obstetrician at Southmead Hospital, said: “This new partnership scheme will allow us to continue to develop our links with Mpilo Hospital, Zimbabwe.”

The new Dreamscheme project in Filton took place throughout March and April 2012. Filton Dreamscheme worked with local children and young people aged 8 – 16 to develop creativity and break down barriers. It resulted in a fantastic new mural on the side of the leisure centre. Dreamscheme is based on a simple concept of WORK earn POINTS get REWARDS. Young people are enabled to carry out community based work projects for which they earn points. These can then be exchanged for trips and activities of their choice. Filton Dreamscheme aimed to meet the following outcomes: • Enable creativity. • Develop practical skills in creative artwork and painting. • Work better with each other and with adults. • Promote community cohesion and break down barriers between different groups. • Increase confidence. • Promote a positive view of children and young people in Filton. • Promote a healthy and active lifestyle amongst residents. • Publicise what goes on in Filton Leisure Centre. • Encourage multi agency partnership working in Filton.

41

Three separate meetings were arranged with the head or community link worker at each primary school in Filton to discuss Dreamscheme and identify young people from each school to take part. • Four young people were identified from Charborough Road School • Five young people were identified from Filton Hill School • Four children were identified from Shield Road School • Four young people were identified from St Andrew’s Methodist Youth Centre Various meetings were held to discuss the project, including a tour of the site leading to the mural project on April 2 and 3. The reward at the end was a trip to Weston-super-Mare, equivalent to £20 per person. The youth workers, volunteers and young people met at Parkway Station where they caught a train down to WSM. Each person received £5 credit to spend on the pier and enjoyed fish and chips for lunch on the beach. The group ended the day with a game of bowling at WSM bowling alley before an icecream/lolly on their walk back to the train station. Katie Donovan

Council shake-up South Gloucestershire councillors have adopted a new council constitution introducing a committee system and replacing the previous leader and cabinet arrangements. Now, the majority of council decisions will be taken by 10 committees, made up of elected members drawn from the council’s political parties. Committee members will be allocated according to the political make-up of the council, and the political groups have confirmed their appointments to each committee. Committees will have full authority to make decisions relating to their areas, while full Council will remain the forum for determining major policy issues including council tax. Full details of appointments will be published on the council website at www.southglos.gov.uk

Filton twinning group in appeal for hosts

Filton Twinning Association is over 37 years old - being the first parish council in England to twin with a French town. YOU may say “What is a Twinning”. Towns & schools were encouraged to form links with towns in France & Germany to foster understanding of each other cultures and traditions, and to promote friendships through exchanges. Meeting new friends, hosting, being hosted and of course the opportunity of travelling to our Twin Towns St Vallier-sur-Rhone, France, and Witzenhausen, Germany both very pleasant towns in very beautiful areas of France and Germany, are all part of it. Being a host also brings

rewards. Perhaps you have lived in Bristol for most of your life, but showing your visitors your home town, Bristol suddenly opens up to places you may never have gone before. This year 4th -10th August, we are hosting visitors from both our twin towns , and we NEED YOU to help! I am desperately endeavouring to find new host families. As our membership becomes older and with illness and annual holidays, I have found that I still require help with hosting. During this week, Filton Twinning has organised a varied programme, which includes dances. meals, two coach trips etc, which you of course, if hosting, you are

welcome to attend. If you are interested in hosting please email carole. duckett@caduce.plus.com or telephone 0117 9865350 just as quickly as possible. It would be with great sadness if I have to write to the committees of our twin towns, advising that some of those wishing to visit are unable to make the trip due to lack of hosts. I very much look forward to receiving either an email or telephone call from YOU. I can almost guarantee you will enjoy the experience - plus of course you could then make a visit to Witzenhausen, when we visit in 2013. Carole Duckett Hospitality Officer.

The Filtones Choir will celebrate its 30th anniversary with a concert featuring leading young musician Julia Hwang. The concert, at St Gregory the Great Church on Filton Road, will raise money for two charities - “SHINE” (relating to Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus) and “Singing for the Brain” which is an activity of the Alzheimer’s Society. Spokesperson Dorothy Bryant said: “This concert will be in St Gregory the Great Church because, with the generosity of Julia Hwang, an extremely accomplished young violinist, who recently featured on “Young Musician of the Year” who has offered her services to perform free for the concert, we are expecting a good deal of interest for this event. “An invitation has been extended to our new Lord Mayor of Bristol, Councillor Peter Main, together with Bristol North West MP Charlotte Leslie.”

Choir and guest soloist delight in equal measure Bristol Male Voice choir’s annual concert is always one of the highlights of the year. This year’s event was held on 19th May at St Alban’s, Redland for the second year running, attracting a good and responsive audience. The choir, conducted by Steve Daykin, included many favourites in a varied programme. The choir’s first part was made up of well known hymns starting with “Llanfair”, followed by “How Great Thou Art”, “Just a Closer Walk with Thee” and finally “Cwm Rhonda”. Part two was in a lighter vein, opening with “All in the April Evening”, “The Rose”, “My Love is Like a Red Red Rose” and “What shall we do with the Drunken Sailor”. Following the interval we were entertained with “King of Swing”, “Blue Moon” and Lenard Cohen’s classic “Hallelujah”. The final part from the choir was again from the popular music field with “You are so beautiful

(with The Wind Beneath My Wings)”, “Angels”, “You Raise Me Up” and then “Bohemian Rhapsody”. The organisers of the annual concert never fail to invite a superb soloist and this year was no exception, with the appearance of 24 year old Samoan-born tenor Darren Pene Pati. In 2009 he won the most prestigious contest

in Australasia, The Sydney Eisteddford Macdonalds Aria, formerly known as the Sydney Sun Aria. Pene sings with a beautiful tenor voice and shows no effort while performing, a great voice to look out for in the future. In his first session Pene sang arias from” La Traviata”, “Fuaste” and “Rigolleto” and in the second half he sang some Italian repertoire, including the

well known “Nesun Dorma” from Turandot and with his own guitar accompaniment his encore was the big favourite, particularly the song made famous by Pavarotti, “O Sole Mio”. Then for the grand finale Pene joined with the Bristol Male Voice Choir to sing” We’ll Never Walk Alone” ending a most enjoyable annual concert for another year. Roger Hutchinson
