Local advertising in filtonvoice works Many thanks to everyone who has offered such positive feedback about your monthly magazine. And it is YOUR magazine ... a place to find out things about our community and have your say. For businesses, it’s a great - and affordable - chance to get your message out to 12,000+ people locally.

“

I have used FiltonVoice from the very first issue to advertise our FACS (Friends of Abbeywood Community School) events. At our car boot sale on 19th May we asked people coming through the door how they had heard of the event and the vast majority said it was because they’d seen it in FiltonVoice. They also commented on what a great magazine it is. I shall continue using the magazine to advertise our fundraising events. Many thanks. Jeanne Clements (FACS)

Recently I had a problem with my double glazed front door. The lock had jammed, and I was unable to open it. I contacted a local locksmith and was told that it would be impossible to repair the lock, and the only solution would be a new door, costing in the region of £600 – 700, and would take at least a week as the door would have to be made. Not convinced that this was the only solution, I contacted DGR Windows, as advertised in your magazine. The gentleman visited the same day and was sure the problem could be fixed. He returned the following day with the necessary parts, and the problem was solved at a cost of £250. The work was carried out in a friendly and professional manner, and I cannot praise

At Dream Doors we have been so impressed with filtonvoice. We have had several enquiries in the short period we have been advertising. But in addition, we are happy and proud to be associated with such a high quality publication – it is well written, well designed and it is probably the best local magazine we have seen. The monthly distribution through letterboxes means that the customers we are trying to reach will read our message and the fact that the magazine is so good means we know people will not throw it away. Keep up the good work! Loretta, Dream Doors

House will NOT be sold Merlin Housing Association will

‘No probe’ after councillor resigns from local party Filton’s Labour branch will not conduct an investigation after the town council’s chair of finance resigned from the group, citing the ‘moral’ issue of party members “talking behind residents’ backs” among the reasons. Bill Moore also told a finance committee meeting he felt bullied and subsequently not defended by some members of the party. Mr Moore, above, who has been widely praised for his work to cut costs at the council, will remain as chair of finance and

3

also as a Labour councillor but he will no longer attend Filton Labour branch meetings. Last month, he called for a vote of confidence in himself at a finance meeting, which was carried unanimously. At a meeting of the town council, branch chairman Councillor Brian Mead and district councillor Ian Scott refused to be drawn on the issue. Branch secretary and district councillor Roger Hutchinson said he had “asked Mr Moore a question and in no way could what happened between him and me be described as bullying. “I asked him a legitimate question and he gave an answer.

“As to the issue of talking about people in private the position is as I have stated, we discuss politics and take account of comments made by people on anything that arises as do all manner of organisations in our democracy. No investigation will be instigated by the branch as nothing as described and repeated by people in the press, who weren’t there so wouldn’t know, took place.” Local party member Brian Smith told a meeting of the council that he was unhappy with the way Mr Moore had been treated and he also resigned, saying he had been subject to verbal unpleasantness himself.

NOT be buying Conygre House, filtonvoice has been told. Former Filton councillor John Tucker told a meeting of the town council that Merlin had been in discussions with South Glos Council to buy the historic house. But Merlin have insisted that they have no plans to buy it now or in the future. The building was previously used by Merlin. Mr Tucker told the meeting “everyone in Conygre” knew about the ‘sale’, including councillors, and that a figure of £350,000 was being mentioned. But town council chairman Adam Monk said this was not the case and a Merlin spokesperson said: “Merlin Housing Society has no plans to purchase Conygre House. We have not been in discussion with the Council about this in the past, and are not in discussion with the Council about it at present.” The town council gave the Friends of Conygre House £1,500 to launch a feasibility study into possible future uses of the house but has yet to see any developments.

Park .. and rain stays away!

It’s one of the highlights of the Filton calendar - and the crowds turned out in force for this year’s Festival, dubbed the Party in the Park. Bands played all afternoon for the good-sized crowds and thankfully the rain stayed away. Town councillor Brian Mead was master of ceremonies, introducing a series of acts, including some talented dancers and cheerleaders. At the bottom end of the field, dog owners turned out for a special judged show and several community groups had stalls, including the popular Filton WI with their delicious cakes and goodies. The usual fairground was also an attraction for families, and the Ratepayers Arms hosted a hog roast. Town council chairman Adam Monk said: “It was great to see so many people enjoying themselves and we certainly got lucky with the weather considering how wet it has been lately.” There were complaints on some internet forums about lack of signs for toilets and also about people flying remote control planes close to the crowds, but none of this detracted from an excellent day.

MUGA takes step closer Upbeat for fete - despite rain A modern sports court for Filton has taken a step closer after the town council chose its preferred company. The council wants to build a MUGA - Multi-Use Games Area to replace the tennis courts which could cater for basketball, tennis football and other sports. In May, representatives of GB Sports & Leisure and SMP Playgrounds outlined their proposals and the council has now chosen SMP. The project will hinge on funding and SMP is able to provide access to a funding assistant who, it is claimed, has had 100% success with other projects. Cllr Rikki Teml, who has been driving the project, said: “I am really pleased that the project has progressed to the next stage where further consultation can take place. “I encourage the local public to get involved during the next stages.”

Crowds enjoyed the annual Charborough Road summer fete - despite the poor weather. Many of the attractions were indoor but bands and dancers still managed to put on a good show for families and friends of the children. The money from the summer fete is paid straight to the school for them to use for extra things throughout the year. In the last year, for example, money has been spent on a science show and resources for science week, arts and crafts extras, Christmas puppet show, resources for Sports Week and other projects.

Concrete cancer From Page 1

The streets in Filton affected are: Conygre Grove, Conygre Road, Station Road, Filton Avenue, Lower House Crescent, Rodney Crescent and Canberra Grove. Not all houses in these streets will be affected although some properties which were originally council-owned but are now owned privately may be affected by concrete cancer. A Merlin spokesperson said: “We own more than 1,400 nontraditional, or pre-cast reinforced concrete (PRC) homes in South Gloucestershire. These homes were traditionally built after the Second World War as a quick way to meet the demand for housing. Unfortunately many of them suffer from problems such as damp and draughts and unless we carry out work, they will develop structural problems in the years to come. “We want to provide quality homes for our residents to live in. We have set up a PRC project team, made up of residents of these properties and Merlin staff to manage our work to

improve these properties. The team is working on a review to decide which homes should go into a repair and improvement programme, and which homes may be on sites with the potential for redevelopment to provide additional homes to help meet the demand for housing in South Gloucestershire. “We’ve hand delivered letters to all residents whose property is being considered for redevelopment. “They’ve received leaflets about how we will support them if they need to move, and general information about the project. Residents were also invited to six roadshows that we held where residents could find out more about refurbishment and redevelopment and have a chat with a member of staff.” Residents moved out for work on their homes will be allocated temporary housing in the area where possible. PRC homes were built after the war but only ever intended to have a lifespan of 10 years. Around one in five Merlin homes is PRC.

Friends help Vi celebrate 100th

Vi Green was the toast of Filton earlier this month as she celebrated her 100th birthday with a special party at the Elm Park pavilion. Members of the Filton Chest and Heart charity, for which Vi has been on the committee for more than 25 years, put on a spread and vocal group Spectrum delighted the large gathering with a selection of favourite songs. Vi, who was born in 1912 in Eastville, was also joined by former Chest and Heart president John Harvey and current president Nick Maskell, both lung experts at Southmead Hospital who expressed their admiration for Vi and also the work of the charity. Other guests included Rob and Catherine from Avon Cars taxi firm who have transported Vi around for several years now. Vi received a special cake from Pat Smith, below, having earlier received her message from the Queen, above right. Later this month, her late husband Bernard’s former

regiment, the Coldstream Guards, will hold a party for Vi. Chest and Heart chairman Brian Smith said: “Vi is absolutely marvellous and we were thrilled to give this party.”

Newleaze House in Filton looks set to close as sheltered housing after the board of Merlin Housing Society accepted the society’s recommendations about the future of ten supported housing schemes in South Glos. The decision comes after many rounds of meetings and informal and formal consultation with residents, local councillors and MPs. There has been concern in Filton that residents would be faced with moving out of the area if there were no alternatives in the local area. Merlin has also confirmed that Buckingham House in Filton will be “remodelled for improved older people’s housing”. Earlier this month a small group of councillors and residents lobbied the Merlin board meeting at their Chipping Sodbury offices ahead of their decision. Sally Wilcox, Head of Supported Housing for Merlin said: “We wanted to engage residents and show that we were listening to them throughout this process. “More than 80% of our residents (across South Glos) gave us their opinion on the options for the future of their schemes and two thirds agreed with what we were proposing. “We’ve written to residents this week to tell them the outcome and invite them to a meeting to explain the next steps and give them a very rough timescale for when those steps will happen. “We know the prospect of change is very worrying for our residents. We’re committed to working with them on a 1-2-1 basis to ensure that they are supported through this process. “It will take us time to plan in and schedule all the works and as an organisation, we don’t

envisage starting any of the remodelling or redevelopment until at least 2014.” According to Merlin, of the 40 tenants at Newleaze House – a linked series of separate units with many internal steps and four staircases – almost half gave formal feedback on the options. In a statement, the company said that three quarters of those responding agreed with the recommended option – change of use. And the majority of residents who made a comment as part of the feedback were positive about the changes. One resident wrote: “The building wasn’t fit for purpose the day it was commissioned in the 1960s. Change of use is obviously the best.” ‘Sally’ said: “Newleaze just isn’t suitable for older people as it is – especially for accessibility reasons.” The decision to recommend a change of use was influenced by the relatively high cost of either redeveloping the existing building into improved older people’s housing (£117k per unit) or remodelling the existing building as general needs housing (£72k per unit).

Residents and Filton councillors who lobbied the Merlin board at their Chipping Sodbury offices before they made their decision regarding Newleaze House, opposite page below

l 75% of residents who responded to consultation SUPPORT proposals l Work on site not likely to begin for “at least five years” l Councillor calls for residents to be allowed to stay until they wish to move A Merlin spokesperson said: “As a not-for-profit organisation, we have a responsibility to ensure that we get the best value for money from our residents rent. In the packs we sent to residents, we used student accommodation as an example of change of use. Some local residents have expressed concern at this. “However, this decision does not mean that this is definitely what the change of use will be. As our report to our Board stated:

“For Newleaze House, where we are recommending a change of use, there is a requirement for some careful market research before that change of use is finalised. “We can’t at this stage give any definite idea of what will happen when, but we do not envisage being in a position to start any actual work on this site until at least January 2017. “ South Glos councillor for Filton Ian Scott said: “I urged the Merlin Board to reconsider the

proposed decision on Newleaze House, as most of the residents are happy with their current accommodation and wish to remain at Newleaze House. “If the proposed decision was not to be changed, I urged Merlin to take measures to reduce the stress of residents at Newleaze House to ensure residents have suitable alternative accommodation taking into account residents’ wishes on desired relocations. “I understand other

authorities/housing organisations facing a similar situation in a proposed closure situation have kept current residents in the accommodation until the last person has agreed to move to avoid stressful forced relocation. “And I also urged the Board to reconsider timescales for closures with a view to extending them to reduce the stress on residents for whom their current homes were thought of as their last homes.”

Letters and opinions Parking

Situation is ridiculous

It’s getting ridiculous now around the Sidings/New Rd/ Pilkington Close area. Something must be done. Surely it’s not that difficult to paint some yellow lines on the road. What if there is an emergency? There is NO WAY emergency vehicles have clear access to our roads. It also creates even more of a nightmare when school children are walking to/from school. Leah Newleaze House

Town will suffer

It’s the social structure of Filton that will again suffer. Merlin housing are making commercially led decisions rather than council led decisions after S.Glos handed over their housing stock unwisely to Merlin. Do the Merlin board members not receive a salary or the employees? Or do they receive costs only? No they are salaried and have overheads, they are a business. It’s easy to use the term “not for profit” but that’s after all costs which, if they are too high, can be a concern as charges have to then be raised. There are mixed messages on this as it’s not what residents are telling Filton council and they have said some residents feel intimidated by Merlin to accept the situation. Let’s see the published results of the consultation of Newleaze residents. And what about the surrounding streets? Many residents, probably elderly, are confused by this situation. Surrounding streets residents have already consulted for legal advice on the change of use and Merlin have will have a fight. Shame on S.Glos for handing over the housing stock instead of managing it. What do taxpayers get in return? The closing down of a town. Filtonresident l Since Merlin took over Newleaze House, the investment Merlin has put into Newleaze House each year to improve the building accessibility has been modest.

Cllr Ian Scott with fellow Filton councillors Darryl Collins and Adam Monk protesting at the HQ of Merlin • Newleaze External03 – Handrail to front entrance • Newleaze External06 – Ramped access and handrail to main entrance • Newleaze External16 – Access ramp to rear (1No.) • Newleaze External20 – Access ramp to rear (1No.) • Newleaze External22 – Access ramp to rear (2No.) There is no legal deadline to increase the size of the accommodation to meet new standards. When I met with Merlin and residents at Newleaze House at Christmas, a case was made that

residents would prefer to remain with the current standards of accommodation and building access rather than move. I therefore urged the Merlin Board to reconsider the proposed decision on Newleaze House, as most of the residents are happy with their current accommodation and wish to remain at Newleaze House. If the proposed decision was not changed, I urged Merlin to take measures to reduce the stress of residents at Newleaze House to ensure residents have suitable alternative accommodation taking into account residents’ wishes on desired relocations. I understand other authorities/housing organisations facing a similar situation in a proposed closure situation have kept current residents in the accommodation until the last resident has agreed to move to avoid stressful forced relocation. I urged the Merlin Board to be responsible and not force any unagreed moves. And I also urged the Board to reconsider the proposed timescales for closures with a view to extending them to reduce the stress on residents for whom their current homes were thought of as their last homes and a further move would never

be necessary. The elderly residents deserve to be treated with dignity and compassion. Ian Scott, Filton Councillor, South Gloucestershire Council l Our Labour South Glos councillor can say what he likes, they have been ignored on this because they allowed Merlin to take over as landlords. Ok so Ian Scott wrote to Merlin but they ignored it. What has he done actually at South Glos council on this? Has he lobbied those who let Merlin decide on change of use? As for the other two who are supposed to support us, forget it, they seem uninterested. Greg Chess clubs

News Tory bid to keep free parking Conservative councillors have pledged to fight to retain free car parking as Council policy across South Gloucestershire. They have tabled a motion to this month’s Council meeting calling on the Council to retain free car parking as Council policy now that all three political parties have recently started to run the council through a series of old style committees. There are no proposals to change the current situation but the Tories want to ensure that the free parking policy introduced in 2004 remains in place. Hanham Conservative councillor June Bamford said: “As a Council, we should do what we can to help our traders and shopkeepers to thrive in these tough economic times and so it’s important that we send a united message that every

The Conservative motion says: Council considers that the retention of free car parking is of vital importance in supporting our town and local centres, as

Honouring our leavers Abbeywood Community School With fond memories we have said goodbye to year 13 after two years in Abbeywood Community School’s Post 16 centre. Year 13 are the first year group through the Abbeywood Community School Post 16 centre. During that time the students have worked incredibly hard during lessons, examinations and completing BTEC assignments. In recognition of this effort and determination the school held a leavers’ assembly on Monday 25th June. This assembly was the last chance many students and teachers had to see each other until the very important A Level results day on the 16th August. During the assembly Mr Baker (Executive Headteacher), Mr Peacock (Head of Post 16) and two student officers (Siamak Rezazadeh and Arie Johansen) spoke of the contribution Post 16 students have made and the journey they have made from Year 11 to 13 and beyond. For many students the future will be equally as demanding and enjoyable with many students applying to University, Apprenticeships, College or Employment. In recognition of the students’ efforts, progress and attainment, the school awarded certificates and trophies for year 13 students. Certificate winners for academic attainment, progress or effort: Lyana Bell, Geography;

Academic Progress – Zak Field Zak’s progress during the last two years has been fantastic and he has come on in leaps and bounds as a Science and Mathematics student. Zak has demonstrated continued improvement and progress for which we are all proud of him. We wish Zak success in his future career and education.

During the leavers’ assembly, individuals received their personal trophy: Ciaran Browning, Danielle Forrister, Daisay Johnson, Steph Paddon, Fiona Porteous, Mazhar Shar, Alex Rennolds, Wayne Shore and Emma-Ann Watkins Three new awards for Post 16 have been created this year to recognise academic achievement and progress but also individual contributions to other students in the Post 16 centre. Academic achievement award – Alex Bull Alex has worked incredibly hard during his two years and his success has been demonstrated by very high grades in his AS and A2 examinations. Alex has been awarded 100% in three of his A Level Mathematics examinations which is a feat in itself. We know Alex will continue to attain academically and we wish him success at University.

Contribution to Post 16 life – Arie Johansen and Siamak Rezazadeh This year the Post 16 centre has organised different sporting events and activities culminating in the Post 16 summer prom on the 29th June. These activities have been driven forward by the student officers and particularly Siamak and Arie. They have helped organise and open a Post 16 tuck shop alongside fellow Post 16 officers and have played an active part in improving the experience for fellow students. We wish both students success at university in the new academic year. For all students who are in years 12 and 13 we personally wish them success in their AS and A Level results this summer and hope all students have a relaxing summer prior to the start of Year 13, University, Apprenticeships or future employment. The A Level results date will be 16th August.

Filton woman’s buggy push

A Filton woman whose daughter was helped in her early days of life by a special unit at Southmead Hospital has helped to raise nearly £5,000 for a charity for babies born early. As we reported last month, Kerry Robinson organised a buggy push and more than 60 mums, dads and children took part in the event at Bradley Stoke. Kerry’s daughter Amber was born on June 27, 2011, six weeks early and taken straight to nicu at Southmead to help with her breathing. Amber came home a few weeks later and is now a very happy and healthy 10 month old. Kerry said she wanted to give something back after the help she was given during the time of Amber’s birth and the weeks afterwards. She said: “Our buggy push in Bradley Stoke was a huge success

Filton residents are being urged to help drive up cardboard recycling rates by making sure that they don’t throw cardboard into their green garden waste bins. South Glos Council, with its waste and recycling partner SITA UK, has launched a new education campaign to encourage residents to put cardboard out separately from other waste. Making sure that cardboard isn’t placed into green bins not only ensures that it can be recycled most effectively, but also helps reduce the cost of processing garden waste. Measures to keep cardboard out of green bin waste were first introduced in 2010 and since then the amount that is recycled

in the district is now more than 4,000 tonnes a year. And now the council and SITA UK are hoping to increase recycling rates even further with a new initiative which began last month. From now on, green bins will be inspected by collection crews and any found to include cardboard will have a sticker attached explaining what can and can’t be included. If green bins are still being used for cardboard after two collection cycles – ie. from 16 July – crews will be unable to empty them and a sticker will be attached to explain why. Chair of the council’s Communities Committee Claire Young said: “Increasing our recycling rates and reducing the amount of waste that goes to landfill is an important priority for the council and it’s very encouraging that with the new collection services our recycling rates have risen to 54 per cent. “However we know we could be doing more and I hope this education campaign will help us drive up our cardboard recycling rates even further, helping reduce our carbon footprint as a district as well as delivering a more cost-effective service. “The education campaign was trialled in December last year in Bradley Stoke and went very well, with the stickers leading to a sharp increase in the amount

of segregated card recycled. If this is repeated across the district it should deliver very positive results for our overall recycling rates.” Cardboard can be put out for collection in a variety of ways, including in a cardboard collection bag (available to order free of charge from the council on 01454 868 000), in another container such as a plastic box or stout bag, or collected together in a larger cardboard box. Residents of flats will be

unaffected by the campaign as they generate little or no garden waste. For these homes, the green bins that are provided are used exclusively for cardboard and these arrangements will not change. Filton Community Garden we want YOUR views As a council, we are proud to be supporting the Community Garden project, with an initial budget of £5,000. Now we want people to get involved and to hear their views. As you can see, we are hoping to create a pleasant area behind the tennis courts for all to enjoy. There could also be a central area, pictured right, with plants and seating. We want feedback on whether there is support for this project and if so, whether you would like to see the council investing in the garden. We have done and continue to provide facilities for youngsters but this would be something for everyone, young and old, to enjoy and be involved in. This consultation runs until the end of August. Please fill out the form below with your views.

“We wish we had done it years ago” Moving into a retirement development is a big decision but how do you know when to make that move? Ginetta Vedrickas, presenter of BBC property show, Staying Put, asked a Churchill Retirement Living couple how they knew that the time was right. Seven months ago, Andrew and Kate Robinson-Woledge were living in their bungalow in New Milton, Hampshire. “We worked in the day, watched TV when we got home and then went to bed.” explained Kate. “We were fine but it was a bit boring.” Fast forward to the couple’s lives today in their smart new apartment in Highcliffe, Dorset and the response you get is quite different: “This is the best move we’ve ever made; we only wish we’d done it years ago! Back in the bungalow we felt isolated, but here I’ve spoken to more people in the last seven months than I did in seven years!”

All Churchill developments are set in gardens and have communal facilities such as an owners’ lounge, laundry room, car parking plus a guest suite for visitors. As well as a host of on-site facilities, locations are carefully chosen to ensure that owners have easy access

to shops, doctors and other amenities. “We can go for a walk on the beach or get a bus into Bournemouth. It’s perfect and there’s nothing we would change,” enthuses Kate. “I can’t recommend moving into somewhere like this more

highly. Even if we won the lottery we wouldn’t move!” Churchill Retirement Living has a brand new development, Concorde Lodge in Filton, Bristol where you too could enjoy a new lifestyle. To find out more please call on 01179 698442 or visit www.churchillretirement.co.uk

Filton business of the month

27

We meet Leigh Bryant and his team at LNB Towbars Quality, Quality, Quality! That’s the philosophy of Leigh Bryant and the staff at LNB Towbars on Golf Course Lane, a thriving Filton business which does an awful lot more than what it says on the tin. In fact, although the company started life mainly providing towbars for vehicles to pull caravans, they have enjoyed a remarkable expansion which means that if you want something added to your car, it is almost certain LNB will be able to help you. The firm - boss Leigh, his partner Karron Gosden, mechanic Mike Pike and apprentice Daniel Collins - offer a huge range of services. These include state-of-the art entertainment systems, hands free kits for phones, sat navs, roof racks, bike racks, number plates, internal work on vans, beacons and much more ... including, of course, towbars! In fact, as Leigh puts it, anything you can add to a vehicle, inside or out. Their philosophy is to bring a high degree of quality to the work. Leigh told filtonvoice that his standards are so high that he has opted to take on new mechanics as apprentices then put them through rigorous training both at college and on the job, which means that the company philosophy is understood from day one. He said: “The focus is on quality here so with the mechanics, we try to mould them to our way of thinking. “This means that we set the standards for our work. I simply would not sacrifice on quality.” He said that much of the work is based on referrals and he has customers who are willing to travel up to 200 miles for LNB’s unique service. Leigh, 36,who is an auto electrician by trade and a Filton resident, is a real hands-on boss, working with the mechanics on jobs and also acting as the final voice for quality control. Behind the scenes, Karron is the administrative powerhouse, a vital role as business has continued to grow in spite of the economic problems affecting everyone just now. The firm moved to Golf

Leigh, back, with Mike, Daniel and Karron

Course Lane in 2010, totally refitting the premises, having been predominantly a mobile service until then. Leigh said that he is keen to make local people aware of the things going on at Fairway Industrial Centre because some people may be unaware that there are thriving firms on the industrial estate. He said: “There’s not very good signage and some people think that as soon as you turn into Golf Course Lane, you are entering Airbus. “I am hoping that ourselves, along with the other businesses, can make people more aware of the firms up here. In fact, the location in Filton is great because when a customer drops off their vehicle, they can have a coffee at Filton Golf Club, pop over to the libary or leisure centre or even take the local bus to the Mall. “But we just want more people to know that we are here.” Leigh said that as the firm has expanded, their reputation means that they have been working closely with local garages and other businesses in a real collaborative effort. And LNB’s accent on quality should ensure that continues long into the future.

Brighter futures TACT fosters more children and young people than any other UK charity. As a charity, our staff, foster carers and supporters are making every penny work hard for the young people in our care. There is no such thing as an ideal foster carer - if you have a spare room and time and energy then you could provide a young person with a happy home. In return we will give you 24/7 support, up to £445 per child, per week and professional training. Although the real rewards will come from knowing you’ve made a difference to the life of a child.

Thought for the month

For a limited period only.

with Rev’d Canon Brian Arman, St Peter’s Church, Filton

www.filtonchurch.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk

Dear friends The summer months are traditionally time to try to take a holiday; to find time to rest and recuperate or, as we say today, “to chill out”. If, like me, you are one of the older members of the community then your memories of summer holidays in the 1950s and early 60s will probably involve days spent at the seaside, perhaps riding on Weston or Weymouth’s donkeys, trying to eat soggy ice creams before they melted, watching Punch and Judy and eating al fresco meals on the beach where the joke always was that sandwiches were just that - full of sand! The fact was that this was often nearer the truth than one would wish, especially if the wind was blowing in the wrong direction! Strangely, I cannot remember wet summer holiday days, just playing on the beach at Weymouth (I’m a Swindonian and Swindonians always refer to Weymouth as ‘Swindon by the Sea’) with my brother and cousin or riding around the ‘swannery’ on the miniature railway which my benighted parents desperately tried to keep me away from usually unsuccessfully. We all need a break from the usual pressures of life. So if you are going to be away in the summer, do try to relax and enjoy yourself and thus recharge your batteries for the Autumn and Winter to come.

But just taking a break won’t be enough to sustain you through the pressures and challenges of modern living. Many of us are better off in material terms than ever before but in a spiritaul context we are as poor as ‘church mice’. To sustain our exterior lives we need an ‘inner life’ as well. Jesus knew this only too well. “Come to me,” he says, “all those who are burdened and heavy laden,” and again, “Peace I give to you, my peace I leave with you, a peace so great that the world cannot give it.” Inner peace, the indwelling of God, is fundamental to a truly fulfilled and sustainable life. May the peace of God be with you and renew or invigorate your inner life as a break from life’s normal pressures reinvigorates your outer selves. With every blessing Father Brian

Health Matters, with Dr Liz Lee Horfield Health Centre, Lockleaze Rd It is impossible to avoid getting bitten by insects and in the UK at this time of year we see quite a lot of them in the surgery. There are two common complications to bites. The first is a minor allergic reaction in which a red circular patch develops around the bite over 24hrs. It is generally less than the size of a 10p coin, itchy rather than painful, and starts to get better. But if it’s very itchy see the

pharmacist who will advise you about antihistamine treatment. The second complication is much less common and is caused by a bacterial infection entering the skin through the bite. It appears as one or more thin red lines slowly extending up the limb over the course of the next 48 hours. We prescribe oral antibiotics for these infections and they get better very quickly.

FIELD GAR K A O GE

Being accustomed to wheelie bins and numerous re-cycling containers along Filton’s Wallscourt Road, it was a pleasant surprise recently to witness this regal scene on my way to the shops. A magnificent open carriage fit for the Queen, complete with a footman and woman, awaited the bride and groom, Dr Koyes Ahmed and Shahzadi Fathema Ahmed, to convey them to church. It was truly a glance back into an earlier age when the most important day in a couple’s lives was to be celebrated in real style. Most impressive to me were the two lovely horses patiently waiting. I spoke with the bridegroom’s sister, Ferona, and the bride, Fathema, thanking them for the respect they showed to their neighbours, advising them of the increased traffic their wedding would cause. Scenes like this are rare these days. But the regality of it all makes a welcome change. It was almost beyond belief. It was so unexpected that I dashed back for my camera. If “Getting Married in the Morning” was top of the agenda no doubt this delightful entourage would “Get them to the Church on Time.” We wish the newly-weds Fathema and her husband Koyes Ahned every happiness in the years ahead. Filton Working Together what’s it all about?

This month the team from Southern Brooks Community Partnership tells us more about the work they are doing in Filton

What is Filton working together?

Filton working together is the name for the Priority Neighbourhood programme in Filton. Priority Neighbourhoods are areas across the country where statistics show that against national averages the area is in the bottom 20%. This doesn’t mean that they are not good places to live, just that not all families in the area are as successful as they might like to be. Children may not do as well as in school and fewer people may be accessing the services and benefits that they are entitled to. To try to improve the situation, ‘Filton Working Together’ has formed. It is a partnership of groups, agencies and individuals who meet once a month to make plans and co-ordinate action. Any one can come along to the meetings and

get involved – please get in touch if you are interested!

Children and Young People

In order to improve the life chances of children and young people, Dream Scheme has been set up in Filton. Dream Scheme

is a regular community action project for children and young people in which they receive points for doing work in their community. They can use their points to go on trips such as cinema or bowling. The first Filton Dream Scheme project started on the 2nd and 3rd April at Elm Park where young Filton residents had

previously designed and created a mural to transfer on to the leisure centre wall at Elm Park.

Employment and Finance

Rising unemployment levels in Filton mean we need to create more opportunities for people to increase their skills and stay active. With this in mind Filton College and Southern Brooks Community Partnership teamed up to run an Apprenticeship event, encouraging local businesses to take on apprentices and benefit from the comprehensive support provided by Filton College. The event took place on February the 9th and resulted in Merlin Housing pledging to take on new apprenticeships in every department!

Special feature: Lift Share Schemes

Looking to spend less in 2012? Rail fares have increased by 5.9% already this year; petrol prices continue to rise; family incomes are impacted by salary squeezes and rising bills. All the more reason to make car sharing your optimum mode of transport for 2012. Regularly sharing your commute with just one other person can typically save you about £800 a year - not to mention provide great company for those gloomy winter days!

If you are interested, sign up at 2careshare.com – Filton’s local scheme, and find out who else from your area is travelling in the same direction as you each day.

What’s coming up?

Filton Working Together is currently planning to: • Create a Trim Trail in Elm Park to promote more physical activity; • Ensure that the free courses provided by the job centre are better promoted so that more people benefit; • Produce a comprehensive leaflet about what’s going on for children and young people in Filton; • Set up a Children and Young Persons’ network

House’s role in Space race

This month, Jackie Sims of Filton Community History looks at how a prominent site in the community has changed over the past 100 years

Highridge House 1976: The white house with a red roof, top centre of the picture, had extensive grounds, containing an orchard, behind and to the left of the house. (Photo Colin Pulsford). Below, Concorde Lodge February 2012. (Photo © Stan Sims) A large detached house was built in the field called Townsend about 1900. In the 1901 Census Herbert Hardwick, a corn mill manager and his wife Blanche were resident in what was called Highridge House. They lived there until 1910 (Wrights Directory of Bristol) The house, on the Gloucester Road/Southmead Road junction, was then home to Mr Hobbs and his son Edgar. Mr Hobbs was a slate and marble merchant trading from York Street, Stokes Croft. Mr Hobbs and Edgar gave lantern shows much enjoyed by the people of Filton. In 1937 Gloucestershire Council agreed the house on Filton Hill that was both Police Station and home for the Police Constable was too small for a rapidly growing Filton. They acquired Highridge House. Divided into two the house

provided living accommodation for the officer in charge; the other part was the police station. There was plenty of room at the back to park cars and for a small mortuary. By 1955 this accommodation was too small. Gloucestershire Council acquired the allotment site between Elm Park and next door to the British Restaurant and built the present police station. When the police moved out, Highridge House was acquired

by Bristol Aeroplane Company - date unknown. The mortuary was converted to a meeting room. Staff entered through a door at the back of the house from the car park. The rooms became offices. During the 1970s and 80s Highridge House was home to various projects of the Space Division. The successful UK-4 project was conducted from an office in that building, followed by the unsuccessful Orbital Test

Satellite. There was a joint project with America to design and build a spacecraft; for a brief period in the early 1970s the Old Police Station was a key link in What Might Have Been - but it was not to be. The space project work was then moved to new buildings in Golf Course Lane Highridge House became redundant to British Aircraft Corporation / British Aerospace needs and was demolished about 1995. The site was vacant for a long period and still accessible in 2002. It was eventually sold to Churchill Retirement Living who have erected a retirement complex – Concorde Lodge. Just completed, the 65 one and two bedroom flats are up for sale. l Information on Filton’s Police Stations from ‘Filton, Gloucestershire’ by Lesley Harris. Tip the lemons, sugar and half the water into a food processor and blend until the lemon is finely chopped. 2. Pour the mixture into a sieve over a bowl, then press through as much juice as you can. Top up with the remaining water and serve with plain ice or frozen with slices of lemon and lime.

Keep your pets safe, with Michael Parry ‘Don’t hesitate, vaccinate’ is the message for local pet owners from Filton Vets4Pets as recent reports suggest an increase in disease but also a worrying decrease in vaccination levels amongst pets . A recent survey, which records a wide range of infectious disease diagnoses in dogs, cats and rabbits, demonstrates that in almost all diseases monitored there are reported cases and, in many instances, an increasing trend. In light of this, to protect the health of local pets and those that come into contact with them, it’s important to improve levels of vaccination. Michael Parry, vet at Filton Vets4Pets veterinary practice, said: “Vaccination is the only proven method of protecting your animal against a host of potentially life-threatening diseases and the more pets vaccinated, the better the

Read your way around the world

This summer, when the world comes to London and the South West for the London 2012 Olympic & Paralympic Games, libraries across the South West are inviting you to explore the world through reading. Take yourself on a voyage of discovery, experience new cultures and be inspired as you cross the world’s borders, exploring new lands beyond your normal reading territory! All you have to do is read 6 books, one each from 5 continents plus one other of your choice. For suggested reads, pick

up a list from your local library, or check them out at the www. readsouthwest.blogspot.com. Use a specially printed SW Reading Passport, also available from any library, to record the books you’ve read. Write your thoughts and reflections on a page of the passport, tear it out and hand it in at your local library. The pages may be displayed in the library and each review handed in before 30th September 2012 will be entered into a regional prize draw to win a “suitcase of books”.*

In memory of our friend

Club members present the cheque to Zoe Steer, far left. Below, Mike, Terry, Marie and Martin on the memorial bench

Regulars at the Filton and District Social Club have raised £750 for Diabetes UK in memory of one of the regulars at the Conygre Grove venue. Members wanted to remember their friend Brian Jarrett who died earlier this year so a group organised events with the result being a memorial bench outside the club and the cash for Diabetes UK. At a special cheque presentation last month, Zoe Steer from the charity accepted the money from club members. The organisers of the events were Martin Sedlen and Terry Hamilton, with help from club secretary Marie Ludlow and steward Mike Stone. They said they were delighted that they had managed to raise enough money for the bench with a sizeable amount left over for the charity. Among the events run to raise cash were a fun day, a race night and a darts night. The organisers now want to make this an annual event after the success this Year. Zoe said: “It has been a fantastic effort in support of Diabetes UK and in memory of Brian.”

Diabetes facts l Type 1 diabetes develops when the body’s immune system attacks and destroys the cells that produce insulin. As a result the body is unable to produce insulin and this leads to increased blood glucose levels, which in turn can cause serious damage to all organ systems. l Type 2 diabetes develops when the body does not produce enough insulin to maintain a normal blood glucose level, or when the body is unable to effectively use the insulin that is being produced.

Arts, with Deborah Harvey |Phantom of the Opera, Hippodrome With the exception of the film of The Sound of Music, which, thanks to repeated childhood visits to the cinema with my grandmother, has the ability to reduce me to tears within the first few frames (we’re talking long before Maria starts fondling birch trees), I’m not really one for musicals. But Son the Elder was very keen to see Phantom of the Opera when it was at the Bristol Hippodrome last month, and so I took a deep breath and ordered a pair of seats in the stalls for a matinee performance. Having read about sufferers

of ‘Post Melodramatic Stress Disorder’, whose lamentable condition can be triggered by a mere glimpse of a mask or strain of saccharine music, I wondered what I was letting myself in for; also, given that the chandelier was suspended from the closed skylight in the dome, how I was going to stay awake in what was a rather stuffy auditorium. (Yes, we’d chosen the one fine hot afternoon in June to sit indoors in the dark.) I needn’t have worried. From the moment during the first scene, set at an auction of theatrical effects,

when the sheet covering the aforementioned chandelier disappears in a puff of smoke (how do they do that?), I was entranced. I don’t know why but the fact that it was fairly operatic took me surprise – surely the title should have given it away? – but this was a boon as it gave substance to what was a fairly flimsy and predictable plot. Furthermore, the performers of the three main roles – John Owen-Jones as the Phantom; Simon Bailey as Raoul, Vicomte de Chagny; and Katie Hall as Christine Daaé - were simply superb, as was Angela M Caesar

as the prima donna, Carlotta Giudicelli. I now think I might have to have to dig deep for tickets to the Lion King this autumn … Deborah Harvey is a Filton poet and author.
