Revealed - how the new-look Filton leisure centre will look by Shane Gibson Filton residents have had a first look at designs for the new-look leisure centre. The Town Council hosted a public consultation by Active Nation, the accepted tender company for the leisure centre, with a number of Filton residents in attendance. Active Nation’s Managing Director Stewart Martin, Project Manager Chris True and the Architect Rima Yousef gave detailed descriptions of what will be built and the benefits for the residents of Filton that the new leisure centre will bring. Rima broke down the

developments of the new constructions. She said: “The space here, the size is great, far better than many others we see. But the building is trapped in the past, something from the sixties or seventies.” As shown in the plans there will be a new single main entrance included in an extension at the front of the building. This will be the single point of entry into the leisure centre. The entrance will lead into a café/hub/waiting area that will provide access to the new facility. The new constructions are to be built around the pool with

only aesthetic changes made to what already exists around the pool currently. The ground floor will have parent/viewing areas around the pool and learners’ pool. The parents' area is also close to the new double-height, soft play area. At the rear of the building will be a covered seating area underneath the Fitness Suite overhang. The upper floor will feature a forty-five station Fitness Suite covering an area of 220sqm and will have views onto Elm Park, as will the office space and meeting room with areas of 21sqm and 32sqm, respectively. Also on the upper floor will be staff rooms and a large Flexible Studio/ Function Room (150sqm). The roof will feature more than 300sqm of solar power technology. Stewart, who had previously spoke of Active Nations' previous successes and history, said that they were not looking for actively fit people “who are looking for the next shiny new thing” to become members at the leisure centre but wanted people who

were wanting to get fit and healthy but had difficulties in doing so. “Our mission is to stop people falling into vulnerable health categories,” he said. During the Q&A session, Chris answered questions from residents. When asked why the pool was not going to be upgraded or replaced, Chris explained that the cost of the project would increase by a further £8m in that scenario. However, there will be a brandnew hoist and air handling units will be replaced. Chris explained that there is no intention to close the pool whilst work is taking place. Rima explained that whilst work commences around the front of the building, access will be available through what was the Ratepayers. Once the front of the building is completed, work will move around the building. “We will try to achieve minimum disruption to the pool,” said Rima. There will be integration of Elm Park into the development. “Its all about trying to connect Continued on Page 4

Chris spoke of Active Nation investing into a Health Hub, a low impact exercise facility. He said: “It mainly targets people have joint issues or people who want to exercise but don’t want to have a high impact on their joints. There will be Medical Referral programmes for people unable to take part in regular exercises due to cardiac or weight management issues. They will be GP referred and taken through programmes by qualified fitness trainers.” Another resident asked how much the council were spending on the project. Councillor Andy Robinson said there would be £4.4m of investment over 25 years. After the third year the

News council will receive revenue from the leisure centre. When asked why the council would be paying be back over £6.2m over 25 years, Stewart said: “It is an extremely low interest rate because it is direct from the Government. The amount that the council are liable for paying back leads to a net neutral cash flow that compares favourably to the leisure centre's loss of £300,000 last year.” Chris added that the cost included an extra 12 positions of employment at the leisure centre for local people. There will be some sacrifices. There will no longer be badminton courts, skittles nor the Ratepayers Arms. Stewart said: “We are looking to provide a real family environment.” The speakers from Active Nation spoke positively of the development and there was much excitement for what will start to take shape from early next year.

“This is not an off the shelf product that you might see down the road. This leisure centre will really reflect what’s going on in Filton,” Stewart added. After inviting residents to

attend an extraordinary meeting the following evening to listen to the finances involved, FTC Chair Darryl Collins said: “Something had to be done, because to shut the place down would have cost

more than what we have chosen to do. And when we make these choices, it is in an open forum that you are all welcome to attend.”

Filton’s Louis wins national table tennis honours Filton's Louis Price, 17, justified his top seeding as he won the gold medal at the Junior National Cup – the first national competition for 15 months. He was defeated just once over a tough weekend of matches against the other top Under 19 Junior players in the country, hosted by Halton Table Tennis Club in Widnes. Louis had clear daylight at the top of the boys’ event, his nine wins from 10 matches seeing him finish two clear of a clutch of four players who had seven wins. He ended Day 1 on five wins, with Joe Cope and Connor Green one win behind. Price conceded only one game across his first four matches but was then pushed by Rhys Davies before prevailing 3-2 (11-9, 11-6, 9-11, 8-11, 11-4). Dan Ives, his coach in Bristol, commented: “It’s a big title to win and extremely difficult

to win as you have to be fully concentrated over the two days of competition. Playing all other top 12 players in the country is a real test of character. His training in Germany is certainly helping him with his play, as he

is working with some of Europe’s best players” Louis is currently preparing for his first year in the German league, playing for ASV Grunwettersbach, which starts in September.

Final standings: 1 Louis Price, 2 Ben Piggott, 3 Joe Cope, 4 Connor Green, 5 Amirul Hussain, 6 Josh Weatherby, 7 Olly Cornish, 8 Rhys Davies, 9 Maxim Stevens, 10 Robert Pelc, 11 David Gofton.

Up, up and away! Shane Gibson flies high as balloons take off from Elm Park 5:20AM. I have left the house and I am wondering why I am up and out this early in the morning. As I approached Elm Park through the car park, I saw a group of around 200 people. Prominent was the Costa stand, with a growing queue. Spread across the park were at least two dozen balloons with teams prepping them for inflation. Surrounded by international photographers and journalists, I made my way to Chris Allcock, chair of the organising committee for the Bristol International Balloon Fiesta - launching in this covid-affected year from Filton. “Filton Town Council have been absolute stars,” said Chris. “This was all sorted out

yesterday afternoon. We asked them and they opened up and have been absolutely brilliant.” Chris explained that Bristol Balloon Fiesta this year was

taking place over a twoweek period, rather than the traditional few days at Aston Court. “It’s what I call guerrilla

ballooning. We are just hunkering down and getting on with it.” Being that it was my first time at a balloon launch, Chris recommended that I absorb the atmosphere. After ingratiating myself with the pilots and crews, I was able to get myself a spot in the Ben’s Tiles and Reclamation Balloon. The balloon team was made up of the pilot (aka the P1) Craig Thompson, his mentor Nigel, Craig's wife Mandy, Rob, Dave, and young Freddy, Craig and Mandy’s son. Along for the ride was first timer Izzy. As Craig checked over lastContinued on Page 11

Soaring over Filton as balloon fiesta comes to town From Page 9 minute preparations, Nigel briefed Izzy and I on what we could expect as the balloon took off and how we should prepare for the landing. During the flight Nigel, with a career spanning 33 years, detailed the ins and outs of the ballooning industry. “Some of the commercial pilots might do one hundred flights per year if they are lucky. The private guys might be able to fly 20 times during the year.” At this point Nigel pointed out how different pilots have different flight plans. Although he had trained Craig 12 years before, he did not know that Craig was going to make a different plan than he would have chosen to. “As you can see, the Thatcher’s balloon went up in one direction and it has now changed due to the timing of when the pilot decided to take off. Craig, on the other hand, has decided to go straight up to reach those higher-level winds” explained Nigel. “As you can feel, the winds are incredibly gentle,” said Nigel. “So for wind direction we look for smoke.” As the balloon rose, the view became fantastic. Seeing the Severn Bridges, I thought about how I had never considered how close to the coast Filton is. Turning to Izzy, I asked how she became involved with the morning's flight. “Well, basically Nigel is my neighbour. The other day he

The Ben's Tiles and Reclamation team

asked me how adventurous I was. I said 'pretty, but it depends'. And so, here I am!” she said. Izzy will hopefully be taking more trips once Nigel has shown her the ropes and she has done a bit of studying. Now I was considering that I too might become a balloonist. I asked Nigel how long it takes for someone to become an accomplished pilot. “Initially to get your licence, it's like learning to drive a car, some people take longer than others. A minimum of 16 hours of flight, most people take 25 – 30 hours of flying before they are ready for their examination flight. Most people in the UK would take about 12 months to get these hours of flight, but as for the question to become accomplished, I would say 'your whole life'.” Nigel Looked over at Craig, he said: “Craig wasn’t confident that he would be able to get the balloon up and down in here (Elm Park) this morning. I was

100% confident that he would be able to do it.” Craig outlined his intentions. “We’ll get as low as we can and then turn to the right, if not we will take the top corner.” Nigel then explained how Craig had put too much heat into the balloon. “So, what he’s trying to do now is get as low to the trees as possible and let the wind blow us around a little bit.” As the balloon came closer to the ground, Nigel pointed out the roles of the ground crew. The Balloon was aided to the ground by Rob who pulled the crown whilst Craig tugged on the candy stripe balloon which opens the top of the balloon to let out the air. Stepping out of the basket I was greeted by Chris, a balloon enthusiast and chaser. “I left Longwell Green at 4AM this morning and cycled. I arrived here at 5am and looking around here, it’s just brilliant,” Chris said.

Chris helped the ground crew with the deflation process. As I talked with Craig and his wife Mandy, it became apparent that there are numerous unknown factors involved with ballooning that an outsider does not know of. “We have a wedding to go to once we’ve got the balloon packed away,” said Craig. “One of my concerns was that we might have ended up landing in a field or even more tricky a farm. If you do happen to land somewhere like that you have to get hold of the landowner or the farmer, who are often needing a gift for allowing you to land.” Looking at all the balloons it is difficult to ignore the sponsorship involved. Craig and Mandy fly balloons from two different sponsors: Ben’s Tiles and Reclamations and S M Gauge Company. “I think when it comes to advertising, things are coming around again,” said Nigel, “Although we do not have the shapes or the trends we had in the 1980s, advertising with a balloon could be greatly beneficial to a company, and you never know what might happen. When I was in Australia, I once saw a newspaper that had Craig on the front cover in a balloon!” Looking around at the photographers that were now leaving, I nodded in agreement. With a bit of wind and an early start, anything can happen. You might, like Izzy (and me) find yourself flying in a balloon before breakfast.

Students pass with distinction at boomsatsuma

A

ugust 10th, 2021, was an uplifting results day for boomsatsuma College students, with all achieving a qualification, and an impressive 54% awarded a Distinction, or higher, opening up fantastic future possibilities for them in Bristol’s creative sector. Mark Curtis, boomsatsuma co-founder, said: “These students have come through challenging Covid-19 pandemic journeys over the past two years, so this is an important boost for them all. They all have these great platforms, that will help them move on to the next stages of their lives, be-it staying in education or into employment. What’s enormous, is that they leave with so much more than qualifications, in terms of workplace experiences, self-confidence and wider life-skills. “We are now gearing up to return in September with next years’ students with most courses full, there are just a few spaces available for this year and we’ll be

opening for 2023 enrolment to find the next generation of Bristol’s creative voices.” The 2021 results show consistent performance across boomsatsuma’s creative media and acting courses, extending back over the past three years. There was no change in the way that the Level 3 National Diploma grades come via an assessment process, rather than exams, though Covid did mean boomsatsuma managed new teaching and student support processes, to sustain quality education and mentoring. The result was to achieve these excellent outcomes for the next generation of creative professionals.

Abbeywood Community School exam results

GCSE students rise to challenge of pandemic The pandemic has affected all students across the country but this year's GCSE group at Abbeywood Community School has maintained the school's fine record of academic excellence. Students achieved well across the full range of GCSE and Level 2 qualifications, outcomes have been strong and so has the progress of students from their starting points. Students have responded positively to the dedication of staff and staff said they were delighted that students have gained some outstanding results. A spokeswoman said: "Many will be continuing at Abbeywood or leaving for new destinations with academic success and as bright, mature and responsible young people." Ben Dilley, Associate Headteacher said: "We are extremely proud of our Year 11 students and all that they

have achieved during their time here at Abbeywood Community School. "This has been an incredibly challenging year for them, given the unprecedented circumstances of the Covid-19 pandemic and the disruption to their two years of GCSE studies. Students have been courageous and resilient in their learning, attributes that will undoubtedly contribute to their future success. "It is important to recognise the excellent support from families and the dedication from our teaching and support staff, who work relentlessly to provide the highest standard of education and wellbeing support and who have been instrumental in raising student aspirations." There were some notable individual successes: • Marianna Baker 10 grade 9s • Anna Arnott 8 grade 9s, 1 grade 8

News Patients home early after ops Hip and knee surgery patients are being sent home from Southmead Hospital early in a drive to get through a backlog of elective operations from the coronavirus pandemic. Patients who have had a hip or knee replacement and are deemed suitable for ‘hospital at home’ support are being discharged after two days, rather than the usual five days. Councillors expressed concern about post-operative patients getting three fewer days of hospital care, but a hospital chief assured them the initiative was safe at a public meeting last month. Elective waiting lists grew during the coronavirus pandemic as NHS hospitals did not have the staff or facilities to carry out all booked procedures as well as provide treatment for Covid-19 and other patients. By the end of April, 6,425 patients had been waiting for elective surgery for more than a year, and 41 had been waiting for more than two years, across Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire, a report to the meeting said.

The NHS Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) for the region was subsequently chosen along with 11 other areas to participate in a government ‘accelerator’ pilot to speed up the delivery of elective operations. It introduced the early discharge scheme at Southmead Hospital as part of a raft of pilot initiatives paid for with £8.5million of capital funding. Kingswood councillor April Begley said: “To take three days away from five is quite a lot.” But Evelyn Barker, deputy chief executive at North Bristol NHS Trust, which runs Southmead Hospital, said the scheme was well managed. Ms Barker said hip and knee replacement patients are assessed for their suitability for early discharge, some are transferred to step-down beds in the community instead of being sent home, and those sent home are managed by a ‘hospital at home’ team of doctors, nurses and physiotherapists. “People aren’t just pushed out the door home without any support,” she said.

"They have worked hard on their studies throughout their time at Abbeywood and have

also developed as well-rounded, confident and positive young people. "They have continued to astound us with their positivity and relentless drive to succeed. I would like to congratulate them and look forward to September, when most will return to our sixth form, when we will also be welcoming lots of students from other schools too!”

Death-defying thrills and fun as Circus Extreme comes to town Billed as a family show and housed in the UK’s largest socially distanced circus tent, Circus Extreme came to Filton in August and opened to a full house. The opening was a slow yet small activist/protest piece. Admittedly I was not sure who the message was aimed at. Then came the clown. Henry, the Prince of Clowns, would make his mark throughout the evening. His first segment was a Chaplinesque fight with a giant bumblebee. As much as I appreciated the homage, this was the lowest point of the show. Next up were the Danguir Troupe performing their high wire and double wheel of death stunt, a series of impressive feats that need to be seen to be fully appreciated. The two men used their own strength to create a centripetal force that rotated the wheel whilst each of them jumped and span in the air in expressive corkscrews motions as it did so. Henry the Clown returned with a charming segment in which a small girl tried to catch Henry’s unique returning hat. The show continued with a series of provocative dance routines, each dancer looking fantastic. The dances ended with a sultry tightrope and chair scenario. Then the juggling act, a standard fare if you consider juggling balls whilst standing in a ring of fire, on top of a moving four-by-four, to be normal! If that sounds intense, it was! It was at this point in the show, I realised just how much I was enjoying the music. As to be expected, almost everything was performed to a background of rock/metal tracks until the next act. Then came a sensual, almost lascivious suspension performance that presented love and sexuality between two people whilst they danced, flew, and embraced one another. Swinging each other by their mouths showed a trust and stability that one could aspire to in all relationships! Following the interval, a

dance routine started, only to be interrupted by the clown. Stumbling and tumbling along, he managed to make his way to the highwire perch. Now it was Henry’s time to shine. An all-male act involving a unicycle, a falling clown, and hoops of fire! As the show started to draw near its end, British legend Laura

Miller gave the performance of the night with her aquatic aerial ring, an evocative aerial dance which climaxed with an explosive fall into flaming water. Before the final segment, Henry returned with an elaborate dinner scene, that predictably ended up with a cake smashed into the clown's face. The finale was a motorcycle stunt act by the EXTREME FMX team. The Globe of Death, a large metal sphere is placed in the centre of the ring, and after a series of stunts inside the sphere, its time for the jumps. Breathtaking, dangerous, magnificent all suitably describe the feats of aerial manoeuvres that bring a thrilling sexy and sometimes funny show to its end. The show was a spectacle worth the price of admission. If you have the opportunity, experience the thrills of Circus Extreme. They are in Plymouth and London in September and October. Shane Gibson

n NEWS FROM THE METRO MAYOR

Code Red: Climate emergency needs leadership

LAST month’s United Nations report couldn’t have been clearer on the climate emergency: it’s Code Red for humanity. Unless world leaders take urgent action, our planet carries on heating up, meaning more devastating floods, more fierce heatwaves, more vicious wildfires. The easiest thing for decision-makers would be doing more of the same when it comes to economic growth and jobs. Some say that’s what created this global crisis. But leadership isn’t about taking easy decisions – quite the opposite. Radical and creative thinking is long overdue. As a teenager growing up in our area, I remember a slogan of the time: “Think globally, act locally.” That couldn’t be more apt. I’m sticking firm to my commitment to oppose Bristol Airport’s proposed expansion. That isn’t about stunting economic growth, as some may paint it, it’s about taking urgent, pragmatic local action to protect our irreplaceable planet. Of course we need more jobs here as we emerge from a brutal pandemic, but in green industries, not airports, investing in projects to help meet our ambitious goal of being carbon neutral by 2030. This month I’ll launch a £20 million Green Recovery Fund, in line with the commitment I made to you during the spring’s Metro Mayor

election. You’ll hear more about this soon. In four months since becoming Metro Mayor I’ve given funding to several other environmentally-focused projects. Bristol’s biggest visitor attraction, Brunel’s SS Great Britain, bagged money from the West of England Combined Authority, which I lead, for a heat recovery device to stop its hull rusting. Made by Husk, a Bristol company customising kitchen cabinets, received a grant for LED lighting and solar panels. Pentagon Play, a Bradley Stoke playground equipment firm, got money for energy-saving improvements to its building. Embracing pedal power, I secured £248,000 from the government for electric bicycles which make it easier to get around, leaving cars at home without having to be a lycra-clad fitness fanatic! Look out for details of taster sessions, training courses and loan schemes. That fits well with work just starting on a new cycling and walking trail, made possible by a £1 million grant from the West of England Combined Authority, around the stunning Chew Valley Lake, which is visited by thousands of people across our area, including me and my dog, Angel. Anticipating future challenges and finding solutions has always been key to progress, and there’s great work in that respect going on locally. At S&B Automotive in Bedminster I met

In a few weeks’ time COP26, the UN climate change conference, begins in Glasgow. We’ll be reminded again of what looms unless we take collective action. Just over 10 years ago I was Environment Minister: it was clear there was an emergency back then, but now it’s even more urgent. Code Red is real. It’s humanity’s greatest crisis. Let’s work together here in the West of England to play our part in beating it.

Opera society triumphs over adversity

J

ust two weeks before the curtain rose, the pandemic forced Bristol Gilbert and Sullivan Operatic Society (BGSOS) to cancel their 2020 production. The Society was faced with the combined financial loss of refunding tickets whilst still needing to pay the theatre and orchestra, and for a while the future of the society was seriously in doubt. Thankfully, a swell of support from BGSOS friends and members means the society can go on, and they will be returning to the stage in 2022. The Society had nearly sold out its four-night run of Yeomen of the Guard when the government announced the first lockdown. “It was a massive blow to our members,” explained Society Chair, Hannah Coleman. “They faced the disappointment of not getting to perform as well as the uncertainty of what could happen next. "It’s small thing in the context of a global pandemic,

but BGSOS means such a lot to its members.” The Society put out an SOS to its members and supporters, who responded warmly. Many ticketholders kindly chose to donate the value of their tickets rather than accept a refund, and several orchestra members offered their fees to the society. After just a few months, supporters had donated enough to cover the losses from the show. “It was amazing. We went from facing closure to being able to fully support our members. Now we’re going to be staging HMS Pinafore in April 2022, and we can’t wait!” said Coleman. BGSOS members range from children to the retired, and some

of its members live alone. “As well as music, many of our members depend on the Society for community and social activities,” Hannah explains. During the pandemic, BGSOS was able to offer a regular service hosting online quizzes and phoning isolated members, so that this community was kept alive. BGSOS welcomes new members to join for its 2022 production of HMS Pinafore. Rehearsals begin in September at St Teresa’s Community Centre in Filton, on a Tuesday evening. BGSOS is looking for performing members, scenery builders, costume developers and technical volunteers. You can also support us as a society friend, if volunteering is not for you. For details about all our roles, please email secretary@ bristolgsos.co.uk More information on our society can be found on our website, https://www.bristolgsos.co.uk, or via our facebook page, @BristolGSOS.

he Filtones Choir has survived the last eighteen months and will

relaunch with its first rehearsal on Wednesday, September 15th at a new venue – St Teresa’s Community Centre, at 71 Gloucester Road North, Filton.

We are an afternoon choir and rehearse from 1.45 to 3.45 p.m. every Wednesday with a short break for tea and gossip!

Special Offer - We welcome new members of all ages to join us free for the first four weeks to see if you like us. It’s undisputed that singing is good for your wellbeing! We are a four part harmony choir and are in need of all voices, sopranos, altos, tenors and basses. If you’re not sure of your range don’t worry as you will soon discover what suits you. We are a non auditioning choir, and although it’s not essential for you to read music, you will soon begin to assimilate this as a new skill, which is always good for exercising those grey cells! n MESSAGE FROM AVON & SOMERSET PCC

Speeding: a choice that puts others’ lives at risk

H

ELLO to September – and good luck to all of those who are starting or returning to school, college and university. Personally, I still cannot believe that we are almost three quarters of the way through 2021! My team and I continue to gather momentum and I feel well and truly embedded within the role. As I discussed in my last column, the police and crime survey, which closes on September 20, continues to be a focus and I am still calling on local people and communities to tell me what policing issues matter most to them by completing it. The feedback from the survey will help shape my Police and Crime Plan, a legal document that includes various aspects about the policing of the area, how the chief constable will be held to

account and how the PCC will use the money to deliver an effective and efficient service and support other services, such as victim support providers. We’ve had a great response already to the survey, but we want to continue to hear from as many local people, from all walks of life, right up until it closes. The survey is an opportunity for residents and businesses to tell me their views, thoughts and concerns about policing in their villages, towns and cities. As PCC, I am the bridge between local people and the police, and I want as many people as possible to tell me what they want their police service to focus on. The survey takes just 10 minutes to complete and will make a real difference to policing in your communities. You can find it at my website, www.

Filton MP Jack Lopresti

Afghanistan: vital that hard-earned security continues

A

s somebody who served in Afghanistan on Op Herrick 9 during the autumn/ winter of 2008/09, the recall of parliament this week was particularly poignant for me. As well as debating the situation in Afghanistan we also honoured the 457 of our service men and women, who made the ultimate sacrifice, and the more than 600 who continue to live with life changing injuries. I would also like to commend the work done here in our area by MoD DE&S, based at Abbey Wood. Throughout the operations in Afghanistan, they provided the equipment and logistic support to our forces there. To those who say that the operation wasn't worth it or has not been a success, let us call to mind the original objective, which was to destroy Al-Qaeda on the ground, deprive it of a base from which to mount

terrorist attacks across the world, defeat the Taliban and to keep our own streets safe. This was achieved. Our people, the Americans, our allies, and the Afghan army and police force achieved those objectives with honour and courage. Like most of my fellow MPs, I feel ashamed, angry and devastated by what I have seen happening in Afghanistan in recent days and weeks. I cannot help but keep remembering the ordinary people of Afghanistan and the locally employed civilians who not only risked their lives but, by helping NATO forces, risked the lives of their families,

friends and villages to Taliban reprisals. I was delighted and relieved beyond measure when the Prime Minister announced the resettlement and evacuation programme for refugees, which is a fantastic thing. The speed of the Taliban advance surprised everyone, and in fairness I think the Government acted as swiftly as it could. The Secretary of State for defence deployed troops as quickly as possible to help with the evacuation. The Prime Minister has been working with our NATO Allies and the G7. The UK has a great deal of hard-earned experience in the region. We should ensure that, along with our NATO Allies from Operation Resolute Support, we play a role in assisting those states who may feel the need for support if the regional security situation deteriorates. Western Allies, working

through NATO ,must strive together to ensure that the security we’ve enjoyed, whilst terrorists were denied a safe haven in Afghanistan, continues. Al Qaeda will be looking to exploit areas of instability so we must ensure that interference by neighbouring states does not allow Afghanistan to return to the situation it was in prior to the beginning of coalition operations. In November 2006, the then prime minister Tony Blair, speaking on a visit to Afghanistan, said: “Here, in this extraordinary piece of desert, is where the fate of world security in the early 21st century, is going to be decided.” So we cannot abandon the Afghan people and allow their country to once again become a base for international terrorism. To get in touch, call 01454 617783 between 9am-5pm, Monday to Friday, or email me on jack.lopresti.mp@ parliament.uk.

Filton gig as band back into the swing of things A local big band will be in Filton for their first post-lockdown gig. The Kris Nock Big Band’s Autumn Concert Series will be the group's first live performances since the beginning of the pandemic in March 2020 and their first ever theatre tour. The tour begins on October 2 at the Olympous Theatre in SGS College, Filton. The band is an 18-piece big band made up of 5 saxophones, 4 trombones, 4 trumpets, guitar, bass, keyboard, drums, and myself as director. Musicians travel from all across the UK to rehearse and perform with the band. They play all big band music and focus on performing works by more modern composers such as Gordon Goodwin, Alan Baylock, and Mike Tomaro. Kris says their aim is to engage a younger audience into a genre which has typically been focused on the Swing era, and

now focuses a lot on Funk, Latin and Rock whilst still retaining that big band sound that everyone loves. He said: "I began my musical journey at the age of 8 when I began to play trumpet in a local marching band, the 37th Kingswood Drum and Bugle Corps. As a student, I studied a BTEC in Music Performance at Filton College (now SGS College), and went on to study a

BA (Hons) in Music at Bath Spa University. I’ve been fortunate enough to perform at some great concert venues from St George’s in Bristol, to Carnegie Hall in New York. "I formed the Kris Nock Big Band at the end of 2018 after graduating from university, and during 2019 we won top marks in two competitive circuits, including Gold and Best Band in Concert at the Indoor Music

Games at SGS College (March 2019). As restrictions started to ease for professional musicians during the later part of lockdown, we were able to return to rehearsals and prepared for two performances that took place in December 2020 at The Forum in Bath. I think it’s fantastic that we’re able to return to live music. The feeling of being able to share live music with other people is indescribable, and a live audience provides an atmosphere which only adds to the unified experience for everyone." The tour dates are: • Sat 2nd Oct - Olympus Theatre, Filton Bristol • Fri 29th Oct - Dolman Theatre, Newport • Sat 6th Nov - Kingswood Theatre, Bath • Sat 18th Dec - Parabola Arts Centre, Cheltenham (Christmas Special) Tickets are available at www.KrisNockBigBand.com

Floodlit bowls comes to Bristol in ‘first’ for the sport Nearly 150 bowls players from 15 clubs will take part in a floodlit ‘first’ for the sport in Bristol in September. The Bristol St Andrew’s Club is hosting the first tournament of its kind in the city after they secured £27,000 from Sport England to install floodlights at their Derby Road green last winter. Among the sponsors are Local Voice Network, the parent company of Filton Voice. Clubs from the city and beyond will play games on three evenings over five weeks, beginning on September 15. It is hoped the tournament, organised in three leagues with promotion and relegation, will become a regular fixture in the sport’s calendar. Clubs involved are Bristol St Andrew’s, Ardagh, GB Britton, Olveston, Page Park, Redland Green, Avonvale, Bradley Stoke, Canford, Henleaze, St Anne’s Park, Yate, Greenbank, Long Ashton and SLAT (St Anne’s Park). The 18 teams will have eight players taking part. Winning teams in each league will receive prize money of £125 (£75 for runners-up) thanks to the main sponsors Nailsea Patio Supplies and others supplying the following shields: Steve Lewis Memorial Shield; David Whittle Memorial Shield; Dan Swift Shield; J & C Bowls Shield; and Voice Newspapers Shield. Planning permission from Bristol City Council means the club is restricted to just 20 evenings per year with the lights on but this will be enough for the tournament. Tournament organiser Pete Jones said; “We are incredibly excited to be hosting this tournament, the first of its kind in Bristol. “We are expecting bowlers from 15 clubs and the bowls will be very competitive in all three divisions. “Bowls is a great game under lights and we are hoping to create a fantastic atmosphere for players and spectators alike. “We have only been able to do this thanks to the generous grant received from Bowls England as well as the hard work of BSA members who have made huge improvements to the club over recent years. “Covid has had an impact on all sports but this summer has seen bowls return to something close to normality and we hope this tournament will be just the first of many over coming years. I would like to thank all of our sponsors as well as the local clubs which have agreed to take part.” For more information on bowls or to join Bristol St Andrews, call 0117 942 1103 or email info@bsabowls.co.uk Pictured above right, club chairman John Pearce with Pete Jones.
