by Rebecca Day Plans to demolish a garage and build a four-bed property in Kenmore Crescent have sparked a number of complaints from local residents. Neighbours of number 51 are concerned that the dwelling will be used as a house of multiple occupancy (HMO). They also worry that its location, at the junction where Kenmore Crescent meets Kenmore Drive, is “dangerous” and an “accident waiting to happen” as it will block the views of drivers using the road. They say that its proposed redbrick appearance is not in keeping with the street and that four additional parking spaces will cause a strain on what is already a busy road. Concerns have also been raised about plans to install a dropped kerb, which could affect a councilowned lime tree. Tony Francis, owner of 51 Kenmore Crescent, has defended his plans, saying that the impact on the area will be

Red Arrows thrill in Filton as new museum seeks memories of Concorde Do you remember exactly where you were on 26th November 2003 when Concorde graced the skies for the final time? Aerospace Bristol has created an online ‘Concorde Memory Map’ where you can browse a treasure trove of Concorde anecdotes and add your stories for others to enjoy. Your memories will also be added to the new museum’s digital archive – ensuring that they are preserved, ready to inspire the next generation of engineers. To celebrate the launch of the Concorde memory map, those
behind the new home of the last Concorde ever to fly invited the first 250 people who have shared their story and given a donation to a special preview event last month. Those 250 supporters were invited into Aerospace Bristol and took part in a Red Arrows photo shoot, standing in the iconic shape of Concorde as the Red Arrows flew overhead. Guests were then invited into the museum’s new Concorde hangar to enjoy an exclusive sneak preview of Concorde ahead of the museum opening later this year. Residents oppose plans to rebuild house From Page 1 minimal and the appearance of the street will not be compromised. Privacy will also not be affected and gardens will not be overlooked, he says. The architect behind the plans, Basil Woodward, confirms that, “there is no intention to build an HMO whatsoever”. Thirteen public comments have been posted on South Glos Council’s planning application website regarding the proposed development. Neighbour Pauline Thompson commented: “I cannot think of a more dangerous place to build a house with the amount of traffic using this road as a rat run on a daily basis.” Ian Wilmott said: “The property is a direct intrusion into both my lounge and bedroom and therefore I strongly object to the proposal. “On top of this, the existing phone wires going across Kenmore Crescent would have to be removed, and the enormous mature tree, in order to put in the drop down kerb.” Phill Bye said: “An additional dwelling with associated parking in an already overly populated and busy area is the opposite of what is required in an area with young children travelling on foot.” Christopher Gooding commented: “I could only provide support for this application if there was assurance that it could never be used for multiple occupation. With four cars going
in and out this close to a corner then it becomes an accident waiting to happen.” Rebecca Willmott said: “The house will block considerable light to gardens of the properties going down the hill behind it and will over look those gardens and affect the light and privacy afforded to those residents. “The proposal suggests the house is constructed out of red brick this is not in keeping with any other houses on the crescent which are all pebble dash in appearance.” The application has been approved by Filton Town Council. Mr Francis says that he has spent considerable amounts of money seeking expert advice to ensure that the proposed property was compliant with council regulations. He was due to receive a

council decision on July 7, but was still awaiting a response. He added that the situation with the lime tree has played a big part in the delay, but he has now received advice from a tree specialist on how to deal with the tree and its roots. Mr Francis, who will be building the property himself,
said: “The whole process has really dragged on. I was due to receive a decision by July 7, but I’m still waiting. “Every time we turn on the news, people are saying that there’s not enough houses and that we need to build more. But as soon as I try to build something, people object to it. “It’s a massive plot – big enough to fit a four-bed property. It will be no bigger than existing properties in the street. “The development complies with the rules set out by the highways department, and it will not overlook into people’s properties or gardens. “I’m a good builder and a decent family man, not some ruthless developer. I’ll make the property look good and suited to the area.” A South Gloucestershire Council spokesperson said: “There are a still a number of outstanding issues to resolve with this application, and as a result we do not anticipate a decision being taken until mid-September at the earliest.”

Group meets to plan fight against garden 'land grab'

The first meeting of the Save Elm Park Group consisting of councillors and residents was held last month. Officers were elected and a timeline was discussed for presentation of the petition against the land grab to South Gloucestershire Council. Since the meeting the timeline has become more clear as South Gloucestershire Council have confirmed the dates of Council meetings. We now intend to present the petition to South Gloucestershire’s Cabinet on 9 October 2017 which would give the Council sufficient time to put it on the agenda for the Full Council meeting on 8 November 2017. It is anticipated that the Inspector’s report will be available and will be discussed at the Cabinet meeting who will thereafter send it to the

Background
Last month Filton residents gathered to give a clear message to South Glos planners - keep your hands off our community garden! A new report by South Glos has identified a strip of land which will not be designated as 'green space'. This land covers around a third of the community garden and also the skate park, outdoor gym and boules court. It is estimated more than 200 trees would be lost, including the specially carved owl. Families, garden volunteers, residents and councillors gathered in Elm Park to form a line showing the extent of the land which could be lost. The proposal comes under the Policies Sites and Places Plan (PSP Plan) and South Glos Council said that in order to protect the whole of Elm Park, the plan must comply with national planning rules, which mean the council must make allowances for potential sustainable growth in the future. Full Council meeting on 8 November 2017 with their recommendations. Residents will be able to attend and present questions at the Cabinet meeting in the regular slot at the start at the meeting. However our main thrust will be at the Full Council meeting when we will have a longer time slot. Regarding the petition, at the time of writing we have 2,600 signatures so we have exceeded our target of 2,500, however we have recently learnt from South Gloucestershire Council that they will only accept signatures from residents or people who work in South Gloucestershire. We will inevitably have a number of signatures from Bristol residents given that we so close to the border and in respect of the online petition there will be signatures from across the country from people wanting to protect green space. With this is mind we have set a new target of 3,000 which
will give us a good buffer should South Gloucestershire choose to exclude some signatures. We are trying to make sure we get valid signatures and have started door to door collections, if anyone can help with this please contact me. The voting return slip is once again printed below in this edition of the Voice. Please use it if you are able and return to the Council offices. He was very supportive and vowed to do all in his power to stop the change of designation and any future development of the strip of land. Council could find other options and keep garden safe
At the end of August I had the pleasure of visiting Filton Community Garden within Elm Park. I had been contacted by several constituents, including Dave Mikkelson, about the recent threat to the garden and I wanted to catch up with the team of volunteers to see what progress had been made since my last over a year ago. As some of you will be aware, in their recent council plan South Gloucestershire Council have allocated a large portion of the Community Garden as land that can be built on in the event that the nearby road requires expanding. Whilst I understand and support the need for infrastructure improvements to cope with the increased demand on our roads as more people drive and more jobs are brought to our area, I believe that South Gloucestershire Council could find an alternative location to alter the road system.
I will be writing a letter to South Gloucestershire Council raising concerns as well as expressing support for the team behind Filton Community Gardens and their campaign to protect the long term future of the gardens. Despite my visit coming at a time when the garden is under threat, I would also like to highlight the work the amazing volunteers have done since my last visit to the gardens. The garden now features projects by schools, various local groups and has a thriving orchard making the gardens an excellent asset for the community. The hard work by all involved is amazing and I’d like to thank all of them for giving so much of their time. I will be following the work of the Filton Community Garden organising committee closely over these next few crucial months, and urge everyone to sign their petition that will be handed to South Gloucestershire Council in October.

Corbyn: Filton will have a Labour MP after the next General Election

by Rebecca Day “Next time, there will be a Labour MP for Filton and Bradley Stoke.” This was the vow from Jeremy Corbyn last month as crowds gathered at the BAWA Sports and Leisure Club to hear from the Labour leader. He visited Filton and Bradley as part of his bid to win the marginal seat in the next general election. It is at least one of 70 constituencies that Mr Corbyn aims to target during his national campaign tour. Conservative MP Jack Lopresti has held the seat for Filton and Bradley Stoke since 2010, but his majority was halved in the snap election this summer from 9,800 to 4,190. Speaking directly to the Filtonvoice, Mr Corbyn recognised the issues that
residents face in Filton, including traffic congestion, access to healthcare and cuts to education. Mr Corbyn told the Filtonvoice: “A Labour MP for Filton and Bradley Stoke would speak up for education needs, housing needs and speak up for its transport needs – that’s the difference a Labour MP would make to the area.” He received a standing ovation when he took to the stage at the BAWA, with chants of “Oh, Jeremy Corbyn” and “Jezzer, Jezzer” before his appearance. In his speech to the audience, Mr Corbyn thanked and congratulated Labour candidate Naomi Rylatt on her campaign against Mr Lopresti. She had increased the number of Labour votes in the area by 15% since the last general election. Mr Corbyn said: “Thank

He said: “The coalition made a choice that austerity is the only way to deal with the banking crisis. But the banking crisis should not have to be paid for by the young, poor and old – it should be paid for by those who caused it.” Mr Corbyn, who had been visiting Southmead Hospital’s cancer support unit earlier on in the day, commended those dedicated to working within the NHS. He pledged to reverse cuts to the NHS and challenge stigma around mental health, with more investment in mental health services. Mr Corbyn also spoke about tackling the current housing crisis and improving funding for public services. On Brexit, Mr Corbyn said that Labour would provide EU citizens full rights to remain in the UK. Speaking about education, he said that there are “too many children in classrooms, too many headteachers wondering how they will cope, and too many schools having to go down to four and half day weeks – it will take a Labour government to fix this”.

Ms Rylatt said: “His speech covered a lot of the topics that people in the constituency were worried about during the election campaign. “His thoughts on the underfunding of our education system and how we are failing to properly appreciate the value of the work done by the NHS staff through decent pay rises as well as the stealth privatisation were big topics on the doorstep and in all the hustings I attended. “I very much enjoyed meeting Jeremy. We discussed many of the issues in the constituency such as taccess to doctors' surgeries in Cheswick Village.” Mr Corbyn's visit means our area has seen both major party leaders in the past three months. In June, Mrs May visited Orchard School to launch a new initiative on mental health in schools.

Community association gets backing from Merlin dragons
Filton Community Association has received £3000 towards projects to improve facilities for disabled people after pitching in a Dragons' Den. Every quarter, local groups can ask for funds from housing association Merlin. They outline
their ideas and requests to a panel of Merlin customers – the dragons – who decide whether they are in or out with the funds they have available. The Community Association gave a confident pitch for £3000 to upgrade the washroom
facilities for disabled users at Filton Community Centre, creating a space the community can be proud of. Community Association administrator Oliver Newbery said: "Filton Community Association were delighted to be
awarded the funds from Merlin Housing with their Dragons Den panel. The afternoon was good fun and a nice way to offset the tension of an 'interview' situation, especially with so many people to pitch to. " It is great for us to get the funds at this time as well, as JMI Bathrooms started work on the gents last week and are nearly finished now, so we are eager to see the first fruits. "The old gents' was certainly 'well used' so the improvements are going to be dramatic for the centre, and we will have proper disabled toilet facilities at long last, opening our doors to a wider audience. Thanks go to Merlin Housing and all involved." The community group impressed the Dragons who okayed their total request. Stadium plan for Cheswick looks doomed A new stadium for Bristol Rovers at Cheswick now looks unlikely after it was announced deicussions with UWE have now been brought to a close with no agreement being reached. The Jordanian Al-Qadi family, under the name Dwane Sports Ltd, acquired 92 per cent of the club's shares in 2016 and in their statement, they said: “Dwane Sports is disappointed to announce that its discussions with UWE regarding a potential stadium development for the Club have been brought to a close as the parties were unable to agree acceptable terms. “We will now immediately turn our attention to exploring all other opportunities for a new stadium or for a substantive redevelopment of the Memorial Stadium, whilst at the same time continuing to develop the new Colony training ground.”
In response, UWE Vice-Chancellor Steve West said: “UWE Bristol has not given up on this hugely important project. "We have been and remain committed to delivering a new stadium and were disappointed

With the stadium not going ahead it may well be more difficult to attract investment into the area but it may increase the pressure on landlords Balfour Beatty to decrease the rents and get the empty units filled. What is certain is that the site will not remain green for ever. Construction of offices is one possibility but an extra 1,000 cars (for example) arriving every day would cause car parking issues that can already be described as chronic. UWE do own the land and their vision of having a stadium there, something no other UK university has, may not be dead.

The Stoke Gifford Branch of the Royal British Legion celebrated the work of one if its Student volunteers, Zak Ajjane, with a top legion award. He was awarded the RBL Gloucestershire County Certificate of Appreciation for his years of service. The award was presented to Zak at the Students' Union at UWE in August. Air Vice Marshall Ian Corbitt, the RBL Gloucestershire County President, made the presentation to Zak, which was attended by the Branch Chairman John Moloney, Branch President and County Chairman Brian Hewitt, and representatives from the SU and from UWE. Zak has volunteered for the RBL Branch since 2013 and has collected for the Poppy Appeal, and has been a branch bugler at Armistice Day Services and at Legion services. He also set up the Stoke Gifford Branch's successful Facebook Page. Professor Steve West, Vice Chancellor of the University of the West of England, said: "Zak is a student that has stood out. He has been a significant volunteer, engaging with the Branch and encouraging others to join in." David Bell from the Stoke Gifford Branch of the RBL, said:"Zak has been a dedicated, hardworking and inspirational volunteer." The 2017/18 appeal starts on the 1st of October and runs until 30th September 2018. The Poppy Fortnight runs from late October until Remembrance Sunday on 12th November. World praise for hardware built right here Sainsbury’s East Filton has officially launched a partnership with BRACE as its new Local Charity of the Year. BRACE, based in the Brain Centre at Southmead Hospital, supports world-class dementia research in universities in South West England and South Wales. The beneficiaries of the work are people all around the world who suffer from dementia. Support will help fund urgent research that aims to identify the causes of dementia, diagnose it earlier, and develop effective treatments. BRACE was chosen by Sainsbury’s customers through a public vote in store and online in June. The charity will now receive a year’s worth of support through fundraising and awareness raising from the store. Representatives from the charity joined Sainsbury’s staff in August

At Filton Park Pre-School Playgroup we had a fun filled Summer Term. We organised a train trip to Weston-super-Mare which was attended by 23 families. And we held a Sports Day in the Playgroup garden, where all children participated in a variety of races and other physical activities. The annual Sponsored Bounce raised close to £400. n EARLY YEARS EDUCATION Bidding begins for special Free School with nursery Children with severe learning difficulties in South Gloucestershire will benefit from a new Special Free School to help meet their needs, following a Government announcement that they will fund the construction of the new school. South Gloucestershire Council is now holding a three-month process to invite organisations interested in running the new school to submit their plans, showing how they would meet the needs of children and young people with Severe Learning Difficulties and Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties. The plan is that the new school will become a centre of excellence and provide schooling for up to 112 pupils, from nursery-age to post-16 education, opening as early as 2019. Researchers at the University of the West of England are inviting Filton residents to participate in a storytelling competition to win up to £50 in Amazon vouchers. The competition is part of the Drought Risk and You (DRY) Project which is aimed at providing new evidence for managing future droughts. You may have noticed the dry start to 2017 and the DRY project researchers have been working with communities in the River Frome catchment to find out about different experiences of drought locally and the effects it has had on people’s lives. They have learnt from residents who recall the sight of the River Frome running dry in the 1950s in Chipping Sodbury, and about the nursery in Yate taking children down to the cellar to keep them cool during the 1976 heatwave. Father Tom's farewell to 'Teresa's tipple'!
by Rebecca Day Long-standing Catholic parish priest Father Tom Finnegan will be bidding an emotional farewell to Filton this month, as he prepares for ministry in Trowbridge. The priest of St Teresa’s church will be succeeded by Father James Finan, 36, who was born in Bristol and is moving from St Mary’s church in Glastonbury. Father Tom says that he has had 13 “very happy years” as parish priest in Filton and latterly also at St Vincent’s church in Southmead. Particular highlights during his time in Filton have included hosting the relics of St Terese of Lisieux in 2007, which saw 8,000 people, from far and wide, visit the church. He has also enjoyed making cider – dubbed ‘Teresa’s tipple’
– with apples from the church’s orchard. Originally from Cheltenham, Father Tom grew up in the Forest of Dean before moving to Bristol in 1995 after being ordained as a Catholic priest in Cinderford.

Father James Finan will be holding his first mass at St Teresa’s on Saturday, September 23 September at 6pm.

Five years of tackling food poverty
SINCE opening in July 2012, 15,036 three-day emergency food supplies have been given out by the North Bristol Foodbank - of which 6,441 were for local children. North Bristol foodbank provides three days’ nonperishable emergency food to people who have hit crisis and every person who comes to the foodbank is referred with a voucher by a frontline care professional, such as a social worker or schools liaison officer. Having started with two locations five years ago, there are now four opening sessions that are run by volunteers across North Bristol, in Lockleaze, Filton, Horfield and Southmead. Year on year they have seen an increase in the number of food supplies given at these locations as local people continue to find themselves in crisis for reasons such as changes to benefits, losing work, or trouble with debt.
Over the five years, 49% of supplies were given to help people with delayed or changed benefits, 21% for issues with low income, and 9% to those struggling with debt. Stewart North, Chair of Trustees for North Bristol Foodbank, says: “When we started, we observed the real
need in local communities but never envisaged that it would grow in quite the way that it has. “Alongside local churches, we are now able to facilitate cooking courses, budgeting courses and an increasing holistic vision for supporting those who are vulnerable or in crisis locally. “We are also excited about
the launch of Feeding Bristol and the ambitious vision of a ‘Zero Hunger city’.” Since North Bristol Foodbank was established, 181,294kg of food and toiletries have been donated, the vast majority of which has come from members of the public in the area. Putting Filton in focus at free celebration event Filton residents can celebrate their community at a special event next month. It will be held on Saturday 7th October at Charborough Road School, Filton, BS34 7RA and from 1-4pm, local people can browse stalls, enjoy performances by local schools, enter a photography competition, find out about groups and meet people from local services like the police. The event is free, including light refreshments. This celebrating Filton event is also your chance to talk about Filton and ‘have your say’ in creating a town which benefits the whole community. We’ll celebrate what Filton’s achieved so far, from its community garden to its youth centres. Community development charity, Southern Brooks Community Partnerships, is working with residents, the Town Council and many organisations

Concorde pilots guests at VIP anniversary gala A VIP Concorde anniversary gala dinner event will be held at Aerospace Bristol, with Concorde pilots Christopher Orlebar and John Tye in attendance. Concorde is the most glamorous commercial passenger aircraft in history and at this exclusive VIP event guests will get up close and personal with the legendary jet. It will be held on Thursday 16 November. The event will give attendees the opportunity to follow in the footsteps of the rich and famous and step on-board this supersonic airliner. The evening will begin with a drinks reception and a private viewing inside the plane before guests enjoy their exclusive dining experience underneath the wings of this iconic aircraft at Aerospace Bristol. Live music will be provided by a string quartet
and an event photographer will be providing complimentary souvenir pictures from this very special occasion. Since the first prototype took to the air in 1968 until its last flight in 2003, Concorde was an impressive sight in skies around the globe. The anniversary gala event will be celebrating 40 years since the inaugural London to New York Concorde flight.
The guest speakers for the event will be Concorde pilots, Christopher Orlebar and John Tye. These two members of a very exclusive flying club will take part in a Q&A session to chat about their time at the controls of a jet that was capable of speeds in excess of Mach 2. Tye flew Concorde from 1997 until 2001 whilst Orlebar first flew the aircraft in 1976. Since
retiring from British Airways in 2000, Orlebar has been involved in writing, lectures and TV work about the history of the supersonic jet including his book, The Concorde Story. Aerospace Bristol opens this year and houses the final Concorde to be built and last to fly. The supersonic jet was originally designed, tested and manufactured in Bristol. The event starts at 7pm on Thursday 16 November at Aerospace Bristol. Tickets are available from £99 plus booking fee. English a highlight in a year of success
Students at Abbeywood have once again performed strongly in a range of subjects, making good progress and with some outstanding individual successes. Students performed particularly well in English, with 78% achieving a standard pass (new-style grade C) and 56% achieving a strong pass (old B). The results demonstrate that teachers know students extremely well. Around 54% of students achieved at least standard passes in both English and Maths, as well as an impressive 53% achieving A* or A grades in the separate Sciences. BTE Academy celebrates outstanding results ALMOST two-thirds – 61 per cent – of this year’s A Level students at Bristol Technology and Engineering Academy achieved passes of A*-C with 30 per cent at A* or A. Based in Stoke Gifford, BTE Academy is one of the UK’s University Technical Colleges (UTCs), which focus on the socalled STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). More than half – 52 per cent - of all A Level grades at BTE Academy in Maths/Further Maths were at A* or A while 76 per cent of grades in Maths and Science were A*-C, with a 100 per cent pass rate. Meanwhile 76 per cent of Engineering grades were at Distinction* or Distinction, with 14 students achieving maximum marks across all units.

Harry Dyte, who lives in Kingswood, is reading Natural Sciences at the University of Exeter. “BTE is STEM-focused so it has been ideal for me in terms of specialising in the subjects which I enjoy and am good at,” he said. Meanwhile many of BTE Academy’s Year 13 cohort are taking the apprenticeship route. Cameron McNeill, from Longwell Green, and Matthew Owen, of Bishopsworth, are both taking up four-year apprenticeships at Renishaw while Callum Isaacs, from Kingswood, joins Universal Balancing in Kingswood.

New exams but still success for Orchard students Orchard School Bristol has achieved a strong set of GCSE results in what has been a turbulent year as students and staff tackled the new tougher assessments. The school was delighted to report a 45 per cent standard pass rate (4 and above) in English and maths, with many individual success stories making Thursday, August 24, a day to celebrate. The change in the way results are reported for English and maths – using marks of 9 to 1 instead of grades A*-G – meant the school could not judge progress against previous years but outgoing head teacher Dr Helen Holman said pupils had excelled themselves. She said: “I am delighted for each one of the students and of course for the staff who have supported them to this stage. I am proud that these results demonstrate clearly the success that Orchard is achieving. “There are many individual students who have much to celebrate, including our four looked-after children, all of whom performed brilliantly. Our large number of young carers, too, have performed exceptionally well, having displayed real tenacity and perseverance. “This is a brilliant day for me as well as a really emotional one saying goodbye to a great Year 11, great staff and a great school. After 11 years I could not feel happier as I know the school and all who attend and work here have a great future and will go from strength to strength.” Among Orchard’s star performers is Isabella Lawson, who achieved a stunning 9 in English language, 8 in maths and English literature and A*s in eight other subjects as well as the creative writing AS level she had already achieved. Also celebrating was Ruby Smith, who was stunned to achieve 8s in English language and maths, a 7 in English literature, two A*s, an A, four Bs and two Cs. Her success in English was particularly sweet after what she described as a “disastrous” mock exam. She is now heading to Redland Green to study A levels in maths, philosophy and history.
Another taking another step towards her goal – that of becoming a doctor – was Ellie Boyd, who earned 7s in English language, English literature and maths, an A*, two As, five Bs and two Cs – in addition to the GCSE in classics she achieved in Year 9. Having already undertaken work experience at the Bristol Royal Infirmary, Ellie is now hoping to study biology, chemistry, maths and psychology A levels at North Bristol Post-16 Centre, with her sights firmly set on medical school. Also hoping to become a doctor is Mohammed Ahmed, who was very pleased to receive 5s in English literature and language, a 7 in maths, two As and six Bs. Mohammed, who secured work experience at Southmead Hospital, is now off to study A levels in maths, biology and chemistry at Redland Green – although he said he would miss “having fun” at Orchard.
Crina Koncsag arrived at Orchard at the start of the year from Romania but sitting her GCSEs in English proved no obstacle as her envelope revealed she had attained 7s in English literature, English language and maths, two As, two Bs and a C. She said: “I was nervous but knew I had studied hard. n SGS COLLEGE A LEVELS
Making the right choices for a better future SGS College’s A Level Campus in Filton was filled with smiling students last month, as hundreds of learners came into college to collect their results following two years of hard work. As in previous years, the College’s A-Level students achieved excellent grades. 50% of students studying Maths and Further Maths achieved an A* / A / B. Over 60% of students achieved A - C grades with excellent performance in many subjects, notably Psychology (75% A - C), Physics (75% A - C) and Law (71% A - C). Just under 2% of students achieved the highest mark, (A*). One such student collecting his results was 19-year-old Jack Bromfield from Bristol, who has
been studying at SGS for three years. Speaking of his experience Jack said: “In my first year studying AS Levels, I chose to study four subjects, two of which I didn’t particularly have an interest in. Inevitably I had a tough time with these subjects
so decided to start fresh the following year, only choosing subjects I was interested in. “My family were very supportive of my decision to start over. For me, it was the right thing to do. “My second year studying History, Film Studies and Business was far more successful. I truly enjoyed the lessons and the learning came naturally. Now after my third year I have the grades I need to go to university to study history.” And 19-year-old Yusuf Hussien was also collecting results, and was delighted to discover that he had the grades he need to go to university to study Genetics. Speaking of his journey Yusuf
said: “I didn’t realise there would be such a difference between GCSEs and A Levels. To me, it came as quite a shock, So I committed all of my time to my studies to stay on track. When I applied myself it made all the difference. The support I received from my family was also a huge help. They have always wanted me be the best I can be. "My teachers were also invaluable. Whenever I needed help or need resources they were always there to support me. “To those about to start their A Level journey don’t make the same mistake I did. Be prepared for the challenge ahead. Also, be prepared to work as hard outside the classroom as you do in lessons and you’ll do just fine.”

Pupils make the right moves in first chess competition Shield Road came third in their first annual chess tournament just before the summer break. There were 30 schools competing. Head teacher Mr Mepham said ‘Our year 5 class has been having chess tuition all year. "They have thoroughly enjoyed the experience and it has really improved their
mathematical and reasoning skills’. l As part of their RE education, children in Year 1 and 2 had a very interesting visit to the Mosque in Stapleton Road. The children were able to find out about what happens in a mosque and hear about the Muslim faith. The children had the opportunity to ask good questions and take photographs. There children learnt about the five pillars of Islam and the importance of giving to the poor in the Islamic faith.

n CHESWICK SUMMER COMMUNITY EVENT
Villagers have fun getting fit at summer community event

On a Saturday in August the Cheswick Committee held yet another in a series of community events for residents, this time comprising some football skills sessions, Zumba, pilates, yoga at Wallscourt Farm Academy, then followed by an evening pub Quiz at Boston Tea Party. Cheswick committee members Holly Stowell, Carly Dawson and Kirsty Edwards organised a few taster sessions in different sporting/exercise activities in order to get residents and their children out and about,
meeting new people and perhaps trying something new. The football sessions were provided by Bradley Stoke United FC coaches Phil Townsend, Matt Belgium and James Dawson and were very popular on the day with lots of Cheswick children turning up to have a go at some basic football skills and trying to score some goals against the coaches. The exercise sessions were provided by instructors who have weekly classes running from Wallscourt Farm Academy and they kindly offered their time to give a taster session to residents to try out. Zumba is run by Kristel Leech on a Wednesday 7-8pm and is a latin-based dance exercise class with great music to get you moving. The Pilates class is led by Judy Berry on a Monday at 7pm, it’s quite a relaxing class which is about awareness of your body and controlling your movements while you exercise, several members of the committee were very aware of their stomach muscles the next day! The final taster session was run by Saeed whose class normally runs on a Sunday from 7:30-8:30pm, this was class in Yoga which is about focussing on breathing and self-reflection. There were members of Saeed’s class who came to support this session who described the many benefits they get from attending the class and how Yoga has helped them with a wide variety of medical issues, fitness and wellbeing. Last but not least there was the Cheswick Summer Pub Quiz which was kindly hosted by

n CHESWICK SUMMER COMMUNITY EVENT Boston Tea Party. They extended their opening hours to 11pm for the evening as they have with the previous pub quizzes to allow the committee to create the ‘night out’ atmosphere of a pub quiz. Resident Sian Clarke was quizmaster for the night and lead the teams through several rounds of questions and a picture round. In the interval Philip Timm Photography provided a photo booth filled with wigs and props to capture the fun of the night in a great set of pictures. There were prizes won for 1st/2nd/3rd place and Wooden Spoon with a second win for the residents of Baily Place. Prizes were donated by the committee and also by Andy Parsons at All Angles CCTV who has got to know many of the residents while working in Cheswick. A great time was had by all who attended and once again the committee have had feedback appreciating the opportunity to get to know others and try new things for themselves and with their children.
The committee are already working away on the next set of Halloween events with their 3rd Halloween Trail in development and new for this year a Halloween Pub Quiz to be held in Boston Tea Party. The committee are very grateful for all of the support and feedback they get from the residents and they hope to be able to continue to provide social events for the foreseeable future. n FILTON LIBRARY Wilbur, aged 6, has won the Bird Box Building Lego Club competition at Filton Library! The bird boxes were displayed at Filton Community Garden Fete and the winner was chosen by a public vote. Wilbur’s winning bird box features multiple levels and a handy treasure chest to “keep the eggs safe!”. The box has been hung in Filton Community garden this August for any resident bird to make use of. Armed with a gift of binoculars and a bird watching guide from Filton Library you may see Wilbur scouting around the garden for creatures! The tools of the trade to keep your van safe We on the beat team know that people who feel isolated can also feel more vulnerable, so we’re trying to offer some reassurance ahead of the darker autumn nights. If you have a frail elderly neighbour or family member, let us know and we’ll visit to offer some crime prevention advice. We’ll also show them how to use technology to stay in touch by text or e-mail. Nominate someone for a home visit through the beat pages of our website, or by calling 101 and asking for the Filton beat team. The darker evenings mean we should all take more care on our roads, especially at the start of a new school year. If your child walks to school, please remind them how to cross the road safely – ideally using a pedestrian crossing, making
sure they can see clearly in each direction and always looking both ways. They should be aware of their surroundings, so not staring at their phone or listening to music so they can’t hear approaching traffic.
Make sure they wear appropriate reflective clothing, and if they cycle they should wear a helmet and have lights and reflectors on their bike. Those rules apply to adults as well! We’d like to remind anyone dropping children off or collecting them from school: • Never park on the yellow zigzags • Slow down • Respect the crossing attendant, if there is one • Park with consideration for residents We work with South Gloucestershire Council to enforce parking restrictions outside schools – they’re there to help keep our children safe. If you park on a double yellow line or a yellow zig zag, council enforcement officers can issue

Are you a child of the 90s? Play your part in cutting edge new research Researchers at the University of Bristol are calling on 24- to 26-year-olds living in Filton to take part in one of the most detailed health studies of its kind in the world. The Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (also known as Children of the 90s) is an internationally renowned research study, following the health and development of more than 14,000 families with a child born in Bristol and the surrounding area between April 1991 and December 1992. Researchers have used the data collected over the last 25 years to help answer important questions on key health issues, including asthma, childhood obesity, and dementia. Harriet, right, and Lisa from Horfield and Lockleaze, see case studies, are two of almost 4,000 young people who have already attended the most recent data collection clinic, Focus@24+, and taken part in a series of cutting-edge tests, including liver and lung function checks.
Now, with the Focus@24+ clinics drawing to a close this autumn, the Children of the 90s team is keen to hear from anyone living in Horfield and Lockleaze who was born in or around the city in 1991/2 and would like to play their part in building an even more detailed picture of the health of their generation. Case study: Harriet, 25, Horfield What is your favourite childhood memory of taking part in the study? Walking into a room to conduct a hearing test and seeing the walls covered in empty egg boxes. At that time, I had no idea they could be used to provide noise insulation and I was shocked and enlightened when the researcher told me why they were there. Why did you choose to attend a Focus@24+ clinic? I enjoy attending clinics and I understand how important it is to continue research, so it was never a question of whether I would go, it was just finding a time and date that worked. What have you enjoyed most about being part of Children of the 90s? I think having exposure to impressive science at such a young age helped me enjoy science and love learning about it at school. Attending clinics is always a
novel experience because you take part in different tests or use new machines. I’m sure my involvement played a part in forming my decision to study Psychology at university. What research discovery are you most proud of? Last year, they highlighted evidence that showed that playing video games rarely leads to bad behaviour. I thought this was great because it challenged the popular stereotypes that video games cause aggression. What advice would you give someone thinking about taking part? When I was younger, it was always a great excuse to get an afternoon off school, but now I know that I could be helping discover evidence that benefits society. If you get the opportunity to go, please do. You could be facilitating the next piece of evidence that helps save lives.

GP surgery seeks input from patients by Rebecca Day Northville Family Practice is seeking members to join its patient participation group. The group gives patients of the surgery the opportunity to comment on all aspects of the services it provides, the facilities it offers and suggest improvements. Karen Biddel, manager of the Filton surgery, said: “We welcome all ages, all walks of life and those with different experiences, and encourage those who want to have a positive impact on the surgery's future, to join the group. “We cannot promise members priority on booking appointments or to support any personal cause or health concern of an individual, but

hope members can see the bigger picture and the place of the surgery in the community. “Maintaining a GP presence in Filton since the retirement of Dr Redmond is very important for the community and its residents.” BrisDoc Healthcare Services took over the running of Northville Surgery in January 2016, after the practice’s future was left hanging in the balance when its management team and GPs resigned. The Patient Participation group meets quarterly with the next meeting due to take place in November. Those interested in being involved must be a patient at the surgery. Awards after season's goals acheived It’s been a busy few weeks for St Vallier Football Club. In May, several of the teams made the annual journey to Weymouth to take part in a local tournament. Then, later in the month, the club held their own tournament for the younger age groups as reported previously. In June the Under 12s won the prestigious Stoke Lane Tournament and, to bring the season to a close, the achievements of all the different teams were celebrated at the annual Presentation Event, this year held at Filton Hill Primary School. The decision to hold the Presentation Event during an afternoon rather than in the evening was agreed to have been a success and the occasion was enjoyed by children and parents alike. St Vallier is a club where enjoyment of football and playing the game in the right way is encouraged from the youngest to the oldest players. The club looks forward to growing and achieving more success in 2017/18.

The DIY group, which aims to tackle loneliness and isolation among men aged over 50, operates from the Scout hut in Nuffield Grove, providing a space to socialise, build, share skills and drink tea. Men in Sheds Filton is part of a national movement, initiated by Age Concern Cheshire in 2009 and sustained by the UK Men’s Sheds Association. There are now over 200 “sheds” across the country, with many more being developed. The group runs every Wednesday, from 9.30am-12.30pm. Filton Historical Group The Filton Historical Group was formed to encourage knowledge and appreciation of history, especially of that local to this area. Presently the Group arranges seven monthly talks which take place between September and April each year, and usually start at 7.30pm.
