Travellers living on the site earmarked for the new Bristol Rovers stadium were expected to be evicted within days (as Filtonvoice went to press).

They arrived at the ground in Stoke Gifford, owned by the University of the West of England (UWE), at 9pm on August 16.

The travellers have since been issued with an eviction notice and were set to leave the site by September 6.

According to a UWE spokesperson, there were around 30 vehicles in total, nine of which are caravans.

Budget store plans Plans have been submitted to South Glos Council for a budget supermarket on the site of the former B&Q store.

The B&Q store in Stoke Gifford closed down earlier this year and it is understood the new owners could be a store such as Lidl or Aldi A new store would be in competition with the Sainsbury’s store nearby.

Travellers set to move on from site of new stadium

From Page 1 to the site, have taken to social media to express their worries about the travellers, with some reporting incidents of fly-tipping and loud noise.

Regular updates from UWE were provided on the Cheswick Village Facebook page to ease concerns.

According to the university, they were informed by the travellers that they were visiting a member of the travelling community who was close to death, and intended to stay for two to three days.

It was also reported in the regional press that the travellers had settled in Clifton, Lockleaze, Horfield and Bedminister.

It is believed that they were visiting the city to pay their respects to Violet Crumlish – also dubbed as the ‘Queen of Travellers’ – who was being treated for bowel cancer at a Bristol hospital.

However, she has now reportedly been moved to a hospital in Ireland.

Keith Hicks, director of

corporate relations at UWE, said that the university has had “good dialogue” with the traveller since the site break-in.

He said: “The university is progressing with the removal of travellers from the land adjacent to the campus.

“We can confirm that court appointed bailiffs will attend the site on September 6.

“The travellers have been notified of this eviction date and have indicated they will leave ahead of the bailiffs coming to site. As soon as the land is vacated the entrance will be secured (with boulders).”

Security guards have been patrolling the area 24 hours a day since the travellers arrived.

Reported incidents have included minor repair work to fencing, and fly-tipping on the Cheswick Village estate. Police were also called to the site due to children throwing stones at the security hut.

However, according to UWE, the camp has generally remained tidy, with loud noise being kept to a minimum past 11.30pm.

People power: residents reject library closure as council throws a lifeline People power may have saved Filton Library.

The campaign to save the library in the face of South Glos cost savings has led officers to propose a new option called ‘Open Plus’ which would mean the library would be open for nearly 80 hours each week.

As Filtonvoice went to press, councillors were discussing the new proposal.

It follows a public consultation across South Gos which saw more than 3,000 responses - nearly 400 alone in Filton - with closures rejected by the vast majority of people.

In Filton, just one per cent of respondents preferred closure of smaller libraries other than large hubs such as at Patchway and Bradley Stoke.

Unions have said the ‘Open Plus’ would mean significant job losses and said the council should have instead taken money from the savings made by changes to green bin collections.

Under the proposed new scheme there would be vastly reduced staffing levels with many services being carried out by users themselves, such as checking out books. Security measures would be ever-present.

Filton was facing possible closure with the nearest services possibly confined to ‘hubs’ at Patchway and Bradley Stoke.

A huge public effort in Filton included protests

outside the library, and town councillor Joanne Ward gave an impassioned speech in defence of the library at a South Glos council meeting.

She said: “The original three options which were on the table were all very damaging for Filton. Our library would have been disproportionately affected by any of the original proposals.

“As I said in my speech to South Gloucestershire Council, that wasn’t fair and it wasn’t right and I’m glad the Council have recognised this and come up with a new proposal which is fairer across all libraries.

“The open scheme looks an interesting option and I can see how some residents and community groups could make use of the library using this scheme.

“I look forward to finding out more about how it could work and how the Council will address concerns such as security and safety.

“I have added the library as an agenda item for our next Filton Town Council meeting later this month and hope that once we have more details, including the number of staffed hours Filton library will have, that we can work together to get the best possible deal for Filton residents.”

“Filton Voice played a key role in the consultation, hundreds of residents had their say, schools gave their views and the Town Council were united in opposing library cuts. I think this shows what we can achieve as a community when we all work together.

“I am of course disappointed that jobs will be lost. Filton library staff are fantastic and I, like many others, would much rather South Gloucestershire Council put money to libraries rather than reduce the green bin charge.

“Unfortunately the Council are not prepared to do this and so I now think we need to work out the best deal we can get for Filton library users within the constraints that South Gloucestershire Council have set.

“I hope South Gloucestershire use the £225,000 predicted departmental underspend to benefit the library service and to mitigate redundancies for library staff.”

A South Glos spokesperson said: “Through the public consultation it was made clear that the Council was actively looking for a better alternative.

“Open Plus is currently being installed at Bradley Stoke library, and will go live later this autumn.

“As part of the public consultation on changes

to the library service, local groups including Town and Parish Councils were given the opportunity to express interest in working with the Council to secure additional opening hours to those funded by South Gloucestershire Council.

“Some Parish Councils have indicated they may be willing to do so.

“Several local authorities have successfully adopted Open Plus, developed by Bibliothec, which has led the way in introducing this facility nationally and internationally.”

The Council Savings Programme adopted as part of the 2014/15 budget set out savings of £812k to be achieved “by looking at future provision and how buildings and services can be operated more effectively across the council’s portfolio (for example through the potential development of community hubs)”. This target assumed £91k property savings.

The library savings target was specified as £500k, made up of a £484k saving in 2017/18 and a further £16k to be achieved in 2018/19.

In total the council received 3,644 survey responses as well as 94 letters and emails, 123 letters from children, two posters, and 13 petitions along with significant amount of feedback from public roadshows and through social media.

There were also representations from political parties and parish councils.

Open Plus - how it might work

Open Plus is the name of the system developed by Bibliotheca, who also deliver the self-service RFID system in South Gloucestershire Libraries. It allows usage by valid customers during hours when there are no library staff present. This is a system being adopted in many authorities in the UK having been launched in Denmark in 2011. It is used in both rural and urban settings.

Key features l Access - only valid users are given access – customers are asked to apply for Open Plus membership and the opportunity is used to explain that there will be no staff present but all other systems will be available. l Systems management – the system will turn on and safely shutdown the power for lights, alarm systems, computers, selfservice kiosks and other systems required for the library. l System integration – all the systems are integrated door access, barriers, building lights, public access computers, self-service kiosks, cameras, and security alarms. l Security - Camera surveillance provides peace of mind for the library users and deters theft and vandalism. However it is not subject to live monitoring and we would need to consider the costs of monitoring and data management. CCTV also provides added security during times when the library is staffed and may deter incidents of anti-social behaviour. l Messaging – a PA system delivers pre-recorded or your own custom messages to patrons when opening and closing. l Staff support - Open Plus complements the core staffing allowing the library to open longer on days when staff are present and also on days when there may be no staff due to work on that day.

Open Plus potential benefits in Filton lE nabling libraries to open additional days and times when there are no staff present, this will suit people whose personal lives do not allow them to use libraries in core hours (for example shift workers). lW ith reduced staffed opening hours Open Plus will take pressure off these hours and spread usage across more hours. l I t will enable use of the library space by other staff and agencies who can be given the access card (e.g. PCSO, locality based staff, agencies who need space to meet clients). l I t will provide working space for lone workers who may currently work from home or coffee shops.

... but unions fear for staff job losses Around 30% of library staff in South Gloucestershire could be sacked under the plans for the local service, despite the council’s own consultation showing public support for stopping library cuts, unions have said.

They say that with £650k of cuts planned over the next three years, the library service will see its budget (£2.6m) fall by more than one quarter. Options set out in the Council’s report on the future of the library service included so-called “Open Plus” staff-less libraries , much reduced staffed opening times and at least one volunteer-run library service.

The unions insist the impact of cuts could be lessened if Councillors ditched their plan to reduce Green Bin charges by £6 per year.

The move, forecast to cost £230k every year, has come under attack in recent weeks as a waste of the Transition Fund South Glos has received from the Government.

Andrew Went from UNISON South Gloucestershire Branch said: “Libraries are an essential service to the community and the Council has a legal duty to provide a library service.

“The Government is pushing council funding to breaking point across the country, but in

this case the councillors have made it worse by choosing a meaningless subsidy for green bins over a decent public service for local people. Finding funding elsewhere will be a challenge but we’d encourage the Councillors to re-consider.

“For example, the Community Services Committee is already projecting a £220,000 underspend in the current year and if continued in future years this would meet nearly half

the library cuts the Council is planning to make.

“We have considerable concerns about the impact of unstaffed libraries. People will be deprived of the essential support of professional staff, who help with far more than finding a book.

“Helping with jobseeking, learning and skills, support for families and a helping hand with form filling are all part of a library worker’s daily tasks.

Filton Hill Primary officially joins Olympus schools trust Filton Hill pupils and staff took the opportunity to formally mark joining The Olympus Academy Trust family of schools on Monday 5th September. Pupils enjoyed a special assembly, led jointly by the Headteacher, Mrs Kirsten Lemming, and the CEO of the Trust Mr Dave Baker.

by Rebecca Day A Filton man has run a staggering 423 miles in just under two weeks, raising thousands for charity.

Neil Hopkins ran the width of the UK – starting from Lowestoft in Suffolk to St Davids in Wales – along with friend Andy May, from Yate, and completed the challenge in 13 days.

They ran on average 29 miles per day, and reached their final destination on July 30.

Neil and Andy have raised a total of £3,300 for Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW), which has a local facility called Charlton Farm, and £670 for Cancer Research.

Charlton Farm, based in Wraxell just outside of Bristol, is a lifeline for families who

have children with life-limiting conditions, offering care and support during the most difficult times.

In addition to emergency, end-of-life care and bereavement support, many families use the hospice for much needed respite care.

The pair said: “We heard through a colleague how fantastic CHSW was in helping them through their bereavement and how the whole family was supported – this is why we chose to raise funds for them.

“Running the width of the UK has been a fantastic adventure and we want to thank everyone who has donated and sent messages; it’s been unbelievable.”

Celebration night for young footballers St Vallier Amateur Football Club, the home of junior football in Filton, recently held its annual Presentation Evening at Elm Park Sports Centre.

All the teams across the age ranges had achieved different levels of success last season and the evening was the opportunity to celebrate their accomplishments and also to show appreciation to those involved behind the scenes who work hard to keep the club going.

Contribution went to Emma Bailey for her tireless work organising fundraising events such as the Presentation Evening and Christmas and Halloween Parties, as well as dealing with the administration for both the Under 11 teams.

The Jon Counsel Shield for the Manager of the Year went to her husband Lee Bailey who has overseen two teams at the Under 11 age level, both of which had successful seasons. An auspicious evening for the Bailey household, but Emma was quick to acknowledge the contribution of Sophie Haynes and Lee has been assisted all season by fellow managers Jason Parsons and Reece Watkins.

The evening was a huge success and thoroughly enjoyed by players, coaches and parents.

St Vallier is a club where enjoyment of football and playing the game in the right way is encouraged from the youngest to the oldest players.

The club is proud of its association with Filton and looks forward to continued success in the future.

Pulling together for village sports day

Cheswick Village held their first ever sports day at Ashley Down Rugby Club on Sunday 4th September in the afternoon at Ashley Down Old Boys RFC. Organised by Cheswick resident Holly Stowell, this event was in collaboration with Snap Fitness- a new gym opened in Abbey Wood Retail park with prizes provided by Boston Tea Party (due to open soon in Cheswick) and The Treatment Room a beautician also in the village.

manager Ash Tuck was on hand to promote the gym and was our referee for the day. He had his work cut out for him organising the many keen little ones who were there!

He said: “The latest in a series of community events, the aim was to get as many families out into the fresh air as possible just to have fun and watch the kids have a run around with some games thrown in.

“We had all the traditional events such as egg and spoon race, sack race, 100m sprint

along with a slow bike race and tug of war.

“We had a good turnout for the ladies’ and men’s 100m races and adults tug of war.

“There was great competitive spirit among the parents in attendance!

“The kids’ tug of war was best of three and it was a 2-1 victory to the girls who just edged it over the boys who fought valiantly to the end!”

Club kindly offered the services of the pitch and clubhouse behind the new houses being built (‘Stanley Park’) which enabled the residents to become familiar with the rugby club and hopefully attract some new joiners to their new youth rugby section who train from 10:15 on a Sunday morning from age 3 and up.

A great afternoon was had by all and we hope to do it again next year. We now look forward to the return of Cheswick Halloween next month.

Being a Health Champion is voluntary, with a responsibility for promoting positive health and well-being in the local community, providing advice and signposting people to support services.

Health Champions receive free training, which will start in September or October, in 'Understanding Health Improvement' at Level 2 with the Royal Society of Public Health.

The opportunity is for people who regularly support others on a personal or professional level, and are looking to expand their CV. Previous achievements from Health Champions have included a ‘Memory Cafe’ for people with dementia, a men’s health pack, a cook book for food store clients,

Air ambulance crew drops in at balloon fiesta to share CPR skills Hundreds of festival-goers in Bristol have learned a skill that could one day save a life, thanks to the crew of the Great Western Air Ambulance.

Members of the Filton-based team held classes in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) at the Bristol International Balloon Fiesta in August. During the four-day event, 502 people were shown how to perform CPR, a vital skill that could make all the difference in the minutes after someone has suffered a cardiac arrest and stopped breathing.

The air ambulance team says in such cases early intervention in the moments before they arrive at the scene of an emergency can be crucial.

GWAAC head of fundraising and marketing Emma Carter said: “In a situation where someone’s life is in danger, every minute counts.

“We can be anywhere in the region we cover within 20

minutes, but the care that the person receives before we get there can play a vital part in their survival. Everyone should know basic CPR skills, and our team are passionate about helping people to acquire these skills, and giving them the confidence to use them if they have to.”

During the Balloon Fiesta the team taught CPR to children and adults, including the current Miss Bristol, Emily Sanders.

They learnt how to check if someone is breathing, and how to perform chest compressions.

Emma said: “The Bristol Balloon Fiesta gave us the ideal opportunity to talk to people, and teach them this vital skill.

In the future we are hoping to grow this campaign, reaching as many people across our area as possible. The more people that know CPR the more lives that will be saved.”

All ages get behind Poppy Appeal Volunteers and fundraisers of all ages have helped the Stoke Gifford branch of the Royal British Legion raise an impressive £49,000 for the 2015/16 Poppy Appeal.

Over the past year, the branch has welcomed support from individuals, local businesses and many other organisations, and has built on a valued partnership with the Students’ Union (SU) at the University of the West of England (UWE).

Bringing the generations together, branch member Jason Phillips completed a sponsored kayak from Reading to Bristol on August 6 with his daughter Georgia, who is a student at the University of Leeds.

Student volunteers from UWE have also been supporting the group’s work, as well as gaining valuable experience. Branch president Brian Hewitt MBE

Series goes behind scenes with hospital’s life-savers

Charity funds online ‘tour’ for patients Patients can get to know their way around Southmead Hospital without even leaving the comfort of their own homes.

A new photographic tour available online takes viewers through the Brunel building, showing them where to find key features, including the reception desk, patient check-in points, pharmacy, toilets and cafes.

The Inside Brunel tour has been funded by Southmead Hospital Charity through its Christmas Cracker grants scheme.

The charity’s Liz Bond said: “The Brunel building is impressive but its sheer size can make it seem formidable.

“Inside Brunel should give everyone confidence and reassurance in advance of coming here.”

Medics from Southmead Hospital have been featuring in BBC documentary An Hour To Save Your Life.

A film crew captured the work of emergency staff treating patients in the first 60 minutes following a call to 999.

They followed paramedics and doctors from Great Western Air Ambulance Charity and the trauma team based at Southmead between November 2015 and February 2016.

In one episode from the third series of the critically acclaimed documentary, staff are seen treating a young woman who was brought to Southmead Hospital after suffering head injuries following a road traffic collision and a man involved in

an incident with a fork lift truck.

In another episode a horse rider is brought to Southmead by air ambulance after suffering a fall.

Clinical lead for the hospital’s Major Trauma Centre, Dr Ben Walton, said: “An Hour To Save Your Life has been a great opportunity for us to demonstrate the work of our

Major Trauma service at North Bristol NHS Trust and how the different teams here work together to give patients the very best chance of survival when they have suffered multiple injuries that could lead to death or serious disability.”

An Hour To Save Your Life is made by Boundless Productions and the third series was shown during August.

Orchard: our best-ever GCSE results Orchard School Bristol is delighted to be celebrating its best GCSE results ever.

50% of students gained an A* - C in English and maths. 75% gained at least a C in English – a 10% increase on last year’s results.

Exceptional grades were also achieved by Year 9 and 10 students who undertook their Maths GCSEs early, and also three Year 10 students who were awarded AS Levels in Creative Writing.

These outstanding results are a testament to the hard work put in by students and staff, and are in addition to receiving a ‘Good’ Ofsted rating in October last year.

Students, staff and family celebrated at the school with balloons and ice cream.

There were many personal successes among our school leavers.

Holly Kaur achieved 2 A*s, including Punjabi and Geography, 9 As, an AS Level in Punjabi and a Distinction. She will be heading off to Redland Green in September.

Holly said: “I’m really pleased with my results – I think they’re really good.” Holly’s family also commented how proud they were, and that they knew Holly would do well.

Emily Mortimer, who achieved 6 As, 4 Bs and 2 Distinction* grades, has been accepted to study at St Bede’s in September.

She commented: “I’m so happy – I wasn’t expecting these

results at all. But I’m really happy with them.”

Year 9 student Max Grant took his Maths GCSE early and gained an A. He said: “It feels so crazy to get an A in Maths – I

was hoping for something high as I did well in my mocks, but I wasn’t expecting this.”

In addition, fantastic progress was made by school leaver Mohammed Aldomo, who came to OSB in Year 7 at Level 2. The school is incredibly proud of his achievement.

Improvement in all areas at Abbeywood Following on from their superb Post 16 results, Abbeywood Community School is celebrating fantastic GCSE results which show a strong trend of improvement on all key performance measures.

Strong showing across South Glos Schools in South Gloucestershire are celebrating success with significant improvements in their GCSE results.

Some 57 per cent of students in South Gloucestershire have achieved 5 GCSE A*-C grades including English and mathematics - an improvement of over 4 per cent from 2015.

Eight schools have achieved improvements over 10 per cent compared with last year’s results.

These results represent a lot of hard work by the students and staff across all sixteen secondary schools.

Cllr Jon Hunt, Chair of the Children Adults & Health Committee at South Gloucestershire Council, said: “The wait is over for thousands of students in South Gloucestershire who will be receiving their GCSE results today. I would like to offer my congratulations to them all. We know that they have worked extremely hard to achieve these grades and they should be

very proud of their individual successes.”

Meanwhile, early indications for A-Level results suggest that it has been another successful year for schools in South Gloucestershire.

A number of schools are showing improved results on last year. All schools have highlighted some special achievements and success for individual students.

The Castle School has recorded particularly high results and Downend School and Chipping Sodbury School are also celebrating significantly improved results compared with the previous year.

Ethan is first Abbeywood student to go to Oxford This year has seen a very strong set of results for post 16 students at Abbeywood Community School with some stunning individual performances. There has been an improvement in A Level outcomes by an average of a grade per student with 44% of students achieving A*-B grades.

Vocational outcomes (BTECs) are excellent and have improved again from last year’s strong outcomes with 97% of students achieving Distinction* and Distinction grades.

Highest achievers in Year 13 are listed below with their grades and destinations but special mention must be made of two students for their achievements: Ethan Martin has gained the grades he needed to study at Oxford University and is the first student from Abbeywood Community School to achieve that milestone.

IB success for Red Maids’ - again The first wave of Red Maids’ Class of 2016 collected the schools’ sixth set of International Baccalaureate Diploma (IB) results recently.

Outstanding A-Level results for QEH Pupils at Queen Elizabeth’s Hospital (QEH) are celebrating after another set of outstanding A-Level results with the highest number of A* grades the school has seen to date.

Almost 30% of all grades achieved by students were the top A* grade and once again A*/A grades have made up over half of all results awarded. For the 11th year running the pass rate at the school is 100%.

This success has extended right across the curriculum.

The Science and Art departments both have much to celebrate – not only have pupils from both departments achieved excellent results, but they are also preparing to move into the new £3million Science and Art Building. Nearly three quarters of all grades awarded in STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) were

A*/A grades and 100% of students studying Art and Design and Photography achieved A*/A grades.

taking up his place at Cambridge University (Queens’ College) to study Mathematics. Max Yuen will be beginning his degree course in History at Brasenose College, Oxford University next term, having achieved straight A* grades in English Literature, Latin and History.

George Gibbs, who is also celebrating straight A* grades, will be taking up his place studying Medicine at Birmingham University.

QEH also offers the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ), a skills-based qualification that develops the independent research skills of students and is viewed by leading universities as the qualification that gives a student’s application the edge.

Once again, all candidates sitting the EPQ performed extremely well with 75% of candidates achieving A*/A grades.

The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie,

by Muriel Spark

review by a Filton Library reader

“Give me a girl at an impressionable age,” boasts the protagonist of Muriel Spark’s best-known novel, the incorrigible, wicked Miss Brodie, “and she is mine for life.”

Much the same might be said about any reader encountering this short comic gem for the first time.

Within, six teenage girls – impressionable, romantic, yearning, endearingly heartless – are chosen to become “the crème de la crème” of their late-1930s Edinburgh school.

They are taken under Miss Brodie’s wing so that they might receive special instruction on matters of truth, beauty, art, love, sex… and, eventually, betrayal and fascism.

The girls (Monica, Sandy, Rose, Mary, Jenny and Eunice) are deftly sketched with a wonderful economy, as are the two targets of Miss Brodie’s affections, the one-armed art teacher Teddy Lloyd and the short singing master Gordon Lowther.

Miss Brodie’s nemesis, the terrible headmistress Miss Mackay, is another character to treasure – described so economically and yet so exactly – but it is Miss Brodie herself who will stay with you forever: utterly ridiculous in her self-importance and her posturing, yet completely irresistible and bewitchingly glamorous (and let us not forget that that was originally a Scots word

meaning “a magic spell or enchantment”).

Full of the blackest humour and a cheery amorality, this is nevertheless a poignant book.

The interleaved scenes of Miss Brodie, past her prime, thinking back and trying to establish which of her girls betrayed her possess a genuinely sweet sadness.

I will leave it to the reader to establish which of her set was responsible for her fall, and to experience the joys and the horrors of Miss Brodie in her prime.

Students build woodland bird boxes UWE student volunteers at a recent volunteering day built a number of Bird Boxes for the Sims Hill Community Woodland, which is round the edge of the Bristol Business Park near UWE, and Splatts Abbey Wood, which is near the MoD and Cheswick Village, near Lockleaze.

The two woodlands are delighted with the boxes, which they will put up at workdays.

Jenny Idle, Project Officer at UWE Volunteering said: “The students had a great time learning a new skills, alongside other highly skilled students from the Centre for Performing Arts.

“It is hoped that the bird boxes will have a lasting impact in the woodland and encourage a greater number and variety of birds to our local area”

Backing is given for combined mayoral authority Residents have given their backing to the creation of a new West of England Mayoral Combined Authority (MCA) and a £1billion pound devolution deal put on the table by the Government People in Filton and other parts of South Glos responded to a consultation on the issue with 55 per cent saying they backed it while 34 per cent did not. Others said they did not know.

Responses were received from across public, business, education and voluntary sectors – with the majority of people expressing overall support for the deal. Feedback was sought on four key areas of the proposed devolution deal: Decision making, Place (transport and housing), People (adult education and skills), and Business.

From the 2,011 responses received across the region; 1,109 (55 per cent) said that, on balance, they believe that a West of England Mayoral Combined Authority would benefit the West of England region. 674 (34 per cent) said that they did not agree, 176 (9 per cent) said that they did not know. 52 respondents (2 per cent) did not answer. Details have been published on the West of England Devolution site www. westofenglanddevolution.co.uk The public responded both online, on paper and in some cases directly to the Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG).

Information and surveys were made available through local libraries, and One Stop Shops, as well as via parish councils and community facilities.

Together, the three councils will submit a joint consultation report to the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government. The Secretary of State will review the findings of this consultation alongside the Strategic Governance Review, the proposed Governance Scheme and any other representations that have been made directly.

Cllr Matthew Riddle, Leader

of South Gloucestershire Council, said: “I would like to extend my thanks to everyone who took the time to respond to the devolution consultation.

Overall, the majority of people who responded to the survey in South Gloucestershire said they thought that a West of England Mayoral Combined Authority would benefit the region.

“The next step will be for the Secretary of State to consider the results before deciding whether the deal goes ahead. Finally each council will be asked to endorse their decision and all three authorities will come to a balanced view about what will be best for their areas.”

If it is agreed that the MCA should go ahead, there would be elections for the position of West of England Mayor across all three local government areas – Bath & North East Somerset, Bristol and South Gloucestershire – in May 2017.

‘Pop-in’ Monday Lunch Club – we still need you!

St. Andrew’s Methodist Church at Elm Park has been running two “Pop In” lunch club sessions on a Monday and Wednesday for 21 years where a two course meal plus tea & coffee is provided at a very reasonable cost to elderly residents of Filton (up to 30 per session).

Not only do they provide a hot, cooked meal, it is a chance for people to meet, chat and socialise over lunch whereas they might otherwise be isolated.

A spokeswoman said: “The Wednesday session started back on 7 September after a summer break and it was lovely to see everyone enjoying their lunch and catching up with each other.

“However, the lady who cooked for the Monday lunch

club has now retired after 21 years’ service, and we are in desperate need of someone to take over this role so that this valuable service to the community can continue.

Children’s charity starts new search for ‘ambassadors’

Barnardo’s is looking for local volunteers to act as ambassadors for the children’s charity.

A special group is being set up to raise awareness and funds by leading community activities across Bristol.

The charity runs a shop in Filton, as well as in Stoke Gifford, Henleaze and Fishponds, and is now hoping to build on its local support by launching a Barnardo’s Helpers Group (BHG).

Barnardo’s regional fundraising manager Gurdev Singh said: “We currently have more than a hundred BHGs across the country, some of which have been supporting us for more than a century.

“Volunteers meet on a regular basis and make the most of any fundraising opportunities by

linking with their local schools, youth groups, sports clubs and businesses.

“They also arrange their own events such as coffee mornings, luncheons and quizzes. Bigger groups even organise their own charity balls.”

Members of the group would receive full support and training from the charity, which will also help with recruitment, promotion, defining roles, responsibilities, policies and procedures.

Barnardo’s can also arrange for speakers from local children’s services to visit groups, which are open to people of all ages and backgrounds.

Gurdev said: “Some may simply have a few hours to spare for a good cause, while others may want to develop skills and

Men in Sheds in Filton is extending its hours to meet demand.

The DIY group, which aims to tackle loneliness and isolation among men aged over 50, operates from the Scout hut in Nuffield Grove, providing a space to socialise, build, share skills and drink tea.

Men in Sheds Filton is part of a national movement, initiated by Age Concern Cheshire in 2009 and sustained by the UK Men’s Sheds Association. There are now over 200 “sheds” across the country, with many more being developed. The group runs every Wednesday, from 9.30am12.30pm.
