oug Daniels was a tireless public servant, a dedicated campaigner, a gentleman, a wonderful friend to many, a beautiful writer and much loved by all - but frankly, all of that fails to do justice to the man. He was not a big person physically but in truth he was a giant, possessed of a formidable intellect and able to see what mattered in an issue, never seeking personal gain. He transcended the pettiness of party politics which made him something of a rarity. Doug would stand shoulder to shoulder with whoever he felt was on the side of right. He believed in his party but there was never any edge to his contributions, whether written, or spoken in the council chamber, however strongly put. A well-known member of the community and member of another political party recalled to me how a group of them would work hard for their own
candidate but if Doug’s name was on the ballot, he got their vote! Doug was a marvellous writer with a unique turn of phrase and a clarity which eluded most. His contributions to this magazine, like most things in his life, were magnificent. These articles, which would start life handwritten with few mistakes, would then be carefully typed up and delivered, always on time and often with photos taken by Doug himself. Editing was never required. On a personal level, this is a time of great sadness. Doug supported Filtonvoice from Day 1 - in fact, he appeared on the cover of the first issue with a wonderful account of his visit to the WWI graves in France. I will miss him for his writing and his support but more than anything, I will just miss Doug. He was unique and kind and in this town, we will come to see him to be irreplaceable. He really was Mr Filton. Richard Coulter Editor and publisher

Doug Daniels 1922-2015

A life dedicated to others
He was a gentleman, a friend to all and an unstinting champion of the Filton community whose like we will never see again. Doug Daniels has died at the age of 93, his passing marked by a vocal chorus of both sadness and tributes in equal measure. He died in Southmead Hospital last month after suffering a severe stroke at his home in Bradley Stoke. He has been remembered by countless friends and associates in numerous walks of life, as well as members of his family. Right up to his death he was a tireless worker for the community and had recently taken on the considerable responsibility of chairing the Filton Town Council finance committee. Doug was born in Accrington, Lancashire, in 1922, attending Clitheroe Royal Grammar School before embarking on a career at the highest level in engineering. Doug’s father Ernest suffered terrible injuries at Passchendale in World War I which meant Doug was unable to attend university. He began his working life with Rover before moving to RollsRoyce in Derby then Bristol, which became his home. Doug never married and after the death of his father, he devoted his life to his mother Agnes (also known as Mary) and the many causes he took up. After settling in Bristol, he was elected as a Conservative councillor to the former Northavon District Council in the late 1980s. Yet his days as a councillor were only one facet of his community activism. He was active in the Filton Twinning Association, the Filton Community Association and in recent years he was one of
the most vocal supporters of the campaign to save the Filton Airfield. At Rolls-Royce, where Doug was a senior design engineer, he had worked on the mighty Olympus engine for Concorde and it was a matter of profound sadness for him when it was announced the airfield would be closed, with homes to be built on the site. He tackled the campaign with his usual mix of determination and courtesy, pressing decision makers and writing extensively in several newspapers. Doug loved music, especially big band numbers, and he played the drums. He also organised several concerts at venues like the Colston Hall, including one which raised money to send underprivileged children on a trip to Belgium. Doug was also a Freemason and held the London Grand Rank of Assistant Organist with the Grand Lodge of Freemasonry for Men and Women. He was also editor of their quarterly news letter. In recent years he was elected onto Filton Town Council which he served with his usual dedication. When his apartment block at Newleaze House was demolished, Doug ensured that wherever he was relocated, he would still be able to be a Filton councillor. At last month’s meeting of the council, a moment’s silence was held for Doug. Amid calls for a permanent memorial for Doug, council chairman Darryl Colllins said he agreed, describing Doug as a ‘first class public servant’. l Doug’s funeral will take place on October 16 at Filton Church, St Peter’s, at 1pm. All are welcome. A private family cremation will take place later on the same day.

Doug, centre, with Norman, left, and Peter
Family memories by Doug’s niece Penny Carpenter
Norman and Peter Fenner, Doug’s cousins, were evacuated from Birmingham to Rimmington to stay with Douglas and his family in 1941. They all lived together for a year (Peter, Norman, their sister Florence and their parents) with Douglas, his mum Agnes (also known as Mary) and dad Ernest. Peter and Norman’s mother and Agnes were sisters. Florence - Peter and Norman’s sister - passed away a few years ago. Douglas was the eldest of the children and had already left school by the time they were all living together but Norman tells the tale of how Agnes forbade Douglas from smoking so he and Norman would go off for walks down the country lanes and Douglas would defiantly pull out a pipe! The deception worked a treat until he failed to put out the pipe before putting it back in his pocket and it burnt a hole in his jacket. He apparently wasn’t too old to get a slap round his legs from his mother - who was tiny. Agnes was a formidable woman. She worked a number of different jobs each day just to keep the family together as Ernest could no longer work. The snow in those war years often drifted to over 10 feet but despite her tiny frame, she always made sure the newspapers reached the farms. She loved singing and would often burst spontaneously in to song. This must have been in part where Douglas’s love of music started. Douglas never forgot how much his mother had done for him and for his father, and he made sure that he looked after her as she grew older. He took her to all the events he was involved with and showed her nothing but patience and kindness. His dedication to his work and to his mother meant that the family he had always wanted, eluded him. He would have made a terrific husband and father. We are only grateful that he played such a large part in our family and was so clearly respected and loved by all of those who knew him.

Doug Daniels 1922-2015 Cllr Trevor Jones, Chairman, Filton and Bradley Stoke Conservatives Douglas Daniels, the mould is broken… They definitely don’t make them like that any more! I have only been fortunate enough to have known Douglas for a few years, but as with everyone else, he welcomed the opportunity to chat as though one was a long lost friend! While the record shows that Dougie arrived in Bristol over 40 years ago, following a move from Rolls-Royce (Derby), precision engineering was just one of his many skills. He had a long record in local politics. Besides his high profile activity supporting Filton Airfield, over many years he was a Conservative member of Filton Town Council. He had also served as a Conservative Member of Northavon District in the late 1980s and was unsuccessful in standing for election as a Conservative for Thornbury South in the first South Gloucestershire Council elections in 1999. In addition to his regular forays into journalism and his role as an impresario, Dougie worked tirelessly for local and national charities. His colleagues regarded him as a formidable force when working on behalf of the community. At the time of his death he was Chairman of the Filton Town Council Finance Committee and President of the Filton Community Association. Dougie also worked
tirelessly for the Twinning Association between Filton and Witzenhausen in Germany and St Valiers in France. One only has to glance at his report on last year’s visit to France in an earlier edition of FiltonVoice to recognise the enthusiasm that he applied to everything he became involved in… “Mr Tambourine Man” the heavenly choirs await your arrival!
member of Filton Town Council. As well as his civic duties he was an accomplished drummer, a good friend to many and will be sorely missed by the residents of Filton and all those who knew him.
Filton Town Council have agreed to honour Doug with a permanent memorial as no one deserves it more than he. Filton lost a hero when Doug passed away and I doubt we will ever see the like of him again.

There is every possibility we may never see Doug’s like again when we remember him working tirelessly for the good of the Filton community, his campaigning and support for issues like fighting to Save the Filton Airfield, his work with the Filton Twinning Association, his long and outstanding role as a town councillor and recently chair of Finance, his countless letters to regional and local newspapers and his wholehearted support as chair of the Filton Community Association but also his fund raising for a number of charities. There is no doubt Doug’s passing will leave a massive hole in Filton’s Civic Life. Rest in peace, Doug.

Doug Daniels trip to France by coach, which, almost 40 years ago, would have taken a very long time with no overnight stops. He travelled to France with us last year, where we stayed overnight in a hotel near Reims. On one of our exchange visits we recall vividly how during a meal in Romans, France, he played the piano in the restaurant we were eating in. He was also an accomplished drummer, and in fact we have a CD by the small jazz group he played with. Doug over those years was our publicity officer and he had a wonderful gift with written words. He is also fondly remembered by twinning members in both Witzenhausen and St Valliersur-Rhone, Doug will be missed at our committee meetings both here and abroad. Thank you Doug for being a genuine Twinning member; a talented musician and an excellent wordsmith.
Oliver Newbery, Administrator, Filton Community Association Doug was a man who loved to help people. He would take pleasure in going out of his way to make a positive difference to someone else’s life. He spread his goodwill across a large portion of the community for a long time, being involved in community centres, councils, charities and local groups. For Doug, giving up his own time for others was his life, and he would have been lost without it. We should all raise a drink and doff our cap to Doug, who went on helping until his last days. I miss him already.
Pat and Brian Smith, Filton Garden Club A great loss to Filton. Doug was a true gentleman who worked tirelessly for the good of the community. We loved listening to stories of his life. We will miss him and his wonderfully descriptive reports on our Garden Club trips. RIP Doug.

Doug added real character to our meetings, often having an anecdote to share about his own schooling, or drawing on a life experience. Doug was a lovely man, who had a good sense of humour and a twinkle in his eye. He was a true gentleman who will be missed in the Filton community.
And on Facebook, residents have been making their tributes Ken Hoare So sad. He was a remarkable man and he will be sadly missed on the streets of Filton and on the Town Council. Rikki Teml He was a great servant to Filton and a gentleman and an overall great guy. When I started as a councillor he gave me lots of great advice and was always willing to help others. Melanie Drewitt The best councillor Filton has ever had, his passion for the area and saving the airfield never faltered, he never gave up. A true gent, Filton won’t be the same without him. Shortly before he died, Doug wrote this piece for publication. In its title and content, it seems to sum up the kindness of this marvellous man
The Helping Hand Whilst waiting at a bus stop recently I perceived an elderly lady - presumably in her 80s – struggling to reduce the height of a large hedge that obscured the view from the front widow of her home. Standing on a wobbly pair of steps she was reducing its height from around eight feet to a respectable five feet using a pair of “shears”. They appeared to be no more than scissors. Cutting one twig at a time. It would take her till doomsday. I doubt if she will finish it at all. In another situation quite recently a regular deliverer of “FiltonVoice” was scratched quite badly on the face when wending his way to a resident’s doorway. From gateway to letterbox was a wilderness. However does the postman survive? Perhaps he has already given up! It was with these incidents in mind that prompted me to consider what help could be given to some householders who through either age or infirmity, or both, are finding it difficult to keep their surroundings in a respectable state. A meritable undertaking
enabling men with time on their hands to collectively get together to discuss their leisure pursuits has recently emerged. It is called ”Men in their sheds.” FiltonVoice August Issue Page 8. Perhaps they could be introduced to this particular problem. Members could follow up locations identified by councillors to enquire if they could possibly help. It would at least give them an opportunity to get “a breath of fresh air” to see where they can help. From my own perception there are several areas where help could make a difference. It would help to allay constant criticisms that tend to give Filton an “untidy” description. Many residents tend to reject “interference” from councillors yet I feel sure several would readily appreciate offers of help from charitable organisations with time to spare. They would feel at home in a garden. Tea and biscuits? Cup of coffee? Most certainly! Residents would I am sure be only too grateful by offering a just reward. All they need is that “HELPING HAND.” Douglas Daniels

Doug Daniels 1922-2015 His ‘epic’ speeches, understanding of history and passion for preserving Filton Airfield made Doug Daniels a force to be reckoned with in the campaign to save the site. Here, one of the leading campaigners reflects on Doug’s impact.
Not long after BAE Systems announced their planned closure of Filton Airfield in the spring of 2011, I attended a public meeting at Filton Community Centre to hear the arguments being put forward by the company, the council and other parties, and to add my own voice to the obvious concerns of the local community. One after the other, members of the public stood and made their points to the assembled panel but one person struck a chord so loud, with such eloquence and emotion, that everyone turned and watched his impassioned oratory with a grin. A wisely bespectacled gentleman spoke in a northern accent about the importance of the history and the potential that the airfield held for us all. He put into words better than anyone
else what others were feeling and the huge round of applause was the first of many I would hear for Doug’s epic speeches. After that meeting, I talked with several like-minded people, including Doug, and we decided to meet again and form “Save Filton Airfield”. Over the months, we held our weekly meetings; Doug was unfailing in his enthusiasm at every one. It soon became clear that here was a man who not only persevered when it felt like the world wouldn’t listen, but who stepped up his game in defiance. Every week he would come along, sometimes with friends, and would pull out of his little leather briefcase responses he had received to the myriad letters he had penned (with a good, old-
fashioned fountain pen – Doug had writing too neat to waste on emails!) from Lords, MPs, councillors, entrepreneurs and many captains of the aerospace and aviation industries. After the meetings, I would give Doug a lift back to his modest flat on the other side of Elm Park and he would usually invite me in for a cup of tea. Before the kettle ever went on he would apologise as he made a small place for me to sit amongst the floor-to-ceiling piles of correspondence and paperwork he had accumulated over many years. It was apparent that Doug’s enthusiasm for our own campaign was just a small part of the dedication he had poured into a whole array of causes and charities over the years.
Over those cups of tea, Doug recalled with fondness and cutting humour tales of his life as pioneering jet engineer at Rolls-Royce from his humble beginnings in Lancashire, via Derby and finally Filton; and it became clear to me that I was with someone who had this most amazing intelligence, almost hidden by his humility, matched only by his selfless dedication – not only in what he contributed to the world in his work, but in what he gave to his adopted community in his personal retirement. In losing Doug Daniels, we have all lost a kind and true champion. I will miss him deeply. Bert Hindle Save Filton Airfield campaign

Retirement home residents call for crossings on ‘dangerous’ route by Rebecca Day Elderly residents from Concorde Lodge say that more adequate crossings are needed at Filton Roundabout. Many from the retirement flats on Southmead Road say they are either risking their lives to dart across the junction, or having to walk at least 100 yards for a safe crossing – all in order to reach the shops located diagonally opposite the village. The only safe crossing available at the roundabout is at Link Road, by the Filton Community Garden. Sheila Pope, 78, a resident at Concorde Lodge, said: “I’m still quite agile, so I risk crossing the road near the roundabout using the islands – there’s no way I’m walking up and down hills with bags of shopping. But for older residents it’s not as easy. “I’ve seen some residents in
their 80s and 90s having to walk all the way down to Springfields, or down to Golf Course Lane, and all the way back up again, with their walking frames and sticks. “It’s extremely difficult for them – we need better crossings.” Another resident living at Concorde Lodge, who prefers to remain anonymous, said: “Having to walk all the way to a safe crossing is a lot of effort. I find it hard, and I’m quite fit.
“I’ve also seen a lot of people trying to cross at the roundabout, but it’s so dangerous.” They added: “It also doesn’t help that they are planning to make Gloucester Road North wider to improve traffic flow. While I fully understand why the council is doing this, it’s going to make crossing even more difficult. “I’ve asked the council many times to do something about the roundabout, but they always
tell me that nothing can be done.” Filton councillor Roger Hutchinson said: “This has been looked into extensively by me with officers, and I am currently arranging to visit the residents with an officer to discuss the issue again.” A South Gloucestershire Council spokesperson said: “We are currently working on a scheme to improve traffic flow and increase capacity at the Filton roundabout by extending the three-lane westbound approach and widening the carriageway. “We are aware of residents’ concerns regarding the difficulties crossing at this location, and our transport engineers will be attending a meeting with a Filton councillor and local residents to discuss and consider these concerns.”

This is what OFSTED said about the quality of learning in Reception at our last inspection in 2013: ‘Good teaching, in particular the early identification of children’s needs, means that they make good progress throughout their Reception Year’. ‘In the Early Years Foundation Stage, children enjoy the right balance between teacher-led activities and those they initiate and they work in a positive, collaborative learning environment’. ‘There is a positive atmosphere around the school throughout the day. This is because relationships between pupils and with adults are very good. Pupils are happy at school, cheerful and courteous and are confident that teachers and other adults treat them well and have their best interests at heart’.’ Please book a visit today!

Ava, 5, gives up her locks for poorly children By Rebecca Day With a name like Ava Lock, it seemed right that the five-yearold had always cherished her long, golden hair. She even found it difficult having a trim. But the brave youngster from Cheswick has now decided to take the plunge, and donate her hair to the Little Princess Trust – a charity providing real wigs for children undergoing cancer treatment. Her mum Lucy-Anne joined her for the challenge, which also raised over £380 for the Children’s Hospice South West, which supports children with life-limiting illnesses. They are now both fashioning
short bob haircuts, pictured right, and have been heartened by the support they have received from friends and family. Lucy-Anne said: “My daughter has always loved her hair, never wanting it cut – even just for a trim. “I was brushing her hair one day and telling her that some children don’t have hair because they are sick and the medicine they take makes their hair fall out. “A couple of months later Ava came up to me and said she wanted to cut her hair, so she could give other girls a chance to be like Rapunzel. “She got a bit upset, so upon making a pinkie promise we

by Rebecca Day Plans to develop a rear garden in Tenth Avenue into three two-bedroom houses have been rejected by a governmentappointed inspector. The application relating to 1 Tenth Avenue was submitted last year by architect firm Quentin Alder – which specialises in building in sensitive locations – but was later rejected by Filton Town Council and South Gloucestershire Council, following strong opposition from neighbours. The architect’s plan to build into the side alleyway, which connects Tenth Avenue to Fourth Avenue, was of particular concern to residents. They said that it would infringe on neighbours’ safety, as the alleyway gates – installed to prevent burglaries and vandalism – would be in “constant use” due to the proposed additional parking for up to five cars. Other concerns also included a loss of privacy for residents living opposite the proposed houses, and increased vehicle movements in the alleyway. Twelve objections were lodged in total. However, Quentin Alder defended its plans, saying that the buildings had been carefully designed with residents’ security concerns taken into consideration, and filed an
appeal to the Secretary of State. The Planning Inspectorate visited the site on September 9, but found that the proposal would harm the existing area’s appearance and would result in unacceptable harm to highway safety. The appeal was dismissed on September 24. One resident said that they were “very relieved” that the appeal had been dismissed. “Why should we have to take what the countryside don’t want? Developers need to stop trying to build in built-up towns ... there’s just not enough room.” A South Gloucestershire Council spokesperson said: “The appeal lodged against our decision to refuse planning permission has now been decided by the Planning Inspectorate. “The inspector found that the proposal would harm the well-defined character and appearance of the existing area and would result in unacceptable harm to highway safety. For these reasons the appeal was dismissed.” Quentin Alder, director of the architects, said: “My client and I are very disappointed that these carefully designed, high quality and energy-efficient houses will not be constructed and will not be available to reduce the shortage of sustainable homes.”

Men urged to join Mario’s ‘Mo Bros’ to help campaign by Rebecca Day Put down your shavers and grow your ‘taches. This is the message from local barber Mario Parrinello, who is hoping to raise awareness about men’s health issues next month. It is the sixth year that Mario, owner of Filton Barbers, has taken part in Movember – a month-long campaign that raises vital funds to treat prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental illness and physical inactivity. He got involved with the charitable cause as he has family members who have had cancer. Mario adds that it is also the perfect annual event for a barbershop. This year, he is hoping to raise more than £2,000 – the amount he achieved in 2014 along with his team of “Mo Bros”, when he grew an impressive handlebar moustache. It is not yet know what ‘tache Mario is planning to grow this time round, but he says that he is wanting to do something “wacky”. To mark the start of Movember, Filton Barbers will be hosting a special
evening on October 31, starting from 7pm, with a hot towel shave, and complimentary drinks and nibbles for £15. The month will then culminate in a “Big Shave Off” on November 30, where mo-growers will receive moustache removal and a complimentary drink for £5. All proceeds will be going to the Movember Foundation. Mario said: “This is the perfect yearly event for Filton Barbers, and raises money for a great cause, so I urge anyone who wants to join the team to sign up.” To sign up, search Filton Barbers on the Movember website (uk.movember.com). It costs £10 to join, and free haircuts are awarded to those who raise more than £100. Whoever raises the most will receive Hairbond hair products worth over £50. There will also be a prize for the best moustache donated by The Shave Doctor. For more information, call Filton Barbers on 0117 239 3288, like “The Filton Barbers” on Facebook, or follow @ thefiltonbarber on Twitter.

Outstanding again ... community garden wins more praise from RHS Coffee and cake The award winning Community Garden was, for the second year, the venue for a Macmillan event on Saturday 19 September. The sun shone and lots of people came along to enjoy a cuppa and some of the delicious cakes on offer, as well as admiring the garden itself. Organisers had the support of local companies Artisan Hire, Asda (Abbeywood), Tesco Express, Morrisons Local, Treasure Cards and Gifts, Cala’s Flowers and Brewer’s Fayre and a big thank you must go to everyone who helped on the day and who came along to support the event - we raised £410.79 which is a great result! Jeanne Clements (Organiser) During July the Community Garden was inspected by the RHS assessor Ian Murphy. As in previous years it was a new assessor and a fresh pair of eyes. The Committee turned out in force to welcome Ian and showcase the garden. We were able to show him the progress which had been made over the previous twelve months with the creation of the wonderful wildflower bed, the garden maps, roses encased in obelisks and further community engagement with plots developed by South Gloucestershire and Stroud College and Filton Twinning. Ian, a keen member of Portishead in Bloom was clearly impressed with what had been achieved in the garden and particularly in such a short period. His words of encouragement were a gratefully received by the Community Garden volunteers, what he could not divulge however was his recommendation to the RHS of the award we were to receive, we would have to wait until September to be informed. Early on 24 September garden members Cllr Bill Moore, Cllr Anne Kenyon and Helen Johnson set off for Dartmouth Naval
College where the RHS annual awards were to held this year. In this stunning location and joined by many of the 600 applicants our group waited with some trepidation for the results of the In Your Neighbourhood category. As the tension mounted it was announced that Filton Community Garden had once again been awarded the highest category of outstanding for the second year running. Bill and Helen were presented with the certificate and greeted by words of encouragement from Ian and Barry Cruse who judged the garden last year, reiterating that the garden is one of the best of its type in the South West. Such praise and the encouragement we receive from the community makes all of our efforts worthwhile and gives us the incentive to further enhance the garden and to this end we have recently allocated a plot to Filton Scouts and in conjunction with rose expert David Austin planning rose beds at the entrance to the garden. We will shortly be planting up the Concorde Beds for Spring, why not come along and help you will be very welcome. Dave Mikkelson Chair, Filton Community Garden

Music, art and activities celebrate role creativity plays in healthcare A two-day event at Southmead Hospital highlighted the role that arts and creativity play in healthcare. The Brunel building was filled with song, dance and colourful creations as the hospital hosted its second community arts festival, showcasing some of the projects that patients, relatives and volunteers have been involved with as part of the North Bristol NHS Trust Fresh Arts programme. Japanese visitors from the University of Tsukuba held workshops inside the atrium, helping people make origami, demonstrating calligraphy, and creating cartoon characters out of colourful washi tape. Choirs – including those from local schools and the Royal Mail Choir which featured on BBC’s The Choir – performed we_poppin ad 87x120:Layout 1 throughout the two days, while
musicians played for patients on the wards. North Bristol NHS Trust director of nursing, Sue Jones, said: “The festival was a really vibrant event that engaged both staff and patients who enjoyed everything from origami-making to contributing to the wood work art piece. “It was lovely to see young people – the Japanese students and local school choirs – contributing to health and wellbeing in the hospital along with members16:47 of community 17/06/2014 Page 1 choirs.”

Town Council roundup Consultation anger over station bus axe
A transport campaigner told the town council they should have been properly consulted on the decision to remove the only bus which serviced Filton Abbeywood rail station. David Redgewell said the X18 service, which was funded by government money through South Glos Council, should not have been withdrawn without consultation involving the public. He said the service was not commercial despite the council saying it had been withdrawn for commercial reasons. Mr Redgewell said there were four current services which pass the station and which could stop - the 625, 501, 502 and X74. He said: “Abbey Wood is a major rail station so why is there no public transport link. It’s an long walk from McDonald’s (site of the nearest bus stop). “ Three buses to Southmead Hospital go past the door but don’t call. It was outrageous not to go through the town councils.” He urged the town council to raise the matter with South Glos.
Credit union: ‘Use it or lose it.’ Katie Donovan of Southern Brooks has appealed for people to use the credit union facility in Filton. The Credit Union is open every Thursday and is ideal for those who struggle to open a regular bank account. She said: “This is a ‘second chance’ for those who don’t have the best credit. “We’ve had lots of interest but only six accounts. “We might have to review if we don’t get enough people through doors.” She also praised the work of the domestic violence drop-in service in Filton which has seen more than 20 women through the door, with seven severe cases. She said: “It’s sad that it is happening but the service is brilliant.”

Charity rejects grant offer for hall costs The leader of the Filton-based Filton Chest and Heart charity has again accused the council of putting organisations like Filton Twinning ahead of his own group. In an acrimonious exchange with town council chairman Darryl Collins, Mr Smith repeated his view that local charities should not have to pay to rent town council facilities. He said organisations like Twinning received favourable treatment from the council. Mr Smith rejected an offer from the council of a ‘grant in kind’ which would have offset the £10/hour his group pays for events like coffee mornings. He said his group had raised more than £30,000 for medical equipment. Mr Smith said: “We thanking Clr Ian Scott for his suggestion of a grant in kind but we will be turning it down and will pay £10/ hour for pavilion.” Mr Collins said all groups had to be treated the same and Cllr Scott said the policy had been agreed by the council and could not be revisited for another six months.

FA honour for club’s chairman The Gloucestershire Football Association has honoured a man who has revitalised youth football in Filton over the past eight years. Ray Edwards, the chairman of St Vallier AFC, was highly commended by the sporting body for his outstanding contribution to community football at the association’s annual awards. GFA chairman and FA vice-chairman Roger Burden presented Ray with a plaque and said he felt the future of the club was in safe hands. The award recognises the work Ray has put in at St Vallier since 2007, rebuilding what was once one of the area’s top youth football clubs but had dwindled to just one team. The club now has more than 120 children on its books with teams representing each age group from under-15s down
n St Vallier Youth Development kickstarted the season with an entertaining game versus Hallen FC, which for the majority was their first ever game
to under-eights, as well as a thriving youth development section for under-sevens and under-sixes, securing the future of St Vallier. The club, which works closely with Filton Town Council, plays games at Elm Park and uses the Ratepayers Arms and facilities as its base. Mr Burden said: “We in Gloucestershire are doing really well as a county but football in general is flourishing. More and more children are coming into it and more and more women are likely to play now, while many team sports are declining.” St Vallier has opportunities for all boys and girls who want to learn to play football, with raining for under-sixes to under-15s most Saturday mornings. A Filton-based charity is urging local women to bag up their old bras and put them to good use as part of a new fundraising initiative. The Great Western Air Amblance Charity team has teamed up with recycling partner Bag It Up to host Bag A Bra Day on October 22. The charity will be placing collection points around the area where people can drop off old bras, whether they’re looking a
bit shabby or have broken clasps or missing straps. A spokesperson said: “You can also swap a D-cup for a teacup! Host a coffee morning with your friends and get them to bring over their old bras, and if possible a donation too, in exchange for coffee (maybe even a bit of cake!) and a natter – all guilt-free because you are helping us to save local lives.” To find out more, visit www. gwaac.com.

As I write, Bristol Poetry Festival is drawing to a close following a glorious fortnight of readings at venues in and around Bristol. From the hugely popular Bristol Poetry Slam, where the cream of the West Country’s performance poets battle it out on stage, to smaller, low-key gatherings in cafés and the back rooms of pubs, poets and lovers of poetry have been coming together to celebrate our national artform. The flagship event of this year’s festival was the reading at Arnolfini by three of our best contemporary poets, Fiona Benson, Kei Miller and Liz Berry. Colin Brown, the director of Poetry Can,

the Bristol-based organisation responsible for organising the Poetry Festival, said: “There were three essential poetry books published in 2014 and we are lucky enough to have the authors of those books here in Bristol tonight.” Each poet was very different but equally distinct. AngloScot Fiona Benson read poems that showed how hearts can be
broken by language; Kei Miller made language sound like music; Liz Berry took us gently by the hand and led us to the place where poems come from, and it was both thrilling and beautiful – but you can’t describe poetry, you can only experience it. “That was wonderful,” said one audience member as we emerged into the September

Drivers are ignoring the 20mph limit We have lived in Filton Avenue for less than three years and three times the metal posts have been run over. These posts are outside our house on the short north side of Filton Avenue and placed where the road narrows to slow down traffic. Recently a car hit both these posts and ‘took off’, leaving a long trail of oil on the road. This year the council took away the ‘cushions’ to be replaced by ‘tables’ across the road. This has not been done because there are two drains in the way. There is a 20 mph speed limit,
filtonvoice
but many take no notice, and since the cushions were removed we have noted more speeding along this road. And money was wasted on those silly, painted white bicycles - no way is this a cycle track! Too many cars parked in the road. Fortunately no one was injured in the recent incident. The police were here and the fire brigade to hose down the oil in the road. But this is a serious accident waiting to happen, Mrs Annemarie Begley Filton Avenue

Development could improve our lane I’ve been a resident of Filton for nearly 10 years now. I think I may be Filton’s only YIMBY (Yes In My Back Yard)’. Re story in September’s Filtonvoice about plans for homes in the lane behind 10th Avenue, I live overlooking the land to the rear of a house in Mortimer Road which backs onto a ‘lane’. Clearly the residents of 10th Avenue are fortunate with their lanes and I can see why they wish to protect them
October, 2015
However, the private land to the rear of the house which I overlook, which is not owned by the residents, is repeatedly in an unacceptable state. It has attracted fly tippers and builders’ waste and been used by local landlords in their annual clear out to dispose of items left by students in their property. The land has seen many late night deliberate fires to dispose of waste which have then been left unattended. In the last two and a half years the fire brigade has attended seven incidents at the site at a cost to the tax payer
We live in a city and we need homes The development at Elm Park looks OK. It is on the very busy A38 and the Police station was hardly an architectural gem. Please donate your unwanted items
I’m writing to invite your readers to join me in turning unwanted items into life saving research this month for the British Heart Foundation’s Bag It. Beat It. campaign. Over 15,000 people die each year with cardiovascular disease in the South West, but with donations to Bag It. Beat It. campaign this September, the BHF will be able to fight harder to reduce this figure. I’ve donated to my local shop and I’d encourage everyone to get involved this September and do the same. Simply fill a bag with unwanted clothes, shoes, books, handbags, DVDs, CDs, bric-abrac and children’s toys, to Bag It. Beat It! Residents must register cars to use Sort It sites Changes including a resident vehicle registration scheme are being introduced at South Gloucestershire’s recycling centres to deter commercial users people who live outside the area trying to use them. From October 1, opening times at the area’s four Sort It centres changed to 8.30am until 4.30pm, which will apply all year round except Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day. As part of the overhaul, Filton residents’ closest Sort It centre at Little Stoke will also no longer be closing on Wednesdays. To reduce the number of people from neighbouring council districts and commercial users visiting the centres, South Gloucestershire residents will be asked to register their vehicles to access the sites before a vehicle registration scheme is launched in 2016. An electronic permit scheme for vans will also be introduced. The existing automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) system will be updated and used to implement the registration schemes and residents will be informed when they can register online, over the phone or at the council’s One Stop Shops later this year. Chair of South Gloucestershire Council’s communities committee Councillor Heather Goddard said: “Changing opening times at
the Sort It centres is the first step to making improvements to the sites and reducing the number of non-residents and traders using the facilities. “After reviewing the number of visitors to the centres, we found that there were very few people making use of the extended opening hours in the summer. The new opening times reflect the times that most people use the centres and also allows the Little Stoke Sort It Centre to be open seven days a week instead of closing on a Wednesday.” The communities committee agreed to the changes to improve the operation of the sites on July 22. The recommended changes followed a public consultation carried out between November 2014 and February 2015. Residents can look out for more details on their collection calendars and at www.southglos. gov.uk/sortit. For information about what can be accepted at the Sort It centres, where to find them and van access, visit www.southglos. gov.uk/sortit or call 01454 868000.

Celebrations as Filton home is 250th to be refurbished ready for winter A Filton woman’s home has become the 250th to receive a refurbishment aimed at making it warmer and cheaper to heat. Jayne Rumney said she thought the work to install new external wall insulation to her property was “wonderful”. The refurbishment was carried out as part of a £20 million scheme launched by housing association Merlin in 2013 in partnership with housing specialists Keepmoat. Jayne said: “I’m so grateful. I could notice the difference straight away. The rooms stay warmer for longer. And I’m actually looking forward to this winter and hopefully having lower heating bills. “The house looks absolutely wonderful from the outside as well. Now when I walk down the
Abbie Toman, Adam Portman and Jo Sims present Jayne Rumney with a bunch of flowers to mark the 250th completed refurbishment road I’m proud when I look at my house – I feel like the queen of the street. And it makes me want to take more care of my home, to
keep everything looking so good.” Project manager Richard Hopkins said the team was delighted to have reached the
milestone of 250 homes that more than 1,000 properties would benefit from the improvements under the scheme. He said: “In total we’re going to be fitting insulation to more than 1,000 properties and we’re now looking to increase the rate of improvements to more than 200 every year. “We’re committed to improving the energy rating of our properties and giving customers a warmer home that is cheaper to heat. It’s great to hear comments from residents like Jayne who are already feeling the benefits of the work. We’ve had lots of comments from customers whose homes we improved last year saying that their energy bills over the winter were noticeably lower, which shows the difference we’re making to people’s lives.”

Fireworks fear
Fireworks? I know the 5th November seems a long way off when we are still hoping that we might get some summer but it is not that many weeks away. It is best to think and act ahead, for example ADAPTIL and FELIWAY are particularly effective if used for several weeks beforehand. There are several steps pet owners can take to minimise stress during firework season: • Create a den. Provide a place where a pet can feel safe that is protected from the noise and flashing lights. • Plug it in. Plugging in an Adaptil diffuser will provide further comfort to dogs as it

The diffuser should be placed close to the den. • Plugging in a Feliway diffuser for cats can help them cope with changes to the environment as it releases a copy of the facial pheromone cats deposit when they rub their head on items in the home – marking them as safe. • Shut it. To avoid the possibility of a pet escaping during the season make sure all windows, doors and cat flaps are securely closed. Welcome distractions • Provide distractions in the form of new toys and chews. Draw the curtains and put the TV or play music on to mask the noise of any fireworks going off. • A man’s best friend. Try not to leave pets alone for lengthy periods of time as this could make them agitated and nervous. • Don’t act up. Owners need to try to act normal while the fireworks are going off and ignore any fearful behaviour. DO NOT punish pets as this will make them more distressed.

Free power from the air There are a growing number of devices we carry around with us that need electricity. The number of devices that will connect to the internet is increasing, especially with the growing number of wearable tech items that are available. It could be a hard task to keep replacing the batteries in all of them. A man called Lord Drayson has developed a system that can
harvest energy from current wireless networks such as mobile phones and freesat. Called Freevolt, it picks up the already existing waves in the air and converts them to electricity. These then charge the battery in your device. It might not be enough to power a phone, but could power items like wearable technology or smoke alarms. It doesn’t need any extra power to be transmitted by the wireless companies. Whether these companies somehow
demand a fee for this remains to be seen. Other scientists have developed systems before but this is the first where enough power has been harvested to be viable. Keeping all our mobile devices running and charged is going to be an interesting challenge if we cannot use a car charger or get to a socket to top it up. Whether this new development becomes viable we will have to wait and see. l See advert on Page 6
