Cars deliberately set on fire in quiet Filton street

Two cars were deliberately set on fire in Rannoch Road in Filton in the middle of the night.

Police say two men were witnessed running away from the blaze.

Police were alerted by Avon Fire & Rescue Service to a car fire in Rannoch Road, Filton, at about 3.30am on Friday, September 27.

Fire crews called back a few minutes later to report a second car fire on the same street.

Both vehicles had been

parked are believed to have been deliberately set on fire, police said. House-to-house enquiries reveal that two young men were seen running away towards the A38 at around the same time.

Anyone with any information which could help their enquiries is asked to call police on 101. Alternatively call the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

motorcycle caught fire following a collision on Gloucester Road North in Filton on Sunday, September 29.

No one was reported as being seriously hurt in the crash between a car and a motorbike which happened at about 11.15am.

Fire crews attended to deal with the fire and the road was clear by midday.

South Gloucestershire Council recovered the motorbike the following day.

Multi-occupancy plan for former doctors’ surgery

A number of interesting planning applications have been submitted to South Glos in the past month.

Among them, the former Concord Medical Centre on Gloucester Road North could be converted to “multiple occupancy housing”.

The surgery was at the centre of controversy after the decision to close it, with patients saying the trip to the main Concord site in Little Stoke was too far.

Filton town councillors have expressed some concerns over parking and toilet provison and have requested a site visit.

Not far from the surgery, an application has been resubmitted to demolish the Texaco garage and replace it with five ‘retail units’ and parking while a licensing application has also been submitted for this site.

This appears to be unconnected to an application made by Morrisons for the next door former Motaman site.

New bus service for Filton A bus service just for Filton is now a reality after £50,000 funding was secured to obtain a vehicle.

Details of the service have not been finalised but it is understood the bus would run a regular service across all three wards in Filton, filling in the gaps not provided by the larger commercial services.

This will be of particular benefit in Conygre which has been without a proper service for some time.

Funding has come from the Local Sustainable Transport Fund (LSTF) as part of a £600,000 initiative across South Glos.

Filton councillor Ian Scott said much of the credit must go to Katie Donovan of Southern Brooks who was instrumental in pusing the project.

He said: “Katie Donovan deserves a lot of credit for ensuring this was a successful bid. This will enable us to work with Four Towns Community Transport to deliver a bus service in Filton especially in the Conygre Ward which has suffered from a lack of bus services since First Bus withdrew their services.”

The service will be run in conjunction with Four Towns &

Vale Link Community Transport which runs an on-demand service currently.

A meeting of Filton Town Council was told that the new service would possibly cover all parts of Filton as well as Monks Park Avenue, Parkway train station and the main shopping areas, including the redeveloped Abbeywood Retail Park.

A South Glos spokesman said: “A number of schemes promoting sustainable travel in local communities throughout South Gloucestershire have been approved for £600,000 of funding through the Local Sustainable Transport Fund (LSTF).

“The LSTF is a central government funded project running across the West of England to increase sustainable travel. A total of £600,000 funding has been allocated to support a range of projects across South Gloucestershire which have been suggested by communities, voluntary groups and schools.

“The maximum amount of funding that could be applied for was £50,000 for each single project, and a total of 18 individual projects have been awarded funds.”

the Planning, Transportation and Strategic Environment Committee, said: “This funding comes as welcome news and will further improve sustainable transport facilities in South Gloucestershire.

“This additional funding boost will deliver a sustainable travel legacy for generations to come.”

Mario’s close shave for men’s charity

Filton barber Mario Parrinello will be doing his bit for the men’s cancer charity initiative ‘Movember’. Mario, who runs the barber on Gloucester Road North, will be doing some hot towel shaves at the Swan Hotel in Almondsbury.

On October 31, he will give participants a clean shave to start them off then, on November 31, he’ll shave off the moustaches.

During November each year, men grow moustaches to raise vital funds and awareness for prostate and testicular cancer.

Lights set to stay off in Filton amid Time difference

Residents have noted that while the official times for the part lighting are midnight-4am (summer) and 1am-5am (winter), the lights appear to be switching off before the stipulated time.

It is to do with ‘solar midnight’ which shifts around depending on the time of year and does not match midnight by our clocks.

Because the streetlights are triggered to switch off at solar midnight it means that in early November they will turn on and off earlier then expected, “on time” in late Dec and later than expected by mid Feb.

Filton Town Council is unlikely to ask for a rise in the parish precept to turn street lights back on for four hours at night.

Lights in the town have been switched off since South Glos implemented its plans to cut costs and lower emissions.

Under the scheme, parishes have the option to raise money through the parish precept (the element of council tax levied by the town council for Filton spending) to turn them back on.

According to figures from South Glos, the cost to turn the lights back on would be roughly 62p per month per council-tax paying household.

Precise figures are not available but Filton has roughly 1,000 lights and South Glos estimates 600 are on part night lighting. Engineers say the cost to turn the 600 lights back on would be £50 per light, making a £30,000 bill for Filton.

fears for safety With roughly 4,000 homes paying council tax, this would give a monthly extra payment of £7.50 per year, or 62p per month per household.

Since the scheme began in Filton, residents on social media have complained that they do not feel safe returning to home at night. Others have said the lights are being switched off before the published hours - midnight4am in summer and 1am-5am in winter.

On Facebook, one resident said: “It really is pitch black. My neighbours are in bed when I get home so you don’t even get a shard of light from their lit up rooms.”

Another said: “It get’s very dark now we have no street lighting. When I come in from a work callout in the early hours of the morning, it’s like playing pin the tail on the donkey trying to get the key in the front door.

It isn’t going be fun when the bad weather comes, or someone falls over the recycling bins in the pitch black.”

At the September full town council meeting, councillors said they were concerned that South Glos was passing street lighting and other services back to the parishes.

However Councillor Brian Mead said that if there was a groundswell of opinion, the town council would have to consult with residents on what they wanted to do.

A South Glos Spokesman said: “South Gloucestershire Council (SGC) needs to make significant financial savings and reductions in CO2 emissions over

the coming years. This is to meet national spending targets as well as our commitment to reduce the Council’s carbon footprint under European legislation.

“The Council currently has approximately 29,500 street lights and 3500 lit road traffic signs which costs £1.25million in energy and creates in the region of 8000 tonnes of CO2.

“There is very little in the way of empirical evidence to support the perception that part night street lighting has an adverse affect on crime or accidents.

“Our findings mirror the national picture, which is that part night lighting has not had any adverse impact on crime.”

All street lighting is being part nighted except where it is specifically deemed by South Gloucestershire Council to be an area: • Previously identified with crime, antisocial behaviour, or traffic accident issue.

• Have CCTV local authority/ police surveillance equipment reliant on street lighting.

• In close proximity of 24hr operational emergency services sites including hospitals.

• Have formal pedestrian crossings and traffic light controlled junctions (zebra, pelican, toucan, etc).

• Have traffic calming features (e.g. chicanes, speed humps, etc).

• With designated sheltered housing.

• Enclosed (e.g. fenced on both sides) footpaths that South Gloucestershire Council considers all night lighting significantly reduces risk to users.

A Filton resident has launched a petition calling on South Glos to restore funding for street lighting at night in Filton.

Ken Hoare, left, from The Sidings, said: “South Glos Council has gone ahead with a decision to turn off the street lamps from midnight to cut down on Carbon emmisions and save money.

“I think that after reading a lot of views and comments and seeing for myself how dark it is out there after midnight and listening to a young lady who finishes work after midnight and how she felt unsafe I thought the views of people in Filton should be heard.

After going out after midnight on my bike to see for myself I decided to start a petition and get signatures.

“How can money come before the safety of the people in Filton.”

Youngsters raise cash for charity

Students’ £600 charity effort

By Amy McQueen Abbeywood Community School students united to raise awareness and money for the Macmillan Cancer care charity.

The charity is largely made up of nurses who provide support and advice to cancer patients and their families to help them cope with the illness and the problems it can bring.

the rest of the school about the charity’s practical, medical, financial and emotional support they provide these families at a very difficult and demanding time.

The school is renowned for fundraising for charities and decided the best way for to raise money would be to hold a bake sale. It was a huge success as they raised a whopping £601.50 by selling cupcakes, brownies and doughnuts provided by both students and staff.

Capital treat for Nathan after triathlon A pupil from Charborough Road School was invited to London to meet young fundraisers from around the UK after his own charity effort in September.

Nathan Montano Hunter, 10, took part in one of five UK KidsTriathlons in September at Horfield Leisure Centre, organised by Lite@Nite, a new fundraising initiative from Thistle Hotels.

He was raising money for The Childrens Society. The children had to swim 90m, cycle 900m and run 500m. Nathan recieved a certificate and medal for taking part as well as a goody bag.

A week later the family received an email saying that he had been chosen as a lucky winner of a trip to London for his fundraising. Fifty families were chosen from those who took part in the triathlons across the UK and NAthan and his family joined representatives from all the charities at Marble Arch.

They walked across Hyde Park to reach the Serpentine.

Then the 50 children all wearing their yellow Lite@Nite tshirts ran across the finish line of the World Triathlon Championships.

A celebration followed at the Thistle Marble Arch hotel, including a bucking bronco, face painting, a photo booth and other games for the children.

Nathan is 10 and has just started year 6 at Charborough Rd School. He lives with mum Jane and his sister Greta, 5, in Filton. Nathan enjoys all sports and plays football for his school and St Valliers U11 team. He also belongs to 1st St Peter’s Scouts.

Jane said: “We heard about the Bristol kids triathlon and I thought it would be great for Nathan to take part. He really enjoyed it and was so pleased to get the chance to run at the World Triathlon finals in Hyde Park. I am really proud of his achievement.”

Bringing a landmark back to life One of the South West’s most iconic industrial buildings – Pegasus House – has reopened following a complete refurbishment to bring it back to its former glory.

His Royal Highness The Duke of Gloucester was special guest at a 1930s-themed day of

celebrations to commemorate this landmark achievement.

Many well-known Filton faces attended including MP Jack Lopresti, town council chairman Darryl Collins, members of the business community, former workers and Filton Community History members.

The opening ceremony included a dedication by Rev Canon Brian Arman from Filton Church.

He told guests of the close connection between the church and Airbus and how, over the years, staff would use the church for moments of quiet contemplation.

During the wartime air raids, which saw 230 people including 91 employees killed, the church played an important role in working with the families of the bereaved.

During this time, the site employed around 56,000 people.

Pegasus House, formerly known as Filton House, opened as the headquarters of the Bristol Aeroplane Company in 1936. It had been unused for the past 22 years and in that time suffered damage from fire, the elements and vandals.

The reopening follows extensive refurbishment work.

Along with the newly built Barnwell House, Pegasus House now forms part of the £70 million Airbus Aerospace Park (AAP).

Around 300 workers will be based at Pegasus House, while 2,500 engineers will work from Barnwell House, which is due to officially open in December.

Steve Fowles, Airbus Head of Buildings and Construction said: “The historical significance

of this building has been reflected in the quality of the refurbishment and the attention to detail.

“It represents a hugelyimportant heritage and at the same time is testament to the pride in British aviation and our confidence in the future of the business.”

Mr Fowles paid tribute to the skill, talent and commitment of all the craftsmen and women who have worked on the refurbishment and most of whom are based in Bristol and the South West.

Finished restoration ‘is all one could have hoped for’, says history group Members of Filton Community History were privileged to be present when Filton House, now Pegasus House, was re-opened last Thursday and we were shown round the refurbished building.

Spokesperson Jackie Sims said: “Airbus has spent huge amounts of money and expert care has been lavished on it. We on aircraft ranging from the Bristol Beaufighter to Concorde.

Architect David Olivares and builders Miller Construction spent 18 months totally renovating the building – including restoring the fourstorey stained glass window designed by muralist Jan Juta – and replacing all 430 windows.

The Grade II-listed building had suffered extensive damage while it stood empty and both Pegasus House and its heritage features were in danger of being lost for good.

Now thanks to the vision, investment, commitment and

“Airbus have made every effort to restore this building to pristine condition, using West Country craftsmen where possible, and taking care to use old photographs and records, and to listen to people who have worked there. “Pegasus is a figurehead building. Airbus is not just investing in its future, but in its heritage.”

Gateway returned to former glory A pair of three-metre-high ornamental gates that stood at the original entrance to the headquarters of The Bristol Aeroplane Company have been restored by local craftsmen.

The gates which now take pride of place outside the new Airbus Aerospace Park in Filton have been brought back to their former glory by Westonsuper-Mare-based architectural metalwork company CJ Fabrications.

And the gateway has been renamed The Sir Stanley White Gate in honour of the man who ran Bristol’s aeroplane company for more than 50 years and during both World Wars.

Founder of CJ Fabrications John Hawkes and his son Chris have spent some 300 man hours working on the gates.

“The main challenge was to preserve as much of the original material as possible,” said John.

“It would have been easier to replace the damaged parts, but ultimately we managed to save about 92 per cent of the original metal.”

The gates are made of a mixture of wrought iron, which gives them their strength, and lighter mild steel forming the decorative sections.

After removing the gates to the workshop in Weston and stripping them back to the metal, John and Chris had to repair and replace sections, before repainting the gates with eight coats of specialist paint.

“We painted them in situ, because that is what would have happened originally and we wanted to be as close to the heritage as possible,” said John.

Airbus head of engineering Neil Scott said: “The Airbus Aerospace Park is the result of a £70 million investment in Filton

by Airbus, securing the future of jobs at the site and its position as a centre of excellence in

aerospace design and innovation.

“These iconic gates stand testament to our commitment to building on our proud heritage while moving forward into the future.”

Sir George White, grandson of Sir Stanley White, unveiled a commemorative plaque at a renaming ceremony for the gateway which used to be known as Queen’s Gate.

Sir Stanley was the son of the first Sir George who established the original British and Colonial Aeroplane Company on the site in 1910 and who is regarded as the founder of British aviation.

The gates were originally made in the 1930s to stand at the entrance to the then Bristol Aeroplane Company’s headquarters.

It is not known for certain who made them, but the most likely candidate is Gardiners of Bristol who specialised in that kind of commission at the time.

CJ Fabrications also worked on much of the metalwork inside the newly refurbished Pegasus House.

Landmark’s role in aviation history 1910 Sir George White, known as the father of British aviation, establishes the British and Colonial Aeroplane Company at Filton.

1935

Sir Stanley White, son of Sir George, commissions the building of a new headquarters for the company, now the Bristol Aeroplane Company (BAC).

Work starts on Filton House (later Pegasus House).

1936

Staff move into the building, which includes a projection room, a conference room, a large drawing office, and a wages department in the basement.

1939

World War II begins. Bristoldesigned and built aircraft and engines play a hugely significant role in the war.

1940

On September 25, the Luftwaffe bombs Filton and 272 people lose their lives.

Post-war To keep the massive workforce employed, BAC diversifies into cars, marine craft, plastic products and prefabricated homes.

1945-1950 The King and Queen, all the European heads of State, Winston Churchill, Group Captain Douglas Bader, Wing Commander Guy Gibson (of Dam Busters fame), Cary Grant, Joan Fontaine and scores of other royals, politicians, heroes and celebrities visit Filton in tribute to the role played by BAC during the war.

1950s Bristol’s engineers continue to produce iconic aircraft including the Britannia, the first turbinepowered airliner to provide a non-stop service over the Atlantic.

Filton play area needs updating

Having just read Jackie Sims’s article on Filton Playgrounds it has got me thinking about the current facilities.

As a parent of young children I visit lots of playground but rarely to the one ‘just up the road’ as it is so poor. Just look at the new playground by Horfield sports centre, or Blaise Castle estate, or Canford Lane as three examples of many great play facilities within a short distance.

I am not the only one to think like this and is a real shame for the young people of our community. Isn’t it about time this was addressed and the playground updated?

It was fantastic to see my 65 mile bike ride challenge publicised in the FiltonVoice in August.

It was an extremely difficult cycle ride to take on, especially the final 20 miles in the blazing sunshine but with the help of my husband I made it through the finish line and managed to raise over £340 for two causes very close to my heart, Sparks children’s charity and the COB Foundation.

It was also brilliant to have the support of the FV in raising awareness of bladder conditions such as mine as they can leave people feeling very low and isolated.

Anything that fights against this can only be good!

16 new homes earmaked for Newleaze House site

Residents in Filton took time out to look at Merlin Housing Society’s plans for the development of 16 new homes on a site in Roycroft Road.

Around 40 people came along to the public consultation at Newleaze House to view the plans before the housing association submits its planning application.

The plans include 6 two bed houses, 4 three bed houses and 6 one and two bedroom flats which will be offered at a mix of social rent, market rent and shared ownership.

Merlin’s Development Manager Peter Crouch said: “The site provides us with a fantastic opportunity to develop much needed and affordable family homes in Filton. We’ve tried to reflect current and future demand for housing in the area”.

“We held this event as an opportunity to find out what local people think of the proposals.

Most of the comments we received were in favour of the development. We had a few minor objections, which we will address before we submit a formal planning application.

“We’re aiming to start on site early next year and have the homes ready for people to move into in early 2015.”

Previously used as older people’s housing, Newleaze House was deemed not fit for this purpose back in 2010, based on the size and accessibility of the bedsits it housed.

Merlin helped move the existing residents out of the building earlier this year, some of whom went to its brand new retirement development in Bluebell Gardens, Bradley Stoke.

The society initially looked the idea of using Newleaze House for student accommodation, but after consulting with the local community, it became clear

redevelopment was a more viable option.

People will also have a chance to have their say through South Gloucestershire Council’s formal planning process.

Garden centre in bid to help our schools Almondsbury Garden Centre is helping Filton schools get green-fingered.

The independent family run garden centre is re-launching its ‘Grow at School’ scheme, where local schools can apply for seeds, plants and equipment to encourage pupils to get out into the garden.

Schools within a 20 mile radius of the Garden Centre simply need to visit http:// www.parkgardencentres. co.uk/group/grow-at-schoolapplication.php and complete the application form and tell Almondsbury Garden Centre all about their gardening projects, as well as their ideas for the future.

Richard Truscott, Marketing Manager said: “We all know that times are difficult, but we want all gardening projects’ and after school clubs to continue.

“The idea behind the scheme is to create a gardening legacy where pupils begin to try things at home with their families.”

Grow at School is not restricted to schools, the scheme also supports community groups, charities and playgroups.

The Grow at School project application process is open until the October 25.

“We want young people to see the benefits of sustainability and we will work with them along the way,” added Mr Truscott.

Fashion ... with Amy McQueen

Styling the season As the infamous London Fashion Week reached its finale, Bristol’s had just got started at The Mall, Cribbs Causeway, presenting some great fashions from the likes of River Island to John Lewis.

This fashion extravaganza showed a range of styles inspired by top designers featured at London Fashion Week, such as punk chic by Saint Laurent, faux fur by Topshop Unique, jewelled embellishments by Dolce and Gabbana and various animal prints by Burberry Prorsum.

First up was River Island’s take on patriotic punk chic. This London scene showed lots of red tartan, black leather skirts and

jackets, matched with chunky biker boots – very punk rock.

Tartan made a later appearance in the very red, “Hogmanay”style finale from various retailers, including Next children, Marks & Spencer and John Lewis.

Embellishments and accessories appeared to be an outfit must-have this season as they were featured by many stores. This ranged from fur collars on both leather and tweed coats and headpieces from Marks & Spencer, to sparkly necklaces from Ernest Jones and glitzy party dresses from Wallace and Lipsy.

Volunteers needed to help save lives

Avon Fire & Rescue Service (AF&RS) is looking for Filton volunteers who can raise awareness of Home Fire Safety Visits (HFSVs).

Community Champion Volunteers will be asked to spend around eight hours a month talking to local groups about the benefits of a Home Fire Safety Visit and encouraging people to sign up.

Referrals will be passed to AF&RS and firefighters will visit people at home to discuss fire safety issues specific to their property and fit free smoke alarms where required.

Community Champion Volunteers will be providing a valuable service to local people by helping to increase fire safety awareness and prevent accidental fires.

A popular lollipop lady, who has been working for children from Filton Hill Primary for 10 years, says motorists still drive too fast.

Margaret Cook has helped youngsters and their parens from Filton Hill Primary since she moved from Little Stoke Primary and says that despite the speeding drivers and all the weather, she still loves her job.

Margaret, who has lived in Filton for 70 years, said: “I really like the job and seeing the children grow up.

“They all get to know me over the years and I must say, they are very good children at Filton Hill.

Cakes and coffee for cancer charity It was cakes and cuppas all round when a Filton mum organised a Macmillan Coffee Morning.

Natalie Westlake, of Hollyleigh Avenue, helped by daughters Isobel, 8; Evie, 5; and Rubey, 3, hosted 50 friends and neighbours and created a real party with a bouncy castle for the children.

Despite the showery weather, everyone gathered in the garden gazebo and enjoyed the delicious

cakes on offer ... and more than £150 was raised for Macmillan.

Natalie said she wanted to raise the money for Macmillan because family members had been affected by cancer and also to give something back after Rubey received excellent care after being diagnosed with a heart condition.

She said: “My daughters have donated their school toast money to Macmillan this week.

“Everyone put in a lot of

effort, including lots of mums from school and family, with cakes to rival Mary Berry!”

Other Macmillan coffee mornings were organised at Abbeywood School and also at St Andrew’s Methodist Church.

At St Andrew’s, the church raised £242.70.

A church spokeswoman said: “Many thanks to all who attended and also to Filtonvoice for putting it in the magazines.

I think this made a great difference to our attendance.”

On a roll for charity Help lead the way prepares

Legion branch for Poppy Appeal 2013 The Stoke Gifford Branch of The Royal British Legion, which covers Filton, is celebrating another successful year, in this its 85th anniversary year.

The branch, established in 1928, launched its Team ’85 logo, and has had special fundraisers such as its concert held in the Church Rooms in February and its Tri Services Military Event held in the Mile Straight Sports and Social Club on September 1.

As well as celebrating its 85th year the Stoke Gifford Branch, which covers Bradley Stoke, Little Stoke, Filton and Stoke Gifford won the RBL Gloucestershire County “Marling Cup” for most efficient small branch for the second year running.

The 2012/13 Poppy Appeal which ran from October 1, 2012, to September 30, 2013, has achieved another great total, but the final figures won’t be out until year end.

The money raised goes towards the Legion’s Welfare Fund and is used to help current and ex-service personnel and their families. Currently the Legion is spending £1.7 million a week in help and support, so it needs the continued generous

The national and local branch launches for the new 2013/14

Poppy Appeal will be in late October with Stoke Gifford’s taking place on October 25 at Parkway Station at 2pm.

With just over eight months to go before the new Brunel building at Southmead Hospital Bristol opens its doors, North Bristol NHS Trust is looking to recruit 150 Move Makers who will play a vital part in helping patients and visitors find their way around the new building.

The £430 million Brunel building opens on May 28, 2014, and will bring together all hospital services from the current Frenchay and Southmead sites. The Move Makers will meet, greet and direct patients and visitors arriving in the public areas of the Brunel building and the car parks.

Tricia Down, head of capital planning for the trust, said: “Their role will be more than functional - they will be making a difference to patients, visitors and staff who step into our fantastic new building for the first time – particularly given the vast size of the atrium.

“By the time we get to May 2014, Southmead Hospital Bristol will have transformed as a site quite considerably, although there will still be work continuing in some areas.

“Having a welcoming, friendly face when patients and visitors arrive in the car park or the Brunel building, with someone to guide you to your appointment or assist family and friends will be invaluable during a time of considerable change.”

Bristol Academy launches ‘Mini Vixens’ Mini Vixens is a new weekly coaching session for girls and boys aged 5-7 launched by the Bristol Academy of Sport Women’s Football Club.

Following the success of their summer camps, Bristol Academy based at SGS College are now expanding their community programme with the aim of increasing football participation and increasing awareness around the professional female game by giving local children access to positive sporting role models.

Delivered by first team players Angharad James and Lauren Haynes, the sessions will be a fun way for girls and boys to get into football with a focus on ball skills and small sided games. This initiative has been introduced to the Bristol Academy community programme following fantastic feedback from those who attended the summer holiday camps.

The club already has a successful school holiday programme for girls and boys, and a Centre of Excellence and Skills Centre for girls. The introduction of Mini Vixens offers opportunities for a younger audience for the first time in the club’s history.

Events Manager, Lowri Williams comments: “This is the first time that we have lowered the age to ages 5 and up. We felt it was key to try and engage youngsters that much earlier.

The weekly session is a great

opportunity to be coached by professional footballers and to pick up some key tips from some of the best.”

The sessions began last month and run from 5.30pm6.30pm at the WISE Campus the programme will cost £5 per session or £40 for a block of 10 sessions.

I was privileged to be asked

by Airbus UK to attend the reopening of New Filton House on September 26th.

Initially I thought that this was simply an invitation to be present as one of many representatives of the community and local commerce. How wrong that impression was to prove!

Following a further letter and then personal contact with the firms’ representatives it emerged that they were anxious that the beautifully refurbished buildings should not simply be reopened but also dedicated to the glory of God. Since I am Rector of the Parish they thought that it would be appropriate for me, on behalf of everyone in Filton, to perform this ceremony rather than invite one of the more senior members of the church hierarchy.

My motives were, I hope, quite unselfish, to my mind the derelict state of the old BAC buildings adjacent to the A38 have had a deeply demoralising effect on the wider community.

Not only do old Filtonians deplore the way in which one of Bristol’s flagship industries presented itself to the casual passer-by as unkempt and ‘dying’ but those who knew not the glory days of the past find themselves living in the shadow of a site which presents such a depressing aspect to the world.

Canon Brian Arman St Peter’s Church, Filton has restored confidence and pride into the community and engendered a new sense of optimism and self confidence which I was more than happy to play a small part in celebrating, not to mention the livelihood of the numerous people whose jobs depend of the future viability of the site!

However the good people of Airbus had a sub plot: ‘Could you say something about the longstanding relationship between the church and the Works?’ they said! After I had hesitatingly agreed I mentioned that September 26th was the day after the 73rd Anniversary of the daylight raid on Filton in 1940. Not being local they were

unaware of this but: ‘Good, you can tell us about that as well.’

Suddenly I found myself cast in the role of keynote speaker with Royalty present - me and my big mouth! All I can say is I hope I didn’t let anyone down.

The refurbished buildings were truly dedicated and I can assure you that those present will have become aware of the relationship between death and resurrection, old life and new life, despair and hope which characterised the day and is also, of course, the epicentre of the Christian message. I count myself very fortunate to have been asked to represent all of you on this very special day.

News £36 a year to collect green bins

Redidents will have to pay for collection, pay for bags or take waste to the tip Filton residents will be charged £36 a year if they want their green bin collected, South Glos councillors have decided.

The authority said the move was aimed at giving residents more opportunities to recycle household waste.

The charge can be avoided if garden waste is taken by residents to the local SORT IT! site at Stoke Gifford. They can also opt to use £2 ‘pay as you go’ garden waste sacks.

The charging will help the council raise an extra £1.2million from local households.

But Conservative councillors, who voted against the charging, said waste contractor Sita should be more efficient.

Labour and Lib Dem councillors on the authority’s Communities Committee voted through a new £36 a year green bin charge for garden waste collection plus £2 for pay-asyou-go sacks.

Conservative councillors opposed the move and argued that the district’s waste contractor Sita should become more efficient instead.

The consultation was fiercely criticised by Conservative councillors.

They said the majority of comments in a consultation were against green bin charging.In the report to councillors, council officers warn that the district’s current 51 per cent recycling rate

could fall by 1.5 per cent once green bin charging is introduced – below the national 50 per cent milestone.

I’m disappointed that Labour and Lib Dem councillors have ambushed the public and voted to impose green bin charging after a sham consultation.

“Residents have pointed out how this move will damage our local environment by increasing

fly-tipping, backyard burning and black bin usage, which will cut the district’s recycling rate.

“It really is misleading to suggest that slapping new taxes onto residents is the only way to save the council money. For instance, we should have been putting the pressure on Sita to work more efficiently, but instead the council has leapt into cutting frontline services first.”

A South Glos spokesman said: “Residents are set to have even more opportunities to recycle their household waste.

“Plans to include mixed plastics, drinks cartons and small electrical items within kerbside recycling services from next year were approved by members of the Communities Committee, as part of the council’s Waste Strategy for 2013-19.

“People living in flats are also set to benefit from a more comprehensive recycling service, with the introduction of new arrangements at premises not suited to a standard kerbside collection.

“South Gloucestershire already has one of the highest recycling rates of all unitary authorities and the strategy aims to build on this success by extending the service to include more types of waste.”

The existing free green bin service will stop on 28th March 2014 and then the chargeable service will start.

was Tamsin Abbott, who was exhibiting her wildlife-inspired stained glass panels at North Wootton, near Glastonbury.

Although familiar with them through photographs online, I was stunned by the delicacy of Tamsin’s work, which really comes into its own when you see it with natural light streaming through the glass.

A badger graffitoed onto sunset coloured art glass was a particularly poignant exhibit, given the destruction currently being visited on this most noble and playful of creatures and the proximity of the venue to the cull zone. Exhibited alongside Tamsin’s panels were some very sympathetic paintings and

Every year, Somerset Art Weeks Festival straddles the end of September into October, and for local lovers of art they are fast becoming as essential a part of autumn as Hallowe’en and Bonfire Night. Organised by Somerset Art Works, an artistled organisation with more than 400 members, the festival this year totals 109 exhibitions, events and artist-led projects at venues scattered over this most delightful and varied of counties.

need for immediate action to improve the use of existing runway capacity but it does not appear that anyone is looking at protecting one of Britain’s finest existing and strategically placed airfields, Filton Airfield.

“Filton’s runway is one of the widest, at 91 m (300 ft) and is a considerable length at 2,467 m (8,094 ft) long, having been extended first for the maiden flight of the Bristol Brabazon airliner in 1949 and again in the late 1960s for Concorde.

“It is difficult to set up a new airfield as there are lots of public objections, so it seems madness at a time when we need more runway capacity, the nation is allowing an existing long established airfield to be demolished.

“It is not in the national

interest to build houses on one of the best airfield solutions in the country, close to the M4 and M5 interchange and the rail interchange (North – South) (East – West London to Wales) around Bristol Parkway linked to the freight rail line next to Filton Airfield.

“Filton Airfield is a national strategic asset that once lost will never be recovered.”

The airfield was closed down by the owners, BAE Systems at the end of last year but campaigners insist that it would be financially viable to keep it open.

It is expected that thousands of homes will be built on the 300-acre site as well as an aviation enterprise zone which BAE Systems says would create thousands of jobs.

with Graham Simmonds of goto iT October: Home networking You might have heard of the phrase home networking but what is it and why is it useful.

Simply, it is linking all your PCs, tablets, printers and any other devices you might have together so they can talk to each other or share a connection.

The connection is usually made through a router which connects you to the internet. You can plug computers into it using a wire or use wireless for a laptop or tablet. They can then use the same internet connection.

But it can do more. If you have a printer, and this connects to the router, you can print to it from any device. You can even share files across your network so you can all see your home photos. Some TVs can connect so you can play your music through your TV speakers!

If your router is wireless but the signal is poor in parts of the house, you can use homeplugs to make a connection. These plug into the electricity sockets in the wall and use your electric cabling to connect one socket to another.

Amazingly you can do this for as little as £40.

Fundraising walk part of Ian’s journey to recovery In July 2010, Ian Taylor was enjoying a walk along the Monarch Way in Gloucestershire when he suffered a heart attack. His life was saved by the quick actions of those around him and the swift response of the specialist medical team on board The Great Western Air Ambulance. He tells Filtonvoice how three years on he has retraced his steps along the route in aid of the Filton-based charity.

On July 4, 2010 my wife Cathy, sister-in-law Helen and I were visiting our friend Anne at Tresham in Gloucestershire.

We decided to walk part of the Monarch Way to The Fleece Inn at Hillesley.

I was a reasonably fit 60-year-old with no signs of illness, and enjoyed regular rides on my bicycle at home in Worcestershire. All was well at The Fleece when I bought the drinks and we walked outside to the picnic tables.

That was the last I remember – I suffered a cardiac arrest.

I am able to tell the story because of the prompt care I received from a number of people to whom I am eternally grateful.

To Anne, our friend, who recognised the immediate signs and started CPR; to Ian, a retired

doctor relaxing in The Fleece, who took over the CPR, with the girls giving me air; to Pete, Kieron and John, critical care paramedic, specialist volunteer doctor and pilot from The Great Western Air Ambulance, which flew out from its base at Filton.

Pete and Kieron stabilised me before accompanying me to the Bristol Royal Infirmary by road – I was too ill to travel in the helicopter and had I suffered another arrest they would not have been able to work on me.

I spent two weeks in intensive care at the BRI and a further week on a ward gaining sufficient strength to go home. Meanwhile, Cathy and Helen stayed with their dad – he’d lived in Filton since the 1950s, and Cathy and Helen were born there.

Now, I am fit and well again.

Twice-weekly heart rehabilitation exercise classes are part of my lifestyle, as is walking a few miles on most days.

Earlier this year, while talking to Anne, an idea began to develop. In celebration of my recovery Anne suggested repeating the walk of July 4, 2010, invite our friends to either join us or make donations to The Great Western Air Ambulance.

On August 3, a group of us started from The Fleece at Hillesley, walked up the hill to Anne’s home for rolls, cakes, biscuits, fruit and drinks before walking back via the Monarch Way to The Fleece.

Anne, Cathy and I visited The Great Western Air Ambulance base at Filton on August 15, and we were delighted to hand over the donations of £1,725.

St Vallier are a Filton based football club for children aged 6 years and upwards. The club was established in 1974 and has successful teams in a range of age groups.

The current under 11 team have just moved across to a 9 v 9 format which has been designed to bridge the gap between the mini soccer of 7 a side, until the full size 11 a side game which they will now play at under 13 level.

As a result of the new 9 a side game, the team needed a completely new kit and we are very grateful to Dallas Clements, the branch manager of our local Ocean Estate Agents, for kindly sponsoring us and making a contribution to the new kit and jackets.

News Fun set to continue for Filton playscheme A summer playscheme in Filton was so successful that plans are in place for a bigger and better event next year.

More than 100 children aged between 5 – 11 years attended the Filton scheme, run by Southern Brooks Community Partnership, a vast increase on previous years.

The Four Towns Summer Play Scheme had a total of 620 children attend over the five locations.

Filton’s event was held at the leisure centre and supported

by Filton Town Council who provided the space for free this year.

Filton Town Council has agreed to continue working in partnership with Four Towns Play Association and parents have been asking if it could be extended to half term.

The weeks were themed on Recycling, Animals and Nature,

Healthy Living, and Sports and Countries. The children had great fun coming up with activities that fit into the relevant

week. A few recycling catwalk shows were held, lots of animals made from different materials, lots of singing and dancing from different countries as well as some children learning new languages from the staff. Sports were very popular, especially with the boys.

Ternaya Cummings of Southern Brooks said: ‘It’s great that it was so successful with so many children accessing the play scheme and I look forward to next year and what it will bring.

“We have been listening to parents who have requested half term play schemes and we will be investigating the possibility.”

M5 improvements win government funding

Funding to ease congestion at junctions 16 and 17 of the M5, popular for Filton motorists, has been given the go ahead.

The Department for Transport has awarded South Gloucestershire Council £1.68m from its Local Pinch Points Fund.

Along with developer funding which the council has secured from the Cribbs/Patchway area, the total investment package is worth £2.4m.

The works will see additional lanes on the circulatory carriageway of both roundabouts at junction 16 and 17. The A38 will be widened at the approach to junction 16 and a dedicated left-turn slip onto the M5 northbound route will be provided. The schemes also form part of a transport package for the Cribbs Patchway New Neighbourhood which includes employment land in the Filton Enterprise Area and 5,750 houses. Work is expected to be completed by spring 2015.

Insight into a glorious garden as group enjoys an inspiring visit The 50-strong party of gardening enthusiasts who toured the Royal Horticultural Society’s gardens at Wisley, in Surrey, on Thursday, September 6, will hold fond memories of the visit. It crowned a list of splendid outings to many of the country’s delightful gardens that are a joy to garden lovers everywhere.

“There was so much to see, so much to explore,” as fellow traveller Helen Johnston remarked. Coinciding as it did with the society’s Autumn Show, it was a delightful experience of gardening excellence that needed

much more time to enjoy than merely the short duration of our stay.

Splendid settings, a pleasure to behold and informative ... it was bestowed with a sea of white tents each offering instruction and displaying a varied selection of plants. It gave opportunities to pick up tips and to thoroughly understand the work of the expert gardener.

No sooner had you taken in

the glorious scenes – particularly the expanse of delightfully coloured dahlias – when another scene came to view just a turn away. To the serious gardener this visit was an inspiration; to the casual gardener it gave encouragement to grab that hoe and rake and brighten your domestic scene.

Wherever could you get an insight into the last days of a hydrangea than from an expert on the subject at Wisley?

In describing a Paniculata hydrangea, he remarked: “No flower dies more gracefully than a hydrangea!” Now you know!

Equally enlightening was the “apple expert”. From a Cox to a Bramley, he knew it all and how to grow them to get the best results. Seated cosily in his small tent amid an array of apples you were almost tempted to take a bite.

If you were an avid gardener like some in the party, or merely an enchanted onlooker like myself, the garden has it all.

I feel visit organisers Pat and Brian Smith can be justly proud of the growing interest in the Filton Garden Club. Not only has the club provided a greater interest in gardening but it has provided a glowing insight into the wonders of mother nature and given much pleasure besides.

Quality and fun in equal measure This month Rich Coulter discovers that the appeal of Disneyland Resort Paris is found in its high quality .... and that it is easily accessible, and affordable, from Bristol

They say that children change your life ... in my case, they also changed my attitude to Disneyland.

Our first trip to Disneyland Paris was well over 10 years ago now and until then I had bought into the idea that the giant theme park near Paris represented nothing but queues and adults, who should know better, wearing Mickey Mouse ears.

As it happens, both of those things, along with a few more of my preconceived notions, actually do happen but do you know what? I love it and I loved it from the first minute of the first trip.

Not because I am especially a big fan of all things Disney.

Not because of the ‘magic’ or the parades or the fireworks.

And not even because of the rides (although some are spectacular).

No, I have loved Disneyland from Day 1 because of the sheer quality of the place, the attention to detail and the feeling that, having spent a fair sum of money, those who have taken my cash have actually made an effort to give me something in return.

Having endured the sheer misery of one or two British theme parks, with their surly staff, inadequate parking and lack of attention to getting it right, Disneyland is a joy.

Interesting enough, as a family down the years, we have often found that the quality extends not just to the headline attractions but also those which are less well known.

We especially love the big ‘theatre shows’, not least because it is a relief to sit down for 30 minutes in a spacious, air-conditioned auditorium in the knowledge that you are going to be given some genuine entertainment.

This year, we discovered ‘Cinemagique’, a slightly cheesy ride through movie history courtesy of a cast member (actor) who begins the show as part of the audience and - as if by magic, there, I’ve said it - finds himself seemingly part of the great movies of all time. We loved it so much we went twice.

Disneyland Paris facts and figures

Yes, the queues can be brutal and it makes sense to consider whether a ride is really worth the wait. One of our original favourites, Peter Pan, has gargantuan queues seemingly all day yet the ride itself has become more and more uninspiring over the years.

On the other hand, Big Thunder Mountain never fails to disappoint, the queues are in a cool re-creation of a Wild West prospecting cabin and the ride itself is both specatcular and not over in a flash.

Of course a consideration is travel but from the Bristol area there are several options - flying to Paris, driving with ferry or

Eurotunnel, or the Eurostar which takes you directly to Disneyland. We went for the latter and found it surprisingly inexpensive, quick and comfortable.

We also opted for a Disneyland area hotel but not one of the actual Disney hotels.

This had its own shuttle to the parks all day and, while there was a certain element of mayhem, as a base it was clean, comfortable (with pool etc) and great value.

For three of us, for five days, we spent less than £800 for hotel, Eurostar and train connection from Bristol Parkway.

Of course, park tickets are extra but packages are available.

Europe’s number one tourist destination, Disneyland Paris has welcomed more than 265 million visits since opening in 1992 (16 million visits in 2012).

The resort boasts two spectacular theme parks (Disneyland Park and Walt Disney Studios Park) and seven themed Disney hotels with around 5,800 rooms (2,200 more are available in Selected and Associated Hotels).

Two full-service convention centres and a world-class 27-hole golf course are also present.
