He said: “In terms of a Filton perspective, I am seeking the Labour nomination to be the West of England Metro Mayor because the development of Filton Airfield means that opening up Filton North Train Station is absolutely essential and residents of the West of England will benefit from new train stations right across the sub region including Horfield and St Anne’s Park on the Bristol and Bath train routes.

“The other critical issue is affordable housing and even some Tories (Milton Keynes) recognise that affordable homes targets cannot be delivered if developers’ profits have to be maintained at a certain level.

“The Filton Airfield site should be an international

showcase for jobs, skills and new products in the aerospace industry and this will benefit the West of England and enable greater research with our universities.”

Cllr Scott left St George School at 16 and joined the Post Office and subsequently worked for South Gloucestershire Council, Bristol City Council and I currently work for an Education Trade Union as a Regional Official doing union casework and negotiations.

South Glos, Bristol and Bath and North East Somerset backed the plans for a West Mayor, which would devolve power and bring the region extra funding.

After a consultation, the three authorites are expected to ratify their decision this month with a likely election in May 2017.

North Somerset rejected being part of the Metro Mayor plans.

by Becky Day When Jenny and Mike Ponter built a climbing frame in their garden, they only envisioned it would provide endless fun for their two daughters.

However, one year later, they were shocked to discover that a complaint had been made by a local resident and that they needed to apply for planning permission.

The Ponters, from Ferndale Road in Filton, had purchased the climbing frame second-hand from eBay in May last year, as a surprise for their daughter’s birthday.

Jenny said: “We received a knock on the door mid-June from someone at the council informing us that they’d received a complaint about the climbing frame.

“We were in total shock as we’d already had it up over a year and hadn’t received any complaints ourselves.

“The last thing we’d want to do is upset any of our neighbours.”

It was highlighted in the complaint to South Glos that the 3.7 metre high frame was causing a loss of privacy to the resident’s bedroom windows, spoiling their outlook and having an overbearing impact.

It was also added that the structure overlooked the Shield Road Primary School playground.

As a result of the complaint, the Ponters agreed to enclose the tower with wooden slats, and also submit a planning application to the council and purchase land registry documents, which cost a total of £200.

Planning permission has now been awarded for the climbing frame and the Ponters say that they are relieved at the decision.

Jenny said: “It’s quite a lot of money to fork out for something that could have been resolved by just having a simple conversation.

“It’s all just been very disappointing and incredibly stressful – and a complete waste of taxpayers’ money.”

The family received at least five visits from South Glos Council – the most recent involving up to 15 council officers and planning committee members.

The planning application was recommended for approval by the officer assigned to the case.

“The structure towers above the 6ft fence. When children are playing on the structure, I have also witnessed adults on the structure.

“We sleep in the bedroom at the back of the house and have a loss of privacy.”

A council spokesperson said: “The planning application was approved at the Development Control (West) Committee meeting on Thursday November 3, subject to the following condition that the ‘enclosed den’ element of the climbing frame hereby approved shall remain enclosed on the south, west and north elevations in perpetuity.”

After the decision, Mrs Blake told the Filtonvoice: “I’ve lived in this road for 16 years. It’s very much a little community, so I was very surprised when the climbing frame went up, as it was clearly against planning regulations it’s something you’d find in Elm Park. I’ve brought up three boys - I’m not against them having a climbing frame, it’s just that the tower is far too high.

“When Jenny and Mike had their extension done, it lasted about a year - there was a lot of disruption, but I didn’t complain once about that. So I’m a bit upset that this is the thanks I get.”

However, concerns were rasied by Filton Town Council for the structure being “too high”.

Lesley Reuben, on behalf of Filton Town Council, said: “The climbing frame is clearly too high. It would be the Town Council’s suggestion that it is bought down to the fence height.”

The original complaint by neighbour Mrs Debra Blake stated: “The structure exceeds the 2.5 metre height restriction for a structure this wide, and it is not 2 metres from the boundary.

“The tower is overbearing, with a very dense visual appearance.

Community’s ‘gem’

by Rebecca Day A local community garden has been judged “outstanding” by the Royal Horticultural Society for the third consecutive year.

The Filton Community Garden, in Elm Park, was listed in the It’s Your Neighbourhood category, which recognises and celebrates people volunteering their time to rejuvenate their local area as part of Britain in Bloom.

ceremony in Taunton on October 6, and were presented with the ‘Outstanding’ certificate

by Emma Joy Kitchener, Lady Fellowes of West Stafford.

Dave Mikkelson, the chair of Filton Community Garden, said: “We didn’t know that we were getting the award until the day, although we had a slight inkling going by what the assessor said when they visited the garden.”

tips on how to further improve the garden. Since last year, volunteers have planted a rose garden to commemorate the late Filton Town councillor Douglas Daniels, and also a conservation area for bees.

The garden was deemed by the assessor, Denise James, “one of the best examples of a community garden in the South West” and said that it was a “real little gem tucked away”.

Dave said: “The assessors always give us hints on ways we

can improve the garden, but this year they said there was nothing much else we could do. But we want to keep finding ways to improve the garden – if we stop, we’ll just go backwards.”

Filton Community Garden first received an ‘Improving’ award from the RHS in 2013, shortly after opening the space to the public.

“The garden has blossomed from once being a patch of land where no one wanted to go, to now having lots of plants,

a special conservation area, meadows and Concorde wing flower beds,” Dave said. “It’s also specially laid out so that it’s easily accessible for disabled people. The comments made by the judge really show what a wonderful job we have all done in creating this very special space for residents of Filton and the wider community.”

The garden team is due to plant an orchard next year, after receiving permission from Filton Town Council, with some

ornaments and a tree sculpture being installed in the meantime.

There are around eight volunteers who maintain the garden on a regular basis.

RHS assessor Denise James said: “Everyone should be congratulated on achieving such high standards of horticultural, maintenance, presentation, addressing environmental and conservation issues, [and] restoring this once forgotten landscape into something which the whole community can enjoy.”

‘It was hard times... but we loved each other’ – celebration for diamond couple

by Rebecca Day Maurice and Diane Stephens can remember their wedding like it was yesterday.

“It was a beautiful sunny autumn day – a bit like it is today,” Diane recalled.

“We had all of the family there. We can even remember the name of the vicar who married us.”

This was on October 27, 1956 at St Gregory the Great Church in Filton Road.

Now 60 years on, the Stephens are proud to be celebrating their diamond

wedding anniversary and many happy decades together.

The Filton couple marked the milestone occasion with a family meal and a party at Bristol Golf Club in Almondsbury, which more than 80 close friends and family members attended.

The party raised £230 for the Filton Chest and Heart charity, which Maurice has been involved with over the years.

Maurice, 88, and Diane, 84, met in their early twenties after Maurice returned from serving in the forces as an

They were introduced by mutual friends and got to know one another through being avid supporters of Bristol City football club.

“Diane lived in Horfield, opposite my two friends Charlie and Albert,” Maurice said.

“We all used to catch the train together from Horfield station down to Ashton Gate to watch the football, and that’s how I got to know Diane properly.

“It was a few years after I met Diane that we decided that we wanted to be together.

“It was hard times back then, and money was tight, but we knew that we loved each other, so we decided to get married.”

Maurice moved to Third Avenue when he was 11 after his home in St Paul’s was bombed during the Second World War. It has remained his family home ever since.

Since tying the knot, the Stephens have brought four children into the world –

Philip, Kevin, and twins Ivor and Joanne – who have gifted Maurice and Diane with nine grandchildren – Tim, Becky, William, Sam, Naomi, George, Emily, Tom and Abby.

Over the years, the couple have enjoyed a number of wonderful family holidays, both abroad and in the UK. A particularly memorable break was when they visited America in 2004 with their friends, and had the opportunity to tour the Grand Canyon.

Closer to home, they’ve enjoyed numerous trips to seaside towns Weymouth and Paignton.

“We’ve lived a very active life and have had some very happy times,” Maurice said. “We’ve got a good quality of life now – I’m still driving and we enjoy gardening and keeping the house in good order.

“We’re very proud to have such beautiful children and grandchildren. They’re so helpful and always on hand when we need them.”

At the moment we’re seeing a small increase in burglaries of sheds and garages in our area. The reports are only in single figures – six in the past month – but I’d like to take this opportunity to remind everyone of the importance of securing outbuildings as well as your home.

Think about what you keep in your shed or garage. It can be anything from tools and bicycles, to sports kit and gardening equipment. How much did all that cost you? Now how much

did you spend on the hasp and padlock?

The security of our sheds and garages really needs to match the value of the items we keep inside.

We always recommend that you review your security starting outside your property.

Look at your home from the street, as if you were going to break in.

Can you get round the back easily or do you have trellistopped fencing, prickly plants and securely locked gates to deter thieves?

Do you have motion-sensing security lights? You can now get solar-powered lights which are easy to fit. You can also get low-cost alarms which are specially-designed to be installed in buildings which don’t have mains power.

Now look at your shed. Make sure the hinges are fitted with coach bolts or tamper-proof screws and that you have a goodquality hasp and staple closure and padlock.

Former Leeds United manager Dave takes coaching role at SGS SGS College in Filton has signed a major deal to secure former Leeds United manager, Dave Hockaday, as Head of the College’s Male Football Academy.

Hockaday, who also set up England’s first football academy in Cirencester in the 1990s, plans to put his extensive managerial experience to good use, overseeing coaching of all football-related activities at the College’s Wise Campus just over two years on from managing Leeds United.

Hockaday made 519 league appearances for Blackpool, Swindon Town, Hull City, Stoke City (loan) and Shrewsbury Town, before retiring at the age of 38 in 1995.

Speaking of his appointment, Dave said: “We’re here to give young men options in life. We will organise a full time professional training programme, where students succeed both on and off the field. I believe Bristol Academy of Sport can become the best football academy in the country.”

n FILTON TOWN COUNCIL A group of baseball enthusiasts want to set up a ‘batting cage’ facility on Filton’s Elm Park.

They say the project, which would see a large mesh-type enclosed tent constructed for batting practice, would be ideally suited to the Elm Park playing fields.

The Bristol Batting Cage Management team wants a three-year lease on Elm Park and town councillors were given a brief outline of the project at last month’s full meeting.

Further consideration will be given by the finance committee.

Designs shown to councillors depicted baseball players practising their technique inside three-sided nets - like cricket nets - with the balls fired towards them from a central point. The overall structure is fully enclosed for safety.

The balls are propelled from an automatic pitching machine.

A similar facility in London says the facility is ideal for young and old and can also be popular for parties and corporate days.

Baseball fans want Filton as their base for ‘batting cage’ London-Playgolf

A spokesman for Bristol Batting Cage Management said: “The land seems perfectly suited for our purpose and we would like to show (councillors) a detailed business plan. We propose a lease period of three

years with a committed interest for the foreseeable future.”

He said the structure would be made from scaffolding poles and does not require concrete.

The team say they have experience in management with

large corporations and two of the team completed Masters qualifications in business at Bristol University. All five are keen players with more than 10 years’ experience in baseball and softball.

n NEWS Minister launches £19.2m project

A government minister visited Airbus in Filton to announce the launch of a £19.2 million project to develop new methods for aircraft wing design using the latest computing technology.

Jesse Norman, Minister for Industry and Energy, unveiled the Advanced Product Concept Analysis Environment – or APROCONE – initiative, which is the result of joint investment from government and the industry.

It will be led by a team in Filton and aims to create new ways to design wings and engines quickly to meet future market and environmental demands.

Key partners include engine manufacturer Rolls-Royce.

“We are number one in Europe and world leaders

Airbus chief operating officer Tom Williams said; “Rapidly developing information systems technologies makes it possible for Airbus to develop a completely new way of designing wings.

“The funding for this project opens the door to increased collaboration and an opportunity to push the boundaries of innovation.”

Airbus hands over its 10,000th aircraft A ceremony has marked the delivery of Airbus’s 10,000th aircraft – an A350-900 for Singapore Airlines.

The milestone was celebrated in Toulouse with Airbus Group CEO Tom Enders joined by Goh Choon Phong, CEO of the airline.

The aircraft features a special “10,000th Airbus” logo and will be used to launch Singapore Airlines new non-stop service between Singapore and San Francisco.

Singapore Airlines placed its first order with Airbus in 1979, and Mr Enders said: “We are especially proud to celebrate this milestone with Singapore Airlines – one of our longest standing customers and a true

partner. Today, the SIA Group operates aircraft from across our complete product line and with the highest levels of technical excellence. There is no better endorsement for our products and we thank the entire SIA Group for its ongoing confidence, partnership and support.”

Airbus, which employs around 4,000 people at its site in Filton, currently has a total of 16 models on its production line spread across four aircraft “families” – the A320, A330, A350 XWB and A380.

In recent years the company has invested in the A320neo family, which entered commercial service this year, and the A330neo family, currently in development and with first delivery planned for the end of 2017.

Also under advanced stage of development is the second version of the all-new A350 XWB, the A350-1000, which is set for first flight before year end and first delivery in the second half of 2017.

Community asked for its views on plan for new school for autistic youngsters A consultation will be launched later this month on a new free school set to be built in Filton for children with autism.

SGS Pegasus School, which is due to open in South Gloucestershire in September 2017 and was given approval by the Secretary of State in February 2016, will focus on providing intensive support to 80 children of all ages and will aim to support them into mainstream education.

No site has been agreed for the school but it is expected to be built in the Filton area.

It will be part of the SGS Academy Trust, which is sponsored by South Gloucestershire and Stroud College, which has campuses at Filton and Stoke Gifford.

The trust says there is a shortage of specialist school

places for children with autism in South Gloucestershire and the surrounding areas.

The new free school will provide a facility close to where its pupils live and will be designed to offer a personalised approach to learning to meet their needs, the trust adds.

The consultation, which opened on October 6, will allow the local community to have their say.

Kevin Hamblin, CEO of SGS Academy Trust, said: “The SGS Pegasus School will be the only local special school in South Gloucestershire to provide a mainstream curriculum personalised and tailored to meet the specific needs of children with autism.

“Our school will provide a clear pathway from the age of four to 19.

“For the first time the curriculum will be designed to wrap around your child’s needs ensuring that we meet all of their learning, sensory or behavioural needs.

n NEWS Charity’s £2,400 donation to surgery Staff from Northville FAmily Practice received vital medical equipment valued at £2,400, thanks to the efforts of the Filton Chest and Heart charity.

The presentation was made at a coffee morning and fundraiser in the Doug Daniels Pavilion last month. Karen Biddel, Practice Manager, and lead nurse (respiratory disease) Jayne Oware received the equipment on behalf of the surgery.

The equipment wasas follows: A Care Fusion-hand held Spirometer;

a Blood Pressure Monitor and an ECG Machine; and a Paediatric Pulse Oximeter.

n MEET OUR COUNCILLORS New community grants scheme – Member Awarded Funding As part of the restructure of Council committees brought in by the ruling Conservatives earlier this year, the five Area Forums were abolished.

Filton was part of the Southern Brooks Area Forum, which covered the north fringe area.

One of the key functions of these Area Forums – to the public at least – was the awarding of small grants for community projects. This is where, for example, the funding for play park improvements in Elm Park was secured. There has been a hiatus since May but at the end of October the Council introduced a new grants scheme called Member Awarded Funding. This new

November 14th, when councillors will be making the final decision on a accepting the terms. If approved, which is highly likely, the new Metro Mayor will have strategic responsibility for a number of key responsibilities in the West of England such as transport, spatial planning, skills and adult education. The election for this new post would be in May 2017.

The deal gives the Combined Authority a budget of £1bn spread over 30 years to deliver economic growth for the region together with greater flexibility, such as through a business rate levy.

Next chapter for library consultation

South Gloucestershire Council is holding a second phase of consultation on proposed changes to the library service.

It comes after a huge groundswell of public opinion led to the council looking again at original plans which could have led to the closure of libraries such as Filton. Instead, the new plans include a scheme called ‘Open Plus’ which could see hours extended to 80 per week but for much of the time reduced or even no staff presence.

At the recent meeting of Filton Town Council, Cllr Joanne Ward, who led the battle to ensure Filton Library stayed open, urged the council to invite a representative from the library service to a future meeting to explain more.

The key points are: n The savings target would be reduced from £650,000 to

£500,000, enabling staffed opening hours to be reduced by a smaller amount than proposed in consultation phase 1 n The service would introduce an ‘open access’ technology to enable libraries to open without staff, extending opening times by nearly 100% on current hours.

This local event is now in its third year and we invite everyone in the community to join us for a fun packed event.

By popular demand the Shield Road Choir will again be providing some festive entertainment and Santa will be making an appearance in our

extremely popular grotto. We are really pleased to announce that once again people will be able to buy top quality Christmas trees provided by a local supplier at a discount price.

This feature, unique to Shield Road events, has proved very popular with locals who get

something of a bargain, topnotch tree while helping their community school.

Rookie Lifeguards

Rookie Lifeguard is aimed at children aged 8 to 12 years although most of the skills can be taught to people of all ages. Starting with Stage 1 of the Bronze Award and progressing through to Stage 3 of the Gold Award, Rookie Lifeguard begins at an ability level suitable for swimmers who have just learned to swim and progresses to the level of performing lifesaving tows.

Filton remembers Filton was preparing to remember the fallen in war at services and gatherings on and around the 11th of November.

Members of the Community Garden placed knitted poppies on the fence by the ring road along with a decorated cross.

Pupils earn set of results to be proud of Pupils have been praised for their hard work which has earned a Filton school a set of SATs results to celebrate.

Year 6 students at Shield Road Primary School beat results across both South Gloucestershire and nationwide in the Key Stage 2 assessments.

In reading, 89 per cent of Shield Road pupils met the expected standards, while the rate in South Gloucestershire as a whole was 68 per cent and nationally 66 per cent.

In writing, 85 per cent of the the school’s Year 6 group met the target, against 69 per cent in South Gloucestershire and 74 per cent nationally. In maths, Shield Road’s figure was 82 per cent, with 69 per cent across South Gloucestershire and 70 per cent nationally.

Delight as pupils’ achievement puts school among top Students’ progress has placed Abbeywood Community School seventh out of all South Gloucestershire schools, new figures released in October reveal.

The ranking is the result of the introduction of a new performance measure – Progress 8 – which switches focus from the number of GCSE passes at grades A*-C pupils achieve to how much progress they make between Year 7 and sitting the exams at the end of Year 11.

Progress 8 is measured across eight subjects, with certain core subjects such as English and maths doubleweighted, and which is designed to encourage students to study

‘Inclusive’ school reaps rewards for work A Filton school is celebrating after receiving an award for its work to promote inclusion for pupils from its special educational needs centre and across the whole school.

Charborough Road Primary School has received the Inclusion Quality Mark after a visit by an assessor, who said he felt it deserved the accolade to celebrate everyone’s efforts to help each other enjoy learning and school life.

The school is home to a 20-place Resource Base that caters for children who have speech, language and communication needs.

Children from all over the South Gloucestershire who have a statement of special educational need can be allocated a place in the school by the local authority.

Students focusing on Southmead’s past Students at Orchard School Bristol are embarking on an exciting project to uncover the history behind Southmead.

Meadows to Meaders, launched by Myers-Insole Local Learning, will involve students in a number of activities over the course of the academic year.

Eight Year 9 students have already undergone their training with innovative film and media production company Calling the Shots. Together, they will be creating a documentary that captures the history of the

neighbourhood and the houses people grew up in.

Over the coming weeks, they will be visiting Fonthill Primary School, the Youth Centre in Greystoke Avenue, as well as people’s houses.

As part of the Meadows to Meaders project, a number of students are also working alongside inspirational cookery company, Travelling Kitchen to cook meals together and see what we can learn from recipes from the 1930s about healthy eating today.

n NEWS IN BRIEF n The Mall at Cribbs Causeway is set to expand after South Glos councillors granted outline planning permission.

The scheme includes more than 35,000 square metres of retail floor space, leisure, and hotel and restaurant facilities alongside a new multi-storey car park, an events plaza and up to 150 residential apartments.

A Filton charity is inviting local businesses to get involved with its fundraising events as the festive season approaches.

Youth and community charity FACE, which works with more than 400 people aged from seven to 90 each year, is gearing up for its Christmas fair and family Christmas party over the coming weeks and is seeking sponsors to help make them a success.

Businesses can help in a range of ways, from providing raffle or tombola prizes and covering costs such as poster or banner printing, or by sponsoring parts of the events.

Sponsors are particularly being sought to cover the costs of a Christmas hamper (£50), Santa’s grotto (£60), which will be at the fair on November 19, or to make vital contributions to the Family Christmas Party for referred families on December 20 (£10 to £100).

An innovative project by Sirona’s Learning Disabilities Nursing team and Healthy Lifestyle Service has won a prestigious award at the nursing “Oscars”.

Sarah Button, Healthy Lifestyle Service manager; Dee Buchanan, community and primary care liaison nurse, and Emma Evans, primary care liaison nurse, scooped the top prize in the Learning Disabilities Nursing category of the Nursing Times Awards.

Sirona provides community health and social care services in South Gloucestershire and Bath and North East Somerset.

MP queries salaries in face of library cuts

The MP for Filton and Bradley Stoke has thanked the thousands of people who took part in a consultation over the future of South Gloucestershire’s libraries – but has called for an audit of senior council staff.

Jack Lopresti has questioned the amount of money paid to council chief executive Amanda Deeks and director of corporate resources Dave Perry and their staff when £500,000 has to be cut from the libraries budget.

Mr Lopresti says he was told, following a request, that both offices cost the taxpayer £467,519 in salary costs. He said: “South Gloucestershire councillors should do a full audit of all the senior council staff within the council offices before cutting any front line services.”

Fifty years ago, a young Alan Garner wrote some of the most memorable children’s fantasies of the 20th century. His novels The Moon of Gomrath and The Weirdstone of Brisingamen overflow with myth, magic and mystery, tracing the adventures of twins Susan and Colin as they become embroiled in a battle between elemental forces and ancient magic amidst the ancient woodlands of rural Cheshire.

His latest novel, Boneland, is a dark midwinter tale that revisits Colin and Susan from those earlier children’s books.

Yet this is not a book for children: in the intervening 50 years, Garner has seen much – becoming a father and a husband, and notoriously suffering from long-term mental ill-health – and written much (such as the acclaimed Young Adult novel Red Shift and the historical novels Strandloper and Thursbitch).

This novel owes a great debt not only to the Cheshire countryside but also to myth and the great weight of prehistory that presses upon the British landscape: intertwined with the present day story are spare passages where the narrative switches to the tale of a Neolithic shaman, the last of his tribe, as he grapples with the same forces that have shaped Susan and Colin’s lives.

For the reader willing to make the effort to contemplate its dark mysteries, willing to fill in the intentional blanks to piece together the clues Garner leaves hidden in his work, Boneland will repay much. A copy is available at Filton Library.

I

was always known as the social butterfly of the group, the petite size 8 who oozed confidence and liked to wear daring and bold outfits!

Yet in August 2015 I was on my family holiday in Spain sitting on the beach at 7 months pregnant with my second child feeling awful about my body and how I looked , and it was really affecting my confidence.

During my pregnancy my health took a turn for the worse. I found out that I had a slight heart murmur which caused dizziness and heart palpitations, I was anaemic with low iron deficiency, I had an extreme case of SPD and to top it off,I had gestational diabetes. I was very down and very fed up. Due to the diabetes I had to control my diet and medicate as well as test my blood six times a day. It was an enormous wakeup call for me as my mum, nan and grandad all suffered with diabetes and that’s what I was facing in my future.

Determined to not have the same problems as my family members I decided to take control of my health and I did as the doctors ordered and got by the next couple of months until my beautiful, healthy baby girl Monroe Valentine was born.

As I looked down at my beautiful daughter and watched my big 7 year old boy play I cried, partly with happiness

‘How my life was transformed’ as they were so happy and healthy but also with sadness because I couldn’t run around and play and I didn’t have the confidence to pose for pictures. I’d never felt like this before.

That’s when Slimming World was brought up in conversation. I had been to the group a couple of times before but lacked motivation and life took over however listening to my sister’s achievements and seeing her beam with confidence and happiness after a lifetime struggling with her weight, I was really impressed with her motivation and mind set.

She looked absolutely stunning and for the first time in years she was happy and healthy .

25th January 2016 was the day I took control and plumped up the courage to walk through those doors and sit down at the new members’ table. I laughed nervously as I walked in as I was terrified people would judge me for not being incredibly huge.

I was a normal, curvy size 12-14 however I had comments from friends and associates before that “I was silly for wanting to be smaller, you’re fine as

you are” and that “they wish they were my size, they wouldn’t complain”. I just kept repeating that it wasn’t what I’d been used to all my life and that I wasn’t happy.

As I looked around the room I felt myself eager to tell everyone I wasn’t always this size and that I was used to being small but that soon slipped my mind as my consultant Amy greeted me with a lovely warm welcome and a lovely big smile. She pulled out a chair and asked me to sit down.

I quickly felt at ease and was surprised about how easy it all sounded with the new plan and how excited I was to get going.

For me it wasn’t just about losing weight, it was about eating healthy, cooking from scratch to help with my breastfeeding journey and of course not having to live with diabetes later on in life like my fellow family members. I wanted to prove to myself, my family and my kids you can do anything you put your mind to.

I was so thankful a dear friend joined the group not long after I did. We have kept each other going and really found motivation in each other to stay to group each week and weigh whether it was an expected or unexpected result.

The whole experience so far has been the most liberating and fantastic life learning lessons of myself and also others.

I genuinely enjoy listening to everyone’s stories and new recipe finds and I have fallen in love with cooking for myself and my young family. It’s brought us all closer together.

Amy our consultant is always was so incredibly nice and supportive she wants you to succeed just as much as you do yourself .

Food optimising has given me a new healthy lease of life, a new body to be proud of and also an opportunity to help people feel like I do now . I can’t wait to help members on their own weightloss journeys.

n NEWS The problems with car parking in and around Southmead Hospital have been well documented. It had been hoped that with the completion of the new 600 space multi-storey car park which opened in August the problems would have been alleviated.

But a Bristol City Council report has found that the Hospital has just under 400 fewer car parking spaces than it is supposed to have two years after the Hospital was opened.

The Filton Voice can report that local people are still having problems accessing the Hospital by car.

Lockleaze resident Angela Thomas said: “The car Park was full when I visited late morning and the old car park was not open at all and I ended up having to park outside the grounds.”.

Richa Dwivedi of Cheswick added: “I went last week, multi storey car park was full, on road parking was all full. There was nowhere to park. I gave up after

“As someone who has been hospital visiting regularly for the past three or four weeks there is definitely not enough parking.”

Simon Wood, the North Bristol NHS Trust Director of Estates, Facilities and Capital Planning said: “As part of the redevelopment of Southmead Hospital 2,700 parking spaces are planned for the site. These spaces are being opened on a phased basis as works around the site are completed.”

The second phase of the Brunel building, including the patient and visitor multi-storey car park, had originally been due to be completed in the autumn

of 2015, however delays with the project meant that it did not open until August this year.

The new Brunel multi-storey car park - which has more than 400 spaces for patients and visitors - opened in August, connecting the car park and main hospital atrium. Further staff parking spaces opened last month in the former patient and visitor multi-storey car park in Beaufort Way. There are now almost 1,400 staff parking spaces onsite and approximately 850 patient and visitor spaces.

Works are continuing around the Southmead Hospital site with two more car parks due to open by autumn 2017. These will bring the number of spaces on site to 2,700.

n Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt has highlighted the “outstanding care” provided by Southmead Hospital’s maternity unit and outlined plans to roll out their successful PROMPT (PRactical Obstetric Multi-Professional Training) scheme to Trusts across England. The Health Secretary, who visited Southmead Hospital in July, unveiled measures designed to further improve maternity safety in the NHS. Pioneered by Professor Tim Draycott, Cathy Winter and a team at Southmead Maternity Unit, the PROMPT scheme is an evidencebased multi-professional training package for obstetric emergencies.

The scheme has been associated with some of the lowest child mortality rates in Europe.

Consultant Obstetrician Professor Tim Draycott, said: “We are proud that our maternity carers and researchers’ work has been recognised, and we will continue to support our research teams to promote safer birth together.”

Men in Sheds in Filton is extending its hours to meet demand. The DIY group, which aims to tackle loneliness and isolation among men aged over 50, operates from the Scout hut in Nuffield Grove, providing a space to socialise, build, share skills and drink tea. Men in Sheds Filton is part of a national movement, initiated by Age Concern Cheshire in 2009 and sustained by the UK Men’s Sheds Association. There are now over 200 “sheds” across the country, with many more being developed. The group runs every Wednesday, from 9.30am-12.30pm.
