Councillors clash over new £100k fund to 'fix' George junction Council chiefs have pledged £100,000 to try to fix South Gloucestershire’s “most frustrating road junction” amid a row over the cost. The traffic lights where the north (Conygre) and south (Northville) ends of Filton Avenue meet Station Road “divide Filton in two” and prompted a campaign by Tory ward councillor Chris Wood which raised a 500-name petition and support from MP Jack Lopresti. by thousands of residents, commuters and students from nearby UWE. Its layout means motorists travelling from the north end of Filton Avenue to the south have to drive to the already congested MoD Abbey Wood or Air Balloon roundabouts. Cllr Wood, whose campaign called for the junction to be “all
moving” to stop drivers from being forced to perform the U-turns at the roundabouts, told the meeting: “This is the most frustrating junction in the whole of South Gloucestershire.“ "It divides Filton in two. “The effect of opening this junction would be fantastic for residents, particularly those heading from Filton Avenue
north to Filton Avenue south. It will help motorists, residents, students and commuters. " I believe the previous investigation could have gone much further in finding a solution to ease the traffic woes that local residents have to endure. "I don't feel adequate consideration was given to
amending the traffic light sequencing at the MOD and Air Balloon Roundabouts, or the potential to use the southbound Filton Avenue Bus Lane outside of peak hours. I was elected to get this junction opened up, that is what I am working towards and all options must be properly considered." Cllr Monk said: “There was a report done four years ago for half that value. “The amount of money from the public purse is frustrating for that piece of road. Until you’ve implemented the original recommendations, why commission another report?” Conservative council leader Toby Savage said: “The fact is that a lot has changed in the last four years in terms of traffic and other transport interventions that have come on stream, not least MetroBus. So it is right that we take a fresh look." The project is subject to a separate Department for Transport decision about the MoD roundabout.

triathlon for cancer research For Filton resident Amy Atkinson, fitness has been a family affair this autumn as she and four generations of women in her family - including 87-year-old Doreen Hook - were due to complete a team triathlon in Exmouth on 27th October while raising over £1,000 for Pancreatic Cancer UK. The team of five, consisting of Amy and her mum Angela Thompson, grandmother Doreen, aunt Lesley Hook and daughter Olivia Atkinson took on the challenge when they learnt Angela was in remission after being diagnosed with the disease in April 2018. The event was split between the women with Amy set to do the 400m swim, Olivia the 20km bike ride and Doreen, Lesley and Angela the 5km run. Amy said, “After seeing mum experience this terrible disease and witnessing the good they

Have your say on council tax Filton residents, council tax and business rate payers are being invited to have their say on South Gloucestershire Council’s budget and council tax for 2020/21. Households in Filton pay the largest council tax in South Glos due to a higher precept (Filton Town Council element). In the current year, the average Band D home is paying £1,994 per year, including a precept of £225. The council provides a wide range of services and expects to spend in the region of £632m in the next financial year on areas including schools, refuse collection, street cleaning, planning, social care and road maintenance. This budget is based on an assumed central Government contribution of £76.9m towards general services and £227.5m for schools. The council had been expecting a 3.27 per cent fall in resources between 2019/20 and 2020/21, but the current proposals, which were updated following the Government Spending Round, actually provides a 6.8 per cent increase in available funding in 2020/21. A spokesperson said: "As we continue our drive to keep services sustainable for the future, the council is proposing to repeat last year’s council tax increase of 1.99 per cent to help cover increased costs. "It is anticipated that these changes will mean an increase of
approximately £59.22 per year in overall council tax bills (or equivalent to £4.94 per month) for a band D household. "Since 2011, we have made cumulative savings of nearly £87m in annual spending through a range of efficiency measures. "Wherever possible, this work has prioritised protecting frontline services from spending reductions, while delivering better value for money to residents. Based on this approach, we have developed a Transformation and Savings Programme to help us meet the budget challenges ahead. n NEWS An attempted robbery has taken place at the Co-0p in Cheswick Village. Residents took to the Cheswick Village Facebook group to report that at approximately 3:20pm on Thursday, October 3, a male attempted to steal £500 cash from the Post Office. There were then reports that an altercation followed in The Square, however the money was subsequently recovered by a member of staff. Commenting on the incident, a spokesman for Southern Co-op said: "We are working with Avon and Somerset Police following an attempted theft took place at our store on 3 October but it did not result in any loss to the business." A spokesman for Avon and Somerset Police said: “We were called to reports of cash being snatched from a premises in Cheswick Village in Long Down Avenue, Stoke Gifford at about 3.20pm on 3 October. "There was a struggle between staff and the suspect, who

Expert - Downs better than Filton for arena A property expert is backiing The Downs over Filton as the best location for a new arena in Bristol. The Downs’ growing popularity as a concert and events venue mean that plans to build Bristol’s new arena on the outskirts of the city at Filton Airfield may become redundant, according to Tim Davies, pictured, head of South West and Wales at global real estate advisor Colliers International. He said that the central location and ease of access make the city’s historic Downs a better bet for hosting major events. International construction company YTL has been appointed to develop the city’s new arena, together with new housing and a conference centre, on the site of the Brabazon hangars on the former Filton
airfield. The venue hosted two concerts by legendary Bristol band Massive Attack in February. The Filton site, above, was chosen as the preferred venue for Bristol’s new arena after Bristol City Council abandoned plans to build a city centre arena near Temple Meads station. “The Arena Island site was a far more accessible location than Filton for the vast majority of people in Bristol and beyond, and the same applies to The Downs,” said Mr Davies. “The Downs has shown that it can host top-class events. "The question must be asked as to why we are proceeding with a new arena at Filton when The Downs is far more accessible to everyone. The only real downside is the fact that all concerts need to be outdoors."

The Snowman ... with live music Ever popular film 'The Snowman' - accompanied by live music and a remembrance concert are set to delight audiences when Filton's very own top class brass band performs in November and December. Both concerts will be held at the St Michael's Centre in Stoke Gifford. Filton Concert Brass and the Bristol Military Wives Choir are performing a joint Festival of Remembrance on Saturday, November 9th. The concert will feature some of the band’s current concert repertoire as well as traditional Remembrance Day music. This will include the Last Post with a flag bearer from the Royal British Legion who the band is raising money for on the night. Filton Concert Brass Founded in 1976 by the late Jim Scott, Filton Concert Brass is Bristol’s only championship section brass band. Under former conductor Tom Davoren, the band won the British Open Senior Trophy in 2016 and the British Open Senior Cup in 2017 before a debut appearance at the British Open Grand Shield in 2018. In 2017 the band also qualified for the National Brass Band Championship Finals at the Royal Albert Hall. This was the first time this millennium that a band from Bristol had qualified for the National Finals. Filton Concert Brass are the current Welsh Open and Wychavon Festival of Brass entertainment champions. The band has recently appointed Lewis Wilkinson as their new conductor. Lewis has recently started studying conducting at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama.

n NEWS Lolly lady Margaret retires after 23 years Popular lollipop lady Margaret Cook has retired after 23 years of service to children at Filton Hill Primary School. Children, staff and Margaret's family gathered at a special presentation in the school recently to mark the occasion. Margaret originally began the job at Filton Hill after moving to Filton from Little Stoke. She said: "I will miss all the smiling, happy children but I am looking forward to my retirement. "I would like to say thankyou to everyone for the support they have given me while I was the school crossing lady. Kirsten Lemming, headteacher, said: "Margaret has been part of the school community for many years and has kept the children safe. We are grateful for her dedication to the children and we shall all miss her!"

Looking after our mental health World Mental Health Day is observed on 10 October every year, with the overall objective of raising awareness of mental health issues around the world. Charborough Road Primary took a day off from curriculum work to focus on their mental health and wellbeing. They all wore something Yellow and raised funds for Young Minds a charity that helps young people with mental health issues.
The day started with a parent tea and talk session in the library and throughout the day they had lots of visitors who worked with the children helping teach them how to look after their physical and mental health. There was Pilates, Mindfulness, Creative Writing and outdoor learning to name a few. The children particularly enjoyed the Cosmic Yoga where there was lots of stretching and making shapes with their body.
The staff really enjoyed Reflexology and Crafting in their wellbeing time. The children spent as much time as possible outside or moving their bodies, learning through play, practising their social skills or reading outdoors. The School are very grateful to The Bodyworks Pilates, Jacqui Bagatelas of Freedom Therapies and Nikki Blake of Tranquil Sole Reflexology for donating their time to work with our children and staff.

Katie is (hair) raising cash A pupil at Wallscourt Farm Academy has donated her locks to the Little Princess Trust. The trust provides real hair wigs free of charge to children and young people up to the age of 24, who have lost their own hair due to cancer treatment and other conditions. Katie Mason made the donation as part of the Think Pink day at FACE Filton, run in conjunction with Asda Filton for the Tickled Pink breast cancer campaign. Mum Dee said: "One of Katie's good school friends donated her hair to the Little Princess Trust last year and raised money for the Under Trees school project at the same time. Katie was inspired to follow in her footsteps this year. We have raised £400 including gift aid so far (with a little left to come). Katie's school partners with the Under Trees schools project run by the Brickworks charity which

ounds of Song Choir was formerly known as New Harmony Ladies Choir Bristol, and was founded in 1994 by the late Maurice Pearson. Sounds of Song is an amateur choir of around 30 members singing a wide variety of musical genres from popular show songs and folk to sacred and spirituals, and is led and accompanied by our conductor and pianist. The choir mainly sings in three-part harmony, alto, mezzo-soprano and soprano, but don’t let that put you off. We are a relaxed choir and provide practical help to learn the songs including tapes for each voice part, so you can always do a bit of brushing up at home. There is no audition required and you have 4 ‘taster’ sessions free of charge. The choir has performed at numerous venues throughout the country, including St George's Brandon Hill, The Royal Albert Hall London with Aled Jones, festivals and competitions in Devon and Cornwall as well as in the Isle of Wight, Prague and Krakow. We all know that exercise is beneficial for our physical health but did you know that there are many benefits for your mental wellbeing as well? New research, commissioned by Swim England has shown that almost half a million (492,000) British adults have reduced, or no longer take, medication for their mental health condition as a result of swimming. Mental health problems can affect anyone and can have a wide range of causes that can be complex and interrelated. In most cases, no one is precisely sure what the cause of a particular problem is, it’s likely to have been a combination of factors. Swimming has significantly reduced the symptoms of anxiety or depression for 1.4 million adults in Britain. Almost half a million British adults with mental health problems have stated that the number of visits to a medical professional regarding their mental health has reduced as a result of swimming. n MEET YOUR COUNCILLORS Chris Wood, Conservative, Filton I am delighted to confirm that £100,000 of funding has been allocated for investigative works which aim to open up to Filton Avenue and Station Road junction, see Page 2. This was a key ambition of mine during the local election, this funding is the first step in finding a solution. As you may have heard me say before, I consider this to be the most frustrating junction in the whole of South Gloucestershire. It cuts our community in two and forces residents who wishto travel from north to south to go all the way to the MOD roundabout, which increases journey times, congestion and pollution. More than 500 of you signed my petition back in May. This helped put the issue at the top of the council’s agenda, so thank you all for taking the time to either sign

Elsewhere I have reported numerous road and pavement flooding incidents to the council, as well as graffiti, litter and potholes. My councillor surgery takes place on the first and last Monday or the month in the Filton Library between 16.30 and 17.30. No appointment necessary.
I need to start my report with a correction, and a public apology to Chris Woods for any offence caused. In my last report I commented that the Conservative administration are looking to create additional advisory posts to the cabinet which would attract an SRA (Special Responsibility Allowance) and that Chris was one of those who was lined up for these posts. That was incorrect. Chris wasn’t one of those in line to receive additional allowances in the Cabinet Advisory Posts. This proposal didn’t pass based on the findings of the Independent Panel that scrutinises allowances. A reminder to local groups that each councillor in South Glos is allocated £ 3,000.00 to provide funding to local organisations. Any group interested should email me adam.monk@southglos.gov.uk. £ 50,000 has been allocated
in budgets to improve people’s perception of Value for Money from the council. I am not sure the £100k being spent to review traffic by the King George, see Page 2, is value for money as £50k was spent on a similar review four years ago and to date no measurable action from that report has been taken. Finally I hold regular councillor surgery in Filton Library on the 1st and 3rd Saturday of the month from 9.30am to 10.30am, no appointment is required.

t’s been three and a half months now since the kiosk in Elm Park reopened the hatch as The Pod in the Park. We’ve had some glorious days of sunshine and ice cream, and certainly our fair share of wet and gusty weather too! It’s been so heartwarming to have been so welcomed into the community and we’ve had so many kind words and messages of support. We’ve got exciting plans for the future, but we need help to make it happen! For those yet unaware, we are a social enterprise under the management of FACE Filton.
We provide employment for adults with learning and social disabilities, whilst serving excellent coffee and lovely freshly made food, which we source as far as possible from

n NEWS keep growing our impact. We’ve got lots of exciting things in the pipeline! We have started a new veg swap scheme, where we exchange a free coffee and cookie for a bag of surplus veg or fruit. We have started turning donated apples into a variety of delicious chutneys. We are going to be making a range of preserves, ferments and pickles to sell; our own 'Produce'! We are really excited about our plan to start a pop-up farm stand once a week, selling fresh fruit and veg, as well as our jarred goodies and cakes, and we are partnering with a team of Airbus graduates to bring this project to fruition. In an area with a very limited supply of fresh produce we are hoping this will be a welcome addition to the community. We’re about to launch a new menu, with some hearty and healthy soups and stews and banging wraps, as well as keeping our lovely rolls. We are also applying for funding for some local artists to
paint a bright, mural on The Pod and erect a shelter along its front wall. These are just some of the plans afoot! But, to make all this happen, we need some help. So we are running a Crowdfunding campaign! We will be officially launching it at our Autumn Fest event on 1st November. There’ll be lots of food and fun on the day, including a free Graffiti Workshop with our artist friends at Graft (11am-12pm) and our first farm stand. We will be in the sports hall if the heavens open! The Crowdfunder aims to raise at least £5,000 by Christmas, and there are lots of rewards on offer from The Pod, FACE Youth Centre and Filton swimming pool (which would make great Christmas presents!). Cheswick Village gets ready to 'trick or treat' by Keri Beckingham A 'spooctacular' community event is set to take place for the fourth year in a row. The Cheswick Village Trick or Treat trail is a free event that started in 2015. Each year the Cheswick Events Committee, a group of local residents, post on the Cheswick Facebook group asking for people to volunteer to have their houses listed on a map, which children and their families use to go trick or treating on Halloween between the hours of 6pm and 8pm. The local businesses on The Square also participate and lay on treats for the kids, and in total more than 50 properties and businesses took part in 2018. Speaking about the event, organiser Holly Stowell said: “It’s just got bigger and bigger due to the building up of Cheswick over the years! “We have fantastic feedback every year - it’s something
local and on the doorstep for Halloween evening. The whole community get involved, with the adults getting dressed up alongside the kids and some of the houses on the map go to some great effort decorating their houses and gardens. It works so well. After the first year some households on the edges of Cheswick said they’d been putting sweets out for a couple
of years but had never had any visitors. Now they’re on the map they get plenty. “We write on the Cheswick group to encourage residents and their children to stick to the houses on the map or those that are obviously decorated. This means also that those who don’t want visitors are generally left alone so it works for everyone.” Maps detailing participating
houses are available to collect from The Square at 6pm. The organisers have also told The Voice that there will be some spooky surprises on the night too!

n FILTON COMMUNITY GARDEN
Students to transform Community Garden entrance Filton Community Garden Committee have commissioned South Gloucestershire and Stroud College to create a mural on the walls bordering the Leisure Centre car park entrance to the Community Garden, writes Dave Mikkelson. The mural will be designed and created by Bristol School of Art students studying at SGS College on the Level 3 Diploma in Art and Design working on a brief themed around the history of Filton, gardens and outdoor spaces. The mural will tidy up the entrance to the garden which has already been improved recently with the building of the retaining wall on the left hand side. It will give visitors a fabulous visual experience before reaching the garden. Work has already started
with a base coat applied to the walls, and the College are due to present the student's designs to the Community Garden Group on Wednesday 6th November with work commencing on the mural on 11th November. This is a really exciting project and we are delighted that we are able to collaborate with SGS College and showcase the
creative talents of their Art and Design students. Claire Baillie, Team Leader, Bristol School of Art, said: "This is a fantastic opportunity for our students to respond to a live brief. "It's amazing to see how the gardens have developed over recent years and we are proud to be a part of it."
Filton Community Garden Armistice Day Service Filton Community Garden will be once again holding an Armistice Day Service in the Community Garden on Monday 11 November at 11 am. Local veteran Bill Knight will recite the oath as he has done for a number of years now. Please come along and remember those who have been injured or killed in conflicts across the world fighting for our freedom. There will be the opportunity to lay wreaths, poppies and other personal items on the war memorial. On Saturday November 2 at 10am the Community Garden Group will put up the knitted poppy display on the fence. If you want to help please come along you will be very welcome.

Christmas Cake By Angela Thompson
A wonderful traditional fruit cake. Make sure you allow enough time to feed the cake with brandy Ingredients: Method: • 100g red glace cherries 1. B egin the cake the night before you bake it by • 100g chopped dried apricots cutting the cherries into quarters, put into a • 275g currants sieve then rinse under water. Drain well and dry • 175g sultanas thoroughly on kitchen paper. • 175g raisins 2. M easure all the fruits into a large bowl, mix in • 50g finely chopped mixed peel brandy then cover and leave in a cool place • 3 tbsp brandy overnight. • 225g plain flour 3. Preheat the oven to 140 ⁰C. • ¼ tsp grated nutmeg 4. G rease an 8 inch deep, round cake tin & line the • 1/2 tsp ground mixed spice base and sides with a double layer of greaseproof • 225g softened butter paper. • 225g dark muscovado sugar 5. M easure the flour, spices, butter, sugar, eggs, almonds, treacle and rinds into a large bowl. Beat well then fold in • 4 large eggs the soaked fruits. Spoon the mixture into your prepared tin & spread evenly. Cover the top of the cake loosely • 50g chopped almonds with a double layer of greaseproof paper. • 1 tbsp black treacle 6. B ake in the preheated oven for 4 ¼ – 4 ¾ hours or until the cake feels firm to the touch and a skewer inserted • Grated rind of 1 lemon & 1 orange comes out clean. Leave the cake to cool in the tin. To finish: 7. When cool, pierce the cake at intervals with a fine skewer and feed with a little brandy. • Brandy to feed 8. Wrap the completely cold cake in a double layer of greaseproof paper and again in foil & store in a cool place. • 675g marzipan 9. Cover the cake with marzipan about a week before icing. Next month: • 675g ready to roll icing 10. Cover the cake with ready to roll icing and decorate in a festive manner. Chocolate orange cake

Schools funds boost - but not enough, says Labour More children across our area will be able to access a good education locally thanks to a major funding boost, according to Filton's MP. This funding follows the Prime Minister’s announcement in August that the budget for schools would be increased by a total of over £14 billion over three years, rising to £52.2 billion by 2022-23. Schools and local authorities will this month be finding out how the first part of that investment - £2.6 billion - will be allocated for the coming year. Locally, the Government claims, this will mean our 13,549 pupils will be receiving a total education budget of approx. £3.1 million extra. However Labour's parliamentary candidate for Filton and Bradley Stoke, Mhairi Threlfall, said the area had been historically underfunded.
The extra money, available from April, will ensure that per-pupil funding for all schools can rise at least in line with inflation and will deliver promised gains in full for areas which have been historically under-funded. Filton and Bradley Stoke MP Jack Lopresti said “Every child in South Gloucestershire deserves the best possible start in life – regardless of their background, individual circumstances or where they live. "The Government has confirmed local schools will receive 5.25% more funding per pupil next year as part of the recent multi-billion investment in primary and secondary education. “The 5.25% per pupil funding boost next year will mean that every school in our area will receive a budget increase, giving pupils, parents and teachers the
certainty to plan and to boost standards." “This new funding will also target those schools most in need of support, making sure that every parent can be confident their children are getting a world class education”. “I have met with ministers in a local school and in Westminster to press the need for improved education funding. Through my role as Deputy Chairman of the All Party Parliamentary Group for Education I have worked with many others to build a better education system which can be a great enabler of social mobility and aspiration.” Mr Lopresti added: “The Government’s commitment that every secondary school pupil will receive a minimum of £5,000 next year and every primary school pupil will receive a minimum of £4,000 by 2021-22 should reassure parents."
Ms Threlfall said: "South Gloucestershire schools have historically been underfunded, losing £26.7m between 2015 & 2019. So whilst any funding is good news, it is not good enough. It completely ignores the reality of the situation on the ground, including the damage of historic cuts, and underfunding, supported at the time by our MP. It also ignores the fact that teachers can struggle to get supply cover, or teaching assistant support, and are not paid enough. "And this, of course, does not account for the cuts to Sure Start centres, nursery schools, colleges and universities, or the funding shortfall for children with special educational needs and disabilities. We’ve only recently suffered a local closure to a nursery school in Filton and SGS college has been vocal on the need for fairer funding."

A petition aimed at restoring night time street lighting for Filton is “dead in the water” according to a councillor. In last month’s Filtonvoice, local resident Ken Hoare said he wanted South Glos Council to reconsider the move, which the

authority says is aimed at saving money and reducing the carbon footprint. He launched a Facebook petition which so far has gathered around 80 signatures. He would need around 2,500 to prompt a debate at South Glos Council.
However at this month’s full town council meeting, South Glos councillor Adam Monk described the petition as being “dead in the water” due to lack of signatures. But Cllr Rikki Teml, a Conygre Ward councillor, said:

The Filton Beat Team with Insp Evely
Filton’s Beat Team has been named as the best in the north east region of the Avon and Somerset policing area. They were among dozens of men and women who serve their communities, going above and beyond the call of duty, who celebrated at the annual Neighbourhood Policing Awards at Cadbury House Hotel, Congresbury. The awards are organised jointly by Avon and Somerset Police and Crime Commissioner Sue Mountstevens and the Constabulary and reward dedicated officers, staff and volunteers for their hard work in ensuring the communities of Avon and Somerset be safe and feel safe. The event was attended by more than 150 people including Lord Lieutenants, High Sheriffs and senior police officers. Filton Inspector Bob Evely said: “We’re extremely grateful to all the people in Filton who took the time to put us forward for this award. “We were delighted to be named the top team in the North East policing area, which includes the whole of South Gloucestershire and Bath and North East Somerset. “We’ll carry on being as visible and accessible as we can to the community and working to keep the area safe from crime and disorder.” Police and Crime Commissioner Sue Mountstevens said: “The awards are a tribute to the fantastic people we have

Shield Road Primary in Filton has been rated Good by Ofsted inspectors, with inspectors saying pupil progress and attainment has risen “sharply” in the past three years. The judgement is an improvement on the previous rating of ‘satisfactory’ with the inspection carried out under the rules of Ofsted’s new, tougher framework. In the four key areas achievement, quality of teaching, behaviour and safety, and leadership and management - the school was judged to be good. Among the highlights were: • Teaching promotes good learning; • High attainers receive challenging work; • Lessons are fun, according to pupils; • Pupils behave well in and out of lessons; • Bullying is unusual and the school deals with incidents “effectively”; • There is very good support for pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds; • The head, senior staff and governors work well together. The inspectors said that to move to a rating of outstanding, teaching assistants need to be better utilised and attendance, while better than before, has room for improvement. Detectives investigating an arson at a family home in Filton have recovered the petrol can used to carry the accelerant to the scene. The petrol can was found at the scene and has been seized for forensic examination. The can appears new and may have been bought in the days before the fire was started. Officers would like to speak to anyone who believes they may have information. The investigation into the fire, which happened in the early hours of Monday, October 21, continues and a Bristol man was arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life. He was later released on bail. Vulnerable will get property aid
I
t has taken a lot of mid-life musing to reach a stage when I trust myself to know when burn-out could be just around the corner. This ‘super power’ doesn’t always allow me to take the heat out of the impending smouldering, but it does at least allow me to share a forest fire warning with those I love, before I risk fanning the flames myself and singeing my own eyebrows. The first tell-tale sign is overthinking things. For example, although noone will really care whether my jumper shelf is alpha-sorted into co-ordinated pantone shades, I start to obsess that the engineer chap coming to check my gas boiler later in the week (not a euphemism) may enter my wardrobe by mistake and make a character judgement based on the lack of filing system for my sweaters. I then start wondering if I have time to blitz the shelf before that visit – perhaps decant a few jumpers and squeeze in a visit to the local charity shop – or will this mean having to cancel going to running club? I go to running club but on the hill sprints start obsessing about the state of the drawer containing my running kit; no wonder I was late to running club – my leggings were all tangled up with my t-shirts. This needs a rethink. I start to wonder whether any of my old t-shirts would make good dusters, after all, my flat could certainly do with dusting. In fact, if I don’t dust the flat, that gas man will surely make a character judgement about me during his visit… and so it goes on. I make a conscious effort to start under thinking; I realise I am not really sure how this works. I realise that a bit of writing will allow me to switch off from the world for a couple of hours. My blood pressure relaxes back down. I am not even thinking about how this comes about. In fact, the only tell-tale sign of my previous burnout is my permanently surprised expression, but then, you try looking calm when you have just singed your eyebrows off. www.thedragonfyjar.com
South Gloucestershire Council’s Cabinet has approved a new pilot scheme to support vulnerable residents in Filton to maintain their properties. The two year scheme will help the council tackle run down, privately owned housing across by focusing on prevention and early intervention rather than reactive enforcement. A spokesperson said: "There is a small number of houses which bring down the appearance of their whole street. We currently use formal enforcement powers to address these properties where they reach the threshold that permits intervention. "However some are owned by vulnerable residents who are struggling to maintain their properties. This scheme will see us focus on prevention and early intervention rather than enforcement action."

Filton prepares to remember the fallen in war The Filton Remembrance Sunday Service will be held at St Peter’s Church, Filton on Sunday, November 10th. There will be a service in the church starting at 10am with a service at the War memorial in the church cemetery at 11am. There will also be a short service at the war memorial at 11am on Remembrance Day itself (Monday). Filton Community Garden will be having a service on the 11th, and they will be putting the poppies on the fence as in previous years, pictured. The popular local Poppy Appeal Launch, run by the Stoke Gifford Branch of the Royal British Legion, (RBL), was due to be launched on Friday 25th October in Bristol Parkway Station with local uniformed groups and special guests. The branch is having another good year with the Poppy Appeal. In the last year, (2018/2019),
they have raised more than ÂŁ50,000. They are now seeking people from Filton to volunteer for the branch as a collector during the "Poppy Fortnight" until November 10th. The Branch is also very keen to recruit more people to knit its famous knitted poppies. The knitted poppies are very popular and raise much money for the Poppy Appeal, and the Branch can't keep up with demand!! There is no pressure to knit a certain number, any amount you can do will greatly help. A spokesman said: "The Branch would like to thank the public, branch members and volunteers, businesses and other organisations for their help and generosity throughout the
Appeal. And of course thank you to the great local media who do so much to help us raise so much money and help us raise the profile of our welfare work so we can reach more people who need our help. "The branch would love to repeat its success for the 2019/2020 Poppy Appeal year which began on 1st October 2019. "The money raised for the Poppy Appeal goes to the RBL's Welfare Fund, which is used to give help and support to current and ex service personnel and their families." The branch puts poppies and collecting tins around the area in Shops, Businesses and UWE. And it puts tables with poppies and collecting tins in larger stores, but it needs more volunteers to run these stalls during the Poppy Fortnight from 26th October until Remembrance Sunday in November.

The DIY group, which aims to tackle loneliness and isolation among men aged over 50, operates from the Scout hut in Nuffield Grove, providing a space to socialise, build, share skills and drink tea. Men in Sheds Filton is part of a national movement, initiated by Age Concern Cheshire in 2009 and sustained by the UK Men’s Sheds Association.
