An AGM could be held in the wake of the ongoing issues surrounding Filton Community Association. An EGM - held last month following a public meeting to discuss concerns about the centre management - was abandoned as treasurer David Gillard and president Rover Brock resigned on the spot amid acrimonious scenes. They left the meeting after angry exchanges with former administrator Oliver Newbury who had been suspended after reporting the association to the Charity Commission. Candidate says removal of Severn Bridge tolls will cause traffic chaos in Filton by Becky Day Labour’s new candidate for Filton and Bradley Stoke will win the seat in the next election. This is what Filton and Bradley Stoke party members heard when Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn spoke at St Michael’s Centre in Stoke Gifford last month.

Ms Threlfall, an entrepreneur from Edinburgh, says that she is aware of the difficulties that people in the constituency face, including traffic congestion, issues with the new Universal Credit system, cuts to education and the impact of Brexit on local jobs. In particular, Ms Threlfall criticised the removal of the Severn Bridge toll, saying that there have not been sufficient enough plans in place to mitigate against the increased congestion that local constituents are likely to face. In a press briefing, Mr Corbyn referred to Airbus and the importance of securing a ‘serious trade deal’ with Europe in order to save jobs. Mr Corbyn said: “We are working on our economic development model for the country, which is about investment in the future
of manufacturing, better infrastructure in this country and trade relationship with Europe that protects jobs – and crucially to make sure that Airbus stays here. “I fully understand Airbus’ position and it means there must be an open trade deal with Europe, otherwise why would they make engines here? And the same for Rolls Royce.” Speaking directly to the Filtonvoice, Mr Corbyn explained his plans for a ‘cradle-to-grave’ National Education System, which would ensure learning is free at the point of access. He also said that a Labour government would encourage parity of esteem between vocational and academic education, as he feels that vocational courses have been treated as ‘second-class options’ in the UK. Mr Corbyn was also joined by Dawn Butler, Shadow Minister for Women and Equality, who – alongside the Labour leader – launched proposals for an Emancipation Educational Trust which would see black history as part of the school curriculum.

It’s all kicking off... Liam is new world champion!
Filton has a young kickboxing world champion in its midst. Thirteen-year-old Liam Holden, from Abbeywood School, claimed the junior title in the WAKO (World Association of Kickboxing Organisation) World Championships in Venice in September. Liam competed in the Older Cadets -42kg category and endured five fights, each lasting two rounds of two minutes, before reaching the final. The competition ran from September 15-23. The young kickboxer was representing the WAKO Great British squad which he was selected for following the national championships earlier this year. Liam was joined in Venice by

dad Jon and instructor Sharon Gill – a six-time world champion, who also lives locally. He was able to afford the trip thanks to kind donations, given via a JustGiving page by members of his club, GB Fit Horfield. Before the world championships, Liam followed an intensive regime of training up to five times a week to ensure that he was fighting fit for the competition. Liam has been practising kickboxing – a full-contact sport, known for its rapid kicks and punches – since the age of six. Currently a brown sash, Liam is due to undertake his black belt grading in April next year. It is the second world championships that Liam

The Union flag raised in honour of Liam Holden’s win has competed in. He has also fought in a number of European championships, travelling to countries such as Hungry, Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Ireland and Spain. Last year, the Filtonvoice reported that Liam won silver in the WAKO European Championships in Macedonia. Mum Kelly, who watched Liam competing via a live stream of the event, told Filtonvoice: “I don’t think it has quite sunk in for Liam yet … he’s been incredibly modest about it all. “It’s impossible to say how proud I am of Liam – he has trained so hard for this, so it’s really well deserved.” Liam said: “It’s the best feeling ever to be world champion.” Liam has ambitions of one day competing in the Olympics, should the sport be considered for inclusion in the 2024 games in Los Angeles.

Filton set to lose pharmacist in branches merger Filton is set to lose a pharmacy after Day Lewis revealed plans to merge the Gloucester Road North branch into its Filton Avenue outlet. In a letter seen by Filtonvoice, NHS England has invited comments on the proposals by November 12. The move would leave Filton with just two pharmacies, with a Jhoots branch part of Conygre Medical Centre the other outlet. Day Lewis was approached for a comment but had failed to provide one as Filtonvoice went to print. Filtonvoice understands the application suggests no one will be inconvenienced unduly and the walking distance to the Filton Avenue branch is 'manageable'. On social media, residents have said a delivery service is available but others have raised concerns. One said: " At least three
elderly folk of my acquaintance have had real problems with these types of services. The drugs are dispensed from massive warehouses hundreds of miles away so mistakes cannot quickly be rectified and there is also the isolation factor. At least if you can, getting out to the chemist gives you some activity and human interaction." Another said: "When I was in the Filton Ave chemist a while back there was an elderly gentlemen on crutches who had to call into the chemist because the delivery driver wouldn’t deliver to him because he had a dog." And concerns were raised about the distance: "Really not happy with this proposal. Filton Avenue is a long way for residents with health conditions." Poor parking is a ‘danger to our school children’ by Becky Day ‘Dangerous’ and ‘careless’ parking on pavements is endangering the safety of young school children. This is the message from Cheswick Village residents to parents who have been spotted mounting their cars on pavements outside Wallscourt Farm Academy to drop their children off at school. The village has been plagued with parking issues in recent years – commuter parking being particularly problematic for residents. But this is the latest issue to
cause a stir in Cheswick, with exasperated locals taking to social media to express their frustration. Resident Sian Clarke told Filtonvoice: “I was walking along with my two young children when a car mounted the pavement right by us. “It terrified my four-year-old and he has been very wary of cars ever since. “Considering the small catchment of the school, I don't believe that all these people need to be driving to school. And even if they do feel the need to drive, there are places just a short
distance from the school. It’s not a good lesson to be teaching our children. As well as being a safety issue, everyone needs to take some responsibility for both the environment and the health of the next generation.” Resident Stuart Millett said: "When I left the school recently a parent was waiting to pull in to the school lay-by which blocked the road temporarily.

However Gemma Hunt, a parent at Wallscourt Farm Academy, wrote on Facebook that there needs to more lenience on parking as not everyone can walk. She said: “I have to take the car to school most days as I look after my poorly 91-year-old nan and I have to get from the school to Kingswood before 9.20am. “Does it really cause that much of a problem if someone is parked on double yellows for 10 mins? It isn’t like they are parked there all day, causing traffic issues. “I understand the fact about some people mounting the pavement to park, but I am sure they do it when no one is walking by, so they are not driving at anyone. “They need to be a bit more lenient on the parking. Not everyone can walk.” Local councillor for Frenchay and Stoke Park, and Wallscourt Farm Academy councillor with responsibility for health and

safety, Trevor Jones, said that there is regular communication from the school to encourage families to walk, and if they need to drive, to park responsibly. He told Filtonvoice: “While I fully understand that poorly executed parental parking outside Wallscourt Farm Academy is of concern to residents, especially those who have children at the school, to my mind the solution is largely in parents’ own hands.
“In my role as academy councillor, I have had regular feedback from the principal, who has confirmed that the school pedestrian gate is now opened ten minutes earlier. “The school newsletter regularly asks families to walk if possible and/or park safely and within the law. “In addition I have asked the council’s Road Safety Officer to advise whether it might be possible to prevent vehicular

access to the wide section of pavement.” Sue Kelham, principal at Wallscourt Farm Academy, said: “Wallscourt Farm Academy is fully aware of the parking issues around Cheswick Village and is working with parents and the local community to try and resolve this. “There is regular communication from the school asking parents to park legally as well as reminding parents that the best option is for local parents and children to walk to school. “Members of the senior leadership team are regularly outside the school gates at the beginning and end of the day encouraging people to park safely. "The school is also working with the local community police who have made several visits to the school in the last two weeks and over time as the school has grown. “Safeguarding and ensuring the safety of all children at Wallscourt Farm Academy is paramount.”

Raising a tasty £547 for cancer care A scrumptious cake sale at the Ratepayers pub in Filton raised a whopping £547.37 for Breast Cancer Care. The event was a 'Big Pink' party for Breast Cancer Awareness Month and was organised by pub manager Debra Davey-Holman and Charmaine Latoyah Short. Debra's sister-inlaw, Dawn, is currently battling the illness. Debra, pictured, said: "I would like to thank everybody who came to the cake sale and for everybody’s kind donations. I can’t thank enough everyone who donated and my partner in all this Charmaine for all her hard work. Dawn is very happy with the amount raised and sorry she wasn’t well enough to be there." The organisers were helped by many local firms and individuals who baked or donated cakes. • Downs Bakery donated 12 pink cupcakes

Steep drop in serious road accidents The number of people killed or seriously injured in road accidents in South Gloucestershire has decreased by more than a quarter, figures show. Department for Transport data shows eight people were killed and 34 people seriously injured on South Gloucestershire's roads in 2017. In three of those accidents children were taken to hospital. The overall figure for people killed and seriously injured has decreased from 58, the yearly average from 2010 to 2014, to 42 last year.

Pre-school forced to shut for a day after thieves target hall by Keri Beckingham A pre-school in Filton has been targeted by thieves, causing unnecessary disruption for staff, parents and their children. Filton Park Pre-School on Charborough Road was broken into at some point during the night of Monday October 8. Thieves smashed a fanlight in the pre-school’s main hall, and are thought to have leaned through in order to open a window and get into the building. Staff were first made aware of the break-in when they came in early on Tuesday, October 9, and found that the door to the office had been broken in half horizontally while still locked. They also discovered a large amount of broken glass in the main hall, and another door for a toy storage cupboard had also been smashed in. Although the thieves didn’t get away with any personal records, they did take a printer, a hamper that had been made ready for the recent Autumn Fayre and, bizarrely, a roll of sellotape. The pre-school was forced to shut for a day so that staff could clean up. Commenting on the disruption that the break-in has caused, Viv Kidd, Joint PreSchool Leader, said: “There’s not a lot here that thieves would be interested in, and they left a lot of mess and broken glass for us to clear up and got very little out of it. "It took us most of the day to clear up the glass, and we had to throw away a bit of carpet and cuddly toys as they were covered in glass too. The situation has been very inconvenient for parents who work and rely on us for childcare.” Sue Packham, Filton Park’s other Joint Pre-School Leader, added: “We’ve had some lovely offers from parents to replace the cuddly toys that we had to throw away, and a member of staff had a spare rug to replace the bit of carpet that we had to throw away too. Parents have been incredibly kind and understanding.” The pre-school have also said that the police think there might be a chance to catch whoever was behind the break-in, as they have
taken fingerprints from the scene and also found a sample of blood. A spokesman for Avon and Somerset Police said: “A number

At a ceremony last month in Yeovil, the garden was recognised again for all the hard work and creativity which has made it one of the highlights of the Filton Community. The garden has developed over several years to become a place of tranquillity, popular with those seeking a quiet moment or a place to enjoy lunch. Work at the garden, on the ring road side of Elm Park, is done entirely by volunteers, with support from Filton Town Council. In her assessment, judge Stephane Purser said the volunteers had turned a 'nogo piece of waste land into a beautiful places for all to enjoy." She paid tribute to many of the features, including the tree with owl carving and fairy garden, the pond in memory of garden stalwart Bill Moore,

Council launches public consultation on its 2019/20 budget South Gloucestershire residents, including council tax and business rate payers, are being invited to have their say on the council’s budget and council tax for 2019/20. The council provides a wide range of services and expects to spend in the region of £618.5m in the next financial year, on areas including schools, refuse collection, street cleaning, planning, social care and road maintenance. This budget is based on an assumed central Government contribution of £87.5m towards general services and £212.1m specifically for schools. While this is an outline budget at this stage, based on a series of assumptions about central government funding and other factors, each year the public are encouraged to comment on the council’s priorities and council tax levels for the coming year. A spokesman said: "As the drive continues to keep services sustainable for the future, the council is proposing a lower council tax increase, of 2.99% next year, to help cover increased costs in providing services. Having levied the adult social care precept at 3% for the past two years, government policy does not currently allow us to increase it any further next year. "It is anticipated that these changes will mean an increase of approximately £43.09 per year in overall council tax bills (or equivalent to £3.59 per month) for a band D household. Even after this increase, medium term
financial planning indicates the council will need to make more savings over the next four years to keep pace with increasing cost pressures and further reducing

Primary pupils learning in the great outdoors Over the school summer holidays Shield Road Primary School were delighted to see an Outdoor Classroom space built after lots of fund raising efforts by the Friends of Shield Road (PTA). The classroom, although located in the orchard by the Key Stage One playground, is being used by all ages. There has been lots of positive feedback from both staff and pupils. Mr Mepham, the Head Teacher said: “We are delighted with our wonderful outdoor classroom. The children have been using it on a regular basis and absolutely love learning in the fresh air.” The Friends of Shield Road School want to say a massive thank you to everyone in the school and our community who supported the Friends over the last year by joining us at the Christmas Fayre and Car
boot sale. This, along with our regular fundraising activities in the school, makes a big positive impact on the school community. Some of the funding came from Tesco #bagsofhelp & Aviva #avivacommunityfund so a big thank you is due to them, as well as everyone who voted for the school. Shield Road Primary has applied to the Aviva Community Fund again this year and will be making improvements to the playgrounds if successful.

Filton business owners urged to join new group Business owners and traders in Filton are being urged to unite. That's the message from a local councillor who is bidding to revive the former Chamber of Trade - possibly under a new name - with the vision of helping local businesses thrive. A launch event will be held on Thursday, November 8 in the Doug Daniels Pavilion at Elm Park, starting at 7.30pm, and all business owners are urged to attend. Cllr Mubashar Chaudhry said he wanted all businesses big and small - to benefit from having a collective voice. This could be anything from small sole traders such as builders, plumbers, electricians,/ IT consultants and people running business from home, as well as the larger firms. He said: "A group like this
can help businesses by having strength in numbers, so we can raise issues with such as South Glos Council and expect a better response. We want this to be a group which benefits businesses, not just a talking shop. So we will lay on guest speakers who can really add value to your business as well as networking and training opportunities." He said: "We want to offer guest speakers, training, events such as street fayres, networking, highlighting vacancies and in general giving Filton businesses a louder voice." At an informal meeting, attended by some members of the old Chamber of Trade and South Glos Council, some of the issues facing Filton businesses were discussed. These include the lack of a single High Street as a focal point.

n NEWS Life-saving work North Bristol NHS Trust, which includes Southmead Hospital, has been announced as one of only seven genomic laboratory hubs in the country as part of a national network of centres that could provide potentially lifechanging diagnosis to seriously ill patients. Matt Hancock, Health and Social Care Secretary, announced that from early 2019 whole genome sequencing will be made available to seriously ill children with a suspected genetic disorder and people with types of cancer. North Bristol NHS Trust will run the service for the South West alongside Royal Devon and Exeter NHS Foundation Trust. Dr Eileen Roberts, Head of the Bristol Genetics Laboratory based at North Bristol NHS Trust, said: “Treatments will be more tailored to each individual’s own disease profile and in some cases patients will be able to avoid aggressive treatments which may be of no benefit."

Nearly a third of adults receiving social care in South Gloucestershire are paying private providers to top up their support, new figures show. The Local Government Association said the greater uptake of private services is caused by stretched council resources. The adult social care survey, of 512 care receivers in South Gloucestershire, shows that 25% of people were topping up social care out of their own pocket in 2017-18. Including those whose families contributed, it was 30%. Adult social care is provided to people with physical or learning disabilities, or physical or mental illnesses. Provision is means tested, and includes support such as personal care, or with domestic routines. Of those surveyed about their social care in South Gloucestershire, 91% of people said that they were satisfied with it.

Moving reminder of Battle of the Somme The Trench, an evocative part of the Shrouds of the Somme artwork installation by artist Rob Heard, was a big attraction for visitors to Aerospace Bristol last month. The exhibition, commemorating 72,396 men killed in the Battle of the Somme, whose bodies were never recovered, was officially opened by Dame Janet Trotter, Lord-Lieutenant of Gloucestershire and Cllr Rachael Hunt, Chair of South Gloucestershire Council, together with Commodore Jake Moores, Chair of Shrouds of the Somme. Members of the public joined specially invited guests at the moving and respectful ceremony featuring veteran standard bearers, a bugler and cadets from Bristol Adventure Sea Cadets, Royal Marine Cadets and RAF Air Cadets from 2152
and 2152 DF squadron. The 2m high, 45m long, wooden trench, stacked with tens of thousands of shrouded figurines representing men killed in the Battle of the Somme, is on show at the Aerospace Bristol museum thanks to funding from South Gloucestershire Council with support from SSAFA

n AEROSPACE MUSEUM 160,000 people visit Concorde in first year the vast numbers of those killed really mean. Cllr Rachael Hunt, Chair of South Gloucestershire Council said: “We have been proud to welcome this exhibition to South Gloucestershire which gives local people a most moving and powerful experience and a chance to remember all those who have given their lives in the name of their country. “Many local people will have seen the Shrouds laid out on College Green in Bristol but seeing them like this, thousands upon thousands stacked on top of each other in The Trench, really brings home the scale of the devastation experienced during the Battle of the Somme.” The free exhibition ran until October 14 after which the Shrouds of the Somme travelled to London to be laid out at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park for the Armistice Centenary.
Situated on the historic Filton Airfield, the Aerospace Bristol museum opened its doors twelve months ago and has quickly established itself as one of Bristol’s must-see family attractions. A remarkable 160,000 people have already visited Aerospace Bristol; embarking upon a journey through more than a century of Bristol’s aerospace achievements and stepping aboard the last Concorde ever to fly. Lloyd Burnell, Executive Director of Aerospace Bristol, said: “We always knew there was huge enthusiasm and passion for Concorde, and great pride in our aerospace heritage, but the incredible number of visitors – 160,000 in just twelve months - and the fantastic feedback we’ve received, has exceeded all expectations. We’re now looking forward to the next phase of the
museum’s development and to celebrating the 50th anniversary of the first Concorde flight in 2019.” Aerospace Bristol is planning a year-long ‘Concorde50’ celebration, with a programme of special events, opportunities to share Concorde memories, and the chance to support the charity in its mission to inspire the next generation of engineers.
More than 6,000 schoolchildren have taken part in the museum’s national curriculum-linked science, technology and engineering workshops, with younger visitors also enjoying fun children’s trails around the exhibition, hands-on interactive exhibits, and even an aviation-themed outdoor play area. Getting from A to B in our city - or not? THE city council is keen to hear the views of people in Bishopston, Cotham, Redland and St Andrews about their new Transport Strategy. A vision for improving transport in Bristol over the next twenty years has been launched in a bid to tackle congestion and transform how people move around the city. The draft Bristol Transport Strategy sets out how Bristol City Council plans to tackle challenges affecting journeys such as traffic congestion, growth in housing and jobs, inequality and health problems caused by inactivity and air pollution. Members of the public are invited to give their views on the strategy and choose their transport priorities for Bristol through a simulator tool, which outlines the pros and cons for a range of projects. Some of the approaches earmarked in the strategy which could help citywide movement include a mass transit scheme, such as underground or tram, better bus and rail services, safer walking and cycling routes and investment in technology, such as smart phone apps to help people plan journeys. Skittles match raises money for Headway The annual Charity Skittles Match, between Henbury Gents and Laings, was held at the Civil Service Club on Filton Avenue. One of the young players, Duncan Edwards, passed away after a tragic accident in which he suffered severe brain injuries from which he did not recover. In his memory, for the past few years, both teams play for the Duncan Edwards Memorial Trophy and all proceeds go to Headway, who support brain injured patients and their families. It is a fun night, where donated prizes are raffled and they play skittles, with proceeds all going to charity. This year ÂŁ400 was raised for Headway, who also supplied balloons, shirts for the captains and a Headway poster to display on the
Wheelchair user enjoys petanque evening. The main raffle prize, a bicycle, was donated by Jan Edwards, Duncan’s mother. Ray Edwards, his father, is Laings Captain, seen shaking hands with Henbury Gents Captain after the match. They would like to thank the Civil Service Club and all those who contributed to make the night a great success!
This autumn saw the continuation of a three-year association between Filton Petanque Club and Headway. Members of Headway have joined the Elm Park-based club several times over the last few months in groups of about a dozen to spend time learning and playing the game.
Many have enjoyed the experience and returned for more. On its last session of 2018 Filton Petanque Club were pleased to welcome their first member who needs a wheelchair, but who found that this was not a barrier to being able access the pistes or take part in the games.

Fire service puts Flyers through paces Avon Fire and Rescue Service (AF&RS) has teamed up with the Bristol Flyers women’s basketball team based at SGS College in Filton for fitness tests as part of a recruitment campaign. Fitness instructors from the Service joined the squad for an evening training session, showing just what it takes to pass the firefighter fitness test.
The session, consisting of 16 women ranging from 16 to 36 years old, included interval sets of running at different paces, to improve aerobic capacity and get ready for the Cooper test (1.5mile run), and a barbell shoulder press. The move came ahead of a new recruitment campaign this autumns

40% fail to pay their ex for child maintenance by Miguel Rodriguez Data Reporter Nearly 40% of parents who have their child maintenance payments controlled by the Government in South Gloucestershire are failing to pay their ex-partners. Newly released figures from the Department for Work and Pensions show that around 410 parents were due to pay support through the Child Maintenance Service in South Gloucestershire between April and June 2018, but 37% of them had their payments in arrears. The proportion of parents with payments in arrears in South Gloucestershire is down from 38.5% in the first quarter of 2018. The charity for single-parent
families Gingerbread said the rate of noncompliance in Britain, about 38% of the total, is “worryingly high”. This payment service, called Collect & Pay, is part of the Child Maintenance Service (CMS), which was set up in 2012 to replace the Child Support Agency. The CMS can take money from a parent’s earnings or their bank account if they try to avoid payments, or take a parent to court. At the start of this year, the best performance was in the Orkney Islands, in Scotland, where only 22.7% of parents failed to pay. The poorest record was in Tandridge, the South East, where 51.7% of parents did not meet their obligations to their children.

'Mo’ support for Mario’s Movember campaign A barber from Filton has had lots of support for his annual Movember fundraising campaign, but is still looking for local residents and businesses to get behind him. Mario Parrinello, who runs The Filton Barbers on Gloucester Road North, has been raising money for the Movember campaign for the eighth year in a row. Movember is a moustache growing charity event held during November each year that raises funds and awareness for prostate and testicular cancer. Speaking of the support he’s had to date. Mario told Filton Voice: “We’ve got 32 prizes for the raffle so far with a couple of big ones in the pipe line, and we’ve also sold over 150 tickets,

Roll up! Students’ work in circus exhibition
The modern circus has been entertaining people in Bristol for 250 years and to mark the anniversary, Orchard School students have contributed to a major new exhibition at the city Museum and Art Gallery. The school has been working alongside Circomedia, Bristol Museum and Art Gallery and the University of Bristol Theatre Collection, to investigate and explore some of the characters, stories and events which have shaped circus heritage over the years. The school’s ‘circus detectives’ started their research by visiting the Theatre Collection. They interviewed local people about their circus memories, and later visited the Bristol Museum to help plan how their work is going to be displayed at the museum. Year 9 art students were also
involved working on a project based on how clowns register their unique face makeup by painting it on eggs that are stored in a clown register. The heads they are creating were being displayed as part of the exhibition at the Bristol Museum. A spokesperson for Local Learning, which has been working alongside our
students, said: “Running an intergenerational project has been a positive way of breaking down barriers between younger and older people. “The students at Orchard School in this project have learnt a huge amount from the experiences and encouragement of the local residents, whilst the students’ enthusiasm and wonder

Pupils learn the skills that could save a life For the second year running, Orchard School Year 7 pupils have learnt how to perform CPR as part of the “Restart a Heart Day” campaign. Restart a Heart Day is a Europe-wide initiative developed by the European Resuscitation Council. It was launched in 2013 to teach members of the public how to help restart the heart of someone who has suffered a cardiac arrest. The South West Ambulance Service spent the whole day at Orchard School and over 200 Year 7 students have learnt lifesaving CPR. Pupils watched an interactive DVD and learnt all the skills required to undertake CPR. The Y7 Orchard pupils learnt about how to keep a healthy heart – through sport, exercise and diet. They also learnt what
a cardiac arrest is, and how to recognise the signs. “It was such good fun – I learnt loads and I now feel really confident about what to do if I see somebody in need of help,” said one Year 7 Orchard student. “The Call-Push-Rescue phrase will really stick with me.” Every year, around 350,000 Europeans suffer an out-ofhospital cardiac arrest (OHCA). OHCA can occur anywhere, for example in the street, at work, or while exercising or doing other strenuous activity. Sadly, the vast majority happen at home, where family members are the only witnesses and the only ones with the chance to save their loved ones. An update from Jack Lopresti, MP for Filton and Bradley Stoke
I'll be seeking answers over Cribbs decision There have been many great events around the constituency in the last month. I had the pleasure of opening the new Wildlife Garden at the MS Therapy Centre in Bradley Stoke. The garden is a brilliant collaborative project that created a wildlife therapy garden with many sensory features that will benefit centre users receiving treatments, as well as the wider local community. It was led by the Avon Wildlife Trust, with the generous support of Rolls-Royce apprentices, Wessex Water, and many others within the community. I also attended the opening of ‘LiftWorks’ at Rolls-Royce in Filton alongside the new Defence Procurement Minister, Stuart Andrew MP. While opening the new facility that will produce components of the new F35 Lightning Vertical Lift System, we met with employees,
apprentices and graduates. This facility is further proof of the fantastic local engineering sector that plays a vital role in securing
local jobs, as well as the local economy. I am extremely disappointed by the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government’s decision to reject the application for the Cribbs Causeway expansion. This expansion would have provided further brilliant retail options, infrastructure, as well as housing and 3,000 permanent jobs and 3,700 construction jobs. I will be meeting with the Centre Manager at Cribbs Causeway, as well as the Secretary of State to better understand the decision, and to explore what options may be available. I also had the pleasure of visiting a South Gloucestershire farmer, Will Grey, in Tytherington alongside the National Farmers Union’s Will Frazer. Will, whose farm has been run by his family for generations, has invested in
innovative new technology with a state-of-the-art new milking parlour that will revolutionise his farming practices. A major topic discussed was the Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL), that Will had to pay as part of his new investment. The CIL is a planning charge used as a tool for local authorities in England and Wales to help deliver infrastructure to support development and is payable on projects that create net additional floor space. SGS College celebrated a new partnership with Bell Decorating Group, with the launch of the Bell Decorating Academy, which will focus on supplementing the painting and decorating skills taught in the college with hands-on experience. Taking place at the College’s Filton campus, Craig Bell, CEO of Bell Group, presented Katie Bone, Head of Construction at SGS, with a plaque to commemorate the partnership. Craig also took a tour of the College’s construction facilities and spent time speaking with students. Bell Group will now work with students throughout the year, delivering leadership talks, skill set workshops, masterclasses and industry knowledge. Students will also get the chance to be part of local community projects that will benefit people in need. In addition to learning new skills and obtaining industry insight through the Bell Decorating programme, students studying the College’s painting and decorating course will also have a chance to gain valuable work experience and discover a variety of apprenticeship opportunities working with Bell Group.
