Patients raise GPs step down by Rebecca Day Patients at a Filton doctors’ surgery have been left feeling “disappointed” by news that all three members of its management team are due to resign. A statement was released by Northville Family Practice, informing its 5,331 users that from January 15, Dr Amanda Ramshaw, Dr Donna Dickens and Dr Grace Dalley will step down from their management role. It read: “The running of a small general practice has become very challenging in recent years with increasing clinical and administrative demands. During this time we have tried to find a way to continue by looking at joining with other practices and a national GP provider but this has not resulted in any solution.” The surgery in Filton Avenue has assured its patients that it will be “business as usual”, and NHS England is in the process of seeking a new management team. However, the news has left some patients feeling concerned about the surgery’s future. Patient Gareth Vaughan said: “Great doctors who were doing a good job, messed about by an arrogant government. “This won’t go away any time soon and there certainly won’t be a queue of quality GPs lining up to take it on with the conditions
they are expected to work under. “We may all be forced to change doctors.” Another patient, Kirstie Barnes, said: “It’s very disappointing that the doctors are leaving the practice. “It’s also the only practice that I know of that you can get a same-day appointment, this I hope will continue with the new management. “The three doctors who are leaving have always been helpful and have helped my family through some difficult times over the past years and for this, I thank them.” Other patients have also shared their disappointment over being informed about the situation through the press, before receiving a letter from the surgery. Kelly Mills said: “We got a letter only a few weeks back – not good. Surgery seems to be a bit different at the moment – doesn’t have the same feel to it.” Leyann Rolfe commented: “I was disappointed to find out that there were management problems from the news. I only received my letter last week. “However, the surgery appears to be coping well and I've experienced normal service. I really hope they solve the problem as I really like Northville and do not want to change surgeries.” Melanie Drewitt said: “It has

in the day, not surprised they have had enough.” Jeanne Clements said: “It’s a real shame as I’ve been using the practice since I was expecting my first child 17 years ago. “I’ve always felt that my children and I have grown up with the receptionist staff and they are always friendly and polite and it’s been great being able to get an appointment with your chosen GP. “They know the family history which is just not going to happen with a series of locums. However, I do understand the reasoning behind all of this and I wish them all well.” Councillor Ian Scott told the Filtonvoice that he is “worried” about there not being enough GPs to accommodate the vast number of patients, particularly
since Elm Lodge surgery has closed. He said: “I am worried that as a previous GP surgery has already closed in Filton, there are not enough GPs to cope with the number of patients. Filton residents will have to wait even longer to get an appointment. “NHS England have started the process for appointing a new management team and have had a number of expressions of interest. “They are hoping that they will have appointed an organisation to take over by midNovember and at this point NHS England will write to patients with further detail. “With respect to the longer term, NHS England are keen to work with representatives of the local communities to look at

the best solution for the future especially given the housing developments planned for the Filton area. Working with Filton Town Council would be key to this.” NHS England says that it will be working with patients and the local community to find longerterm solutions, particularly with thousands of new homes being planned for the area, which will increase demand. NHS England South West medical contract manager, Caroline Stead, said: “In the short term, it will be business as usual for patients while we quickly find a new interim management team and then oversee a seamless handover to them. We will then be looking at talking to local people about the services they need longer term.”

Penny’s words included the reading of a poem written by Doug which he wished would serve as a way of people remembering him. It was called, appropriately, Doug - The Friendly Guy ... printed on these pages. Filtonvoice editor Richard Coulter added remarks on behalf of the Filton community, paying tribute to Doug’s ability to cross the political spectrum and also to his abilities as a writer. The service included hymns All Things Bright and Beautiful, The Lord’s my Shepherd and Abide with Me. The church choir, organist Viv Wilkinson and soloist Lucy Rodrigues performed Panis Angelicus by Cesar Frank. After the service, guests gathered in the church hall for tea and cake, and took the opportunity to remember Doug. On behalf of his family, Penny said: “Douglas was an important and cherished member of our family and what we have learned since his passing is just how valued and respected he was by his Filton family. “We would like to thank everyone for their kindness; “Douglas would have been truly bowled over to know that he meant so much to the community he loved. Elm Park pavilion to be named after Doug The Pavilion at Elm Park will be named the Doug Daniels Pavilion after a majority vote by town councillors. Three rose beds in the community garden will also be dedicated to Doug with a plaque. The suggestion for the pavillion naming, proposed by chairman Darryl Collins, was carried by eight votes to three. Cllr Stan Sims, who backed the rose garden tribute, said instead a tribute should be created to all councillors who
have served the town but this was rejected by councillors. He said: “One man is not a council - we all do our best and we need to look at all the councillors over the years who have contributed. I’ve got to give Doug credit, he was a good writer, but I can’t support the pavilion being named after him.” Cllrs Alan Tink and Brian Mead also backed the rose garden proposal but not the pavillion renaming. Cllr Tink, who is involved in a group organising a memorial
to Doug, said: “I didn’t vote to rename the Pavilion as it would be setting a precedent for a council room to be named after a councillor. The other reason was that the Bar in the Community Centre is being named after Doug. This is more in line with previous deserving Filton residents (Leslie Harris,William Slatter etc.) who were also involved with many aspects of Filton life as well as the Council. “Rooms in the Community Centre are named for them them.”

Safer Stronger in Patchway merger Filton’s Safer Stronger Community Group (SSCG) will be merged with part of Patchway as South Glos tries to make budget savings. The SSCG was set up originally to provide a link for communties, especially t the police, and are administered by South Glos. The Filton group meets quarterly and discusses residents’ concerns as well as police matters, often focusing on traffic and parking issues. There are 20 Safer and Stronger Community Groups (SSCGs) covering the whole of South Gloucestershire. The boundaries of SSCGs are based on those of local Police Beats. Now, with budgets being reduced by 50 per cent, the council has outlined plans to
merge many of the SSCGs which will mean 14 groups remaining. These newly formed groups will now meet three times a year. The council, along with the police have agreed: • There needs to continue to be coverage across the whole of South Gloucestershire • Boundaries should be based around natural communities and boundaries rather than Police Beats. • Individual SSCGs should as much as possible contain areas where issues are likely to be similar in nature (for example rural or urban rather than mixed) • Wherever possible Parishes should only be covered by one SSCG. • The cost of operating SSCGs needs to be reduced in line with the available budget.

The importance of vaccination ‘Don’t hesitate, vaccinate’ is the message for local pet owners from Filton Vets4Pets as recent reports suggest an increase in disease but also a worrying decrease in vaccination levels amongst pets . A recent survey, which records a wide range of infectious disease diagnoses in dogs, cats and rabbits, demonstrates that in almost all diseases monitored there are reported cases and, in many instances, an increasing trend. Filton remembers the fallen in war Members of the Filton Community Garden placed around 1,000 knitted poppies, many made by the Filton Knitting Group, on the fence at the garden, along with a wreath and poppy cross
A Chelsea Pensioner joined local fundraisers as they launched this year’s Poppy Appeal. Brian Cumming MBE GCStG was welcomed by members of Stoke Gifford’s Royal British Legion branch at a ceremony on October 23, pictured above. The branch covers the Filton area. The event, at Bristol Parkway station, also featured a trumpeter, University of the West of England student Zak Ajjane. Brian said: “It was a pleasure to be asked to help with the Stoke Gifford Poppy Appeal Launch. The money raised is very necessary and will be well used.” The local fundraisers raised a record amount for the 2014/15 appeal, which ended on September 30, collecting more than £48,000, which will help support current and ex-service personnel and their families. Branch press officer David Bell said: “This has been achieved with the generous support of the public, local businesses and other organisations, including the local media, and the work of RBL members and volunteers. “The branch has many excellent volunteers, but always needs more. A fun-filled spooky celebration brings out the community spirit
by Rebecca Day Things got a little bit spooky last month in Cheswick Village, as vampires, witches and other ghoulish characters filled its streets. More than 100 scarily-dressed families attended the Trick or Treat Hunt, which was organised by residents Sejal Hampson and Graeme Snell. Children and adults roamed the estate in search of treats, with the help of a map, which pinpointed all of the participating homes which were giving out goodies. Those who joined in the fun were also treated to a spread of food put on by Beaufort Grange Care Home. In addition, competitions were held for those who joined in the fun, with the local Co-op and Happy Days Nursery donating prizes.
Sejal said: “The event worked brilliantly at bringing residents closer together. “The atmosphere was truly brilliant and had a number of positive effects such as entertaining the children, tackling anti-social behaviour and building community spirit.
“Special thanks to the care home for the fantastic spread that was put on for trick or treaters and the fantastic decorations. “Also thank you to the Co-op and Happy Days Nursery for the prizes donated.” Ideas are now being
welcomed for a Christmas event in the village on December 19, which will be hosted by Sejal and Graeme, and neighbour Holly Stowell. Cheswick residents can contribute their ideas via the Cheswick Village Facebook page.

Bakery chain opens new store to positive response Filton folk don’t have to go far to enjoy a wide range of freshly baked goods, now that a Greggs has come to Gloucester Road North. The bakery chain, which opened on November 4, is part of the new retail outlet in Filton which already encompasses former Morrison’s store, My Local, and a Barnardos charity shop. Customers can choose from a selection of hot and cold savoury snacks, including sausage rolls, cheese and bacon wraps, pizza slices and sandwiches, as well as breakfast items, including omelette baguettes, croissants and porridge. Convenience store is changing hands M Local only opened its doors in Filton earlier this year. Now, it is one of the 140 Morrisons’ convenience stores which have been sold off to My Local. The newly-created chain is headed by retail entrepreneur Mike Greene, and supplied by Nisa Retail as part of a five-year deal worth £1 billion. The sale of the similar sounding “M Local” comes after significant financial losses for Morrisons. Nisa says that all of the staff employed by Morrisons have been kept on.

Vet surgery and pizza takeaway in bid to take over vacant shop units
by Rebecca Day A veterinary surgery and a pizza takeaway could finally be giving two disused premises in Gloucester Road North a new lease of life. Third State Pizza Company and Independent Vetcare Limited have applied for planning permission to develop the former Motaman and Blockbuster stores respectively, which have been lying vacant for over two years. Independent Vetcare Limited, which has four surgeries across the country, including two in Bath, will be employing three staff – two full-time and one part-time. It proposes that it will be open Monday to Friday, 8am to 9pm, and Saturday 8am to 7pm. The pizza company will be employing 35 part-time staff, and will be open until 11.30pm, seven days a week. Several objections have been submitted to the council over the plans for the pizza takeaway, with residents saying that there are already too many takeaways in the area, and it could encourage litter, late-night noise and parking problems. A decision is likely to be made by the end of this month, the council has confirmed.

Calling all musicians ... of all abilities ... new band being formed in Filton There must be any number people living in the South Gloucestershire and Bristol area who learned to play an instrument at school and, for any number of reasons, have never played since. Recent conversations on local radio and social media indicate that many of them would be willing to retrieve their instruments from the loft or in the back of the cupboard if only they could find the right facilities to get them back into playing again. Their wishes are about to be fulfilled. The good news is that local musician Chris Harris, right, has recognised their plight and is forming a new band for that very purpose. It will make it possible for people to enjoy making music with other like-minded players in a relaxed and supportive atmosphere. At the same time specialised help will be on hand to help them to improve their playing skills while at the same time providing valuable playing experience. Openings for other categories of players are provided too. The band, to be called “CONCORD band” will be equally welcoming to middle range players. This category includes people who have attended private lessons for a couple of years or have been a member of an instrument teaching group, or band, for a similar period. Also invited is anyone who can already play an instrument and would like to learn a new one. During their time with the band the members will get the chance to explore all sorts of music such as popular songs of yesterday and today as well as music from films and Broadway shows. A special feature of the tuition will be the right way to play bigband music, or “swing” as it is often called. Once the members feel sufficiently confident they will get the chance to play to small public audiences. It is intended that the band will be a genuine community group and will involve itself in local musical activities, especially charity events. Chris Harris will be the band’s
main tutor; he will also act as conductor. Chris has been acting in similar capacities since 1986 when he first became a Further Education tutor. His career began as a musician in the Royal Air Force Bands where he played the trumpet. When his engagement ended he before became Head of Music at Greenway School, in those days famous for its brass band. He later took over a wind band class in North Bristol in and started a second one the following year. These became permanent bands. Chris will be bringing not only his experience and expertise to Concord band but also a new library of music especially chosen to suit this type of ensemble. He will also be composing a set of special band exercises and a selfcontained course on how to play swing music. There will be no auditions or tests to join but some information about you will be needed. The new band is sharing a website for the moment, so for more details go to www. westerlyshowband.com. Barbers get ‘Mo Bros’ ready for Movember at fundraising night by Rebecca Day Men are putting down their shavers this month in a bid to grow impressive moustaches and raise awareness about men’s health. To mark the start of Movember – a month-long campaign which raises vital funds to treat prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental illness and physical inactivity – Filton Barbers hosted a special evening where those taking part received a hot towel shave, as well as drinks and nibbles. Shaving products and prizes were supplied by The Shave Doctor, food was provided by local convenience store My Local, and beverages by Antix Bar in the city centre. Advertising feature The return to school has proved to be a busy one for those boys on the Scholarship Programme at QEH boys’ school, with a series of Retreat Days held for Years 8 and 9 pupils. This programme is part of the Gifted and Talented provision, and aims to challenge their most academically able boys. Based in the Brecon Beacons for the day, Year 8 pupils explored themes of inspiration and creativity while students from Year 9 spent their day in the Mendip Hills focusing on themes such as civilisation and how they might better contribute to our society. Members of the programme’s very first cohort are now discovering just how well it prepared them for further study. Former pupil Callum Payne, now in his first year studying Law at Cambridge, says: “It accelerated my academic progress, broadening my knowledge and instilling a work ethic.” Initial Year 7 entry to the Scholarship Programme will be offered to boys who score exceptionally highly in the entrance examination on Saturday 9 and 16 January 2016.

Volunteers to be trained to help tackle poverty
Volunteers at foodbank outlets in Filton and North Bristol are to receive special training to help customers sort out their financial difficulties. The Community Advice Champions scheme will see foodbank volunteers in Lockleaze, Filton, Horfield and Southmead receive training in welfare benefits issues, helping them to identify problems and signpost clients to appropriate support. The new scheme, developed by North Bristol Advice Centre in partnership with North Bristol Foodbank, will give foodbank volunteers basic information on what benefits are available, eligibility criteria, changes brought in by welfare reforms, tax credits and how to make a claim. Volunteers will also learn how to fill out charity application forms on behalf of clients. The training is being delivered by the North Bristol Advice Centre, which provides specialist welfare benefits and debt advice across North Bristol and South Gloucestershire. “People who are struggling financially are not always aware that help is available,” said Drew Huskisson, Advice Team Manager at North Bristol
Advice Centre. “The scheme will give foodbank volunteers the background information they need to identify underlying issues and signpost clients to the professional support they desperately need.” In addition to the training course, volunteers will shadow a North Bristol Advice Centre advice worker to see the knowledge and skills that they have learned put into practice. Very many thanks to Doug Daniels’ niece Penny and to Filtonvoice’s editor for the moving and inspiring tributes to Doug at his funeral. I first met him when he joined us at Gypsy Patch from Derby. He then would enthusiastically keep me informed of what was going on in Bristol theatres. Much later it was typical of him, engaged in so many matters, to send me, living in Malvern, copies of Filtonvoice, sometimes enclosed with a hand-written letter and at my 90th party he give a little speech generously describing my engineering abilities. Of my varied experiences, surveying at the local S. Yorkshire pit, serving in the army with Indian Engineers, leaping from Dakotas in Palestine, visiting Tokyo, Moscow, Berlin etc. for ISO, 31 years with what became Rolls-Royce, 62 years a member of Filton Parish Church, married 60 years, walking these Hills, I shall ever value my friendship with Doug. and envy his integrity. Bob Dylan and his band took to the stage promptly at 7.30pm. There was no support act to sit patiently through, the lights went down, the band started to play, the lights came up, and there, centre stage, was his Bobness himself, dressed like a Mississippi riverboat gambler, his fivepiece band all wore red lounge suits. The opening song was Times Have Changed which Dylan wrote especially for the film The Wonder Boys. It’s a wonderful opener, the band were playing like forked lightning and Dylan’s voice sounded great. I wondered what the next song would be ...

I’m not complaining. It was a unique and mesmerising experience that I hope I’ll never forget. When the concert finished, I couldn’t speak for the wonder of it until I was out into the autumn night. And then I couldn’t stop talking about it... I wished he’d played Mr Tambourine Man, mind.

Schools Bristol Technology and Engineering Academy: New research released by the Baker Dearing Educational Trust, a charity that promotes University Technical Colleges (UTCs), including the Bristol Technology and Engineering Academy (BTEA) near Filton, shows that for 66 per cent of parents in Bristol, their biggest fear is that their child will not find a job. Nearly half (48 per cent) of parents in the city said they felt concerned about their child’s education and 80 per cent believed the education system needed to change to reflect 21st century working Britain. BTEA caters for pupils in Years 10 to 13 with a strong focus on engineering and environmental technologies. Principal Rhian Priest said: “This research clearly demonstrates the strong and growing demand among parents for the type of forward-thinking educational experience which is being provided by UTCs.”
Filton Hill Primary: A group of Year 4 children from Filton Hill Primary performed an African Dance at the Engage Festival at the WISE campus last month. A dance teacher worked with them all term and the children really enjoyed learning the moves! Happy Days Nurseries have opened their second Bristol based nursery at Long Down Avenue, Cheswick Village, North Bristol, following the opening of their Bradley Stoke nursery earlier this year. These ratings reflect Happy Day’s strong management team and well-developed infrastructure. Trio call off 10,000ft charity skydive – and jump from 15,000ft instead!
by Rebecca Day Three local residents showed huge amounts of bravery, leaping 15,000ft from a plane to raise funds for youth and community charity FACE Filton. Andy Shepherd, Cath Challinor and Rick Elliott have raised around £750 for the project, which works with people of all ages to improve their community participation, skills and learning, health and wellbeing, and activity and workreadiness. FACE (Foundation for Active Community Engagement) has been operating for over 60 years, and is based at St Andrew’s Methodist Youth Centre in Elm Park. The challenge was carried out with tandem skydiving specialists GoSkydive, based at Old Sarum Airfield just outside Salisbury. The trio were meant to jump
Rich Elliott, Cath Challinor and Andy Shepherd putting on brave faces before jumping 15,000ft; Cath during the skydive, right on October 24, but were set back a day due to cloudy conditions. They had booked in to jump from 10,000ft, but courageously made a last-minute decision on the day to increase the height. Debbie Teml, charity manager, said: “We were so pleased at the commitment
and also bravery of the three jumpers; they gave up practically their whole weekend to travel to and from Salisbury on both days. They jumped an extra 5,000ft and raised lots of money for FACE. They were great. “[GoSkydive] were also brilliant.”
Spaces are available for another jump to raise funds for FACE Filton on November 28. Each person can jump for free, but needs to raise at least £350 in sponsorship. Filton charity shop urging exchange of favourite toys
Barnardo’s sales assistant Lisa Taylor promotes the Argos Toy Exchange A Filton charity shop is helping to promote a national ‘toy exchange’ to raise money for vulnerable children. The Barnardo’s team on Gloucester Road North are inviting residents to give a new lease of life to pre-loved teddy bears, dolls, action figures and games. Supporters can take donations to their local Barnardo’s or Argos stores until November 20 in return for a £5 voucher towards the cost of new toys (minimum spend £35) to be redeemed at Argos by December 24.
This is the fourth year of the campaign, which last year raised £560,000 for the charity. Barnardo’s shop manager Zoe Carter said: “The Argos Toy Exchange encourages people to think about recycling their unwanted items, and the funds raised will help to make a big difference to the lives of vulnerable children across the UK. “We support some of the most disadvantaged children and young people, such as those growing up in poverty, and those living in care.

Students meet possible employers From film making to forensics, students from the Filton area and other secondary schools and academies got a taste of their future employment prospects at a local careers event. Held at the University of the West of England’s Frenchay campus, teenagers had direct access to 120 local and national employers along with staff from colleges and universities who were on hand to help guide the students through their future options. Chair of South Gloucestershire Council Cllr Erica Williams attended the event. She said: “Ambitions is an inspiration for young people looking to secure a highly skilled job in South Gloucestershire. “Over the two days, this hands-on event provides the students with a unique opportunity to talk to employers and those in higher education about the knowledge, skills and attitude needed to excel in their chosen career.” The Ambitions Careers event is organised by South Gloucestershire Council, the University of the West of England and South Gloucestershire & Stroud College (SGS) and has been running for several years. It is one of the largest events of its kind in the South West with more than 10,000 Year 9 students taking part.

Doug, we missed you
Club members hold a minute’s silence before their visit to visit Batsford Arboretum for Doug Daniels, who often wrote accounts of visits by Filton Garden Club In October, 46 members and friends of Filton Garden Club made an enjoyable outing to Batsford Arboretum near Morton-in-the-Marsh in the Cotwolds. Before setting off we held a minute’s silence in memory of the late Doug Daniels who had accompanied the club on many occasions and had written previous accounts of the trips for Filton Voice.
The journey itself was very enjoyable with the countryside bright with autumn colours. We left Filton in light rain but as we went north it improved and we arrived to a dry day with several hours of autumn sun. We were greeted on arrival at the Arboretum by the receptionist who gave us a brief history of the house and the estate. The estate was acquired by Mr A B Freeman Mitford
in the 1880s. He demolished the centuries old house and formal gardens and had built a handsome neo-Elizabethan mansion. Youngsters converge on Filton to end myths about ‘geeky’ careers More than 280 students aged 12 to 13 from across the South West visited Filton to experience firsthand how exciting it could be to work in a high-tech engineering environment at the Airbus sponsored TeenTech West event.
The TeenTech experience is highly interactive and designed to inspire young people and their teachers about how science, engineering and technology is used in the business world. The event targets students before they
make their GCSE subject choices, with the aim of dispelling gender stereotypes and shifting perceptions of careers teenagers may have previously considered “difficult”, “geeky” or “boring”. Students from schools in
Bristol, South Gloucestershire, Bath and North East Somerset took part alongside 25 local and national companies including Active Robots, Airbus, Atkins, JVC, National Grid, and Renishaw.

News A new sporting initiative launched in Filton called the SportsPound has been given the go-ahead thanks to £171,324 funding from Sport England. The SportsPound will come in the form of free vouchers that can be exchanged for a variety of sports sessions from aquarobics to zumba. A successful pilot held in Filton recently saw the start-up of a regular new netball session as a result of SportsPound, with many local residents trying aquarobics, ladies’ fitness and bowls for the first time. The SportsPound project is planned to launch in communities across South Gloucestershire from early 2016, with bases in Filton, Cadbury Heath, Kingswood, Patchway, Staple Hill and Yate. Funded by Sport England, the project will last for three years and will be run by South Gloucestershire Council alongside partners such as leisure centres and sports clubs to create innovative ways to help people to become more active. SportsPound ‘activators’ will be based in each of the six priority neighbourhood areas of South Gloucestershire, and will create new and exciting sports opportunities based on the wants and needs of the local community. These activators will also give out the SportsPound vouchers to those who are either new to sport, or are coming back to sport after a break, who will be able to use them to gain free entry to these sessions. Congestion warning as Southmead Hospital work enters final phase Visitors to Southmead Hospital will see further changes to the site as improvement works enter the final phase. Works are due to start to improve roads and access as part of the ongoing redevelopment. Hospital bosses say works to the existing roads, which started late last month, could lead to congestion around the site. Traffic lights will be set up to control the flow of vehicles around the hospital to make way for work to build a new roundabout on Beaufort Way, which will become part of the new access from Southmead Road once works are complete. The changes to the road layout are part of the second phase of the redevelopment project, which includes the planned extension of the Brunel building.
The frame of the multi-storey car park behind the new hospital has now been completed. The new patient and visitor parking facilities will enable people to walk directly into the Brunel building from the car park. Redevelopment work will also see three additional bus stops at the front of the hospital and more green space along with additional cycle spaces and staff parking. North Bristol NHS Trust Project Manager Martin Warren said: “The works to change the road layout on the Southmead Hospital site over the coming months are likely to cause disruption to people driving on to the site and we ask patients, visitors and staff to bear with us during this time. We are working with Carillion to get the new car park open as soon as possible.”

Southmead Hospital’s Neo-natal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) has opened a new family sensory room. The room has been funded by Southmead Hospital Charity through fundraising by NICU supporters. It means that for the first time families can interact with their babies in a non-clinical environment that is still within the NICU unit - important for infection control. The room has specialist sensory equipment as well as reclining chairs that mums can relax in and enjoy important skin to skin contact time with their babies.

with Graham Simmonds of goto iT What are Windows updates? In this article I am only going to talk about updates for Microsoft
Windows. Once a week you will usually see a notification that your computer is installing updates. But what are they? If Microsoft or other experts have found security issues with Windows, they will release a new program that will fix the problem. For example, there could be a program that has a security flaw that could allow someone to take over your PC or they can also be performance improvements to help the system run faster or be compatible. Generally it is a good idea to install updates, but occasionally an update can be released that causes problems. Fortunately
this is very rare, but it just makes it important that you have a good regular backup of your system in case anything goes wrong. Windows 7, 8 and 10 updates are automatic and you would have to go out of your way to turn them off. The updates are normally released on Wednesday each week, but more important ones can be released at any time. Every so often you may also receive a Service Pack. This is a collection of updates and Windows improvements in one big download. A bit like an update to your car where the manufacturer might give you
better suspension or brakes but basically the car is still the same. These updates are different to the new upgrade to Windows 10 which we have covered in previous months. This is a more fundamental change to the system which you need to consider carefully and you would have to implement yourself.
