Jack Lopresti back as Filton’s MP as majority close to 10,000 Result
Jack Lopresti, Conservative 22,920 Ian Boulton, Labour 13,082 Ben Walker, UKIP 7,261 Pete Bruce, Lib Dem 3,581 Dr Diana Warner, Green 2,257 Voters in Filton and Bradley Stoke echoed the voice of the nation with Tory MP Jack Lopresti triumphing with an increased majority on Friday morning. Mr Lopresti again locked horns with Labour’s Ian Boulton who in 2010 he had beaten by almost 7,000 votes, and gained an even bigger advantage – 9,838 - this time around. Returning officer Natalie Carr finally announced the result at 6am on Friday – three and a half hours later than had been predicted and in a hall at WISE Campus that had drawn a series of complaints because of the plunging temperature. Only shortly beforehand she was able to reveal that voter turnout for the seat was 69 per cent – a total of 49, 231 votes.
This is one per cent lower than the 2010 election. Ms Carr announced that Mr Lopresti had received 22,920 votes with Mr Boulton a distant second with 13,082 votes. Behind them UKIP’s Ben Walker recorded 7,261 votes – a huge increase on the 1,506 secured by John Knight, UKIP’s parliamentary candidate for Filton and Bradley Stoke in 2010. However Liberal Democrat Pete Bruce registered just 3,581 –a huge loss compared to Peter Tyzack who ran in 2010 for the party and recorded more than 12,000 votes. Bringing up the rear was Dr Diana Warner of the Green Party with 2,257. Following his victory Mr Lopresti said he was “honoured” to have been voted in for a

He said that now confirmed again as MP, his priorities were securing jobs for the area through the security and defence review, supporting social mobility – particularly apprenticeships, and continuing to push for a local transport
infrastructure with focus on the Metrobus, electrification and the Henbury Loop. Mr Boulton was gallant in defeat. “All I can say is I wish (Jack) all the very best for the next five years and I trust he will represent
all of us who live here to the best of his ability,” he said. Mr Walker of UKIP said: “Obviously I would like to have come first but when you think in the last election we got just 1,500 votes, this was a big increase,” he said.

Lengthen your legs out of your hips and draw your lower stomach muscles back. 2. Allow your sternum to reach forward and lift up to the wall in front of you and feel your thoracic spine (part of the spine in-between shoulder blades) move into extension. 3. Maintain the extension in the thoracic spine and press up allowing your hips to open. Lift and draw your lower tummy in, to stop your lower back
over working. Feel your arms drawing into your back and your shoulders away from you ears. 4. Begin to lower back down by bending the elbows, lengthening your spine forward and legs back. 1

It’s business as usual in Filton, following the recent South Glos Council elections. Labour candidates Roger Hutchinson, Adam Monk and Ian Scott, pictured, all retained their positions as Filton councillors. Cllr Hutchinson, re-elected in as a Filton representative, wrote on the Filton News and Views Facebook page: “I would like to say thank you to all those who voted Labour on Thursday for myself, Adam Monk and Ian Scott. “[We] look forward to the four years ahead and will do all in our power to represent our community here in Filton, as I believe we have done over the past four years. “Filton has changed over the past few years and that change has created challenges, as have the cuts in Government grants which will continue and may now be even more severe. “We will respond and do all that we can to help to make Filton the good place in which to live that we all know that it is.”
Cllr Monk said: “I am very pleased to have been re-elected to represent Filton at South Gloucestershire Council, and I intend to continue to work hard for the residents of Filton. “I’d also like to highlight our weekly surgeries, held every Saturday, 9.30-10.30am at Filton Library. No appointment is needed and we will do our best to help you.” Cllr Scott said: “I would like to thank the residents of Filton for voting in the elections. “The Government will now have to declare where they are going to continue to make cuts in public services and we will soon see what impact this will have on Filton and the rest of South Gloucestershire. “l will continue to advocate on behalf of Filton.” Cllr Hutchinson received 1,675 votes, Cllr Monk, 1,608 votes, and Cllr Scott, 1,546 votes. They held off opposition from three UKIP candidates, three Conservative, three Lib Dem and two Green.

Elected to represent Charborough ward are Labour councillors Adam Monk and Ian Scott, and UKIP’s Alan Tink. Labour’s Sam Scott was unsuccessful. Tories Anne Kenyon, Maria Silveira and John Tucker, UKIP’s Keith Briffet,
and Labour and Co-operative’s Brian Mead will be representing the Conygre ward, and Labour’s Darryl Collins, and Stan Sims, Independent Bill Moore and Conservative Doug Daniels will be representing Northville ward. All the representatives for Northville and Conygre were elected uncontested. Independents Brian Freeguard, Rikki Teml and Kieran Hyde; Independent Labour’s Melanie Drewitt, Labour’s Andrew Chubb and co-opted member John Beacham did not re-stand for election.

Problem family order extended A family which caused problems for neighbours in Charles Road, Filton has been ordered to stay out of the home for another three months, it has been reported. The family, with their three teenage children, were ordered out of the Charles Road house in February after complains of verbal and homophobic abuse and criminal damage. The closure order lasted for three months, but South Gloucestershire Council has now been back to the courts and extended the order again, banning the family from living at the privately rented home, be extended until August 8, according to the Bristol Post. In the report, the family say they were used as a scapegoat by police and council, but residents said since the family were made to leave anti-social behaviour had dramatically dropped. Neighbours complained the family would often have a large group of youths gathering around their home. They said
car windows and mirrors were being smashed and motorised scooters were aggressively driven at people. Homophobic abuse was also shouted at residents from the home on the corner of Hunters Way. One neighbour, who was not named by The Post, said: “There has been a dramatic drop in the anti-social behaviour and people are grateful, but there is still some trepidation about what will happen in August and if they will come back.” The order gained at court was the first in South Gloucestershire gained through the use of a community trigger, where residents can ask for a review of the situation. A spokesman for the council person said they had returned to court to extend the order. He said: “The benefit of extending the closure notice means the family are elsewhere and the victims of anti-social are protected.”

Council to investigate handing over the management of sports centre Councillors have agreed to investigate the possible outsourcing of Filton Sports and Leisure Centre. At a meeting of the town council last month, councillors agreed by nine votes to two to “formally investigate all options of partnership for the management of the Leisure facilities”. This could lead to the management of the centre being taken out of the town council’s hands. One scenario could be that the council would retain ownership of the centre but pay an outside company to manage the facility. This would mean pricing and staffing levels would no longer be within the control of the town council. Recent meetings have revealed that the council is facing some tough financial decisions, with reserve funds dropping far below recommended levels. Part of this has been costs associated with the running of the leisure centre. At the meeting, a number of councillors felt that this decision should be made by the new Council in May. It was however made clear that the motion was merely to formally investigate the feasibility, not to make a decision on the future of the centre. Cllr Adam Monk, who propsed the investigation, said: “Until there is a debate, we won’t know the right way forward.
“The council would lose control over matters such as staffing but also, the precept (Filton element of council tax) would be reduced.” Last month, Cllr Kieran Hyde said the authority had had a ‘shocking’ year financially One resident said he feared that with a balance in council coffers of just £46,902 at the end of the year, and budgets missing their targets last year, if the situation were to be repeated, the council would be ‘insolvent’. Council chairman Rikki Teml said an action plan was in place which had been accepted by the finance committee.

Sun shines on primary’s sale day Dozens of people braved an early morning shower to attend Shield Rd School’s May Table Top Sale and Car boot sale on what actually turned out to be a sunny Saturday morning. The hardy “Booters” were rewarded with in excess of 30 traders selling all manner of pre-loved items, an array home baked cakes, toys and nearly new clothing. Ice creams and breakfast rolls were also going down well The event was the latest in a challenging but fun series of fundraisers organised by the Friends of Shield Rd School (FOSR) to supplement to the exciting changes planned at this successful local primary. Because of its consistent academic and community success, the school has been asked by South Gloucestershire Council to “breach” or add new reception classes for the next two years, however unlike on other occasions where successful schools have be asked to accommodate a new intake with ad hoc arrangements, the LEA have underpinned their faith in the school by implementing a building programme that will see brand new state of the art reception facilities, including classrooms showers disabled toilets etc. Work has already started and should be complete in time for the new children in September. Vice Chair of FOSR Louise Davies said: “ It is a really exciting time for the school and it’s fantastic that the it is getting the physical improvements that reflect its academic achievements in recent years. This will finally give it the WOW factor it deserves. We at FOSR are working hard to provide the funds for additional equipment that will put the icing on the cake for our children. We have already bought an array of new games for lunchtimes and are planning a brand new climbing wall and Jungle Gym for the school grounds. Today’s event has raised nearly £400 and I would like to thanks all who given up their time to either plan, bake, advertise, sell at, or attend the event. Vision for growing Filton primary Images have been released to show how a Filton primary school will look as they prepare for the first two-class reception intake for several years. The artist’s impressions show the new covered area and extra classroom at Shield Road Primary. As part of the designs there will also be a covered outdoor play area for the youngest children. And there will be further expansion next year with the 2016/17 reception class likely to be two-class entry. As Filtonvoice reported in March, the school in Northville had two classes per year several years ago but falling numbers and the creation of the Bluebells Nursery limited the opportunities to grow. Now, after the recent positive Ofsted report, numbers are set to rise again.

Everything in the garden’s lovely Filton Community Garden Committee has been reflecting on a successful 2014 ... as well as looking forward to the future. In a report to the town council, chairman Dave Mikkelson said: “The perfect start to 2014 was the award of Outstanding by the Royal Horticultural Society.” He said other highlights included work on the school and FACE flower beds. Beds are now being prepared ahead of the twinning visit in
August which will include a party in the garden with flowers in the French and German national colours. Although the Filton Festival has been cancelled this year the garden committee is still going to hold an event in the garden with more activities than last year, on 12th July. Looking to the future, the group is still researching the feasibility of a bandstand and an entrance into the garden from Springfields.

McDonald’s staff team up to give neighbourhood a spring clean
McDonald’s staff joined residents to take away more than 20 bags of rubbish from a litter hotspot in Filton. Armed with litter pickers, the team of 27 gathered rubbish discarded on the cycle path that leads from the Filton Abbey Wood restaurant to the train station. McDonald’s franchisee Mike Guerin, who runs the Filton branch along with several others across Bristol, said the aim of the clean-up was to help encourage the local community to take responsibility for keeping their neighbourhood litter-free and to take pride in the local environment. He said: “I’d like to thank everyone involved on the day for their hard work and for helping to set an example of what

Credit Union seeks Filton people Loans, new accounts and quality banking services will soon be available to people in Filton with the launch of a wide range of services by Bristol Credit Union (BCU). The BCU service point will be available every Thursday from the 14th May, 9.30am to 11.30am at Filton Community Association, helping local people make the most of their money, by giving them access to affordable loans, competitive savings accounts and quality banking services. The service point will be run by a team of volunteers from the local area, and people will be able to drop in to open an account, deposit money or find out more about BCU services. The new service is a result of a partnership with South Gloucestershire Council, ‘Filton Working Together’ group and Bristol Credit Union. Kate Hanks, Deputy CEO of
Bristol Credit Union, said: “We are delighted to be partnering with South Gloucestershire Council and the Filton Working Together group. We’ve already had a fantastic response from the local community from our call
out for volunteers who will help local people access BCU services. “We look forward to welcoming new BCU members from the Filton area’.” To celebrate the launch of the service point, BCU are offering free membership to anyone who joins before the 30th June. Becoming a member of Bristol Credit Union costs £3.50 - £2.50 to become a member and £1 to open an account. by Rebecca Day Filton town clerk Lesley Reuben has been commended for her swift efforts to stop a group of travellers settling in Elm Park. Ms Reuben says that as soon as she saw them pull up to the field on April 29, she ran out of the council offices – located in the park – to confront the group. One of the men then proceeded to cut off the locks on the bollards to allow the rest of the travellers to drive their caravans onto the field, Ms Reuben says. “As soon as I saw them pulling up to the field, I knew I just couldn't let it happen so I ran out,” she said. “I told the man, ‘You can’t do that’, and he responded, ‘Just watch, my love’. He then cut the locks and they drove off at speed onto the field.” Ms Reuben then called the police, who came out immediately. According to the town clerk, there were around eight caravans that made it onto the field, and

there were a further 10 waiting to enter. She added: “When the police arrived, we gave them a choice – they either get arrested for damaging the locks, or they leave the site, so they drove off quickly.”

Definite pat on the back for that one.” Ken Hoare also wrote on Facebook: “Well done to all involved, you all did a great job.” Samantha Louise Radford added: “It was super quick!”

Richard’s courage inspires friends’ by Rebecca Day A group of friends will be pushing their fears aside to leap 10,000ft from a plane in memory of Richard Masters and the courage he showed in his battle with cancer. Richard, 35, sadly lost his battle to non-Hodgkins lymphoma, a rare cancer which develops in the vessels and glands, last October. He was given only weeks to live on two occasions, but fought the cancer for three years. Richard left behind wife LeeAnne and son Soul, 7. Many of the 15 people taking part in the skydive, on June 21 at Old Sarum Airfield in Wiltshire, are fellow fathers of children attending Charborough Road Primary in Filton, the school Soul attends. One of the dads, Chris Gregory, says he is hoping to raise awareness of the rare

“We have formed a tight-knit group [at Charborough Primary] over the years and regularly socialise, so it was a natural step to raise this idea with them and, as expected, they have all risen to the challenge brilliantly.” Chris, who lost his own father at the same age as Richard’s son, says that he is “very scared” at
the prospect of the jump, as he has a fear of heights and finds it difficult even parking in high-rise car parks. “When I decided I needed to do something to honour Rich’s memory, I knew it would have to be something really challenging, really out of my comfort zone. “I wanted to try to emulate a tiny fraction of the bravery that Rich and Lee-Anne have shown during his struggle – and parachuting stood out as the hardest test I could possibly undertake. “I never heard Rich once moan or think it was unfair. He had a fantastic sense of humour throughout and never missed an opportunity to rib us.” The group have set themselves a target of raising £4,000 for St Peter’s Hospice, but Chris says that they are keen to raise as much money as possible. “I hope that the money will be

“Nothing I say would ever come close to explaining what Rich was like or how much I love and miss him. “Rich had a strong Christian faith, which he liked to share, and he always said that this was what gave him the strength to fight his illness and love for life and people. “The parachute jump for St Peter’s Hospice means so much to me and the other guys as it’s a big event and a challenge for every one of us, but also we’re doing this to remember Rich who brought a lot of happiness and love into our lives. “St Peter’s Hospice do a fantastic job, showing real love and care for people and their families.” The group are now calling on Filton folk to help them raise as much money as possible. Jo’s run raises thousands for carers by Rebecca Day Filton mum Jo Snow’s marathon run has raised an astounding £4,675 for the Jessie May Trust – a charity which cares for her daughter. Jo, who has never taken part in a long-distance running event before, completed the London Marathon in four hours and 47 minutes. Her daughter Stella, six, suffers from a rare condition called polymicrogyria – a developmental malformation of the brain, which she was
diagnosed with at birth. Jo, 41, told supporters on her Virgin Money Giving page: “It was a mixture of emotions throughout the day. “Blubbing at the start, giving myself pep talks at miles that were dull or tough and also complete elation when I managed to actually spot and run up to friends and family dotted around the course, not to mention the obvious relief at the end having actually achieved my goal. Amazing! I loved it."

I presume it served some useful purpose during its brief appearance? Anybody know what happened to the dog waste bin at the top of Dunkeld Avenue? It just vanished! Would you like me to leave it in a neat pile there until the bin is back or generally wander around with it until some opportune moment presents itself? Is there any point to the two large and no doubt expensive electronically controlled No Entry signs on Kenmore Crescent at the top of the hill? Final victory for Filton stars On Sunday 19 April, St Vallier Under 10s played their eagerly anticipated final against Mangotsfield Reds at Elm Park. Having won their previous three games to top their mini group, the boys had waited several weeks to find out which of the other group winners they would be pitted against, and now that the match had finally come around, a large crowd turned out to add their support. The final consisted of two games of 7-a-side, each lasting a total of 40 minutes. In the first match, St Vallier fell behind twice but managed to draw 2-2 thanks to two goals from Harvey Jones.
So the second match started with everything still to play for. After an edgy start, St Vallier took the lead through a goal from Chesney Parsons. A short time later, he scored a second, but Mangotsfield managed to pull one back before half time. The two goal lead was restored in the second half through a goal by Harrison Bailey, and he then went on to convert a late penalty to ease any last minute nerves and seal the victory by an overall score of 6 goals to 3. Congratulations to the boys on this terrific result, and also to coaches Lee Bailey and Jason Parsons for their encouragement.

And in years to come, as nature gradually enters into a collaboration with the artist, like the abandoned barges protecting the bank of the River Severn from erosion at Purton. I love the way they now appear to be diving beneath or emerging from a wash of grass seeds, as if they are semisubmarines. I do hope Bristol City Council will have a rethink and keep the fishing boats of Leigh Woods in place for a lot longer. Hmm, surface-underwater ships ... what is it I’m thinking of? The Dawn Treader? The Lady of the Lake? ... Nah, it’s Marine Boy!
Drivers warned of major work on M5 Major highway works to improve traffic flow at Junction 17 of the M5 are under way, with a number of lane closures and diversions in place until the bank holiday on May 25. Following a successful bid for £1.14 million of pinch point funding last year, the scheme is aimed at tackling capacity issues on the local road network at the junction. Lane closures started on Saturday, May 9, and were expected to last for around two weeks, with all lanes fully operational by May 25. Mark King, head of streetcare and transport, said: “This

Two woodland groups local to Filton - Splatts Abbey Wood Conservation Group and Sims Hill Community Woodland need greater links with the local community, including getting more local volunteers involved in the groups and the woodlands themselves. The woodlands are open to the public. The public can get involved in the woodland groups as members, volunteers on work days, and even join their committees. The Splatts Abbey Wood Conservation Group is responsible for the historic woodland sited between the MoD and the UWE. It can trace the wood’s roots back centuries. Its committee currently has members of the public from Stoke Gifford, Filton and Bradley Stoke on it, and also Susie Weaver, the head teacher of the new Wallscourt Farm Academy School. Group is celebrating a milestone year for ‘the father of twinning’ A man regarded as the “father” of Filton Twinning has recently celebrated his 90th birthday – as the local association prepares to mark its 40th year. Roy Isaacs, right, served as the association’s president for many years and, as Douglas Daniels explains, helped to forge healing and long-lasting friendships. The community is also preparing for a visit from its two twin towns – St Vallier in France and Witzenhausen in Germany – and Douglas says there is a chance for residents to get involved in welcoming the guests in July. When Filton linked with its French twin town St Vallier and later with Witzenhausen in Germany it was during a period of reconciliation. It was during the aftermath of the wartime years when relations, previously fraught with anger, were in the process of being healed. This brought the beginning of a better understanding. We were attempting to recreate better relations with those around us. First it involved St Vallier through engineers working on Concorde. It was followed shortly afterwards by Witzenhausen, which had itself established firm links with St Vallier through a trade exhibition visit. With Witzenhausen situated beside the border separating East and West Germany it was a “risky” partnership. Yet it
pointed the way ahead to its eventual reunification. The late Alderman Eric Smith, MBE, a spares superintendent at the aircraft firm (BAC) and himself a Filton councillor, combined with Roy Isaacs, a supplies executive at the same firm. And so began the three-town link. It was characteristically identified as “The Twinning Triangle” due to their respective locations forming it. It was a unique partnership, believed to be the first of its kind in the UK. It created friendships with those in the twinned towns that were akin to relations between families, so close they have become. What has transpired over 40 years could fill a book. Visits between the towns – initially regarded as “adventures” – are now commonplace due to vastly improved communications. Suffice it to concentrate on

Arriving at Filton Community Centre at around 5.30pm on July 30, visitors from Witzenhausen and St Vallier will partake in a busy week of events and excursions presenting the best we have to offer. They will be returning on Wednesday, August 5, 2015. Supported by Filton Town Council, it is presenting a challenge for the association’s hospitality officer, Carole
Duckett, who is required to secure hosting and accommodation for a wideranging list of guests. This will involve accommodation with families where possible, and hotels also acting as welcoming

Primary gets into election spirit with a visit to House of Commons
Pupils and staff from St Teresa’s Primary enjoyed a visit to Westminster last month, just before the General Election Mrs Land, Mrs Jackson and Ms McGreal enjoyed accompanying Dylan, Matt, Samantha, Rubin, Tobe, Arppan and James to the Houses of Parliament. They had a fantastic tour and learned lots about the history of Parliament as well as lots

Advice evening for adult learners SGS College has extended the courses it offers at its Filton campus to help adults into higher education. Firm helps children take to the skies at fun day Young people from Bristol took to the skies over their home city thanks to funding from Filtonbased Airbus. More than 40 youngsters, aged from seven to 16, from the charity Kids Company were treated to light aircraft flights with Bristol and Wessex Flying Club from Bristol Airport. Airbus teamed up with UK aviation charity fly2help and Bristol Airport to host Air Smiles Day last month, an actionpacked fun day on the airfield. Besides the light aircraft flights, youngsters got to take part in activities with Avon and Somerset Police and local police cadets and look at firefighting equipment and kit with the airport’s fire and safety team. The group also graduated from the Airbus Wing Academy by testing and flying model aircraft.
Fly2help volunteers with one of the aircraft that flew children around the skies of Bristol Esther Keller, director of services at Kids Company Bristol, said: “We are absolutely delighted that fly2help and Airbus have offered us this marvellous opportunity for our young people. They don’t often get the chance to experience such an exciting adventure. “The children have been very
excited about this for a long time. We can’t thank Airbus enough for their generosity.” Kids Company provides practical, emotional and educational support to vulnerable children, young people and families, many of whom have experienced trauma, neglect and deprivation.

Budding bakers
Youngsters from Filton’s Pyramid Youth Club rose to a baking challenge, working in pairs to create some tasty cakes. The inters group, aged 10 and 11, chose their own recipes with two pairs making filled sponges, one duo baking fairy cakes and the fourth pair serving up a traybake of chocolate brownies. Besides a little help with turning on the ovens and weighing some of the ingredients, the budding bakers followed the recipes by themselves and group leaders said the cakes all turned out brilliantly with each pair working very well together and thoroughly enjoying the challenge.

Charity funds new technology to bring back old memories New computer software will be helping to bring back treasured memories for dementia and neurology patients at Southmead Hospital, thanks to £10,000 of funding. Music, video clips, photos and radio shows dating back to the 1930s will all be available on a touchscreen system that can be used at patients’ bedsides. The My Life “interactive reminiscence” software also includes archive pictures and newsreels of Bristol and the surrounding area from wartime to the present day. Funding for the two aids, which are being used with complex care patients, many of whom have dementia as well as those who have suffered a stroke or brain injury, was provided by Southmead Hospital Charity through its Christmas Cracker Appeal. Staff were invited to apply to the charity for funding for projects to benefit patients that go beyond NHS provision. Jet O’Neill, dementia care matron for North Bristol NHS Trust, said: “Complex care patients that have dementia or cognitive impairment are in an unfamiliar environment. The use of this digital technology enhances the engagement of staff with patients, helping to reduce agitation and anxiety. “There is a growing awareness in the NHS of the need to identify creative interventions to support patients. The digital reminiscence software can capture memories about individual patients from across their lives in one place to create something really meaningful. “It enables nursing staff and

Web app to help patients pick hospital South Gloucestershire Clinical Commissioning Group has launched a new online tool to help local NHS patients choose where to receive planned hospital care. Patients and their doctors can use the “Waiting Time on the Web” application to check

Academy students reach the final of robotic competition BTE Academy
Three Year 12 students from the BTE Academy near Filton made and designed a robot for the student robotics competition taking place at Newbury Racecourse. Not only did the students create the robot during the academic year, they also wrote the code to operate it. Forty eight teams entered from all over the South of England. To reach the final, the students competed in over 20 league matches. With only 20 minutes between each match they worked extremely efficiently to improve their code from match to match. During the knockout rounds the robot proved to be very reliable, getting the students through to the final. In the end the team came 4th out of 48 teams. The students, accompanied by Ms McLaughlin, were Devon Till, Liam Roebuck and Rob Randall with their robot ‘Meals
on Wheels’. The students have already begun to discuss tactics for next year. Liam said: “I really felt that the competition was interesting and not what I expected, the competition tested our skill set that we have developed whilst studying at the academy. “I learnt how to code and realised it is full of real-world potential.” Student Rob said: “After a
week of working up to and past midnight we still thought we would not get very far, however we got to the final where we were close to a first place finish. Now that we have the experience, we will be a dominating factor for sure.” Devon said: “The whole event was well organised and fun. I am extremely surprised and pleased that we got through all the way to the finals!”
The BTE Academy specialises in engineering for 14-18 year olds. Students gain a mix of academic qualifications, specialist knowledge and workbased skills. A UWE Science morning was held at Shield Road Primary Children at Shield Road had a very busy week last week, taking part in a whole range of science activities. For the last few years, the school has worked in close partnership with the University of West of England, particularly in the area of Science. Over two mornings, the children worked as real scientists, studying materials, skeletons, effects on the human body, habitats, chemical reactions and much, much more. They worked alongside UWE students to do research, investigations and experiments. The children , across the age

The school hosted a coffee afternoon in support of the I'm One campaign: General Election campaign 2015 to raise awareness of autism. A group of children from inclusion spoke about their perspective of living with autism. After a question and answer session with our local candidates for the parliamentary seat in Filton and Bradley Stoke Jack Lopresti and Ian Boulton, the children then gave a tour of the inclusion facilities. Tenaya Williams-Cargill has proven that she is a dab-hand in the kitchen. The Year 9 Orchard pupil was crowned Young Chef of the Year 2015 at a recent final of the Bristol Healthy School Awards held at Bordeaux Quay in Bristol’s harbourside. Tenaya was selected alongside other Orchard hopefuls Joshna Johnson and Suzanna Rowley - who are also in Year 9 - out of hundreds of other applicants. They had to design a healthy meal and dessert that focused on using locally sourced ingredients, on an affordable budget. Out of the seven finalists, Tenaya won the award with her main course of bourbon marinated salmon, sweet potato mash and green beans. Her dessert was a fruit compote, with chantae cream and shortbread biscuit. The awards, which are run in partnership with Bristol Food Connections, are designed to encourage children to get

cooking, and highlight the nutritious food grown in local areas. Bristol mayor, George Ferguson, said: “In 2013 I launched the Mayor’s Award for schools to recognise outstanding work in Bristol promoting the health and wellbeing of young people. Students had the chance to question him on his military background - from his early days at Sandhurst to service all round the world - and also had conversations about voting age, Europe and tuition fees. He told the students that negative public perceptions of politicians are often different from the reality. The visit was given coverage on BBC Points West as part of a feature about the importance of registering to vote. General Sir Peter was visiting Orchard School as part of a programme called Speakers for Schools in which he has
participated since his retirement from the Army. l Orchard’s girls’ handball team is celebrating after being crowned South West champions. The girls got through to the regional finals after winning the Avon title, and will now be competing in the nationals. The girls are pictured after their success.
