Council tax to rise to nearly £2,000 ... but town council precept less than expected Filton residents are facing a lower increase in the town council precept than originally proposed, with the average household set to pay £8.99 more. This is on top of the South Glos increase of 2.99%, making the total average council tax bill in Filton, once fire and police precepts are added, nearly £2,000 a year, up from £1,917 last year. The Filton precept rise which pays for town council services - has been set at 4.05%. A counter proposal by Cllr Alan Tink for a 2.5% rise was rejected by a majority of councillors. For the year, the Filton element of Council Tax will be approximately £225. In December, it was proposed that the precept would rise by 7.5% (£15/year) but accountant Derek Kemp, having looked at three more months of accounts, said he was confident a budget could be set with just the 4.05% rise. He said it was "realistic, representative and achievable." He added that the cost savings measures recently introduced at
the leisure centre would have a benefit. Earlier in the financial year, budgets were under pressure due to sickness and absence among leisure centre staff. Mr Kemp added that revenue from public swimming was reduced due to demand for swimming lessons. He said: "As long as the measures that have already been put in place are continued to be implemented it's sustainable." He added that ongoing measures to build back reserves to £160,000 would take two years. Cllr Tink said that residents were finding it hard to pay council tax and that '70% of people don't use the leisure centre'. Cllr Adam Monk said he doesn't use adult social care but he still expects to pay for it for others. Free day at sports centre makes a big splash Families enjoyed a day of FREE swimming, keep fit and play for for one day during half term at Filton Sports and Leisure Centre. Centre staff wanted to showcase all the opportunities on offer for local people. Besides the sporting activities, there were displays by WW (formerly Weight Watchers), Zumba with Julie Hill and the South Glos Active in Life programme. Our local police beat team marked bikes for free as part of the crime prevention strategy and the community garden team was also present. Families were queuing from early and the centre was busy all day. Manager Scott Fessey said: “The open day was a great success with over 500 visitors joining us throughout the day. We really enjoyed the day and have had lots of really nice feedback, we look forward to planning our next one.”

Sophie’s in the running to help tackle eating disorders by Rebecca Day Sophie Mitchell battled with anorexia throughout all her teenage life. In 2016, she was given an ultimatum to make drastic changes otherwise face not reaching her 20th birthday. Now, the 22-year-old from Filton is living a healthy and happy life, and raising thousands of pounds for eating disorder charity Beat. Sophie’s next big challenge is running the Edinburgh Marathon, for which she is aiming to raise £600, and she is calling on Filton folk for their support. As part of her fundraising, she also wants to raise more awareness of the illness, which can be fatal, and hopes to inspire
others that recovery is possible. Sophie's previous fundraising initiatives have included a sponsored head shave, a 15,000ft skydive and a bungee jump. To date, she has raised an astounding £3,597.88 for Beat. Sophie said: “I want to show those who are suffering with eating disorders that recovery isn't as scary as it seems and that you can live a happy, healthy life and achieve the unthinkable. "I want to raise awareness about how powerful an illness anorexia is and the importance of seeking help straight away. I don't want anyone to go through what I did. “Having anorexia affected everything - I used to play lots of sports and had to stop
all of that. It impacted on my GCSEs and I had to drop out of college numerous times. I also celebrated my 16th birthday in hospital. “My self-esteem was rock bottom, my motivation was non-existent and genuinely felt that I didn’t deserve to be happy. But this is just not the case – everyone deserves to be just that.” Anorexia is a serious mental illness, where sufferers - through fear of weight gain - try to keep their weight as low as possible through restricting food or exercising excessively. The disorder can affect anyone, at any age, with sufferers often having a distorted view of their bodies. Sophie explained that she never saw a way out of the eating disorder – she had numerous wake-up calls, including losing a friend to the illness, but she was firmly in its grips. But in 2016, Sophie met personal trainer, Joanna Nowak,

who helped her on the road to recovery. Three years on, Sophie says that Joanna has not only saved her life, but has given her a life she never thought existed. Sophie said: “It’s been a long hard journey but because of

"After a while, those nutrients went into my body, into my mind and it was then I started to really believe for the first time ever that I can beat this. “It was when I went out for a meal after passing my driving test that I realised I was getting better – I challenged myself to eat a number of things off the menu. I was expecting to feel awful about it, but when I got home, I realised that I didn’t have any of those intrusive thoughts that I’d be having for all those years. It was awesome.” Sophie will be running the Edinburgh Marathon on May 26. Tributes paid to ‘oldest Filtonian’
Sidney Chilcott who has died at the age of 99
by Keri Beckingham The son of a man who may have been Filton’s oldest resident has paid tribute to him after he passed away in January. Sidney Victor Chilcott was 99 years old when he died, and he had spent most of his life living in the area. He was born on November 2 1919 in a house at the top of Filton Hill, and shortly afterwards the family of seven (including Sidney’s two sisters and two siblings from his dad’s previous marriage) moved to a terraced house on Station Road, opposite St Peter’s Church. During his younger years his dad worked for a Canadian firm in Corn Street in the city centre, and his mum also helped behind
the bar at The Horseshoe pub as a bar maid. Sidney went to school in the church grounds of St Peter’s Church, before leaving education at the age of 14. At 16, he went to work for Bristol Aeroplane Company (BAC) in Filton as an apprentice machinist, where he stayed for the rest of his career until he retired in the 1980s. As part of his work he had to make parts for aircraft engines from before World War II right up until Concorde, which was a very technical and highly skilled job. As a result of this, when World War II broke out he wasn’t allowed to join the Navy as he was classed as having a reserved occupation, which meant he was exempt from military service.

Sidney and Audrey Chilcott
Sidney met his wife, Audrey Tucker, after the war started and the couple were married in 1941.
Audrey worked as a bookkeeper for several companies in the city including BAC and Bristol City,

and when their only son, Robert, was born in January 1943, the family moved to Charles Road. In the early 1950s Sidney moved to Sunderland temporarily for work when BAC opened a factory there and he was asked to go and train up the new employees. He used to travel there on the train, and came home to visit Audrey and Robert regularly at the weekends. In the late 1990s the couple moved to a small bungalow in Conygre Road due to Audrey’s poor health. Sadly, Audrey died in 2000, and Sidney started to find it difficult to cope at home on his own. Following this and his own deteriorating health, he moved to Begbrook House Care Home in Frenchay in August 2018, where he lived until he passed away. Speaking to Filton Voice about his dad and his life, Robert Chilcott said: “Everyone seemed to like him, and he was an all-round likeable bloke – he was generous, he was funny at times, and he had a very nice personality. He was a good gardener and he liked going to

the pub – his favourite drink was beer and The Horseshoe was the main pub that he visited. He also played skittles for The Plough, supported Bristol Rovers and liked betting on the horses too. “When my mum died he found it more difficult to cope by himself. In the old days the wife did everything in terms of keeping the house together, and when she passed on he really missed her. "He was nearly 99 before he had to go into the home, and was completely independent up until then. “He stayed in Filton all his life, and he saw it grow from not very many houses to the sprawling area it is now. He did have lots of friends in the area, and wherever he went in Filton he always knew someone, even in later life, and it’s amazing really that he outlived everybody.” Sidney’s funeral was held on February 11 at Westerleigh Crematorium. He leaves behind Robert, his younger sister Pat who lives in Ventor Road, three grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

Bogus guttering workers 'forced me to pay 3 times the agreed fee'
How to deal with doorstep traders
A resident of Filton Park says she was forced to hand over £90 for a guttering job after bogus workers 'turned nasty'. The woman, whose address and identity Filtonvoice has agreed to withhold, said she felt threatened and gave them the money to make sure they went away. She said she had been originally approached on her doorstep by the two men - who were wearing shirts bearing the mark of a reputable company, Almondsbury-based Massey Cladding Solutions Ltd - who offered to clear her gutters for £20-£30. They did the work, which took about an hour, but afterwards claimed that £90 had been agreed. When the resident challenged
them, they said 'are you calling us liars?' before becoming threatening. She then agreed to give them the £90 to make them go away. The two men were middle

aged - one was described as 'scruffy' and the other one smarter. They were using a beige estate car with ladders on top. The resident decided not to involve police or trading standards. Massey Cladding Solutions, a large-scale industrial roofing company, said they do not trade on the doorstep and do not do work of this nature. Chairman Ray Massey said: "I can only think that some of our shirts had been thrown away and picked up by these two men. "I will be making our staff mindful of this as it is concerning that this resident has been caused stress. "We don't do this kind of work and we don't seek business on the doorstep."

Tornados' farewell flight over Filton
Filton, steeped in aircraft heritage, said farewell to an icon of the skies during a farewell tour late last month. Three RAF Tornado jets flew over parts of the UK, including the West of England.. The aircraft are being retired after 40 years in service. The tour included places linked to the Tornado and where its engines were developed, including MoD Abbey Wood and Rolls-Royce Filton. Why we had to wait four weeks for bin collection
South Glos Council says it is policy to wait for two more weeks to empty black bins if a collection is cancelled. Filton residents complained last month after heavy snow which meant the Friday collection did not take place. This meant residents had to wait another two weeks to have their black bin collected - a four-week gap since the previous collection. South Glos said it would allow 1-2 extra bags to be collected, deeming this a reasonable estimate of the typical household's refuse. A spokesman said: "If waste and recycling collections have to be cancelled because of severe weather such as snow, our policy is to wait until the next scheduled collection. "This follows past experience which showed that trying to arrange catch up days leads to
further disruption and confusion for residents over a longer period. "We don’t arrange a catch up collection on another day because we have no way to communicate a collection day change at such short notice to over 115,000 households. "A catch up day during the week would push every collection in South Gloucestershire back by a day. Previously, when we have operated a catch up policy

there were extensive issues with bin collections being out of sync with calendars, making residents unsure when the next collection is due. Some residents put their bins out, others don’t, leading to more confusion and missed collections which continues for an extended period of time. It also results in bins and recycling containers being left out on the highway for several days because residents are unsure of when their collection will take place. "We don’t arrange a catch up collection at the weekend for the same reason; we cannot communicate the extra collection to residents at such short notice. "We collect waste and recycling from around 12,000 households a day and we have no way to tell every resident about a catch-up day. On Facebook, residents voiced their views. One said: "We had someone not only dump their 2 black bags of rubbish outside our house, they didn’t even tie them up! "Rubbish went everywhere from the animals and wind. We are all in the same situation so it would be nice if we all showed a little consideration!" Another said: "Can’t understand some people’s attitude when we have adverse weather conditions. I would rather put up with no collection rather than bin men risk injury." But another said: "I can’t understand how a country that has to contend with snow doesn’t have contingency plans!"

Council will remain one member short until elections in May Filton Town Council has defended its decision not to co-opt a new member onto the council for the remainder of this term. A vacancy now exists on the 13-member council after the resignation in January of Rob Taylor (Northville, Lab). Normally, a new member would either be co-opted onto the council or an election would be held. But with elections dues to be held in May, the council decided that there was not enough time to justify the organisation of coopting a new councillor. Holding a by-election would cost the council around £5,000. At a meeting of the full
council, resident and South Glos Council candidate Chris Wood said he was keen to put himself forward to be co-opted. But councillors decided to continue with the current council until the elections, saying that once the process was put in place, a new councillor would only be able to attend one meeting. Mr Wood said: "Surely it is better to have someone working for Northville ward than having the position left blank. This is not about me being co-opted or even doing it right away - it is close to the election but it should have gone to the people." Mr Wood confirmed he intended to stand for the town council in May's elections.

Giant Beluga brings a smile to everyone's face on Filton flypast The much-anticipated UK debut of Airbus’ BelugaXL supertransporter aircraft took place on Valentine’s Day with a flypast over the company’s Filton site before heading to Hawarden Airport near Chester. The XL (extra-large) version of the Beluga plane – so-called for its uncanny resemblance to the adorable marine mammal – even sports a smiling whale’s face livery, voted for by Airbus’ Commercial Aircraft employees. The distinctive aircraft – the first of five that will eventually replace the current fleet of ST (standard) Beluga transporters – made its maiden test flight from Toulouse last July, streamed live at the Farnborough International Airshow. However, this was the first time the BelugaXL has been to the UK as part of its 12-month testing programme. The XL – which like its ST predecessor will transport aircraft parts, including wings made in Broughton, North Wales, across Airbus’ European sites – is due to enter service later this year. Petition call for MoD junction changes A petition has been submitted to South Glos Council calling for changes to the exit of Abbey Wood Retail Park. Supporters say the junction, and the wider road infrastructure around the ring road in Filton, needs to be reconfigured. Local campaigner Chris Wood, who launched the petition, said: "At peak times it can take up to an hour to exit the Abbey Wood Retail Park by car. This petition calls on South Gloucestershire District Council to investigate the problem and identify suitable solutions. One proposed solution is to create an additional exit road from the retail park onto Station Road. "It is unacceptable for residents to be stuck in this car park for up to an hour during peak times. This puts people off visiting and indeed two retailers have closed in the last couple of months."

The Abbey Wood roundabout in general doesn’t work in the rush hour. l Fed up with all the traffic between 4 and 6.30 especially getting out of Asda car park - need traffic lights at Sainsbury's side and open up the crossover junction with Filton Avenue by The George.
Filton councillor Roger Hutchinson said the matter was being looked at by officers but said the proposed solution would not be feasible. He said: "What was said at the Council meeting was that the service road that runs around the site to ASDA could be joined to the Ring Road to relieve the MoD roundabout which I believe is neither practical nor feasible and should not be used to build up the hopes of residents. "We, as sitting councillors have been pressing officers to
find a way to give some relief to traffic leaving at that leg of the roundabout and it is likely that a yellow box will be tried to see if that will resolve some of the problem." A study into the Filton Avenue/Ring Road junction which began in 2015 concluded that opening up Filton Avenue southbound (towards Bristol), while possibly leading to less ttraffic on the MoD roundabout, would lead to large-scale congestion in the Conygre ward part of Filton Avenue.
l I'm sure there is some reason, but why on earth cant traffic cut across Filton Avenue both ways. There is so much traffic build-up because of having to go around the roundabout and back on yourself from the lower part of Filton Avenue. It was possible years ago. l The couple of metres bus line starting by Conygre Grove/Filton Avenue/Station Road junction is completely unnecessary. There are no bus routes going there. Allowing vehicles to go straight to Filton Avenue would massively reduce the traffic in Abbey Wood Roundabout.

n NEWS The team hoping to take over the food kiosk at Elm Park gave away tasty goodies during half term to promote the venture. The kiosk, originally known as The Hatch, ceased trading as Elm Eats late last year just months after caterer Aaron Phillips began trading last spring when The Hatch closed. Youth & community charity FACE Filton wants to open it as a social enterprise, offering training and job opportunities for vulnerable adults with learning or social disabilities. Members of the FACE team dressed up as fruit to promote their plans and raise funds to ensure they have all the proper equipment to make hot drinks and food. Filton Town Council earlier this year voted to allow FACE to run the facility rent free for three months while the enterprise is established. FACE Charity Director Debbie Teml said: " We raised around £350 from two fundraisers and money donated online. We’ve just heard we’ve been granted £850 from Bromford, and had another

Dayley is looking forward to elections The Labour candidate for Stoke Park & Cheswick has spoken to Filton Voice about his plans for the area. Dayley Lawrence is standing as part of the South Gloucestershire elections for district councillors and town and parish councils, which is scheduled to take place on Thursday, May 2. He has lived in Stoke Park for six years and works for the NHS within the catering department at Southmead Hospital. Dayley grew up in the inner city area of Easton and has been involved in local politics, campaigning and working on elections from the age of 10. Four years ago he stood as the Labour Party Candidate for the Stoke Gifford Parish University ward that covers the Stoke Park & Cheswick area, and he is also the chairperson for the local Labour Party branch.
In addition, Dayley was a branch secretary for Unison for six years and says that he helped people at some of the most difficult times of their lives. Speaking of his past achievements and his future plans, Dayley said: “Local residents have told us that they feel the Tory council has let the area down. “From school cuts to empty shops in The Square and fewer police on the streets, austerity has hit our community hard. “One of the big issues that we brought to light at the last local election is the lack of local GP services. This is now even more of an issue. We have the Stoke Gifford Retirement Village and new housing at Scholars Chase, with an ever-growing community that needs basic services like a local GP practice. Local residents are also concerned about antisocial elements like parking,
speeding cars, fly tipping and possible illegal houses of multiple occupancy. “I want to be there for residents. Local politics is about
communities, being involved and involving the people that live in them. Political ventures are often viewed by many as selfish developments, however I want to better the lives and communities that I represent. Working with local groups and fighting for causes is very important to me. “I grew up in a single parent family in the inner city of Bristol, a family that only survived with the support of the benefits system and the strong communities around us. “Equality among residents is very important to me, and I have campaigned for both LGBT and disabled rights. What is the consultation about? A plot of land behind Northville Road, Filton Avenue and Fifth Avenue is held in trust by Filton Town Council for use as a children’s play area. Over recent decades it has not been maintained and is gated due to security issues. Since 2011 several residents have been maintaining the centre of the grass for use as a playing field and made other improvements for nature Site plan showing location of proposed community garden interest. This group is now formally constituted and is seeking formal permission from Filton Town Council to maintain the land on their behalf. This is so that it can be improved for use as a children’s play and nature conservation area. Local schools and youth groups will be engaged. An added benefit will be that increased usage will lessen security concerns, potentially enabling greater public access in the future.

MEP drops in to share her thoughts on Brexit On February 8 Clare Moody, the Labour Party MEP for the South West and Gibraltar, came to Bradley Stoke to support Labour's candidates for May's South Glos Council elections and update everyone on the European Parliament and Brexit. Coming straight after Donald Tusk's comment that all the architects of Brexit who had no plan should have ‘a special place in Hell’, everyone was fascinated to hear what had been going on. It seems that from the EU point of view very little had been happening in Britain because when you view it from their perspective it’s all very odd. After starting Article 50 then months of discussions made little progress until Mrs May got her Chequers deal agreed with at least most of her Cabinet. So by November the EU produced the
585-page withdrawal agreement including the backstop for Northern Ireland that Mrs May requested. Clare says that the MEPs from all countries are saying that this is Britain's greatest political disaster. A country which they had regarded as calm and sensible has just collapsed. Clare noted that rather than start the break up of the EU which the Brexiteers had proudly predicted they had created solidarity. Even the populist parties in France and Italy have stopped trying to leave the euro and certainly won’t leave the EU. However, while in Scotland Clare met ardent Unionists who are changing their mind and might go along with breaking from the UK. Even in Northern Ireland there are conversations

and come out with a policy that is painted in primary colours. Being an MEP has made Clare a great supporter of our membership of the EU and she pointed to everything that the European Parliament has done from roaming charges, secure borders, regional aid and research so she would like the party to be more pro EU. If, in the end, we stayed, Clare would be delighted to represent her country once more. Tony Blake

Students win places on city youth council Orchard School students will serve on the Bristol City Youth Council after winning the votes of their peers across the city. Kajol in Year 8 was successfully elected for her first two-year term as Youth Councillor. Meanwhile Mo in Year 10 was re-elected as Youth Councillor, and on the night was voted Youth Mayor by his fellow councillors. Mo will now serve as one of two mayors (the other Mayor is from Redland Green School) - so a fantastic achievement for North Bristol. In addition, a further Orchard student, Rahma, has been co-opted by her peers onto the council as a representative of Unity Youth Forum - which makes three Orchard students representing the thousands of young people across Bristol. Unity Youth Forum seeks to support the voices of Black, Asian
and Minority Ethnic, Refugee and Asylum Seeking Young People so that they can ensure they are representative of the wider community. Kajol said: “The issues which concern me are littering and education. I want to bring more languages into school so we can learn about more cultures. I want to open up my ideas and share them with the community.”
Mo said: “I wanted to take on the role of youth mayor as I had gained a lot of experience in previous years on the youth council and I want my ideas to be more widespread on a higher platform. “I want to highlight more opportunities for black and Asian minority ethnic young people in the city and more funding for city-wide education
in underprivileged areas. It’s important people my ages have this voice as we are the future.” Rahma said: “It is important I am on the youth council so I can help marginalised groups by discussing controversial topics and helping minorities express themselves. When I found out I was co-opted I didn’t believe it at first!” The Youth Mayors spend time working in close partnership with the City Mayor, acting as advisors to the Mayor, attending meetings and accompanying him to events. The elections for Youth Council were held in 58 polling stations across Bristol, with more than 12,000 votes cast. At Orchard more than 90% of students cast their votes, after finding out about some excellent campaign issues, ranging from the environment to homelessness, and education to mental health.

Sharing stories of Second World War A Second World War Stories exhibition has officially launched, with Filton Library one of the first venues. The South Glos Council-run/ National Lottery-funded project aims to explore the impact of the Second World War in the local area and this exhibition shares residents’ stories about what it was like to grow up, live and work in South Gloucestershire during or in the aftermath of the war. From sweet rations to shelters, air-raids to evacuees, organisers hope it’s a great opportunity to learn more about how local people lived in the war. The exhibition, which opened in Filton at the start of half term, launched at Staple Hill Library in early February and will tour libraries and community venues across South Gloucestershire over the next nine months, and will be accompanied by a series of community events. The

The night Filton got bombed I paced up and down with baby Peter in my arms, praying that my husband was alive. There was no way of knowing until he walked through the door.” A spokesman said: "Alongside the exhibition we are running a number of community events to share the stories we have uncovered and hopefully discover even more. n NEWS IN BRIEF Airbus reassurance over Filton jobs Airbus has moved to reassure its 3,000 Filton workforce after it was announced production of the A380 superjumbo would cease in 2020. Despite popularity with passengers - and having set new standards in luxury flying airlines now prefer lighter, more fuel-efficient passenger jets, meaning that as of 2019, Airbus had sold less than a quarter of the 1,200 A380s it predicted it would sell. The beneficeries are the Airbus A350 and Boeing's 787 Dreamliner. A company spokesman said: "About ten production sites in France, Germany, Spain and the UK will be impacted by this decision, representing around 3,500 Airbus positions equivalent to less than 3% of our global workforce. "We are analysing the situation of each country to come

to local reduction plans. We will start discussions with our social partners in the next few weeks regarding the positions impacted over the next three years. We are confident in the ability of our sites to adjust and in our employees’ efforts to accept suitable internal redeployment solutions. Cash boost for foster carers South Gloucestershire Council’s Cabinet has approved a £300,000 boost to fees and allowances paid to foster carers in Filton and across South Gloucestershire. The Council’s Cabinet agreed the additional support to enhance the foster care service with additional allowances for
foster carers who are able to provide greater stability for children and young people. Specifically, plans have been put in place to allow the council to better support children and young people with more complex needs. A spokesman said: "We want to maximise our ability to recruit and retain foster carers within a highly competitive regional market and with the broader context of a regional and national shortage of carers. "This additional funding will enable South Gloucestershire to match the fees and allowances of competing local authorities."

Reverend Larry Harvey, a leading figure in the traveller community, was born into an English Romany Gypsy family but fell into a life of crime from an early age. He is now full time chaplain at HMP Bristol – where he was once a prisoner – and works closely with offenders to help them build a life without crime. His remarkable life story has been captured in a new book called from ‘Menace to Miracle’ and all proceeds of the sale of the book will be donated to Southmead Hospital Charity to support the neurological department at Southmead Hospital, Bristol. Larry, who lives in Coalpit Heath, had 27 crime convictions ranging from thefts to assault. But in 1999 he turned his life around after his 18-year-old daughter Joanne fell seriously ill needing several ground breaking major neurological operations at the former Frenchay Hospital to relieve pressure on her brain.

Primary wins recognition for its excellent safety standards Filton Hill Primary School has been recognised by The National Safety Certification Scheme for Schools, known as SafetyMARK, as having ‘excellent’ safety standards. The SafetyMARK scheme aims to provide guidance for schools and to recognise and reward those schools that have gone the extra mile to create a safe environment for staff, pupils, visitors and contractors. After a rigorous independent audit the school was able to demonstrate that it has first-class levels of safety management and compliance and, in doing so, achieved the SafetyMARK award for excellence. Justin Smith, of SafetyMARK said: “Filton Hill staff have a really positive attitude with regard to safety for everyone on site and it is clear to see that safety is taken extremely

Hospital is putting an end to ‘PJ paralysis’ A clothing bank has been created for patients who are admitted to hospital without clothes to end ‘PJ paralysis’ and get them out of bed to help their recovery. The bank of new tops, trousers, underwear and socks has been set up thanks to £10,000 funding from Southmead Hospital Charity. Southmead Hospital has been working hard to reduce pyjama paralysis and encourage patients to get dressed, out of bed and moving. Getting patients out of bed and moving each day has been shown to reduce falls, improve recovery and reduce the length of stays by up to one and a half days. For many patients, wearing pyjamas reinforces being sick and can prevent recovery and many patients arrive at hospital without clothing. Luisa Goddard, head of

relatives to bring clothes in for them. The clothing bank will ensure they have day clothes to get out of bed in and will also ensure that when they are discharged they are going home in proper clothing and not their slippers and nightwear.” The clothing bank is for brand
new clothing only (not secondhand due to infection control) and the hospital and charity are working with clothing suppliers to provide stock. Staff across the hospital are able to access the clothing bank to source clothes for their patients.

Road to close in June to create Metrobus route
Roadworks are due to begin on a busy road near Filton in preparation for construction of the Cribbs Patchway metrobus extension (CPME), which is expected to start later this year. The first phase of the work in Gipsy Patch Lane is to divert underground utilities, carried out by BT. Although this phase of work is not expected to cause much disruption, there will be a fourweek closure in June when the bulk of the work will take place. A South Glos council spokesman said: "We do not expect this initial phase of work by BT to cause any disruption to road users or to the supply of BT services, however some foot/ cycle paths may be affected. "We are currently considering options to manage traffic during the construction work and experience gained during a four week closure this June will help us with this.

"We have also launched an online travel survey to better understand travel patterns on Gipsy Patch Lane and we are encouraging anyone who travels or lives along Gipsy Patch Lane to take part. The survey should only take about five minutes to
complete and can be accessed at www.southglos.gov.uk/ GPLsurvey The survey will be open until Wednesday 20 March. Cabinet Member for Transport Cllr Colin Hunt said: “We know this is a busy part of our road network and we
are doing everything we can to reduce any delays.� The Cribbs Patchway metrobus extension (CPME) is an extension of the metrobus network already in operation. The CPME will provide a direct link between Bristol Parkway train station and The Mall bus station, via the Cribbs Patchway New Neighbourhood on the former Filton Airfield. Working with Network Rail, the scheme will include replacing the railway bridge over Gipsy Patch Lane with a wider bridge to enable both a general traffic and a bus lane in each direction as well as a shared use cycle and pedestrian pathway. The scheme will also include footway widening and new bus lanes along other sections of Gipsy Patch Lane. An update from Jack Lopresti, MP for Filton and Bradley Stoke
Helping children with mental health Our children and young people are growing up in a world fundamentally different to the one in which we were born. As ‘digital natives’ the overwhelming majority have and use smartphones on a regular basis, with all that that entails. One study from last year even showed that a quarter of children under six had smartphones, something which has profound implications for how they will grow up and the challenges that they will face, as well as the opportunities that such amazing technologies will bring them. To mark Children and Young People’s Mental Health Week I visited Downend School. They were holding a Wellbeing Day, where children wore nonuniform and were excused from classes to take part in activities that helped them work on their mental health.
I watched a fascinating workshop in the main school hall where children were arbitrarily separated into ‘East Side’ and ‘West Side’, based on where they were sat, in order to demonstrate how easily division can be fostered between groups of people. It was interesting to see the wide-eyed looks when children
realised what had happened and how the simple recognition of the process allowed them to see past superficial divides. I wonder if some colleagues of mine in the House of Commons would benefit from taking part in the future! Place2B’s research shows that 56% of children and young people worry “all the time” about
at least one issue, whether it is at school, or at home, or otherwise about themselves. Whilst this is alarming, there are things that can be done about it to help the children and young people in your life cope. Talk to them about what you do to keep healthy, sharing your tips. Good examples of simple things that make a big difference are taking breaks from technology, going for walks and getting more exercise generally, and making sure you consistently get a good night’s sleep. This is an issue very close to my heart, as I’m sure it is for all of us, and I am very grateful for the opportunity to have visited such an excellent school and to have been inspired by their commitment to helping their students become healthy, as well as educated, adults.

The DIY group, which aims to tackle loneliness and isolation among men aged over 50, operates from the Scout hut in Nuffield Grove, providing a space to socialise, build, share skills and drink tea.
