Pizza chain set to open in Filton

A Domino’s Pizza is set to open in Filton this summer, bringing with it 20 new jobs.

The delivery chain announced that it will be coming to the area on its ‘Domino’s Pizza Bristol’ Facebook page.

A planning application has been approved by South Glos Council’s website for ‘Third State Pizza’ to develop the former Motaman store in Gloucester Road North.

Abbey Everett, a spokesperson for the takeaway company, said: “Domino’s is really excited to have found such good premises right in the heart of Filton community. We hope to open our doors in the Summer, with 20 new jobs available.”

Editorial comment Save Filton Library Filton is at risk of losing its library service.

This is not scaremongering or exaggeration. South Glos Council is making savings and the library service is in the firing line with the possibility that Filton Library could close altogether.

The proposals have been met with anger and shock by local people, head teachers and politicians from all parties.

Today, Filtonvoice is launching a campaign to ensure Filton Library remains as the vital community service it is.

There is vocal support but this support needs to be heard. Consultations are sometimes rightly viewed with scepticism by the public but there is a real opportunity here for Filton people to show their feeling.

In our centre pages, we have printed the consultation document.

You can post it to South Glos but we have also arranged locations across Filton where you can drop them off. Our primary schools will take them. The FACE youth and community building at Elm Park will take them, the council offices will take them and series of volunteers and councillors will take them.

See list on Page 3, opposite.

Only with a vocal community will there be any chance of reversing this.

Please do not let this opportunity go. Pull out the form from the centre pages of this magazine, fill it in and return it. We must not lose our library in Filton.

The consultation is based on proposals that would allow the service to reduce funding by £650,000 a year, however it is important to note that no decisions have yet been made on how these savings could be delivered.

There are a range of options and proposals described in the consultation. It is anticipated however, that by working with the user groups, town and parish councils and other community groups, alternative arrangements may be possible, which mean some of the proposed changes, to opening hours for example, will not be necessary.

Officers have outlined how savings could be made, with three options on the table: 1. If opening hours were reduced by 19% (90 hours) in the realm of the target of £500k could be achieved.

2. Satellite libraries (inc Filton) would be staffed and operated by the Council for two days (18 hours) per week.

Local groups and volunteers would be given the opportunity to fund additional hours, or to operate elements of the library service. The satellite libraries would remain closed (outside the times funded by the Council) if local groups and volunteers did not come forward to extend opening hours or help support the delivery of services during core hours.

3. Close all libraries except identified main libraries. This option would enable the Council to maintain the current level of provision at 5 main libraries taking into account geographic spread of main population centre libraries and future growth.

These are currently proposed as Kingswood, Yate, Patchway, Thornbury and Bradley Stoke.

It would deliver savings in the realms of £1m.

The current consultation on libraries runs for 12 weeks, until 13 May.

In our words ... why Filton Library must remain open

Filton councillor Jo Ward When I decided to stand to be a Town Councillor it was because I wanted to do everything I could to protect the facilities in Filton.

The library plays a key role in our community and there is no justification for reducing opening hours or threatening closure.

South Gloucestershire’s own figures show that Filton is one of the cheapest libraries to run and that efficiency savings have already been made.

“People want a local library and I am concerned that the idea of hubs at Patchway and Bradley Stoke mean that Filton residents will lose out. For some people travelling to Patchway or Bradley Stoke to use a library is not a realistic option.

residents. 42% of the books issued last year were to children and activities like Rhyme Time and Chatterbooks really help to instil a love of reading in children of all ages. Filton library plays a vital role in supporting parents and teachers to help children in their learning.

“As well as being used by children and their parents / carers we know that the library is also well used by adults, particularly those who go in to use the computers. For many people the library computers may be their only way of accessing the internet. Filton Library IT usage far exceeds the South Gloucestershire average and, as more services move online, it seems short sighted to limit or remove this essential resource from our community.

Filton’s South Glos councillors Ian Scott, Roger Hutchinson and Adam Monk Labour councillors are appalled by Conservative proposals to reduce many of South Gloucestershire’s libraries to ‘satellites’ open just two days a week including Filton Library.

“In response to the Conservative proposals, Labour proposed to divert the annual £230,000 spend on the Tories’ £6 a year green bin reduction to protect libraries instead but this was voted down by Tory councillors. Filton Labour Party is taking a lead in opposing the reduction in hours at Filton.

Joanne Ward led Labour’s town councillors in persuading Filton Town Council to oppose any reduction of hours at the council meeting in February.

Our young people are always inspired and engaged by the summer reading challenge, with library staff regularly attending school assemblies to support reading initiatives in our school.

The library enriches our teaching of reading and fosters a love of books in our young people.

MP Jack says priorities are wrong with savings Filton’s MP Jack Lopresti has joined the fight to prevent reductions to library services across South Gloucestershire.

Mr Lopresti told Filtonvoice that the council has got its priorities wrong in terms of where savings should be made.

He said: “I am very disappointed that South Gloucestershire Council are planning a drastic and highly damaging cut to our library services. Local taxpayers are paying more for the Chief Executive, who earns £155,724 a year, than they do for the Prime Minister. Three other officials at South Gloucestershire Council also earn well over £100,000 a year. This is not the best use of taxpayers money. I urge the council to ensure that back office efficiencies are made in preference to reducing front line services.

Picture special - Keep It Safe Day in Filton

Residents enjoyed a day of top tips on keeping safe and secure, run by Filton Working Together and the team from Southern Brooks Community Partnership, helped by the police, fire service and other organisations and agencies.

It was held at Filton Community Centre and featured advice on anti-social behaviour, shed security, cyber safety, scams and much more, along with dog chipping, marital art displays and bike barking.

to cleverly (and believably) solve each problem thrown at him before the story starts to switch to NASA’s discovery of Watney’s survival and their desperate race to rescue him before time runs out.

In what seems to be a well-researched story, Weir explains the science without it being burdensome or reducing the tension of Watney’s fight to survive.

Weir also weaves in Watney’s personality to bring a

good dose of humour without detracting from the story.

This novel has already been translated to the big screen by director Ridley Scott, however the book contains much more tension and plot twists that will keep you engaged to the end.

This is a fast paced story which will appeal to fans of both thrillers and sci-fi.

Back in 2013, Filton residents packed into a meeting of South Glos Council at which they persuaded councillors not to sell the building off for possible demolition.

At the time councillors voted unanimously to sell the landmark house to counselling organisation Network Counselling for £250,000 - the lower of two bids on the table.

Councillors were told that the building should remain a community asset.

Mr Briffett said then it was a victory for democracy.

Pupils from Wallscourt Farm Academy in Cheswick Village got into character for World Book Day. The annual event sees schools across the country promoting the value of books and reading, and pupils are given tokens which enable them to get selected books for free or £1 off full price books, thanks to a partnership between National Book Tokens and several book publishers and booksellers.

Conygre House, one of the last reminders of historic Filton, could be converted into flats - but the exterior of the 17th Century building will be preserved.

The building, at the bottom of Conygre Road near the junction with Filton Avenue, is a 400-year-old former farmhouse and has been the subject of considerable debate for several years.

Owners South Glos Council decided to sell the building in 2005 and there were hopes in 2013 that a counselling organisation would take it over.

That deal fell through, leaving the building and gardens with an uncertain future but now developers Bristol Property Partnership have revealed plans to convert the building into eight flats, a mix of one and two bedroom, with parking spaces.

Ashley Rigg, from the company, told Filton Town Council that the exterior, which groups like Friends of Conygre House feared would be lost if the building were bulldozed, would remain with modern flats built.

He said: “We want to restore Conygre House to its former glory. There will be eight flats built to very high specifications.”

He said that it was possible the company could make future applications for the grounds.

Councillors said they supported the developer but Cllr Anne Kenyon asked Mr Rigg to ensure the historic intergrity of the building was preserved.

Councillor Keith Briffett, pictured, chair of Friends of Conygre House, said: “The house will be saved and 10 years of us trying to save the building have come true.”

The plans will now be subject to usual scrutiny and will need to be approved by South Glos Council planners.

Filton MP backs programme to encourage apprenticeships

Filton’s MP Jack Lopresti is backing apprenticeships in his constituency and has joined a campaign to spread awareness of the opportunities that apprenticeships offer to both young people and businesses.

Mr Lopresti, right, is one of 100 MPs who have joined the fight, pledging to champion apprenticeships in their local area – and ensure that their constituents benefit from the increasing number of quality apprenticeships on offer as the Government heads toward its target of three million apprenticeship starts by 2020.

The campaign - the Parliamentary 100 in 100, led by Nadhim Zahawi MP as the Prime Minister’s Adviser on Apprentices – will see an announcement by an MP every day for 100 days. These

announcements can include pledges from local businesses, charities or schools to take on apprentices for the first time, or to grow their existing apprenticeship programmes.

Mr Lopresti said: “I absolutely believe that

apprentices and setting out the significant benefits of doing so. If you are reading this and want to find out more. ” Mr Zahawi said: “I am delighted that Jack is backing apprenticeships in Filton and Bradley Stoke.

“We delivered more than 2.3million apprenticeships starts during the last Parliament, which is a record to be proud of.

2For every single one of those apprenticeship starts, there was a person gaining new skills, and hands on experience, giving them a brighter future.

“This is why it is so important to ensure that Filton and Bradley Stoke is a key part of the drive toward the three million, ensuring that even more opportunities are created, and I am delighted that Jack will be doing just that.”

Filton voters urged to ‘#RegAFriend’

Filton Golf Club has raised £10,100 for the Jessie May Trust after a year of fundraising events

Golf club ‘takes children’s charity to their hearts’ Filton Golf Club has donated more than £10,000 to local charity Jessie May after a year of fundraising activities.

Led by 2015 men’s captain Bill Gray and 2015 vice captain Tim Parsons, the club has raised funds and awareness through activities including Captain’s Days, music nights, auctions, raffles and forfeits for balls stuck in the bunker.

The money raised, which came to £10,100, will help the charity’s work supporting children with terminal illnesses in South Gloucestershire, Bristol, Bath, Wiltshire and North Somerset. Bill said: “I picked Jessie May because of the

support it offers the whole family and because it is a local charity.

I was particularly drawn to the fact that Jessie May continues to support the family long after the loss of the child.”

Tim added: “I didn’t know about Jessie May before this year. When Bill told me the charity he had chosen I knew I had to help and ‘turbo charge’ all his fundraising efforts and we had some incredible charity evenings in the club house. It’s been a wonderful year – it wasn’t a chore, it’s been a lot of fun.”

Jessie May provides a hospice at home service for terminally ill children. It costs around £1 million for the charity to provide

this care yearly and Jessie May is almost entirely dependent on public support.

Jessie May community fundraiser Helen Mackie said: “Getting to know the Filton Golf Club captains has been an absolute joy and they have truly taken Jessie May to their hearts.

“The support we provide makes all the difference to both the child and their family.”

Filton residents are being urged to get behind a drive to encourage young people to register to vote.

The national #RegAFriend campaign is being run by the Electoral Commission in partnership with the National Union of Students (NUS).

Young people are being asked to encourage their friends to register to vote by sharing photos of their “voter cross” and using the hashtag #RegAFriend.

John McCormack, head of legal, governance and democratic services at South Gloucestershire Council, said: “Voting is an important democratic right that gives you a chance to have your say, as long as you have registered. This includes South Gloucestershire’s young people.

“If you have registered to vote, please show your support and share the message with your friends and family, so they can make their mark on polling day.”

Young people are often one of the lowest represented groups on the electoral register, with only 76 per cent of 18 to 19-year-olds and 70 per cent of 20 to 24-year-olds registered to vote nationally. This compares to 95 per cent of those aged 65 and above.

The #RegAFriend campaign will run until March 18.

The next opportunity to vote will be in May when the Avon and Somerset Police and Crime Commissioner election is held, followed by the EU referendum in June.

We lost our bus service three years ago, a lot of houses have been turned into “lets” with the consequent neglect of front gardens and now it is proposed to close the library which is used for many purposes.

Recycling is not for the council’s benefit Ref ‘Letters’ in the February

Surely we’re not recycling for the council! It’s not for the council’s benefit? I’m not trying to reduce my energy consumption for the sake of my energy supplier, or my water consumption for the benefit of Wessex Water. We live in a use-once, disposable, garbagegeneration society. Plastic is one of the worst offenders. Fifty percent of the plastic we use, we use just once and throw away.

I’d happily rather pay council tax for recycling services than pay it to have all this stuff buried out of sight out of mind in the ground. Even if it was a little more expensive than burying it, its the right thing to do. Thank goodness for the EU Waste Framework Directive I say, let’s have more compulsion to do the right thing.

Generous Jess has locks chopped to ‘bring some joy’ to sick children

by Rebecca Day A local schoolgirl has donated nine inches of her golden locks to children who have lost theirs.

It is the second time that Jess Murphysmith, eight, has offered her hair to the Little Princess Trust charity, which provides wigs to children undergoing cancer treatment.

Jess, a pupil at Filton Hill Primary School, now sports a cropped pixie hairstyle – cut at Perfected salon in Gloucester Road North – and says that she is delighted with it.

Mum Chrystal said: “Jess decided that rather than chop her hair off and it go to waste, she would donate it to the Little Princess Trust.

“We’re so proud of her for thinking of children who are having a terrible time and trying

to find a way to bring a bit of joy to their lives.”

She added: “Jess has always wanted a pixie cut since she was five. The first time she donated her hair, aged six, we compromised, and she ended up with a bob. This time, we've let her have the hair she wanted.”

Jess has donated four plaits worth of her thick hair to the trust. It will now be sent to China, where it will be made into a wig.

Chrystal is now calling on others with long hair to consider donating their locks to charity next time they have it cut. Hair needs to be at least seven inches long and a natural colour.

Chrystal said: “I would like to thank the ladies at Perfected who did an amazing job and I also want to raise awareness of the charity.

“So many people get drastic cuts but most people don't realise they can donate their hair to a worthy cause.”

Bikers hit the road in aid of air ambulance Hundreds of bikers will be riding out in support of the Filton-based Great Western Air Ambulance Charity this summer.

The GWAAC Ride 4 Life is taking place on July 10, when bikers will set off from Dick Lovett at Cribbs Causeway to follow an eight-mile route that takes in the Clifton Suspension Bridge before finishing at Ashton Gate Stadium.

The stadium will be hosting a festival featuring trade stands, food and entertainment.

Head of fundraising and marketing Emma Carter said:

“This is the first GWAAC Ride 4 Life, and we are all very excited about it. It is a great opportunity to join hundreds of other bike enthusiasts on a fun, organised route through this beautiful city. I hope as many people as possible get behind this event, and help us to fund this lifesaving service.”

In 2015 the GWAAC critical care team were called to 67 incidents involving motorcyclists with life-threatening injuries.

Students help to make woodlands better for wildlife and for walkers Work has been taking place in two popular woodland areas near Cheswick Village.

UWE GreenSpace students have held special workdays at Sims Hill and Splatts Abbey Wood, both near Cheswick and the MoD. Sims Hill Community Woodland Group has begun work on the footpath through the wood.

Josh Roberts, chair of Sims Hill Community Woodland, said: “Over the next few months we’ll be felling some trees along the route and using machines to create a surfaced path.

“The public right of way will remain open. Please respect warning signs and instructions from the contractors.

“This is all about making

Sims Hill even better for wildlife and people. The surfaced path will make it easier and more attractive for walkers and help us look after the wood properly.

The tree felling will allow more light to reach the woodland floor – good for flowers and wildlife and keeping the path dry.

“There will be some disruption and the new path may look messy at first. Please bear with us. It won’t take long. In a few months it will blend in and be a part of the wood.”

The DIY group, which aims to tackle loneliness and isolation among men aged over 50, operates from the Scout hut in Nuffield Grove, providing a space to socialise, build, share skills and drink tea.

It was set up over six months ago by locals Mike Lewis and Steve Rylatt and has proved popular within the Filton community, attracting around a dozen men each week.

They work with reclaimed timber, and build a variety of indoor and outdoor furniture.

However, men are welcome to just attend and enjoy a cuppa.

Group member Darryl Collins said: “It's proved really popular with local men, so we’ve extended the hours of our weekly meeting. It’s aimed at men over 50 who want somewhere to socialise, while banging a few nails.”

Everything is supplied by the initiative – with support from Southern Brooks Community Partnership, and Merlin and Knightstone housing associations – including tools, materials and work benches. Men are required to bring sensible footwear and £1 for unlimited tea, coffee and biscuits.

Cuts mean families in Filton and across South Gloucestershire could lose a vital support service, say leaders at Southern Brooks Community Partnership.

The charity, which works across the district, particularly in Filton, Patchway, Yate and rural areas, fears funding from South Gloucestershire Council will be axed following consultation this month. It estimates that for every £1 the council spends, the charity’s team of support workers saves the authority’s services £18 as they work with families to improve parenting skills, finances and wellbeing.

In one current case, a support worker has been helping a family who had been trying to access support for nine years, by gaining the trust of a teenager who was refusing to attend school or leave the house because of severe anxiety. Kath, his carer, said: “I can’t thank Southern Brooks enough for what they

have done for our family. They offer a unique service and without it Sam would still be shutting himself in his room.

The persistence of his worker has meant that he is now on the road to recovery and is even taking driving lessons. But he is not there yet, and still needs more support, so I am worried about what the closure of the service will mean for him and for all the other families they support.”

Over the past year, the charity has worked with more than 70 families and has another 40 on the waiting list. Of those they have supported, 86 per cent of parents say they feel better able to meet their children’s needs and 89 per cent say they have better parenting skills.

Louis begins a busy year with a silver medal win It’s been a great start to the year for Louis Price, an 11-year-old table tennis player from Filton who competes among some of the best young players around the world.

Having just signed a two-year sponsorship deal with Swedish manufacturer Stiga, Louis competed in the National Cup 2016, organised by Table Tennis England, in February, in which the top eight players by ranking competed in the under-12 age category.

Louis ended the two-day event with a silver medal, finishing with just one defeat over the whole weekend.

Daniel Ives, Louis’ coach, said: “His progress has been fantastic, with some stunning results in both junior as well as

Louis will shortly be travelling to Sweden for the Safir International Tournament, another World Junior Circuit event taking place in Orebro.

This year’s event will feature 32 different nationalities, making it one of the largest International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) events around.

Louis will be competing in the U13, U14 and U15 age groups for England.

Hitting £100,000 target is icing on the cake for Knutty Knitters

The Knutty Knitters, who hit the headlines with their lifesized knitted nativity scene, have reached their £100,000 fundraising target and celebrated with a giant cake – knitted, of course.

The six women all met at St Teresa’s Catholic Primary School, in Monks Park, where they began knitting together in their spare time.

The death of founding member Christine Walsh in 2011, and the care she received at St Peter’s Hospice after her diagnosis of bowel cancer, inspired the group to start fundraising for the charity, taking their “Knitivity” scene on tour around the Bristol area for the past few years.

The knitters are made up of Alison, Jean Richards, Anne Iles, Eileen Agnew, Pat Dardis and Julia Worth.

St Peter’s Hospice CEO Simon Caraffi said: “The people of Bristol, and further afield, really took the Knitivity to their hearts and thanks to the hard work of the marvellous knitting ladies they have now raised £100,000 for St Peter’s Hospice.

“Their creativity resulted in our best-selling Christmas card ever and hugely popular road trips showing the Knitivity at various venues to raise funds, not to mention their starring appearance on The One Show.

Project comes naturally to school Wallscourt Farm Academy will be truly living up to its name this spring following the completion of a community art project.

Project Grow has enabled the school, which opened in 2013, to develop its outdoor area with multi-functional learning spaces for children, families and the wider community.

Francis Thorburn, the artist leading the project, has worked with children, staff, parents and other partners to create hexagonal growing and planting areas in the school allotment, a honeybee hive, a firepit, and a series of hexagonal outdoor seating areas.

The children, aged four to seven, have planted seeds which will go into the raised beds as soon as the frosts are over and they are looking forward to building their farm.

They will be visiting a real farm to learn about growing and

about rearing livestock.

Wallscourt Farm Academy worked with Incredible Edible Bristol, naturalist Steve England and nature photographer Iain Green on the project as

part of its involvement in the LINE (learning in the natural environment) network.

The project enabled the school to make links with the community, bringing in groups

and organisations including UWE Bristol, Splatts Abbeywood and Beaufort Grange care home.

A Project Grow celebration day brought together families with those who have been involved. It included storytelling with Martin Maudsley and multiinstrumental musician, Fiona Barrow, bee and wax workshops from Jeff Davey, open fire and pencil making workshops with Steve England, and a live performance from Francis Thorburn.

Principal Susie Weaver said: “We are delighted that Project Grow has been such a successful learning experience for our children, families and the wider community, and that the project will have a lasting legacy and will help us ensure that outdoor learning continues to be a tool for building and growing community.”

College dancers raise cash for Jessie May Trust

South Glos and Stroud College

HND students from SGS College have raised an amazing £625 for charity the Jessie May Trust by putting on a dance showcase.

The event took place back in January at The Loft Theatre on WISE Campus and was organised by students Rebecca Miles and Natalie Mogg.

The duo were given the task to create a community dance showcase, inviting local dance groups to perform alongside SGS Dance students, as part of their course.

When organising the showcase and thinking about promoting the event, the learners decided to donate all the proceeds to charity. The one they chose was a local Bristol charity called the Jessie May Trust which supports families with children who are suffering from terminal or life-threatening illness.

The showcase ‘South West Dance Explosion’ incorporated an eclectic mix of dance styles and was a great success after completely selling out.

Natalie said: “The stage was colourfully lit with a mixture of music from all genres to fit the range of styles of artistry. There was a good mixture of ages and ability throughout both performances which was refreshing to see.”

Rebecca added: “South West Dance Explosion was a huge success and we raised a large amount of money for the Jessie May Trust.

Ticket sales alone raised £500 and with the added amount from the collection boxes we helped raise an amazing £625 for a great cause.”

Orchard School Bristol Orchard School Bristol hosted its second employability day last month for Year 10 students.

The day was led by Young Enterprise and supported with 16 business volunteers from commercial property consultancy Lambert Smith Hampton.

The students experienced an employability masterclass and learnt more about surveying and the world of work.

From this, they formed groups and were challenged to create their own businesses including marketing, advertising, financial plans and organising events for it.

At the event of the day each group pitched for 60 seconds as to why their business was the best.

What should we teach our kids?

That was the question posed by Robert Peston in a recent programme on BBC Radio 4. The programme looked at how the world of work, driven by fast-changing technology, is changing and how our education system needs to adapt.

Our school was delighted to be invited to be part of the programme, with the Radio 4 team visiting our premises here in Stoke Gifford, interviewing students and staff and watching cutting-edge technology in action, including our 3D printer and CNC milling machines.

So to return to the original question: what should we teach our kids?

I believe the approach we have adopted here at BTE Academy – and our fellow university technical colleges (UTCs) elsewhere in the country – is the way forward.

While we do not neglect the other core curriculum subjects, UTCs have a strong focus on the so-called STEM subjects – science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

These are the disciplines which are more than ever in demand from employers, and which will increasingly come to shape the UK’s knowledgedriven, technology-based economy in the years to come.

We provide technical and practical learning for our

students, in partnership with the likes of Airbus and RollsRoyce and the University of the West England. It is well known that the UK has a dire shortage of engineers and scientists, and we are playing our part in helping to plug the skills gap and enabling this country to compete globally in the future.

Many of our students go on to university or further training, but just as many pursue apprenticeships or go directly into industry.

Employers welcome UTCs as an opportunity to support a supply of talented young people who have the technical skills they need and – unlike too many young people leaving “traditional” education – they are experienced in problem solving, project management and team skills.

In recent months our Year 10 and 11 students have taken part in aviation workshops with Rolls-Royce and wind turbine and robotics projects with UWE. They have designed, tested and evaluated a rocket-powered car as part of Bristol’s Bloodhound world land speed record attempt and participated in a Royal Navy Challenge Project, which involved designing and building the solution to a natural disaster challenge.

This approach is about teaching students technical and scientific subjects in a new way and educating the inventors, engineers, scientists and technicians of tomorrow.

I believe that alongside traditional learning, providing the type of experiences mentioned above is the best way to equip our young people for the future.

The UK needs advanced technical skills at all levels if we are to prosper in the 21st century. Whether in manufacturing, wind farms, rail links or high-tech hospitals we need a workforce that can develop new products, stretch and reuse existing resources, and meet the challenges of the future.

Pupils with some of the Easter eggs they have donated to a charity

Charborough Road Primary School

Kindness Week Pupils from Charborough Road Primary School celebrated Kindness Week with a variety of activities and learning spread across all year groups between February 14 and 20.

Children took part in whole-school assemblies and small groups focusing on different acts of kindness: holding a door open; giving a smile; offering help; and how to offer a compliment to someone.

Pupils enjoyed an activity where they thought about a compliment to write on a Post-it note to someone else in the class chosen at random and used plenty of adjectives to describe their compliment.

From a learning perspective, pupils are developing their writing skills, language and kindness all at the same time –it’s a win-win! Similar good deeds from other classes included some really helpful tidying, and other jobs around the classroom, including sorting counters into pots, ordering number cards and sorting magnetic letters and sharpened pencils.

At the end of the week pupils decided to complete a random act of kindness outside the school community and settled upon the donation of 30 Easter eggs to the “StreetLifeSarnies” group, who collect and distribute gifts to homeless people to show that people care.

Head teacher Nicola Bailey said: “Our role in providing outstanding teaching and learning is equally as vital as that of nurturing those in our care to be happy and caring individuals. We are enormously proud of how the children have involved themselves wholeheartedly in this initiative!”

Shield Road Primary School

Science mornings at UWE Pupils from Shield Road Primary School have been enjoying science mornings at the University of the West of England education department. The school said it was a fantastic opportunity for the children to experience a wide range of science activities with lots of adult support and interaction – and was also great fun, according to the pupils. Liam from Year 2 said: “That was the best day ever!”

INDEPENDENT SCHOOL FOR BOYS 7–18 FOUNDED 1590

Holocaust Memorial Day On Holocaust Memorial Day , the school held assemblies for all year groups to help students to understand the enormity of The Holocaust.

The theme this year was to inform people about those who did not stand by. Those who stepped up to help people who were at risk during The Holocaust, Bosnia, Darfur, Rwanda and during many other genocides which have occurred and still occur around the world.

Students, especially in KS3, were asked to research those people who ‘Did Not Stand By’. They created posters and poems to help people to understand, that what happened should never happen again.

Young Apprentice Term 3 saw the sale of the products made by the Year 7 Young Apprentice boys’ group. They had spent terms 1 and 2 sourcing and costing and finally making products to sell in school.

The sale took place at the end of term 3 and nearly all items were sold.

The result was that £36 was raised and donated to the RSPCA, a charity chosen by the winning team. The team efforts as the competition hotted up was to be commended. They learnt a good lesson that it is quality not quantity that wins the day.

St Teresa’s Primary

Year 2 and Year 6 tree planting On Tuesday morning the Tree Bristol people came to enable Year 2 and Year 6 pupils to plant a new generation of trees as part of the city’s ‘One Tree per Child’ initiative. This began by Year 6 planting a rare whitebean tree (Sorbus Bristoliensno) unique to Bristol. The children enjoyed their outdoor experience with tree planting staff and local volunteers.

Year 3 Mojo Year 3 had an exciting, adventurous time at the Mojo Active Centre.

They climbed ‘Mount Everest’ (high climbing wall). Lots of the children reached the top.

The children gained experience in map reading and loved getting very muddy!

They also had to work together using their skills to solve a dirty water problem in a well.

Charity shop thanks community for support in year since launch

A Bristol charity shop has celebrated a successful first year of trading after receiving impressive support from the local community.

Barnardo’s has welcomed almost 5,000 bags of donations since opening in Gloucester Road North, Filton, last February.

The charity has also received 1,300 hours of support from local volunteers.

Barnardo’s area business manager Rob Scott said: “We are very grateful to the people of Filton who have been so very generous with their donations.

“Aside from the usual clothes and books we’ve also received some unusual gifts, including a vintage bottle of Scotch whisky!

“However, we couldn’t function without the dedication and commitment of our loyal volunteers who help with sorting the stock, steaming the clothes, arranging displays and serving the customers.

“Thanks to their amazing contribution, we are helping to raise much-needed funds to support the charity’s work with vulnerable and disadvantaged children across the UK.”

The Filton shop is open Monday-Saturday from 9am5.30pm and on Sundays from 10am-4pm.

Mental health views

A housing provider is inviting its residents in Filton to take part in a conference on mental health.

Merlin Housing Society is hosting the event for customers on March 22, from 10am-1pm at Chipping Sodbury Town Hall.

The conference is open to all Merlin residents and aims to reduce the stigma around mental health issues and gather views on how the organisation’s services could be improved. Students get their careers off to flying start Eleven air industry students from South Gloucestershire and Stroud College are celebrating this week after gaining employment within the sector.

The youngsters have secured jobs with travel giants such as Thomas Cook, British Airways and Swissport.

Charlie Moore, 19, from Chepstow, will be joining British Airways as a member of cabin crew in April and she says she is excited to be starting work.

She said: “I wanted a job where I can travel and earn money at the same time so this is the best place do it.

“I loved the interview process, it was challenging and fun. I wasn’t nervous at all as the course helped me to prepare for it. I would really recommend it.”

Nineteen-year-old Toby

Charlie Moore and Toby Gould Gould from Exeter is about to start a job as a passenger service agent at Exeter Airport and he said: “I feel really confident to be leaving college with a good job behind me.”

Yvonne Wood, the students’ tutor, added: “The course aims to get students employer- and industry-ready. This is a great achievement for them, they have all worked very hard and I’m confident they will have long and successful careers within the industry.”
