Editor’s note

Shield Road Primary School in Filton ran a number of reading activities alongside World Book Day. These included bedtime stories after school with children wearing pyjamas, decorating the classroom doors as book covers, completing literacy work based on an author and dressing as book characters.

News in brief

Street lights

A petition to extend street lighting during the night was presented on behalf of Filton residents to South Gloucestershire full council on February 19. The Labour group put forward the suggestion to extend street lighting until 1am, to accommodate for areas with a “night time economy”, such as Filton and Yate. According to councillor Ian Scott, “there is a significant number of residents still using streets at this time”. Lights in Filton have been switched off since South Gloucestershire implemented plans to cut costs and lower emissions. Engineers say the cost to turn the 600 lights back on would cost Filton £30,000. With roughly 4,000 homes paying council tax, households would pay an £7.50 per year, or 62p per month.

Police station move

Police officers have now moved our of Filton Police Station ahead of the move to new premises on the A38 towards Patchway. Filton Town Council was told officers are currently operating from Filton Police Station. Plans are underway to give

PCSOs a room at the town council offices three days a week for residents to meet local officers. Final details have not yet been confirmed.

Band hits high notes

Filton Concert Brass has won the South West Regional 1st Section contest in Torquay. The band, which was founded originally by Jim Scott, has scored a number of high profile successes in recent years and last weekend’ victory saw them compete with bands from Wiltshire to Cornwall. It is now thought the band could be promoted to the highest level, the Championship Section where they would compete against many of the biggest names in the brass band world.

Gating - an apology

In last month’s Filton Voice, the story about gating of back lanes behind 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th avenues in Filton did not recognise the hard work done by PCSO Sheryl Drewitt and the co-ordinators who worked for six years to secure this. Our apologies to all concerned and we are planning to print a follow-up in our next issue.

Plans for Filton Airfield are moving apace. The issue has been at the forefront of many of our thoughts since it was announced the site was to be sold and now we know that there are plans to create, in effect, a new mini town. It is clear that thousands of new people will mean thousands of new car journeys and our roads, especially at some of the pinch points, cannot cope. Town councillors were given a persuasive view of how this can be managed but there seems little doubt that the only way we can make this remotely workable is if the most effective public transport imaginable is put in place, and this means buses which are affordable and reliable, a Henbury Loop Line and even an Oyster-style card to enable us to hop on and off all the different buses and trains. We’ve had a glimpse of the future ... all we need to do is make it work.

By Rebecca Day Concerns have been raised about a redevelopment programme that is set to demolish a number of homes across Filton. The work is part of Merlin Housing Society’s (MHS) £20 million programme to refurbish 1,000 non-traditional homes across South Gloucestershire and redevelop 450 homes. Rodney Crescent, where 92-year-old Carol Mallett has been living for 60 years, is one of the roads in Filton which is set to have houses demolished. Mrs Mallett said: “All we’ve been given is a date, which is Christmas 2015. We don’t know

what’s going to happen next. Until we’ve been told otherwise, we’re just going to keep our fingers crossed. We’ve just got a cloud hanging over our heads - it feels dreadful.” Over the last three years, Mrs Mallett has had a new kitchen and a walk-in bathroom - all fitted by MHS. She says that there are no problems of damp with the building. She added: “It’s ludicrous that they want to have it all knocked down. We’ve also got very big gardens too - I think they may want the land rather than houses.”

Merlin Housing Society told Filton town councillors that residents in the rebuild programme, who will have to move out of their home for at least six months, will be relocated as close as possible to their current home. Councillor Kieran Hyde said that he was worried the ‘key driver’ for the work was the opportunity to build more homes on large garden plots. Merlin also said that there was advice and possible funding available for residents who lived in a ‘non-traditional’ home but who owned the property themselves. Mrs Mallett says that her 102-year-old neighbour is adamant that she is not going to move. “I don’t see how they’re going to try and make a person move house at that age,” she said. “We have such a community spirit here - and this is the reason we don’t want to move.” MHS owns more than 1,400 non-traditional homes in South Gloucestershire, which were built after the Second World War to meet the demand for the housing. According to the MHS website, many of the houses suffer from problems such as damp and draughts. The housing society says that unless they carry out work, the properties will develop structural problems in years to come. Residents were informed of the redevelopment in 2012, MHS says. The housing group has been sending out quarterly newsletters and holding open events to keep the residents informed. According to MHS, residents will have the option to move back into the house after the redevelopment, and in the meantime, a house will be provided that is suitable for them. MHS spokesperson, Hywel Lloyd, said: “There will be a

housing officer working on the project, and will have meetings to find out residents’ circumstances. “We have a strong process in place, as we understand that moving can be stressful. There might be houses available for them just around the corner.” The work is part of MHS’s promise to residents when it took over South Gloucestershire Council’s housing stock in 2007. The refurbishment programme, which is to begin in April, will involve work to the outside of the homes, and it is expected to take between five to eight weeks. MHS has assured that people will be able to stay in their homes whilst the refurbishment takes place. Mr Lloyd, said: “We aim to carry out the refurbishment as quickly as possible, with little disruption caused. The refurbishment has so far gone very well, and it has been warmly welcomed by residents.”

Store team show they’re good sports Staff from Sainsbury’s in Stoke Gifford will be going the extra mile for Sport Relief this month. Using equipment in the store, the team will be aiming to run, cycle or row 220 miles as colleagues across the South West - from Bristol to Weymouth - do the same to raise £75,000. It will take 5,000 staff across Region 41 three days, from March 21 to 23, to complete the challenge, clocking up 4,180 miles between them. A spokesperson said: “Those may remember at the 2012 Sports Relief on a cycle ride of the region, we unfortunately lost our dear friend and colleague Paul Morgan. This will be the first Sport Relief since his passing and he is held in our thoughts and memories during the event and every day.” There will be collection buckets in store and people can also donate at www.justgiving.com/ Sainsburys-Region-41.

Council tax frozen but Filton bills will still rise

by Rebecca Day Council tax in South Gloucestershire is to be frozen for a fourth consecutive year. However Filton households will receive slightly higher bills after the town council raised its precept by 8.5 per cent ahead of projected losses of £20,000 at the Ratepayers’ Arms. Band D properties in Filton will now be paying £189.38 on top of the unchanged South Gloucestershire council tax of £1,245.20. This represents a rise of £14.90 per year for each household, or £1.49 for each of the ten months when payments are collected by direct debit. A budget of £190.7 million has been set by South Gloucestershire for 2014/15. A further freeze is also planned for 2015/16, followed

by a two per cent increase in 2016/17. The freeze has come after “positive progress” with the council’s savings programme, which will deliver £43 million by 2014/15. The council also aims to deliver an additional £36 million by 2019/20 through the programme. The cost of the freeze will also be partially balanced by a one per cent government grant. The budget was finalised following extensive consultation with residents. Respondents were asked to consider which services the council should prioritise in the coming years, with care for older people identified as the highest-priority. A household council tax bill is made up of numerous “precepting authorities”, including town and parish

councils, police and fire authority, as well as South Gloucestershire Council. Further information on the revenue budget is available online at www.southglos.gov.uk/ budget. Cllr John Calway (Con, Longwell Green), leader of the Conservative group on the politically ‘hung’ council, said: “I’m delighted that the council has agreed to Conservative demands to freeze its part of the council tax bill for the fourth year in a row because this will save the average local household £350 over the four years.” Labour Group Leader Councillor Andy Perkins said: “With the Council adopting many of our budget priorities, we have played a leading role in protecting key services such as libraries and public toilets.”

News - Filton Airfield Vision unveiled for future of airfield site

Owners of Filton Airfield site say new development will bring:

l 9,000 jobs – advanced engineering positions and entry level positions for all ages l Transport improvements – the space, money and business case to overhaul public transport and roads in the area l Celebration of the airfield’s heritage – more access than ever before to the planes and artefacts from Bristol’s aerospace heritage l Community facilities – new schools, health, retail, library and more l New homes – a range of homes to suit first-time buyers through to larger families l Public open space – public places to relax, take part in sport and play areas for children of all ages Massive plans for thousands of homes, 9,000 jobs and a heritage site on Filton Airfield have been revealed by the site’s owners. Representatives of Bridgehouse Capital, who bought the site from BAE in 2012, were invited by Filton Town Council to provide more details on their plans in the same month they ran a series of roadshows open to the public. Describing the regeneration plans as ‘jobs led’, they said the site would be a mix of residential homes, services and schools, with a secondary and two primaries earmarked in addition to a range of employers, including high-tech jobs. The proposed aerospace centre housing Concorde would

be a major feature of the site. There would be a ‘strategic transport corridor’ through the site, opening it up to public transport and close links to Cribbs Causeway and The Mall. Councillors were also told that key transport developments such as a Henbury Loop line were dependent on the jobs and residential potential of the airfield site. The plans allow for a new rail station at the Filton end and a further station nearer the Brentry end. Other key features would be a Turn to Page 8

Continue from Page 7 hotel complex and open space for play, with the school doubling up as a sports centre. Around 2,700 homes would be built on the airfield, to go with more than double that number in surrounding areas. Filton councillor Rikki Teml said there were worries about transport gridlock which was already causing big problems around rush hour. Councillors also said they were concerned that the new development would be built in isolation from the existing communities. There were also fears that a lot of new public transport was being proposed for the site at a time when some parts of Filton had no regular bus service. A spokesman from Bridgehouse Capital said: “We are still getting feedback from local people, but it’s clear that the plans to celebrate heritage on the site in the form of two new museums and integrating

Abbey Wood Retail Park will officially open this month after two more retailers moved in durig February. Major variety retailer B&M opened on February 20 followed by national sandwich franchise Subway on February 28. This phase of new store openings comes after a collection of major chains opened their doors late last year following a major £10 million refurbishment and extension project. The park is now home to Asda, Costa Coffee, Sporting Pro, Frankie & Benny’s, Nando’s, Matalan, Pets at Home, Brantano, Next Clearance and McDonalds. The 16,000 sq ft B&M store is the fourth in Bristol, creating a further 60 jobs for the local area. The store was opened by representatives from St Peter’s Hospice who received a £250 gift card donation on the day to mark the start of a new, ongoing relationship with the Filton store. The new store offers a wide variety of branded and own label products including groceries and toiletries as well as an extensive non-food section including toys, soft furnishings, home and gardening ranges. It will also have a prominent ‘seasonal department’ which will change throughout the year to

bring customers the best offers and latest ranges. Subway will create approximately ten new jobs. This brings the total number of Subway restaurants across Bristol to 24. To celebrate the Grand Opening of Abbey Wood Shopping Park, Subway will be introducing the ‘Real Deal’ meal deal where diners can choose from a range of freshly made 6-inch Subs and a drink for just £3. Chris Robinson, Store Manager at B&M Abbeywood, said: “We’re really proud to be opening another store in Bristol, creating up to 60 jobs and playing our part in the local community.” The redevelopment of the park has included redesigning the car park and common areas to create a public realm and developing buildings to provide new community space and leisure facilities. The redevelopment project will be celebrated at a Grand Opening event at Abbey Wood Shopping Park on Thursday, March 20. The local public can enjoy free samples, tasting, street performance and circus acts from 4pm. Visit the website www. abbeywoodshoppingpark.co.uk

indicator in a huge range of social issues from poverty to mental health. World Book Night is about giving books and encouraging those who have lost the love of reading – or are yet to gain it – to pick up a book and read. Library staff will be giving out free books in the Shield Retail Park on Thursday April 24th between 12pm and 5pm. If you would like to join in with World Book Night you can register now to become a Community book giver. Community book giving gives you an opportunity to share your love of reading by giving books of your own choosing. You can give one book or dozens and you can give them to anyone you want. Please see www.worldbooknight.org.uk for more details of how you can get involved or ask at the library. Do you have Memory Problems but love sport? The Sporting Memories Group meets in the library every Tuesday 11am – 12.30pm. The group is for sports fans with dementia or other memory issues but they are welcome to bring along a carer. Refreshments are provided. To book a free place please call 07553 530307 or email admin@ sportingmemoriesnetwork.com The winner of last month’s Filtonvoice library prize competition is Lydia Harry. The question was: Robert Galbraith wrote The Cuckoo’s Calling. By what name is this author better known? The answer: JK Rowling. Lydia wins a £10 book token plus 10 vouchers for free DVD, Audio book or CD hire

Cash to help keep the water flowing The group tending Filton’s Community Garden have welcomed a grant to put towards improving the area’s water supply. After what seems like months of never-ending rain it might be hard to believe that lack of water could be an issue for gardeners working on the site at Elm Park. But with summer and hopefully drier weather on the way, along with plans for more projects at the garden, the £250 from Wessex Water has been gratefully received and put towards the group’s fund to connect to the mains water supply. Dave Mikkelson, chairman of Filton Community Garden Committee, received the Wessex Watermark award from Natalie Doran, Wessex Water’s Environmental Scientist, last month. He said: “The community garden would not have got past the embryonic stage if it had not been for the dedication and hard

Filton Community Garden Committee receive the £250 Wessex Watermark award work of a number of like-minded people who got together and drove the scheme forward. “We had great support from Filton Town Council and local companies, plus many man hours volunteered by individuals who were determined to make

this a real community asset. The garden is now a regular meeting place and ideal for picnics and local events. We are delighted to have received this support from Wessex Water with our Watermark Award.” Plots at the site have now

been allocated to four local primary schools and the group is planning to plant a number of new shrubs. The Watermark Award, now in its 20th year, provides funds for environmental projects within the Wessex Water area.

St Vallier Under 9s proudly show off their new football kit, sponsored once again by H&P Aerials. This is the third year of an association between the team and the Filtonbased company, and the second kit they have provided. Paul and Kaye Ferris of H&P Aerials are pleased to support the team in which their son, Lewis, has been a regular player since the age of 6. However, Lewis and many of his team mates had started to outgrow the previous kit which they had worn since they were in the Under 7s. The new strip retains the main St Vallier colours of yellow and blue, but the green sleeves of before have now gone.

Inspired after watching a Jackie Chan movie is local Muay Thai instructor, Gary Rowley. He has been teaching Muay Thai for a year, with most of his students being new to the sport. “I started to get serious about martial arts when I was 16 after I moved to Spain,” said Gary, who also works at Filton Sports and Leisure Centre. “One night after watching a Jackie Chan Film - I think it was Rush Hour - I went off into Benalmadena, Malaga, in search of a martial arts instructor.” Muay Thai, which is the national sport of Thailand, translates to the “art of eight limbs”, as boxers not only use punches and kicks, but also knees and elbows. Classes run every Monday from 6.30-8pm at A&A Fitness on Gloucester Road North. Sessions are £6 each with the first lesson free. Beginners are welcome.

keep up the good work this month! It’s February and your New Year health kick is starting to feel a bit too much like hard work. Every year people give up healthy eating and stop exercising at the end of January and before you can blink they’ve regained all the weight and feel just as lethargic and sluggish they did before. Please don’t give up now. Don’t waste a month of effort. February is the time to consolidate, motivate and turn this health kick into a habit. Think about what you’ve been doing and how it’s working for you. If you’ve been eating a healthy, natural diet and cutting out processed foods, how do you feel now? Are you sleeping better, and how do your clothes feel? If you see changes and improvements don’t stop now, keep up the good work! Then there’s that gym membership. You attended regularly for a few weeks but it’s already started to drop off and if you give up now you’ll never achieve the active lifestyle you wanted. To keep your motivation, freshen up your routine – ask one of the gym staff to write you a new programme or suggest new exercises, or you could try out a new class, or exercise outdoors. Run, cycle or walk different routes, distances and speeds to keep your body guessing and adapting. The message is that if it’s working for you don’t stop now. You can do it. Keep up the effort and reap the rewards.

Go on... it’s not as scary as it sounds!!

As we prepare to mark the Centenary of the outbreak of the ‘First World War’ I recalled my first contribution to “Filton Voice” ... Edition No 1. It was October 2011. I wanted readers to share with me a journey I made with my cousin, Norman, to the Battlefields of Passchendale” and “Ypres” and walk ... as my father did ... through that notorious “Menin Gate” from where countless thousands failed to return so many years ago. As a child I was constantly aware of that horrific conflict through the stories my father told me. As a front line soldier he returned badly disabled to continue what remained of the rest of his life. One glimpse of the trenches near “Sanctuary Wood” and the vast expanse of the cemeteries near Arras told it all. How could such a tragedy have resulted from the extremes of so few? As we approach that Centenary I feel we should

extend our heartfelt sympathies and gratifications to all those who sought to repair the enormous damage that onslaught caused to Victors and Vanquished alike. The proliferations of the few must never be allowed to take precedence over majority opinions. The results can be catastrophic as we saw in the First Great War. My visit to “Flanders Fields” told it all to me! Douglas Daniels

Why are we paying again?

In reply to Annamarie Bagley’s recent letter in Filtovoice concerning the waste green bin collection charge I wholeheartedly agree with her remarks. What I would like to know is: Who paid for the bins initial? I suspect it was the ratepayers who paid including delivery. Now we are being told to pay twice. This whole business seems like getting rates paid via the back door. In addition, what

were private roads seem to have been taken over to solve the council’s parking problem. Gerry Farrell

Henbury Loop vital for Filton

Having visited the Bridgehouse Capital exhibition showing plans for the airfield, it is clear to me that this is the long term solution for the site - as long as we get a proper public transport infrastructure and that means rail and the Henbury Loop Line. My fear is that our Filton councillors will look on and nothing will happen until it is too late! Name and address supplied Have your say on Facebook at www.facebook. com/filtonvoice. Festival in Filton will urge all familes to get active

A ‘Get Active’ festival will be held in Filton this Spring as part of a larger lifestyle event being run by one of our local schools. Healthy eathing and healthy lifestyles are the themes of ‘Staying Alive, which was launched this month. The With One Voice Partnership – Orchard School Bristol, Filton Avenue Infant and Junior Schools, Upper Horfield Community School and Fonthill Primary – are preparing for the Staying Alive Festival. It is being organised to highlight to families in north

Bristol the many fantastic lifestyle opportunities in the community with two flagship events - a healthy eating festival at Orchard School on Saturday, May 10th followed by a Get Active Festival at Filton Leisure Centre the following Saturday, in conjunction with Filton Town Council. The schools are also promoting issues around health to improve life expectancy which varies greatly across different parts of the city. A highlight of the food festival will be an attempt to set a World

Record for the most diverse fruit salad with weird and wonderful fruits brought from across the globe. This event will see the communities of Horfield, Southmead, Lockleaze and Filton coming together in a celebration of healthy and tasty eating, including demonstrations and stalls featuring food from round the world, reflecting the cosmopolitan nature of the schools and communities. At the Get Active Festival, families will have the chance to take part in a wide range of

Libraries and UWE lending a hand

By Rebecca Day A Filton town councillor who was elected as a Conservative has joined the Labour party. Cllr Rikki Teml, who left the Conservatives in 2012 and now stands as an Independent, will not represent Labour on the town council however. The Conygre councillor said: “I have not hid my membership of the Labour party. Anyone who has asked I have told and been honest. “I was always a Labour voter until 2009. I grew up with all my family voting Labour and supporting them at elections. “I am staying as an Independent councillor until my term ends in 2015 as it would not be right to represent a party I was not a member of when elected. “I will represent the public

South Gloucestershire libraries - including Filton - and the University of the West of England (UWE Bristol) have teamed up to make it even easier for the public and students to access library services. Under the new partnership, library users aged 16 and over can use their library Active Card at four of UWE Bristol’s campus libraries (Bower Ashton, Frenchay, Glenside and St Matthias) during staffed hours, to access higher education resources. They will be able to borrow up to five items and will also have access to specialist print journals and support from university library staff. The project is currently targeting sixth form students who need to access high level learning resources for their studies. In return all UWE Bristol students and staff can use their university ID card to access the resources available from their local public library. For more information visit Filton Library at the Shield Centre.

as I always have and as my track record shows. “The only difference is I will be voting and supporting Labour at the next elections in 2015.” Cllr Teml, alongside Cllr Kieran Hyde, stepped down as Conservative councillors at a council meeting in 2012 to become Independents. At the time they stated: “If we are ever to achieve positive change during the remainder of

our term, we believe that party politics must be put to one side. “It is so important that when representing Filton Town Council that your judgement is not clouded by political agendas.” At last month’s town council meeting, resident Brian Smith said that Cllr Teml and Cllr Hyde should have sought permission from the voters when they became Independent. However Cllr Teml stated that this would involve holding a by-election, costing tax payers at least £4,000, and would therefore “not be a sensible use of funds in a time of national cuts”. Filton has had a recent history of councillors switching political affiliation. Cllr Mel Drewitt went from Labour to Independent Labour and Cllr Bill Moore went from Labour to Independent.

FIT IN FILTON! activities for all at at Filton Leisure Centre, Elm Park Why exercise?

Filton Sports and Leisure Centre manager Scott Fessey explains Well for a start its good for you, it’s fun and it can reduce your risk of major illnesses, such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes and cancer by up to 50%. Exercise is the miracle cure we’ve always had, but for too long we’ve neglected to take our recommended dose. Our health is now suffering as a consequence. Whatever your age, there’s strong scientific evidence that being physically active can help you lead a healthier and even happier life. People who do regular activity have a lower risk of many diseases, such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, stroke and some cancers. Research shows that physical activity can also boost self-esteem, mood, sleep quality and energy, as well as reducing your risk of stress, depression, dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. So, we hear you ask, what counts??? Moderate-intensity aerobic activity means you’re working hard enough to raise your heart rate and break a sweat. One way to tell if you’re working at a moderate intensity is if you can still talk but you can’t sing the words to a song. Examples of moderate-intensity aerobic activities are: • walking fast • water aerobics • riding a bike on level ground or with few hills • playing doubles tennis • pushing a lawn mower Daily chores such as shopping, cooking or housework don’t count towards your 150 minutes (recommended a week, 20 minutes per day). This is because the effort needed to do them isn’t hard enough to get your heart rate up. People are less active nowadays, partly because technology has made our lives easier. We drive cars or take public transport. Machines wash our clothes. We entertain ourselves in front of a TV or computer screen. Fewer people are doing manual work, and most of us have jobs that involve little physical effort. Work, house chores, shopping and other necessary activities are far less demanding than for previous generations. “So don’t delay, it’s never too late to start!!”

Swimming and fitness

We currently have vacancies in some of our swimming classes. We cater for all ages from young to old and all abilities, all our instructors are warm, friendly and highly experienced . If you feel you would like for your little ones to learn, or if you would like some help with your stroke then please do not hesitate to get in touch with one of our swim team or pop down to the centre and speak to one of our swimming coordinators. Dinki Dolphins - Come and join Vicki in the learner pool for some fun with music and some water play, all welcome. These run on Monday 0930-1030, Thursdays and Fridays from 10001100. No booking necessary, first come first served basis. Note: Swimming lessons rebooking started on 10th March. Swimfit - Come along and try our Swimfit classes, if you are seeking to push the pace or train for a race then you need the Get Fit programme from our Motivate collection. Designed by the experts at the ASA for people who like to stick to the programme and bring back gold, Get Fit has 30 progressive sessions for you to work through in sequence. Swimfit runs every Tuesday night from 7pm to 8pm only £4. Aqua Aerobics - classes offer you something different to a traditional gym workout and you’ll really see a difference in your overall health and fitness. Typical Aqua Aerobics classes will involve all the exercises you would expect in a ‘dry’ class but with added bonuses you can only get from exercising in water. Water supports the body, putting less stress on your joints and muscles • This support is great if you’re older, have suffered an injury or are recovering from illness • Water pressure helps the heart move blood around the body, putting less strain on it • The impact of gravity is less in the water allowing a greater range of motion • Working out in water can also prevent overheating, helping you exercise for longer. • And... it’s fun! It is not often you can say that about a workout. Please call if you would like any more information on 01454 866686, or email swimming@ filtontowncouncil.gov.uk

Now that spring has officially sprung, bringing with it bouquets of daffodils and sun-kissed days, it’s time to start getting back into the great outdoors with a look that goes rough-and-tumble: denim. Nothing rivals fashion’s classic, laid-back, suitablefor-all-occasions jean fabric. Although the material may remain a constant, the style and cut is constantly evolving, from bruised and battered boyfriend denim jackets to acid-washed skinnies, to frayed, faded and ripped boyfriend jeans. A particular style that may have been ridiculed over the years is double denim. However, it is now time to forget about its past misfortunes and embrace this rising trend. Contrast the shades of sea blue for a bold statement outfit, while breaking it up by injecting a contrasting coloured piece of clothing. And if you’re really feeling brave, take a stab at triple denim. After all, you can never have too much of a good thing. Here are some of my favourite pieces available at The Mall Cribbs Causeway: 1. Evie Spot Jacket, £95 from French Connection in John Lewis 2. Acid Wash Grey Skirt, £14.99 from H&M

Bin fee to be launched in weeks as residents urged to make a choice Filton residents are being encouraged to consider their options for garden waste disposal ahead of service changes being introduced this spring. From March 31, South Gloucestershire Council’s green bin service moves to a subscription-only basis and residents who wish to continue to receive the service after this date can subscribe now via the council’s website. The optional service costs £36 per year and includes fortnightly collections. Residents who do not wish to subscribe to the service have a number of other options to dispose of their garden waste. These include the free and environmentally-friendly option of composting, which ensures that garden waste and uncooked kitchen waste can be returned to the garden as a free soil improver.

Residents can order home compost bins from the council’s partner www.getcomposting. com and, as part of the drive to increase composting, residents moving into newbuild homes in the district will also be offered a voucher for

a new free home compost bin from April. For residents who require only occasional garden waste collection, ad hoc waste collection sacks will be available from March 14 from council libraries and County Stores, High Street, Marshfield. Sacks cost £2 each and users can book a collection date via the council’s website. Residents can also continue to dispose of garden waste free of charge at their local Sort It!* centre. As part of the changes being introduced from the summer, Sort It!* centres will have new traffic management measures as well as traffic cameras to allow residents to check how busy their local centre is before setting out. The changes form part of the council’s revised waste strategy for 2013-19, which was approved by councillors in 2013 following consultation with residents.

The strategy will also see kerbside recycling extended to include mixed plastics, drinks cartons and small electrical items from March 31. South Gloucestershire already has one of the highest recycling rates of all unitary authorities and the changes aim to build on this success by extending the recycling service to include more types of waste, says the council. The authority also says the moves will help the council to balance its income against the cost of delivering services at a time when all local authorities are receiving less money from government. Further information on garden waste options, including online booking for the green waste service and ad hoc sack collection, are available on the council’s website at www.southglos.gov.uk/ gardenwasteservice.

Knitters raise whopping £40,900 Six friends’ shared passion for knitting has raised a whopping £40,900 after they took their knitted life-size nativity scene on tour and even launched their own Christmas card range. The Knutty Knitters made headlines around the country in December, featuring in The Sun, The Daily Mail, Hello! Magazine and on The One Show. The group, who met at St Teresa’s Catholic Primary School in Monks Park, collected the staggering sum in aid of Bristol’s St Peter’s Hospice, which cared for their friend Christine Walsh before she passed away in 2011. style, the cheque they handed over to the charity was an 86inch knitted cheque, which they presented to St Peter’s Hospice CEO Simon Caraffi. Knutty Knitter Alison Spurrell said: “Last year we raised £7,700 for the hospice and the ‘Knitivity’ was such a success that we decided to do it again this year. The response we received was absolutely unbelievable with national media coverage and a final total beyond our wildest dreams. It’s still not sunk in how much we raised and how positively people responded to it. We put in a lot of hard work and it’s amazing to see it pay off.”

Asda and school team up for healthy eating Asda Filton has teamed up with Orchard School to provide special lessons on healthy eating. The store’s community life champion, Anne Maddox, has been working with pupils and their families at Orchard Schools Bristol to teach them about the importance of a healthy diet and following an active lifestyle. For six weeks, the school has been holding a healthy eating workshop called ‘Cooking with the Kids’, which involved cookery lessons and healthy eating tips on a budget. Anne and fellow Asda colleagues were also on hand to help deliver the project. Anne’s visit formed part of Asda Filton’s ‘Community Life’ initiative, which aims to make the area around the store a

Author Joffre visits school On the last day of term (and the last day of National Storytelling Week!), we were very fortunate to receive a visit from Joffre White, author of the increasingly popular FROG series. Year 7 and 8 students took part in his Reading Motivator Roadshow, in which Joffre talked about stories, the power of reading, what inspires us and how reading can help us achieve our dreams and ambitions. One student commented that the road show had “inspired them to work out what they really wanted to achieve” and the participation, responses and enthusiasm of students was fantastic. Small groups of students who enjoy creative writing then worked with Joffre in workshops throughout the day, learning about the techniques that writers use to help them generate

Sophie Coates in Y8 said, “The assembly was so good and so different everyone was interested.” Neve Shorter agreed, saying that she was really engaged in the story of Joffre’s life story.”

Splendid Production Workshop Last month Kerry Frampton, the artistic director of Splendid Productions, joined us at Abbeywood to run a workshop for the Concorde Partnership Y10 GCSE Drama students. Always entertaining and great value, Kerry, whose company have visited Abbeywood several times in recent years, is a physical theatre expert and she introduced students to a range of different performance and improvisation techniques which they can use in their own physical work in class. We were joined by students and staff from Patchway and Bradley Stoke schools and it was great to see these students work together so co-operatively during the three hour session.

Basketball team aim for play-offs A basketball team who have big ambitions for next season are first turning their attentions to ending this season on a high. The Bristol Academy Flyers, based at SGS College’s WISE Campus, are currently battling for a place in the end-of-season England Basketball National League Division 1 play-offs, facing a busy month in England’s own version of US college basketball’s March Madness. Reaching the final-four play-off on April 26-27 is the goal before the club makes the jump to the top flight of British

Dear Filtonians On Wednesday March 5th the Churches were marking the beginning of Lent with services which involve an act of confession followed by the marking of each worshipper with the sign of the cross in Ashes (made from the previous year’s Palm Crosses) as a sign of contrition and forgiveness, hence the name Ash Wednesday. Ash Wednesday is immediately preceded by Shrove Tuesday, usually referred to nowadays as Pancake Day. The Medieval practice, from which the name Shrove Tuesday is derived, involved both food and confession. One would go to the Priest for confession and absolution and on your return home in the evening the whole family would unite around the domestic hearth to share a meal which was intended to include any excess foodstuffs which were not permitted during Lent. In Medieval times

TH

this would involve red meat, preserved fruits, some dairy produce such as butter and cheese and any other toothsome morsel which you could find - which in the majority of households would be few and far between. The practice grew up of cooking it altogether - as a type of potage - and then adding flour and making it into a cake which could then be baked on the stone hearth and so we have the origins of our modern day pancake. Shrove Tuesday is so named because of the act of ‘shriving’ the individual penitent, that is forgiving absolving - the person who had made their confession. Even in our more secular age

St Peter’s Church, Filton the majority of people observe Shrove Tuesday and even try to give something up for Lent often chocolate or some similar indulgence. Whilst all of this is for the good - unless you have shares in Cadbury’s! - to my mind it doesn’t answer the need. We actually all have so many ‘good things’ that giving up a bar of chocolate doesn’t really ‘cut the mustard’ so to speak. Giving up alcohol or smoking gets closer and for some is truly a real challenge so if that answers your need, go to it I say. For most of us however the act of giving something of our time, talents or money to help someone or some need is, in my opinion, a more positive

Lenten discipline. There are many possibilities for charitable work. For example all our churches support charities for the homeless. At St Peter’s this Lent we will be supporting a charity which will soon be based in Filton at Conygre House which offers counselling and help with mental health problems. Each church will have its own programme and the library will have details of other projects which you might like to support. I was looking forward to my pancake on Shrove Tuesday but I was looking forward to helping change a person’s life even more. God bless you all Fr Brian, Rector of Filton

with Filton Sgt Steve Ives majority of incidents I have attended have been reported by witnesses, neighbours or passers-by – not the victims themselves. Those cases usually involve a violent attack, but there are many other ways someone can be committing domestic abuse. Do you know the signs? If someone is constantly checking up on their partner, putting them down or controlling all the family finances, that could be abuse. If you know someone whose character has changed since

One of our main policing priorities, set by Police and Crime Commissioner Sue Mountstevens, is to tackle domestic and sexual abuse, particularly towards women and children. Every police officer has witnessed first-hand the effects of domestic abuse and all my colleagues would agree that we must do all we can to protect victims and prosecute those responsible. And we know that anyone can be affected – I’ve seen people from many different backgrounds, all sorts of relationships, and any age, both committing and suffering from abuse. We really do need you to help us tackle this issue. Did you know that less than one quarter of victims of domestic abuse will call us to report the incidents? It can be hard for people to accept that what they are experiencing at the hands of a partner or family member is, in fact, abuse. I can tell you that the

they started a new relationship – they seem less outgoing, they aren’t on the phone so often and don’t visit friends and family so much – that could be the result of abuse. If a child’s behaviour changes and they become withdrawn, or start getting into trouble – they could be witnessing or experiencing abuse at home. If you have concerns about a relative or friend, please give them a chance to talk to you as they will often open up to someone close. Don’t tell them what to do

News Marathon man to tackle fourth race

by Rebecca Day A Filton resident is running his fourth marathon this year to raise money for research into prostate cancer – a disease which claimed the life of Richard Ashley’s father six years ago. Mr Ashley said on his JustGiving page: “Anyone who has lost a relative to cancer knows that the memories stay strong and not a day goes by when you don’t wish they were here.” He says that he is not a “natural” runner, but has already completed three London Marathons, which were supported by the community in Patchway, where he used to live. Richard started running in his mid-30s, when he took part in the Bristol Half Marathon. His father, John, passed away in the January before his first marathon in April 2008. He added: “I never thought I was built for running, but

Richard Ashley is running the London Marathon for the Bristol Urological Institute in memory of his father John here I am again running my fourth marathon, hoping dad is watching me as I do whatever it takes to get to the finish line. “My wife and mum are always there supporting me and know exactly where to stand on the 14 and 22-mile mark, just past Tower Bridge.” Richard trains with his

13-year-old grandson, Kieran. Most of his family have also competed in the Run for the Future race, held on the Downs every September. “We will do whatever we can to raise awareness so other families don’t have to lose any family members and suffer the pain we have,” he added.

Richard will be running in the London marathon on April 13 to raise money for the Bristol Urological Institute (BUI) at Southmead Hospital – the unit which treated his father. He has already raised over £10,000 for BUI, and hopes to reach his target of an additional £1,000 through running in this year’s London marathon. “When Dad lost his fight with prostate cancer I wanted to raise money for the unit that treated him. I was able to secure a place running for the BUI for my first London Marathon and have supported them ever since.” The BUI aims to improve the treatment and care of people with urological disorders, to support and develop research, and to provide a high standard of training for staff at the unit. News BT team answer youth club’s plea On February 19, five kindhearted volunteers from BT came out to St Andrew’s Methodist Youth Centre after answering a plea for some help with our old store cupboard. The homemade wooden shelving units were falling apart and were a real health and safety concern for us. The guys and gal from BT came in and took a look, measured up and then did some “begging” around BT to find some suitable racking for the odd-shaped space we have. They came fully-equipped on the day with tools, paint, shelving and work gloves. We supplied the coffee, biscuits, sweets and Danish pastries and they worked hard and got it all done in a day! How to keep your senior pet in tip-top condition At Filton Vets4Pets we like to work with local pet owners to encourage awareness of senior pet-related issues. Like humans, as dogs and cats age they can begin to experience health problems. But unlike us, they often can’t let us know that they’re feeling unwell. Veterinary surgeon and partner Michael Parry said: “As our pets get older, they can develop age-related issues, including mobility problems and stiffness, weight loss or gain, dental problems and lumps and bumps which can be signs of cancer.” If you’re concerned about

your pet’s health as they get older why not pop into the surgery, because until the end of April we are offering a Senior Pet Health Check for just £25. We will give your pet a thorough examination to check everything is as it should be. And if we do recommend further treatment as a result of their health check, we’ll put the £25 you’ve already paid towards the cost of it.

These walks, which are led by experienced volunteer members of the Ramblers’ Association and begin from stations along the wonderfully scenic “Heart of Wessex” railway line between Bristol and Weymouth, are an excellent way of escaping to the countryside, seaside, or visiting market towns such as Frome and Castle Cary, without the need to drive. The line meanders through the deep, green Avon valley, winding between the river and Kennet & Avon Canal and emerging onto the broad Wiltshire plains and on into Somerset. As it enters Dorset, it traverses an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, before sweeping over the South Dorset Downs to the World Heritage Jurassic Coast at Weymouth. Our enthusiastic walk leaders, who enjoy the combination of train travel and walking, are drawn from all four local branches of the Ramblers and despite the fact that we have been leading walks from the 20 stations along the line for almost 20 years, the leaders still find new and interesting routes. (You need not worry – the walks do not follow the railway line!) The walks are free (although transport costs are not included), are open to non-members of the Ramblers and vary in length from five miles to 18 miles but

Filton Abbey Wood Station can be the starting point for those wanting to join Wessex Wanderers walks on average between eight and 11 miles. We do not normally stop at a pub or cafe at lunchtime (so walkers need to bring their own food and drink) but at the end of walks there is often the opportunity to have a drink at a local pub or café with time to continue to socialise with fellow walkers. The 2014 season of walks, commences on Saturday, May 17, and finishes on Saturday, October 11. There are some 31 walks over these months and there is much variety. The first walk of the season, on Saturday, May 17, will be a guided tour of the nearby market town of Frome – the tour will be approximately one and a half hours to two hours long and is

absolutely free, but needs to be booked in advance, so that we can book the appropriate number of guides. The meeting time is also to be confirmed and is based on the train times from both the Bristol Temple Meads and Weymouth directions. The last walk of the season will be a walk in the Dorchester area and with a variety of walks in between. Filton Abbey Wood station is a good starting point to catch the train for these walks, not only is there a good service to Bristol Temple Meads (and many other places), some of the trains that go to and from Weymouth actually pass through without the need to change trains I hope that this will encourage

you to come on one of our Wessex Wanderers Railway walks and if you have any queries about the walks as a whole, rail “deals” etc, please do not hesitate to contact me. The 2014 programme is now available, so if you would like one let the Walks Coordinator know and they will send you a copy. The contact details are 0117 979 8628. Alternatively the programme is now available at www.wessexrailwaywalks.org. uk. The website also gives any updates along with a Frequently Asked Questions section, upto-date timetables and other information. Ann Light On behalf of Wessex Wanderer Walks

March: 3D printing Much has been written in the media about 3D printing but what is it? First of all the “D” stands for dimensions. We all live in 3D space. We have width, height and length. It is what gives us volume rather than just being flat. 2D printing is what you are used to now, such as printing on a piece of paper. The image is flat and therefore just a picture of the actual thing you are printing. However, 3D adds the crucial third dimension of height. This brings the image out of the paper and actually gives you an image with volume. This means when the print is finished you can actually pick up and hold the object. It also means you can actually use it. For example, say you have an old car and they no longer make parts for the car as it would be too expensive. As long as you have the original size and shape of the item, you can recreate it exactly using a printer without all the expensive machinery. You can print in many materials including plastic, metal and even chocolate, but you need the right printer for the right job. You can now buy a machine that produces food in great shapes! Unfortunately it is likely to sell at over £3,000, but one day we all might have one. Of course, if you would like to have a chat about this please contact us on 0117 969 8767 or visit us in our shop on the corner of Filton Avenue and the A4174. Advert, Page 25

Nominate your hero for a community award Filton residents can celebrate their community heroes by nominating them for this year’s Chair’s Community Awards. The annual awards event, run by South Gloucestershire Council, aims to celebrate the hard work of volunteers who display outstanding commitment in giving up their time and effort to help others. The deadline for nominations is Friday, March 21, and chairman of the council Councillor Ian Boulton said: “These awards are designed to celebrate the important contribution local people make

to life in South Gloucestershire. Every year the awards highlight the efforts of these fantastic individuals who dedicate their time to improve the lives of local people and make community life better. “It’s important to pay tribute to these inspirational people, so I urge anyone who knows of an outstanding individual who deserves to receive an award to get in touch and nominate today.” From charity fundraisers to local football club managers, sports coaches and arts festival organisers, suggestions for

nominations include those who have contributed to community development, promoting equality, arts, sports, play, environment, working with older or young people, advice and advocacy or have simply been a good neighbour. You can nominate online at www.southglos.gov.uk/ communityawards, call 01454 863008 or email communityawards@southglos. gov.uk. Winners will be invited to a ceremony at the South Gloucestershire & Stroud College WISE campus in Filton on Sunday, May 18.
